Looking Back …

Moving Forward

t’s the eleventh month of 2020, a year like no other in recent history. To find a close comparison, you would have to look back to over one hundred years ago.

In 1918, an influenza pandemic triggered by an H1N1 virus spread worldwide, infecting around 500 million people and resulting in an estimated 50 million deaths.

Much of what the world’s population experienced a century ago, we are living through in the present.

That’s the profoundly disturbing nature of a pandemic. Still, it’s important to keep in mind that a century ago, people made it through those horrific times. So will we. Given the necessary restrictions on movement and social interaction this year, each of us was handed a heavy block of time to contend with our thoughts and emotions, whether in the company of others or on our own.

I’m certain that during this extended downtime, most of us asked ourselves the age-old question: What is truly important in life? At different periods in our lives, we’ve all had to come up with individual answers to this question, but perhaps no more intensely than this year. I’m also certain most of us answered that health is among the most important things in life.

Being part of a company that aims to help people improve and maintain their health is a very good place to be these days. And Members who have made sharing AIM nutrition with others a part of their lives are doing good in a world that can use a lot more good news.

The effect of Nutrition on

Mental Alertness

Most of us are aware of the effects of lack of sleep, too much alcohol or simply stress, on mental alertness but not many doctors pay much attention to the impact that diet has on how ‘switched on’ your brain is at any one time.

If you think about it, your brain is always ‘on’ even when you are asleep.

It controls everything your body does 24/7. This means that your brain needs a constant supply of fuel, which we assume is provided by food. It is what is in the fuel that can make all the difference. In simple terms, what you eat, directly affects the functioning of the brain. Like a car that will respond better to premium fuel rather than a sub-standard one, your brain can be up-regulated or down-regulated to perform better or worse, depending on what nutrients your diet does or does not provide. Eating a diet that is rich in micronutrients such as vitamins, minerals and trace elements as well as adequate amounts of good quality proteins, fats and carbohydrates will protect the brain tissue from oxidative stress which then damages cells and consequently, cellular functioning.

Diets that are high in refined sugars will be harmful to the brain because sugar will aggravate any inflammation, cause a spike in insulin levels and ultimately damage cognitive function.

mental illness such as depression, anxiety, attention deficit disorder and bi-polar disorder.

The impact of nutrition on mental acuity is well documented. Even so, few psychiatrists actually exploit this adjunctive therapy and the patient loses out on what could make a huge difference in the quality of his/her life.

In addition to the micronutrients that can be provided by eating good quality whole and unprocessed foods and supplements, there are some herbal compounds that have been used for centuries to improve mental acuity and cognitive function.

Ginkgo Biloba, commonly known as maidenhair, a tree native to China is well known as a medicinal herb, particularly for its beneficial effects on circulation and cognitive (brain) function. Ginkgo biloba herbal extracts are made from the leaves. My entire life changed thanks to

When I first joined AIM, I was having a lot of problems with my digestive system. I used a lot of laxatives trying to resolve the issue, but had no luck. I would use 10 to 12 tablets for constipation per day and even tried using suppositories, but nothing worked. I ended up being diagnosed with colon cancer in 2006.

I was so scared! I cried for an entire week. I was sent for an operation after the doctor did a colonoscopy. At this time, I had been struggling with constipation and a bloated stomach for about 14 years and with the Cancer diagnosis I could just see death looming.

After the operation I had a lot of complications and that was followed by another 17 operations.

Thanks to my doctor who referred me to the person who would eventually become my Sponsor I learned something new: I always thought that the word “diet� only referred to people wanting to lose weight, I never thought about diet as a way of life and watching what you put in your body. She introduced me to the AIM Products and I realised that they are food supplements. I also realised that I can use food to make my body healthier.

Through diet, supplements and the advice and help from my sponsor I learned that I do not have feel bad.

The AIM Products played such a big role in becoming a healthier person.

The Effects of

Dehydration

on the body

Water is essential for human life and accounts for 50-70% of our total body weight. It is crucial for most bodily functions. Any deficit in water through dehydration, sickness, exercise or heat stress will make us feel unwell. Initially the symptoms of dehydration are headaches and fatigue.

This will lead to irritability and mental and physical decline.

We continually lose water through breathing, urination and defecation.

