WELCOME TO THEATRE CALGARY

Ihaveprofoundfaithinstorieslike Forgiveness thatwetell onandoffourstages.Asweconfronttheever-changing social,political,andphysicallandscapeoftheworld,Iseethe potentialforchange—effectivechange—comingfromthe simpleactofsharingapowerfulstoryonastage. Forgiveness looks atthepastthroughthepresentandrevealsaworldteetering ontheedgeofanabyss.Whydowesoenjoylookingbackinto ourcollectivepast?Thereisasimpleanswertothisinquiry–we studyourpastbecausewecanviewhistoryfromasafedistance. Thefactsapersonresearchesaboutacertaintopic,likeWorld WarIIortheinternmentmightangerandhurtsomepeople,but thereisnothingthatpersoncandoaboutit–becauseitisin thepast.Inotherwords,historycannotdirectlyharmussince itisnotatarm’slength.However,whatwe’rediscoveringtodayisthatthepastisrepeating itself.Andso,wecanlearnfromourpast.Asadirector,tocollaboratewithateamofartists intranslatingthepowerfulwords,images,andhistoryofthecharacterswithin Forgiveness isa truegift.Thisgiftisverypersonaltomeastherearedirecthistoricalconnectionsthatinvolved my family–my father’sfamily(theArimas) wereinternedinBritishColumbia,andmyuncle (BruceColetteMcDonald)servedintheRoyalCanadianAirForceasLeadingAircraftsman forthreeyears.Theircollectiveandindividualliveswereultimatelytouchedbytheeventsof WorldWarII.Whatmakesdirectingthisplaysuchamiracleisthattheadaptationhasfound auniquevoicethoroughtheplaywright,HiroKanagawa.HirohasimbuedMarkSakamoto’s memoirwithaheavydoseoftheatrepoetrytoallowthesecaptivatinggroupsofpeopletolive andflourishonastage. Forgiveness isnotonlyalove-lettertothetheatreandtheintriguing wayswecantellstories,butit’salsoathought-provokingpiecethatholdsamirrorupto theworldweliveintodayandasksimportantquestions(withoutforcingananswer)about culture,tradition,xenophobia,andbelonging.Sincetheworldandhowwerelatetoeachother isevolvingatarapidpace,Isometimesfindmyselfcaughtupinthecycloneoftweetsand Googlealerts.However,Icanalwaysrelyonthegroundingenergyofenteringatheatre,sitting inmyseat,perusingthroughtheprogram,andallowingmyselftobeopentothewonderment andbreathtakingpoweroftheatrestorytelling.Ihopethatyoufindasimilarsensationsasyou experiencethisperformanceof Forgiveness.

Throughouttherehearsalprocessandevenintothe previewsof Forgiveness inVancouverearlierthisyear, theplayyouareabouttoseeunderwentnumerous edits,cutsandrewritesonanear-dailybasis.Formy dramaturgStephenDrover,thequote:“Aplayisnever finished,merelyabandoned,”becameakindofmantra. Thequotehasvariousattributionsbutinthetheatrical context,itappears tooriginatewithAmericandirectorAlan Schneider.In1962ashewasabouttopremiere Who’sAfraid ofVirginiaWoolf? onBroadway,Schneiderremarkedtoa journalist,“Idon’tknowofanyperfectplay.Aworkofartis nevercompleted,onlyabandoned.Theonlyperfectplayisadeadplay.”

Ihaveneverfeltthismorekeenlythanwith Forgiveness. Thestorybegan,afterall,as thelivedexperienceofMarkSakamoto’sgrandparents,RalphMacLeanandMitsue Sakamoto.Asaworkofliteraryart, Forgiveness wasthenanessayMarkwroteforthe GlobeandMail.Heexpandeditintoabelovedandaward-winningbookwhichwasthen adaptedbymeforthestageandmagnificentlyrealizedinthisproductiondirectedby StaffordArima.TheplayhasenjoyedatremendouslysuccessfulruninVancouver,but evenastheshowopenedStaffordandIknewthattherewerechangeswewantedto makeforCalgary,changeswesimplyranoutofrehearsaltimetoimplement.Thegreat giftofthisco-productionbetweentheArtsClubandTheatreCalgaryandthe“rolling premiere”theshowhasbeenaccordedisthatwenowhaveanopportunitytoincorporate everythingwelearnedattheStanleyinVancouverintoourrunhereattheMaxBell.

Noneofthiscouldhavehappened,ofcourse,withoutadirector,acastandcrew,anda designteamwillingandabletorollwiththepunches.Itisatestamenttotheirartistry, commitmentandfearlessnessthat Forgiveness remainsaliving,evolvingworkofart.And nowyou,theCalgaryaudience,willplayalargeroleinhowthisplaycontinuestogrow.

Thephrase“ittakesavillage”comestomindasIreflectonhowtheplay Forgiveness wascreated.IamforevergratefultoRalphMacLeanandMitsueSakamotowholived thisstory, toMarkSakamotowhosharedtheirexperienceswiththeworld,andto hisextendedfamilywhotrustedmeandembracedmeasoneoftheirown.Thework ofcreatingaproductionofthisscaleandambitioncouldthennothavebeendone withoutthegenerousandsteadfastsupportofvirtuallyeveryresource availablein theCanadiantheatreecology.Fromthewordgo,boththeArtsClubandTheatre Calgarywereunwavering in their belief that this play wouldbeproduced.TheBanff Playwrights’Labprovidedthetime,space,andresourcesformetocompletethefirst draft.AndanimmenselyimportantgrantfromtheNationalCreationFundallowedthe designteamtointegrateanimationby CindyMochizukiintotheoverallconcept.

