Welcome friends. Theatre exists for many reasons, and sometimes its purpose is for pure unabashed escapism. As the world continues to be in constant flux, and our newspaper headlines and Twitter feeds are daily reminders of the chaos that surrounds us, I am incredibly thankful that we have the opportunity to congregate at the Max Bell and celebrate the joy of the holiday season with this production of A Christmas Carol. Theatre can be an elixir of sorts, and the combination of the magic of this production – with its sensational cast, its engaging design, and its classic story – will definitely bring a smile to your soul. I have found through repeated viewings of this classic tale, that Ebenezer Scrooge’s journey forces me to stop and think about the world in which I/we live. There is a relevance and immediacy to this familiar tale about the transformation of the soul, and what the true definition of “the spirit of Christmas” means. We can learn from watching Scrooge’s metamorphosis – as even escapist theatre has the ability to move, touch, and inspire. The holidays are a time to connect and re-connect with family, friends, and loved ones. It is also a time of giving and compassion. To all our loyal subscribers, thank you for your continued support and appreciation of all we do here at Theatre Calgary. To any new friends in the audience, thank you for opening your hearts to the magic of theatre and to the theatre magic you will experience at Theatre Calgary. I hope and trust that everyone has a magnificent holiday season and that your lives continue to be enriched by love, joy, and the arts. STAFFORD ARIMA Artistic Director

DIRECTOR’S NOTES It is an honour to share my adaptation of A Christmas Carol with you once again. People have been attracted to A Christmas Carol over these past few decades here at Theatre Calgary for many different reasons. Some say it kick starts their holiday season, some love the spectacle of the story, and most appreciate the reminder of the importance of goodness and charity during this holiday season. This year, for me, the words “God bless us, Everyone” seem to have more power and resonance than ever. As we hear this story once again, let us remember that Charles Dickens was always an advocate for those less fortunate than him – and it's this inspiration that should encourage us to be more inclusive, accepting, and helpful to "everyone". It's as Dickens would have wished. I love that this play has been so deeply connected to Theatre Calgary throughout the past 50 years. I think the stories we share reflect the values we hold. One thing I have always loved about Calgary is the spirit of the people: a willingness to help a neighbour, volunteer for a cause, or wear a white hat and greet people at the airport. Calgarians have always impressed me with their instinctual sense of goodness towards others. That also explains why the annual Toonies for Turkeys fundraising drive for the Calgary Food Bank is an essential part of this production – the people of this city know how to put their words into action. Theatre Calgary's 50th season is a time to reflect and celebrate the accomplishments and traditions of the decades. A Christmas Carol – starring Stephen Hair – is one of the defining traditions of this important theatre company. God Bless us, everyone – indeed! DENNIS GARNHUM Director Theatre Calgary gratefully acknowledges the support provided by the City of Calgary through Calgary Arts Development, the Government of Alberta through The Alberta Foundation for the Arts, the Government of Canada through the Canada Council, Canadian Heritage and all corporate and private contributors.

From the Theatre Calgary family, thank you for honouring the spirit of Christmas. All the best to you and yours!

THE SPIRIT OF GIVING By Jenna Turk

The true lesson learned by Ebenezer Scrooge in A Christmas Carol is that the Christmas spirit should be carried throughout all the days of the year. With the Fezziwigs and Scrooge's nephew Fred leading by example, it seems a life of generosity and celebration is a life well lived. Theatre Calgary could not agree more! Theatre Calgary’s A Christmas Carol has been partnering with the Calgary Food Bank for over twenty years. Our Toonies for Turkeys fundraising campaign began in 1997 when an actor in the company, Lindsay Burns, had the thoughtful idea to collect money for the Food Bank after the show. It’s these acts of kindness that James McAra, CEO of the Calgary Food Bank, appreciates most. “Toonies for Turkeys connects the spirit of our community and our daily challenges. The awareness, the understanding, the focus on building the future all come from Theatre Calgary’s Toonies for Turkeys initiative. People can have a holiday feast, break bread together, and it's more than just turkey. It is about the gift of holiday celebration and the warmth of sharing. It is the quintessential reminder that our community can care all year long.” The first year of the campaign, it was only done during the final week of performances, but since then Toonies for Turkeys has grown to become an integral part of the annual A Christmas Carol experience. To date, Theatre Calgary staff, volunteers, and you – our audience – have helped raise more than 1.8 million dollars. Despite the recent financial downturn, James McAra says people are still giving, “Calgarians understand generosity. We have firsthand experience of the tragedies wrought from economic, environmental, and community crisis. People give time, talent, and more, in proportion to their condition. Calgarians get it.” Every $2 donated allows the Calgary Food Bank to distribute $10 worth of food. After each performance, our patrons are invited to donate whatever they can to help those less fortunate in our community. Actors, still in costume and armed with baskets, fill the lobbies, and without fail our patrons open their hearts and their pocketbooks. Some long-time subscribers even come to the show with cheques in hand! For this, we are incredibly appreciative.

