South Asian student selected for Arctic expedition A 14-year-old South Asian Sikh student has been selected to take part in the prestigious ‘Students on Ice Arctic Expedition’, according to media reports. Beginning July 21, Abhayjeet Singh Sachal will travel along with a team of over a 100 highschool and university students from around the world. The expedition, which will take them to the eastern Canadian Arctic and western Greenland, will continue up to August 5. Sachal was also conferred $11,900 scholarship from the US Embassy for the expedition, voiceonline.com reported. “This expedition will allow me to explore my passion for learning about the dynamics about climate change, delve into my passion for scientific research, and will give me an adventure of a lifetime,” said Sachal, who is a Grade 10 student at Seaquam Secondary School in British Columbia. “Upon my return, I will share my knowledge with the community in order to implement the changes that we need.” The participants, who will be guided by a team of scientists, artists and educators, will also visit remote Arctic communities, observe wildlife and hike through Auyuittuq National Park. Students on Ice (SOI), which began nearly 16 years ago, is a foundation that educates the world’s youth about the importance of the polar regions. Since its inception, more than 2,500 students and educators from 52 countries have participated in its expeditions.

All roads reopen as Burns Bog fire under control The 78-hectare Burns Bog fire in Delta is now 100 per cent contained, and Highway 17 has reopened, Delta city officials said.

While the fire fighting efforts have been scaled back, fire crews from Delta, Metro Vancouver and the province’s Wildfire Service team, will remain

at the scene. It’s expected to be some time before the blaze is completely extinguished. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and a scientific advisory panel has been called in to visit the site and provide guidance on directing the bog’s recovery. Delta Mayor Lois Jackson acknowledged the inconvenience to the public and area businesses of the Highway 17 closure, but said it was a key strategic decision that helped in the rapid containment of the fire which threatened Tilbury Industrial Park. Foreigners bought 5.1 per cent of Metro Vancouver homes sold in June Foreign nationals, mainly Chinese, bought 5.1 per cent of the homes sold in Metro Vancouver in a three-week period of June, according to the first release by the B.C. government of data on the impact of offshore real estate investment. Speculation has swirled for years about the effect of offshore buyers, particularly from China, but the province only began tracking the citizenship of home buyers in June. Buyers are now required to declare on their property tax transfer form if they are Canadian citizens or permanent residents, or else provide their country of citizenship. Of the 5,118 property transactions in Metro from June 10-29, there were 260 deals with foreign buyers and 234 of those or 4.6 per cent declared Chinese citizenship. No other country accounted for more than 0.1 per cent of transactions, and Korea, Taiwan, India and Romania were the next highest sources. A total of 337 purchases by foreign nationals were made province-wide. Finance Minister Mike de Jong noted the average purchase price paid by foreign buyers was significantly higher at $1.1 million, compared to $735,000 for the average Canadian citizen or permanent resident. As a result, the homes bought by foreign nationals accounted for 6.5 per cent of the Metro Vancouver total by value, or $350 million worth of property. In Surrey, foreign transactions made up three per cent of the total but accounted for five per cent of the value of homes sold. Foreign purchases were most prevalent in Richmond, where they made up 14 per cent of the total counted, followed by 11 per cent in Burnaby and four per cent in Vancouver.

in, but said the province will finally have real evidence to base policy on. “It is actual, it is factual and it is beyond conjecture,” de Jong said. “It is beyond theories and speculation. I attach importance to the data and we’re going to approach it with an open mind.”

The province also released statistics showing 108,000 new housing units are at various stages of development within six

Metro Vancouver cities. They include 30,000 in Burnaby, 25,500 in Vancouver, 20,000 in Surrey, 16,500 in Richmond, 10,500 in New Westminster and 5,500 in Coquitlam. “In the purchase market and the rental market there is a vast number of housing projects on the books that if they were approved would begin to ease considerably some of that pressure,” de Jong said. De Jong also noted the province’s budget move to expand the exemption for lower priced homes from the property transfer tax is being used – an average of 27 families a day are buying PTTexempt homes. The finance minister also said demand for housing in B.C. is being driven by the fact more people want to come to this province than any other, and because B.C.’s

economy is strong, leading Canada in job creation. “It is a challenge virtually every other jurisdiction would like to have because it is a challenge associated with a growing economy,” de Jong said, adding that doesn’t detract from the “frustration” B.C. families feel that can’t find a place to rent or a home they can afford where they want to live. NDP leader John Horgan said the real level of foreign activity is likely considerably higher because the government’s statistics rely on self-reporting by buyers, and fail to include property purchases made through numbered companies or trusts. Even taking the data at face value, Horgan said, it means Lower Mainland residents were “squeezed out” of $20 million a day worth of property or nearly $400 million over the 19day period measured. “It’s outrageous and it has to stop,” Horgan said, denouncing de Jong’s response.

Man shot dead in Surrey park had long criminal record

Police have identified the victim who died of a gunshot wound in a Surrey park over the weekend as 27-year-old Brendan Aditya Chand. Chand’s body was discovered in Bog Park near the 9800 block of 130 Street at approximately 1:50 p.m. PT Sunday afternoon. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots in the neighbourhood around 10:30 p.m. PT on Saturday. In 2011 Chand pleaded guilty to shooting Abdul Aleem Khan, 25, in the back as he ran up the stairs of the Royal Oak SkyTrain station during a busy afternoon commute. Chand was under a ten year firearms ban at the time of the incident, and was also serving a conditional sentence for drug trafficking. Independent schools in B.C. run contrary to ‘elitist’ caricature Deani Van Pelt and Derek J. Allison Many British Columbians likely believe that private schools are exclusively for elite families in major urban centres. This misperception of independent schools (a more accurate term to describe nongovernment schools) impedes honest debate about the benefits of independent schools in the province. A recent Fraser Institute study based on provincial ministry data of every independent school in Canada found that rather than conforming to the dominant stereotype of the traditional private school (St. George’s in Vancouver, for example), independent schools actually come in a wide variety of types and serve many educational preferences. In 2013/14, British Columbia was home to 340 independent schools with 75,401 students, which accounted for 12.3 per cent of all school enrolment in the province. In other words, one of every eight students attends an independent school in B.C. Contrary to the “urban” stereotype, more than two of every five independent schools (42.9 per cent) in B.C. are located in rural or

small/medium-sized population centres. And more remarkably, only five per cent conform to the image of the traditional “elite” stereotype, which leaves 95 per cent of independent schools outside the “elite” sphere. There are two major types of independent schools in B.C. - schools with a religious orientation and specialty schools. More than 55 per cent of the province’s independent schools have a religious orientation. Exactly half (50.0 per cent) are Christian (non-Catholic) schools, 42.0 per cent are Catholic, 3.2 per cent are Jewish, 2.7 per cent are Islamic and 2.1 per cent have other religious perspectives. The vast majority of independent school students in B.C. (70.4 per cent) attend a religious-based school - an important fact since government-run schools in the province do not offer any religious alternatives like in other provinces. Subsequently, parents wanting a religious education for their children must rely on the independent school sector. The other major type of independent school provides a unique approach to teaching

(Montessori, for example), an emphasis on special needs students, or a specialized focus on distinct content. Sixty-eight such schools exist in B.C., representing 20 per cent of all independent schools in the province. Contrary to the “elitist” caricature of private schools, independent schools in B.C. offer diverse approaches to education, particularly religious-based education and alternative pedagogies. It’s time we recognize the “other 95 per cent” of independent schools in B.C. and the value they provide to students and parents across the province. Deani Van Pelt and Derek J. Allison are co-authors of the recently released study A Diverse Landscape: Independent Schools in Canada, available at www.fraserinstitute.org. Courtesy: Troy Media

Canadians can now apply to join the Senate Canadians can now submit their names for possible nomination to the Senate, with new changes announced by the Liberal government on Thursday. Under an interim process announced by the Liberals in December, potential senators had to be nominated by a community organization. But Canadians are now able to apply directly to fill vacancies in the Senate. 2 Islanders to help pick new P.E.I. senator In a statement, Maryam Monsef, the minister of democratic institutions, said opening the application process to all Canadians is “an important innovation that not only better involves Canadians in our parliamentary democracy, but also enhances transparency.” In addition, the Liberal government announced the names of eight new members of the independent advisory board that submits a short list of candidates to the prime minister for consideration. Canadian man is leader of ISIS group in Bangladesh

16

Continued from Page 1 As the attack unfolded, the so-called Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility. Bangladesh’s Daily Star reported last month a Bangladeshi-Canadian man named Tamim Chowdhury is leading a terror group that has aligned itself with ISIS. Going by the nom-deguerre Sheikh Abu Ibrahim AlHanif, Chowdhury is reportedly from Windsor, Ont. According to the University of Waterloo’s Amarnath Amarasingam, there’s not a lot more known about the man’s background or what role he might have played in the siege at the Holey Artisan Bakery. But, he thinks it’s “just a matter of time” before more of those details emerge. “Knowing that he’s the leader of… proISIS groups in Bangladesh, we can at least say that he had something to do with [last week’s] attack,” Amarasingam told. In April, Chowdhury was featured in the propaganda magazine Dabiq. In the edition he noted Bangladesh was in a strategic location for the Islamic State’s growing network of affiliates, particularly to move into neighbouring Myanmar and to launch attacks on India. Aside from Chowdhury, Amarasingam said there were about three other Bangladeshis he knows of, all from the Toronto area, who joined Islamic State ranks in Syria. Other than that, there “aren’t a whole lot of Bangladeshis who have become radicalized” in Canada that he knows of. “It’s not something specific to this community,” he said. It’s not known if another Canadian reportedly detained and questioned in

Bangladesh had anything to do with the execution of the attack or whether he was just an innocent hostage held captive during the 10-hour siege. The man was one of five former hostages detained after commandos

ended the siege. The pro-ISIS group Chowdhury is said to lead has been an active one, claiming responsibility for a series of recent attacks on secular and atheist bloggers, activists, journalists, academics and LGBTQ people, as well as attacks on Shiite mosques in the country. The Bangladeshi government, however, is reluctant to admit the so-called Islamic State has a presence in the country. The Daily Star newspaper on Monday said the bloody hostage crisis had left “the nation shattered and with a sense of extreme unease.” The editorial also criticized authorities’ consistent denial of the presence of any international terrorist groups, even as the Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack and released gruesome photographs that apparently depicted the torture of hostages.

All roads reopen as Burns Bog fire under control Continued from Page 1 Delta released a ground-level video showing the fire damage, including what appears to be a toppled tower, and the extinguishing efforts of firefighters. “We started off with a rather small fire and suddenly the wind picked up,” Jackson said of the early moments of the blaze, which she acknowledged were scary. Jackson said she doesn’t know who called in the fire, but said the early response was critical. And while high winds helped the fire quickly spread, Mother Nature provided assistance to firefighters in the form of cooler temperatures, showers and heavy rain. “It was a dangerous fire because it was so close to the industrial area,” she said. The 2005 Burns Bog fire was much bigger, and occurred during a heatwave and when the bog was extremely dry. Burns Bog has its caretakers, who play a critical role in the event of a fire, Jackson said. “We’re really lucky that we’ve got a whole ridge in North Delta…that overlooks the bog. Our people in all those houses, they’ve got their eyes open.” The city has worked with residents to let them know if they spot something, to call them immediately. “It’s a pretty fabulous community to work together with.” The investigation into the cause of the fire will be conducted by Delta Fire and the B.C. Wildlife Service. Jackson took a helicopter tour of the site Monday afternoon, and said no fire retardent had spread to farm crops in the area. No air quality advisory will be issued, she said. Three helicopters with buckets assisted the firefighting teams who are pushing the fire away from the Tilbury Industrial area. River Road and other roads in the industrial area were reopened at midnight Sunday. The evacuation at Progress Way, between 76 Street and 80 Street, will be lifted at 8 p.m. Monday. Highway 17 remains closed between Highway 91 and Highway 99, and is not expected to reopen this week. Residents from across the Lower Mainland both saw and smelled the smoke coming from the fire burning in Delta’s Burns Bog nature reserve on Sunday evening. The flames forced the evacuation of an industrial area and has drawn crews from all over the region. The BC Wildfire Service dispatched 28 personnel, five helicopters and two types of air tankers to help local firefighters battle the blaze that broke out earlier east of about the 7700 block of Highway 17. The flames grew quickly in a few hours, jumping Highway 17.

South Asian Man charged with groping 6 women at Disney water park A man has been accused of groping six people, including teenagers, at Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon water park in Florida. According to news reports, one of the victims told Orange County Sheriff ’s deputies she and 27-year-old Aman Bhatia were in the wave pool Sunday. She says that as waves crashed over her, she felt Bhatia’s hands all over her body. Another victim says she was in the wave pool when Bhatia grabbed her waist from behind. She was able to break loose from his grasp, but he grabbed her again. Four others reported similar incidents to authorities. Bhatia told officers he had broken his glasses and couldn’t see clearly, causing him to unintentionally touch people. It’s unclear if he has an attorney. Bhatia was arrested and faces several charges. Disney has banned him from the park.

Surinder is Surrey’s new chief librarian Surinder Bhogal is Surrey’s new chief librarian. A veteran of the Surrey Libraries system since 1997, Bhogal takes over from Melanie Houlden, her former boss, who had been at the helm since 2011 and retired last Thursday. “I’m very proud to be here at this moment in my life,” says Bhogal, the former deputy chief librarian, at her new office at the City Centre Library. “In September, I will have been here for 20 years.” Bhogal has worked for the Surrey Libraries as a branch manager at the City Centre, Strawberry Hill and Whalley branches, and as the Manager of Information Services at Guildford Library. She was instrumental in the planning and opening of both Strawberry Hill and City Centre libraries. Half a decade ago, she was part of the team that designed the unique North Surrey landmark. Admitting to a personal bias, she calls it a “fantastic building” – not yet to full capacity, and a major gathering place ready to evolve

with the needs of a growing community. “We are extremely pleased to have someone of Surinder Bhogal’s calibre as the new Chief Librarian,” said Library Board Chair Upkar Tatlay. “She will bring significant strengths to the role, including a deep a commitment to Surrey Libraries, a passion for improving literacy, as well as a strong understanding of upcoming opportunities and challenges and the important role that Surrey Libraries plays in the City of Surrey.” Bhogal was born in Tanzania and grew up in Kenya until age eight, when her family moved to the UK. She got her bachelor of Science in Management from the University of Manchester and later a masters degree in Library and Information Studies from University College London. Moving to Canada in 1996, one of Bhogal’s first jobs was at a Chapters store – she was curious about what Canadians read, she says.

