January 24 to February 18
Directed by Miles Potter Through this riveting performance, we get a glimpse of the woman behind the crown and what it’s like to be one of the most famous, and yet most private people in the world. For sixty years Queen Elizabeth II has held a private weekly meeting with each of her many Prime Ministers. Politicians have come and gone, but a constant she has remained. Elegant, majestic, and highly illuminating. Peter Morgan is the writer of the popular film The Queen, and creator and writer of the new Netflix series The Crown.

Welcome. This year marks the 30th year that Theatre Calgary has presented A Christmas Carol. Over the past three decades, it has become much more than just a presentation on our stage: it has become a treasured tradition for so many families, and our city. Hundreds of thousands of Calgarians have attended the production (many coming year after year), and more than 500 artists have been involved in telling Dickens’ timeless tale. I remember seeing my first Theatre Calgary Carol so many years ago–not the very first production, mind you, but the first in this theatre. I remember marvelling at the magic and spirit of the play, and at the heart of the story. Since that first experience in the audience, I’ve had the extraordinary pleasure to appear in Carol as an actor, to work on this adaptation as a dramaturg, and now to welcome you to our theatre as the Interim Artistic Director. I still marvel at the magic in every performance, and thrill at the joy that happens when we gather together to share in this story. It’s a powerful reminder that togetherness is what makes our world a better place. In today’s world and economy, I can’t think of a more valuable message of hope and giving. From all of us at Theatre Calgary, thank you for sharing part of your season with us, and warmest wishes for a joyous New Year. SHARI WATTLING Interim Artistic Director
LOOKING AHEAD Her Majesty is coming to Theatre Calgary in The Audience. I always feel like A Christmas Carol is my anniversary with Theatre Calgary. Even though I began my work here in late February 2015, this production was indeed my first experience in the Max Bell Theatre as I attended this production the November prior. It was a beautiful, snowy evening and I was so taken with the play, the performances, and the sense of family in the theatre. I was hooked! Carol is as much a time for our team to gather and reflect on another incredible year, as it is for the community to come together in our theatre. We remain humbled by so many Calgarians’ dedication to the show – we are so honoured that you have chosen Carol to be part of your holiday tradition and glad to celebrate yet another season with your family. Last year we began asking Carol audiences who amongst them were attending our production for the very first time. The response was absolutely overwhelming. In a city of more than 1.2 million people, and with 30 years and more than 750 performances, so many Calgarians are still discovering this beloved holiday classic for the very first time. Even during tough economic times, families still want to experience joy, hope and a belief in the goodness of humanity. This is the heart of this story, and Calgarians continue to come out, year after year, to watch Stephen Hair, our Scrooge, make us believe. And for those of us whose friends and families are distant, stepping into the theatre often brings about a sense of unity. As if – over a period of two hours – we are all together as a family with a sense of compassion and belonging. This is the power of theatre, the power of live performance. We thank all of you for coming on this, our 30th anniversary of the show. Whether you are here with a loved one, a friend, your family, or you have come to be a part of our larger family – you are always welcome at Theatre Calgary. For those of you new to us, we are so thankful that you came. For those of you returning, we are so grateful for your support. From our Theatre Calgary family to yours, we wish you the healthiest and most hopeful of holidays. #loveYYC COLLEEN A. SMITH Executive Director

