WELCOME

T hisOctober,OscarWildewouldhavecelebratedhis 168thbirthday.Celebratedpoet,W.B.Yeatsoncesaid ofOscarWilde “ThedinnertablewasWilde’seventand madehimthegreatesttalkerofhistime,andhisplays anddialogueshavewhatmerittheypossessfrombeingnow animitation,nowarecord,ofhistalk.” Forthosewhoare notfamiliarwithOscarWilde,heisconsideredoneof thegreatestplaywrightsofthelatenineteenthcentury. However,itwasOscar’spassionforself-publicityand witticismsthatkept(andkeeps)himintheconsciousness ofthepublic.Uponinvestigation,notonlyareWilde’s witticismshilarious,butdeeplytruthfulandresonateoveracentury-and-a-half sincehistriumphanteraofpopularity.Hereareahandfulthatcaughtmyattention:

“Alwaysforgive yourenemies;nothingannoysthemsomuch.”

“Everythinginmoderation,includingmoderation.”

“Beyourself;everyoneelseisalreadytaken.”

“Toloveoneselfisthebeginningofalifelongromance.”

“Onlydullpeoplearebrilliantatbreakfast.”

Perhapsit washisbirth name, Oscar FingalO’FlahertieWillsWildethat gavehim apassionfortheflamboyant?Hard to know wherehisrazor-sharp focusedwit camefrom, butit’s comfortingto knowthathis wordsare aliveandlivingwellon ourstagewiththehilariousplay TheImportanceofBeingEarnest.ThisisTheatre Calgary’sfourthproductionoftheplay.Wefirstproduceditin1970,againin1978, andonceagainin1995.Ihopeyou enjoy thisscrumptious productionofOscar Wilde’s mostpopular play,and the second-mostproducedshowinourhistory (the first being AChristmasCarol)!

When TheImportanceofBeingEarnest premieredin Londonin1895,OscarWildewasquotedinthe St.James’sGazette , explainingthattheplay was “exquisitelytrivial,adelicatebubbleoffancy” andthatphilosophyoftheplayis“thatweshouldtreat allthetrivialthingsoflifeseriously,andalltheserious thingsoflifewithasincereandstudiedtriviality.”

Thiswastheway Wildelived—aconstantcontrastof sincerityandtriviality.Shortlyafterthepremiereofhis play,hislife tookatragicturn.Hewasontrialfor“gross indecency”withinweeksandsentencedto two years imprisonmentwithhardlabouronlymonthslater.He hadbeenleadingadoublelife,justlikeJackandAlgernon,butluckilyhewasableto givehischaractersahappierending.

Sowhatisitabout The Importance of Being Earnest thatstillmakes us laugh out loud welloveracenturylater?Well,asLadyBracknellsays,“welive,Iregrettosay,inan ageofsurfaces.”Thisfeelsastruenowas itwasinOscarWilde’stime.Infact,despite thefactthathissatiretargetstheupperclassesofVictorianEngland,thejokesstill ringtrue.It’sjustasdelightfulnow(ifnotmoreso)tolaughoutloudatthepure absurdityofthesecharacters’artificeandsuperficiality.Infact,asIwasdivingback intotheworldofthisplay(thathasbeenoneofmypersonalfavouritesforyears),I keptthinkingofshowslike Bridgerton—setlongagoandfarawaybutwrittenwiththe sensibilitiesofhereandnow.Tome,OscarWildewassoaheadofhistimeinwriting thisscriptthatIimaginewecouldcomeacrossthesecharactersonscreentoday, althoughcertainlynotwithhisuniquewit.AsGwendolentellsus,“inmattersofgrave importance,style,notsincerity,isthevitalthing,”andveryfewauthorsliveupto Wilde’sstyle.

IamsogratefultothisincredibleteamofartistsandtheentireTheatreCalgarystaff forcomingtogethertohelpbringthesecharactersbacktolifeonceagain.It’satruejoy togather,toplayandto laugh. I hope that whether this is yourfirsttimeencountering Earnest orifyou’veseenitmanytimesbefore,youjoinusinthejoyofthissincere—and serious—triviality.

OscarWilde(1854–1900)wasborninDublin toSirWilliamWildeandhiswifeJane.While studyingatOxford,hewasfascinatedbythe aestheticmovementandeventuallybecame a proponent for L’artpourl’art (‘ArtforArt’s Sake’), andwrotetheaward-winningpoem Ravenna.Afterhe graduatedin1879,hemovedtoChelseainLondonto establishaliterarycareer.Upongraduatingin1879, hemovedtoLondontoreviewart,writepoetryand lectureintheUK,theUnitedStates,andCanada.In 1884,Mr. WildemarriedConstanceLloydand,inthe courseoftheirturbulentmarriage,hadtwosons.

Hisfirstandonlynovel, ThePictureofDorianGray, waspublishedin1891andhasbeenadaptedforthe stage.Mr.Wilde’sfirstsuccessfultheatricalendeavor, LadyWindermere’sFan,openedin1892.Hewentonto createthewonderfullypopularcomedies AWomanof NoImportance (1893), AnIdealHusband (1895),and theclassic TheImportanceofBeingEarnest (1895).

Notlongafterward,Mr.Wildewaspubliclyaccused ofhomosexualityandarrestedforgrossindecency.
