WELCOME It is surprising to me that this beloved movie musical took so long to emerge on the Broadway stage. What a thrill now that it has finally arrived, and in a very theatrically fulfilling way. Some of the songs from the movie have been replaced with entirely new ones ("Practically Perfect" for example) and an entirely new script has been created and moulded around these iconic songs. The heart of our story remains the deliciously disruptive Mary Poppins. And who wouldn't wish for a nanny to fly in and clean house (figuratively and literally) to make it all shipshape. The beloved Mary Poppins knows her place and the challenge before her: reunite this family and rekindle their love. We've created this production with the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton. Sharing the tasks to bring it to the stage has been nothing short of magic: one company building the sets, another one building the costumes, etc. To conduct this epic undertaking (yes, it is as complicated and detailed as it looks) we have brought in a creative team from far and wide. I calculate that it has taken over 150 people to bring together our production. There really are many, many magical Mary Poppinses playing their part, and hopefully filling you and your family with joy and love.

DENNIS GARNHUM Artistic Director

mary poppins DIRECTOR'S NOTES I am writing these notes on the evening following our first rehearsal for Mary Poppins. It was a very exciting day. Instead of the usual readthrough and sing-through of the musical, our designers and I talked the cast through the production—explaining the look of each setting and each character, and how each scene contributes to the beautiful story that we are telling. Mary Poppins is, of course, a story about family, and the need all children and husbands and wives have for love within their family. Mary arrives to mend a broken—or what we now call a dysfunctional—family. Not that it would be unusual in 1907 London, for parents who could Blythe Wilson, Andrew MacDonald-Smith afford a nanny, to see their children for as little as 15 minutes a day. But whether or not it’s the social norm, it doesn't make it right. It certainly won’t suffice for Jane and Michael Banks, hence the need for this mystical, and exceedingly practical, nanny. This morning I read to the cast an excerpt from a biography of P.L. Travers, the creator of Mary Poppins. It included the following:

“Mary takes the Banks children on many adventures to visit her most peculiar friends and relations. It is the contrast between these adventures in Fairyland, or Wonderland, or Neverland, and the reality of life in Cherry Tree Lane and its environs that gives the Mary Poppins stories their special charm. In the real world live forlorn and rather lonely figures…in the unreal world live happier folk.” P.L. Travers spent much of her life as a forlorn and lonely figure. May Mary Poppins bring all of us some of the joy and relief she brought to her author and to the countless children who need to know that their parents love them—even when they forget to show them.

UP NEXT Next season expect outrageous laughter, heartbreaking tears, and an ever-expanding season. We kick it all off in September with the hilarious One Man, Two Guvnors. Critics call it "the funniest play on the planet." I can't think of a better way to begin.

Mount Royal University created a unique professional performing opportunity for graduating drama students in Alberta with Shakespeare in the Park. Theatre Calgary is proud to continue that tradition with Shakespeare by the Bow at Prince’s Island Park this summer. Spend a summer’s evening in the park and laugh at one of Shakespeare’s silliest plays. When two sets of twins, separated at birth, find themselves in the same city, a series of wild mishaps ensue! Starring a company of Alberta’s up-and-coming actors, every performance is pay-what-you-will. Last summer we made national news as our production was washed away due to the floods. It took all of our efforts but the show went on. Now we’re back in beautiful Prince’s Island Park and this year we are more than ready to laugh with one of the Bard’s most delightful comedies. – Dennis Garnhum, Artistic Director

Goofy slapstick and silliness combined with music provided by a 1960s boy-band to get you in the spirit—that’s the way to kick off a season. – Dennis

P. L. TRAVERS AND MARY POPPINS

imagination have free rein and blended elements of myth and fairy tales into her portrait of an everyday family in London.

P. L. Travers was born in Australia in 1899 as Helen Lyndon Goff, but she never thought that the place or the name suited her well. Her father, Travers Goff, was a struggling bank manager who was demoted at least once. An Irish emigrant, he raised his daughter on the poetry of William Butler Yeats and romantic stories of his homeland. He died when she was seven.

