Festive eating and

PrepZymes By Charlotte Meschede - Nutritionist

The very term of “Festive Eating” conjures up an image of heavily laden tables of food, groaning with glazed hams, stuffed turkey, roast potatoes, Christmas puddings, mince pies, copious quantities of cream, custard and whatever other ‘delights’ you are used to preparing and eating over the Festive Season. It is a time of the year, we look forward to months before. For many, this over-eating and over-indulgence comes at a price (notwithstanding the cost of a small turkey, but moving on…). Several people struggle with symptoms of overconsumption of foods that are not eaten at any other time of the year. These symptoms include weight gain, reflux disease, lethargy and general illhealth. A person’s digestive system comprises of a complex metabolism, starting with chewing in the mouth, swallowing the food so that it enters the stomach. Thereafter the stomach produces acid which helps to activate the protein-digesting enzymes, mixes the food into a liquid, which then it releases slowly into the small intestine and further down, the large intestine. Whilst the human body is an incredibly efficient machine, changing dietary habits, albeit on a temporary basis can wreak havoc with normal digestive processes. Firstly, eating too quickly and not chewing food thoroughly, will prevent that food from exposure to a starchdigesting enzyme that is not present either in the stomach or the small intestine. Many people may chew their food in a domestic situation, but put them at a party or other social function and they eat too quickly. 4

Nov - Dec 2019 / to order call 011-675-0477

Reflux disease is a common complaint and prescribing antacids is a frequent practice in many clinics. Overweight and obesity also aggravate this complaint, so during times of festivity, when food consumption is at an all-time high, this may be a symptom that creates major discomfort. If someone is on an antacid medication, he/she may either increase the dose or take more frequently than during normal periods. Either way, the net result of taking these medications is that they reduce the amount of acid that is formed in the stomach. This does work and does help to alleviate the discomfort created by the reflux, but it can create further indigestion by preventing efficient activation of the protein-digesting enzymes as described above. If food is inadequately broken down, it reaches the small intestine in a less digested state than it should be. The result is that the food will then ferment, resulting in bloating and flatulence, both of which are uncomfortable. A similar effect is seen when large quantities of fluids are imbibed during a meal. This dilutes the acidity of the stomach, so once again, the protein-digesting enzymes are not activated appropriately. In many households, eating “festive” food implies cakes, sweets, puddings, and other refined

CELL FOOD

grains which may result in constipation due to the lack of fibre. Once again this causes bloating and discomfort. Alcohol in large quantities will not only dilute the contents of the stomach, but the alcohol itself may impede the release of several hormones and enzymes involved in the normal digestive process.

So how does AIM PrepZymes prevent all of this? PrepZymes contain a formulation of 9 digestive enzymes which enhance the digestion of protein, starch, fat and fibres.

PrepZymes

No explanation is needed in light of all the previous information, to emphasize how complementary this product could be in times of overeating or simply just changing one’s diet. If anyone has suffered from any of the symptoms mentioned, then adding AIM PrepZymes to their holiday regime could be beneficial. I would suggest taking one capsule for each meal (3 X daily) throughout the festive period. Thereafter, reduce to once a day at the main meal for a couple of weeks to allow your digestion to return to normal.

Eases the Bite!

Enzymes have really interested me for the last few years. I have a thick book that emphasizes their importance: the more enzymes, the more life. They are like workers in our bodies. If we don’t have enzymes, we don’t live. This has interested me so much that I’ve become quite acquainted with AIM PrepZymes. People often call to ask me about pain and inflammation. AIM has a number of products that address these issues. And now, I’ve also come to learn that taking PrepZymes in between meals helps the body to repair and restore. Recently, I put these AIM enzymes to the test for pain and inflammation of my own. I was bitten by a spider on the bottom of my foot, making it swollen and painful. My middle son and I had made plans to go camping for the weekend, and he was going to teach me how to fly fish. But I could hardly walk, so I decided it was time for me to try what I had been telling everyone else about PrepZymes: great for reducing inflammation. Along with all my other AIM products, I started taking PrepZymes daily, emptying the contents of multiple capsules into water and mixing it with my little blender. In other words, I began drinking my enzymes. We headed out on the camping trip, and then it was time for me to go fly fishing for the very first time in my life. I put on the waders and was able to walk without limping or feeling any pain. That was amazing to me. Each day the swelling in my foot went down. PrepZymes helped to reduce the inflammation from the spider bite so that I didn’t have to miss out on this new experience.

CELL FOOD

It’s All About

Nutrition Nutritious, whole food works to maintain good health, and AIM’s high quality, whole-food concentrates and supplements can help to take natural nutrient intake to optimal levels.

