Lange bevor die Passionsspiele in Oberammergau alle zehn Jahre ins allgemeine Bewusstsein vordringen, beginnen im Hintergrund die Vorbereitungen im Ort. Bühnenbildner Stefan Hageneier entwirft Pläne, nach denen die Bühne des Passionstheaters umgebaut wird. Chor und Orchester beginnen unter der Leitung von Markus Zwink zu proben. Und Spielleiter Christian Stückl macht sich Gedanken über die Textfassung und die Besetzung von Jesus, Kaiphas und der anderen Hauptrollen.
Preparations for the Passion Play in Oberammergau start long before most people start thinking about it. Stefan Hageneier creates new plans for the stage and costumes of Passion Play Theater. Markus Zwink starts to rehearse with the choir and orchestra. And director Christian Stückl starts to rewrite the script and thinks about the cast for Jesus, Caiaphas, and the other main characters.

Mit dem Gelübde fing 1633 alles an: Als die Pest im Ort ausgebrochen war, gelobten die Oberammergauer, alle zehn Jahre das Leiden Christi aufzuführen, um von der Krankheit verschont zu bleiben. Seitdem beginnt die Passionszeit mit einer Erneuerung dieses alten Versprechens im Rahmen eines festlichen Gottesdienstes im Passionstheater unter der Musikalischen Leitung von Markus Zwink. Anschließend wird die Besetzung der Hauptrollen vor dem Theater bekannt gegeben.

It all started in 1633 with the pledge: When the plague started killing people in the village, the inhabitants of Oberammergau pledged to enact the suffering of Christ every ten years to be spared from this disease. Since then, the renewal of the pledge marks the official beginning of the next Passion Play period. On the same day, the cast of the main actors will be announced in front of the theater.

Im Jahr vor der Passion spielen die Oberammergauer das Stück „Die Pest“ von Leo Weismantel. Es erzählt die Geschichte vom Ursprung der Spiele: von der Pest, die der Legende nach ein Mann namens Kaspar Schisler in den Ort gebracht hatte, und vom Gelübde, das das Leiden schließlich beendete. In the year prior to the Passion Play they perform “The Plague” by Leo Weismantel. It tells the story of the origin of the Passion Play, the legend of Kaspar Schisler, who brought the plague to Oberammergau, and the oath they made to end the suffering.

Die Proben für die Passion 2020 begannen im Dezember 2019, das Sprechensemble versammelte sich im Kleinen Theater zu ersten Lese- und Szenenproben. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt waren Haare und Bärte der Beteiligten schon einigermaßen lang, seit dem Haarund Barterlass am Aschermittwoch war niemand mehr beim Friseur gewesen.

In December 2019, rehearsals for the Passion Play 2020 began. The main cast gathered in the “Little Theater” for the first reading of the script. By this time, the hair and beards had grown to a respectable length, and the Passion Play could start. After all, the actors hadn’t been to the hairdresser since the hair and beard decree on Ash Wednesday the year prior.

At the beginning of 2020, rehearsals started on the big stage of the Passion Play Theater. Rehearsals took place in the bitter cold with alpine clothes and warm winter hats and gloves. It was the first time all the people would sing the “Hail to You” together, which echoed in the theater as Jesus entered.

Bei den Volksproben sind alle dabei: Männer, Frauen, Kinder, Alte und Junge. Das anfängliche Chaos, wenn Hunderte auf die Bühne strömen, ordnet sich schnell. Spielleiter Christian Stückl erklärt die Abläufe, ist mitten drin im Geschehen. Allmählich wachsen alle in ihre Rollen, aus der Menschenmenge werden Gruppen, Individuen.
Everyone takes part in the rehearsals: men, women, children, the young and old. Chaos starts when hundreds of people rush the stage and quickly unravels as director Christian Stückl explains the scene. Slowly all actors grow into their roles, and the crowd forms into tribes.

Ein besonderer Moment war die erste Kreuzigungsprobe im März 2020. Zum ersten Mal ertönten die lauten Hammerschläge im Theater, mit denen Jesus ans Kreuz geschlagen wird. Dass dies die letzte große Volksprobe in diesem Jahr sein sollte, war damals keinem bewusst.
A special moment was the first rehearsal in March of 2020 of the crucifixion scene. It was the first time the hammering of the nails would echo through the entire theater. At the time, nobody knew this would be the last rehearsal of the year.

Die Fotoaufnahmen für den Bildband waren in vollem Gange, als sich die Situation zunehmend verschärfte. Am 5. Tag der Aufnahmen rief Spielleiter Christian Stückl sein Team auf die Bühne. Viele ahnten bereits, was das hieß: Die Spiele mussten aufgrund der CoronaPandemie auf 2022 verschoben werden, die Proben kamen am 19. März 2020 zu einem abrupten Ende. As production for the photo book started, the situation got steadily worse. On the 5th day of the photo shoot, the director Christian Stückl called the entire team on stage. Many already suspected it: The Passion Play will be postponed to 2022 due to the Corona Pandemic. On 19th March 2020, rehearsals ended abruptly.

Im Februar 2022 geht es zurück auf die Bühne des Passionstheaters, die großen Volksproben beginnen von neuem. Auch wenn die Corona-Auflagen streng sind: Allen ist die Erleichterung anzumerken, dass es endlich weitergeht.

