JimmyBuffett’sEscapetoMargaritaville won itbyalandslide.Itreceivedtwiceasmany votesasthe runnerup.PerhapsitreceivedabumpfromtheCalgary’s dedicatedcontingentofJimmyBuffettfans(whoareknown as“Parrotheads”),butIlike tothinkitwasbecausethiscity isreadyforabitofanescape.Anescapefromthecold.An escapetothetropics,tofunandjoy. Thisisashowthatwill have yousinginginthecaronthewayhomewithasmileonyourface,andthereis somethingtransformativeaboutsittinginyourtheatreseatfortwohoursandsmiling theentiretime.Whenwesawthehappinessthisshowwouldbring,weknewthatour nextseason,2023-24,willresonatewithaudiences.

JamesWilliamBuffettwasbornonChristmasDay,1946, inPascagoula,Mississippi.In1970,hemovedtoNashville topursueacareerasacountrysingerandsignedhisfirst recordcontract.Buffetthimselfhasdescribedhismusicas “GulfandWestern”,ablendofcountry&westernandfolk-rock, flavouredwiththethemesoftheGulfcoast.Hisuniquestyle ofmusichasresultedinover24recordsandacommunityoffansknownasParrotheads. What’saParrothead?ThistermisappliedtothemostdevoutfansofJimmyBuffett’smusic. BeforeIsaw EscapetoMargaritaville,Iwasn’tawareofmanyofJimmy’ssongs.However, afterwatchingthismusicalonBroadway,Idownloadedaslewofthem.Hissongsare,what Iliketocall“ear-candy.”
EscapetoMargaritaville isnotabiography ofJimmyBuffett’s rise to fame and the communityofParrotheadsthatexistworldwide.Instead,thewritersofthemusical decidedtowriteanoriginalstorythatwasinspiredbyBuffett’ssongs.Thereisalotto garnerfromhiscatalogofsongsthathehaswritten.Notjustbeachpartymusic,but songsthattouchthehumanheart.SongswhereJimmy toldrichstories–anditwasin thosestoriesthatthewritersfoundtheirinspirations.
