Welcome. Among the great joys of our work at Theatre Calgary is the opportunity to launch a new play on our stage. This joy is magnified when that production subsequently moves on to other stages across the country. This has certainly been the case with Rick Miller’s BOOM. We were thrilled to present the first performances of this production in 2014, as part of our partnership with One Yellow Rabbit and the High Performance Rodeo. Since then, BOOM has become a sensation on numerous stages in Canada and the United States. From the start, it was easy for me to see why this would be the case. Rick Miller is truly a one-of-a-kind performer. His inimitable talent, combined with remarkable creative and technical wizardry, stunningly captures the breadth of change in technology, politics, music and culture that took place over 25 years of the Baby Boom era. In doing so, he reminds us that the challenges and changes we are witnessing in our world today, are connected to the thread of our past. I’m so delighted to welcome Rick Miller and BOOM back to Calgary, and to welcome you to our theatre to be part of his return. SHARI WATTLING Interim Artistic Director

LOOKING AHEAD Our annual production of A Christmas Carol will once again fill our stage with the warmth and magic of the holiday season. The incomparable Stephen Hair returns as Ebenezer Scrooge! Join us with your family as we honour 30 years of this spirited tradition at Theatre Calgary.

Great spaces are essentially great places. Areas where we gather, socialize, entertain and be entertained. Great spaces are also comfortable, accessible and allow us ease of interacting and exchanging with one another. When they work well, great spaces act as a stage for our public lives. This summer, Theatre Calgary has undergone a number of exciting changes. You may have noticed a beautifully renovated auditorium when you returned to the theatre in September. The Max Bell Theatre now features new seats, new flooring and enhanced amenities. As audience members, your contribution through the per-ticket Capital Replacement Fee (CRF), in combination with support from the federal government, the City of Calgary, as well as support from our venue partner, Arts Commons, has made this renovation possible. We are grateful for everyone’s assistance in making the Max Bell Theatre a more comfortable and beautiful home for our work; one that honours our audiences as well as our artists. We recognize that our seating renovations, in particular, are still a work in progress, so we thank you for your ongoing support and patience in making sure your space is exactly the right place for you. We are also thankful to our friends at the Strategic Group for recognizing the need to update and refresh the W.O. Mitchell room. Together with Dialog Architects and Stuart Olson, the room has been modernized for our Dress Circle members and Artistic Champions to gather and enjoy each other’s company preshow and intermission. In recent years, we have also begun to expand our notion of space beyond our theatre’s walls. Whether our work spills into our lobbies, or to our summer Shakespeare by the Bow program on Prince’s Island (and now in St. Patrick’s Island as well!), or encompasses the inspiration that we bring to libraries, hair salons, schools, and public spaces, our idea of great spaces are ones that infuse theatre and the arts into our everyday world. As we continue to explore ways to make our spaces better for you, our audiences, we also look to ways that we can bring our work to the greater Calgary community. So watch for us in new and exciting places. We guarantee that wherever you will find us, there will be beautiful theatre and stories to behold and to enjoy! COLLEEN A. SMITH Executive Director

WRITER’S NOTES “That men do not learn very much from the lessons of history is the most important of all the lessons of history.” – Aldous Huxley (1959) Rick Miller, photo by Paul Lampert.

I’m a storyteller, not a historian. Historical facts only interest me inasmuch as they help tell a story, for stories are how we learn from our mistakes – and from each other. BOOM is a collage of stories that I’ve been documenting about the generation that immediately preceded me: stories of the famous and the not-so-famous; stories of the living and the no-longer-living. Each story in itself might be worthy of a full play, but in this case I’ve chosen to paint them into a larger picture. My hope is that by spiraling through 25 tumultuous years (1945 to 1969), we can all gain perspective not only on who we were, but who we are now, and where we’re going. Think of BOOM as a living, breathing time capsule. It starts with a ‘boom,’ it ends with a ‘boom.’ I hope it stirs up your own stories, so that we can share them together in the lobby after the show. Explosively yours, RICK MILLER Writer

