ARTS AT YOUR FINGERTIPS. calgaryherald.com

I’ve been a fan of musicals from a very early age. As a kid, I remember my Mom introducing me to the great movie-musicals of the 40s and 50s, and watching enrapt as lovers would glide effortlessly across a dance floor, or as men and women would suddenly start singing and tap dancing in the most unlikely places. Somehow it made sense. When the feeling hit and the music soared, you just had to sing and dance! I suspect these old moviemusicals have a lot to do with why I ended up following a life in the theatre – a place where this possibility exists and still makes perfect sense. When I first encountered Crazy for You, I was transported back to the joy I’d found in those early musicals. The glorious music of George and Ira Gershwin, combined with Ken Ludwig’s imagination, create a world where cowboys and showgirls find romance and happiness together through song, dance, and the rejuvenating power of the theatre. Thank you to our friends at the Citadel Theatre for being our partners on this delightful journey from New York to Deadrock, in Edmonton and in Calgary. As we close our 2016-17 season, we now look forward to our upcoming 50th Anniversary season and beyond. It is my very great pleasure to welcome Stafford Arima as Theatre Calgary’s new Artistic Director. With his artistic vision and leadership, we can look forward to a thrilling future and many more wonderful theatre experiences to come. Welcome Stafford! And welcome everyone to Crazy for You. SHARI WATTLING Interim Artistic Director

INTRODUCING

STAFFORD ARIMA Photo by Jeff Yee.

Theatre Calgary is thrilled to introduce our new Artistic Director, Stafford Arima. Stafford becomes the 12th Artistic Director in our 49-year history. Born and raised in Toronto, Stafford has thrived in the New York theatre scene for nearly 20 years, and he became the first Asian Canadian to direct a musical on Broadway when Allegiance opened on November 8, 2015 at the Longacre Theatre, starring George Takei and Lea Salonga. He was also nominated for an Olivier Award for his direction of 2004’s West End premiere of the musical, Ragtime, and his production received 8 nominations including Best Musical. Some of his other directing credits include productions of Altar Boyz, Carrie (MCC Theater), The Secret Garden - In Concert (Lincoln Center), Two Class Acts (The Flea Theater), The Tin Pan Alley Rag (Roundabout Theatre Company), Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living In Paris (Stratford Festival), Abyssinia (Goodspeed Musicals) A Tribute to Sondheim (Boston Pops), and Guys and Dolls (Paper Mill Playhouse). Arima has also shepherded new musical development at the Toronto Fringe Festival, New York Musical Theatre Festival, National Alliance for Musical Theatre, Williamstown Theatre Festival, New York Stage and Film, and the SPF Festival. He is a graduate of York University, where he was the recipient of the Dean’s Prize for Excellence in Creative Work. Stafford also serves as Artistic Advisor for the Broadway Dreams Foundation, and is an Adjunct Professor at UC Davis. “It is with great honour and immeasurable excitement that I begin this new adventure as artistic director at Theatre Calgary. This journey to Calgary is a homecoming for me. After two decades based in New York City, my return to Canada gives me immense pride. I am eager to participate in Calgary’s fervent artistic spirit, and continue the tradition of bold storytelling and impactful theatre that moves, touches, and inspires this city’s audiences. I am thrilled to oversee Interim Artistic Director Shari Wattling’s recently announced season marking our 50th Anniversary, and partner with the board of directors, and the entire staff and crew, to present these eclectic works to our audiences. I am anxious to begin the process of guiding the company through its next phase of growth. Our theatre will forever be a home that reflects the communities, the country, and the world we live in – a diverse, complex, stimulating world.” - Stafford Arima We ask you to join us in welcoming Stafford to Theatre Calgary!

