THEATR CLWYD
WELCOME TO SUMMER AT THEATR CLWYD As the world commemorates the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death, we are producing two projects to celebrate his rich legacy. I will direct a contemporary reimagining of his sparkling romantic comedy, Much Ado About Nothing, bringing it to life through a complete transformation of the Anthony Hopkins Theatre, and the brilliant up-and-coming director John Young will premiere To Dream Again, a co-production with London’s renowned Polka Theatre. This magical reworking of A Midsummer Night’s Dream is being created especially to introduce young children to Shakespeare. To Dream Again and Much Ado, with their shared stories of delight, merriment and love, herald the arrival of summer and continue our tradition of bringing to life the work of the great playwright. This year’s Celtic Festival draws together the Celtic nations in three glorious weeks of theatre, dance, music and art, as we proudly celebrate our heritage. The Festival will begin with Phillip Breen’s production of Cyrano de Bergerac. An all-Welsh company, led by the acclaimed actor Steffan Rhodri, will bring this dazzling play to life in collaboration with Twm Morys, one of the greatest living Welsh poets, whose specially commissioned poetry shines new light on this passionate love story. In July and August we are delighted to offer a home to the work of some of our outstanding community companies as once again they animate our spaces with a broad range of productions. We welcome these community artists to Theatr Clwyd – dedicated people who devote their evenings and weekends to creating something truly special – live theatre. Theatr Clwyd is unique in the UK in being a producing theatre fully owned by a county council. We are proud and grateful that for forty years our council has been revolutionary in placing the arts at the very heart of what it offers to the community. In doing so, it gives us the chance to gather together – to share stories, to inspire and be inspired, to question and to celebrate what it means to be human – in the words of Shakespeare, to ‘hold the mirror up to nature’. CONTENTS
This is your building. Please come and enjoy it; bring your friends and family and celebrate the joys of summer with us. I look forward to seeing you soon. Tamara Harvey, Artistic Director PS: look out for our #CLWYD40 Festival – to be announced soon! Colour

Cyrano de Bergerac, soldier, fighter, lover, and prodigious wordsmith, is desperately in love with Roxanne – but he’s got the biggest nose that anyone has ever seen. Christian is beautiful in every aspect, he too loves Roxanne, but he’s taciturn, tongue-tied, dumbstruck; in Roxanne’s presence he cannot find the words. With Christian’s looks and Cyrano’s poetry the two set about wooing her as the perfect lover. But for Roxanne is this all too good to be true? After all, what is more important in a man, his body or his soul? What happens when there aren’t words for the very thing you want to say? And what happens when you lose yourself in translation? A fully Welsh ensemble reinterpret this classic of the French language in English, with some new Welsh language poetry by Twm Morys. Set in ‘Three Musketeers’ era Paris against the backdrop of war, comic and tragic in equal measure, Cyrano de Bergerac is one of the most epic love stories of all time. Directed by Phillip Breen following his hit productions of The Shoemaker’s Holiday and The Merry Wives of Windsor at the RSC, True West at Citizens Theatre, Glasgow and The Tricycle Theatre, London and Measure For Measure at Theatr Clwyd.

Nothing can keep young lovers Claudio and Hero apart… Until the underhand cunning of the villainous Don John threatens their marriage. Benedick and Beatrice are embroiled in an altogether more mischievous battle of wits… Surely nothing can bring the sparring pair together? In this, Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary year, join us for a contemporary reimagining of his fast-paced, razor-sharp romance, never before produced at Theatr Clwyd. Delightful and uplifting, Much Ado About Nothing offers sparkling summer entertainment. Tamara Harvey began her career at Shakespeare’s Globe. Her most recent directing credits include Pride and Prejudice at the Sheffield Crucible, the world premiere of Tim Rice’s musical From Here To Eternity in the West End and the award-winning The Kitchen Sink at the Bush Theatre.

“I wasn’t scared – because this was a magical wood. I was excited, nervous. My heart was beating, like it does just before your birthday, or on Christmas Eve, when you know something is about to happen at any moment. And then I saw him. Her. It.” In 2016 the world is celebrating the 400th Anniversary of William Shakespeare. As part of our contribution we are creating a new play in partnership with Polka Theatre London. Drawn from A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the play mixes the real and the unreal, the everyday and the magical, waking and sleeping, funny and sad, and will be a perfect introduction to Shakespeare for young people. This play is perfectly marbled and bashed about till tender: a surreal, black comedy of love, longing and one woman’s intense rivalry with a Charolais Heifer. This is a muddy place of simmering desire minced with a loneliness that cuts to the bone. Rarely in theatre are the challenges of farming life and the joy of sex expressed so frankly or with such charm. If you are fond of cows and dark humour this is the show for you! An amusing account of how one man turned an unfulfilled dream to bridge a void after losing his job. Joe is in total control of his world. It’s a pity that it exists only in 1/35 scale and is made of plastic. Meanwhile, back in real life, there’s a competition coming up and Joe just wants to be left alone to build his models and win best in show. Unemployment has finally given him the time to enjoy his hobby of sticking bits of plastic together, but unfortunately his wife, his kids, the bank, his nemesis Hermann (whose real name is Brian), the checkout girl in Tesco and Angela Merkel have other ideas.

Quietly she tiptoes from the house to climb up through the forest to ask the King for food. But Molly doesn’t know that there is a Giant in the forest or that to reach the King she must cross the Bridge of the One Hair! Based on a traditional Scottish tale, underscored with live harp, with Gavin Marwick on fiddle, Molly Whuppie is one of the best loved children’s theatre shows in Scotland and an unforgettable experience for 3-12 year olds and everyone else! “When I was a boy, I was afraid of the dark... What was there? And maybe one of the things I thought was there was vampires.” A man tells an extraordinary tale of booze, all-night parties, and blood. As a theatre critic, he’s used to spinning all manner of wild and outrageous stories. This one is different. World-weary, he’s on the run from his family, his responsibilities and himself. Enchanted by a young actress, he is tempted into a world of candle-lit hedonism, darkness, and vampires. This razor-sharp satire lifts the lid on race and real estate in a fictional Chicago neighbourhood. The swinging sixties are just around the corner as a black family moves into a suburban white enclave, triggering all too predictable mutterings from the neighbours. Fifty years on, we return to the same house in 2009 as gentrification sets in and the roles are reversed. One skilful ensemble of actors plays two sets of characters in a play hailed as ‘shockingly entertaining’ and ‘appallingly funny’. Bruce Norris’s hilarious satire Clybourne Park took the West End by storm following a sold-out run at the Royal Court Theatre in London. Acclaimed by critics and audiences alike since its debut on Broadway. In 2009, Clybourne Park was awarded Best Play at the Olivier Awards, Best Play at the Tony Awards, the Evening Standard Best Play Award, the South Bank Sky Arts Theatre Award and Critics’ Circle Best Play Award.

As part of the Celtic Festival Iwan Gwyn Parry will be giving an informal talk about his work in the gallery on Tuesday 10 May at 2pm – tickets free from the Box Office.
