This year’s production of A Christmas Carol marks a very special and personal cause for celebration. This season we celebrate Stephen Hair in his 20th year playing the role of Ebenezer Scrooge. To my knowledge, no other Canadian actor can claim such longevity in a role. If his performances were combined consecutively, without stopping, I estimate that Stephen would have presented the play daily for over two years of his life. It’s a remarkable achievement and something to cheer for.
So many exciting productions arrive in the New Year! Come check out BOOM as part of the High Performance Rodeo. You’ll enjoy seeing Rick Miller – one of the most innovative artists in Canada – as he debuts his newest work. Early in February we bring you our production of Major Barbara with American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. War and religion will be debated in a masterpiece of writing. You’ll be thrilled by the ideas.
It probably comes as no surprise that Stephen is one of the kindest, funniest human beings I know. That “Scroogey” behavior he portrays at the beginning of the play – it’s all an act! The transformation that he goes through in the story and his ability to open his heart as Scrooge sees the world anew on Christmas morning, well, that’s not so much acting as it is Stephen sharing his own heart. I continue to be convinced that this production of A Christmas Carol belongs more to the children and families of Calgary than it does to our company. You have encouraged it and allowed us to carry on this tradition, now in its 27th year. This year, join with me then as we celebrate your Scrooge – Mr. Stephen Hair. Happy Holidays.
In Memory of a Bright Spirit: Gerry Gerlinsky (1957 – 2013) This past May, all of us at Theatre Calgary were deeply saddened by the passing of one of our dear friends– Head Scenic Carpenter, Gerry Gerlinsky. His craftsmanship, joy and love of his work went into every beautiful set and piece of scenery built in our Scenery Shop during his many years with us.

Even though Gerry is no longer with us, his artistry is present in this production of A Christmas Carol. Our beautiful winter wonderland is part of his legacy along with so many memorable and amazing worlds on our stage. And so we celebrate all he brought to this production and remember his spirit in the joy it brings to us, and hopefully to you.

MAJOR BARBARA shaw’s sharpest social comedy February 11 to March 9, 2014 by George bernard Shaw • Directed by Dennis Garnhum • Starring Dean Paul Gibson • In co-Production with american conservatory Theater (San Francisco)
young Major barbara of the Salvation army is dedicated to saving souls. When she is reunited with her father, a millionaire arms manufacturer, it seems the two are destined to see the world through very different eyes. In this battle of good versus evil, finding a winning side is never as simple as it seems. Smart, funny and delightfully relevant. In this clever comedy, Shaw divides a family between two very powerful subjects: war and poverty. you’ll be dazzled by the ideas. We partner with a.c.t. in San Francisco, presenting americans and canadians together in this very british play. International, indeed! – Dennis

CHARLES DICKENS AND THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS “I have endeavoured in this Ghostly little book, to raise the Ghost of an Idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their houses pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it.” – Charles Dickens, The Preface to A Christmas Carol The “Ghost of an Idea” Dickens raised in A Christmas Carol did much more than haunt his readers’ houses. It rekindled the spirit of the holiday season at a time when English Christmas celebrations were on the decline and in danger of disappearing. In many ways, the traditions we enjoy today are a result of the images of cheer and fellowship created by Dickens. With the Industrial Revolution in full swing when A Christmas Carol was published, the rural family traditions of the holiday season were swiftly disappearing. A huge portion of the population had relocated to densely-populated urban cities and traditional family households and connections were disintegrating. Workers in factories and mills found their employers were unwilling to make allowances for Christmas celebrations, and child labour practices meant many children and parents were separated for the majority of the year. Widespread poverty and disease, and accompanying high death rates made holiday celebrations a distant memory to many families.
CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF STEPHEN HAIR AS SCROOGE I was lucky enough to be in Theatre Calgary’s A Christmas Carol a few times with Stephen Hair. The first time I walked into rehearsal with Stephen I was intimidated. I was a TV guy coming into a show that had this …. this… Scrooge. Years and years playing Scrooge. And even though Scrooge becomes this great guy at the end of the show, for 90% of it he’s not. He’s grumpy, mean, and not very talkative. So, most of the rehearsal time was spent in scenes with a grumpy, mean, not very talkative character. And Stephen never stopped working on the role. He did it backstage. He did it before shows. He did it every rehearsal. He’d work on one line, then the next… work on how he was going to walk in, how he was going to walk out. He’d read and re-read the script, getting his lines to fit and sound right. He was like a carpenter, trimming this board, sanding that edge, working… working... I remember thinking, “Stephen, you’ve done this before, what’s with all the work?” And then when the show started and the lights came up – magic. Whenever I need a kick to remind me to build something great, I think of Stephen: backstage, in his dressing room, in the hallways and on stage. Bravo Stephen. You are a craftsman – and you have built a tremendous place for Calgarians to come every year. Dave Kelly Television Host/Writer/Actor
Published on December 19, 1843, A Christmas Carol was an immediate sensation; the initial printing of 6000 copies sold out in days. The book instantly captured the hearts and imaginations of critics and general readers alike. In the words of poet Thomas Hood, “If Christmas, with its ancient and hospitable customs, its social and charitable observances, were in danger of decay, this is the book that would give them a new lease.” By the end of his lifetime Dickens was so connected to the spirit of the holidays that upon news of his death in 1870, a costermonger’s girl in London was heard to exclaim, “Mr. Dickens dead? Then will Father Christmas die too?”