CALGARY FOOD BANK Over the past year, the Calgary Food Bank served more than 184,000 citizens – 39% of whom were children. The Calgary Food Bank’s CEO reminds us who uses its services: “Your neighbour, a family member, you.” The Calgary Food Bank is an invaluable resource that provides emergency food hampers to the homeless, milk and formula to mothers and children in need, and meals and snacks to over 220 agencies

and programs each year. Please consider making a donation to our Toonies for Turkeys campaign or making a donation as you do your own holiday shopping – there are non-perishable donation bins at most major grocery stores in Calgary. Also, the Calgary Food Bank welcomes donations both non-perishable and perishable made directly to their warehouse at 5000 11 Street SE (loading door 3). Check out their Wishlist for their most needed items! WISHLIST Canned Meat Baby Food Pasta & Pasta Sauce Canned Veggies Fruit Juice Rice Canned Fruit Additionally if you’re feeling the pinch, McAra prompts us to remember the true spirit of giving, “You can volunteer, support your community (shovel snow, coach, pick up the mail, fix the leaky tap, read a good book with friends). Don’t worry about going it alone, we will all help.”

THE BIRTH OF A CHRISTMAS CAROL The holiday classic A Christmas Carol was inspired by both Charles Dickens’ own difficult childhood and the hard-pressed London of the late 1840’s. As a child, Dickens witnessed his father sent to a debtors’ prison, and as was the custom at the time, Dickens’ mother and youngest siblings joined him there. This left young Charles alone to board wherever and with whomever he could find. He was forced to quit school at the age of twelve and work ten-hour days at Warren’s Blacking Warehouse to earn his keep. Labouring in the rat-infested workhouse, preparing bottles of shoe polish (boot blacking) for purchase, Dickens observed firsthand the social injustices suffered by London’s most impoverished. Having lacked a formal education in his youth, as an adult he became a vocal advocate for children’s rights, and by 1843, the effects of the Industrial Revolution on the city’s underprivileged children were clear. An impassioned Dickens initially intended to write a pamphlet imploring the people of England to help. First Edition of A Christmas Carol Fortunately for us, he decided instead that a

story would have more impact. And so it did. A Christmas Carol was published 174 years ago, and remains a holiday classic that has never been out of print. To think, such a wondrous tale of the power of the Christmas spirit could have simply been a pamphlet tossed to the street!

IGNORANCE AND WANT Certainly Dickens’ own difficult childhood is expressed through A Christmas Carol, and he may have written his own happy ending in the form of the Cratchit family and Tiny Tim. Nevertheless, there are two other significant children in this classic tale: Ignorance and Want. When Scrooge encounters the Spirit of Christmas Present, he also meets this surprising young duo. Meant to represent the hardship present in Scrooge’s current world, they are the physical reminder of whom it is he has shunned when he turned out the solicitors from his office. In refusing to donate funds or assistance to them, he has rejected the poor and destitute. Ignorance and Want manifest the so-called “idle” people he detests and the surplus population he wishes would decrease. As the children leave with the Spirit of Christmas Present, Scrooge is haunted by his own words, “Are there no prisons?” and “Ignorance and Want” by John Leech, from “Are there no workhouses?” It is all too easy the 1843 first edition of A Christmas Carol. to shun those we don’t know or can’t see. All too simple to make the troubles of the world someone else’s problem. However, as the Spirit of Christmas Present informs Scrooge: Ignorance and Want are not his children – they belong to Man. Dickens may have been writing about 1840’s London, but his story and the children in it are all too relevant today. This holiday season, the world is struggling with economic, natural, and societal disasters happening regularly, it is impossible to disregard Ignorance and Want. The solicitors implore you to endeavor “to raise a fund to buy the poor some meat and drink, and means of warmth.” Let A Christmas Carol be a reminder.

