WELCOME For twenty-nine seasons Theatre Calgary has presented Charles Dickens’ classic holiday story A Christmas Carol. Over 600,000 Calgarians have attended the production throughout the years, and an impressive 500 people have been involved as actors, technicians, designers, directors, and other artists. Every year, as happy patrons pour out of our theatre after each performance, we are reminded of the power of Dickens’ words to inspire and delight. There are audience members who return year after year and bring their ever-expanding families. Our tradition has become their tradition. For many people, attending A Christmas Carol at Theatre Calgary signals the beginning of their holiday celebrations. The message of our story is always relevant: kindness to others. We invite you to turn this message into action by donating what you can to the Calgary Food Bank at the end of the performance. Together, our audiences and artists have raised over $1.6 million in donations for the food bank. With your generosity our story truly comes to life in a tangible and meaningful way. Thank you for sharing this beloved production with us. DENNIS GARNHUM Artistic Director

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTES When I moved to Calgary 8 months ago, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect as a Maritimer and recent Toronto transplant running a company that is such a well-rooted and beloved local treasure. Thankfully, what I have found is that this community is generous, welcoming, and ready for anyone with ambition, good intention and heartfelt optimism. This feeling of being welcomed has been consistent and remains so, now more than ever. We are all weathering through these times of economic turmoil, political change, and, in many cases, general uncertainty. We may not come out of this environment anytime soon, but we can take a moment to be inspired by beauty, joy, and the triumph of the human spirit. That is what this production of A Christmas Carol provides – a moment that reminds us that no matter bad how things may appear, we still have the ability to make a difference for our community. We are all responsible to ourselves and our neighbours to make sure that our city becomes all that it can be, and to support each other in the process. Last November, on opening night, I saw this production of A Christmas Carol for the very first time. What struck me so profoundly, in addition to the impressive local talent, was the palpable sense of family in the audience. This is clearly a production that belongs to this city and is a source of great pride for Calgarians. It was for me the sign that this is a community that embraces the arts and values the importance of theatre as a part of a creative life. This is a city that I could call home. One year later, I am more convinced than ever that this community remains vibrant, resilient, and hopeful. We will weather this challenging period together. In doing so, we will take time to enjoy what we have. This includes our families and neighbours, and also the artistic expressions that inspire and remind us of what makes us human and help us to see more clearly the promise of a brighter tomorrow. Let your heart be open to the promise that this show illuminates. And then let us all make it happen together. To you and yours, best wishes for a holiday season. COLLEEN A. A COMMUNITY EFFORT AN INTERVIEW WITH JAMES MCARA by Zachary Moull The CEO of the Calgary Food Bank since 2007, James McAra is on the front lines of the city’s cycles of boom and bust. We spoke with him about the Food Bank’s work and our Toonies for Turkeys connection. What’s a typical day at the Calgary Food Bank? A typical day is asking one question: did we feed somebody? When we start the day, we know something’s going to happen in the city of Calgary that we have no control over. But whether it happens to an individual, to a family, or to another agency, we know that we have the food that they’ll need in order to get past whatever crisis it is, or whatever root cause has driven them to need the food. So that’s how I start every day: “We need to feed somebody. Let’s do it today.” How do you accomplish that? It’s always been a community effort. When you look at the history of food banks in Canada and in Calgary, it actually sounds like the start of a bad joke: “A rabbi, a priest, and a bishop...” It started as the Calgary Interfaith Community Action Association during the downturn in the early 1980s, and from that grew a huge number of great community initiatives. People came together and asked “how are we going to make sure we have enough to help our neighbours ride this rough patch out?”
James McAra, Calgary Food Bank CEO. Photos by Meghan McMaster.
How would you describe the role that food banks play in our social safety net? Governments don’t fund food. There is little or no food policy in Canada that deals with the need for emergency food. We talk about welfare, we talk about social assistance, we talk about employment engagement, but all that is typically based on an asset-strip model, which means that you have to prove that you’re destitute before you can get any kind of assistance. A food bank will help prevent you from getting to that point.
you’re not going to have gangrene. These little things that seem incidental can have a massive impact on the trajectory of a family, not just on their survival but on their ability to participate in the community. The cast’s Toonies for Turkeys initiative has raised 1.6 million for the Calgary Food Bank since 1997. What does that connection mean for you?
More and more, the research is showing that prevention is the way. It takes a huge amount of resources to pick someone up, but it only takes a little bit to get someone through a hard time. You can see that in A Christmas Carol, where generosity has tremendous effect. And in the play, it all starts with two people going door to door, trying put something together for those less fortunate than they are. That’s a statement about how they want their community to be. When you watch the Cratchits struggling to make ends meet, what do you feel? Anger. I see a situation where, but for a small change in an attitude, leadership could effect change. It’s not a physical anger, but it’s a feeling within me that you should not have to trip on your employee or your neighbour to find out that they’re impoverished or that they need a little bit of help. Seeing the Cratchits struggling, you realize that because of a TB shot, you’re not going to have tuberculosis. Because of a bandage,
It’s phenomenal. It’s become a critical part of our year and it’s with a group of people who care deeply, from the performers to the theatre company to the audience members. I go to the show, and many of our staff and volunteers go to the show, so we watch it change and grow every year. There’s so much life in it, and we get to play in that world for a brief period of time and celebrate and share it with Calgary.