Richmond woman's e-petition calls for end to birth tourism in Canada A Richmond woman who is seeking to end so-called birth tourism has more than 1,000 signatures on an electronic petition set to be introduced in the House of Commons. Kerry Starchuk wants the Liberal government to eliminate automatic citizenship for babies born in Canada to foreigners, unless one of the parents is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. Canada and the U.S. are the only G7 countries that allow birthright citizenship. Starchuk said the house next door to her Blundell home of 28 years is operating as a maternity motel for pregnant women from China. There is no official data about birth tourism. However, Richmond Hospital reported 299

non-resident births (295 to Chinese mothers) out of a total of 1,938 births for the year ended March 31. That represents nearly one out of every six babies born at the hospital. By comparison, Statistics Canada reported in 2012 that only 699 of 382,568 births across Canada — or about one out of 547 — were reported by mothers who were not Canadian residents. This home on Lancin Road in Richmond is a suspected birthing house, where pregnant women who are not Canadian citizens stay before giving birth in Canada. When Starchuk toured a reporter around her neighbourhood June 4, one obviously pregnant ethnic Chinese woman in a long blue and white maternity dress walked outside of the house accompanied by a male escort. “I want neighbours, I don’t want people that are coming and going that have no connection here,” said Starchuk, who has campaigned for English to be added to Chinese-only commercial signs in the predominantly Chinese Vancouver suburb. Starchuk’s Petition e-397, sponsored by Richmond Centre Conservative MP Alice Wong, needed to collect 500 valid signatures by Oct. 14 in order to be referred to the House of Commons for the Liberal government to

respond. It took less than three weeks since the June 16 launch for over 1,000 citizens to sign up. A signatory must enter his or her full name, province, postal code, telephone number and email address for verification by the Clerk of Petitions. According to the text of the petition, “The practice of ‘Birth Tourism’ can be very costly to taxpayers since it is used to ensure that after the child reaches 18 years of age Canada’s education system can be used at a publicly subsidized cost, and he/she can sponsor his/her parents and many other family members, thus taking advantage of Canada’s public health system and social security programmes such as [Old Age Security] and the [Guaranteed Income Supplement].” “I don’t have a problem with a baby, but I have a problem with the long-term consequences,” Starchuk said. “If you’re coming here to have a baby and the baby is going to be here to use a lot of the services, and there’s no commitment until the kid gets older, then there is more take than there is give.” The chief executive of the SUCCESS multicultural agency said only new immigrants and permanent residents are eligible for federally funded services. Queenie Choo said SUCCESS serves new immigrants and permanent residents, but it would be wise for government to collect more data on birth tourism.

Vancouver may boost family unit requirements in new developments Vancouver city councillors are being asked to boost requirements for family homes in new strata and rental buildings. At least 35 per cent of units in new rezoning projects for residential strata developments would need to be suitable for families if councillors approve a report headed to council next week. Historically, Vancouver did not ensure enough family housing units were built to meet demand, said Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson. “This important policy will help make our neighbourhoods more family friendly and vibrant, and ensure that as Vancouver grows, families can find housing options that work for them,” he said in a news release. A minimum of 25 per cent of the units

in such strata developments would have to include two-bedrooms and another 10 per cent would have to be threebedroom units. Meanwhile, a target would be set for a minimum of 35 per cent family units for secured market rental housing developments. The city now has policies that generally seek a minimum of 25 per cent family units in new developments, according to the report. More family housing is crucial to the city’s economic health, according to the report, which stated that “adequate, affordable and attractive housing for family households with parents in their 30s and 40s is a necessity if the city is to “attract and retain talent” and foster economic investment.”

Canada’s jobless rate dips in June as fewer seek work Canada’s unemployment rate dipped slightly in June, despite a sharp drop in fulltime jobs and other evidence of a weak month for hiring, as the number of people actively participating in the labour force declined. Statistics Canada’s monthly Labour Force Survey showed that the unemployment rate fell to 6.8 per cent in June from 6.9 per cent in May, even though employment actually slipped a thin 700 jobs in the month – an essentially flat reading in a survey that has a statistical margin of error of plus or minus 29,500 each month. The lower unemployment rate was the result of a dip in the participation rate – the percentage of the working-age population that is either working or actively

seeking work – to 65.5 per cent from 65.7 per cent, marking a 16-year low. The employment number was slightly weaker than the modest 5,000-job gain that economists had expected, and represented a pullback from the nearly 14,000 jobs the economy added in May. More worrisome was a 40,100-job decline in full-time employment, a sharp about-face after the big 60,500 gain reported in May. Those losses were offset by a 39,400-job gain in part-time work. The trade-off between fulland part-time work meant that actual hours worked fell 0.4 per cent in the month. Meanwhile, jobs on public-sector payrolls fell 27,900, and private-sector payrolls were down 10,500. Self-employment rose 37,700.

Wanted man arrested in Surrey underground parking garage A Surrey man wanted on several outstanding warrants was arrested by RCMP early Wednesday morning in South Surrey. Police located the suspect and his vehicle in the 1600-block of 154 Street at approximately 1:50 a.m. July 6. Surrey RCMP and Gang Enforcement Team officers converged on the area, and with the assistance of Integrated Police Dog Services, made an arrest as the vehicle was attempting to leave an underground parking area. Jason Lindgren, 33, was arrested and taken to hospital with minor injuries. Lindgren is a parolee facing Breach of Undertaking and Breach of Recognizance

charges, as well as the several charges out of Maple Ridge, including kidnapping, forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and pointing a firearm. Police say additional charges relating to Lindgren’s arrest in Surrey are likely. “This latest arrest is another example of the progress being made to safely remove such dangerous and high-risk offenders from Lower Mainland communities, said Surrey RCMP Insp. Shawna Baher. “The expediency with which this arrest was affected is a direct result of the coordination amongst multiple police agencies working together to minimize risk and enhance public safety throughout the region.

Revenue Canada probe of pharmacies finds $58M in hidden income

A federal probe of Canadian retail pharmacists who received gift cards, travel vouchers, pre-paid credit cards and other “incentives from generic drug firms has turned up more than 1,000 who failed to pay the taxes due on the unreported benefits, drawing penalties for some. The four-year Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) investigation found more than $58 million worth of hidden income by pharmacists and their corporations across the country. “While there have been no criminal charges filed in connection with the compliance action, penalties for failing to

report incentives as income have been levied, said agency spokeswoman Jelica Zdero. The results of the probe, now nearing completion, come at an awkward time for the pharmacy industry, which is lobbying the government to sell medical marijuana because Canadians “trust pharmacists. Uncovered details of the massive operation, which involved two Federal Court applications, mail-outs of warning letters to some 22,000 pharmacies, and meetings with pharmacy associations and regulators across the country.

Renting no longer viable alternative to home ownership A new report from Vancity says that renting is no longer a viable option for millennials in the Lower Mainland. The report suggests working millenials aren’t just getting priced out of home ownership, but that the rental market is also increasingly unaffordable. “I think there’s almost an assumption for that for those who can’t afford to own, well they can rent,” said William Azaroff, vice president of community investment with Vancity. “Now what we’re seeing when we really look into the rental market more explicitly, is actually that’s not true.” According to the report, weekly wages grew by 6.6% in B.C. between 2011 and 2015, while average rent increased at a rate nearly double that, up by 11.4% in Metro Vancouver.

The report says while wages are on the rise, average rent is increasing twice as fast. (Vancity Credit Union) The report also found only two neighbourhoods in Vancouver remain

affordable to renters — Marpole and East Hastings. The report said renters earning median

incomes face being priced out of their neighbourhoods with a limited amount of stock to choose from, as vacancy rates continue to be an issue for affordable housing. “It is that combination where housing doesn’t just have to be affordable to say the average salary earner, it also has to be available,” Azaroff said. “And it is the confluence of those two things working together, or in a lot of cases not working together, that adds to this.” The report lists recommendations to protect the current rental housing stock and suggests increasing supply by offering incentives to developers. The report also suggests the government offer tax incentives to developers and owners of units.

Abbotsford man sentenced to 18 months for sexual offenses Five months before Abbotsford resident Andrew Theodore Dennis and a teenage girl had sex, the Canadian parliament raised the age of consent from 14 to 16, making their encounter illegal. On Wednesday, Abbotsford Provincial Court judge Jay Solomon sentenced Dennis to a conditional sentence of 18 months, nine months of it under house arrest with a dawn-to-dusk curfew. Judge Solomon also ordered Dennis to be on probation for two years after serving his sentence. The now-34-year-old Dennis had earlier pleaded guilty to two sex-related charges, one of sexual assault for having sex with the 14-year-old in September of 2008 . Earlier that same year, in May, the Conservative government passed its Tackling Violent Crime Act , which raised the legal age of sexual consent in Canada to 16 from 14. The judge referred to the change in law as an “unusual circumstance” of the case.

City of Vancouver set to increase housing options for families Vancouver council will consider measures next week designed to increase the number of family homes in new strata and rental buildings. New policies outlined in a staff report to council would alter the housing mix in new condos by increasing the number of two and three bedroom apartments to create more options for families. According to an official statement from Mayor Gregor Robertson, the housing mix policy “will help make our neighbourhoods more family friendly and vibrant, and ensure

NEED WORKERS, PAY ACCORDING TO EXPERIENCE

that as Vancouver grows, families can find housing options that work for them.” Under the proposal, developers would have to ensure at least 35 per cent of the apartments in a new building contain two or three bedrooms to accommodate families. The policy would apply to rezonings citywide and would supersede existing family housing requirements in council-approved community plans such as Joyce-Collingwood or the Cambie Corridor.

Victoria tent city ruling welcomed by poverty activists, neighbours Victoria’s long-standing tent city will be dismantled over the coming weeks, but

advocates for the homeless are still declaring victory. On Tuesday, a B.C. judge granted the provincial government an injunction to shut down the homeless camp, which has been set up on the provincial courthouse lawn since the fall. The court ruling allows the province to evict people living in tents and shelters, but only once new social housing opens in the next few weeks. Stephen Portman with the Together Against Poverty Society said the decision is a win for people who formed the camp to take a stand against living on the street. “The chief justice’s decision, in many respects, I think, reaffirms what the residents of this tent city have been calling for since a single tent was put on that lawn,” he said.

Temper-tantrum toddler finally gets to meet Harjit Sajjan

The two-year-old who threw a tantrum after missing Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan during Canada Day celebrations because he was at home in Vancouver finally got her way. Sophia Popalyar was invited to Parliament where she met Sajjan and was given a personalized tour by the minister. “Let’s go sit in the Speaker’s chair,” Sajjan said to the toddler in a video posted by the Liberal Party of Canada on Thursday. The minister then explains to his young fan a Speaker’s job is “like the principal” as she pressed buttons on the motor-powered chair. He hands her several gifts including a miniature hockey stick, they fist bump, and Sajjan concludes by saying he expects the politically astute toddler will be imparting her wisdom very soon. Popalyar went viral last fall when her dad posted a video of her rhyming off the names of several cabinet ministers. On Canada Day, Popalyar was headed to Parliament Hill for celebrations where she thought she would see Sajjan. So when her family decided to turn around and head home because of rain, she burst into tears. Her father filmed the hysterics, posting the video online. “I want to go to Parliament,” she’s heard crying in the video. “To see who?” her dad asks.

The province has made hundreds of new housing and shelter spaces available since the tent city popped up in the fall. Advocates hope it’s a big step towards helping the roughly 1,400 people who are homeless in Victoria. Even though the encampment will not disappear immediately — campers have until August 8 to dismantle their belongings — the court ruling comes as a relief for neighbours, who have long complained the camp is a magnet for drugs, crime and disruptive behaviour. “Living here for the past 18 years was beautiful until this, and now we will get it back,” said Don Allen, who lives across the street.

Langley teen dead after vehicle collision with dump truck in Delta A 17-year-old Langley boy was killed and a 23-year-old woman, also from Langley, is in serious condition after a crash involving a

tandem dump truck and a vehicle in Delta on Wednesday, July 6. Around 9 a.m., Delta Police responded to a collision between a tandem dump truck and a passenger vehicle in the 9800 block of Ladner Trunk Road. As a result of the collision, the

dump truck rolled over onto the vehicle, crushing the black Pontiac Sunfire. Both vehicles ended up in the ditch. The 17-year-old passenger died at the scene as a result of his injuries. The 23-year-old driver of the Pontiac was transported to hospital with serious injuries that are not believed to be life threatening, said Delta Police. Police still aren’t sure how the crash happened. As part of the investigation, Delta Police Traffic Section investigators would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed the collision or the events leading up to it. Anyone who believes they may have any information is asked to call Const. Grayson Smith at 604-946-4411.

Drug trafficker used illicit proceeds to buy Surrey house, government claims A convicted trafficker facing new drug and firearms charges laundered his illicit profits through the purchase of a Surrey house, the B.C. government alleges in a civil suit. B.C.’s director of civil forfeiture says career criminal Frederic Wilson is the actual owner of the house at 5846 134A Street, even though it’s registered in the name of his brother-in-law, Phoukhong Phommaviset. “Phoukhong Phommaviset is a nominee and is holding the title to the property for the true beneficial owner, Frederic Wilson,” says the statement of claim filed in B.C. Supreme Court. Phommaviset has filed a response to the lawsuit, stating “the property was acquired with lawful proceeds, including, but not

limited to employment income, rental income, capital gains, borrowings and/or savings.” Frederic Wilson with his common-inspouse Lani Koonpackdee. FACEBOOK Phommaviset “denies any involvement in criminal activity or receiving any proceeds directly or indirectly, that, to his knowledge, were proceeds of unlawful activity.” His most recent came in April when a Vancouver judge found him guilty of possession of cocaine, methamphetamine and MDMA for the purpose of trafficking, as well as two precursor chemicals used to make meth. He was sentenced to seven years in jail on June 30. And he is still facing a series of new counts stemming from his arrest in May at a White Rock drug lab.

Vancouver investigates Kitsilano apartment block hosting 17 Airbnb units The City of Vancouver is investigating the operation of 17 short-term rental units in a Kitsilano apartment block. There are 17 Airbnb listings in the New York Apartments at 2341 York Ave. near Kitsilano Beach. The two-storey building has 29 units, according to its owner, and is zoned as a medium-density residential development. In Vancouver, all rental tenancies must be at least 30 days except in hotels and licensed bed and breakfasts, but the vast majority of Airbnb hosts violate this regulation. In online reviews,

many users say they stayed at the New York for just a few days. The building was sold last July for $3.8 million to Nevin Sangha of Carrera Management Corp. Sangha said his firm manages around 300 conventional rental units in the Lower Mainland, and stressed that the New York is the firm’s only building using Airbnb. The reason for the Airbnb units, he said, is because his staff has struggled to rent out the New York’s SRO units using traditional methods such as Craigslist.