The Rise of Digestive Diseases Worldwide On the poor nutritional side, a North American diet that includes too many processed and fast foods has undoubtably been a major factor that contributes to a variety of health problems.

6

A Medical Perspective A steady diet of poor nutrition shows that a lifestyle move away from wholesome food results in poor health. Of course, there are other factors that can trigger digestive and other diseases, but, over time, dietary factors top the list.

A 2008 National Institutes of Health report on the burden of digestive diseases provides some convincing evidence as to what can happen when you regularly put the wrong kind of foods into your mouth: gastroesophageal reflux disease, inflammatory bowel disease, digestive cancers, etc.1 To further illustrate the power of poor nutrition, you only have to look to changes in the Far East.

Numerous enlightened minds in the medical profession, including Dr. Dean Ornish, founder and president the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, and Dr. Alona Pulde, co-author of The Whole Foods Diet, emphasize that lifestyle changes, with good nutrition leading the way, can make an incredibly positive difference in your well-being.

Several Asian countries whose populations had seemed to be immune are now experiencing the onset and rise of many of these North American diseases, primarily due to the adoption of poor nutrition over the past forty years or so. Before the transition toward industrialized societies, most people’s eating habits were healthier until modernization introduced the convenience of processed and fast foods.

The AIM Healthy Cell Concept™ focuses on five factors that promote healthy body cells, a key element in your overall state of health. Nutrition is the first factor, and the AIM intention of providing natural sources of supplemental nutrition is not only to get people’s health back on track but to keep it there.

The AIM Perspective

Nurturing cells with easily absorbed, natural nutrients from AIM supplements can help to optimize healthy food intake, making a huge nutritional difference at the cellular level and supporting body health from the inside out. Let’s take a look at the Garden Trio: three examples of AIM “Nutrition that works” to make cells healthy.

The Garden Trio BarleyLife, Just Carrots and RediBeets comprise a nourishing trio of whole-food concentrates that provide an unparalleled combination of plant-based nutrients.

BarleyLife Barley grass grows with a fibrous root system that acts as a nutritional sponge, absorbing nutrients from the soil and sending them up into sprouting green shoots. Young barley grass is believed to be the most nutritious plant on the planet, but because of its high concentration of fiber, the human digestive system is not “grassenabled” and is unable to absorb all of the nutrients due to this fiber content.. AIM delivers barley’s potent greens as an edible leaf juice powder to give people easy access to its abundance of natural vitamins, minerals, enzymes, antioxidants, chlorophyll and unique plant nutrients. Nutritious, cleansing, detoxifying, alkalizing and inflammation-reducing . . . that’s BarleyLife.

Just Carrots and RediBeets Carrots and beets are taproot vegetables that you can think of as units of underground food storage. Their fleshy roots absorb nutrients from the earth and keep them in what are literally protective, fibrous containers. Like barley grass, AIM taps into the treasure of nutrients in carrots and red beets to create easily assimilated juice powders with minimal fiber. Carrots are a very good source of beta carotene, potassium, and a variety of antioxidants and plant nutrients that support whole-body health, particularly in regard to the eyes and skin. Just Carrots delivers all the benefits of this orange taproot filled with nutrition. Red beets store a rich source of polyphenols, betalains, enzymes, vitamins, minerals and vegetable nitrate, providing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, circulatory and detoxification support that promotes good health and improved liver function. Each canister of RediBeets stores these nutrients and benefits, so tap into them to improve and maintain well-being. The concentration of nutrients in the Garden Trio will provide a daily awareness of nutrition . . . that works!

PERSONAL PRODUCTIVITY

Ulcer story with a

Happy Ending

By Rashid Abass – AIM Star Sapphire Director

Many people will have a peptic ulcer at some point in their lifetime. Apart from dietary non-compliance, causes of ulcers are stress, too much coffee consumption, wheat cereals and bread. Bacterial infection Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) was established as the leading cause of peptic ulcers which also causes gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining leading to diverticulosis), and in Asian populations, cancer of the stomach. Incidentally, AIM Herbal Fiberblend provided immediate relief to a client of mine who for several years spent thousands of rand on medically recommended antibiotics and painkillers for his diverticulosis. People happily agree to the use of antibiotics when they are told that a bacteria is the cause of ulcers. I choose to simply alkalise my diet and support immunity if necessary with the AIM products, which work to eliminate H. pylori bacteria, the said cause of ulcers. I believe that a bad diet which includes things such as milk, sugar, and fizzy drinks are a major cause of ulcers. Colas contain tasteless phosphoric acid. The phosphoric acid can cause damage to the stomach lining and indeed to all cellular tissue and membranes, which can lead to pain and inflammation in the body. Recent media reports mention the risk of using heartburn medications that could potentially be carcinogenic as stated by the FDA. I heard that a man’s wife was due to have an ulcer operation. I recommended that they improve their diet and also try AIM products. They decided to follow my advice. A