Buoyed by the success of her books, Travers, who never married, adopted a son through friends in Ireland and set up house in a farm village south of London. During the bombings of World War II, she moved temporarily to New York, where she was contacted by Walt Disney.

The young Helen Goff had a lonely childhood after her father’s death and developed an extensive fantasy life. She enjoyed books, played with imaginary friends, and spent hours out in the yard constructing tiny model parks out of flowers and twigs. As a teenager, she acted out in one of the few ways available to a middle-class young woman of her era: she joined the theatre. After performing in school pantomimes, she turned professional using the stage name Pamela Lyndon Travers. In her early twenties, she performed with a travelling Shakespeare company that toured across Australia and New Zealand. While on tour, she began to develop her voice as a writer, and her florid poetry caught the eye of literary magazines.

Disney’s daughter loved the Mary Poppins books, and he pursued the film rights for nearly two decades. Travers was reluctant to give them up, since she thought Disney’s style was better suited to cartoon animals than serious writing. In the early 1960s, after Disney had adapted British children’s classics such as Alice in Wonderland and Peter Pan, Travers finally agreed. Travers insisted that the film be live-action (not animated) and that the story should stay set in London. Beyond that, her creative power over the film was limited (despite the series of meetings in Los Angeles depicted in the recent film Saving Mr. Banks). She even had to finagle herself an invitation to the film’s premiere. While Travers liked Julie Andrews in the title role, she despised the animated sequences and felt that Mr. Banks had been transformed from a disappointed dreamer—not unlike her own father—into a curmudgeon. But Travers benefited greatly from the film, which led a new generation of young readers to her books and made her wealthy for the rest of her life.

When she was approached for the rights to create Pamela Lyndon Travers as Titania in an Australian By the age of 24, Travers production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, 1924. the stage musical decades later, Travers had two felt that she had outgrown stipulations: First, no one who worked on the Australia and set sail on a Disney movie could be directly involved. Second, the creative seven-week voyage to London with little more than a few team must be British. As a result, the new script for the musical references and the address of distant relatives. Bustling London (written by Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes) draws its didn’t live up to her romantic expectations, but she soon inspiration straight from Travers’ books and uses a combination found a reasonably successful and satisfying life. She wrote of the well-loved songs from the classic film and brand new theatre reviews and an Australian newspaper column about her numbers written for the stage. adventures in the big city. Most importantly to her, Travers found her way into an Irish literary circle that included some of her childhood idols: Yeats and the poet George William Russell (also known as AE). Russell ran a small Irish literary journal and took Travers under his wing, publishing many of her poems and encouraging her to trust her fantastical imagination. To pay the steamship fare for a visit from her mother, Travers began writing short stories for popular magazines under the pen name P. L. Travers. Mary Poppins made her first appearance in a 1926 short story, along with the Banks family and a sidewalk screever named Bert. The book Mary Poppins was published in 1934. Following Russell’s advice, she let her 18

“The world is full of magic things, patiently waiting for our senses to grow sharper.” - W.B. Yeats

THE MARY POPPINS BOOKS P. L. Travers was a voracious reader as a child, and her Mary Poppins books are part of a long tradition of fantastical British children’s literature that includes Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland (1865) and J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan (1904). As Travers’ biographer Valerie Lawson writes, “Mary Poppins is a nanny from Wonderland or Neverland, who strolls along the riverbank of The Wind in the Willows or through the Hundred Acre Wood of Winnie-the-Pooh.” Travers wrote eight Mary Poppins books in total, including an alphabet book and a recipe collection: Mary Poppins (1934) Mary Poppins Comes Back (1935) Mary Poppins Opens the Door (1943) Mary Poppins in the Park (1952) Mary Poppins from A to Z (1962) Mary Poppins in the Kitchen (1975) Mary Poppins in Cherry Tree Lane (1982) Mary Poppins and the House Next Door (1988) The series focuses on Mary Poppins’ relationship with the Banks family, and even though the books were written in six different decades, the characters stay the same age throughout. The first three books follow a familiar pattern: Mary Poppins arrives just when the Banks family needs her most, takes the children on extraordinary adventures, and then disappears mysteriously when her work is done. While the Disney movie was inspired mainly by the first book (and took plenty of creative liberties), the stage musical draws its characters and events from the entire series.

