Istartedwritingthisplayinmysecondyearofmythree yearstintatStudio58,LangaraCollege’s TheatreSchoolin Vancouver, twenty-five yearsago.WhenIwaswritingthe firstdraftsofthisplayIwasdigestingShakespeare,Ionesco andMolière.AndIwasthinkingabouttheTricksterstoriesIknew,andhowtheywere way weirderthanthesedudes.

Many Tricksterstoriesareabsurdandoftenverysexual.Theyarestoriesof transformationanddeceptionwherenothingisasitseems.N’shinkayep,Coyoteisan N’alakapamuxtrickster.N’shinkayepisvain,lustful,impulsive,selfishandfoolish.An anti-herothatisadeceiverandaphilosopher,aloverandawarrior.Agiantkillerand atransformerwhocanshapeshiftandtransformtheworldaroundthem,creatingthe landscapesweknowtoday.

ThisplaywasfirstproducedatStudio58aspartofastudentoneactplayseries.Since thenIwouldtakeitouteveryfourorfive yearsandtweakitabit,workshopitandthen gettoobusytodoanythingfurtherwithit.Iamgratefulafterallthistimetobeableto shareitwithyou.

IwasinspiredtowritethispieceallthoseyearsagowhenIinvolvedinaneffortto saveanoldgrowthwatershedintheFraserCanyon.IwasanIndigenousobservertoa survey teamhiredbythemultinationalloggingcompanythatwasgoingtoclearcutthe valley.InthecourseofmyworkIwasabletoidentifyevidenceofourcontinueduse ofthatwatershedbydocumentinganenormousstandofcedartreesthathadbeen culturallymodifiedoverhundredsofyears.Ihadsavedthevalley!OrsoIthought. IntheendtheFirstNationthatIwashiredby wantedaccess totheresourcesofthe watershedand myworkwouldgivethemleveragetoensuretheirloggerswouldbe hiredtoharvestthevalley. Thiswouldbringmuchneededeconomicbenefitstothe community,butIwasnaïveandthoughtmy rolewastosaveit.

Thisplayisnotaboutthatparticularexperiencebutitdidprovokealotofquestions. Itprovokedmetothinkaboutcolonialismandsovereigntyandourrelationshiptothe land.Italsomademethinkaboutwhatwesacrificewhenweengagewiththesystems thatoppressus.

ThisisaTricksterfableaboutlandclaims,colonialismandlustwherenothingissacred andnoonewalks awayunscathed.