Healthy individuals will regulate water intake through drinking and eating foods that have a high water content like fresh fruit and vegetables. However, in vulnerable age groups such as infants and the elderly, this intake is dependent on the caregiver or parent and when these individuals are exposed to excessive heat or activity, dehydration may result.

What happens dehydrate?

By the time you feel thirsty, your body is already dehydrated as our thirst mechanism lags behind our actual level of hydration.

Research has shown that being dehydrated by as little as 1% can affect your mood, your ability to concentrate, memory and motor coordination. It appears that brain tissue fluid decreases with dehydration therefore reducing brain volume and temperately interfering with brain function. As you lose water without replacing it, the blood

becomes more concentrated and at this stage, the kidneys are triggered to retain water. The result is that you urinate less.

The thicker and more concentrated the blood becomes, the harder it is for the cardiovascular system to compensate by increasing the heart rate to maintain blood pressure. When the dehydrated body is faced with adverse circumstances such as exercising or heat, the risk of exhaustion will elevate. This is often the cause of fainting or when you feel dizzy if you stand up too quickly.

A dehydrated body will also be less able to regulate body temperature so either hyperthermia (high body temperature) due to fever or hypothermia due to exposure to freezing conditions (low body temperature) will result.

How much do you need to drink?

There is no absolute amount of water that needs to be consumed on a daily basis as it depends on outside temperature,

activity, food eaten and amount and type of exercise that is taken. Most people do not realise that some medications and supplements require water in which to be effective, so if you are taking any fibre supplements, then you need to increase your water intake to accommodate the amount that will enable or activate the supplement as well as the body’s own requirements. Sometimes relying on thirst to guide whether or not you drink water will lead to dehydration. Many people are not as sensitive to the thirst stimulus as they should be. If a fibre supplement does not have access to sufficient liquid, it will not swell in the gut and cause the peristaltic action it is designed to facilitate. As a result, the fibre will form a hard immovable mass in the intestine and will end up causing more damage than it does benefit. I suggest a minimum of 2 litres a day. The balance of your water requirement should be made up with high-water containing foods like fresh vegetables and fruit. Tea and coffee do add to the water intake, but they also take away from it as both of these have a diuretic (increasing urination) effect. Fortunately you do not urinate out the total amount of tea and coffee in volume, but you cannot rely on tea and coffee as liquids which satisfy thirst and prevent dehydration.

The following is a guide to measure your hydration status: 1. Keep a track of your body weight – if you suddenly lose or gain more than 1- 2 kgs within a 48 hour period, the chances are you are either losing water or retaining it.

2. Another method of checking hydration is to check the colour of your urine – the darker it is, the more dehydrated you are.

3. You should also be urinating at least 3-4 times a day. Any less and it implies dehydration.

4. Headaches and dizziness are a symptom of dehydration so if you do have a

headache make sure you are drinking enough water before you take medication to resolve it.

Low blood volume – less blood produces a drop in blood pressure and consequently the amount of oxygen reaching the tissues is diminished. This is called tissue hypoxia and can be life-threatening.

Prevention as always is better than cure. If you make sure you take your 2 – 3 litres of water per day there will be no danger of dehydration.

My AIM Journey. Where do I begin? Not in a million years could I have imagined it would turn out to be such a blessing.

I was introduced to AIM by chance when my husband and I went shopping one afternoon. There was a gentleman selling some products outside a shopping centre. I was not really interested because I had already bought many supplements to assist with my husband’s autoimmune condition. However, it turned out that my husband knew him from way back and they started chatting while I went into the centre to do my shopping.

When my shopping was done he starting discussing the products. I was still not interested but he gave me an AIM magazine which till today excites me because of the amazing info and testimonials. I went home and read it and got really excited. I used to juice for my husband but on the days I was busy and would not have time he would just not have it. CELEBRATION CANCELLATION Greetings to our AIM Family: In spite of our best hopes that the world would be free of the pandemic by autumn, most experts agree that this likely will not happen until later next year. With that in mind, AIM has made the difficult decision to cancel the on-site GROW 2021 AIM Celebration, which was scheduled for June 3 – 6, 2021, at the Chateau on the Lake Resort in Branson, Missouri.

We know many of you will be disappointed by this news. However, our top priority is your health and safety and that of our AIM staff who work at Celebrations.
