Welcome to a bright new season at Theatre Calgary. Every few years in this country a piece of theatre emerges as vibrant, original and surprising, grabbing everyone’s attention. Welcome to Kim’s Convenience, a play that every theatre enthusiast in Canada will soon be talking about as it embarks on a national tour. Kim’s Convenience sprang from the imagination of Toronto writer Ins Choi. Like many great writers, Choi has drawn from own personal experience, and the more he exposes his heart, the more truthful and universal this story becomes. How impressive that he also acts in his own play, taking on the role of Jung. When I see him up there on stage, I am astonished at his talent!

Up Next The Great Gatsby bursts to life onstage in a vibrant new staging thanks to talented director Kim Collier. Expect music, decadence, beauty, thrill and horror – all signatures of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s elegant examination of the American dream.

When Soulpepper was considering touring this play, they asked me whether a story about a Toronto convenience store would resonate in Calgary. I saw the original production last year and some of the local references were unknown to me, but these people and their struggle to retain and support their identity seems to me a very Calgary subject. As our city grows and our immigrant population expands, we will see the conversation in and around this play continue to dominate and shape our future. How exciting, timely, and relevant. The more we share our stories throughout our land, the more we will realize that this Toronto convenience store is also our convenience store, their dreams are our dreams, and we aren’t all that different as might appear. Thank you for joining me in this celebration of this wonderful new play.

THE GREAT GATSBY glamour, decadence, obsession By F. Scott Fitzgerald • Adapted for the Stage by Simon Levy • Director Kim Collier • Set & Costume Design Judith Bowden • Lighting Design Alan Brodie • Composer & Arrangements Andrew Creeggan • Choreographer Anita Miotti • Sound Design Jonathan Lewis Featuring: Julien Arnold, Tory Doctor, Craig Erickson, Bob Frazer, Jason Hardwick, Christopher Hunt, Jamie Konchak, Amy Rutherford, Celine Stubel, Ksenia Thurgood, Jonathon Young, Katharine Zaborsky Stage Manager Jan Hodgson • Assistant Stage Manager Ailsa Birnie • Apprentice Stage Manager Justin Born

For mysterious and wealthy Jay Gatsby, a seemingly perfect life of lavish parties and privilege hides a darker world of obsession. His quest to win back his first love threatens to shatter many lives and change more than one American dream. Experience the glitz and glamour of the Jazz Age and one of the most unforgettable stories of the twentieth century. We’ve had huge success bringing great novels to life on our stage. This adaptation is a thrilling ride through a very sexy and complicated time in history. One of Canada’s most innovative theatre artists, Kim Collier, directs this production – for our eyes only. – Dennis

A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT My father grew up in North Korea. Since his birth, until the end of the Second World War, it was “occupied” by the Japanese. Soon after WWII, the Korean Civil War broke out. During that time, he and his family walked south, across the mountainous Korean peninsula with thousands of others in search of freedom. My mother grew up in an orphanage in war-torn South Korea raising her younger brother from the age of five. After graduating high school, she worked as a secretary for the government when she met my father. They set foot in Canada in 1975 with $200, three kids and hope. My father worked at my uncle’s convenience store by day and went to ESL classes by night, while my mother took care of me and my two older sisters. We lived with my uncle’s family in the apartment above their convenience store on Weston Rd. and Black Creek Dr. After a performance of Kim’s Convenience at the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival, my parents came up to me, hugged me and said, “We are very proud of you. Thank you.” Kim’s Convenience is my love letter to them and to all the firstgeneration immigrants who call Canada their home. Ins Choi Playwright and Jung in Kim’s Convenience

“A STORY NEEDING TO BE TOLD.” Kim’s Convenience began as a short vignette for an event at Toronto’s fu-GEN Theatre. Director Nina Lee Aquino, among others, felt there was more to be mined: a story rooted in the city but not often portrayed on the stage. A story needing to be told. With Aquino’s encouragement and guidance, Ins Choi set out to create a full-length play. But first he acted at the Stratford Festival, won a place in the Soulpepper Academy, and became a father twice over. The play grew slowly, gaining supporters as it went. Choi’s faith community at Grace Toronto Church, for example, funded a week-long workshop. When Kim’s Convenience was finally submitted to the Toronto Fringe Festival New Play Contest, it won. The subsequent production and extension were sold out. Soulpepper saw a chance to champion a new work that celebrates a completely Torontonian story. And here we are – now travelling across Canada.