Harjit Sajjan going back to drawing board on fighter jets, launching consultations

The long road to replacing the Air Force’s aging fighter jets took another turn Wednesday, as the Liberal government announced it will consult with industry to determine the best new aircraft for Canada. The move, announced by Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan in a speech to industry representatives, comes after reports last month that the Liberals were considering buying Boeing Super Hornet fighter jets without a competition. Sajjan said no decision on a new fighter has been made. Rather, officials from National Defence and other federal departments will sit down with fighter jet manufacturers through the summer to determine what they can offer. “Officials will seek up-to-date information from leading manufacturers on key issues,

including cost, economic benefits for Canada, and their ability to deliver planes quickly,” he said. “That information will inform a decision on a procurement path in the coming months.” It’s not the first time the government has held such consultations. The Conservatives launched a similar exercise in December 2012 as it pressed pause on its plans to purchase the F-35 stealth fighter. Those consultations, which were overseen by an independent panel, included a fulsome assessment of what Canada needs in a new fighter jet, and what options were available. The final report, released in December 2014, came out favourably for the F-35. Critics, however, said such consultations could not replace an open competition as there was no way to fully test each company’s claims.

Women-only workout upheld by human rights tribunal

A Vancouver man has lost his claim that his human rights are being violated by womenonly workout times at a downtown eastside gym.

According to a B.C. Human Rights Tribunal decision, Craig Teneycke’s complaint against the City of Vancouver and the Ray-Cam Community Centre has no reasonable prospect of succeeding. “The respondents are likely to succeed in establishing that setting aside the two-hour women only time slot in a fitness centre is rationally connected to the goal of providing vulnerable women with a safe environment in which to exercise as part of ongoing efforts to improve the health of these women,” wrote tribunal member Vladimir Pylypchuk. “If men were permitted to exercise along with women, that would defeat the very purpose of providing a safe place, or a safe environment for women who feel vulnerable in such circumstances. ‘Teneycke claimed he was discriminated against in September 2014 when

a Ray-Cam clerk told him the weight room was reserved for women daily from 1 to 3 p.m. As part of his submissions, he claimed he was “verbally assaulted, intimidated and threatened” by another patron at a different time when he asked him how many sets he had left on one of the machines. “According to the complainant, removing two hours from a 12hour day leaves males with only 10 hours in which to work out and greatly increases the risk of interaction between abusers and other peaceful male users of the gym,” the decision reads. “The complainant goes on to argue that by setting aside time for women only, Ray-Cam is actually feeding the stereotype that women are helpless and need protection.” In his quixotic attempt to gain access for all at Ray-Cam’s weight training room, Teneycke challenged the conclusions of the landmark 2006 decision: Stopps v. Just Ladies Fitness. In both cases, the tribunal members said there was no doubt that men were being discriminated against on the basis of their gender. But that wasn’t the end of the considerations. In order for a human rights complaint to succeed a complainant would have to prove that the discrimination had resulted in some kind of adverse effect. And in both cases, there was no lack of other fitness facilities men could attend.

South Asian community is proud of new BC Lions

Energizing and spreading the Canadian Football League game to tap into a specific ethnic market was not the aim of the B.C. Lions when they added Jaskaran (Jas) Dhillon to the practice roster to back up starting centre Cody Husband, the resident Bollywood component on the team. Dan Dorazio, the offensive line coach, sees only players with the mental acuity, requisite size and physical tools necessary to play perhaps the least glamorous position in professional sports. “What we see in Jas is a guy who’s hungry,” Dorazio says of the second-year Lion from UBC. “We see a guy who’s doing everything he can to learn how to play better. We see a young player, but an improving player.” What obsesses Dorazio about Husband is his “punch” — his long arms that can rock a defensive lineman and adversely affect his ability to get to the quarterback. With just two games as a starting centre in the CFL, Husband is part of a reconstituted offensive line that has been able to outhit and outwit opponents as the Lions have jumped out to a surprising 2-0 start. “No. 1, Cody is a very bright individual,” Dorazio says. “No. 2, he’s pretty calm. You need that calm presence inside. No. 3, he’s got great length. He’s got 35-inch (arm) length.

That’s his friend. Everybody wishes they had arms like that. That’s what we call body integrity.” Built along the lines of an elongated Brahma bull, Husband, at 6-7 and 310 pounds, is quite unlike any centres of recent vintage with the Lions. Retired Angus Reid, the decorated centre who appeared in more than 200 regular-season games, 11 playoff contests and three Grey Cups — winning two — was a squatter and infinitely more voluble presence than Husband, who is as humble and unassuming as he is physically imposing. “There’s always pressure on the O-line, there are so many moving parts,” Husband says. “If one person screws up, then that can just kill the play. Everybody has to be on the same page. We’re new at every position, but we’ve had to be on point since Game One. Waiting to get it together by Game Six might be too late.” Though they handle the football more than any other player, with the exception of the quarterback, centres spend most of their time bent over, down in the figurative dirt, with another man’s hands on their buttocks. It’s a thankless job that values smash over flash, takes a lot of blame when things go wrong and receives little glory when things go right.

Surrey RCMP arrest suspect wanted on numerous warrants

Police investigate South Vancouver shooting

Surrey RCMP advises that they have arrested a male suspect wanted on numerous outstanding warrants. Jason LINDGREN, a 33 year old Surrey resident, was taken into custody earlier this morning after he was located in the South Surrey area. On July 7th at approximately 1:50am, Surrey RCMP located LINDGREN and his vehicle in the 1600 block of 154th Street. Surrey RCMP General Duty and Gang Enforcement Team officers converged on the area, with the assistance of the Integrated Police Dog Services, and located the vehicle attempting to exit an underground parking garage. A high risk arrest ensued and the suspect was taken into police custody. LINDGREN was subsequently taken to hospital with minor injuries. LINDGREN is currently a Provincial parolee facing Breach of Undertaking and Breach of Recognizance charges, as well as the following charges out of Maple Ridge: Kidnapping, Forcible Confinement, Assault with a Weapon, Assault Causing Bodily Harm, and Pointing a Firearm. Investigators are working together and believe more charges will be forthcoming regarding his capture in Surrey. “This latest arrest is another example of the progress being made to safely remove such dangerous and high risk offenders from Lower Mainland communities,” says Surrey RCMP Inspector Shawna Baher, Proactive Enforcement Officer. “The expediency with which this arrest was affected is a direct result of the coordination amongst multiple police agencies working together to minimize risk and enhance public safety throughout the region.”

Vancouver Police were called to a residential area at East 59th Avenue and Fraser Street at 12:30 a.m. PT Wednesday after receiving several 911 calls from people who said they heard shots fired. When officers arrived, they found a black SUV riddled with bullet holes. No one was in the vehicle at the time of the shooting and police say no one was injured. Vancouver Police say there are no suspects, but they are asking witnesses to contact them. The investigation is ongoing.

Richmond Hospital Improvements By: Balwant Sanghera India Cultural Centre of Canada’s Gurdwara Nanak Niwas is a hub of activity for weddings and other activities especially during the summer months. In addition to that, every Monday is also a very busy day. First, it is the yoga class led by veteran yoga teacher Nashattar Singh Mattharu. That is followed by Chai Chaupal, a program jointly sponsored by the Richmond Multicultural Community Services and the Gurdwara. However, this past Monday, July4 had a lot more. In addition to the yoga class there was also the clinic for cholesterol and blood pressure. There was a long line up of people waiting to have their blood pressure and cholesterol checked. From there they moved on to an exciting information session about Richmond Hospital. Members of the Chai Chaupal group had expressed an interest in learning more about the hospital services and the proposed acute care tower. Consequently, Jon Hicke, Director of Marketing and Communications for Richmond Hospital Foundation was invited to share information about these subjects with members of the congregation who are also active participants in these programs. Jon Hicke explained in detail the need for more modern updated facilities and equipment. He stated that the current hospital is 50 years old. During the past 50 years the population of Richmond has quadrupled from 50,000 to more than 200,000. Also, with the aging population there is need for more acute care facilities and equipment. In answer to questions from the attendees, Jon Hicke mentioned that the

wheels have been set in motion for a new acute care tower. Once the business plan is in place and community funding is secured, Richmond Hospital administration along with Vancouver Coastal Health will be approaching the provincial government for its approval to go ahead. He emphasized that all three of Richmond

MLAs-Teresa Wat, Linda Reid and John Yap – are on board for this project and have assured the Foundation Board of their full support. In the meantime the fundraising campaign launched by India Cultural Centre of Canada Gurdwara Nanak Niwas is going very well. Any donation-big or small- would be much appreciated. Potential donors can contact the Gurdwara at 604-274-7479 or me at 604-836-8976.

Victoria lawyer and former city councillor appointed head of BC Transit A high-profile Victoria lawyer with ties to the B.C. Liberal Party — Frank Carson — is the new chair of B.C. Transit’s board of directors. The announcement was made Monday by the Ministry of Transportation. In a statement, Transportation Minister Todd Stone said Carson has served on the boards of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, the Victoria Police Board and served on the Oak Bay Municipal Council for 12 years. He added, Carson has, in the past, provided legal counsel to B.C. Transit, TransLink and Canada Line Rapid Transit Inc. “B.C. Transit, the province and 1.6 million B.C. Transit users are fortunate to have Mr. Carson take on this challenging and important position, and I look forward to working with him as we continue to invest in and expand transit service throughout the province,” said Stone. Former chair Kevin Mahoney is stepping done after nine years on the B.C. Transit Board.

B.C. Transit oversees the bus system in most of the province outside of Metro Vancouver, After the announcement was made, some on social media were quick to point out Carson’s ties to the B.C. Liberals. Carson is married to Primrose Carson, the executive director of the B.C. Liberal caucus. He also served as a legal advisor to the party. In a statement, Stone defended the appointment, saying all decisions are merit-based and follow an open, transparent and consistent process. He pointed to the Board Resourcing Development Office which establishes guidelines for all provincial appointments. “[Carson] will be able to draw from this broad range of experience as he advises and guides B.C. Transit in the coming years. Simply put, he is the best person for this important and challenging role,” said Stone.

Victoria mum says ex-husband accused of abducting their 4 Canadian children detained in Iran Saren Azer, the Iranian-Canadian father wanted for allegedly abducting his four Canadian children, has been detained by Iranian officials according to his ex-wife. Alison Azer held a press conference in Ottawa Tuesday calling upon Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to take action by contacting the Iranian President. “Iran detained the fugitive responsible for the abduction of my Canadian children and Canada has been silent in response,” she said. “The time for leadership is now.” Alison Azer said the RCMP’s request to speak with Interpol Iran has been blocked by senior Canadian government officials, something that is preventing the case from moving forward. Canada does not have a formal diplomatic relationship with Iran but Alison Azer says that shouldn’t be an issue in this circumstance. “You don’t need diplomatic relations to pick up the phone,” she told the CBC’s Rick Cluff on the CBC’s The Early Edition. “Countries do it all the time.” When asked about the Azer case Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded that “the Azer children are a real preoccupation, not just for Canadians but for our

government.” “We call on the Minister of Global Affairs to respond to these serious allegations and if true, the minister must immediately explain why officials from his department prevented the RCMP from working to secure the return of these four Canadian children,” she said. According to the group trying to bring the Azer children back to Canada, Saren Azer was detained in the province of West Azerbaijan on June 12. That was after Canada issued an Interpol Red Notice — similar to an international arrest warrant — on four charges of child abduction. Saren Azer is currently out on bail and scheduled to appear in Iranian court in the coming weeks. The children, originally from Comox, B.C. on Vancouver Island, are also in West Azerbaijan according to Alison Azer. “We’ve been able to weave together information from a variety of sources,” she said. “They’re now in the city of Urmia. I’m not sure who is there with the children and obviously it’s a matter of extreme concern to me.”

American crashes through Pacific Highway border crossing The Canada Border Services Agency says a driver heading into Canada at the Pacific Highway border crossing from Washington state into B.C. on Tuesday afternoon “failed to report.” RCMP in Surrey, B.C., said the suspect, a U.S. citizen, was allegedly in possession of a firearm. Sgt. Alanna Dunlop said officers followed the suspect into south Surrey, before he headed back south toward the border crossing. She said the suspect was stopped on the U.S. side of the border and taken into custody without incident. Witness Cadi Schiffer says she was waiting to get through the border into Canada shortly before 3 p.m. PT when she heard “a lot of yelling” followed by six to seven popping sounds about two lanes over from where she was waiting. “All the border officers ran towards the car and starting yelling with their weapons out and surrounded him,” she said. ‘He pretty much just hit the gas and blasted through the officers.” Schiffer said several police cars sped after the driver as he headed north with his trunk open. She said the border crossing was closed for about 10 minutes before border agents began letting people through as usual. Another witness, Mitch Hayes, confirmed what Schiffer saw, but said he watched as the same driver attempted to make his way back to the U.S. border about 15 minutes later, with about 10 police vehicles in pursuit. “All of a sudden I started hearing a whole pile of sirens,” he said. “And then I had customs agents literally running right past me.” Hayes said the car, a black Jetta with Washington plates, made it to within about 10 to 15 metres from one of the booths before it was stopped.

James Bond-worthy crime spree damages boats across Salish Sea RCMP say they’ve arrested a 25-year-old man after a suspected long weekend crime spree that went from Vancouver Island all the way to the Sunshine Coast. “We would expect this sort of crime spree to happen in a James Bond movie, not in the waters of coastal British Columbia,” said Sunshine Coast RCMP Const. Harrison Mohr. Police say the Vancouver Island man began a string of boat thefts south of Duncan on Vancouver Island last Wednesday. They say the suspect allegedly stole a fivemetre fibreglass boat in Cobble Hill and headed towards Cowichan Bay, where he then fled in another boat — Mohr said it’s not clear if that one had been stolen as well. On Saturday, three days later, the suspect arrived at a dock in Sechelt driving an eightmetre Boston Whaler reported stolen from Salt Spring Island. Police say the suspect then stole a car and

drove down the Sunshine Coast to Gibsons, where he took to the water again. Mohr said the man stole another Boston Whaler and made his way to Keats Island, where he then stole a six-metre Campion Explorer boat that he crashed into rocks on Bowen Island, injuring himself in the process. Police say the suspect broke into a cabin on Bowen, where police finally found him Sunday with a small amount of what they believe is methamphetamine. The suspect is to appear in North Vancouver provincial court for a bail hearing Tuesday. “Unfortunately the impact of this man’s actions are real,” said Mohr in a written statement. “Numerous property owners are now dealing with recovering their stolen property and adding up the extensive damage done.”

Cirque du Soleil working on circus camp for at-risk Surrey kids The circus is coming to town for a number of at-risk children and youth in Surrey. SOS Children’s Village is launching a “social circus” program with Cirque du Soleil and the Vancouver Circus School to teach kids life skills like resilience and teamwork. “We do human pyramids, so they learn to climb on each other, there’s the physicality,” Cirque du Soleil’s Samuel Jabour told On The Coast host Stephen Quinn. “But what are we really working [when] doing pyramids? We’re working how they learn to communicate, how they learn to trust each other, to trust their own body.” “If you put a kid, that’s say, had a rough past … and you put him in front of 200 people and he’s getting claps, what are we working there? We’re working him, his own confidence, his self-esteem, learning to work with the group

towards a common target: to achieve a show.” Jabour participated in a Montreal social circus as a teenager, and it has since become his life. He works for Cirque training other trainers for social circus. He says circus camps like these are different from other summer camps because of the variety kids get. They have to work on their own, in pairs and in larger groups. They have to use their bodies as well as their creativity. He says circus can help youth in all kinds of situations, including South Africa, where he trained a group of HIV-positive children. “At the first workshop, 30 minutes was enough for them in terms of physicality and energy that they can give,” he said. “After two years, we would see them do a 45-minute show with the trampoline and do two hours of workshop no problem.”