few weeks later, the couple came to my door with two bunches of flowers. One for my wife and one for myself. I quietly mused that they should have brought me chocolates instead. Of course I greatly appreciated their sincere gesture. The wife looked very radiant compared to when I first saw her; she happily expressed that she no longer suffered from any pain. I recommended that she continue with her regimen so as to maximise her potential for maintaining good health.

PERSONAL PRODUCTIVITY

Some months later, I overheard him telling a friend about the good experience they had using AIM products. He said his wife had not had to have her ulcer operation. Good diet is important in avoiding any illness or disease, even depression, diabetes and more. AIM products can supplement and aid in maintaining good health. Causes of ulcers: Aspirin; arthritis medication and especially all fizzy drinks. Research at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has confirmed exactly how a once-popular class of antiinflammatory drugs leads to cardiovascular risk for people taking it. Aspirin could potentially cause brain haemorrhage. My preferred 5 AIM product mix comprises of BarleyLife Xtra, CalciAIM, Just Carrots, RediBeets and Peak Endurance. This is

highly alkalising and on rare occasions when I suffered severe gastric discomfort, I consumed a teaspoon of these 5 products mixed and the discomfort vanished immediately! For ulcers, I strongly recommend AIM Herbal Fibreblend; for depression: AIM Composure, AIM Renewed Balance Cream, and AIMega. For good teeth and bone health I use CalciAIM. Now aged 74...I have been free from illhealth for 41 years. At times when I misbehave with my diet, Herbal Fibreblend comes to my rescue. They say you only live once, so take responsibility for your health and we will really live comfortably till our Divinely Appointed time of death.

No more antibiotics I am a 47 year old practicing attorney, husband and father of 4. I am physically active and healthy and I generally have a healthy diet. I am very healthy and do not take any medication apart from painkillers for the odd headache. I didn’t use supplements at all. However, I did not make it through a winter without at least one course of antibiotics for bronchitis and/or similar diseases. Approximately 4 years ago, Yolanda de Villiers, who is a friend of my wife suggested that we use AIM BarleyLife. I am not a fan of supplements but I was tired of using antibiotics every winter. The adverse effects of antibiotics are now well-known. So, our whole family started using BarleyLife Xtra. For the first time in my life I went through winters without antibiotics since using BarleyLife Xtra. Our children, ages 11, 8, 6 and 5 are also very healthy and rarely get ill! I recommend BarleyLife to everybody!

Healthy Aging‌

for the YOUNG

Most young people rarely spend time thinking about growing old. Or do they? One look in the mirror confirms their youthfulness day after day. But the truth that everyone comes to realize is that the mirror can become less friendly with passing time. Aging is inevitable. Aging Factors Genetics play a role, but studies of twins, who begin life with identical genes, reveal that environment and lifestyle changes can have a great effect on how they age. For example, alcohol consumption, medication, smoking and stress were factors in the aging differences between twins. Those who avoided these negatives looked more youthful than their twin siblings.1 Such results support a healthy aging focus.

Talkin’ Bout My Generation Generation after generation eventually must face the aging process. Generational names and timeframes are not an exact science but here’s a guideline: The Silent Generation, born between 1925 and 1945; Baby Boomers, 1946 to 1964; Generation X, 1965 to 1976; Millennials, 1977 to 1995; and the presently overlapping iGen and Alpha generations. Those in the younger generations who are fascinated with celebrities, their fashion style and use of make-up and cosmetic surgery, are encouraged to cover up or remove any signs of aging. At the same time, many are keen to maintain their physiques and

16

physical health with exercise and nutrition. Such a focus requires determination, openmindedness and curiosity. The trick for AIM distributors is to make a convincing argument to younger generations that the longterm, healthy aging benefits of AIM nutrition at the cellular level will serve them well for a long lifetime.