Thank you for attending today's performance of Crazy for You. By purchasing your ticket, you are confirming that arts and culture play a role in your life. Theatre Calgary is one of Calgary Arts Development’s designated Cornerstone organizations. The Cornerstone Program provides stable investment in arts organizations that have an integral role in sustaining Calgary’s overall arts ecosystem: Theatre Calgary is recognized as a Cornerstone due to our contribution to the performing arts sector, as well as our status as a not-for-profit organization that enriches the artistic and creative vibrancy of this city. If you have participated in a local arts event, there is a chance that you have experienced one of the 10 Cornerstone organizations. Theatre Calgary proudly stands together with our fellow Cornerstone organizations to a city that is exciting, curious and inspiring. We contribute towards a diversified economy and our work strengthens the social fabric of this city. But we do this on a shoestring year, after year, after year. In the past 8 years, Cornerstone organizations have seen rising operational costs, faced significant rental increases, and watched corporate sponsorships plummet. Tough economic conditions have resulted in a drastic drop in private contributions and overall corporate support. On top of this, our Cornerstones have faced an 8 year freeze in municipal investment. In fact, Calgary's Cornerstones currently receive the lowest percentage of municipal support across the entire country. Compared to an average of 4.6 per cent in Winnipeg, 5.6 percent in Toronto, 7.5 percent in Vancouver and 9.8 percent in Edmonton, Calgary's average investment of 3.5 percent pales in comparison. For Theatre Calgary specifically, our annual investment from the city represents a mere 2.8 per cent of our annual operating budget and has been declining since 1998; despite the fact that our work has grown and our city's population increased. Right now, all of Calgary's Cornerstones are hurting and while we continue to find new ways to serve young audiences, add value to our communities, and provide support to emerging professionals, we need your help and we need the city's help. If you enjoyed today's performance; if your day was made brighter with a little song and dance; and if you are proud to have such world-class talent in your city, we humbly ask you to consider making a donation today. Any amount is greatly appreciated. We also encourage you to ask your mayoral candidates and councillors to support a more appropriate investment in our industry that is on par with our colleagues across the country. Now more than ever in our knowledge-based economy, it is widely known that the arts contribute to the success, vibrancy, and vitality of our future. We need each other. Once again, on behalf of all Cornerstones, Theatre Calgary thanks you for being here today, for your support, and for choosing to embrace the arts as a part of your life in Calgary. COLLEEN A. DIRECTOR’S NOTES Sitting in the audience watching the original Toronto production of Crazy for You actually altered the course of my life and career, if you can believe it. At the time, I was studying biology and jazz music in Vancouver, not at all clear about which direction I was heading. As I sat in the dark, it struck me quite viscerally that I already possessed the skill sets I was witnessing. I remember thinking, “I can do all that!” I moved to Toronto the following year and embarked on a career in theatre. I have watched and felt so many audiences be transformed by the power of tap dancing. Its rhythmic force can change the emotional temperature in a room. To feel a collective, palpable excitement and happiness spill out of a group like that is wild every time it happens. I’ve always thought that it might be connected to the rhythmic sounds we hear while we are still in our mothers’ bellies ... who knows? But it is very real, and I believe it has enormous value. It’s difficult to be stressed out about your life, or the state of American politics, for that matter, when there are 20 people tap dancing in front of you. And George and Ira Gershwin? I mean, come on!!! They created melodies and lyrics that have simply refused to fade over time. Their music will stay with you, not because they are annoying earworms, but because they are beautifully written and incredibly satisfying to sing and listen to. My desire and intention in directing and choreographing this show is not to subvert it in any way, or to make fun of the style of comedy it embraces; rather to pay homage to the extraordinary musicals of the 1930s and to bring what we have learned since into the mix. Reading the news and keeping abreast of global politics these days can be frightening and very dark, and my great desire is that you be surrounded and embraced by warmth, light, and laughter for the next few hours. The light is still there, we just need to make the choice to be in it. DAYNA TEKATCH Director

THE GERSHWINS

by Jenna Turk, Artistic Associate Brothers George and Ira Gershwin were born just before the turn of the 20th century, and together they created some of the most famous musical numbers in American music history, like: “I Got Rhythm,” “Embraceable You,” and “Someone to Watch Over Me.” Older brother Ira was the creator in the family and his lyrics helped win the musical, Of Thee I Sing, the first Pulitzer Prize ever for a piece of musical theatre. He lived a long life, happily married for 57 years, writing for both the stage and screen, before passing away at the age of 86. His younger brother, George, however wasn’t quite so fortunate. A songwriter and pianist, George is often thought to have been the more promising of the two, but unfortunately, his life was cut short by a malignant brain tumor at the age of 38. Together George and Ira were surely successful having collaborated on more than a dozen scores including musicals Strike Up the Band, Let ‘Em Eat Cake, and Porgy and Bess, but George’s most famous works were actually done on his own. With his jazzy Tin Pan Alley influenced style, his orchestral compositions remain some of the most world-renowned like: “Rhapsody in Blue” and “An American in Paris.” Throughout their careers Ira had always managed his brother’s affairs, and after George’s death he continued to do so, advocating for the maintenance of his legacy. His work paid off as the George and Ira Gershwin Collection is now housed in the Library of Congress. Not