Dial-a-doper facing deportation gets break after judge sentences him to weekends in jail A judge has given a break to a Richmond dial-a-doper facing possible deportation back to Afghanistan for his drug-trafficking crimes. In imposing a 90-day intermittent sentence on Aimal Ameeri, B.C. Supreme Court Justice Nigel Kent said he had taken into account the “harsh” immigration consequences facing the offender as a factor in sentencing. In 2013, the Conservative government had passed a law that removed the right of criminals without citizenship to appeal deportation if they received a sentence of greater than six months in jail. Before that amendment, criminals lost any appeals if their sentences were greater than two years in jail. In Ameeri’s case, the Crown had called for a one-year jail term, which would have ended any hopes he might have of appealing a removal order from Canada. The defence called for a suspended sentence, or if jail was necessary, 90 days in prison to be served on weekends. In his ruling, Kent said he did have the discretion to taken into account the “collateral” immigration consequences, provided the sentence ultimately imposed upon the accused was proportionate to the gravity of the offence and the degree of responsibility of the offender. He said those immigration consequences were only one of the relevant factors to be

taken into account on sentencing. A suspended sentence, he said, would not be warranted, considering the combination of Ameeri’s prior criminal record and the absence of any meaningful remorse or acknowledgment of harm done to society. “On the other hand, I do recognize and take into account both the harsh immigration consequences of a sentence exceeding six months and that such incarceration would effectively terminate the rehabilitation gains made over the past three years by the accused staying out of trouble, securing fulltime employment and generally behaving in a more responsible manner to the benefit of not only himself and his immediate family, but also of society as a whole.” The B.C. Supreme Court has made at least two other rulings this year that have dealt with immigration consequences facing criminals without citizenship. In March, Justice William Ehrcke gave a cocaine dealer a lower sentence, so the noncitizen wouldn’t face automatic deportation to his native country. The judge sentenced Mark Abude, now 29, who came to Canada from the Philippines at age 14 and is a permanent resident, to a sentence of six months less a day. Abude had pleaded guilty to one count of trafficking in North Vancouver for selling cocaine to an undercover officer eight times over several months in 2012.

Surrey Fire crews battle fire in vacant city-owned house Surrey fire crews successfully contained a large fire that broke out in a house on 140 Street late Saturday night. Neighbours called 911 after seeing large flames and smoke coming from a single story rancher near 106 Avenue and 140 Street around 11 p.m. Saturday. “We found nobody inside, so there’s no any injuries to residents or any of my crews,” said Battalion Chief Gary McHarg, at the scene. McHarg said the house is on property that belongs to the City

of Surrey, but he didn’t know what the city’s intended use for it was. “They might be for development, park land, or schools, anything like that,” he said. “The city has to buy property for that sometimes. It could be that — it could be something else.” The fire spread quickly into the roof and attic, but crews were able to contain most of the damage to those areas. McHarg said the fire investigator will be looking into the incident later in the week.

Brexit shocks hit EU-Canada trade deal as new hurdles emerge The European Union put its landmark free-trade accord with Canada on a slow track for approval, increasing the risk of a veto amid an anti-globalization backlash across Europe. The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, proposed that its first trade agreement with a fellow member of the

Group of Seven leading industrialized countries face ratification by national parliaments in the 28-member bloc. This marks a retreat from an initial goal to require backing only by governments and the European Parliament. The decision follows last month’s U.K. vote to leave the EU and warnings against bypassing lawmakers by countries such as Austria that underscore popular disenchantment with supranational decision-making. The reversal, which goes against the commission’s own legal opinion, also signals a longer and bumpier road for the planned EU-U.S. trade agreement for which the Canada pact is a model. “We call upon the member states, who have all asked for this agreement, who have all welcomed it, to also show the leadership to defend it vis-a-vis their parliaments and their citizens,” European Trade Commissioner Cecilia Malmstroem told reporters on Tuesday in Strasbourg, France. “This is a really good agreement.” The accord would boost EU economic output by about 12 billion euros ($13 billion) a year and increase EU-Canadian trade by about a quarter, according to EU estimates. As recently as February, the two sides envisaged that the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, or CETA, would take effect in 2017.

Beyond lengthening the approval process, the ratification route through national and even some regional parliaments hands any one of them veto power. Malmstroem said she wants the deal to apply provisionally before ratifications are completed. German Chancellor Angela Merkel, a Christian Democrat whose Social Democratic coalition partner criticized the commission’s original stance on CETA, signaled support for a stronger national role in ratification. “Requiring national parliaments to vote on freetrade agreements isn’t a novelty,” Merkel told reporters in Berlin on Tuesday. The political pitfalls risk undermining the credibility of the EU as it sidesteps stalled World Trade Organization efforts to open markets by seeking commerce deals with individual countries or groups of nations. Negotiations on the EU-Canada agreement, the bloc’s most ambitious to date, began in 2009. The accord would end 98 percent of tariffs on goods traded from the outset and 99 percent after seven years. Each side would dismantle all industrial tariffs and more than 90 percent of agricultural duties. Markets for services and public procurement would also be opened. “I continue to be very, very optimistic about this,” Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau told reporters in Montreal. “The approach the EU is moving forward on is a positive one.” The EU is Canada’s No. 2 trade partner after the U.S., and Canada is the EU’s 12thbiggest, according to the commission. EUCanada trade in goods was 59.1 billion euros in 2014, while services commerce totaled 27.2 billion euros. In an effort to win over European skeptics, the two sides amended the deal after it was struck in 2014 to scale back protection for foreign investors. The provisions on socalled Investor-State Dispute Settlement are also being inserted into a draft EU-Vietnam trade pact completed last year and will be the model for treatment of foreign investors in the planned EU-U.S. deal, the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership.

4 civilians charged for alleged $1.3M fraud at CFB Halifax The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service has charged four civilians in the Halifax area with fraud. Former CFB Halifax civilian employees, Bry’n Ross, 61, and Wayne Langille, 70, are accused of colluding to overcharge for expensive parts for heating systems. Ross is a former civilian contracts officer and Langille is a former heating plant manager at the base. Both are charged, after a four-year

investigation, with one count of fraud over $5,000 and one count of fraud on the government. Dartmouth business owner Harold Dawson, 57, and his wife Kim Dawson, 54, face the same charges. It’s alleged four Nova Scotia shell companies were created to bid on contracts. It’s also alleged those four companies then competed among themselves to supply the parts to CFB Halifax.

Gay Syrian refugee proudly marches next to Trudeau in Pride parade Bassel Mcleash’s long journey from Syria to Toronto and finally to Sunday’s Pride parade was anything but smooth. It was a road filled with war, hatred and hardship, which is why the chance to participate in his first Pride parade was so special. “To be honest, I’m totally speechless,” he said as he moved towards the start of the parade. “The excitement and the emotion that’s happening, it’s overwhelming. It’s too much to handle.” Moments later, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stepped in front of the large group of politicians and supporters that Mcleash had joined. At most, Mcleash

had hoped to capture a glimpse of Canada’s celebrity prime minister. Standing 5-foot-1, it was easy for the 29-year-old Syrian refugee to work his way to the front of the group and next to the leader of his new country — a spot he didn’t surrender for the entire parade route. Not in my wildest dreams would I ever have thought about having a day like this, marching next to the prime minister or marching in a Pride,” he said. He arrived in Toronto May 26, almost three years after he left the home he’d

shared with his mother in Damascus, Syria, and just days before Toronto Mayor John Tory

proclaimed Pride Month at City Hall. He left Damascus after the aviation company he worked for decided it was too dangerous to continue operating in the city. At first he was happy to be away from the violence in Syria and he continued his work as a fuel co-ordinator in Egypt. But when the company refused to honour a pay agreement, Mcleash quit. In 2014, he was diagnosed with HIV, a difficult situation made worse by the fact that in Egypt, foreigners aren’t permitted to work if they’re HIV positive. So Mcleash was forced live on the margins of Egyptian society, getting paid under the table for translating for

foreigners and doing odd jobs. He depended on the kindness of a small LGBT group. One of the people in his circle was a well-connected scholar and activist, Scott Long, who put Mcleash in touch with Toronto’s Rainbow Railroad, an NGO that specializes in helping LGBT folks around the world escape persecution, imprisonment, torture and possible death. Mcleash was the first person approved for the organization’s new program to sponsor LGBT Syrians to come to Canada after the new Liberal government promised to bring in 25,000 Syrian refugees late last year. Five months after Rainbow Railroad offered to help him, Mcleash walked through security at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, a permanent resident of Canada. Unlike many LGBT Syrians, Mcleash has come out to his family and friends and is willing to speak publicly about being gay. He told his mother when he was in Egypt almost exactly a year ago. Never afraid to express support for the LGBT community on his Facebook profile, it was one post in particular that prompted his mother, who’s not an LGBT supporter, to ask questions.

Kenney calls for a united right in Alberta and announces his PC party leadership bid CALGARY — Conservative MP Jason Kenney says he wants to lead the Alberta Progressive Conservatives and unite voters on the right to stop the “accidental NDP government” in the next election. The former federal cabinet minister says it’s imperative that the Alberta Tories and Opposition Wildrose put past differences aside if they are to take back power from Rachel Notley’s New Democrats. Kenney spared no words in his attack on the NDP government that he says is “systematically destroying the Alberta advantage.” “There is only one way to eliminate that risk, only one way to ensure that we defeat the NDP in 2019 and get Alberta back on

the right track. And that is to unite Albertans around a common cause,” Kenney told supporters at his announcement in Calgary Wednesday. “The Progressive Conservatives and Wildrose parties must put Alberta first. We must focus on the future, not the past, on what unites us not what divides us. “We must come together to form a single, free-enterprise party and we must do so before the next election.” Kenney’s announcement that he will seek the Alberta Tory party’s top job is not unexpected. There had been speculation for months that he would return to his home province to try to broker a reconciliation between the more moderate PCs and the hard-line Wildrose.

Liberal government silent on pledge to let more homebuyers dip into their RRSPs It was an election promise that made headlines and got people excited. The Liberal Party pledged to make housing more affordable by widening the rules on who could raid their RRSPs to buy a home. “My first reaction was that that was fantastic news,” says Barrie, Ont., mortgage broker Darick Battaglia. But nine months after winning the election, Ottawa is silent on the pledge. And some experts predict it will continue to remain mum. They believe the Liberal government concluded it had no choice but to shut down an election promise that would only help further ignite Toronto and Vancouver’s already overheated housing markets. “It sounds great: let’s go help out homebuyers,” says broker Justin Blacklock with Averbach Mortgages in Vancouver. However, he believes that somewhere down the road, the government “freaked out about the market” and reconsidered its pledge. To help Canadians scrounge up a down payment, the party vowed to widen the rules so Canadians could dip into their RRSPs to buy a home if they had to move for work, suddenly became single or were taking in an elderly relative. Currently, only Canadians who qualify as first-time homebuyers or have a disability can cash out up to $25,000 of their RRSPs to buy a home. They generally have up to

15 years to pay it back with no interest or penalties. “The reality is that too many Canadians cannot afford to buy a house,” Justin Trudeau said at a Toronto campaign stop last year where he unveiled the expanded RRSP plan. But since coming to power, the Liberal government has said nothing more about it. Instead, it has tightened mortgage rules, making it harder for Canadians to buy homes over $500,000. Department of Finance did not respond for an update on the RRSP promise. Spokeswoman Annie Donolo responded in an email that the government has made “significant investments in affordable housing” and that it will continue to help families buying homes. When asked if this means there’s no plan, Donolo said she had nothing more to add. Carleton University business professor Ian Lee says the election promise was foolish considering Vancouver and Toronto home prices and Canadian debt levels are both getting out of control. Lee believes finance department officials must have told Minister Bill Morneau to nix an election pledge that would make it easier for more Canadians to buy houses. “I’m sure he didn’t get one single expert advisor saying, ‘Go for it.’ I’m sure every one of them said, ‘Run away from that promise as fast as you can.’”

Canadian auto sales on track for another record after strong June Canadian auto sales are on track to hit a fourth-consecutive annual record at the midpoint of the year as surging demand for light trucks continues to offset ebbing passengercar sales.

Dealers sold a record 191,088 vehicles in June, up 7.4 per cent from a year earlier, according to data compiled by DesRosiers Automotive Consultants Inc. Total sales are up six per cent year-todate, led by a 14.5 per cent increase in light truck sales, which include crossovers, SUVs and pickup trucks. Passenger-car sales, meanwhile, are down 6.8 per cent so far this year. “The Canadian auto market is halfway to another record year, sitting comfortably ahead of last year,” DesRosiers wrote in an analysis. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles continued to outsell its competitors with a 2.1 per cent increase. FCA Canada took the autosales crown for the first time last year and is leading the pack so far this year with 15.9 per cent of the market.

Perhaps most notably, the Dodge Grand Caravan minivan, which the company intended to phase out in favour of the new Chrysler Pacifica, saw its sales spike 43 per cent to a new June record. General Motors of Canada, meanwhile, saw sales jump 7.5 per cent in June, partially offsetting a 16.5 per cent slump in May as the company works to reduce its reliance on sales to rental fleets. “Our retail-focused strategy is driving our growth and our product lineup has never been stronger,” Jerry Daniel, general director of sales, service and marketing for GM Canada, said in a statement. Ford Canada’s June sales rose 7.2 per cent, led by a 40 per cent increase in F-Series pickup trucks, while Toyota Canada’s sales were up 6.4 per cent, setting an eighteenth straight record month for truck sales. Volkswagen, meanwhile, saw sales slump 21.2 per cent as the company continues to battle the negative publicity associated with its diesel emissions scandal. Analysts are predicting that Canadian auto sales will hit another record in 2016 despite some signs that demand is levelling off. May sales fell 1.6 per cent, the first decline since December 2015. “Despite (May’s) moderation, purchases remain on target to climb to annual records in Canada and seven provinces,” wrote Carlos Gomes, senior economist and auto industry specialist at Scotiabank, in a recent report. “As a result, the North American auto industry is scheduled to build a record number of vehicles in the July-September period.”