WHY ARE CHIMNEY SWEEPS LUCKY? No one really knows for sure why chimney sweeps are thought to bring good luck, especially since the job itself was rather dangerous. According to a tale that dates back to the 18th century, an unknown London chimney sweep once grabbed the reins of a panicked horse and saved its rider’s life, before vanishing into the streets without a trace. That rider just happened to be King George II. Since he didn’t have the chance to thank the sweep, the lucky king declared that all chimney sweeps should be treated with honour and respect. Exact customs about sweep’s luck vary from place to place: good luck can come from shaking a sweep’s hand, touching his clothing, or simply walking through his shadow. One common tradition says that it’s good luck to have a sweep attend a wedding and kiss the bride. Presentday chimney sweeps (even in Calgary) can be hired to come to weddings in full nineteenth-century costume and bring good fortune to the happy couple.

NANNIES, COOKS, AND OTHER SERVANTS In early twentieth-century London, domestic servants were an important sign of a family’s social status. Even middleclass families such as the Bankses, who live in “the smallest house in the lane” according to Travers, kept a small retinue of live-in servants. Mary Poppins is hired as the nanny for the Banks children. The nanny takes care of the family’s children throughout the day and is in charge of the nursery, the part of the house where the children ate, played, and slept. She would typically live in an adjoining room. Mrs. Brill is the household’s cook, and also does the work of a maid. In a wealthier household, there could have been three or more other servants to help with her tasks. Robertson Ay is the family’s odd-jobs man. His tasks would include shining shoes and keeping the lawn in order.

A postcard by artist Ernest Ibbetson shows nannies and children leaving London’s Hyde Park, 1910.

The brothers’ first musical collaboration took place in 1950, and during that decade they wrote hit rock songs including Kitty Wells’ “Things I Might Have Been,” Johnny Burnette’s “You’re Sixteen,” and exMouseketeer Annett Funicello’s “Tall Paul.” The latter garnered the attention of Walt Disney, who invited both Richard and Robert to be the exclusive staff writers for the Disney studios.

J U L I A N F E L LO W E S Book Julian Fellowes is the Emmy Award-winning writer and creator of Downton Abbey and the winner of the 2001 Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Gosford Park. He also wrote the screenplays for Vanity Fair and The Young Victoria. He is the bestselling author of Snobs and Past Imperfect. His other works include The Curious Adventure of the Abandoned Toys and the book for the Disney stage musical of Mary Poppins. As an actor, his roles include Lord Kilwillie in the BBC Television series Monarch of Glen and the 2nd Duke of Richmond in Aristocrats, as well as appearances in the films Shadowlands, Damage, and Tomorrow Never Dies. He lives in London and Dorset, England.

CAMERON MACKINTOSH Producer From the age of eight when Cameron Mackintosh was taken to a matinee of Julian Slade's musical Salad Days he has never wanted to be anything other than a producer of musicals. Starting off as a stagehand at London's Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, he later became an acting ASM on the national tour of Oliver! and by the age of twenty he started to realize his dream. His first productions were small scale tours but within a very short time he had produced his first musical, Anything Goes, which opened out of town, transferred to the Saville Theatre in London's West End and closed after a fortnight. Undeterred, Cameron returned to his initial musical inspiration and revived Salad Days. In 1973 he produced his first original musical The Card with music by Tony Hatch and Jackie Trent, and a book by Keith Waterhouse and Willis Hall. The cast included Jim Dale, Millicent Martin and Joan Hickson and ran for six months at the Queen's Theatre. During the 1970's he continued to produce numerous tours, notably Godspell, and in 1976 he had his first major international success with the musical revue celebrating the wit and lyrical genius of Stephen Sondheim, Side by Side by Sondheim which moved from the Mermaid Theatre to the Wyndham's Theatre and subsequently transferred with the same cast to New York. This was followed by a hugely successful revival of the original production of Oliver! which spawned an innovative collaboration with the Arts Council of Great Britain and successful productions of two of the all time great musicals My Fair Lady and Oklahoma! In 1980 Cameron collaborated with American satirist Tom Lehrer on a revue of his songs entitled Tomfoolery and that same year Andrew Lloyd Webber suggested that they should work together. Their first joint venture was Cats which opened at the New London Theatre in May 1981, and on the 29th January 1996 it became the longest running musical in the