only does the Gershwins’ music live on, but their name holds incredible weight both in the musical theatre playbook and in the classical music canon.

THE FANTASTIC FOLLIES The singing and dancing showgirls of “Zangler’s Follies” featured in Crazy for You bring real razzle dazzle rhythm to a true cowpoke musical. Inspired by the Ziegfeld Follies, these chorus girls hold an iconic place in the world of show business. First mounted in 1907, the Ziegfeld Follies took their inspiration from a Parisian cabaret music hall, the Folies Bergère. Incredibly popular during the Belle Époque, the Folies Bergère was famous for offering light entertainment with a mix of popular songs, comic operettas, and gymnastics. However, it was most legendary for its titillating content – and its beautiful women (venerably immortalized by Édouard Manet in his painting, A Bar at the FoliesBergère). Elaborate costumes were worn and then unworn to the delight of those that frequented the cabaret. Broadway impresario Florenz Ziegler Jr. was charmed by the Folies Bergère and

in search of an inexpensive summer money-maker, he decided to produce his first revue in New York City called Follies of 1907. A smash hit, Ziegfeld put his name in the title renaming the show Ziegfeld’s Follies and sold it as the highlight of the Broadway season. Like the showgirls of the Folies Bergère, Ziegfeld made the beauty of his dancing choristers a priority. “Ziegfeld Girls” were personally chosen by Mr. Ziegfeld, were dressed in elaborate costumes, and were expected to perform intricate choreography in perfect synchronization. Being a “Ziegfeld Girl” gave young aspiring starlets another route to fame, as they were not only beautiful, but talented. The press gossiped about the women, and it became sport to try to guess which fresh ingénue was biding their time before becoming the next big star. Notable showgirls included: Barbara Stanwyck, Gypsy Rose Lee, and Josephine Baker. In fact, all those working on Ziegfeld’s Follies were the best in the business (this was no

Édouard Manet’s painting, A Bar at the Folies-Bergère

small-time venture) and that included music by Mr. George Gershwin. Ziegfeld’s Follies ran in New York City through to 1931, with renewals in 1932 and 1936, but its legacy lives on in the spectacle it celebrated. Broadway was certainly influenced by its opulence as well as Ziegfeld’s penchant for extravagance. Crazy for You is truly an ode to the joy that can be found in banding together to put on a show, with much of the legwork being done by the brilliant Follies singing and dancing all the way from New York City to Deadrock, Nevada.