Punjabis obese, unhealthy, can’t care less Punjab is neither eating, nor living healthy. One-third of it is leading a sedentary life, twothird is obese and overweight, 41 per cent is suffering from hypertension and 87 per cent is taking more daily salt than prescribed. These are some of the startling findings from the maiden survey of NonCommunicable Disease (NCD) risk factors in Punjab, currently battling the cancer burden. Funded by the National Health Mission of Health Ministry, the study is the first of its kind for any state. Conducted by PGI in Chandigarh, Government Medical Colleges of Patiala, Amritsar and Faridkot

and Christian Medical College, Ludhiana, the 2014-15 study, spread over 15 months, covered every district. Six established NCD risk factors were studied in depth — low fruit and vegetable intake, low physical activity, obesity, high blood pressure, smoking and harmful alcohol use. The survey found 95.9 per cent of survey participants (numbering 5,127, aged 18 to 69 years) consuming less than five servings of fruits and vegetables a day and 32.5 per cent reporting less than the WHO recommended 150 minutes of activity per week.

Rs 1 lakh a day for Punjab CPSs’ fuel Taking the exchequer virtually for a ride, the fuel bill of Punjab’s 21 Chief Parliamentary Secretaries is a staggering Rs 1 lakh a day. According to the information obtained under the Right to Information Act, Punjab’s Transport Department paid Rs 4.66 crore in 18 months for the fuel bills of the 21 Chief Parliamentary Secretaries. The amount was paid between April, 2014, and October, 2015. Some of the CPSs spent Rs 2 lakh a month on fuel, which means the car they were using

He spent Rs 2 lakh a month on the fuel for the two cars provided to him by the government. He spent Rs 35 lakh on fuel in 18 months. He is followed by BJP MLA from Jalandhar (North) KD Bhandari, who spent Rs 33 lakh during the same period on his two cars. The Akali Dal MLA from Khem Karan, Virsa Singh Valtoha, spent Rs 29 lakh on one car. The CPSs who spent the lowest on fuel during that period included SAD MLA from Balluana Gurtej Singh Gharyana (Rs 8.89 lakh), SAD MLA from Balachaur Chaudhary Nand Lal (Rs 9.73 lakh) and SAD MLA from Gurdaspur Gurbachan Singh (Rs 13 lakh). When it comes to the limit of paying for the fuel bills of the CPSs, the state government has kept it open. It means they can be paid as much amount as they claim. “One can very well imagine what kind of financial burden the CPSs are putting on the state’s exchequer,” said Dinesh Chadda, RTI activist from Ropar who is also in charge of the RTI cell of AAP. In April, the government appointed six more CPSs, taking the total number of CPSs in the state to 24.

Private company rehired to issue drivers license

A private company contracted by Punjab in 2011 to issue the driver’s licence and vehicle registration certificate for five years was not only given a 33 per cent higher payout (Rs 19 crore), but was re-hired till 2021 in 2015 itself, a year-and-a-half before its contract was to end in September this year, an inquiry has revealed. Smart Chip got a contract renewal on the suggestion of a high-powered committee, according to another committee — comprising the Secretary, General Administration; Secretary, Transport and the Legal Remembrancer — that investigated why the company was given the contract again and that too much before the original term ended. The Transport Department has been asked to verify records and explain the reawarding of contract. The report has questioned how the company got a payout of Rs 79 crore for issuing driver licences and RCs though the contract specified a payout of Rs 60 crore (between September 2011, when it was hired, and September 2016). The report notes that the payout in such contracts could vary by 2-3 per cent, but here it was 33 per cent more. Officials, however, pointed out that the initial contract had a provision for giving extension in running the work of the Transport Department.

Government to set up SOP to help distressed women in NRI marriages The government will soon set up a committee to formulate a standard operating procedure (SOP) to be followed while dealing with cases of NRI men abandoning their wives, after the Women and Child Development Ministry received several such complaints. Women and Child Development (WCD) Minister Maneka Gandhi on Tuesday met External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and requested her to constitute a joint committee to develop an SOP. Gandhi tweeted “Met EAM @

SushmaSwaraj ji and discussed the issue of women in distress on account of NRI marriages. Have requested @ SushmaSwaraj ji to set up a joint group to develop a standard operating procedure to tackle the problems of these women...” “WCD will proactively work with Indian missions in foreign countries to resolve the situations that

Indian-origin trader found guilty of rate rigging in UK

An Indian-born trader is among three former Barclays bankers found guilty of rigging global benchmark interest rates known as Libor, between 2005 and 2007. Jay Merchant was convicted unanimously at the end of a 10week trial at Southwark Crown Court last week but reporting restrictions on the case were lifted only on Monday. The 45-year-old was found guilty alongside 35-year-old Jonathan Mathew and 38-yearold Alex Pabon and they will all be sentenced on Thursday. Merchant shook his head in disbelief while his elderly father looked stunned as the verdicts were read out last Wednesday,

the ‘Guardian’ reports. Libor rate stands for London inter-bank lending rate and is used by banks to set prices of financial products. It was designed to reflect the estimated rate at which banks could borrow funds from each other. The crucial rate forms the base for trillions of pounds worth of loans and financial contracts for households and companies across the world. Between 2005 and 2007, 16 banks, including Barclays, submitted daily estimates of borrowing rates to the British Banker’ Association, which used them to calculate Libor.

NRI tycoon’s Lulu group to invest Rs 7,000 crore in India

Buoyed by relaxation of FDI norms, NRI tycoon Yusuffali M A, who heads the Dubai-based retail conglomerate Lulu Group, has announced investment of over Rs 7,000 crore in India for setting up shopping malls and hotels. Ali said his group will invest Rs 4,650 crore in Kerala, Rs 1,000 crore in Uttar Pradesh and Rs 1,410 crore in Telangana in the hospitality and retail sector. Complimenting the NDA government for raising FDI cap for various key sectors, Ali estimated that investment to the tune of $150 billion will flow into India’s retail, aviation, tourism and manufacturing sectors from the

Gulf countries in the next few years. He said Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s outreach to a number of Gulf nations coupled with new initiatives to attract foreign investment have made India the most talked about FDI destination in the region eyeing a broadening of its non-oil investment. Ali’s Lulu Group, having an annual turnover of $6.3 billion, has already made major investments in retail, hospitality and food processing sectors in India. The Forbes magazine had last year listed Ali, a first generation migrant to the Middle East, as the 30th wealthiest Indian and the 737th richest in the world.

within a month’s time.” Once the SOP is prepared, it will be shared with various missions across the world, the official added. “We have received several such cases but we often found ourselves handicapped, even for as small a thing as serving summons to the perpetrator. So, we thought we will develop SOP so that Indian missions become proactively engaged in this issue. Once SOP is made, Indian missions will have the responsibility to more vigorously take up these cases.”

UK feared India-Pak nuclear war in 2001 The UK feared an India-Pakistan nuclear war in the wake of the terror attack on the Indian Parliament in 2001 and tried to “persuade and cajole” the two countries to pull back from a military confrontation, according to evidence presented to an inquiry into the 2003 Iraq war made public on Wednesday.

The then UK foreign secretary Jack Straw made the revelations during his depositions before the Chilcot Inquiry, which declared today that the Iraq invasion in 2003 had been based on “flawed intelligence”. In an attempt to highlight other pressing matters at the time, Straw said he had been preoccupied with the India-Pakistan issue on an “hour by hour” basis which formed the

grounds for his close relationship with his US counterpart at the time Colin Powell. In a memo to the inquiry committee dating back to January 2010 Straw said, “Immediately after 9/11 the foreign policy priority for the UK was Afghanistan. Towards the close of the year, following the terrorist attack on the Indian Parliament on December 13, 2001, the possibility – verging it appeared at times on the probability – of a military engagement between India and Pakistan became an added preoccupation for the UK government and the US. The attack on Parliament in New Delhi by LeT and JeM militants killed 9 people. “The joint US-UK endeavour to avoid such a serious regional conflict was the foundation of the very close working relationship which I developed with the US Secretary of State General Colin Powell,” he said. His testimony is backed up by his Foreign Office spokesperson and media adviser at the time, John Williams, who told the inquiry, “The Foreign Secretary was chiefly preoccupied with trying to persuade India and Pakistan back from the edge of a war that might easily have gone nuclear.”

Black money deadline may be extended The government may extend the deadline for payment of tax on black money disclosed during the one-time compliance window and has accepted the industry request for tax being paid in instalments. “The government is favourably considering to extend the tax payment deadline as it understands the liquidity crunch around November,” a top official said. “Discussions are on with regard to the number of months by which the payment

window can be extended. We have said that they can pay tax and penalty in instalments,” he said. The comments follow Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s meeting with industry associations, CAs and tax professionals late last month to understand their concerns around the compliance window. The Budget for 2016-17 announced a four-month compliance window, allowing domestic black money holders to declare their unaccounted wealth

Terror gravest threat to world: PM Prime Minister Narendra Modi today said terrorism was the “gravest threat” to the world as he made his first stop in Mozambique at the start of his four-nation tour of Africa. Modi’s comments assume significance coming in the backdrop of increasing terrorist activities around the world and most recently in India’s neighbourhood, Bangladesh. India also signed a significant “long-term” agreement with Mozambique for the import of pulses. For India, this will help it manage its domestic demand of pulses and provide Mozambique farmers an additional source of income. Since both India and Mozambique are also connected via the Indian Ocean, maritime security and further strengthening defence and security cooperation was also high on agenda.

The PM arrived in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique early today and was accorded a ceremonial welcome. Later, he held delegation-level talks with Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi after which the two leaders held a joint press statement. This is the PM’s first official visit to mainland Africa. The PM in his statement said, “President Nyusi and I recognise that terrorism is the gravest security threat facing the world today. Mozambique and India are no exceptions. Terrorism impacts India and Mozambique equally. The networks of terror are inter-linked with other trans-national crimes.” He said both nations had decided to strengthen the defence and security relationship and to advance it further.

Maharashtra govt orders probe into Zakir Naik’s speeches Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday asked the Mumbai Police chief to probe preacher Zakir Naik’s speeches and submit a report. Naik is in the midst of a controversy after his ‘hate speech’ was reported to have inspired one of the five Bangladeshi militants involved in the July 1 terror attack on an upscale cafe in Dhaka’s Gulshan suburb. As Mumbai-based Naik came under the scanner, senior Congress leader Digivjaya Singh was in the BJP’s line of fire after a 2012 video showing him share a dais with the 50-year-old televangelist praising him at an event to promote communal harmony surfaced today. Calling Islamic preacher Zakir Naek’s speeches “highly objectionable”, the Centre, earlier, said the Home Ministry will take appropriate action after studying them. Information and Broadcasting Minister M Venkaiah Naidu told reporters, “The Home Ministry will study (his speeches). It will take appropriate action after studying them. His speeches, as being reported in the media, are highly objectionable.” Meanwhile, after it came to light that he

had attended an event of Islamic preacher Zakir Naik in 2012, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Thursday said all provocative speeches by Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs and Christians should be banned. Digvijaya Singh said if the government of India or Bangladesh has any evidence against Naik’s involvement in the ISIS, they should take action against him. Issuing a clarification, Singh said he spoke against religious fundamentalism and terrorism in his speech at the conference organised by Zakir Naik, adding that he had also appealed for communal harmony. “The conference was for communal harmony and against terrorism. It was also to explain that Islam is against innocents being killed,” he added. The video shows Digvijaya Singh saying that people like Zakir Naik can bridge the gap between Hindus and Muslims. “Zakir should travel all over India…I am very happy that he is spreading the message of peace,” he said. “We need your message to reach the country,” Singh had told Zakir Naik back then.

Can’t evict farmers on mere expiry of tenancy, rules Supreme Court Farmers in Punjab and Haryana holding agricultural land on lease cannot be evicted merely because the fixed-term tenancy has expired, the Supreme Court ruled today. A three-member Bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi held that there was no legal provision to throw out these farmers as the eviction conditions laid down in the Punjab Security of Land Tenure Act 1953 and the Punjab Tenancy Act 1887 did not speak of tenants whose lease had expired. Earlier, the Supreme Court had delivered two conflicting judgments, one holding that eviction was possible and another to the contrary. Both the verdicts had been given by two-judge Benches. This necessitated the issue to be referred to a larger Bench. The three-member Bench, which included Justices Arun Mishra and Prafula C Pant, clarified in its judgment on July 5 that protection against eviction would be available only to those farmers deemed to be tenants under both the 1953 Act and the 1887 Act. “Statutory protection would be available only to a statutory tenant, namely a tenant under the 1953 Act. The Punjab Act of 1953, read with the relevant provisions of the 1887 Act, does not include a tenant whose lease has expired,” the SC explained. Such continuance, even after the expiry of the deemed period of the lease under Section 106 of the Transfer of Property Act

(TPA), would “clothe the occupant” with the status of a tenant under the 1953 Act. Section 116 of the TPA would confer legitimacy to possession by the tenant even after the termination/expiry of the deemed period of the lease to confer on him a status akin to that of a statutory tenant and, hence,

protection from eviction as envisaged in the 1953 Act, the Supreme Court said. The SC delivered the verdict on an appeal by Shyam Lal, a tenant aggrieved by an order of eviction upheld by the Punjab and Haryana High Court following expiry of the agricultural lease period. The Bench held that Shyam Lal had acquired the status of a “tenant holding over or a tenant at will”, which would confer on him protection under the 1953 Act, requiring the landlord to establish proof of any of the conditions specified in Section 9 of the 1953 Act before being entitled to a decree of eviction.

2016 Budget passed After intense debate, scrutiny and long sitting hours for four days, Parliament has passed the State’s $3.302 billion 2016-2017 National Budget. Economy Minister and AttorneyGeneral Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum moved the motion for a third reading of the 2016-2017 Appropriation Bill of 2016 (Bill No. 35 of 2016) be read a third time and passed. The budget, which pioneers the State’s new financial year, was passed by 31 votes while 14 MPs voted against the budget and five did not vote. Speaker Dr Jiko Luveni congratulated the MPs for their contribution to the important parliamentary process of passing the budget.

“A Bill for an Act to appropriate a sum of $3,302,212,765 for the ordinary services of Government for the financial year ending 31st July 2017 (Bill No. 35 of 2016) enacted by the Parliament of the Republic of Fiji,” Dr Luveni said. “Parliament has now passed the 2016-2017 budget, I congratulate all members for their contribution to this important process,” she said. Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama had earlier said the new budget was strong, fair, inclusive and one that included unprecedented consultation. Mr Bainimarama said the budget made a bold statement to the world of where Fiji stood today, and where it intended to go.

Missing Russian couple killed, police confirmed Police have confirmed that the remains found washed ashore at Natadola Beach in Sigatoka last week are that of a missing Russian couple. The confirmation just came in from Chief of Intelligence and Investigations, Assistant Commissioner of Police Luke Navela. “DNA tests conducted confirm the remains belong to the two. Investigations continue,” he said. Yuri Shipulin and his wife Natalia were reported missing to police in mid-June when they failed to return to their farm at Kachiquari in Mulomulo on the Nausori Highlands in Nadi.

