In 1990, while on a royal tour of Canada, Queen Elizabeth II attended an orchestral performance at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. As a member of the front-ofhouse staff at the time, I have vivid memories of the excitement, and the overwhelming sense of importance surrounding every detail of her visit. As I stood amongst those attending to her arrival (white gloved and with rehearsed curtsy at the ready), she passed by within just a few feet. I remember being taken completely off guard in her presence. Here was the person to whom I had sang “God Save The Queen” at the start of every school day, and whose face was on our money, standing in the flesh just an arms-length away. She seemed so warm, personable, and most surprisingly . . . human. Since then, I have held great warmth for the woman behind the crown, and like so many, wondered “what must her life be like?” Peter Morgan’s wonderful play, The Audience, brings us into the private chambers of Buckingham Palace and gives us a glimpse into the complexities of being both human and royal. At the center of our production, as Queen Elizabeth, is the incomparable Seana McKenna. I have longed for us to find a project that would bring Seana to our stage, and can think of no finer actor in Canada to portray this exceptional role. I’m equally thrilled that this production stars an extraordinary ensemble of actors, many of whom are from Calgary, some returning to our stage, and some making their Theatre Calgary debut. The theatre gives us a great gift in that it allows us a front row seat at the center of our history, our present and our future. It allows us inside the most exceptional and most private lives. Today, Her Majesty the Queen awaits you. Welcome to The Audience. SHARI WATTLING Interim Artistic Director

DIRECTOR’S NOTES I find it quite reassuring, in this time of what appears to be mounting political crisis all over the globe, to be working on a play about a person who has been handed (and is handling) crises for over 60 years. It is a human trait to look on every crisis that we experience as ‘the one,’ as unique, as perhaps the crisis that will do us all in. What the character at the heart of this play has to teach us, and perhaps what she teaches each person she encounters, is that crises are experienced by human beings, and that human beings are not fixed entities that can be broken or toppled like statues, but almost infinitely malleable souls that may change and adjust as the times demand. Not an easy lesson to learn or remember, but it is helpful to have a figure at the heart of one’s political system continually reminding us, like Edgar in King Lear: “the worst is not. So long as we can say ‘this is the worst.’” Despite the sound of it, that is an optimistic message, and I find that this is a perfect time for an optimistic political message, a hopeful message, a message from a very experienced traveler in time who is still looking forward, even at the end of a long, long journey. ELIZABETH’S ROAD TO THE THRONE by Jenna Turk, Artistic Associate

King George V

King Edward VIII

As the granddaughter of King George V, Queen Elizabeth II lived a life of privilege from birth; however, the course of her life changed dramatically when she was eleven years old. In 1936, her grandfather died leaving her uncle, King Edward VIII, to take his place on the throne. But, King Edward VIII loved a woman named Wallis Simpson who was a divorced American socialite, and the government would not support their union. To marry a woman with two living ex-husbands was unacceptable to the government and the crown for political, legal, religious, and moral reasons. So, on December 11th 1936, King Edward VIII abdicated the throne, rejecting his title in order to marry the love of his life – which he did the next year. They remained married until his death 35 years later. This abdication meant that his brother, King George VI, (Queen Elizabeth II’s father) ascended the throne as the new King of England, which put Queen Elizabeth II in direct line to the crown. On February 6th, 1952, after a fifteen year reign

King George VI

Queen Elizabeth II

(which included overcoming a speech-impediment, conquering World War II, and celebrating Queen Elizabeth II’s marriage to Prince Philip), King George VI died. As his eldest child, Queen Elizabeth II ascended the throne at 25 years of age. Her father had been ill for some time, suffering from stress brought on by World War II as well as general poor health exacerbated by his heavy smoking, and Elizabeth had been standing in for him at public events since 1951 (she was, in fact, on tour in Africa at the time of her father’s death), but it was nonetheless a shock. She returned home from Kenya as Queen. Queen Elizabeth II is now the longestreigning monarch in British history with 2017 marking her 65th year as the Queen of England. Throughout her reign she has witnessed her world change (the growth of the Commonwealth, the end of apartheid, and the rise of terrorist extremism) as well as her own family change (royals divorcing, Princess Diana’s death, and the addition of the Duchess of

Cambridge and the birth of her two grand children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte). There are said to be no plans for Queen Elizabeth II to abdicate, but members of the Royal

Family have already begun to take over some of her duties. After all, Queen Elizabeth II did turn 90 this past year. Longer still may she reign and long live the Queen!

“It has always been easy to hate and destroy. To build and to cherish is much more difficult.” – Queen Elizabeth II

THE AUDIENCE THROUGH THE YEARS 1936 Queen Elizabeth II’s father, King George VI takes the throne; Queen Elizabeth II is eleven. 1947 On her 21st birthday, then Princess Elizabeth is on a tour of South Africa and gives a speech broadcast on the radio proclaiming her devotion to the Commonwealth. 1952 At 25 years of age Queen Elizabeth II ascends the throne after the death of her father. Queen Elizabeth II has her first audience with Prime Minister Winston Churchill. 1953 The coronation celebration occurs, and Queen Elizabeth II becomes Queen – not just in the eyes of the people, but in the eyes of God at age 26. 1956 Prime Minister Anthony Eden colludes with France and Israel to use military force in the Suez Canal conflict with the aim of regaining Western control of Egypt and removing President Nasser from power. When the United States fails to support his actions, Eden is humiliated and Britain is no longer deemed a world power. Eden resigns the following year with his reputation for peacekeeping in foreign affairs destroyed. 1964 The Labour Party headed by Harold Wilson, Queen Elizabeth’s fifth Prime Minister wins the general election by 4 seats. 1968 Prime Minister Harold Wilson is feeling defeated and with good reason: His opponent, Edward Heath, is set to take the next election in 1970, and Wilson will be forced into the role of the Leader of the Opposition.

