WELCOME I vividly remember my first encounter with this new play. Just over a year ago I sat by a lake, in the heat of the sun, and was transported back in time to a village in the Netherlands. I couldn’t put the script down. I was both dazzled and moved by David van Belle's fresh interpretation of Canadians in wartime. Thanks to David's curiosity about his Dutch heritage and his marvellous way with words, I'm left with an increased admiration for our soldiers and a greater compassion for the people of the Netherlands. Liberation by definition is a powerful and positive thing. But it certainly does come at a cost. Liberation Days has been developed through FUSE: The Enbridge New Play Development Program at Theatre Calgary. Over the past nine years we have successfully premiered seven new works on our stage, most of which have gone on to further productions in cities throughout North America. We have done this so successfully because our audiences have embraced and encouraged us to share these original, untested new stories and adaptations. With this production we celebrate Calgarian David van Belle and the birth of this beautiful new play.

DENNIS GARNHUM Artistic Director

liberation days DIRECTOR'S NOTES How do you direct a scene if it’s in a language you don’t speak? That’s a dilemma I run into frequently in my directing, because it’s the kind of work I’m most drawn to – stories about people from different cultures trying to find ways to connect with each other through the barriers of different languages and different beliefs. That interest has recently drawn me to direct plays in languages such as Bosnian, Xhosa, and American Sign Language. Liberation Days, set in the Netherlands and full of Dutch-speaking characters, is a perfect example of this kind of exciting crosscultural storytelling. The rehearsal process has been amazingly insightful. The cast has worked tirelessly learning the language – training with experts such as our Dutch Language Consultant Dymphny Dronyk and our Dialect & Vocal Coach Jane MacFarlane. These incredibly brave actors are performing for you in a language they don’t speak (or at least, didn’t speak until rehearsals started!). We have learned so much about the Netherlands, about Dutch culture and personality, and about Dutch “directness.” But ultimately what makes this story so engaging and important is that it is not only about a country far across the ocean from us, it is about the inextricable connection between Canada and the Netherlands. It’s a story about how our two countries were flung together during a particular period in history, and how that changed the people of both countries forever. That is why I do theatre. To dig deep into another culture in order to learn more about my own.

Through rehearsals we have got to the heart of these characters, whether they speak English or Dutch. We know what they want, what stands in their way, and what they’re willing to do to get it. We know them emotionally and physically, and how their language helps shape who they are. So, to that end, it doesn’t matter if I speak the language, or if you do for that matter. You may not understand each and every word the characters say tonight, but you will understand everything they’re trying to communicate. You will see these vibrant compelling characters striving to find love, find escape, find answers, and they will do it with the tools they have available to them, which sometimes involves words, and sometimes transcends language altogether. It’s an innovative, exciting, beautiful new play, and I’m so proud to bring it to you. Geniet van de voorstelling! (Enjoy the show!)

UP NEXT A Christmas Carol returns this holiday season, celebrating 28 years of spirited tradition. In the New Year, come enjoy the music of Leonard Cohen in Chelsea Hotel followed by the Shaw Festival production of The Philadelphia Story – a delightful and warm comedy to combat the winter cold.

A NOTE FROM THE PLAYWRIGHT The liberation of the Netherlands is one of those stories that we love to tell. And it’s a good one, especially because it happens to be true – for the most part it was Canadian soldiers that brought freedom from violence, hunger and fear to the Dutch people in April and May of 1945. They were welcomed as the heroes that they were, with joy and celebration. It’s a good story. David van Belle. Photo by Citrus Photography.

It’s not only a good national story, it’s a powerful personal story for me, and not just because my birthday happens to be May 5, which is celebrated as Liberation Day in the Netherlands. Both of my parents were children during the war and were liberated by the Canadians. And that contact changed my life – both my mother and my father’s families were so impressed by the soldiers that when they decided to emigrate in 1951, they chose Canada. The liberation is the reason I’m a Canadian, not a New Zealander or a South African. But when my parents returned to the Netherlands for my dad’s doctoral studies in 1967, after they had met and married in Canada, they discovered a country that was vastly different from the one they had left. Old social, religious and economic divisions had broken A Dutch newspaper from 1945: “The Canadians down, and the have come!" Photo courtesy of David van Belle. country resembled the progressive, secular society it is today. Something akin to Quebec’s Quiet Revolution had taken place. My parents moved back to Canada in 1971, after my brother and I were born, having themselves been transformed religiously and politically by their experience in their changed homeland. The roots of this change are the other part of this national story, an aspect that not many of us know about in Canada. When the Canadians rolled into the Netherlands in the last weeks of the war they found a society that had experienced the catastrophes of destruction, starvation and betrayal. As the dust of war settled, the Dutch began to consider all 14