SPOTLIGHT ON 50: A CHRISTMAS CAROL by Stephen Hunt

Throughout our 50th Anniversary Season, we take a look back at the storied history of bringing plays to our stage. A Christmas Carol wasn’t always Theatre Calgary’s annual holiday show, but since 1989, it has become one – for audiences, the theatre community, and the city at large, where Calgary’s 21st century holiday season very much revolves around Theatre Calgary’s annual production of a 19th century Dickens classic. A Christmas Carol employs dozens of Calgary artists every year, and a significant number of those actors – people such as Valerie Planche, Declan O’Reilly, Kevin Rothery, and Duval Lang – have performed multiple editions of the show, for an assortment of artistic directors, some stretching over a span of four decades. Despite all that history, it would probably be hard to top Theatre Calgary’s very first production of A Christmas Carol – which pre-dates its current 28 year run – for sheer holiday lunacy. Just ask Lang, who was part of the cast. “The first time (I did A Christmas Carol) was the first time (Theatre Calgary ever did it),” says Lang. “Back in 1983.” In those days, Theatre Calgary performed at its original home in the QR Centre on 9th Avenue. The company’s artistic director at the time was Rick McNair, and Stephen Hair – performing the role of Scrooge for the 24th time in 2017 – was part of the cast, but not in his iconic role. In 1983, Scrooge was played by noteable Stratford actor, Edward Atienza. That year, there was a Saturday morning blizzard that stranded Brian Gromoff, the actor playing the Ghost of Christmas Past, at the Safeway by the University of Calgary, with a bunch of groceries and no cab on a matinee day.

Les Carlson and Edward Atienza, 1983.

Frank Totino, Brian Gromoff, Barrie Baldaro, Edward Atienza, 1983.

Alerted by stage manager Laurie Champagne, artistic director McNair made a blizzard run in his Volkswagen and picked Gromoff up, but they were 35 minutes late for the curtain. That meant they missed the scene between Christmas Past and Scrooge, forcing Frank Turner, who played Jacob Marley, to improvise the Christmas Past scene with Atienza. “Eddie Atienza was kind of moving Frank Turner, who played Marley, around on stage,” says Lang, “and whispering, now say something about this! I remember we had several friends in the audience, and they didn’t even realize anything happened!” That year, the cast also drew names for a secret gift exchange – which McNair decreed they had to do onstage, during performances. “Even if we weren’t in the scene with them, we had to figure out how to physically hand them a Christmas present,” Lang says. “There were lots of crowd scenes – you could crash a crowd scene, change the blocking, then go up to someone and give them a present and so on.” “There was one crowd scene, and I can’t remember who it was,” he says, “but they gave actor Bruce Parkhouse a plastic bag with two goldfish in it. He had them for a couple of years, those goldfish.” Lang and a trio of other actors who played pallbearers in one scene decided to liven things up by adding something to each night’s casket walk. One night, they limped with their left feet. The next night, they limped with their right. One night, they pretended to be tramping through First World War mud. Another night, they affixed coat hangers to their scarves and pretended to be walking into a raging nor’wester – which worked great crossing the stage one way, but Lang admits looked a bit bonkers walking back. “We went across the stage, then upstage, then turned and started to laugh,” he says, “because we knew the wind storm was coming from the opposite direction. So we kind of crumbled,” he adds, “and got to our points – but (by then) we were laughing so hard that the stage manager said, 'I know what’s going on guys! Stop it!'”

Declan O'Reilly, David Brindle, Maureen Thomas, 1993. Photo: Trudie Lee

By the time Martin Kinch took over the company in the late 1980’s, his vision of the show was truly Dickensian. Declan O’Reilly – who has played the joyous shopkeeper Mr. Fezziwig since 2015 – earned his Actor’s Equity card playing Young Ebeneezer in Kinch’s 1993 production.

“Even the lighting and costuming was very much darker,” O’Reilly says. “The current version – with that beautiful blue and white ice backdrop – I find it quite refreshing and crisp. But back in the Martin Kinch version, it was dark.” All of which, O’Reilly admits, made a certain amount of sense, dramatically speaking. “That was tough times,” he says. “The Industrial Revolution (was happening), and when you think about London at that time: (there was) a lot of coal burning, a lot of soot in the air, a lot of grime. Very bleak.”

