I have been heartened that Calgarians embraced this production by coming out in remarkable numbers, cheering, and standing nightly. I know the artists involved enjoyed their stay with us – praising our warm and supportive audiences. And now for something completely different; The Great Gatsby is one of the most respected novels of all time. This recent adaptation takes the best of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s writing and celebrates it in a highly theatrical version for the stage. Images, ideas, and figures collide in this examination of the perils of chasing the American Dream. I love presenting known stories in unknown theatrical productions. It’s quite a challenge to meet expectation and yet also bring our own particular points of view to the event. The Great Gatsby contains the opulence, excess, and abundance of the rich and famous in the 1920s – it requires a great deal from everyone involved to bring it to life. That said, it’s been a pleasure for us all to immerse ourselves in extraordinary ideas and a legendary time. Through all the smoky haze, the elegance, the music, and the laughter, The Great Gatsby remains a decadent and cautionary tale. Beware of all that glitters and glows. Welcome.

the great gatsby DIRECTOR'S NOTES The Declaration of Independence inscribed these inspiring words: “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness.” These words set into motion the creation of a land founded on some glorious principals. Yet French author Alexis de Tocqueville wrote: “In America I saw the freest and most enlightened men placed in the happiest circumstances the world affords; and it seemed to me a cloud habitually hung on their brow.” He went on: “The same equality that allows every citizen to conceive of these lofty hopes render all the citizens less able to realize them: it circumscribes their powers on every side, while it gives freer scope to their desires.” It was almost a year ago that Dennis Garnhum invited me to direct The Great Gatsby for Theatre Calgary. My first read brought me into a world of desperate people struggling to define themselves amidst the great changes taking place in the early 1920s: a giddy, abundant, and reckless bubble of time that seemed suspended in between the great wars. It is a world of stark contrasts: preposterous wealth and crushing poverty, wild parties and widespread loneliness…the old world was dying and the new was spiraling into being. It was a generation that took, as Edith Wharton described it in a letter to Fitzgerald, “a flying leap into the future.” In my second read I was caught up by the sweeping romance and love at the core of the story. Fitzgerald, who carried his own romantic wound from his first love, came to believe that such a yearning was an end in itself. He believed in the need to preserve a romantic state of mind where the imagination and the will are arrested – in a state or suspension – by an idealized concept of beauty and love. The loss creates an eternal striving, and keeps the world beautifully alive. Directing The Great Gatsby has been a process of falling in love with the writing of F. Scott Fitzgerald. This production is striving to uncover the complexities found in the book and, as much as possible, bring these complexities onto the stage: an impossible task but a thrilling one. Throughout the design process and conceptualization of this production the book was always nearby. Reading and re-reading Fitzgerald’s lines informed the staging, the lighting, the music selections, the actors’ choices beat by beat and the spirit of this production. The Great Gatsby is a story that explores how a fixed idea from our past can shape our present; as a Nation and as an individual. It is a story that reminds us that hope and hard working honesty can be lost without our care and attention as we get swept up in the material properties of this world. A favorite quote is from critic Marius Bewley: “The Great Gatsby is an exploration of the American Dream as it exists in a corrupt period, and it is an attempt to determine that concealed boundary that divides the reality from the illusions. The illusions seem more real than the reality itself. . . . they threaten to invade the whole of the picture. On the other hand, the reality is embodied in Gatsby: and as opposed to the hard tangible illusions, the reality is a thing of the spirit, a promise rather than the possession of a vision, a faith in the half–glimpsed, but hardly understood, possibilities of life.” Enjoy. F. Scott Fitzgerald and The Great Gatsby “It was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire.” – F. Scott Fitzgerald, Echoes of the Jazz Age Few writers have so closely reflected the spirit of an age in both their life and art as F. Scott Fitzgerald, author of The Great Gatsby. The 1920s was a time when youth, prosperity, freedom and an uncompromising belief in the American Dream changed the face of America. It was the dawn of a new morality: as prohibition turned many law-abiding citizens into law-breakers and street thugs became wealthy businessmen through organized crime. The Jazz Age (a term coined by Fitzgerald) was like one of Gatsby’s parties – filled with dancing, drinking, and fun – but it was also somehow false F. Scott Fitzgerald, 1921. and destined to end. Such it is in The Great Gatsby, and so it was in America and the life of F. Scott Fitzgerald. Throughout his life Fitzgerald struggled with the competing forces of his true loves: writing, his public persona and his wife Zelda. At an early age he showed exceptional skills as a writer, but his literary career was put on hold as the country entered World War I and Fitzgerald enlisted in the Portrait of Zelda Sayre Fitzgerald, army. While stationed outside 1919. Montgomery, Alabama, he fell in love with Zelda Sayre, an impetuous, beautiful and popular girl from elite Southern society. In spite of their romance, she refused to marry without promise of wealth and security. Fitzgerald moved to New York to seek his fortune, and ultimately returned to writing. The publication of his first novel, This Side of Paradise (1920), made the twenty-four-year-old author almost instantly famous, and a week later Zelda moved to New York and the couple were wed. The two quickly became celebrities and were widely recognized as the living picture of the times. Zelda’s beauty and image as “the original flapper,” Fitzgerald’s youthful good looks and their devil-may-care lifestyle secured their place in the social circles of New York’s rich and famous. 16