that had happened and to determine how or if they wanted to reassemble their damaged society. At the same time, two nations who had become friends soon became roommates during the months that followed. And as we all know, even the best of friends don’t always make ideal roommates. Therein lies the action of the play. I find it a satisfying paradox that while most of the characters in Liberation Days are Dutch, the play is profoundly about Canada, as seen from the outside. And while it’s a portrayal that’s certainly more complex than the story we know, it’s no less heroic. Canada, as seen by the Dutch, is downright sexy. It represents the opportunity to change: the chance to build new lives out of the rubble. But Canada is also dangerous. It challenges your loyalties and your deeply-held beliefs. And if you decide to emigrate to Canada, especially in the days before weekly KLM flights from Calgary to Amsterdam, you’ll never be seen again. I’m so grateful to Theatre Calgary for premiering this work. My initial idea for the show grew out of their call for plays that would fit the scope of their stage, and it’s been a profoundly enjoyable experience to have their support through the play’s development, as well as that of the Canada Council, Vicki Stroich and the Alberta Playwrights’ Network. And as we move through rehearsal I’m grateful and awestruck by the enormous artistic vocabulary Theatre Calgary brings as we speak the language of the theatre. This play is dedicated to Emma and Aaltje and Vanessa and Wren. I hope you enjoy it. David van Belle

THE NETHERLANDS IN WORLD WAR II At the outset of the Second World War in 1939, the Netherlands had hoped to remain neutral as it did during World War I. But despite reassurances from Germany, the Netherlands was invaded in the spring of 1940 in a ferocious assault of airborne troops, bombings, and blitzkrieg attacks. With little hope of military support from France or Britain, the Netherlands soon surrendered and five long years of German occupation began. The German administration implemented a policy of “forced conformity,” hoping to quickly absorb the Netherlands into the German Reich. From 1941 to 1944, the occupation took a more violent turn, including harsh acts of public repression such as confiscation of property, the involuntary transportation of more than 300,000 Dutch citizens to Germany as forced labour, and the murder of Jews and members of resistance groups. Approximately 250,000 Netherlanders died as a result of the war, including 104,000 Jews who represented 75% of the pre-war Jewish population.

THE HUNGER WINTER

The destruction of Rotterdam, May 1940 (U.S. Defense Visual Information Center)

In the months after the Allied landing in Normandy in June 1944, conditions grew worse in the Nazi-occupied Netherlands. Convinced that the Allies would soon end the war, the Dutch government-in-exile called for a general railway strike to disrupt the flow of German troops and supplies. The Germans retaliated by cutting off all fuel and food shipments to much of the country, just as an unusually harsh and early winter set in. Fuel shortages meant that village trees were cut down for fuel, and wood from furniture, railroad ties, and public buildings was scavenged as well. Many Dutch men were forced into hiding or had been transported to labour camps, so women and children became responsible for gathering food and fuel, often trekking for dozens of kilometres to forage and barter. In November 1944, the average daily ration (composed mainly of bread, potatoes and sugar beets) was 1,040 calories. By January 1945, the ration was about 580 calories, and by April it had fallen to 320 calories. Over the course of the winter, approximately 20,000 Netherlanders died from starvation or cold. THE END OF THE WAR AND BEYOND The First Canadian Army advanced northwest through the Netherlands in the spring of 1945, liberating village after village against pockets of German resistance. As they went, they were greeted with enthusiastic celebrations by Dutch citizens. Nearly 200,000 Canadians came through the Netherlands during the war and tens of thousands remained stationed there for several months after the German surrender in May, 1945. As the weeks and months went on, tensions emerged as supplies remained scarce and cultures began to clash. Before the war, Dutch society had been dominated by paternalistic and conservative codes of social and sexual behavior, particularly in villages and rural communities where the Catholic and Reformed churches held strong influence. The war altered these practices as women and young people became the primary providers in many households. The presence of Canadian soldiers in small villages accentuated the cultural shift – the soldiers were an attractive diversion for young Dutch women. Religious leaders tried in vain to

discourage fraternization with servicemen, and several popular songs of the day warned women of the dangers of being seduced by Canadian soldiers. For most Netherlanders, however, these concerns could not diminish their overwhelming respect for Canadian bravery and loss in the fight to free their country. As the final Canadian soldiers left for home a year after liberation, they took with them an entire country’s gratitude.