Their business partner reported them missing and their vehicle registration PILOT was found on Natadola Beach Road a few days after their disappearance. As investigations continued into their disappearance, some body parts were found on the beach and a further search led to the discovery of more. Through the assistance of INTERPOL, the results of tests carried out in Fiji were sent abroad for DNA tests. With the assistance of the Fiji Navy, police will continue searching waters off Natadola Beach tomorrow for more body parts.

Hardware firms face scrutiny

Hardware outlets in the Western Division are taking advantage of people who have been affected by Tropical Cyclone Winston, claims National Federation Party parliamentarian Prem Singh. He made the comments while delivering his address on the 2016-2017 Appropriation Bill in Parliament this week. Mr Singh said employees from the 10 hardware companies selected to provide building materials to Help for Homes recipients were being duped and taken advantage of. “While there is law to punish people who make false declarations, there is nothing to address the suppliers of hardware materials,” he said. “What they do is they grab a person, swipe his card, if he has been allocated $7000 and they have no materials to supply. “What they do is, they keep it on hold. Right to Ba, Tavua, Rakiraki, there are numerous complaints and I urge the Prime Minister to look into this through his district officers and commissioners.” Government MPs interjected during Mr Singh’s speech, saying the issue had been addressed. However, he said, the issue was far from resolved. “It is four weeks now and the people have not been supplied with goods,” he said. “Their cards have been swiped and they are waiting in vain. “So, this is one thing that we must take seriously, it is the taxpayers’ money that we are assisting the home owners with and we must be accountable and the people who are taking advantage must be brought to justice.” Last week, former prime minister and National Farmers Union general secretary Mahendra Chaudhry raised similar concerns with the Parliament’s Standing Committee on Economic Affairs.

Pakistan ‘honour’ killings grow more brutal

Parveen Rafiq closed her hands around the neck of her youngest daughter, Zeenat, and squeezed and squeezed until the girl was almost dead. Then, in the tiny apartment where the family lived, she doused the 18-year-old with kerosene and set her on fire. Neighbours saw the smoke and rushed to the home. Someone inside, apparently one of Rafiq’s daughters-inlaw, was screaming, “Help her! Help!” But the door was bolted from within. Moments later, they heard Rafiq scream from her rooftop: “I have killed my daughter. I have saved my honour. She will never shame me again.” In this June 11, 2016 photo, Hassan Khan shows a tissue on which his wife Zeenat wrote a poem and messages to him, in Lahore, Pakistan.

US, India conspiring against Pakistan, says Hafiz Saeed at Eid prayers in Lahore

Zeenat’s crime was marrying a childhood friend she loved, defying her widowed mother’s pressure for an arranged marriage and, in the mind of her mother and many of her neighbours, tarnishing her family’s honour. Her macabre death on June 8 in the eastern city of Lahore was the latest in a series of increasingly gruesome “honour killings” in Pakistan, a country with one of the highest rates of such killings in the world. In one case, a mother slit the throat of her pregnant daughter who had married a man she loved. In yet another a jilted suitor doused a teenage girl with kerosene and set her on fire. In the city of Abbottabad, a teenage girl was tortured, injected with poison and then strapped to the seat of a vehicle, doused with gasoline and set on fire.

JuD chief and Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed on Wednesday led Eid-ul-Fitr prayers in the city where he sought to whip up hysteria, saying the US and India are signing agreements against Pakistan and there are preparations for a “big war”. Addressing a large gathering at the Gaddafi Stadium, the Lashkar-e-Taiba founder called for unity among Muslim community “to fail the design of infidels”. He said international players are conspiring against Pakistan’s nuclear programme. “The United States and India are signing agreements against Pakistan and there has been a preparation of a big war”, he said, alleging “drones are parked at Indian airports and our rulers are engaged in a fight with opposition.”

Saeed, on whose head the US has put a bounty of $10 million, termed Pakistan and Saudi Arabia’s growing distance with the US as a “blessing in disguise”. “It is a blessing in disguise that Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are getting distanced from America. This will lay foundation of the Islamic Union which is the need of the hour for the Islamic world,” he said. He condemned the terror attack in Saudi Arabia and alleged the involvement of “foreign hands” in destabilising the Muslim world. A large number of people offered their prayer behind Saeed amid tight security with police personnel and JuD security wing members deployed in and outside the stadium.

Top US senator meets General Raheel to mend strained bilateral ties

Pakistan and the US must strive for greater coordination for establishing peace in the region, a top American Senator said as he held talks with army chief General Raheel Sharif amid strains in bilateral ties over the scuttling of F-16 fighter jets deal and the US drone strikes. Senator John McCain, chairman of US Senate Arms Services committee, held a crucial overnight meeting with the army chief to “smoothen the frayed relations” between the two countries after the tension due to the

drone strike that killed Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour, officials said. McCain, accompanied by a congressional delegation including Senator Lindsey Graham and Senator Joe Donnelly arrived on Saturday evening, and held the meeting with General Raheel in Rawalpindi. The army, in a late Saturday night statement, said matters of mutual interest and regional security with particular reference to Afghanistan situation were discussed.

Bangladeshi dentist, singer and MBA student shown in latest Islamic State video The three Bangladeshi youths who appeared in the latest ISIS video threatening of more terror attacks around the world have been identified as a dentist, an aspiring singer and an MBA student, officials said here on Thursday. Model Naila Nayem’s former husband Tushar is one of the three youths who appeared in a so-called Islamic State video released on Wednesday, days after Islamist gunmen stormed a popular restaurant in Dhaka’s diplomatic enclave late on Friday and killed 22 people,

most of them foreigners from Italy, Japan, India and the US, officials said. Bangladesh army’s late Major Washikur Azad’s son Tushar (with longer beards in the video) married Nayem in 2011 but later they separated, bdnews24.com reported. A dentist by profession, Tushar was missing for around two years. He completed secondary education at Adamjee Cantonment Public School and higher secondary at RAJUK Uttara Model College. He lived in Dhaka, the report said.

Double bombings in Baghdad kill at least 120

At least 120 people were killed Sunday in two bombings in the Iraqi capital, including a large-scale attack in a central shopping district claimed by the group Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), officials said. The bombings demonstrated the extremists’ ability to mount significant attacks despite major battlefield losses, including the city of Fallujah, which was declared “fully liberated” from ISIS just over a week ago. The deadliest attack took place in the central Karada district of Baghdad, where a suicide bomber blew up his explosives-laded pickup truck outside a crowded shopping centre, killing at least 115 people and wounding up to 187 others. A police officer said the dead included 15 children, 10 women and six policemen. The suicide bomber struck shortly after midnight, when families and young people were out on the streets after breaking their daylight fast for the holy month of Ramadan. Most of the victims were inside a multi-storey shopping mall,

where dozens burned to death or suffocated, officials said. “It was like an earthquake,” said Karim Sami, a 35-yearold street vendor. “I wrapped up my goods and was heading home when I saw a fire ball with a thunderous bombing. I was so scared to go back and started to make phone calls to my friends, but none answered,” the father of three added. He said that one of his friends had been killed, another was wounded and one was still missing. Within hours, ISIS claimed responsibility for the bombing in a statement posted online, saying they had deliberately targeted Shia Muslims. The Associated Press could not verify the authenticity of the statement, but it was posted on a militant website commonly used by the extremists. At the scene, firefighters and civilians were seen carrying the dead away, their bodies wrapped in blankets and sheets. Smoke billowed from the shopping center, which was surrounded by the twisted and burned wreckage of cars and market stalls. A group of women were sitting on the pavement, crying for their loved ones. In the second attack, an improvised explosive device went off in Baghdad’s northern Shaab area, killing five people and wounding 16, another police officer said. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, but it bore the hallmarks of ISIS militants who often target commercial districts and Shiite areas. Medical officials confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to release information to the press.

Dhaka condemns eidgah terror attack as ‘anti-Islam, anti-government’

For quick results, please call:

As Dhaka reeled under another terror attack at the biggest Eid gathering in the country, Bangladesh government believes this is an attempt to destabilize the Sheikh Hasina government in the garb of Islamism. Hasanul Haq Inu, information minister, said, “These attackers are monsters in the garb of Islamism. This is a political move, aimed at toppling the Hasina government.” He said the security forces were largely successful in limiting the damage of the attack, though two police officers had died. “We have been able to capture three attackers, they are being interrogated now. This is a recurring pattern,” he said, denying the presence of transnational groups. “They are anti-Islam, anti-religion and antigovernment,” he said. While there was no immediate claim, it was no coincidence that the Sholakia Eidgah mosque near Kishoreganj, some 130km from Dhaka, was targeted. The imam who led the prayers, Maulana Fariduddin Masud, has been a vocal opponent of Islamist terror. Earlier this year, he led a fatwa campaign against militancy, which was signed by over one lakh clerics. His Eid congregation on Thursday was over three-lakh strong. Coming a week after the attack in a Dhaka cafe, which has been claimed by ISIS, Thursday’s attack has rattled Bangladesh, which has seen a string of targeted assassinations lately. In New Delhi, President Pranab Mukherjee condemned the attack saying, “I condemn the perpetrators of this attack in the strongest of terms. This is the second terrorist attack in a week occurring in Bangladesh.

For Sultan to become Salman Khan’s biggest hit, it has to break these records Sultan is likely to enter Rs 100 crore club after three days at box office. The Salman

Khan film made a killing at the box office on Day 2 and earned Rs 37.2 crore. That

Looks like Eid has brought in a lot of cheer for the Khan household

is a marginal increase from opening day BO that stood at Rs 36.5 crore. With Rs 73.7 crore already in its kitty, the Salman and Anushka Sharma film is comfortably cruising towards the Rs 100 crore target, which is likely to be reached on Friday. Trade is speculating that the film will do anything beyond Rs 150 crore during the first weekend, which is five-day long due to Eid on Thursday.

Amy Jackson sizzles in this picture from a photoshoot Currently on a work trip to hometown London, Amy Jackson seems to be making the most of her time there. On June 25, hitlist had reported about the actress featuring in a music video by Grammy-nominated rock band Wolf Alice. Now, we have stumbled on details of her new project — Amy will shoot three episodes for a travel blog. Says a source, “Amy’s friend has started a travel blog and wanted her on board for the first three episodes. Not only did Amy agree to do it, she also shared a few inputs. She wanted London to be the first city they shot in, given that she was born and brought up there.” The Brit beauty will then move on to Ibiza, which is, incidentally, her favourite holiday destination, and Greece. Adds the source, “When her friend asked her to help out with the blog and shared the concept with her, she was more than happy to shoot for it. She is doing it for free because she wanted to help her friend and was excited about the venture too.” Amy confirms the story and says, “I love my girls and I am all for supporting them in whatever way I can. I also love travelling and living out of a suitcase, so this is perfect. Having this opportunity and sharing it with other adventure junkies makes it all the more exciting.”

Arbaaz-Malaika, Sohail-Seema walk in together at Salman’s Eid celebration

2 days after Arbaaz Khan and Malaika Arora were spotted dining together at a suburban joint, the couple made an entry together at Galaxy Apartments in Bandra this morning for Salman Khan’s Eid celebrations. Their son Arhaan too was with them. This is indeed a positive step for the couple, who has been living under separate roofs since January The other Khan bahu too followed Malaika’s footsteps. Seema Khan, whose marriage to Sohail Khan was going through its share of troubles, painted a happy picture as they made a joint appearance with their son Nirvaan. Since the beginning of this year, the Khan-daan has been fraught with tension – there has been constant news of Arbaaz-Malaika and SohailSeema’s marriage heading downhill. Malaika walked out of the family house in January this year, amidst reports that she was dating a UK

businessman. The Chhaiyya Chhaiyya girl even met divorce lawyer to initiate divorce proceedings The Khan-daan constantly tried to patch up Arbaaz and Malaika, with even Salman Khan advising her against divorce but the pleas fell on deaf ears As for Sohail and Seema, the Jai Ho director walked out of the house he shared with his wife in March. It was then rumoured that Huma Qureshi was the cause of the rift between the couple. The presence of the two bahus at the Eid celebration leads one to wonder if the couples are finally on the road to reconciliation. Arpita Khan even shared an image where everyone posed together as one big, happy family including the newest family member – Ahil.

This is the first film Shah Rukh Khan ever saw!

Reminiscing the good old days spent with his family during Eid, Shah Rukh Khan said that his fondest memories associated with the festival were those of his childhood days. He recalled, “I remember going for namaaz on a two-wheeler with my uncle, I remember several delicacies being cooked at home, I remember meeting and greeting relatives and friends. Most of the time was spent praying, post which we used to visit relatives or they used to come down to our place.” The actor added that whenever the question about his most memorable Eid cropped up, he thinks it is always the next one. “Maybe I have grown so old that I don’t remember which has been the most special! What I really miss at these times are my parents and my sister. I don’t know all the rituals of Eid well, and all my family members look up to me to follow the customs. So, I

really miss all those whom I lost at an early age.” While the actor said it is for his kids to judge him as a parent, he also admitted that he is an easy-going parent and the kids feel free to discuss and share anything, anytime with him. But SRK does not like to intrude into the personal space of his daughter, Suhana. He said, “Although she’s close to me, I give her the space she requires. In my saddest moments, I am with her.” When quizzed about the first movie he had ever seen, the actor said it is Dev Anand-starrer ‘Joshila’ directed by Yash Chopra. “That’s how my mom treated me when I scored 10/10 in Hindi.” While SRK gears up for the release of ‘Dear Zindagi’ along with Alia Bhatt in November 2016, he still awaits a perfect release date of Rahul Dholakia’s ‘Raees’. As per reports, the crime-drama was set to hit the silver screen along with Salman Khan-starrer Sultan, but he along with the makers of the film pushed the date of Raees to January 2017. Now, we hear that Hrithik Roshan- starrer Kaabil has also fixed a same day release as of Raees. SRK is in talks with the makers of Kaabil to push the release date further in order to avoid the clash of two big films. SRK said, “Both the movies will suffer if they are released on the same day. In order to avoid such a situation we are trying to find a middle ground and talk to the makers of Kaabil to avert any kind of clash.” Apart from movies, all SRK fans eagerly await the launch of his autobiography titled ‘Twenty Years In A Decade’. While the actor has been working on the book for long, he finds it difficult to take time out from his busy schedule and devote it entirely on finishing the book. He said, “I am still writing the book and want to complete it soon; I shall resume writing before my next shoot begins.”