RICK MILLER GOES BOOM One of Canada’s most respected interdisciplinary theatre artists, Rick Miller works as a writer, performer, and director across the country. BOOM is one of Miller’s many popular solo shows that draw from history, literature, and pop culture alike and fuse high-tech multimedia designs with his low-tech virtuosic performances. Miller’s other solo hits include MacHomer, in which he conjures dozens of voices from The Simpsons in a riotous retelling of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, and Bigger Than Jesus, a thoughtful and irreverent “multimedia mass” that explores the story of Christianity. BOOM began as a personal project for Miller, after he became fascinated by his father’s penchant for cataloguing his family’s history and its connections to world events. “I began to dig into the history, politics, and culture of the Baby Boom period,” Miller says, “and hooked into the concept of a solo documentary time capsule.” Chronicling the years from 1945 to 1969, BOOM begins with one “boom” – the atomic bombing of Hiroshima – and ends with another, more hopeful one, as the rockets of Apollo 11 take the first humans to the surface of the moon. Using his immense vocal and physical talents, Miller transforms himself into his parents and the scores of historical figures who influenced the world in which they grew up. “I felt that part of the audience experience is to be immersed in one man’s journey to rediscover his past,” says Miller. The result is a show that views the

“I think we can learn about ourselves today if we just look back and see the cycles and patterns of history.” profound and public cultural shifts of the Baby Boom era through the private lens of his own family’s story. Miller was born in 1970, just after the period he explores in BOOM, but the process of creating the show gave him insight into his own life as well. “I think we can learn about ourselves today if we just look back and see the cycles and patterns of history,” says Miller. “History repeats itself, and we become more like our parents than we wish to think.”

THE BIRTH OF THE BABY BOOMERS For two decades after World War II ended in 1945, both Canada and the United States had a strong spike in their birth rates. Fuelled by reunited families and post-war prosperity, Canada reached a peak of nearly 500,000 births per year during the 1950s – more than twice as many as some years in the 1930s or the 1970s. These "Baby Boomers," as the generation came to be called, were a demographic shockwave that forced dramatic changes in North American schools, workplaces, politics, and cultural life. “There were so many of them born in such a short time,” says BOOM creator Rick Miller, “that they were able (and still are able) to remodel society as they pass through it.” Historian Anthony Esler writes that a generation is “an age group shaped by history.” The Baby Boomers were shaped by a tumultuous era, growing up in the shadow of the Cold War and learning to “duck and cover” under their school desks in case of nuclear attacks. But all the same, the post-war era was generally an optimistic time, with a growing economy and exciting technological advancements. Baby Boomers, many of whom were raised in new family-oriented suburbs, were the first children to own transistor radios and grow up with television. They basked in a powerful youth culture that built a sense of common identity across the continent, laying the groundwork for them to rally and organize in support of shared ideals once they came of age.

As Baby Boomers grew up, Miller says, “all the big stories of the time – the Cold War, the Space Race, Vietnam, the Civil Rights Movement, the birth of rock and roll – started spiralling together in this fusion of politics and culture.” Especially on university campuses, where the three protagonists of BOOM find themselves in the late 1960s, some Baby Boomers revelled in counterculture, felt a strong distrust of adult authority, and voiced their political dissent. These student activists lent their youth and energy to ongoing causes such as civil rights, women’s rights, environmentalism, and nuclear disarmament, and played a key role in the protest movement against the Vietnam War. In his Baby Boom history Born at the Right Time, Doug Owram suggests that counterculture hippies and activists were always the minority, especially in Canada. But while the political views of any age group are far from monolithic, he writes, “the radicalism of the sixties shaped the ethics of a generation and defined the political agenda for the next decades.”

TALKIN’ ‘BOUT MY GENERATION Categorizing people by age group can be a challenging and problematic proposition, since generational thinking tends to elide the specificity of experience based on gender, class, ethnicity, or geographic location. According to historian Doug Owram, Baby Boomers were unusual in their strong self-identity as a generation, and their legacy has led thinkers to try to define the generations that have come after them. “The very fact that we are continuing to discuss issues along generational lines,” writes Owram, “reflects the powerful hold the Baby Boom had.” These are the best-known names for the next generations: Generation X: Originally called “Baby Busters,” Generation X was born as birth rates lowered in the late 1960s and 1970s. They had the economic disadvantage of following the large Boom generation into the workplace, and have been said to have a less optimistic worldview. The term was popularized by Canadian writer Douglas Coupland, who said that the ‘X’ stood for the generation’s desire not to be defined.