Forgiveness remains,thankfully,imperfect,notdead.Toexperienceit,Ihope,isto experiencesomethingorganic.IknowIspeakforallinvolvedwhenIsaythatweare thrilledtonowwelcomeyou,theCalgaryaudience,onthenextlegofthisshow’s evolution.

Fromthetimethefirstrecorded Japaneseimmigrantsbegan toarriveinCanadainthe late1800s,JapaneseCanadians facedracialdiscrimination.They werenotallowedtovoteandwere barredfrommanyjobs.Asseenin Forgiveness,discriminationworsened whenCanadadeclaredwaron Japanin1941.Eventhoughmost JapaneseCanadianswerebornin Canadaorhadbecomenaturalized citizens,Canadaorderedtheirmass incarcerationandtheappropriation oftheirproperty.Thegovernment ignoredthe RCMPandmilitary leaders,whostatedthatJapanese Canadianswerenotathreatto Canada’ssecurity.

Hastings Park

Inearly1942,thePacificNational Exhibition(PNE)groundsat HastingsParkinEastVancouver wereusedtotemporarilyhouse JapaneseCanadianslikeMitsueand herfamily,whowerebeinguprooted fromtheBCCoast.Over8,000were detainedinthebuildingsandstables therebeforebeingsenttointernment sitesintheBCinteriororwork campsacrossthecountry.Formany JapaneseCanadians,livinginHastings Parkwasaterrible,fearfulexperience. Conditionswereextremelyprimitive andunsanitary.Theprimarymemory formanyJapaneseCanadians internedatHastingsParkwasthe horriblesmell,followedbythenoise, theboredom, and the terriblefood.

Life in the Internment Era (1942-1949)

JapaneseCanadiansbuilt communitiesinharshand isolatedconditions.Ininternment camps,theylivedinsmall,quickly builtshackswithnoinsulation, runningwater,orelectricity.Men wereseparatedfromtheirfamilies, whooftendidn’tknowwheretheir relatives were sent for months. Onsugarbeetfarms,everyoneold enoughtoworkspentlonghoursin thefields.

Evenwhileimprisoned,Japanese Canadianstriedtomaketheirnewcommunitiesbetterbysettingupschools,churches, andactivities.Youngadultsvolunteeredtoteachschoolandcoachbaseballteams.

Legacies

Thestruggleforredresstook many years.Particularly throughthe1980s,Japanese Canadiansworkedhardtoeducate allCanadiansabouttheinternment. Manyasked,“Couldanythingtruly makeupforallwehadlostand endured?”

The1988redresssettlementwas negotiatedbetweentheNational AssociationofJapaneseCanadians andthefederalgovernment.In 2012,MLANaomiYamamoto,the firstJapaneseCanadianelected totheLegislativeAssembly,led aMotionofApologytotheJapaneseCanadiansintheBCLegislature.Thisbegana processthatresultedinPremierJohnHorgan’sannouncementofaprovincialredress settlementinMay2022toacknowledgetheBCprovincialgovernment’srolein JapaneseCanadianinternment.

In2015,fourcommemorativeplaqueswereunveiledatsitesaroundHastingsPark. TheJapaneseCanadianHastingsParkInterpretive CentreSocietyiscurrently developingplansforanonsiteexhibittocommemoratethishistoryandthepeople incarceratedthere.

December,1941-DuringtheSecondWorldWar, CanadiansoldiersfirstfoughtdefendingtheBritish CrownColonyofHongKongagainstaJapaneseattack. Withminimalmilitarytraining,theCanadiansoldiers foughtinHongKongagainstoverwhelmingodds,with verylittlechanceofsuccess.Eventuallysurrenderingto theenemyafterbeingovertaken,thesurvivingsoldiers becameJapaneseprisonersofwar(Ralphiscaptured onChristmasDay,1941).Fromthispointforward,they wouldexperiencestarvation,torture,andinhumane livingconditionsforfouryears.

ChristmasDay,1941-Ralphiscapturedandbecomes Japaneseprisonerofwar.

1942-MitsuemarriesHideoSakamotoshortlybefore theirfamilyisuprootedandsenttoCoaldale,AB,during JapaneseevacuationofVancouver. Theyarehousedin afarmer’schickencoopandmadetodostooplabouron theland.

1945-Aftertheprisonerofwarcampsareliberated, Ralphreturns toCanada.Whiletransporting back to QuebecfromVancouver,astopinCalgaryleadsRalph tomeetPhyllis,whomhefallsinlovewithandmarries. ThecouplesettleinCalgary,andthegivebirthtoa daughter,Diane,in1951.

1967-DianeMacLeanmeetsStanSakamoto.Stan,born in1950,isthesonofMitsueandHideoSakamoto.

RiflemanRalphMacLeanpictured inNewfoundlandin1940before beingsenttoHongKongwherehe wascapturedontheafternoonof ChristmasDay,1941.

“MitsueandRalphbecameinstantfriends.There wasanunspoken understandingbetweenthem.Theywerebothfartoopolite tostate it,toaddressit.Butthey felttheykneweachother.
