WELCOME I can't think of a better way to kick off a season than by presenting the Canadian premiere of this international sensation, loaded with hilarity and laughter. This comedy is a delightful accomplishment for many reasons. The author, Richard Bean, has taken a classical theatre style (commedia dell’arte), and adapted an 18th century Italian play (The Servant of Two Masters) and made it fresh, bright, and thoroughly enjoyable for a modern audience. Those familiar with the source material will have a double delight. Regardless, it is a tour de force performance for one actor peppered with a cast of characters of adorable types and stereotypes— all in good fun. Watching the original production in London's West End last year, I was thrilled to discover a play so relentlessly silly and light. No profound morality tale here. As it unfolded, I imagined how our production would come to life. Calgary's own Kevin Corey was born to play the central role of Francis Henshall. His enormous talent and huge heart are a delightful combination. We’ve also surrounded him with a cast of goofy Calgarians along with a few wacky folks from across the country, all directed by the zaniest Vancouverite: Dean Paul Gibson. More than anything, One Man, Two Guvnors is a celebration of the joy of live theatre. So begins another season of surprises here at Theatre Calgary. Welcome.
DENNIS GARNHUM Artistic Director
one man, two guvnors DIRECTOR'S NOTES Comedy is hard work! Here’s a chronicle of one rehearsal day for the show you’re about to see: The morning began with a vocal warm-up for the entire ensemble under the careful guidance of Joe Slabe, the production’s musical director. As this was happening, I had an illuminating discussion with my assistant director Mike Griffin about the history of commedia dell’arte while answering questions for our wonderful stage management team. Then we did a run of the whole show for our designers, and after a brief tea break, I had time before lunch to share my observations with the cast and make a to-do list for the afternoon. I spent lunchtime in a production meeting with designers, builders, and technical staff, discussing in great detail how to realize this enormous production. While music and choreography continued in the rehearsal hall, I had a few minutes to gather my thoughts before welcoming our beloved Tom McCabe, President of Theatre Calgary, for an impromptu visit with an important donor, which gave us the opportunity to thank them and show first-hand the results of their generous contributions to our art. Then I dropped in on two costume fittings to watch our beautiful 1960s outfits come together thanks to the hard work of the wardrobe department, and I couldn’t help but get a little giddy imagining how they would look against our magnificent painted backdrops. These are the moments that remind me why I direct. When I returned to rehearsal I was treated to several musical numbers that had been polished and harmonized into an auditory feast – an authentic sound of Brighton in 1963. At the afternoon coffee break, I spoke with an actor about the challenge of making a stylized farce, agreeing that it demands physical rigour and sharpness of movement, as well as dexterous mental acuity. A huge task. This brought us to the last quarter of our rehearsal day, which we spent perfecting our door-slamming, spit-takes, and prop food consumption. No actors were harmed in the making of this production!

Let’s be clear: it’s very serious business creating a comedy. But! There is tremendous satisfaction in working with so many talented artists, and when I hear the laughter and see the joy on people’s faces, I know it’s worth every minute of hard work we spend trying to make it the best it can be. Enjoy!
UP NEXT Our next production is the world premiere of Liberation Days, by Calgary playwright David van Belle. It’s heartbreakingly Canadian and breathtakingly beautiful. A great new play will be born on our stage soon. Be one of the first to experience it.

After years of terror and suffering under German occupation in wwii, the Netherlands has been liberated by Canadian forces. In the days that follow, liberation doesn’t always seem like freedom. A young Dutch woman and a Canadian soldier create a new world together as a community discovers what remains of their old lives, and what’s been lost forever. This beautiful new play by David van Belle examines his Dutch heritage and, in some ways, his place in the world as a Canadian. When I finished reading this play for the first time, amid the wash of tears on my face, I shouted to the skies, “A great new play is born!” A world premiere by a Calgary playwright: it doesn’t get more thrilling than that. – Dennis

1.2 million dollars to save the company. “We struggled through the next season and that got us back on our feet. And we haven’t looked back since.” When asked if this is his proudest accomplishment, he’s quick to share credit: “Everyone on the board worked so hard and of course the staff! During that time the staff volunteered to work a month without pay. It couldn’t have happened without them.” It was shortly after this crisis that Tom became full-time President of the company and established a financial endowment and strategic plan to ensure the company’s solid foundation.