GEORGE GERSHWIN was born in Brooklyn on September 26, 1898, and began his musical training when he was 13. At 16 he quit high school to work as a “song plugger” for a music publisher, and soon he was writing songs himself. “Swanee,” as introduced by Al Jolson, brought George his first real fame and led to his writing a succession of 22 musical comedies, most with his older brother, Ira. The Gershwins’ shows include Lady Be Good; Oh, Kay!; Strike Up The Band; Girl Crazy; and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Of Thee I Sing. From his early career George had ambitions to compose serious music. These ambitions were realized in some of his masterpieces, among them “Rhapsody In Blue,” “Concerto In F,” “An American In Paris” and “Second Rhapsody.” In the late ‘20s George became fascinated by the DuBose Heyward novel Porgy, recognizing it as a perfect vehicle for opera using jazz and blues idioms. George’s “folk opera” Porgy And Bess opened in Boston on September 30, 1935, and had its Broadway premiere two weeks later. In 1937 George was at the height of his career. In Hollywood, working on the score of The Goldwyn Follies, he collapsed and on July 11 died of a brain tumor. He was not quite 39 years old. IRA GERSHWIN, the first songwriter to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize, was born in New York City on December 6, 1896. In 1917 The Evening Sun published his first song (“You May Throw All The Rice You Desire But Please Friends, Throw No Shoes”). Four years later Ira enjoyed his first major stage success, Two Little Girls In Blue, written with another Broadway newcomer, Vincent Youmans. In 1924 Ira and his brother, George, created the smash hit Lady Be Good and went on to continue their remarkable collaboration through a dozen major stage scores, producing such standards as “Fascinating Rhythm,” “The Man I Love,” “’s Wonderful,” “Embraceable You,” “I Got Rhythm,” “But Not For Me” and others far too numerous to mention. During his long career, Ira also enjoyed productive collaborations with such songwriters as Harold Arlen, Vernon Duke, Kurt Weill, Burton Lane and Jerome Kern, with whom he created his greatest song hit of any one year, “Long Ago And Far Away.” Ira Gershwin died on August 17, 1983, in Beverly Hills, California. KEN LUDWIG (Playwright) has had 6 shows on Broadway and 7 in London’s West End, and his plays and musicals have been performed in more than 30 countries in over 20 languages. Lend Me a Tenor, which the Washington Post called “one of the classic comedies of the 20th century,” won two Tony Awards and was nominated for seven. He has also won two Laurence Olivier Awards, the Charles MacArthur Award, two Helen Hayes Awards, and the Edgar Award for Best Mystery of the Year. His plays have been commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Old Globe and the Bristol Old Vic. His 24 plays and musicals include Moon Over Buffalo (with Carol Burnett), Twentieth Century (with Alec Baldwin), The Game’s Afoot, Leading Ladies, The Fox on the Fairway, Baskerville and A Comedy of Tenors. His adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express will premiere in March at the McCarter Theatre and his newest play, Robin Hood!, opens at the Old Globe in August. His book How To Teach Your Children Shakespeare (Random House) won the Falstaff Award for Best Shakespeare Book of 2014. He holds degrees from Harvard, where he studied with Leonard Bernstein, Haverford College, and Cambridge University. For more information please visit www.kenludwig.com. HERE’S YOUR CUE Barbara Peddlesden’s Legacy Gift After supporting the theatre community throughout her life, cultural philanthropist Barbara Peddlesden left a meaningful legacy to Theatre Calgary when she passed away in February 2015. Her generous bequest of $100,000 will help Theatre Calgary to pursue artistic excellence and fortify our work for future generations. Barbara was born in 1918 in Calgary to parents Augustus and Olive Peddlesden. She grew up in Hillhurst and worked in the family businesses of The Bennett Glass Company, then Burmarsh Investments. Throughout her life, Barbara was very active in the Calgary community. She was the President and a Life Member of the University Women’s Club of Calgary, a Life Member of the Calgary Community Painters’ Society, a Member of the Calgary Artists Society, and an Honorary Member of the Alberta Society of Artists. She also presented an annual scholarship at Alberta College of Art and Design (Homesteader’s Legacy) and supported many of Calgary’s theatre groups. Barbara was a loyal subscriber and donor dating back to the early days when Theatre Calgary first performed in the Betty Mitchell Theatre at the Allied Arts Centre (later known as the QR Centre). Barbara’s nephew, William Peddlesden, was proud of Barbara’s legacy in this community:

Barbara Peddlesden

“She was grateful to have been born in Calgary and wished to give back to the community that was so good to her. She recognized that the theatre is a very important part of a society. Calgary is a much better place because of it. Since she was a long-time subscriber to Theatre Calgary, she wanted to ensure that it continued on and was financially successful. Although streets, intersections and bridges are essential to cities, they don’t make a city interesting. People don’t visit London [UK] because it has nice roads; they go there for the cultural experience. Theatre provides that.”

Share Your Passion with Future Generations In honour of Theatre Calgary’s 50th Anniversary in 2017-18, we are asking you to consider designating a legacy gift in your will. By remembering Theatre Calgary in your will, you can help ensure that future generations enjoy Theatre Calgary as you do today.

