WELCOME As our season comes to a close, we proudly present one of the most beautifully stirring musicals ever written, The Light in the Piazza. Set in 1950s Italy, this musical evokes the sounds, colours and flavours of the country and the period. Written just over a decade ago, it’s quickly become a highly beloved and popular staple of the musical theatre world. How wonderful that we can share it with Calgary for the very first time. Looking back on this past season, we’ve encountered so many great and surprising stories. We’ve met wickedly funny characters in a grocery store (The Shoplifters), and experienced a morality tale of harrowing proportions (The Crucible). We’ve held our breath as we’ve traveled through the universe (The Little Prince), and shared the tension of four young people struggling with their faith and family (Bad Jews). And the inimitable Stephen Hair continued his Scroogerly ways (A Christmas Carol). As always, we are deeply grateful for your support as we take you on these emotional and theatrical journeys. So to close our year together, we think it’s fitting to take you on a musical voyage of love. Everything about The Light in the Piazza is deceptively and delightfully simple; yet what appears as a very gentle story quickly reveals deeper emotional depth. I hope it enchants you. DENNIS GARNHUM Artistic Director
LOOKING AHEAD We’ve announced next season’s selection of plays. It’s a glorious mix of exciting productions. From the inspiring and hilarious ‘da Kink in my Hair, the spell-binding explosion of BOOM, the insider’s view of private meetings in The Audience, the world-premiere adaptation of the best-selling A Thousand Splendid Suns, to a musical celebration with Crazy for You – I think it’s our most thrilling season yet.

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S NOTES The arts play an integral role in connecting people and shaping great cities. Benjamin R. Barber, political theorist and author, once said, “Cities are defined by communication, exchange, and association. They were founded around culture, that’s why they are centers of civilization, so they are not a peripheral external that can be related to cities, they are at the core of what a city is. A city without art and culture is unthinkable, art and culture not in the city is unthinkable, so they are twin dimensions of what cities are about.” Think of your experience at the theatre today as the opportunity to travel to great cities – from Calgary, to Florence and Rome. The latter, being two of the greatest cities for art and architecture, and our city, one of the world’s most livable, thanks in great part to our willingness to embrace art and creativity in our everyday lives. Art and culture are indeed signifiers of each city, attracting investment, tourists and creative workers, but they also make our lives worth living. They move us, inspire us, challenge us, and sometimes make the impossible, possible. We are blessed to have so many wonderful artists, arts organizations, and arts champions in this city, but even more are needed to gain international recognition for our thriving arts and culture community. Theatre Calgary’s world premiere production of The Little Prince, which welcomed 30,004 guests from seven provinces, 11 states, and several different countries, proves that we have the skill and talent locally to play on the world stage. We need more of these international collaborations, just as we need more poetry readings, art galleries, and arts education programs. If you believe that, by coming to see our production today, your day has become brighter and your city made better, we urge you to spread the word, come back again, and better yet, support your local arts organizations so that our city will continue to grow and thrive on par with all other world-class cities, just like Florence and Rome! Enjoy, COLLEEN A. SMITH Executive Director

NOTES FROM THE DIRECTOR My first significant encounter with The Light in the Piazza was as an audience member in Toronto, when I saw a simple and beautiful production by a company called Acting Up Stage. I knew only the very basic outline of the story when I sat down in the theatre, and I was not prepared for where the story – and my emotions – would take me by the end of the evening.
Michael Shamata (centre), directs the cast during rehearsal.
I fell madly in love with the romantic nature of this musical. I can’t believe how lucky I am to have this opportunity to direct it, and to direct it here at Theatre Calgary, where the standard of work is so exceptional. Very few theatres in Canada could come close to producing the kind of work you see in this set and these costumes. This is a dream come true! I want to thank Dennis Garnhum, who has been so good to me over the years, and my dear friend Lesley MacMillan – the best Producer in Canada. I also want to acknowledge that first production I saw of Piazza, directed by Robert McQueen. We are fortunate to share their Musical Director, Jonathan Monro, and two of their cast members: Tracy Michailidis and Michael Torontow. May this production make you fall in love with The Light in the Piazza the way I did! CAPTURING THE LIGHT By Shari Wattling
In the introduction to her novella The Light in the Piazza, American author Elizabeth Spencer writes, “The first time I saw Italy was in August of 1949. Italians were glad to be alive in a life that was possible to live, and their gladness filled the air and reached out to all corners.” The – Adam Guettel warmth and beauty of Italian culture and landscape, along with this sense of awakening to life, inspired Spencer’s writing a decade later, during her first cold and dark winter after moving to Montreal. The Light in
the Piazza, so full of the light of Italy, was published in The New Yorker in 1960. It was released as a novella the following year and was soon made into a Hollywood film starring Olivia de Havilland, George Hamilton, and Yvette Mimieux.
“The sounds of being in love were waiting to spill out of me.”