A STANDING OVATION FOR TOM McCABE By Shari Wattling, Artistic Associate
For the past 17 years Tom McCabe has been President of Theatre Calgary. His remarkable passion and leadership has made this theatre a model of strong financial management and artistic excellence in Canada. But more than that, he has been both a great friend and a tireless advocate for artists on our stage and in the performing arts throughout our city. So it is with heavy hearts that we learned that Tom will be departing Theatre Calgary this fall. Recently, I chatted with Tom to reflect on his thoughts and memories. He first joined TC as a board member in 1990, after moving to Calgary while serving as Vice President with the Bank of Montreal. When I asked him why he chose to volunteer with a theatre company, he responded quickly, with his trademark smile: “I was in theatre in high school. I never acted, although I think I’m pretty talented! [laughs] But I loved the technical side. Building sets and things like that. So when I transferred from city to city, I always volunteered for not-for-profit boards and I always loved the arts. I had a great job at the bank, but this is so rewarding. You’re doing something for the community.” As a board member, Tom faced one of the most challenging times in the company’s history in 1996 when a financial crisis nearly shut the doors forever. “There were a number of us, myself included, who said ‘we’ve gotta clean up this mess,’ and so a group of us decided to take it and carry on.” Under Tom’s leadership, a team of dedicated board members raised
Sitting in his office, one can’t help but notice numerous photos of Tom with so many artists, dignitaries and staff members over the years. A clear reflection of just how many people and connections have been fostered by his leadership. I ask if there are particular moments or people that stand out in his memory. After a few short anecdotes about leading actors and specific productions he quickly turns his thoughts to more regular, everyday encounters. “I love going to rehearsals and sitting and watching and listening. We have a wonderful crew in our carpentry shop and a great wardrobe department. I love going around and spending time with them. They’re all wonderful people and wonderfully talented. I admire what they do.” And the feeling is mutual. Local actor Haysam Kadri (Bob Cratchit in A Christmas Carol and Program Director for Shakespeare by the Bow) says of Tom’s commitment to artists in the city: “Tom McCabe has had a profound impact on Calgary's cultural landscape. His passion and commitment to the not-forprofit sector is unparalleled." Artistic Director Dennis Garnhum echoes this respect and admiration: “Tom has always been my champion at Theatre Calgary. For the past nine years he has strongly supported the direction I wanted to lead this company. He has been instrumental in the enormous growth and success of this company. I will miss him greatly." As my conversation with Tom turns to his thoughts about Theatre Calgary’s future, his response is typical of his passion for the company: “To my mind we can be the best theatre in Canada if we allow the vision to emerge. I’m quite convinced it’s doable with the right vision and the right dedication. But that’s what Calgary is. We tend to do things big and when we do them we do them right.” On behalf of our board, staff, volunteers, artists, and our audiences, thank you so much, Tom, for all you’ve done for Theatre Calgary and our community. You deserve our huge round of applause.
As a tribute to Tom McCabe’s contribution to the arts, a fund has been created to help ensure Theatre Calgary’s continued commitment to the highest quality productions for years to come. ONE PLAY, TWO PLAYWRIGHTS: CARLO GOLDONI AND RICHARD BEAN One Man, Two Guvnors is based on The Servant of Two Masters, the masterpiece of 18th-century Italian playwright Carlo Goldoni. The prolific Goldoni was a servant of many aesthetic masters – a writer as inventive and resourceful as his characters. In more than a hundred plays and operas, he took the stock characters, slapstick humour, and improvisational elements of Italy’s longstanding commedia dell’arte tradition and started to imbue them with the greater sense of realism and human truth that audiences in his day had begun to crave. The results speak for themselves: The Servant of Two Masters is still one of Italy’s most popular plays today. British playwright Richard Bean’s new version is remarkably faithful to Goldoni’s original play, even while transporting the action from Venice to Brighton and from the 18th century to 1963. The new setting lets Bean draw not just on Italian commedia but also on the rich traditions of British comedy, in particular the music hall variety shows that, much like North American vaudeville, featured an eclectic and unpredictable line-up of novelty acts, comic singers, and popular music. Since One Man, Two Guvnors premiered at the National Theatre in London in 2011, the play has been seen by more than a million people around the world.
Guvnor: A British slang term for boss that comes from the word governor. THE WORLD OF COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE Commedia dell’arte is a type of masked improvised comedy that flourished in Italy from the 1500s to the 1700s. A theatre of the common people, it was originally performed by travelling troupes who played in town squares or marketplaces. Commedia has had a major influence on popular culture over the years, with remnants of its characters and situations found in everything from the vaudeville era’s slapstick comedians to modern-day sitcoms. Commedia performances were improvised around scenarios: a character list, a plot outline, and some brief notes about the action of the story. The performers trained for years and usually played a single stock character their whole lifetime, learning the appropriate monologues, stage business, and showstopping comic gags (lazzi) for their characters, and then using this repertoire of material to bring scenarios to life. Since there were many distinct dialects in Italy at the time, the commedia acting style evolved to be larger-than-life with lots of physical action, so that the audience would be able to understand the performance wherever the troupe travelled.
Drawings of commedia dell’arte characters by 19th-century illustrator Maurice Sand. From left to right: Dottore, Pantalone, Colombina, Lover, Arlecchino, Capitano.
14
There were four main character types, with many individual characters falling within each one:
OLD MEN – Pantalone and Dottore, who are usually long-time friends. Pantalone is a tight-fisted merchant. Dottore is a bumbling expert who claims to know everything but really knows nothing. LOVERS – Often the children of the Old Men, the Lovers are beautiful and vain. Love controls their world; they are in love with their lover, in love with themselves, and in love with the state of being in love. Unlike most other commedia characters, the Lovers were performed without masks.
SERVANTS – The servant characters (such as Arlecchino) were known as zanni in Italian, which is the source for the English word zany. They cause much of the confusion and mishap in commedia, often by making mistakes while doing a task assigned by their master.
CAPITANO – Typically a wandering soldier, Capitano is a braggart who puts up a brave façade, but is actually a coward.