Fitzgerald’s success continued with popular short stories and his semi-autobiographical novel The Beautiful and the Damned. In 1922, the couple moved to Great Neck, Long Island: the inspiration behind the society and settings of The Great Gatsby. The area’s extravagant lifestyle and Fitzgerald’s increasing addiction to alcohol began to put a strain on both their finances and their marriage. The couple soon moved to Paris in hopes of finding greater tranquility. It was in Paris that Fitzgerald completed The Great Gatsby. At the start he wrote to his editor, “I want to write something new – something extraordinary and beautiful and simple + intricately patterned.” On receiving the first draft his editor responded, “I think the novel is a wonder...as for sheer writing, it’s astonishing.” After extensive revisions (during which Fitzgerald lobbied for several different titles including Trimalchio in West Egg), the novel was published in 1925. Critical reviews were predominantly favourable, but sales were disappointing. Fitzgerald’s alcoholism continued to worsen, and his marriage continued to deteriorate. The couple returned to America by which time Zelda’s Original 1925 Scribner’s edition dust jacket behaviour became designed by Francis Cugat. increasingly eccentric. She dedicated herself obsessively to ballet training and the dream of becoming a professional dancer. She suffered a nervous breakdown in 1930 and was admitted to a clinic in Switzerland where she was diagnosed with schizophrenia. From 1932 she spent the rest of her life in sanatoriums, with Fitzgerald often writing short stories to pay for her care. Fitzgerald’s fourth novel, Tender is the Night, published in 1934, was a commercial failure. Broke, drunk and in poor health, Fitzgerald went to write for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in Hollywood. The money was significant during the Depression, but not enough to revive the author’s health and literary dreams. F. Scott Fitzgerald died of a heart attack in 1940 at the age of forty-four. Zelda Fitzgerald died in a hospital fire in 1948 at the age of forty-eight. Their life together echoed the times in which they lived and the party ended with a crash at the end of the 1920s.


THE ROARING 20s

GET IN ON THE ACT AT THEATRE CALGARY

At the end of WWI the world had irrevocably changed. In the United States, the lasting impact of the war and other social reforms set the stage for the decade known as the “Roaring 20s.” Prohibition – The Eighteenth Amendment declared the production, transport and sale of “intoxicating liquors” illegal in the United States. On January 17, 1920, Prohibition went into effect and launched an era that would become renowned not for sobriety and civil reform, but for speakeasies, gangsters and bootlegging. In making liquor illegal, the government unwittingly made it more desirable, fashionable and remarkably profitable.

Women’s Rights – Suffrage groups were visibly active supporters of the war effort, and suffragists were seen as patriotic and valuable assets to the country. With more than four million men in military service during the war, millions of women entered the workforce, taking jobs traditionally held by men. It became increasingly hard for post-war America to be a global example of democratic freedom while denying half its citizens their democratic rights. In 1919, the Nineteenth Amendment was passed granting women the right to vote. The Great Migration – Wartime employment shortages encouraged hundreds of thousands of southern blacks to migrate north to cities like Chicago and New York, radically changing the racial demographics of the country. This Great Migration created a concentration of new, urban black communities generating an explosion of African-American culture through poetry, visual art, dance, and music. Jazz and blues music became the revolutionary soundtrack of the next decade, earning the name “the Jazz Age.” Booming Economy – Before the war, London was the centre of global economy; after the war the financial center was New York. America became the world’s strongest economic power. As Americans made and spent more money on consumer goods, stock prices soared. As the stock-market boomed, more people borrowed money to invest in order to maintain their new lifestyle. The stock market crash of 1929 ended a decade of conspicuous spending. Q: What inspired you join the

board at Theatre Calgary?

A: My first experience with the theatre was

as a second date with my now wife. I fell in love with my date and the theatre at the same time.

Q: Tell us a bit about what you do at

Mawer Investment Management Ltd.

A: I am a member of the firm’s management committee, which is responsible for setting and executing the firm’s strategic direction of managing money for both individuals and institutions.

Q: I know it’s the last thing we all want to think about, but what is the importance of Estate Planning? A: It gives a person the chance to have their final wishes documented in order to ensure the timely transfer of their assets to beneficiaries in a tax efficient manner.

Q: What is ‘Planned Giving’, and how

does it fit with Estate Planning?

A: Planned Giving means committing to a gift

at a future date either on death or while you are living. It’s a great way to start your commitment to important causes with an opportunity to see your gift in action while you are here to enjoy it.

Some conversations have to start with you – especially when you’re considering your personal legacy. Treasured family memories encompass a lifetime. Hopefully some of these memories were made over the years with us here at Theatre Calgary.