West End or on Broadway. The phenomenal success of this musical has been repeated throughout the world and opened an era of international musical productions undreamed of by previous generations. Following Cats came Song and Dance, Little Shop of Horrors, Blondel and Abbacadabra, before the next milestone production in 1985 with Les Miserables and Cameron's brilliantly successful collaboration with the writing team of Alain Boublil and ClaudeMichel Schönberg. Whilst maintaining an ever expanding number of international productions of Cats and Les Miserables, Cameron Mackintosh joined with Andrew Lloyd Webber again to produce The Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's Theatre, London in 1986, and in 1987 he produced Stephen Sondheim and James Goldman's Follies at the Shaftesbury Theatre. In 1989 he produced the second epic BoublilSchönberg musical, Miss Saigon at the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane, where it broke the record for the longest running musical in that illustrious home of the musical. Miss Saigon celebrated its 10th Anniversary on 20th September 1999, becoming the fourth production of Cameron's to continue running for over 10 years, and toured the UK opening in Manchester in June 2000. In 1990 Cameron transferred Five Guys Named Moe for a record-breaking run at London's Lyric Theatre which subsequently transferred to Broadway. This hugely enjoyable show has joined the "international stable" and productions are staged worldwide. Then in 1993, he enticed Julie Andrews back to the New York stage (after a 30 year absence) in the Sondheim review Putting It Together. In December 1994, Cameron opened a record-breaking new production of Oliver! at the Palladium Theatre in London which played to packed houses for three and a half years. After a very successful UK tour, the production transferred to Toronto where it opened in November 1999. Cameron again collaborated with Boublil and Schönberg in 1996 to produce their third major musical Martin Guerre which opened at the Prince Edward Theatre in London and ran for 700 performances. Martin Guerre won the Lawrence Olivier Award for Best Musical. In the fall of 1998, a completely new production of this show was staged at the West Yorkshire Playhouse and subsequently toured the UK and the US. In 1998 Cameron celebrated thirty years as a musical producer with a special evening presentation of Hey Mr. Producer! in the presence of Her Majesty the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh. It featured excerpts from many of his productions and was subsequently released on video and CD. After the celebration looking back, Cameron continued to move forward on Broadway with a 1998 production of Matthew Bourne's Swan Lake and another Broadway production of Putting it Together starring Carol Burnett in 1999. Meanwhile, in London he was at work on the musical adaptation of The Witches of Eastwick, with music by Dana Rowe and lyrics by John Dempsey. It opened in July of 2000 and ran for more than 700 performances. In March 2001 Cameron presented a new production of My Fair Lady in association with the Royal National Theatre starring Jonathan Pryce as Professor Higgins. It won 5 Olivier Awards including Best Musical and subsequently toured the U.K. and the U.S. It is scheduled to open on Broadway in the 2010/2011 season.