BRIGHTON IN THE 1960s A seaside town with quaint hotels, a pebble beach, and two amusement piers, Brighton in the 1960s was a favourite seaside spot for working-class Londoners. Thousands of vacationers boarded the Brighton Belle express train for the shores of the English Channel just an hour south, where they lounged on striped rental beach chairs and fended off the chilly breeze with hats and coats. The American journalist David Brinkley, who visited Brighton in the early 1960s, recalled that “it was amusing to walk along the water’s edge, and to hear from one end of the beach to the other the same BBC soap opera on hundreds of battery radios.” But placid holiday-seekers weren’t the only ones to take the train down from London. Brighton also had a reputation for underworld connections and ties to London gangs, who controlled gambling at the town’s racetrack. This seedy image was popularized by Graham Greene’s 1938 novel Brighton Rock, a thriller about young gangsters set amidst Brighton’s hotels and piers.

THE SKIFFLE CRAZE A whole generation of British rock musicians got their start playing skiffle, one of the nation’s first youthdriven music crazes. Inspired by African-American music of the early 20th century, skiffle groups played lighthearted folk music, usually on cheap or homemade instruments such as the acoustic guitar, banjo, washboard, and tea-chest bass. The music appealed to working-class teenagers since it required little money for instruments or musical training. Forming a skiffle group was easy: the simple music required only three or four chords, a few friends, and (ideally) a sense of rhythm. By 1957, at the height of the craze, there were more than 30,000 skiffle bands in Britain. As teenagers, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and George Harrison all played together in Lennon’s skiffle group The Quarrymen. As the skiffle trend began to wane, they turned their attention to rock and roll music like many other young skiffle players. By 1960, they had removed their banjo player and changed the band’s name to The Beatles.

WITH THE PHILOSOPHY
THAT EVERYDAY
IS WORTH CELEBRATING.
Our preshow favourite. This refreshingly lightly sparkling white wine is a happy hour favourite in Venice. Rustico is fresh, sparkling, elegant with lively fruit and extraordinary effervescence. Available by the glass here or at your favourite restaurant or winestore.