George Here’s withBrookman Your Cue George Brookman is the owner of West Canadian Digital Print Centre

When did you first become involved with Theatre Calgary? We were attendees of the theatre when it was known as Mac 14 but it wasn’t until Tom McCabe became President that we took a more active role. We’ve been sponsors for almost 20 years, which has allowed us to bring live theatre to new people and promote Theatre Calgary at the same time.

Why do you think this show is important to Calgary’s Dutch community? There is a large Dutch population in Calgary and a play like this resonates with them, as well as with the French community, as France was also occupied by the Germans during the war. Liberation Days is relevant to anyone from a country that has been occupied. It’s an important way for the theatre to keep our city engaged by offering significant stories inspired from past events.

Why is Liberation Days sigificant to you and your family? My mother was born in the province of Groningen in the northern part of the Netherlands. When the war broke out she was 12 or 13, old enough to remember when the Germans took over her town. She remembered her mother telling her to close all the blinds and to stay home from school. One day, my mother said she and her brother peeked through the blinds and saw the Germans march up the street towards their house. When they arrived in front of her house, they entered and took over.

How did your mother come to Canada?

My mother came to Canada after marrying my father who was a soldier in the war. My parents met at a dance while she was there with her longtime boyfriend. The Canadian soldiers weren’t dancing, so her boyfriend suggested she ask one of them to dance. At the end of the night my father became her new boyfriend. Even though they were married their entire lives, my parents’ marriage was stormy. My father was a bit of a wild man, which led to many lonely nights for my mother. I think she adapted well but it was not a dream life for all the women that came to Canada as war brides.

What stories did your mother tell you about the war?

My mother was feisty and told a story about a time she and a girlfriend were shopping in a store, when two German soldiers came in with guns and bayonets. My mother, who was 17 or 18 at the time, walked up to them and said “we’re shopping here, you wait outside until we’re done!” The two soldiers turned and walked out; after all, they were just young men, caught up in the war like everyone else.

“Arts and culture are a massive part of what forms a community.”

Why do you believe this production of Liberation Days is a story that needs to be told?

Our community needs you on GivingTuesday!

GivingTuesday Canada is December 2, 2014. It is a day of giving and volunteering, taking place each year after Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

This play will keep the story of the liberation of the Netherlands alive for another generation. I look at my children and grandchildren, and while they have Dutch features, they don’t know about their heritage. Liberation Days will teach my family and many other families about what happened during the war and the turmoil the people went through. It’s important to remember that there was no happily-ever-after for many people.

Last year, there was an overwhelming response as millions of Canadians participated in GivingTuesday – proving that the holidays can be about both giving and giving back.

How does a play like Liberation Days enrich the community?

We encourage theatre patrons to join in GivingTuesday by making a donation to Theatre Calgary.

Many people come to Calgary to make a tremendous living, but don’t establish roots. We need to build a city where people come to make a life, not just a living. Arts and culture are a massive part of what forms a community. I think that plays like the ones Theatre Calgary puts on are very important in building a livable city.

What role do you think sponsors can play in bringing shows like Liberation Days to life on the stage?

Financial support is important because an organization can’t provide quality theatre without funding or resources. But sponsors can also play a role by spreading the word about a show like this in the same way we do when we put on our client nights. It’s a great way to say thank you to those you do business with and promote the theatre to people who might not have had an opportunity in the past to see the great work the theatre offers.

GivingTuesday celebrates how Canadians can do more with their wallets than just shop – and that we can give as good as we get.

Your gift will help ensure Theatre Calgary’s place in our community – presenting theatre of the highest quality, featuring the best talents in our country. Please mark your calendar, and on December 2nd make your mark in our community. Donations can be made online (theatrecalgary.com) or by contacting the Theatre Calgary office.