After reading the story in The New Yorker, writercomposer Mary Rodgers suggested a musical adaptation to her father, the legendary composer Richard Rodgers (Oklahoma!, South Pacific). The elder Rodgers found the story and the idea “lovely, but not for him.” Almost forty years later, in 1998, she made the same suggestion to her son, composer Adam Guettel (Floyd Collins, Myths and Hymns), who was looking for his next creative project. “The sounds of being in love were waiting to spill out of me,” Guettel later said. “I wanted to find a vessel for those sounds.” At his mother’s suggestion, Guettel read the novella and was instantly drawn to it, sensing that he had “the sounds available” to capture the hope and romance of the characters. Guettel contacted Elizabeth Spencer and inquired about getting the stage rights. “He seemed very eager about it, and he was a very attractive young man,” recalls Spencer, “But he looked much younger than he was, and I thought, ‘He’s too young to do all that.’” Thankfully, a bit of research and some CDs of Guettel’s earlier work convinced Spencer to grant permission.

After several attempts to find a writing partner, Guettel connected with playwright Craig Lucas (Prelude to a Kiss, Reckless) and they began a three-year process of adapting the book into a musical. The play premiered at Seattle’s Intiman Theatre in 2003, and then underwent further development before appearing at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre in 2004. The following year, the Lincoln Center Theater invited the production to New York, with Kelli O’Hara, Victoria Clark, and Matthew Morrison in the leading roles. The production was nominated for multiple major theatre awards, receiving six Tony and five Drama Desk Awards in 2005. In 2006, the New York production was broadcast on the PBS television series Lincoln Center Live, drawing more than two million viewers. On accepting the Tony Award for Best Original Score, Adam Guettel remarked, “As a writer, you feel so happy just to have people take your show to heart.” For Elizabeth Spencer, the musical captured the essence of her original story and the sensations
she felt in Italy so many decades ago: “Though we’re really worlds from each other, he got it. That’s the amazing thing. The music is just soaring; it catches you up right away. It’s almost miraculous.”
THE SIGHTS OF FLORENCE Florence is renowned as the birthplace of the Renaissance and is a popular tourist destination for lovers of art and culture. The capital of the central Italian region of Tuscany, Florence rose to economic power in the 14th century and reached its zenith during the ascendancy of the powerful Medici family, who ruled the city for much of the 15th through 17th centuries. The family’s patronage of the arts and support for new explorations in science and architecture were central to the rise of humanism and the flourishing of ideas that we now call the Renaissance (rebirth). Their legacy can be seen in every corner of Florence, and beyond.

PIAZZA DELLA SIGNORIA This public square has been the heart of political, cultural, and social life in Florence for centuries. At its centre is the Palazzo Vecchio (Old Palace), which was once the residence of Cosimo I de Medici, the first Grand Duke of Florence, and still serves as city hall today. All around the square stand statues by famous Florentine artists, as well as antique Roman sculptures. Michelangelo’s famous statue of David stood in this square from 1504 to 1873 when, like many of the original statues, it was moved inside for preservation and replaced with a copy.
THE UFFIZI GALLERY The world’s finest collection of Italian Renaissance paintings lives at the Uffizi Gallery, alongside an impressive collection of sculptures, drawings, and prints. Masterpieces by the likes of Raphael, Botticelli, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Caravaggio grace its halls. The building was commissioned by Cosimo I de Medici in the 16th century to house magisterial offices (Uffizi means ‘offices’ in Italian), and many of the works on display were once part of the Medici family’s vast private collection.

THE DUOMO One of the largest churches in the world, the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore is nicknamed “the Duomo” for its enormous brick dome, designed and engineered by Florentine architect Filippo Brunelleschi. The massive structure is more than 100 metres tall and contains at least four million bricks. Its completion in the 15th century was a major moment in architectural history and one of the landmark achievements of the Renaissance.
A large public square created as a result of a late-19th century urban redevelopment plan, the Piazza della Repubblica is home to many shops and cafés. It has been a favourite meeting spot for artists and writers since the early 20th century, and today it is a lively public gathering place.
PIAZZALE MICHELANGELO A hilltop square overlooking Florence and the valley of the Arno River, the Piazzale Michelangelo’s stunning panoramic views make it popular with tourists and locals alike, especially at sunset.

the audience By Peter Morgan Directed by Miles Potter
“Wonderfully funny and genuinely moving.” – DaIly telegraph For sixty years Queen Elizabeth II has held a private weekly meeting with each of her many Prime Ministers. Through this riveting drama, we get a glimpse at the woman behind the crown and what it’s like to be one of the most famous, and yet most private people in the world. Elegant, majestic, and highly illuminating. I am fascinated by two women on this project: the elusive Queen Elizabeth and the remarkable actor who will take on this role, Seana McKenna. This is an actor and a role you’ll not soon forget. – DennIs