Ebenezer Scrooge, and his journey of redemption continues to reinforce the values of generosity, charity, and goodwill towards mankind in hearts and minds across the globe. In writing A Christmas Carol, Charles Dickens revealed the core of our holiday spirit in the simplest of phrases — “God bless us, every one.”

Congratulations to Stephen Hair for 20 years as Scrooge! Your Ebenezer has been mean, bitter, broken and sometimes even silly. But the compassion in YOUR heart, Stephen, has always helped him evolve into the kind of person we all want to be: the kind of person who can take a simple idea to collect loonies and toonies, and end up feeding thousands of needy people. You’ve done Charles Dickens proud! On behalf of my entire family (including Kandi, Liam and Laura), thank you for letting us join you on such a powerful journey for so many of your 20 years.

STEPHEN HAIR Imagine if you will, a person held in pose as they cross into the threshold of a never before experienced environment. A pose that combines the rapture of achievement with the disgust that such an experience, let alone place, must exist at all. This was Stephen Hair when he first entered the Calgary Food Bank warehouse: the hundreds of volunteers, the thousands of kilograms of food being sorted and shared, and the hope that was being given to Calgarians in one of their greatest hours of need. Of course Stephen was aware of the need, having shared his life with many people in need, but the look on his face told a story: one of knowing that others cared as much as he did for family, friends and community. Knowing that people would have the food they needed mixed with disappointment that the need had pushed the scale of support so large. He could be a champion to bring that world into the light and make it part of the past. Stephen shows his passion and drive to be a leader both on and off the stage. His actions, as he has commented, are just what anyone should do when experiencing such community disaster. He speaks from his heart and dedicates his energy to making change happen so we will all have food. James McAra CEO, Calgary Food Bank

Vice President, Stuart Olson Dominion Construction Limited. Photo by Jeff Yee, Raindrop Images.
Q
Q: How long has Stuart Olson
Dominion been active in western Canada?
A: For over 74 years as Stuart Olson
and since 2010 as Stuart Olson Dominion Construction Limited (SODCL) a publicly traded company.
Q: How long have you been with Stuart Olson Dominion (SOD)? A: Since 2001. I started as a client/architect
liaison for the Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver offices of Stuart Olson and am now Vice President Business Development for SODCL offices across Canada.
Q: What are some of SODCL’s
recent Alberta projects, and those currently underway?
A: Some projects in Calgary include the Bow Valley College expansion; LDS Temple in Rocky Ridge; Peter Lougheed hospital expansion; the $512M Edmonton Remand Centre; and hospitals in Edson, Medicine Hat & Lethbridge. SODCL will also be providing construction management services for Calgary’s New Central Library. Q: How long has SODCL been a partner with Theatre Calgary (TC)? A: Four years. Q: Can you outline the value and
impact of SODCL's partnership with TC?
Q: How does your partnership with TC support SODCL’s business development & client relations initiatives? A: Our partnership with TC lets our clients see a different side of us as a builder. Our partnership shows that we are a general contractor with a deep interest in the arts. This provides another dimension to our image in the community. Q: What responses have you received from guests that attended one of SODCL’s client evenings?
Become a Theatre Calgary Corporate Partner Theatre Calgary provides innovative business development/client relations partnerships, framed by the value proposition of a “business to business” model. Our partners make a financial investment in Theatre Calgary, and the Return on Investment provides a unique and unforgettable, couples based experience, to celebrate core business and stakeholder relationships. The value and impact of “front of line” partnership deliverables includes the following: •
Premiere location performance tickets and private reception space
•
Corporate brand positioning throughout Theatre Calgary
•
Ads in Theatre Calgary programmes, which reach over 16,000 patrons for each production

opportunity to interact with clients outside of the usual business environment. An evening at TC takes our client relationships to a different level because clients and spouses are involved.
Q: As a Theatre Calgary board
member, how would you describe the Return on Investment in SODCL’s partnership with TC?
A: Partnership ROI is “priceless” and not
measured in dollars. We find that evenings at TC are attended by more senior members of our client firms. Feedback from our guests focuses on a memorable evening celebrating business relationships and the value of “friendship building” which is second to none. We have an opportunity to show our clients another side of SODCL, that we are connected to our community through the arts. This is very significant.
Q: Would you recommend partnership with Theatre Calgary to other companies?
Terry Roberts: (403) 294-7419 troberts@theatrecalgary.com Ron Peters: (403) 294-7440 Ext.1020 rpeters@theatrecalgary.com Rose Syrgiannis: (403) 294-7440 Ext.1054; rsyrgiannis@theatrecalgary.com
A: Absolutely. This is a marvelous way to connect with our clients and support one of Calgary’s cultural leaders. Q: Is there anything else you would like to share regarding your Theatre Calgary partnership? A: What I especially like is TC’s commitment to partnership – continually refreshing our relationship and looking for new ways to enhance the “front of line” experience for our clients and our employees. P154662
A: The value and impact is two-fold: it’s important for us as a construction management company to have an opportunity to reach out to the arts
community in Calgary. Many of our clients are architects and developers and an evening at TC provides an opportunity to mingle as a team and celebrate successful projects together. This means a lot to our clients and our employees.