Millennials: First known as “Generation Y,” Millennials were born in the 1980s and `90s, and many are children of Baby Boomers. Growing up during the rise of the internet and the advent of cell phones, they are often characterized as a generation oriented towards technology. They were hard hit by the economic downturn of the early 21st century and may end up as the first modern North American generation to be less well off than their parents. Historians Neil Howe and William Strauss coined the term, based on this group being the first to come of age in the new millennium. There’s no consensus yet on what to call those born after the late 1990s, who are still in school today. “Generation Z” and “Post-Millennials” have been used as placeholders, but names that refer to previous generations don’t tend to stick. One frontrunner is the “iGeneration” – a reference to mobile devices, as well as interactivity, interconnectedness, and individuality. Do you identify as a member of a particular generation? What qualities or perspectives do you share with people in your age group? Editorial provided by Zachary Moull, a Calgary-based director/dramaturg and former Artistic Associate at Theatre Calgary. For more information, download our BOOM play guide at theatrecalgary.com

OLIVIER BOURQUE Stage & Production Manager Having graduated in 2009 in Stage and Technical Management, Olivier Bourque was given the opportunity to work at the heart of Ex Machina, Robert Lepage’s production company. His first years there were spent as the head stage technician in operas and large-scale touring productions. In 2012, a first occasion arose in which he could combine his passion for work and travel: he began to tour with Lepage’s acclaimed Andersen Project in the United States. Since then, his taste for ‘the road’ has only multiplied. He began working as a stage manager and technical director on smaller projects, notably with Québécois companies touring youth theatre to Eastern Canada. Always on the hunt for new challenges, Olivier then joined Rick Miller’s BOOM team as the stage and production manager, no small feat given the show’s technical complexity.

THE AUDIENCE By Peter Morgan

January 24 to February 18

Directed by Miles Potter Through this riveting performance, we get a glimpse of the woman behind the crown and what it’s like to be one of the most famous, and yet most private people in the world. For sixty years Queen Elizabeth II has held a private weekly meeting with each of her many Prime Ministers. Politicians have come and gone, but a constant she has remained. Elegant, majestic, and highly illuminating. Peter Morgan is the writer of the popular film The Queen, and creator and writer of the new Netflix series The Crown.

HERE’S YOUR CUE Interview with Dr. Ian Lo & Elaine Lam Ian and Elaine are from Ontario. Ian is an Orthopedic Surgeon and Elain is a Chartered Accountant. They have been living in Calgary since 2003. How long have you been subscribers and Dress Circle members? e became subscribers in 2012 and W joined the Dress Circle a year later. We were introduced to the Dress Circle by board member Norm Schachar and his wife Kathy. ave you always been interested in H live theatre? e started going to live theatre in W London, ON, when we were dating, but I [Elaine] did some acting in school. It’s an art form we really appreciate and have seen elsewhere in Canada and the US.

“We hope that by supporting Theatre Calgary with our Dress Circle membership the theatre will always be there for us.”

What importance do you think performing arts play in our community? I t fosters creativity, personal growth and an innovative way of thinking. Each show is a different experience for every person.

Dr. Ian Lo & Elaine Lam

o you find it hard sometimes to D balance work, kids and having a social life, and coming to the theatre and the W.O. Mitchell Room a break from all of that? e do not do a good job of balancing W everything because sometimes it all happens at once, but Theatre Calgary make it easy to manage and rearrange tickets when necessary, which helps us keep that important ‘date night.’ Theatre Calgary, with the Dress Circle, makes that date night easy and enjoyable for us. hat’s the best part about coming W into the W.O. Mitchell Room? I t’s a meeting place for friends; you end up knowing everyone who’s in there. It’s not like being out in the other part of the lobby where you don’t really get to know anyone. We love the renovations. It’s modern and refreshing; we really like the new layout. It has a nice loungy, living room feel; and it’s a great place to be. It’s a nice hosting space too. When we bring guests they are always impressed. The W.O. Mitchell Room is just so welcoming.

ho do you think should be a W member of the Dress Circle, and why? We think everyone should be a member of the Dress Circle. It gives you a sense of ownership and community. It’s a more personal experience, and you feel connected to the theatre. We hope that by supporting Theatre Calgary with our Dress Circle membership the theatre will always be there for us. We feel it is as much a private responsibility as it is corporate and government to make sure that the arts are funded adequately. We know that in tough economic times corporate and government funding dwindles and it’s the individuals that need to help fill that gap. re there any plays that stand out in A your mind? e loved the Tosca Café, Enron, The W Great Gatsby, and Cats. I [Ian] always love the musicals, that’s what made ‘da Kink in my Hair so great for me! We are really looking forward to seeing Crazy for You. The Artistic Director does such a great job of bringing a wonderful variety of shows to the stage. What do you think about the caliber of the plays Theatre Calgary presents? e are completely blown away by W the talent on the Theatre Calgary stage. We just loved the opening night performance of ‘da Kink in my Hair. We consider ourselves lucky to have a theatre like this in our city that showcases such amazing talent. I s there anything else you would like to add? ank you for continue to bring such Th great work to the stage. We always know we are in for a treat. The theatre is well run and professionally put together. We are proud to be a part of it.
