Thisplayisaboutperseverance.It’sabouttranscending thechallengesandlimitationsthatlifethrowsinone’s pathinpursuitofahigheraim.Itisaplayaboutan artist,BillieHoliday,reflectingonalifetimeofchoices madeinanefforttountangleanartisticknot.

Whatisanartisticknotyouwonder?Idescribeitasthe irrationalcompulsiontopursueenlightenment,nirvana, bliss,orclaritythroughartisticexpression.

What’sremarkableaboutthisplayishowclearlywesee anartistsimultaneouslyattheheightofherinterpretive powersandataprofoundlylowpointinherpersonaland emotionaldevelopment. Her best friend, LesterYoung,hasjustdied,sheismarriedto ashockinglyabusivehusband,shehasonlyafewpenniesinherbankaccount,andher livelihood(performinginintimatejazzclubs)isinjeopardy.Andyet,inspiteofallthis, BillieHoliday wasdriventoperform.Driventofindthesoulorthe“feeling”attheheart ofasongandsharethatwithanadoringaudience.Inherownwords:

“If you find a tune and it’s got something to do with you, you don’t have to evolve anything. You just feel it, and when you sing it other people canfeel something too.”

Thisstate,thiscompulsion,thisdesiretoknowthyselfasanartist,tocommunicate whatyouknow,andtosomehowtransformanaudienceisuniversalamongstartists. Chasingtheephemeraof“feeling”throughartisticexpressionisuniversalamongst artists.Miningpastexperiences,whethertraumaticorjoyful,isuniversalamongst artists.But,alas,notallartistsrisetotheheightsthatBillieHolidaydid.Notallartists arefortunateenoughtohaveamassiveaudienceclamouringfortheirart.

WhatisitaboutBillieHolidaythatsolidifiedherpositionamong“thegreats”?Is ither perfectpitch(hardly),thegenerosityofherspirit(notatall),herlady-likelanguage (don’tmakemelaugh).No.Itisnoneofthosethingsthatmadeheraninternational treasure,thatmadehermusicubiquitousandapartofthesoundtrackofourlives.I believeit isher braveryofherdoggedquesttobeherself,andtounabashedlybring herselfpleasureeven if that quest broughtitsfairshareofpain.BillieHoliday was unapologeticallyBillieHoliday.

Mygreathopeforyouwatchingtoday’sperformanceisthatyouareinspiredtobe moreauthenticallyYOUinwhateveritisthatyoudo.Ifyouworkatthebank,Ihope thatthisstorywakesupthedesirethatlivesinyoutodoyourbankingworkwitha flairthatonlyYOUcanbringtoit.Ifyouareaparent,Ihopethatthisstoryemboldens youtoparentyourchildreninexactlythewaythatonlyYOUcando.And,ifyouare anartist,Ihopethatthisstoryremindsyouthattherehasneverbeenanartistlikeyou before,andthereneverwillbeanartistlikeyouagain-beyourwhole-heartedself.

AaronDouglas(1899-1979)wasanAfrican-American painter, illustratorand visual artseducator.Hewasa majorfigureinthe HarlemRenaissance. Hedeveloped hisart careerpainting muralsand creatingillustrations that addressed socialissuesaroundraceandsegregation intheUnited States byutilizingAfrican-centric imagery.
