South Asian student selected for Arctic expedition A 14-year-old South Asian Sikh student has been selected to take part in the prestigious ‘Students on Ice Arctic Expedition’, according to media reports. Beginning July 21, Abhayjeet Singh Sachal will travel along with a team of over a 100 highschool and university students from around the world. The expedition, which will take them to the eastern Canadian Arctic and western Greenland, will continue up to August 5. Sachal was also conferred $11,900 scholarship from the US Embassy for the expedition, voiceonline.com reported. “This expedition will allow me to explore my passion for learning about the dynamics about climate change, delve into my passion for scientific research, and will give me an adventure of a lifetime,” said Sachal, who is a Grade 10 student at Seaquam Secondary School in British Columbia. “Upon my return, I will share my knowledge with the community in order to implement the changes that we need.” The participants, who will be guided by a team of scientists, artists and educators, will also visit remote Arctic communities, observe wildlife and hike through Auyuittuq National Park. Students on Ice (SOI), which began nearly 16 years ago, is a foundation that educates the world’s youth about the importance of the polar regions. Since its inception, more than 2,500 students and educators from 52 countries have participated in its expeditions.

All roads reopen as Burns Bog fire under control The 78-hectare Burns Bog fire in Delta is now 100 per cent contained, and Highway 17 has reopened, Delta city officials said.

While the fire fighting efforts have been scaled back, fire crews from Delta, Metro Vancouver and the province’s Wildfire Service team, will remain

at the scene. It’s expected to be some time before the blaze is completely extinguished. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and a scientific advisory panel has been called in to visit the site and provide guidance on directing the bog’s recovery. Delta Mayor Lois Jackson acknowledged the inconvenience to the public and area businesses of the Highway 17 closure, but said it was a key strategic decision that helped in the rapid containment of the fire which threatened Tilbury Industrial Park.