CHARLES DICKENS AND THE SPIRIT OF CHRISTMAS Charles Dickens formed the idea for a Christmas book in 1843, after visiting one of London’s grimmest schools and travelling to Manchester at the height of the Industrial Revolution. Having grown up in a poor family, Dickens was dismayed by the poverty that still surrounded him, with children working in factories and mines and thousands of people relying on soup kitchens every day. In a time of great change, traditional family connections had frayed as large numbers of people moved to the cities in search of work. Widespread hardship made holiday celebrations a distant memory for many families. With A Christmas Carol, Dickens sought to raise “the Ghost of an Idea” of seasonal charity and fellowship. Dickens Charles Dickens in 1842, sketched by his sister Fanny. was passionate about the project, so much so that when customs, its social and charitable his publisher expressed grave observances, were in danger of decay, doubts, he put his own finances on this is the book that would give them the line to print the book himself, a new lease.” commissioning illustrations and handpicking a festive red and gold Dickens became so connected to the cover. After two months of hard work, spirit of the holiday that, upon news six thousand copies were published of his death in 1870, a costermonger’s on December 19, 1843 – and every girl in London was heard to exclaim, single one was sold by Christmas Day. “Dickens dead? Then will Father Christmas die too?” It is indeed The book’s message of Yuletide difficult to imagine Christmas generosity captured the hearts of without Dickens and his beloved readers and critics alike. As the poet story of redemption and goodwill. Thomas Hood wrote, “If Christmas, with its ancient and hospitable
DID YOU KNOW? Carols are songs of joy and praise that often have a religious theme or lesson. The Christmas tradition of singing carols from door to door is hundreds of years old!
The Poor Law forced many poor people in Dickens’ day into prisonlike workhouses, where they were given meagre food and shelter in exchange for hard labour.
Wassail is a festive drink of ale or wine sweetened with sugar and flavoured with spices. The word comes from the Norse ves heill, which means “be of good health.”
Bob is slang for a shilling, quid is slang for a pound, and 20 shillings make one pound. Bob Cratchit is paid only 15 shillings a week, while a typical clerk in the 1840s would have made around 25 shillings a week.

CHRISTMAS WITH THE LITTLE PRINCE AN INTERVIEW WITH JAMES D. REID AND NICHOLAS LLOYD WEBBER This Christmas at Theatre Calgary will be one of the most thrilling ever, with rehearsals for the world premiere of The Little Prince – The Musical in full swing. James D. Reid and Nicholas Lloyd Webber, who adapted Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s beloved story and composed the musical’s songs, are arriving from London to rehearse over the holidays with director Dennis Garnhum and a cast of 17 extraordinary performers from across Canada. The rehearsal period is a busy time filled with hard work and discovery, but there will be a chance for celebration as well. With three days off over Christmas itself, much of the creative team will head west to the mountains to spend the holiday in the magic of the Canadian Rockies. What’s most exciting about starting rehearsals? Seeing six years of work start to come alive! To hear the songs being sung, the characters breathing, the choreography, the designs being built, the band playing – it all awaits us in rehearsals. This is the most fun part. Our sweat and tears have dried and we get to watch everything unfold. It’s fun, scary, frustrating, and exhilarating.
What else are you hoping to do while you’re in Calgary? We’re looking forward to going into the mountains if we’re able. And my [James’s] old flatmate and good friend John is a big ice hockey fan, so I’m hoping he’ll take us to see a Flames game. Do you have a favourite Christmas Carol? James: It’s a close tie between “I Saw Three Ships” and “O Come, O Come Emmanuel.” The first always reminds me of Christmas days when I was a child and the latter just has the coolest tune of any carol I know – and it’s about six hundred years old. Nicholas: My favourite is “In the Bleak Midwinter,” words by Christina Rossetti, set to music by Gustav Holst. What would you give the Little Prince for Christmas? His Rose – but, alas, that is never to be... or is it? We’ll never know.

