Yagnavalkya
(Editor's Intro Note: I have travelled extensively around the world with knowledge of Vedic astrology and Vastu Shastra, and the benefits it gives to mankind. During my interactions with public, there have been several instances where we discovered how the common man was being exploited by quack astrologers and fake priests. And this is resulting in bad publicity to this great science. We were deeply hurt and were always looking out for many ways to address this issue. With this issue, we are happy to inform you that we will begin a series of articles addressing this. The series aims to demystify vedic knowledge and associated practices. The scribe, one of the world's greatest vedic scholars alive, under his pen name Yagnavalkya, will be writing on a variety of topics and bringing out the true meaning and scientific spirit of our vedic knowledge. He will attempt to correct many misunderstandings that currently prevail, and will explore how we can reap the maximum benefits of vedic sciences. We hope the reader will find this new initiative valuable.)

y whatever name we call and worship the Elephant-Faced God - Ganesha, Ganapathi or Vinayaka, the innate feelings for anyone will always be the same; because HE is the lord of success and wisdom. It is believed that HE can remove all the obstacles that come up in the way of our multifarious efforts and endeavours. The elephant head and the potbelly have become his identity for all the worshippers. He is the son of Lord Shiva and goddess Parvati and one of the most popular and important deities among Hindus. Lord Ganesha represents the high-spirited knowledge. As the one among the five prime deities of Hinduism, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and Durga, he is even believed to be worshipped by the other four.
According to the popular belief, it is held that no work of any importance could be initiated without invoking and worshipping Lord Ganesha. It is believed that ever since a boon was bestowed upon him, by Lord Shiva himself, that before the commencement of any Pooja, by anyone whomsoever, one must invoke and pray to Lord Ganesha and seek his blessings; Lord Ganesha is being worshipped right at the beginning of any endeavour with devotion and dedication. Praying to Him to remove all the obstacles that may throng the path and take one onto the path of prosperity and success; can be always a morale booster. Furthermore, He can also grace the devotees with knowledge, spiritual success and power. Religious experts and historians hold that that Lord Ganesha is worshipped by all from all parts of the country, by devout Hindus, irrespective of caste or creed. The most famous and popular mantras to invoke him are
Om Shri Ganeshaaya Namah| and Om Gam Ganapataye Namah|
Astrologically, Wednesday is held by some, as the best day for worshipping Lord Ganesha. Wednesday is the day ruled by Mercury or Budha. Those having a weak Mercury in their nativity must worship Lord Ganesha, on Wednesdays to gain fruitful results, luck and fortune.

aturn and Mars, the two malefics which are illdisposed to each other are going to stay in the Martian sign of Scorpio for more than 6 months this year. This raises interest about how this combination in transit is going to affect individual horoscopes.
It is here we have to keep in mind that mere conjunction and transit of planets do not cause good or bad. It is a combination of other factors too that determine the nature of things to happen. The running dasa and bhukthi also must support the adversity of these malefics.
For instance the two most important personalities of Tamilnadu politics, namely Ms. Jayalalithaa and Mr. Karunanidhi have this combination transiting crucial houses in their horoscopes at the time of Assembly elections on May 16, 2016. Jayalalithaa is Gemini ascendant and has Moon in Leo joined with Mars. For her, Mars is the 6th lord and Saturn is the 8th lord (and also the 9th lord), now transiting the 6th house from the lagna and 4th house from the Moon sign. By general rules of transit these two malefics in the 4th house must be bad.
Transits in Birth Charts More than the transits, the prospects of kids that are born in the current times with Saturn - Mars conjunction in Scorpio is a matter of research. For instance the death of the Indian techie working for Infosys in Brussels in a terror attack during the period of this conjunction when his child was just a month old is worthy of research. Though the exact date of the birth of his child is not known, news reports said that the child was 41 days old when his body was brought to his house. The terror attack that killed him took place on 22nd March 2016. His body was brought to his home on 29th March. This was reported on 30thMarch in the Times of India which said that his baby was 41 days old. This puts the prospect of the baby being born on 18th February 2016.