‘A Flying Jatt’ teaser: Superhero Tiger Shroff takes on baddie Nathan Jones

Tiger Shroff is all set to essay the role of a superhero in his next, ‘Flying Jatt’ and director Remo D’Souza is keen that the actor’s look in the film is at par with Hollywood superheroes. The makers have sourced a special costume from Las Vegas that cost Rs 20 lakh. Says a source, “All superheroes are identified by their costumes. We had various meetings to discuss Tiger’s look. We initially tried sourcing costumes from designers in India, but that didn’t work. So we finally decided to get it made from the studio which fashioned costumes of Spiderman and Superman.” Apparently, the production team has appointed a guard to keep vigil outside the costume room. A unit hand says, “It was difficult to get the perfect ensemble. Remo and Tiger flew to Las Vegas to finalise the outfit. After checking out 11 costumes, they picked one. It’s a unique look and the production team has been asked to keep it under wraps until the official release.” Remo confirms the story and says, “Getting the right superhero costume is as challenging as writing a superhero film. The look has to stand for the superhero’s ideals and attitude besides being young and cool.”

Bollywood HOROSCOPE Aries

March 21 - April 20 Your stars indicate a massive personal and professional turnaround. In terms of family affairs, parents seem to be more important than children. At the very least, you must observe the dictates of authority and tradition!

Taurus

April 21 - May 20 It looks as if Taureans will divide into two groups. On one hand, there’ll be those smitten with a desire to leave home in search of adventure. On the other, will be a group who embarks on a quest for spirituality. What links the two is a conviction that the world could, indeed must, become a better place.

Gemini

May 20 - June 21 Joint financial arrangements loom large, and anything which occurs this week will require attention – don’t delay any more than is necessary. At the heart of your current mood lies the feeling that you may have been undervalued in the past, and that you should now be paid the respect you are due.

Cancer

June 22 - July 23

The key to successful personal relationships is to participate in all social gatherings as much as possible but, at the same time, to retain a certain sense of detachment. That way you’ll be less likely to be taken in by unrealistic promises, or to be dismayed by those who get upset without reason.

Leo

June 24 - August 23 You may well be concerned by the number of chores, duties and obligations which seem to be rolling in your direction. It does look as if you’ll now have the chance to abandon your commitments, but never do so without considering the consequences.

Virgo

August 24 - Sept 24 If you have never had a reputation as a party-goer, now is the moment to acquire one. Many people say that this is a time for children, so have you considered what fun it would be to revert to childhood and have a good time?

Libra

Sept. 24 - Oct 22 As fate would have it, this is one of those periods when you are liable to face last-minute family emergencies. The best astrological advice is to remain cool, calm and collected and take nothing for granted. The better you manage your affairs now, the less the chance of your losing control.

Scorpio

Oct 23 - Nov 22 If you’re travelling this week there’s one golden rule: check, check and check again. Make sure you have everything you need, confirm all directions and see to it that all arrangements are understood by everyone concerned.

Sagitarius Nov 23 - Dec 22

Now is the time to pay special attention to anyone who feels that they have been ignored.. Such feelings may exist only in their imagination, but that makes them no less concerning. You should also be aware that financial generosity could be one of the best ways of oiling your emotional wheels!

Capricorn Dec 23 - Jan 20

A powerful and harmonious Sun-Moon alignment will be seen as a moment to inaugurate a series of new cycles, mainly personal ones. It is also, as luck would have it, an excellent time for making a fresh start in a number of family relationships: please lay the upsets and regrets of the past to one side.

Aquarius

Jan 21 - Feb 19 Venus’ celestial marriage with Uranus is a classic indicator of new emotional commitments. It reveals that this is an extraordinarily suitable period for making discreet declarations of love. As far as work is concerned, you should be thinking of a new collaboration once business picks up again.

Eid Mubarak! Here’s how Bollywood and TV celebs enjoyed the festivities Dressed in a comfortable pair of jeans and white shirt, Aamir Khan was in his element as he greeted the media on the occasion of Eid on Thursday. Talking about celebrating the festival, the actor said, “I always spend the day with my family on Eid. As a kid, I would wait for my Eidi, but now it’s my turn to give Eidi. This year, Kiran and Azad are in Europe and, unfortunately, I will have to celebrate Eid without them.” Aamir also added that he makes it a point to give Azad only Rs 2 as Eidi so that he learns the value of money. Ask him if he liked his good friend Salman Khan’s recently released film ‘Sultan’, and he quips, “I loved the film and got emotional while seeing it. I think the film will break PK’s record.” Aamir’s nephew Imran Khan with wife Avantika were also spotted soaking in the spirit of the festival and posed for shutterbugs. The Badshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan, had a fun-filled Eid and began his day with waving out to thousands of fans who had gathered outside Mannat. He was accompanied by his son AbRam, who as usual, had all eyes on him with his antics. He then headed to speak to the media and reminisced of Eid celebrations from the past. The actor confessed that AbRam was excited during the celebrations. “He came to me in the morning, and said ‘bachchas’ have come. He took my hand and took me to balcony,” SRK said, referring to the crowd gathered outside. SRK also spoke about going to Salman’s home for celebrations. “We are waiting for food from Salman’s home as there are more delicacies prepared there,” he said. As for Salman’s fans, they had to settle for

just a glimpse of the actor. He came out to his balcony at 7.30 pm for a minute and waved. Sallu was accompanied by his father, Salim Khan and bodyguard, Shera. And here’s what small screen celebrities were up to Mohammad Nazim I celebrated Eid in my hometown Markotla. I met my friends after long and had a lot of fun. This is something I don’t get to do in Mumbai. Throughout the day, there were visitors coming over. I had a blast; there’s nothing like being at home on this special occasion. I wasn’t dieting for a change, and binged on Eid delicacies like chhole puri and sevaiyan among other favourites. Dipika kakkar For the last 30 days we had Iftari on set, the last one being a grand one. We called for pizza and burgers. Our whole unit waits for the last Iftari. I took an off from work yesterday and invited a lot of people home. Shoaib’s [boyfriend] mom shared the menu and I cooked several dishes. Ammi [Shoaib’s mom] also cooked certain delicacies, so it was a joint effort and very special. Aamir Ali I went to the mosque in the morning for prayers, came back and took my mom’s blessings. We then held celebrations at Sanjeeda’s place in the evening along with her entire family. Post which we had a fun-filled time with some friends. Adaa Khan I offered prayers, made sheer korma and left for a shoot, which went on till 3 am. My elder brother is expected from Dubai with my nephews today, so that would make an ideal Eid celebration for me.

Movie Review

SULTAN - Movie Review

YES, we know he recently upset everyone with his I-don’t-care-I-am-Salman-and-I-can-sayanything attitude, when he compared his gruelling training sessions for the just-released ‘Sultan’ to feeling like a “raped woman”. But like a senior journalist sitting beside us at the screening said, “He apologised right away. ‘I didn’t mean it and nobody bothered to quote that,’ Salman argued. Salman was saying, quote me, but quote me in full.” Well, whichever side of the Salman rape row you are on, one thing is clear — he knows how to deliver a box-office hit. Ali Abbas Zafar and producers YRF have cast ‘Sultan’ in the Bajrangi Bhaijaan mould. It’s a big movie with the right dose of masala. A wrestler tries to win over the woman he loves, and her respect, but he misses a step when he lets arrogance get the better of him. Then, middle-aged, he makes a dramatic comeback like only true sportspersons can. Salman is not Salman, but Sultan, in this film. And that’s a rare feat. Think Shah Rukh in ‘Chak De!’. He is controlled in his acting, but plays the charming Romeo when he needs to, before transforming into a stoic man on a mission. He’s an actor and not a star in this one. Anushka Sharma as Aarfa, the female wrestler who inspires Sultan, is flawless as she is often. It’s her practical, don’t-mess-with-me acting that makes her a delight to watch. A special mention for Anant Sharma, who plays Govind, Sultan’s best friend and sidekick. He appears in almost every frame, providing the laughs and helping subtly build the emotional trajectory. Randeep Hooda is brooding and steamy as Sultan’s coach while Amit

‘Sultan’ U/A; Drama-Romance Director: Ali Abbas Zafar Cast: Salman Khan, Anushka Sharma, Randeep Hooda, Amit Sadh, Anant Sharma Sadh is someone you can easily relate to as the owner of a pro-wrestling league. But it’s also the sport itself that’s a scene-stealer. You see Haryana in its rustic vigour; the cast speaks Haryanvi with ease without making the dialect grate on your nerves.

It’s one more attempt at saying, sports other than cricket exist in this country, and wrestling is one that’s attached to India’s soil. The camerawork is slick and the direction graceful. The music by Vishal-Shekhar is foot-tapping (‘Baby Ko Bass Pasand Hai’ and ‘440 watts’) and compliments the screenplay. But we think at one point we heard the Game of Thrones theme as is! ‘Sultan’ is a fun watch, offering the perfect fix to lift a not-so-great day. It’s about love and the will to do anything that comes with protecting it. It’s also about bringing yourself back from the dead, and saying, ‘I am not going anywhere’ — something that Sultan and Salman Khan, the man, have in common, despite their disparate destinies. The ‘public’ is going to lap this one up. Eid Mubarak.

Dates swapped An online leak forced Great Grand Masti makers to advance the film’s release by a week, bringing it in direct competition with Irrfan’s Madaari at the box office on July 15. But now, Irrfan has grabbed the June 22 date vacated by the adult comedy. “It took us a while to decide about changing the date, but in the end, we have to survive in the industry as a team; harmony will be beneficial for everyone. I wish the team of

Irrfan GGM all the best. I am sorry the wait for our film got a little longer,” the first-time producer says.

Literally shining! Yesterday once more Neetu Kapoor wished hubby Rishi Kapoor and son Ranbir on Eid in a rather unique way. The veteran actress took to social media and posted parallel pictures of the two

men in her life holding a mirror for her. While Rishi’s snap is from the 1977 action-comedy Amar Akbar Anthony, Ranbir’s seemed more of a candid shot. Cute.

Trust the evergreen Jhakaas actor Anil Kapoor to shine in the most age-inappropriate outfit. The veteran star unveiled the first look of his character in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Fanney Khan on social media in which he is seen dressed in a shiny golden outfit with a mike in hand and his back to the camera. The film is the Hindi remake of the 2000 Oscar-nominated Dutch movie, Everybody’s Famous. Kapoor tweeted, “This #Eid, we begin a new transformation...#FanneyKhan & I embark on an exciting journey today!”. In the film, Kapoor plays a controlling dad who wants to realise his unfulfilled dream of becoming a singer through his daughter.

Singer Mika booked for molesting aspiring model But He Accuses Complainant Of Extortion While an aspiring model filed a molestation complaint against Mika Singh at the Versova police station on Tuesday , the singer, on the same day , submitted an application to the cops stating that she was trying to extort money from him. The police said they will conduct a preliminary probe into the model's complaint against Singh under IPC sections 354 (assault a woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace). According to the model's complaint, she knew Singh for the past five years and often visited his Andheri (W) residence. She claimed that he had promised to get her modelling assignments and eventually a film role. But when he failed to fulfil his promises, she decided to confront him. Early on Tuesday , she went to Singh's home to ask him why he wasn't helping her. “An altercation broke out between the two. The model claimed he grabbed her by the hair and pushed her around and also assaulted her,“ a police officer said, adding she filed the complaint the next day . But in a statement through his lawyer, Singh said, “Around 5am on Tuesday ,a girl entered my premises through the window. She started abusing me and assaulting my staff. She threatened that if I did not pay her Rs 5 crore, she would ruin my career and register a false complaint against me. I have already informed the Versova police in writing regar ding the threat. I do not know who this girl is. I have evidence against her demanding money from me. The police are investigating the matter and the truth will come out soon.“ Singh also claimed that the woman was harassing him through text messages and urged tthe police to book her for issuing threats and extortion. The police will check CCTV footage of Singh's building as there were no witnesses to the incident. “We will make inquiries with Singh and check if his flat is under electronic surveillance. Inquiries will also be made with the building security,“ the officer added.

Exclusive

These pictures prove Abu Salem’s enjoying life with wife A set of exclusive photographs in Asian Star ’s possession show how under-trial gangster Abu Salem has been meeting the woman he has sought court permission to marry on train journeys to Lucknow and Delhi for various trials. The photographs show Salem with not only Sayyed Bahaar Kausar, 26, but also several family members. On one occasion he is seen talking on a cell phone at a railway station waiting room. Salem, currently lodged in the Taloja Jail, has been travelling to Lucknow and Delhi for the hearing of his cases that are on trial. The photographs were taken between 2012 and 2015. Qubool hai Last June, Kausar had filed an application in court seeking permission to marry Salem. She had said newspaper reports in 2014 that claimed she had married Salem had “ruined her life”. She had claimed that the situation had left her “ineligible” for marriage and marrying the gangster was her only way out. These photos, however, call the couple’s bluff. November 2013: Soon after Abu Salem was convicted to seven years imprisonment in a fake passport case November 2013: Soon after Abu Salem was convicted to seven years imprisonment in a fake passport case A week later, Salem had replied, accepting her proposal. He had told the court that he appreciated the “bold stand” taken by the woman. Apologising for the situation “he had

inadvertently put her” in, he had said he would like to marry her “so that the woman can freely move around and be able to meet and answer all relatives, friends and well-wishers’ [questions] with her head held high in society.” The special TADA court judge had said the application would be considered at

the final stage of the 1993 blast case trial. The court is currently hearing the final arguments in the trial. February 2014: The couple sharing a meal immediately after getting married on a train to Uttar Pradesh Sources close to the woman’s family reveal that the first meeting of Kausar, a wannabe actress, and Salem was in jail. Salem promised to give her a break in Bollywood through his contacts,

following which their meetings grew more frequent. It was during this period that the two apparently fell in love. Kausar continues to meet Salem during his court hearings. February 2014: The couple sharing a meal immediately after getting married on a train to Uttar Pradesh Reports in 2014 said Salem married Kausar in a running train in February that year in the presence of relatives and a police escort team. (The photograph in which the couple is seen sharing a meal was apparently taken immediately after the wedding.) Abu Salem chats on a mobile phone at the waiting room of the Lucknow railway station while under police scrutiny Abu Salem chats on a mobile phone at the waiting room of the Lucknow railway station while under police scrutiny Another photo paints a rather disturbing picture: that Salem’s escort team had given him access to a mobile phone during one of his trips. In one photograph, Salem is seen talking on a phone while inside the waiting room of the Lucknow railway station. As per procedure, when Taloja Jail officials need to produce an under-trial prisoner in a court outside the state, they write to the Local Arms unit, which provides the escorts. Sadanand Gaikwad, superintendent of the Taloja Jail said, “As per the procedure, we send a letter to the Local Arms Unit to escort the accused with conditions that no family member, friend or relative be allowed to meet him while he is being transported. We also ask the escort team to restrict the undertrial from eating any outside food. We instruct the Local Arms Unit to provide a strong escort team.” Dilip Sawant, DCP, crime branch, Navi Mumbai, said he will comment on any lapse in security only after seeing the photographs for himself.