1975 Harold Wilson narrowly wins the 1974 General Election, and the strain leads to the deterioration of his health. 1986 The Sunday Times publishes an article claiming that a source “unprecedentedly close” to the queen said that her majesty Elizabeth II had called Prime Minister Thatcher “uncaring, confrontational, and socially divisive.” This statement was said to be made as Thatcher had refused to impose sanctions in South Africa, and Queen Elizabeth II feared this would lead to a split in the Commonwealth. 1992 In the spring, a biography by Andrew Morton, Diana: her True Story, is published. The book reveals the Princess of Wales’ history of depression and suicide attempts, and calls out the Prince of Wales on his infidelity. In December, John Major (Queen Elizabeth II’s ninth Prime Minister) announces the couple’s “amicable separation.” 1997 With the fall of the Conservative Party, the new Liberals led by Prime Minister Tony Blair decommission Her Majesty’s Yacht Britannia. 2003 Tony Blair (Queen Elizabeth’s tenth Prime Minister) joins forces with the United States’ President George W. Bush, and invades Iraq with the aim to “disarm Iraq of weapons of mass destruction, to end Saddam Hussein’s support of terrorism, and to free the Iraqi people.” 2009 Gordon Brown (Queen Elizabeth’s eleventh Prime Minister) is in office after winning a snap election. 2015 In the spring, the Conservative Party secures an unexpected majority in the General Election, and Prime Minister David Cameron is reelected for a second term. Part of his election promise was to set a date for a referendum on whether or not the United Kingdom should remain a member of the European Union. In 2016, the referendum was carried out leading to Britain withdrawing from the EU (commonly known as BREXIT).

“I have to be seen to be believed.” – Queen Elizabeth II

HERE’S YOUR CUE Artistic Champions: Interview with Paul & Michele Beitel How did you first get involved in the Night with the Stars gala? Night with the Stars was the very first project I (Michele) got involved with when I joined the board. I love event planning and was up for the challenge of making it successful. Why do you think people enjoy the gala so much?

Paul & Michele Beitel,

Being attached to the Academy Awards makes it a fun event with lots of energy. There is so much to do at the event – with the awards, the auction bidding, the people at your table and all around you. It’s hard not to have fun. And it’s never the same event twice; each year it evolves, which keeps it fresh and interesting.

Paul: Managing Director, ARC Financial Corp.

“We want people to see how excited we are to be a part of the theatre in this way and we hope it will get others excited about supporting the theatre.”

Michele: Th eatre Calgary Board Member and President, Star Land Consulting Ltd.

viable theatre that puts on productions that are as good as any we’ve seen around the world (New York, London, Stratford). The idea of taking the theatre to an international level is so inspiring. Theatre Calgary presents diverse and interesting shows that energize and enliven the audience, which keeps them coming back. Why is it important for to you to support the theatre over and above the price of your ticket? There is a huge gap between the price of the tickets and what it costs to develop and produce a play. We want to be a part of making sure quality theatre is affordable to everyone. We want people to be excited about going to the theatre. It should WOW you! This means spending money on the right set or the right actor to ensure the plays are all they are meant to be.

Why are you proud to be involved with Theatre Calgary as a board member, and a supporter?

Given the challenging economic times we are in, why do you think it’s important to show philanthropic leadership?

Theatre is intellectually stimulating and we are proud to be a part of a

It’s something we feel passionate about. We want people to see how excited we are

to be a part of the theatre in this way and we hope it will get others excited about supporting the theatre.

As an Artistic Champion, you receive some exclusive experiences. Do you have any favourites?

What do you think Theatre Calgary adds to the Calgary community?

We particularly enjoyed the last Artistic Champion event where the actors read a portion of the play and shared in the intimate experience of the actors’ first meeting. We also really enjoy the social aspect of meeting people who are also so passionate about the theatre.

This city is a vibrant entrepreneurial place and so is Theatre Calgary – considering its willingness to take risks with some of the plays they put on the stage. We think that fits this city’s style. Why have you chosen to be Artistic Champions? We were Dress Circle members for many years and we felt it was time to take our support to the next level. Because the theatre is a priority for us, it was just the next logical step. We are excited to be a part of bringing amazing plays to the stage.

Is there anything else you’d like to add? Going to Theatre Calgary is one of our great date nights. We’re not just networking for business, but, at the theatre, we’re networking for friends. At the Artistic Champion events we get the chance to really get to know some great people and find out some really interesting things about the theatre.

Artistic Champions Lead the Way Artistic Champions believe in the importance of the arts and take pride in helping to bring great works to our stage. Paul and Michele help champion Theatre Calgary in the community and beyond. Please consider showing personal leadership by joining this impactful membership program. By providing elevated support for Theatre Calgary, you will add strength and resilience to the company, allowing us to present inspiring productions, star talent and superior craftsmanship—you will see and appreciate the difference on stage. Become an Artistic Champion this season and enhance your enthusiasm for theatre. We will express our appreciation by inviting you to exclusive behind-thescenes events where you can enjoy spending time with theatre artists and likeminded individuals who share your passion for the stage. There are four membership levels for the Artistic Champions, each with enticing benefits: Actor’s Circle ($2,500+), Designer’s Circle ($5,000+), the Director’s Circle ($10,000+) and the Producer’s Circle ($25,000+).