Looking at Karunanidhi’s horoscope we will see that this malefic combination occurs in the 7th house from the Moon sign (Taurus) and in the 5th house from his lagna. Both of them have this transit in adverse houses but things stand out such that one of them will win the elections to assume the office of the Chief Minister. So how is this transit going to work?

his is a great astronomical phenomenon which happens once in few years. Milton Keynes of Open University tells us this phenomenon has occurred earlier on th 7 May 2003 and 8th November 2006. The coming ones are on 9th May 2016 and 11th November 2019 and one on 13th November 2032. These will be visible in parts of the world where visibility of the Sun is there during the day – North and South America, Asia, Africa, the Pacific, Atlantic and Indian Oceans, Arctic and Antarctica. According to The Astronomical Society of India this phenomenon will be visible all over India. The transit time will be from 16.30 IST to the next day 00.32 IST. The visibility will not be there when the Sun goes below horizon as it sets. Mercury crossing the Sun’s Disc During this period of the rare transit, the planetary transits show a peculiar transit as the four planets in the zodiac will be retrograde - Mars, Saturn in Scorpio, Jupiter in Leo andMercury in Aries. At least five planets will occupy the fiery signs. Venus, Sun and Mercury will be in Aries while Jupiter (and Rahu) will be in Leo. Interestingly Jupiter will be aspecting both Sagittarius and Aries indicating the prominence of the fiery signs during this celestial phenomenon. Influence of Jupiter and Mars An important point to note during the hours of transit of Mercury over disc is that the whole phenomena will happen during a trine between the point of transit and Jupiter. The Sun will trine Jupiter and the node (Rahu). Mercury crossing the Sun will happen in the constellation of Bharani 4th pada and in the Navamsa of Scorpio. It is interesting to note in the Rasi chart the conjunction happens in the house of Mars, while in Navamsa also Mercury occupies the sign of Mars. Hence this year Mercury crossing the disc will have the impact of both Mars and Jupiter.

hile Saturn has been in Scorpio – his dire enemy Mars’ house - since 2nd November 2014, Mars entered the sign on 20th February 2016.
There is an increase of force of character, strength of will, love of power and authority, ability to control others, and dislike of opposition and restraint. This may result in a very forceful, strong, even turbulent character, unless counteracted by good influence from benefics. Its tendency is rather critical, and unless well aspected or accompanied by prominent benefics, it 'is more likely to be productive of evil than good. It jeopardises honour and reputation, may cause unpopularity or scandal, and threatens to overthrow, reverse-collapse or downfall. If well aspected, or benefics are strong, it produces a character both masterful and subtle, one that will excel through plots and counterplots and influence men through ways they do not understand; or it may give eminence and power in things that are secret hidden, occult, mystical, or that are on the other hand merely unpopular and of low degree or sometimes, in an unfavourable horoscope, notoriety in crime or shame. It is not very favourable for occupation or for any public pursuit, as it tends to break up, disrupt, disintegrate and dissociate. The same applies to the father - he either dies early in the native's life, or there will be disharmony or separation; he may bring trouble to the native or even death in extreme cases. In the absence of bad aspectsit is good for occupations concerned with death and the affairs or goods of the dead, also chemicals, sanitation, etc. Its influence on health is rather perilous in early life, but if that be over it tends to long life if well aspected. Dangers come from diseases of the parts signified by Scorpio from accidents, poisons, or surgical operations; from infectious or“filth" diseases. There is likelihood of death occurring in some public place or in a more or less The astrological emagazine
public manner. It is favourable for joining mystical, occult, or secret societies or associations. Sudden resolutions, violent temper, passionate, self-willed, acquisitive, jealous, independent, resourceful, and cautious; shrewd mind rather than profoundly intellectual are indicated. Sorrow through love affairs, secret alliances, intrigues, or domestic difficulties. Psychic ability and fondness for occult investigations, chemistry, or geology. Success through persistence and cleverness after many difficulties, obstacles, and trials, especially if necessary attention is given to development along the higher lines. Scorpio is the second watery sign. Mars the planet of energy and force is its lord. Though the sign is concerned with emotions it is strange that Moon the planet of emotions and sentiments gets its debility in this sign. It is virtually a sign of crisis and struggle. The motive on the face of it may look wholly material but on deep analysis shall be found emotional and sentimental in essence and origin. The watery signs do deal with emotions but there are three aspects of emotions according to the three stages of evolution. In the first watery sign the emotions appear as the nurturing forces engaged in preparing the person for a struggle. This comes under Cancer. The second sign releases the emotions as a creative and procreative force. The motive of creation and procreation is to find out the channels for suppressed and repressed emotions. A man was considered to be a good for nothing fellow in his childhood. To establish his identity and importance he works very hard and tops in every competitive examination and is selected in his first attempt. Apparently he has done all this to find some job which may grant him security of sustenance. In fact he has done such a hard labour to show the world that he is an important person in his own right. This is the constructive action of Saturn. He could be equally destructive had he gone on the other side. He was made unhappy by his parents because they forced May 2016