Im April kommen auch die Kindergruppen zum ersten Mal auf die Bühne. Nicht selten spielen sie gemeinsam mit ihren Eltern und Großeltern in den Volksszenen. Und natürlich mit ihren Freund:innen aus der Grundschule in Oberammergau sind fast alle Kinder dabei.
April 2022 was time for children to take the main stage in the Passion Play Theater finally. The children often play together with their parents and grandparents in the big crowded scenes. Nach und nach werden alle Szenen geprobt, aus denen sich schließlich die Passion zusammensetzt: die Vertreibung der Händler aus dem Tempel, das Abendmahl, die Verurteilung durch Pilatus und die Kreuzigung.

Als die Premiere näher rückt, beginnen die Endproben im Kostüm. Die einzelnen Szenen werden nun in ihrem Ablauf zusammengesetzt und im Durchlauf geprobt. Allmählich dringt es ins allgemeine Bewusstsein durch: Die Premiere der Spiele wird 2022 stattfinden.

Das Orchester spielt für das Publikum verborgen im Orchestergraben. Anders als bei gewöhnlichen Opernaufführungen erhebt es sich auch am Ende nicht für einen Applaus. Den nämlich gibt es nicht bei diesem religiösen Spiel.

Das Spiel mit 2000 Beteiligten wird nur möglich durch die Zusammenarbeit von vielen Menschen hinter der Bühne. In der Schneiderei werden lange vor Probenbeginn Maße genommen und tausende Kostüme genäht, Bühnenarbeiter:innen und Schreiner:innen sind mit dem Bau der Kulissen beschäftigt, die Requisite fertigt Engelsflügel, Dornenkronen und Palmwedel an.

Die Ausstattung für die zwölf Lebenden Bilder ist für die Bühnentechniker:innen am aufwendigsten. Nicht nur müssen die einzelnen Elemente wie das Goldene Kalb oder die Schlange aus der Schlangengrube gebaut werden, sie müssen auch exakt in den eigens angefertigten Bühnenwagen passen.
The crew’s most challenging task is the twelve living pictures. Individual scenes like the Golden Calf or the Bronze Snake must be built to the correct specifications to fit into the custom-made stage wagon.

Für die Umbauten vor und nach den Lebenden Bilder bleiben der Technik nur wenige Minuten Zeit. Während der Chor vor dem Vorhang singt, muss die eine Szene ab- und die nächste aufgebaut werden. Erst dann können sich die Spieler:innen in Position bringen.

Die Schneiderei war durch die Verschiebung der Spiele gleich doppelt gefordert: Nach der zweijährigen Pause mussten alle neu vermessen werden und manch ein Kostüm umgenäht werden. Bei den Kindern passte natürlich kein einziges Gewand mehr. Aus Erstklässlern waren Drittklässler geworden, aus Grundschülern beinahe Jugendliche.

Im März 2022 fotografiert die österreichischisländische Fotografin und Kamerafrau Birgit Guðjónsdóttir die wichtigen Szenen der Passion für den offiziellen Bildband der Spiele. Guðjónsdóttir will keine statischen Bilder, sie will die Situationen in ihrer Dynamik einfangen. In March of 2022, Islandic-Austrian photographer and cinematographer Birgit Guðjónsdóttir photographed significant scenes for the official book of the Passion Play. Guðjónsdóttir wants to capture each scene’s moment and not use staged photographs.

Endlich! Am 14. Mai 2022 ist es so weit, die 42. Oberammergauer Passionsspiele feiern zwei Jahre später als geplant Premiere. Mit einem feierlichen ökumenischen Gottesdienst im Passionstheater beginnt die Ausnahmezeit im Ort. Es sind besondere Spiele. Die Corona-Pandemie hat sie ihrem Ursprung sehr nahegebracht: Wieder sind sie ein Fest nach der Überwindung einer Krise. Oder zumindest ein Durchatmen, bevor man sich hier und überall neuen Krisen wird stellen müssen.

Finally, after a two-year wait, on 14th May 2022, the 42nd Oberammergau Passion Play premieres. An ecumenical service in the Passion Play Theater begins an extraordinary time in town. It is truly a unique Passion Play, and the pandemic has brought the play very close to its origin: It is again a celebration after overcoming a crisis. Or at least a time to take a breath before having to face new challenges.

FOTOGRAF Sebastian Schulte, geboren 2003, begleitet die Entstehung der Passionsspiele seit der Bekanntgabe der Darsteller 2018 mit der Kamera. Damals besuchte er noch das Benediktinergymnasium Ettal, stand kurz vor dem Abitur. Von da an hatte er immer die Kamera dabei, machte während der Proben Fotos auf und hinter der Bühne. Als offizieller Fotograf der Spiele hielt er alle wichtigen Momente rund um die Passion fest.

PHOTOGRAPHER Sebastian Schulte, born in 2003, has documented the making of the Passion Play with his camera. He started with the announcement of the actors in 2018 and ended with the premiere in May 2022. After graduating from Benediktinergymnasium Ettal in 2021, he always had his camera with him, looking for the right moment. As the official photographer, he captured many candid moments in and around the making of the play.