HERE’S YOUR CUE with QUENTIN PITTMAN & JODY WOOD Quentin is a neuro scientist with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute at the University of Calgary and Jody is a specialist for inclusive learning. They have been living in Calgary since 1980.
What do you love about this city? Calgary has a vibrant and dynamic feel and it’s close to the Rockies. It’s a great city to raise a family.
What first got you interested in coming to the theatre? We have been Theatre Calgary subscribers since 1980, but have always had a love for live theatre. Quentin attended the theatre when he was doing his graduate degree by taking advantage of the subsidized student ticket prices in the early 70s. We have always been live theatre goers wherever we’ve lived.
What keeps you coming back as subscribers? We enjoy it so much. We like the blend of traditional core theatre with shows like The Great Gatsby and the risky provocative ones like The Overcoat. We enjoy having a rounded out feel to the season where you can get a variety of experiences.
The tagline for our year-end campaign is MY CALGARY includes a vibrant arts scene. How does this resonate with you? We feel it is an important part of a city’s culture. If a city lacks an arts scene, it lacks a heart. Live theatre promotes discussion, it inspires creativity in others, and it’s an essential part of the education system too.
“If a city lacks an arts scene, it lacks a heart.” The arts are an essential and important part of providing a good quality of life to the people who live here. The arts are an important part of what a city should offer – enticing intelligent, interesting, and creative people to live and work in a city.
Why do you make a donation in support of Theatre Calgary’s year-end campaign? We want to ensure the continuation of the arts in our community. We feel it’s important to remind people that the arts wouldn’t survive without philanthropy.
“The arts wouldn’t survive without philanthropy.” How do you think the turbulent Calgary economy is affecting charitable organizations like Theatre Calgary? Quentin: I’m sure it’s not good. But one of the good things about Calgary is that we have a lot of great role models from corporations, to individuals alike who continue to give. It gives me confidence to know that there are still organizations and individuals out there that will continue to support the arts community even in times like these.
What would you say to others to encourage them to support Theatre Calgary? Giving to the arts makes you feel like you are a part of your community; you’re part of the team that’s helping to build a better Calgary.
Is there anything else you’d like to add? We love going to the theatre. The shows are great; you can see that there are always people who enjoy being there which creates such a wonderful energy. Theatre can be so thought provoking; oftentimes we find ourselves discussing a show we’ve seen for weeks after. It’s important to us that the ticket prices are affordable here, and not so expensive that only the wealthy can afford to go, and we realize that’s made possible because of the philanthropic spirit of many Calgarians.
MY CALGARY INCLUDES A VIBRANT ARTS SCENE! Have you ever pondered what makes Calgary a great place to live? Answers to this question often include proximity to the mountains, career opportunities, safe neighborhoods, abundant parks, and friendly people. High on people’s list is also a vibrant arts and culture community. Calgarians are proud of the quality and diversity of arts and culture opportunities that exist here. And Theatre Calgary is an integral part of that mix. This season Theatre Calgary will present 180 performances; employ more than 150 artists and craftsmen; mentor 11 aspiring actors; offer professional development to local artists; engage with more than 8,000 students, 1,500 seniors and 4,000 theatre enthusiasts who participate in our interACTive programs; and work collaboratively with numerous community organizations. To do this successfully, we rely on the engaged participation of 500 volunteers, 30 board members, 10,000 subscribers, thousands of ticket purchasers, visionary corporate sponsors, and hundreds of generous donors. Theatre Calgary is deeply engaged in this community and strives to have a meaningful impact. We depend on a caring community in order to thrive – today and into the future. This year has been challenging for us, as for many others in Calgary. As 2015 draws to a close we are asking for your assistance, as a supporter, to help us through these tough times. Please consider championing Theatre Calgary by making a donation to supporting our work in this community. Whether you make a gift of $50 or take a leadership role by joining the Artistic Champions, every gift is appreciated. To make a donation or learn more about how your gift can make a difference, visit theatrecalgary.com or call 403-294-7440, ext. 1002 or email donations@theatrecalgary.com

LOCAL STORIES
A CHERISHED FAMILY TRADITION by Patrick MacEachern If you are reading this, you are probably in the theatre lobby, or in your seats with your family or friends who mean very much to you, about to take in Theatre Calgary’s A Christmas Carol. If this is your first time seeing this production – welcome! I hope the show moves you, as it has moved me. I look forward to this night all year, and have been for 13 years straight. This show has become a Christmas tradition for me and my father. Every year, he and I get dressed up to the nines in our best suits and matching fedoras, have a great meal at a great restaurant, and then come and watch A Christmas Carol together, just the two of us. We chat and laugh and get to truly check in with each other. We share what we were blessed with in the past year and what we hope for the coming one. My dad listens and warmly shares his wisdom. I listen and respectfully – and usually naively – claim “I know what I’m doing!” Then we come to this beautiful theatre, full of other friends and families, and we share together a great classic about the human spirit, compassion, and charity. Every year, my father and I walk away filled with gratitude for the past and hope for the future. This is my most cherished family tradition, and trust me, my family has many of them! But it is not Christmas for us without Theatre Calgary’s A Christmas Carol. So as you enjoy this production for the first time, or once again, Merry Christmas from me, my father, and my entire family.
Top to bottom: Patrick and his father Joseph MacEachern enjoying their Carol tradition in 2006, 2010, and 2013.
Patrick MacEachern is a Calgary actor and musician and works as a Case Manager at the Calgary Alpha House Society.
