八隊北歐勁旅 x 五個香港獨立音樂組合 由女聲作主導 以音樂衝擊思維

由康文署藝術節辦事處主辦的「世界文化藝術節─北歐五 國」，將會為香港觀眾帶來一連串精彩的北歐演出作品。其 中，Nordic & Hong Kong Band Sound Gala 將會是今年 藝術節的閉幕節目，於伊利沙伯體育館表演場，上演兩場能 量爆燈的音樂會。作為今次音樂會的策劃人，香港著名音樂 人兼音樂文化推手龔志成（阿龔），及其中一隊有份演出的 香港組合─雞蛋蒸肉餅（GDJYB），就接受了表演場的訪 問，分享對今次音樂會及香港獨立音樂發展的想法。

Eight Nordic indie groups meet five Hong Kong bands A dialogue of sensational sounds led by women voices Nordic & Hong Kong Band Sound Gala is one of the highlight programmes of this year’s World Cultures Festival: The Nordics, organised by the Festivals Office of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.

Bringing eight Nordic indie groups and five Hong Kong bands together, the gala will present two exceptional evenings to the Hong Kong audience.

The Art Venue interviewed the curator of the gala, Kung Chi Shing, a renowned musician and advocate for indie music in Hong Kong.

We asked Kung about his initial idea for the gala, and he said: “When I met with the Festivals Office to design the music programmes, we noticed that the Festival’s other programmes this year are more serious and lean more towards fine arts. So, we decided to organise this Band Sound Gala to be energetic and chill.” He continued: “I have visited Iceland twice. The country is an important city for music and I am always amazed by their music. The eight indie groups from the Nordic countries have been selected from a list of 100 indie groups and, coincidentally, most of the vocalists are women.”

“Nordic music is unique, with extremely high artistic value because of their music structure, composition, and use of a wide range of musical instruments. I hope to broaden the taste of the Hong Kong audience and to encourage Hong Kong musicians to think out of the box.”

GDJYB is one of the Hong Kong bands joining the Band Sound Gala that performed at the Iceland Airways Festival in 2017.

GDJYB told us that the opportunity to perform overseas is important to them, for it helps them to meet new audiences. GDJYB said: “A fourth of the customers who bought our records are from the US. The first time that we performed overseas was in Chiayin, Taiwan, at our own expense. Since then, we have been invited to perform in many countries and no longer need to finance the trips ourselves.”

Established in 2012, GDJYB is still facing challenges after all these years. “It is not easy to be an indie group in Hong Kong. We all have other freelance jobs to make a living and to keep GDJYB alive. But that is just the norm everywhere.” GDJYB added: “In Hong Kong, we don’t have any funding or policy to support the development of indie music.”

There are still many goals that GDJYB wants to achieve and they are hoping for a breakthrough. “We look forward so much to the Band Sound Gala and the workshop as Nordic countries have a very important position in the world of music. We want to learn more about their music creation process.”

Education in Denmark is unique – Yi Kwan Chan Yi Kwan Chan is an Archive Assistant at the Asia Art Archive. A double-major in Fine Arts and Comparative Literature at HKU, Yi Kwan was the Asia Regional Winner in the Art History and Theory category of The Undergraduate Awards in 2017, a global academic awards programme for undergraduate students. She joined the AAA after graduation to work on the Ha Bik Chuen Archive Project, in which she focuses on the research, categorisation, and digitisation of archival materials on art in Hong Kong.

TAV: Why did you choose to go to Denmark for the exchange

programme? What did you study?

Chan: I remember it was very late at night when I was making my application for the exchange programme. Flipping through the programme booklet provided by HKU, I couldn’t make up my mind on which country to choose. Somehow my eyes became fixed on Denmark⁠—a country known for its highest tax rates and happiest people in the world, which are two elements completely different from Hong Kong. Denmark is also particularly famous in Hong Kong for the butter cookies in blue tins (later I found that no Danes could care less about those cookies). With my curiosity piqued, I set out on an exchange journey in Copenhagen in 2016, and it turned out to be the most enriching semester I ever had. To

broaden my understanding of Denmark, I took courses in Danish cinema and Danish architecture and urban design. I also learnt Danish, which is a beautiful language but one that is incredibly difficult to master.

TAV: Many countries would like to replicate the Nordic tertiary education, why?

Chan: The first thing that popped into my head is the free tuition for tertiary education. The public support to students reflects the government’s willingness to invest in future generations. It is also part of the Danish welfare system that leads Denmark to be an egalitarian society.

Yet this may not be easily replicable in other countries. Another interesting aspect of the Danish education system is gap years. I had the pleasure of getting to know a 17-year-old Danish