Valerie Planche prepares backstage, 2011. Photo: David Cooper

"There were also productions over the years that were more supernatural than other years," says Valerie Planche, who has played almost every female role in the show and debuted back when O’Reilly did in 1993. "There have been ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Future, not to mention a Ghost of Jacob Marley – all of them scarier in some productions than in others," says Planche. One of Planche’s favourite memories was playing one of them. “I really did love playing the ghost, because I loved to fly,” she says, “but let me tell you, when I flew, they had steel pads on my shoulders and this big harness, and it was like, oh my god, (I’m hanging from the rafters) 35 feet in the air – and we came down fast. It was really fun, though.” As fun as it was to play a ghost, Planche believes in the need to deliver the dark part of the story – and she thinks audiences are in good hands with the storytelling talents of Charles Dickens. “Dickens sets it up so he mitigates the scariness,” she says, “but there actually are ghosts and you actually saw the want and the need, and the struggle within the people (to deal with those ghosts).” No matter what tone the show aimed for onstage, it has always managed to connect with Calgary audiences. For Kevin Rothery, who has done the show nine times, playing everyone from Fezziwig to the Ghost of Christmas Present, that unique connection between a show and its audience is its very own holiday experience.

Stephen Hair, Kevin Rothery, 2010. Photo: Trudie Lee

“It’s a universal story,” Rothery says. “One of the reasons it has become a tradition (in Calgary)... (is that) A Christmas Carol speaks to – in my mind anyway – the idea of redemption and celebration. Even the most crotchety, angry, seemingly selfish individual has the opportunity to redeem themselves, and to help other people.” “Different versions have been more sparkly and shiny and fun than others,” he adds. “Some are more dark and still tell a powerful story of redemption for people – and the ability to celebrate family and togetherness at a time of year when, I think, we need to look at things and look at the community around us.” It brings families together. Thanks to Toonies for Turkeys, it has become a huge fundraiser for the Calgary Food Bank – which also gives theatre patrons a chance to meet the cast, after every show. For O’Reilly, collecting toonies for the food bank after a performance has turned out to be a trip through the time tunnel that spans his entire professional acting career. “I run into people in the audience, or after the show, when quite often we go out and collect Toonies for Turkeys,” O’Reilly says, “and I’ll see people who were young coming to that show 20-odd years ago – and now they’re there with their kids.”

HERE’S YOUR CUE with donors David & Diana Ballard For A Christmas Carol, we sat down with retired Albertan school teacher David Ballard and his wife Diana, who worked in advertising, and hails from Australia. Is there anyone in your family involved in the arts in some way? Our daughter is on the Board of Directors at Dancers’ Studio West, Diana has acted on stage and I (David) was the producer of a show in an amateur theatre setting. We actually met volunteering at the Southern Alberta Jubilee Auditorium building sets for a local theatre, The Buskins. What first got you interested in Theatre Calgary? We’ve both always been interested in the arts, and Theatre Calgary is the largest theatre in the city, so it seems only natural that we would have a subscription there. How long have you been a subscriber and what keeps you coming back year after year? We’ve been subscribers off and on since the 60s. The reason we got season tickets is that we found ourselves missing shows that we wanted to see, and having season tickets makes sure you don’t miss anything! We like to be entertained, and it’s a nice outing. As a subscriber, you are already supporting the theatre, what triggered your desire to become a donor too?

David & Diana Ballard

We feel everybody should do it. We recognize the need, and we know if we don’t support the things we enjoy, we could end up losing them. By doing this interview you are helping us shine a spotlight on donating to the theatre. Why did you choose to do this? Why would we not! We believe it’s important to help you encourage others to support the theatre. We understand what it takes to put a show on the stage, and we recognize the need, so we want to do what we can to support the organization, financially and elsewise. Given that we are celebrating our 50th anniversary this season, what would you say to encourage others to consider including a donation – even if they have never done so before? Remember not to take things for granted; a 50th anniversary is an achievement worth celebrating. If you can support the theatre with a $50 or a $500 donation, or whatever you can, it helps the organization towards its next 50 years.