Rama had to be sent for, twice. The second time he was called Rama left his room and came towards the court. He saw the presence of sages Vasishtha and Viswamitra. Rama appeared like Sri Subrahmanya Swami. Sage Valmiki had great affection and devotion towards Subrahmanya. Subrahmanya is Jnana Skanda. Rama is also now a seeker of Jnana. Some feel that Sage Valmiki is from South India. Rama appeared gentle and pleasant. His mind appeared at peace. There was no turbulence. The face expressed repose. He has merged his mind in Omkara. It appeared as if Omkara itself was walking towards the court. The physical description of Rama is wonderful. Sita asked Anjaneya Swami if he had seen Rama. When he said yes, she asked him to describe Rama’s form. This occurs in Sundara Kanda. This was a great test for Hanuman. Except for Sita no one else had complete knowledge of Rama’s physique. He deeply meditated and began the description of Rama from head to toe. He is well proportioned and that He is of an auspicious form. We keep pictures of God and Guru in our homes. They radiate good vibrations. Youngsters keep photos of cinema heroes, heroines, athletes and other stars. Their faces do not inspire us with any divine energy, as do the pictures of gods and Guru. But the faces of these other local heroes may inspire the youth to strive towards certain worldly goals. Rama is humble and noble. He is radiant and free from anxiety. His body is fit for receiving the initiation to reach the highest spiritual state of enlightenment. We must all think about this life’s journey, its nature and purpose. Rama explored deeply into the subject. At the beginning of the work, Rama is described in all aspects – mind, body, and emotions. Rama is now entering the stage of youth. It is at the adolescent stage. Generally, youth at this stage people are accused of arrogance and instability. But Rama appears wise as an elder. He is unhurried. He is not appearing troubled. He is not also fully joyous. He has not yet obtained the highest bliss yielded by a complete spiritual awakening. All his internal queries have not been fully answered yet. The stagnant water has flown away. But the fresh water 26 May 2016
has not flown in yet, to fill the space. We become disciples to attain eternal bliss. He appears contented. His thoughts include questions like, why do we embark on this journey of life and what is the purpose of life. He has completely thrashed out the topic in his mind. There is no need for a college education for doing this. A genuine interest and curiosity are required. At a young age these questions arise but later they disappear. One must continually ponder over them. Rama
appears pure and unblemished. All virtues are in him. Has he earned them or have they been attracted to Him? The virtues themselves wished to become purified by being associated with Rama. They wished to gain further power and fame. It was not due to his yearning but theirs. He is generous. He follows the righteous path. In Rama’s eyes and face there is an attraction. But to the discerning eyes of sages it was evident that there is an unfulfilled desire in Rama.
Everyone watched him approaching. Even from afar, Rama offered his prostrations and greetings. Dasaratha was very happy. He had doubted whether he would come. Rama prostrated to the feet of the king after introducing himself. Rama was invited to sit on the king’s lap but Rama preferred to sit on the floor. When one makes a phone call, one must disclose the identity first, before beginning a conversation. That is the reason why Rama introduced himself. Rama sat on the floor comfortably on a carpet placed for him. Along with him, his brothers Lakshmana and Satrughna also took their seats. One should be seated comfortably and without any anxiety and fear when listening to the words of Guru. Dasaratha questioned Rama about his current state. He continued to lament that he is saddened to see him like this. He looked pale and weak. Dasaratha asked Rama what troubled him as he appeared like an unaware person, despite all his knowledge. Dasaratha stressed that Rama was a jnani. Dasaratha is a great king and a scholar. The elders and gurus speak wise words. Those who do not follow the path shown by gurus and elders fall into delusion and become dejected. You must not fall into such a trap. You should listen to the elders and follow their advice. Do not be restless due to troubling doubts. The astrological emagazine