Healthy Aging Factors from AIM Over the years, Members who have personally experienced or witnessed health improvements through the use of AIM products can attest to their long-term benefits. AIM parents have been able to raise healthier children, giving them a consistent concentration of nutrients that arms them with a healthy aging advantage. The idea is that the younger you start taking products such as the Garden Trio, the earlier you introduce healthy aging factors at the cellular level. And all generations can benefit from healthy aging factors from AIM. References: 1 https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih. gov/pubmed/10597816

CoCoa LeafGreens

for Allergies

Shared by Rose Stoltzfus, AIM Director in Gap, Pennsylvania

In January 2015, our 11-year-old daughter, Laura, became really sick. We took her to the doctor, who said she had bronchitis. A prescription antibiotic was prescribed, and she got better. But a couple weeks later Laura was sick again, so the doctor gave her a stronger prescription. Before she finished taking that antibiotic, she became ill again. Once more, we took her to the doctor. That time, they said Laura had allergies and gave her an allergy medication. Near the end of February, Laura had a lot of earaches, sore throat and a cough, and she battled with being sick off and on for the rest of the school term. Laura missed 20 days of school that year. In the summer, Laura quit taking the allergy medication. The end of August came and along with it came swollen glands. We started connecting Laura’s swollen glands in the summers of 2015 and 2016 to allergies, so she started taking the allergy medication again daily right through June 2017. The winter and spring had gone better, but Laura still missed 13 days of school all due to allergies. We also tried some natural products, but nothing helped. Then I learned that CoCoa LeafGreens helped people with allergies. I was still

looking for something natural to help Laura, so we decided to give AIM products a try in June of 2017, even though I didn’t know much about them. The results for Laura were amazing after she started taking CoCoa LeafGreens, Herbal Fiberblend and BarleyLife Xtra. She did not get swollen glands that summer. In December 2017, Laura still coughed off and on due to allergies, so we started giving her Herbal Release. After taking that for two weeks, her cough stopped. As of April 2018, Laura missed only one day of the school term due to allergies. Laura now takes CoCoa LeafGreens, Herbal Fiberblend, Herbal Release, BarleyLife Xtra, AIMega, FloraFood and Composure. She has not had one single allergic reaction yet this winter and spring. We have been so grateful for AIM products and to Chairman’s Club Director Emma Miller for all the time she took in helping us to improve Laura’s health. Also God Almighty for giving someone the wisdom to make these products. Obesity Quality

The toll of your

of life

By Charlotte Meschede - Nutritionist

No one needs to have the definition of obesity spelled out! We are all sadly too aware of what it is and how difficult it is to manage. As I have mentioned several times, I first started my consulting career over 42 years ago. In that period, I have witnessed how the incidence of extreme overweight and obesity has catapulted to epidemic proportions. As a young dietician, I perhaps saw an obese patient once or twice a month. Now, I see at least 2-3 NEW patients every day. Not only have the numbers of people suffering from obesity increased, but so have the accompanying diseases and conditions that are aggravated and caused by obesity itself. Suffice to say, that very few people CHOOSE to be obese and that for most patients, there are solutions. However, before we get to those, let us look at the impact of obesity on the body and how it can affect your quality of life. Overweight and obesity is an inflammatory condition and automatically raises all your inflammation markers. What this means is that every disease condition is not only aggravated by the existence of diabetes, but obesity may be a disease in itself. The diseases that are likely to be caused by obesity are: • Type 2 diabetes • High blood pressure • Heart disease • Stroke • Respiratory disorders • Cancer • Sleep apnoea • Bone and joint damage and consequent fractures • Reflux disease, more commonly known as GORD (gastrointestinal reflux disease) 18

Other conditions that may be aggravated by obesity include:

• Complications of Type 2 diabetes

include kidney failure, heart disease, heart attack and stroke. If a person is obese in addition to having type 2 diabetes, then his/her risk for developing these complications is greatly increased. Depression. Clinical trials and research have shown a direct link between obesity and major depressive disorder. Physical and social discrimination may contribute to depression as many individuals fail to find employment and keep personal relationships due to their obese state. Septicaemia, especially in the incidence of surgery is a huge risk. Most surgeons will refuse elective surgeries unless a patient has reduced total body fat percentage. This situation becomes especially dangerous if emergency surgery is necessary, such as in the case of a car accident or heart attack.

• Liver disease – obesity is a major

cause of a fatty liver, which causes scarring of the liver and a dysfunction, leading to possible cirrhosis and liver failure. Liver disease can of course, be caused by alcohol. Gestational diabetes, which is a form of diabetes that only occurs in pregnancy, is more common in obese women and if the obesity is not corrected, will more likely lead to a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes thereafter. Obese women are much more likely to suffer from infertility and if they do fall pregnant, have a higher risk of miscarriage.