Your gift will help Theatre Calgary to achieve our ambitious artistic goals: • produce the finest theatre imaginable, featuring talented artists from our community and across the country; • seek out the most compelling stories from around the world – stories that stimulate our imaginations, emotions, and conversations; • safeguard our ability to hire superior craftsmen who are passionate about their work – set and costume designers, carpenters, costume and prop builders, technicians, composers, musicians, voice and movement coaches, actors, playwrights, directors and more; • give young people a chance to discover theatre through our interactive learning programs; • nurture the next generation of artists through our emerging artist programs; and • stand amongst the best theatres globally as a leader in innovative, inspiring, and diverse programming. Leaving a financial legacy is a way to make a meaningful gift to a charitable organization that you value, while maximizing tax and estate planning benefits. Once you have taken care of your family and loved ones, you may consider naming Theatre Calgary as a beneficiary of a portion of your estate. For our 50th Anniversary season, Theatre Calgary programmes will acknowledge all supporters who have included a Theatre Calgary bequest in their will. You may choose to be anonymous or be recognized in a way that might inspire others. For more information on leaving a legacy gift for Theatre Calgary, you can visit our website, or contact Shirley Yurchi at 403-294-7440 ext. 1002, or donations@ theatrecalgary.com. We recognize that your estate plans are a personal matter, and we will keep any information you choose to share with us confidential.

Please consider leaving a lasting legacy for Theatre Calgary’s next 50 years!

TD is proud to support Performing Arts across Canada. We are working with Theatre Calgary to bring people together through a shared love of the arts.

OUR LEGACY VOLUNTEERS We are tremendously fortunate to have over 400 volunteers who give so freely of their time to help Theatre Calgary come alive. As we approach our 50th season, we want to honour their commitment. Our Legacy Volunteers are those with 30+ years of service.

1988 Winter Olympics. I sewed costumes and dressed performers for the Opening Ceremonies. M: The Olympics energized the city and brought a sense of comradery – it was a good time! As Theatre Calgary approaches our 50th Anniversary, can you tell us how it has changed over the years? M: Well, we’ve gone through many Front of House staff! Three or four Artistic Directors – or more now! E: I’ve noticed that we are extending runs now sometimes; it’s exciting to see how much the community enjoys the productions. We didn’t used to start until October, and now September hits and we’re here! So that’s really nice to see a longer season.

Monty Martin and Elaine Lupul

32 years ago, newlyweds Monty Martin and Elaine Lupul began volunteering their time here at Theatre Calgary – and we could not be more grateful! Originally from Edmonton, this kind-hearted couple have made their life here in Calgary, putting down roots, raising their two daughters, and becoming a vital presence in the community. Our Artistic Associate, Jenna Turk, spoke with Monty and Elaine about their life together and their shared experience with Theatre Calgary. What has kept you volunteering for so long? Elaine: We love theatre, having the commitment was helpful and it was easy! Then, when we were starting a family, it was a really good way to come to the theatre, have a night out, and all we had to do was pay for a babysitter. Do you volunteer anywhere else? E: I’ve done a lot of volunteering, but in more strategic roles at our children’s schools and on boards. This (volunteering at Theatre Calgary) is FUN. There are many different reasons to volunteer – we do this as much for us as for the theatre. Monty: We also volunteer at Special Olympics Calgary for their swim meets. Our daughter swims with Special Olympics at SAIT. E: It’s part of the culture here in Calgary, to volunteer. And that spirit really took off with the

Has anything unexpected ever happened while volunteering? E: I remember working a student matinee of A Christmas Carol once, and there was a little bit of a ruckus in the audience. Somebody must have had an elastic band and they shot a paperclip on stage. And, Scrooge just stopped. M: Stephen Hair. E: His tone changed, and I can’t remember exactly how he addressed it, but it had something to do with safety and disrespect, and when he finished he was right back in character. It was seamless! Do you have any favourite shows or favourite memories from your time here? M: I really liked K2. E: I knew you were going to say that! E: You know, one of the things I’ve enjoyed about having this night for so long is the patrons. Seeing repeat patrons. M: They know us and we know them. E: It’s that sense of familiarity, of being part of a community. Thank you so much to Elaine Lupul and Monty Martin for 32 years of service!