From the 1980’s, when the Kim family of the play moves into Regent Park, Koreans have been a fixture in Toronto convenience stores. In the enormously appealing character of Mr. Kim, or Appa (father), we see the smarts, courage, resourcefulness, and humour these immigrants brought with them. Through his customers and perhaps most vividly through his children, we also see Mr. Kim’s prejudices, hopes, fears and longings. He is a fully rounded, richly realized creation, and a gift for any actor. Listen to Mr. Kim on the subject of who’s stealing and who isn’t. Watch him deal with other businessmen. His daughter may speak better English, but she has her hands full in an argument with her tough-minded Appa. Mr. Kim’s all-too familiar difficulty is he has knowledge, but no one to pass it on to: neither of his children will take over the business when he retires. They have other dreams – desires Mr. Kim and his wife’s hard work and sacrifice have helped make possible. One of the script’s most revealing aspects is its portrait of the inner-city neighbourhood of Regent Park. The closeness and pride among those who live there is perhaps most simply and beautifully summed up in Mr. Kim’s response to the idea of closing his store, “This community need me.” The gentrification now underway may improve some buildings, and there’ll certainly be more pricey condominiums, but what will happen to the people who have called this community home for years? What will happen to the small businesses that have so faithfully served them? Through this one family, their business, and their loyal clientele, Ins Choi has given us a hilarious, touching glimpse of a corner of our world. Here. And now. By Paula Wing, Associate Artist, Soulpepper Theatre

“They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” - Andy Warhol

While not autobiographical, this play is grounded in a thorough knowledge of the milieu. In fact, Choi originally wanted to stage it in an actual convenience store. “You got that smell,” he says. “You got that convenience store smell, the dust, the grime, the bell…” That idea didn’t come to pass, but this tender, funny and surprising script evokes the setting brilliantly, giving the play a powerful integrity and authenticity. One of its many pleasures is the “behind the scenes” look we get at this staple of our economy. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Andre Sills

Here’s Your Cue

Tom McCabe, Margo Randles, and Brant Randles at Night With The Stars 2013. Photo by Jeff Yee, Raindrop Images.

Q

Q: How long have you been

involved with Theatre Calgary and in what capacity?

A: I joined the Theatre Calgary Board in 2010, sitting on the artistic and special events committees. In 2011 I joined the Executive Committee.

Q: When did you start participating in the

Night With The Stars (NWTS) gala event?

A: My role in Night With The Stars has grown

every year. Before I came on the Board, I had attended NWTS as a guest for a couple of years. Since my first year on the Board in 2010, I have been on the organizing committee. In 2012 I co-chaired the event, while in 2013, I chaired it. For the 2014 event, I am still on the committee, but I will be supporting the two new co-chairs, Barry Kenley and Michele Beitel. I am really looking forward to it!

Q: What do you think is the

A

: The proceeds go to Shakespeare in the Park (SITP). SITP allows Theatre Calgary to support emerging artists in Alberta, and provides pay-what-you-will live theatre to all Calgarians.

Most people don’t realize that the price we pay for a ticket at Theatre Calgary only covers 60% of what it costs to put on the production. Not only does NWTS make it possible for Theatre Calgary to provide theatre in Calgary, but it is also necessary for other endeavors, such as SITP. At the end of the day, theatre is what it is all about!

Q: How do sponsors of NWTS benefit from this event?

A: Sponsors of NWTS see this as a

wonderful opportunity to be recognized as a major supporter of Theatre Calgary to the over 120,000 annual attendees of Theatre Calgary and the over 500 attendees of the evening. It shows their willingness to support arts in Calgary. Many of the major sponsors often choose to come to the event to meet many of the patrons of Theatre Calgary. One of the sponsor benefits is that they are recognized in Theatre Calgary’s play bill for the season.

Q: What can NWTS attendees expect which will be broadcast live throughout the evening. The glamour of the room will be set in the 1920s theme of the The Great Gatsby, which will highlight Theatre Calgary’s production in October. As attendees walk the red carpet, they will be surrounded by the same magical atmosphere and experience that Theatre Calgary creates on the stage. Our food selection is themed around the Academy Award nominated movies. The night is full of glitz and glam.

A: I think that NWTS has become a tradition; we

A: By attending NWTS, you will personally

A: I think that NWTS allows the Board to reach

out to the community at large. Attendees and sponsors enjoy an exceptional evening while showing their support of Theatre Calgary at the same time. It is a great collaboration between the Board, the Theatre and the Community.

Q: What is the best way for others to get involved with the event?

A: There are many ways to get involved

in this event. Tickets are now on sale for the event. There are still sponsorship opportunities. There are opportunities to donate to the live or silent auction. You can also get involved on the organizing committee, which is made up of Board and community supporters. As well, volunteers are always needed and appreciated.

Sponsorship opportunities are available.

Q: Is there anything else you want to share

about Theatre Calgary or Night with the Stars?

A: On behalf of the Board of Theatre Calgary,

I would encourage all supporters of Theatre Calgary to attend this exciting evening and experience the uniqueness that only Theatre Calgary could provide. And by so doing, your support of this event will ensure that additional endeavours for Theatre Calgary, such as SITP, are sustainable. The 20th NWTS will prove to be the most ambitious and entertaining gala yet!