As you can see, obesity can have a dramatically negative effect on the body and quality of life. However, despite significant attention to the medical impacts of obesity, often ignored are the negative outcomes that obese children and adults experience as a result of stigma, bias, and discrimination. Obese individuals are frequently stigmatized because of their weight in many domains of daily life. Research spanning several decades has documented consistent weight bias and stigmatization in employment, health care, schools, the media, and interpersonal relationships. For overweight and obese youth, weight stigmatization translates into pervasive victimization, teasing, and bullying. Multiple adverse outcomes are associated with exposure to weight stigmatization, including depression, anxiety, low self-esteem, body dissatisfaction, suicidal tendencies, poor academic performance, lower physical activity, disordered and dysfunctional eating behaviours and avoidance of health care.

Now let us look at what we CAN do to treat this debilitating condition. There isn’t any one of my weight loss patients that hasn’t done all of the latest dietary trends. Suffice to say, restricting calories is difficult and confusing at best. Most importantly look after your health and nutrition and the rest will follow. Lowering your energy intake is important, but compromising nutrition as a result is all too common. I remember reading a book called Overfed but Undernourished (author unknown), many years ago, which focused primarily on this situation. Many obese people are in fact, undernourished. This only exacerbates the problem as normalising a hormonal response to food, digestion, energy expenditure and fat deposition can ONLY occur when all nutrients are eaten in sufficient quantities. If you are trying to lose weight and have failed time and time again, then take a step back and make sure that all your essential nutrients are being met. Fortunately, AIM has some incredible whole food supplements, which facilitate this even if you do not have access to a kitchen, or do not cook or live in a place where fresh food is not readily available. The following AIM products are a MUST for anyone who feels that their overall nutrition needs a boost:

• AIM BarleyLife or LeafGreens: 1

rounded teaspoon per day will supply essential trace elements, active enzymes, folic acid and all the goodness that you find in eating copious quantities of green leafy vegetables every day. Bear in mind that these are organic products so all the nutrients have not been destroyed or compromised by heating or dilution. AIM ProPeas is an organic ‘clean’ protein made from entirely vegetable sources. It provides valuable protein

which is essential for building up of muscle tissue, formation of enzymes, hormones and many other essential components necessary in the biochemistry and physiology of energy production and digestion AIM GlucoChrom: the over-refinement of many grains and starches has created a hormonal imbalance which results in individuals not only being unable to process sugars and maintain normal blood sugar levels, but also in creating a craving for sweet foods, which aggravate the problem. Chromium has been shown in several research trials and clinical studies to help alleviate sugar cravings and allow the body to use its own insulin appropriately. AIM Fit ‘n Fiber: fibre is commonly deficient in a westernized diet and even more so in lower economic communities due to the reliance on refined staple foods such as white maize and rice. Fibre is essential in the diet to provide the gut with adequate ‘food’ for the good bacteria, to provide a feeling a satiety and to help reduce blood sugar levels by increasing the time it takes carbohydrates to break down into sugar There is an enormous trend in the medical fraternity to look into gut bacteria and the effect it has on the development of overweight, obesity and ultimately Type 2 diabetes. Clinical trials have shown that thin/normal weight people have a completely different bacterial colonization in the gut than obese individuals. Ensure that your diet supports healthy gut bacteria. Research has shown that eating adequate fibre, not only in our food but also as supplements can be effective in helping to rehabilitate gut bacteria. I recommend a fibre supplement for all my type 2 diabetics for this reason alone.

With all this research at our fingertips, it is prudent to recommend AIM FloraFood for all these reasons. Once you have sorted out your diet, then it is time to pay attention to exercise. Eating the correct amount of carbohydrates, fats and proteins will enable you to exercise to your maximum benefit. However, this article would not be complete if I failed to mention AIM Peak Endurance, which will facilitate exactly that... your ability to exercise as well as you can. It is not a stimulant nor a performance enhancer, so safe to take even at Olympic levels, but it does permit you to provide the muscles with enough ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which is the energy that allows the muscles to function. In doing so you will maximise the benefit you get from exercising and even in the event that you do not exercise, it will help to raise extracellular ATP levels, which is how the muscles function. More can be read on this fantastic product as we have published many articles over the years that elaborate on the benefits of AIM Peak Endurance.

Conclusion Whilst the causes of obesity are complex and relate to lifestyle, diet, genetics and the environment, there is much we can do to correct our metabolism and ensure the body is functioning optimally. The psychological effects alone are devastating enough, without the huge metabolic, inflammatory and morbid consequences to being obese. It is a simple process, but not an easy one. However, start at the beginning and address the nutritional requirements and much will be achieved in the journey to wellness.