HERE’S YOUR CUE with Brian Humphreys of Nexen Brian joined Nexen in 2007 and has been Vice President, External Relations since 2014. Brian holds a master’s degree in political science from the University of Alberta, as well as a bachelor of political science from Carleton University. Originally a native of Toronto, Brian has called Calgary home since 2000.
Why does Nexen feel it’s important to support the community? Our world is predominantly comprised of generous and caring people, and that includes the employees of Nexen and our parent company CNOOC Limited. We genuinely want others to do well in life – including our families, neighbours, colleagues and the rest of society. So in short, supporting our communities’ needs and aspirations is integrally connected to our own measure of success as a company.
As a global company, how do you balance local community investment with your role on the international stage? That’s easy. Being successful at meeting community needs and aspirations globally is simply a by-product of meeting those needs locally – ranging from our areas of operations in Western Canada to our activities in the UK, the US, West Africa and beyond.
Why has your company chosen to include arts and culture as part of its community investment? Arts are about community aspirations. It’s about wonderful opportunities to
Brian Humphreys, Vice President, External Relations at Nexen, a CNOOC Limited company.
witness, celebrate, explore and even evolve who we are. This involves music, theatre, dance and new forms yet to be created. We are proud to play a part in this by supporting many local arts and artists in their endeavours.
Nexen has been a sponsor of Theatre Calgary for many years and is greatly appreciated as a major contributor to our success on stage. Can you speak to the value of these long-term relationships from your perspective? Nexen has been a sponsor of Theatre Calgary since 1996. Longterm relationships like this one are tremendously rewarding because we are able to see how our contribution has positively impacted the success and sustainability of an organization. In turn, these organizations are able to plan more strategically for their own growth and development because they can count on stable support for a number of years.
Do your employees enjoy attending Theatre Calgary? Very much! Our employees consistently let us know how much they enjoy
Theatre Calgary productions. They and their families get to witness, celebrate and explore such wonderful talent and entertainment. They also take great pride in knowing and showing their families that part of the hard work they do every day goes to such a worthwhile cause.
“Long-term relationships like this one are tremendously rewarding because we are able to see how our contribution has positively impacted the success and sustainability of an organization.” Given the tough economy here in Alberta, what would you say to other companies to encourage them to support our communities? This is about both needs and aspirations. We have such a generous and caring corporate community in Calgary and Alberta. Each person in social need is our neighbour. As social needs have become more acute, everyone is stepping up as much as they can, including both corporate and employee fundraising drives. For Nexen, we are helping organizations deliver the full range of material needs from food and shelter, to counselling, special needs and more. On the aspirational side of things, affordable and accessible arts and culture give families a place to enjoy themselves
and feel connected to everyone else regardless of means or backgrounds. Meeting both these needs and aspirations are essential. Ultimately, I’d encourage everyone to ask themselves how much better do you feel about you and your family’s well-being by knowing that others around you are also doing well?
Saluting our Corporate Sponsors Calgary’s remarkable, vibrant arts and culture sector is made possible by visionary companies like Nexen. These companies help us to find the great stories of our time, draw together creative people, and allow something magical to happen. Theatre Calgary is grateful to our sponsors for their leadership in strengthening this community. By investing in imagination and creativity, they are helping us to make sense of the world, challenging our preconceptions and stirring deep emotions. We are all beneficiaries. LOCAL STORIES
COMING HOME TO ITALY by Luigi Riscaldino This lovely play takes place in Florence in 1953. At about the same time, another love story was unfolding in Italy. My mother, Anna Maria, worked as a hair dresser in her late teens in Turin (in a shop that also provided wigs for theatre!). She became friends with a co-worker, a young lady who Luigi on Florence's Ponte Vecchio, introduced my mom to overlooking the Arno River, in 2008. her brother Valerio (my father). They fell in love and even had their own piazza – Piazza Carlo Alberto near where they lived. They were married in 1956, and two years later, they emigrated to Canada. While I was raised in Canada, the blood that runs through my veins is 100% Italian. Whenever I visit Italy, an almost surreal feeling hits me – that I have come home. I feel something inside me begin to intensely resonate with the world around me. Even in Canada, my parents raised me as they were raised in Italy (and with Italian as my mother tongue). That must be why I feel the way I do when in Italy – that or some primeval genetic connection to the air, water, people, and FOOD! As an actor in Calgary, I rarely get to connect with my heritage, in theatre or otherwise, so I have been relishing this opportunity. I commend the actors I’ve coached for embracing this culture so passionately. Let them take you on a trip through a beautiful story in a beautiful land. Grazie mille, Theatre Calgary! Luigi Riscaldino is a local actor and the Italian Coach for Theatre Calgary’s The Light in the Piazza.