DIRECTOR’S NOTES A Christmas Carol has been a triumphant, longstanding tradition here at Theatre Calgary and there have been many versions throughout the years. I wrote this adaptation six years ago, specifically with a Calgary audience in mind. I set it in a winter wonderland – snow and ice covering everything you see. You’ll notice at the beginning that Scrooge resists everyone and everything, including the weather. As he grows into understanding, he discovers a new perspective on the cold winter around him. It’s my reminder that Calgary has beautiful, stunning winters with bright blue skies. It’s simply a matter of how you choose to see the world around you, isn’t it? I hope that you might notice that this year we have made some adjustments and enhancements to the staging and scenery. We’ve added a proscenium arch to match the recent renovation of the theatre, and to present a warm frame around our story. You’ll also notice that Scrooge’s bedroom has some new elements – our ghosts like to keep you surprised at where they may turn up. One of the joys of presenting this production annually is that it affords us the opportunity to further develop a production that has actually been years in the making. We’re excited to show you the changes that we have made. One thing that isn’t changing this year is Stephen Hair starring as Scrooge. How lucky are we that Stephen continues to refresh his interpretation every year, always finding some new element to explore. For many of you, this is your first experience of A Christmas Carol at Theatre Calgary. It is my hope that we inspire you, and that it encourages you to return to all of the many other wonderful productions Theatre Calgary offers all year round. I wish nothing less than an extraordinary holiday season for you and your family. DENNIS GARNHUM Director Theatre Calgary is a resident company of Arts Commons, operating out of the Max Bell Theatre. WHAT THE DICKENS #ALBERTASTRONG by Jenna Turk, Artistic Associate
The holiday classic A Christmas Carol was inspired by both Charles Dickens’ own difficult childhood and the hardpressed London of the late 1840’s. Dickens, as a child, witnessed his father sent to a debtors’ prison. As was the custom at the time, Dickens’ mother and youngest siblings joined him. This left young Charles alone to board wherever and with whomever he could find. He was forced to quit school at the age of twelve and work ten-hour days at Warren’s Blacking Warehouse to earn his keep. Labouring in the rat-infested workhouse, preparing bottles of shoe polish (boot blacking) for purchase, Dickens observed firsthand the social injustices suffered by London’s most impoverished. Having lacked a formal education in his youth, as an adult he became a vocal advocate for children’s rights, and by 1843, the effects of the Industrial Revolution on the city’s underprivileged children were clear. An impassioned Dickens initially intended to write a pamphlet imploring the people of England to help. Fortunately for us, he decided instead that a story would have more impact. And so it did. A Christmas Carol was published 173 years ago, and remains a holiday classic that has never been out of print. To think, such a wondrous tale of the power of the Christmas spirit could have simply been a pamphlet tossed to the street!
Calgary may not be London of the 1840’s (thankfully we have the TB vaccine and gangrene is less of a problem), but we are still struggling with many of the same social issues today. The recession gripping Alberta is severe with job losses leading many to seek help from public agencies. Shelters and food banks are in demand now more than ever with a growing class of the working poor. Fortunately, Calgarians are known for their strength and resilience in hard times. In 2013, our communities mobilized when our city was overcome by mass flooding with many opening up their homes to those in need, both neighbours and strangers alike. Similarly, in May of this year, when Fort McMurray was consumed by wildfire, all of Alberta came together to support the more than 80,000 people who were displaced, many of whom had lost their homes. Calgary, in particular, offered housing to evacuees, opening the doors to four of our postsecondary institutions (the University of Calgary, SAIT, Ambrose University and Mount Royal University). Many gave generously to the Calgary Food Bank, eager to lend a hand to those in need. Here at Theatre Calgary our staff and volunteers were humbled by the overwhelming generosity of our patrons who supported the relief and recovery efforts by raising $11,598.35 for the Canadian Red Cross – funds which were then matched by the Government of Alberta. Theatre Calgary also had the pleasure of hosting Fort McMurray evacuees, as we offered them complimentary tickets to attend the theatre in hopes of uplifting their spirits.
A CHRISTMAS CAROL GLOSSARY
this facility was often shortened to “Bedlam.”
Christmas carols
During Dickens’ time, the Poor Law forced many poor people into prisonlike workhouses, where they were given meagre food and shelter in exchange for menial work.
A carol is a song of joy and praise, often with a religious theme or lesson. The Christmas tradition of door-todoor caroling dates back to the Middle Ages, and many of today’s popular carols were written in the 1800s.
Bob and quid
“Bob” is slang for a shilling. Twenty shillings make one pound, which can also be called a “quid.” Bob Cratchit earns 15 shillings a week. This is less than the average salary for a clerk in the 1840s, which was around 25 shillings a week.

Wassail
Wassail is a drink consisting of ale or wine sweetened with sugar and spices. The word comes from the Norse ves heill, which means “be of good health.”
Robinson Crusoe
Robinson Crusoe is the title character of a 1719 Daniel Defoe novel, which follows the adventures of a castaway marooned on an island for 28 years.
TIDINGS OF COMFORT AND JOY Theatre Calgary has much to celebrate this year! Not only are we on the verge of our 50th Anniversary Season, but we are also celebrating our 30th production of A Christmas Carol (the 27th production for Stephen Hair – who, prior to playing Scrooge, has played Jacob Marley, and even portrayed Charles Dickens in the first Theatre Calgary production in 1983). In the spirit of Yuletide generosity, Theatre Calgary donated 250 tickets to foster families to attend our Opening Night. We would like to wish you all a warm welcome and hope you enjoy the performance!