“We recognize the need, and we know if we don’t support the things we enjoy, we could end up losing them.” A lot of organizations are struggling as we navigate the turbulent economy. What do you feel it is that the arts can offer the city in times like this? It helps to get people out so they’re not just sitting at home thinking about their troubles. It can give people the sense of a shared experience and a sense of goodwill. It can inspire conversations and can get people, even perfect strangers, talking to one another and perhaps even start up a friendship. It can even offer the kids an alternative to You-Tube and video games. Have you introduced others to the theatre? Yes! Sometimes if we just can’t make a show work in our schedule, we’ll give out tickets to friends or neighbours, for them to enjoy. Are there any shows that stand out or were your favourites over the years? The Great Gatsby, and Crazy for You, but we especially love the shows where you’ve partnered with other organizations. We love the idea of the organizations sharing expenses, comradery, and experience which can bring bigger and better shows to each of their audiences than they could have on their own.

Play your part to keep theatre thriving in Calgary As we approach the festive season, it is a time when many of us reflect on our year and what the future looks like for us. Many people also consider how they can make a difference in their community. After 50 years, Theatre Calgary continues to give Calgarians a window to the world through our productions. We have, thanks to patrons like you, become a part of the community fabric that makes Calgary a great place to live, work, and play. Our patrons are the life-blood that keeps us alive. Subscribers and ticket purchasers provide 60 per cent of our revenue; support from donors makes it possible for us to elevate our productions to world-class quality. Donors are a vital and integral part of our family. If you have enjoyed our productions and recognise the need for theatre in Calgary, please consider making a gift in honour of our 50th anniversary. Donors love knowing they are supporting a production they are watching, knowing they are helping designers to perfectly costume a character, or create beautiful scenery. For more information on how to donate please visit theatrecalgary.com or contact donations@theatrecalgary.com

OUR LEGACY VOLUNTEERS 34 years ago, at the age of seventeen, Sara Drabinsky began volunteering her time here at Theatre Calgary – and we could not be more grateful! Sara is a lifelong theatre volunteer, whose youthful energy and enthusiasm is an incredible asset to Theatre Calgary. Our Learning and Engagement Associate, Jennifer Taylor, spoke with her about her life and experience with Theatre Calgary. Are you from Calgary originally? I’m actually a fifth generation Calgarian. My great-great-grandmother came here in 1905, the year Alberta became a province. But I’m a big traveler, I’ve traveled to forty-eight countries overseas, and I spent a year studying at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and then I also studied in London, England, for a year. I've also taught for short periods in China, South Korea, and Taiwan. What brought you to Theatre Calgary? I actually began volunteering when I was seventeen years old, and I was still in high school. My family has always been involved in theatre. My mom’s an actress, and my dad always got put to work managing front of house. So, I started helping where I could; it’s a family affair. What brings you back year after year? Most specifically, The number one reason I would say that it is like a big family. Everyone’s really nice and considerate. This year, Lee Booth has started to personally thank all the volunteers, so he actually meets us before every show and thanks us for coming. That’s showing a lot of appreciation.

Do you volunteer elsewhere? Yes, I volunteer for the Calgary Opera. I also volunteer for Alberta Ballet, and I’m on the Board of Directors of the Jewish Historical Society of Southern Alberta. You know, Heritage Park: the Little Synagogue? We’re very active in the Little Synagogue too. And I volunteer for community theatre groups as well. How has Theatre Calgary changed since you started ushering? Over the years, I’ve seen a lot more volunteers. I’ve also seen a greater variety of patrons, because Theatre Calgary offers a variety of productions each season – which I love. Also, I think I’ve seen every production of A Christmas Carol that they’ve ever performed, so I’ve seen the set change, and I’ve seen all the actors change over the years. Toonies for Turkeys brings me to tears every year. Stephen Hair gives such a good speech. Do you have any favourite memories of your time volunteering here? Favourite shows? I’ve done Night with the Stars for more than ten years, and that’s always a highlight. My proudest moment was getting my Legacy Pin. I wear my pin all the time. Do you have any advice for anyone thinking of volunteering here? The best advice I can give anyone is DO IT! You won’t regret it! If you are interested in volunteering with Theatre Calgary or would like to learn more, please contact Norm Cook via email: ncook@theatrecalgary.com