Working with Disney, Cameron was able to fulfill a long-held desire to produce a stage musical of Mary Poppins in 2004. The production is based on the books by Pamela Travers and the Disney film that starred Julie Andrews. It subsequently opened on Broadway in the fall of 2006 where it won two Drama Desk Awards and a Tony Award. A second American company opened a U.S. tour in Chicago in spring 2009, and will be followed by productions in Amsterdam and Sydney. The fall of 2006 also saw the return of Les Miserables to Broadway in a special limited engagement, coinciding with the 21st anniversary of the show in London (now the longest running musical in West End or Broadway history). His latest production of Oliver! is currently breaking Box Office records all over again at London's Theatre Royal Drury Lane and he is currently preparing films of My Fair Lady, Les Misérables and Miss Saigon. Cameron inaugurated the Cameron Mackintosh Chair of Contemporary Theatre at Oxford University in 1990, in recognition of which he was made an Honorary Fellow Member of the Court of Benefactors of St. Catherine's College. In 1992 he was presented with the Richard Rodgers Award for excellence in Musical Theater. His company received the 1995 Queen's Award for Export Achievement and he was knighted in the 1996 New Year's Honours for his services to the British Theatre. In 1998 Cameron was awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Drama from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow. Cameron Mackintosh is thrilled to be what he has always wanted to be; a producer of musicals.

H

Here’s Your Cue

Byron Allen played Oberon and Theseus in A Midsummer Night’s Dream for Shakespeare in the Park (SITP) 2012. He will be playing Alex in Theatre Calgary’s production of Liberation Days next season.

Q

Q: When did you decide to be an actor? A: While in high school I took a drama

course thinking it would be easy credits, and discovered that I really enjoyed acting. Through this class, my teacher reinforced the idea that, no matter who it is, everyone has the potential to tell a great story. We’re all of us storytellers and that idea stuck with me.

I never experienced before. For instance, the weather would affect what I was doing. There were times I had to run on slippery wet grass, or have to keep acting in extreme heat. There would be squirrels living in the trees that made up part of our set and people would often ride their bikes by or through our show. So many things could have happened but I had to stay focused, adapt and move forward.

Q: How helpful was working with professional artists? A: Working with professional artists equipped me with tools that I still use to improve my skills as an actor. For instance, I learned all about clowning, which was something I never did before. Clowning is an exercise that has the student put on a clown’s nose; the student then has to develop a character without being allowed to speak! The other tool I frequently use is all about the importance of harnessing one’s energy. I learned that if someone has a limitless supply of energy, that’s great, but it has to be focused in order to be effective. If it’s all over the place, the energy is wasted.

Q: How would you describe your experience at Shakespeare in the Park (SITP)?

Q: Do you think that being a part of SITP made a difference in your career?

A: Doing A Midsummer Night's Dream was

I would have been without SITP. I met actress and director Rebecca Northan (Blind Date, Legend Has It) with whom I worked again after A Midsummer Night's Dream. While working with Rebecca I met Adrian Young, a fight director. I connected with him right away because he approaches his work in a way that really makes sense to me. I am now learning from him and working towards becoming a fight director in addition to acting. If all of those circumstances hadn't lined up, I wouldn't have had the opportunities that led me to where I am today. I would probably be working at a coffee shop without SITP.

physically demanding. The exertion of having to sprint across the field in the heat, while maneuvering around trees to make your exit so the rest of the players can keep performing is a massive undertaking. It's something you can easily laugh off when talking about it safely in the rehearsal hall, but once you're in the park and in front of a crowd of people, it’s exhausting! It was sweaty work, but a lot of fun and I think we shaved our 100 meter sprint to about twelve seconds.

Q: What is the most important lesson you learned at SITP? A: I learned to become very adaptable.

SITP was very enlightening because it was a crash course in everything. It was the first opportunity I had to act in a professional setting with a professional director, so I had to learn how to work within that structure. At Prince’s Island Park we dealt with things that

A: I am definitely on a different trajectory than

Q: Would you recommend this program to other drama students and why? A: Absolutely I would, no questions asked. SITP was an unparalleled learning experience, an intensive crash course and such an amazing opportunity in such a positive and supportive environment that I can't help but feel privileged.

Q & A WITH BYRON ALLEN
