Museum Special Exhibits From State House to Statehood Opens September 16, 2014

A History of Fayetteville’s Jewish Community

Explore the people and places that surround the General Assembly’s ratification of the U.S. Constitution – a pivotal event in our city, state and national history. Visitors can also learn how the city has celebrated the ratification in previous milestone years. A number of activities and tours will take place this fall to commemorate the event, which happened in Fayetteville in 1789.

Images, information, and artifacts show how Fayetteville’s economic, social, and cultural welfare has been positively impacted by local Jewish contributions. This ongoing exhibit, told in two parts, brings to life Jewish values of family, faith, work, and community.

Lafayette in Fayetteville Now through Summer 2015

City Market

Who was the Marquis de Lafayette? Fayetteville is the first city named for him and is the only city named for him that he visited. See the bed Lafayette slept in, a rosette worn at the ball held for him and other unique artifacts associated with Lafayette and his visit to Fayetteville in 1825. The museum is thankful to those who helped present the most comprehensive collection of Lafayette-related artifacts and information ever displayed in Fayetteville under one roof.

Cumberland County Goes to War Now through 2015 Visit our exhibit commemorating the sesquicentennial anniversary of the American Civil War. Artifacts, pictures, documents, and educational panels explore Cumberland County’s war experience both on the battlefield as well as the sacrifices made on the home front. Special tours for the 150th anniversary of Sherman’s march through the Carolinas will be offered in March 2015.

A market of local crafters and farmers offer fresh, locally grown vegetables, fruits, eggs, honey, and other farm products. These seasonal offerings along with plants, flowers, pottery, tea, soap, candles, jewelry, and more can be purchased. The market season kicks off in April and runs into December, but a number of vendors appear year-round.

Veterans Day Car Show November 8, 2014 from Noon to 3 p.m. Stroll the museum grounds filled with dozens of vintage and classic cars. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. and judging begins at noon. Admission is free.

Fayetteville, NC was chosen as a site for one of these arsenals. With the beginning of the Civil War, the Fayetteville arsenal became the property of the new Confederate States of America. The Confederacy used the arsenal to produce rifles, ammunition and gun carriages. It was destroyed in 1865 by Union troops under the command of General William T. Sherman. Today, visitors can explore the site, which contains extant ruins with historic markers and signs.

JFK Special Warfare Museum supports the educational mission of the US Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School and is the regimental museum for the US Army Special Forces, US Army Psychological Operations and US Army Civil Affairs branches. Exhibits begin with World War I and proceed through World War II, Korea, Vietnam, actions in Latin America as well as Desert Storm before recounting the more recent wartime activities of Operations Enduring and Iraqi Freedom. Items of interest include a beam from the World Trade Center, displays on Nick Rowe and the POW experience in Vietnam and the gold plated weapons belonging to Saddam Hussein. The Museum and gift shop are open for free Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also open Memorial Day, Labor Day, Veteran’s Day and 4th of July.

Walk through the streets of a war torn a Normandy village, see troopers exiting a helicopter in Vietnam and witness troops defending freedom in Afghanistan and Iraq.

The 82nd Airborne Division War Memorial Museum on Fort Bragg is the only museum in the nation that presents the 82nd Division history from World War I to the present. Artifacts and factural descriptions are on display. Of particular note is the multitude of military aircraft exhibited on the museum’s park like grounds. During All-American Week (May 18-23, 2015), see the 82nd Airborne Division and all its glory at numerous events during a week that is a combined Homecoming, Parade and Memorial. The 82nd Museum will be open all week from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with special events all week. Normal hours: Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