“I WILL HONOUR CHRISTMAS IN MY HEART” The true lesson learned by Ebenezer in A Christmas Carol is that the Christmas spirit should be carried throughout all the days of the year. With the Fezziwigs and Ebenezer’s nephew Fred leading by example, it seems a life of generosity and celebration is a life well lived. Theatre Calgary could not agree more! This year’s production of A Christmas Carol marks the 20th anniversary of our partnership with the Calgary Food Bank. Our Toonies for Turkeys fundraising campaign began in 1997, when an actor in the company, Lindsay Burns, had the thoughtful idea to collect money for the Food Bank after the show. It’s these acts of kindness that James McAra, CEO of the Calgary Food Bank, appreciates most. “Toonies for Turkeys connects the spirit of our community and our daily challenges. The awareness, the understanding, the focus on building the future all come from Theatre Calgary’s Toonies for Turkeys initiative. It is about the gift of holiday celebration and the warmth of sharing. It is the quintessential reminder that our community can care all year long.” The first year of the campaign was only done at a select few performances, but since then Toonies for Turkeys has grown to become an integral part of the annual A Christmas Carol experience. To date, Theatre Calgary staff, volunteers, and you – our audience – have helped raise more than 1.6 million dollars. Despite the financial downturn, James McAra says people are still giving, “Calgarians understand generosity. We have firsthand experience of the tragedies wrought from economic, environmental and community crisis. People give time, talent and more in proportion to their condition. Calgarians get it.” Every $2 donated allows the Calgary Food Bank to distribute $10 worth of food. After each performance, our patrons are invited to donate whatever they can to help those less fortunate in our community. Actors, still in costume and armed with baskets, fill the lobbies, and
without fail our patrons open their hearts and their pocketbooks. Some long-time subscribers even come to the show with cheques in hand! For this, we are incredibly appreciative.
CALGARY FOOD BANK In 2015, 1 in 9 Calgarians went to the Food Bank for help which is more than 140,000 people – 41% of whom were children. The Food Bank’s CEO reminds us who uses its services: “Your neighbour, a family member, you.” The Calgary Food Bank is an invaluable resource that provides emergency food hampers to the homeless, milk and formula to mothers and children in need, and meals and snacks to over 150 programs and community organizations each year. Please consider making a donation to our Toonies for Turkeys campaign, or making a donation as you do your own holiday shopping – there are non-perishable donation bins at most major grocery stores in Calgary. Also, the Calgary Food Bank welcomes donations both nonperishable and perishable made directly to their warehouse at 5000 11 Street SE (loading door 3). Check out their Wishlist for their most needed items! Additionally, if you’re feeling the pinch, McAra prompts us to remember the true spirit of giving, “You can volunteer and support your community (shovel snow, coach, pick up the mail, fix the leaky tap, read a good book with friends). Don’t worry about going it alone, we will all help.”

Scared and loving it. We didn’t invite your best friend over for a movie night. Or beg her to watch something scary. But we did power the movie that helped you realize you can get through the scary parts with a friend by your side. When the energy you invest in life meets the wind power we fuel it with, screams and giggles happen.

LOCAL STORIES A FAMILY TRADITION
Theatre Calgary’s version of A Christmas Carol has been a Clay family tradition for around 25 years. During this time, we have introduced over 200 people to theatre for the first time and some have become season ticket holders. We are excited to be introducing the next generation of the Clay family to the play. Because of the joy and unity this story provides, it has become a celebrated custom for our family to gather and celebrate Christmas.
The Clay Family
The play definitely puts everyone attending in the Christmas spirit as shown in the lobby after the performance with all of the smiles, laughter, and hugs. The casts have been impressive, and one can tell they truly enjoy performing this play. Stephen Hair has done a remarkable job of playing Scrooge over the past two decades and has made the part his own. During the play we laugh, cry, and allow Stephen and the cast to take us back to Victorian England and entertain us for a couple of hours. And at the end, we all hope we can have the same Christmas spirit as the converted Ebenezer Scrooge. This play has been and will continue to be part of our Christmas tradition for years to come. In the words of Tiny Tim, “God bless us, everyone.” We hope you all enjoy this production as much as we have. BILL & LAURIE CLAY