PAV BHAJI Mumbai’s famous street food, a favorite chaat of my family and my kind of comfort food – Pav Bhaji. Pav = Bun and Bhaji = a mashed mixed Vegetable curry prepared with Pav Bhaji Masala. The key to a good Pav Bhaji lies in the quality of bread and the masala that goes into the making of the spicy bhaji. I enjoy preparing street food fare at home. It’s comforting and unpretentiously rooted in Indian culinary tradition. Today, I’m blogging Mumbai’s famous street food, my kind of comfort food – Pav Bhaji. Pav = Soft Bun and Bhaji = a mashed mixed vegetable curry prepared with Pav Bhaji Masala. The key to a good Pav Bhaji lies in the quality of bread and the masala that goes into the making of the spicy bhaji. Makes for a filling evening meal. The bhaji makes optimum use of Mother Nature’s bountiful supply of fresh vegetables. Not less than 7-8 variety of vegetables go into its making. Now that sure makes it nutrient rich, doesn’t it? :) Prep & Cooking: 50-60 mts Serves 7-8 persons Ingredients: 1 large carrot, cubed 2 potatoes, cubed 1 capsicum, chopped 1 cup cauliflower florets, chop 8-10 french beans, string and chop 1/4 cup green peas 2 onions, finely chopped 2 green chillis, slit length wise 1 tsp ginger-garlic paste 1/4 tsp turmeric pwd

1/2 tsp red chilli pwd 1 1/2 tbsps Pav Bhaji Masala 3/4 tsp sugar (adjust) salt to taste 2 tomatoes, finely chopped 1 tbsp lemon juice 1 tbsp low fat butter (vegans can avoid butter) fresh coriander leaves for garnish 1 1/2 tbsps oil 16 lightly toasted in butter, pav bread Procedure: 1 Pressure cook potatoes, cauliflower, peas, beans and carrot along with 1 cup of water, till soft. Drain any left over water and keep aside. Mash all the cooked vegetables using a masher. 2 Heat oil in a vessel, add the green chillis and onions and saute for 4 mts. Add the gingergarlic paste and saute for another 3 mts. Add capsicum and saute for 2 mts. 3 Add the chilli pwd, turmeric pwd, pav

bhaji masala, sugar and salt. Combine well. Add the tomatoes and cook until soft, approx 5-6 mts. 4 Add the mashed vegetables along with a cup of the drained vegetable stock and cook on high for a mt. Reduce flame and simmer for 14-15 mts.

and lemon juice and combine. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves. 6 Serve hot with lightly toasted pav/pau and sliced onions.

5 The gravy will begin to thicken. Adjust the salt, if required. Turn off heat and add butter

Note: You can use 2-3 vegetables also while preparing the bhaji. I have not used cabbage and beetroot since I did not have them on hand at the time of preparation. Using beetroot will lend a deep reddish purple color to the bhaji.

Giving love another chance ‘Children BEN Affleck and Jennifer Garner are “still figuring things out”, a year after they announced they were splitting. The two are reportedly still unsure whether they should file for divorce as they are focused on doing the right thing by their kids, Violet, 10, Seraphina, seven, and four-year-old Samuel. A source said: “They’re still figuring things out. Ben still doesn’t want the divorce and he might actually get his way. She had the best time in Europe with Ben and the kids. She seemed much happier when she returned to L.A. Jen went from being very adamant that a divorce would happen to instead avoiding any divorce talk.” And the ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ star and the ‘13 Going On 30’ actress are adamant they don’t want to rush things. An insider added: “There is no rush to file [for divorce]. They are enjoying life where they are right now ...Nothing has changed [in their relationship]. They’re still all about putting the kids first.”

are crazy’ MILA Kunis, who is preparing to welcome her second child with actor Ashton Kutcher, says she has discovered that “children are f**king crazy”. In an interview with a magazine, the actress reflected on her first pregnancy with the couple’s daughter, Wyatt Isabelle, born in October 2014. “An important thing to learn is that kids have a personality that has nothing to do with you. I have a really sweet daughter. She wants to hug all the other kids. I didn’t teach her to be sweet. It has nothing to do with me. I have realised you can control only so much,” she said. The 32-year-old actress has also learned a lot about her husband in their years together, including the look on his face when he is not telling her the truth. “We can’t bulls**t each other. I literally can’t lie to him. He can call me out on everything, and I can do the same, because there is nothing about the other person’s face that we don’t know,” Kunis explained.

Gwen Stefani drops husband’s name

Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale

GWEN Stefani has dropped “Rossdale” from her last name in the wake of her divorce from Gavin Rossdale. A judge approved the Hollaback Girl hitmaker’s request to change it to her maiden name Gwen Renee Stefani. Although Gwen has always gone by the same stage name, she legally changed her last name after getting married to Gavin in 2002. The songstress filed for divorce from the musician in August 2015. They reached a divorce settlement in April. In an interview with a magazine some time ago,

Gwen had opened up about her split from Gavin. “My dreams were shattered. All I wanted my whole life was to have babies, be married, like what my parents have. It was so insane because not only did my family break up, but my kids are taken away like half the time, so that was really like, ‘What?! What did I do?’ ” “Of course you go through the ‘Why me?’ and feel sorry for yourself. But then I was like, ‘No, this happened to me already and I made something good out of it,’ and that was Tragic Kingdom,” she added.

Jones welcomes new baby A big congratulations is in order for Norah Jones. A website confirmed that the singer, daughter of the late musician Ravi Shankar, gave birth to her second child. Jones is already mother to a baby boy, who she secretly welcomed into the world in February 2014 with her partner, a musician who she has refrained

from naming in interviews. Though she’s always remained silent about her private life, she brought the child with her to an event for military mothers at the White House a few months after giving birth. Jones and her partner were also spotted walking through a Los Angeles airport in late 2014 with their child. — AGENCIES

Jim Carrey speaks out after Cathriona White’s autopsy report

Hollywood funnyman Jim Carrey thinks it is a “shame” that details of his ex-girlfriend Cathriona White’s autopsy report was made public. The “Mask” actor was left devastated when Cathriona was found dead at her home in Los Angeles in September 2015 and earlier this week her passing was ruled a suicide, with a report from the LA County Coroner”’s office stating her death was caused by “multiple drugs effect”. And Carrey, 54, has now spoken out for the first time following the release of the autopsy report, reported People magazine. “When I came to Hollywood to make it as a comedian, I soon learned that the details of my private life would be handed out to the media like free dinner vouchers. I never dreamed that the people I love most in the world would also be on the menu. What a shame,” Carrey said. According to reports, Cathriona had taken a mix of prescription drugs including Zofran, Propranol, Percocet and Ambien and Carrey had texted her the night before she died asking if she knew where missing painkillers prescribed to him went. Three of the prescriptions found at her house were under the pseudonym “Arthur King”, and the coroner’s report stated: “Given this, it appears likely that the bottles for ‘Arthur King’ found on (White’s) bedside table were the prescriptions he was referring to.” The report stated that Cathriona became upset after splitting up with Carrey three days before her death. She left two notes; one with instructions to have her belongings sold with the proceeds going to her family and another more personal one to Carrey about their relationship, which included the line - “Please forgive me. I’m just not for this world.”

Across B.C., out of just over 10,000 transactions worth a staggering $7.6 billion during these three weeks, about three per cent of the sales, worth $390 million, were by foreign nationals. B.C. Finance Minister Mike de Jong, who announced the information Thursday, cautioned that the information is based on sales for just under three weeks and the sample loosely represents about 10 per cent of projected total home sales for 2016. He acknowledged June 30 is a day when a significant number of home sales would have closed, but didn’t fully explain why the government chose not to wait and include it. “What do people take from this (new data) with all the limitations and caveats I’ve attached?,” asked de Jong. “We know with certainty there are foreign nationals from countries around the world purchasing residential properties in B.C. Affordable Housing for People in Need Underway in Saanich

Vol. 6 No. 31

VICTORIA, BRITISH COLUMBIA-(Marketwired - June 28, 2016) - Seniors and other individuals who have experienced homelessness, or at risk for homelessness, will soon have increased options for affordable rental housing in Saanich, including vital supports in an environment that also meets social needs. Construction is underway at Cottage Grove which will provide 45 safe and comfortable homes for at risk individuals including seniors and help meet the need for affordable housing in the community.

Located at 3207 Quadra St., the building will be operated and managed by the Victoria Cool Aid Society. While operational funding is still being determined, the plan is to offer residents a variety of support services such as medication monitoring and life skills programs. Residents will also be connected to mental health and addictions services. The building will also include a resident lounge, dining area and communal laundry area. The central location along the Quadra Street Corridor will allow for easy access to public transportation and community services.

Construction is expected to be complete by early 2017. Quick Facts: • The Governments of Canada and B.C. will provide a combined investment of approximately $6 million under the Canada-B.C. Investment in Affordable Housing Agreement. • The Capital Regional District’s Regional Housing Trust Fund will provide $675,000 towards the project. • The City of Victoria and District of Saanich will each provide $112,000. Quotes: Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development and Minister Responsible for Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation - “The peace of mind that comes with having a secure and stable home is invaluable. This is why our Government is glad to be involved in the creation of these 45 new units which will provide at-risk individuals including seniors in Saanich with affordable and quality housing while supporting the local economy.” Rich Coleman, Minister of Natural Gas Development and Minister Responsible for Housing - “Addressing housing and homelessness in the province is a collective responsibility. Partnerships such as this are essential to successfully create housing options for singles, families, seniors and other British Columbians in need.” Mayor Richard Atwell, District of Saanich

he $240-million Credit Suisse/ SwissReal tower in the heart of downtown Vancouver will be completed in less than a year, but so far, only one tenant has signed up to move in. The tenant has committed for a 10th of the 370,000 square feet – leaving a state of emptiness that is unusual for an office skyscraper in this city. Even so, a huge shift in business tenancy is expected as the region experiences something it has not seen before: an office-tower building boom much of which is speculative construction rather than for specific committed tenants. “This is kind of uncharted territory for Vancouver,” said Mehdi Shokri, a principal with the capital markets team at Avison Young. “But I don’t see a big disaster occurring.” The Credit Suisse tower is only the most visible and furthest along of a second wave of new office towers planned for Vancouver and some key suburbs. A first cluster of towers – some two million square feet – was built downtown in the past three years. Another 11 office developments are proposed within blocks of Credit Suisse’s Exchange tower at Howe and West Pender streets, even while the office-vacancy rate in the region continues to inch up as a result of the first wave of building. But commercial brokers say the city is not about to be populated by ghost towers.

Mr. Shokri and others say they expect many of the new towers to start signing tenant leases as they get closer to completion. That is partly because companies in Vancouver, which do want to be in new, energy-efficient buildings, tend to operate on short timelines. As well, he said, prices in the new buildings will likely come 4 i Saturday, July 25, 2015down in the

next two years due to competition. The landlords who will likely suffer as a result of the current boom are owners of older buildings, Mr. Shokri said. As well, new developments in the suburbs, which have already experienced higher vacancy rates in recent years, may have trouble as they compete with each other. In Vancouver, the co-developer of the Cred-

- “I’m thrilled to see this partnership move forward. We have vulnerable citizens in the district, and addressing housing options in

conjunction with community support is key to ensuring their needs are met with dignity and respect.” Barbara Desjardins, Chair, Capital Regional District - “The CRD is pleased to support this excellent project. With backing provided by the federal and provincial governments and contributions from partners, we’re able to have a significant impact in creating housing options for vulnerable populations in the region.” Kathy Stinson, CEO, Victoria Cool Aid Society - “The construction of Cottage Grove is well underway, and another step further in our efforts to end homelessness in the Capital Region. Supportive housing apartment buildings such as this, especially in such a central location on a major transit route, are integral to our efforts to find solutions in all communities to help adults experiencing marginalization.”

Vancouver Real Estate May Already Be Crashing: Stats David LePoidevin admits he’s been wrong about Vancouver real estate in the past. But now, the West Coast-based fund manager finds himself standing with a growing chorus of observers offering grim portents for the future of Canada’s hottest housing market. He thinks a crash may be happening already. And there are numbers to back him up. LePoidevin manages over $1 billion in assets as part of his own fund, the LePoidevin Group. And he has courted

investors by advertising that he’s not exposed to Vancouver’s housing market. He has no money invested in Canadian banks (he fears a housing decline could drag them down). But he’s shorting both Canadian Western Bank and Laurentian Bank, as well as non-bank mortgage lenders Home Capital Group (HCG) and Equitable Bank. Three years ago he pitched his fund to potential clients by inviting Ben Rabidoux, a prominent housing bear, to Vancouver to talk about how the market is set for a correction. But now, LePoidevin sees signs of one on Vancouver’s affluent west side, where June sales fell by 35.6 per cent year over year. Slowing sales have been blamed on a lack of supply in the past. But supply on the west side is actually up this year, with 12.5 per cent more detached homes listed for sale in June than a year ago. The west side has long been the subject of stories (and speculation) about the influence of foreign money, and how it’s been driving up prices in the area. Three years ago, the benchmark price of a single-family detached home there was $2,070,200. Last month, it was $3,547,000. LePoidevin thinks sales are dropping now because China is cracking down on money flowing out of the country in an attempt to keep its currency, the yuan, from depreciating. Chinese residents can only buy about $65,000 worth of foreign currency in a year, although some have found back channels allowing them to take out more.

There is no denying that the real estate market in Vancouver is red hot – prices have been rising with no end in sight. But one market analyst thinks we will see the bubble burst. Marc Cohodes used to run one of the largest hedge funds on Wall Street. Now, he’s eyeing the Canadian housing market. “Short selling in stocks is basically, you

borrow shares that other people own and you sell them,” said Cohodes. “If I was in the cattle business and I thought the price of cows were going to go down, I would sell all my cows, I would borrow some of your cows, I would sell them with the promise to buy them back and return them to you some day, and if they went down I would make, and if they went up and I got tired of my position, I would lose.” Cohodes made it clear that he has no personal stake in the Vancouver real estate market. Cohodes said he wants to speak out about the housing market in Vancouver because he feels strongly “people are being taken

advantage of.” Recent headlines of real estate deals in Vancouver include a 7,200-square-foot heritage mansion for sale in Vancouver’s Shaughnessy neighbourhood for $21 million and a a $2.398-million price tag for a ‘fixerupper’ in the Point Grey neighbourhood. The Greater Vancouver real estate board says the benchmark price of a detached home in Vancouver hit $1.56 million in June, which is up 38.7 per cent in one year. “I think it’s a money laundering-induced market,” said Cohodes. “Where the local politicians, or the BC Liberals, are kept or in cahoots with the real estate brokers, developers, lawyers, that angle. And they have sought Chinese money to keep the market propped up and it won’t last.” “China has capital controls on and Vancouver has become the money laundering mecca of either the world or North America and something is going to change and change drastically.” Tom Davidoff, an economist at UBC’s Sauder School of Business, said while he agrees with Cohodes that overseas capitalism is an important driver of our market, “whether there is anything illegal going on, and whether we should think of that as a bubble or a trend, I think are more challenging questions to answer.”
