shakespeare’s great masterpiece
king lear Director Dennis Garnhum, in collaboration with Bard on the Beach Shakespeare Festival, Starring Benedict Campbell
King Lear has three daughters. In his advanced age, he plans to divide his kingdom according to which one can say she loves him best. But sweet words prove false and set off a violent storm of madness and lies. Shakespeare’s greatest play provides the ultimate family drama and a riveting portrait of human nature. This is one of my all-time favourite plays. Watch as a family is torn apart, a kingdom is destroyed, and worst of all, hearts are broken. We are combining forces with Vancouver’s original and daring Bard on the Beach in a production starring one of Canada’s greatest actors: Benedict Campbell. This is Shakespeare’s tragic masterpiece in a fresh new presentation. – Dennis

WELCOME
UP NEXT
We’re proud to welcome the world-renowned Shaw Festival to our city. This production comes directly to us from playing all summer long in beautiful Niagara-on-the-Lake. We've had a lovely time refitting the production to our stage. We have even switched around a few roles the actors are playing just to keep things lively. It was a pleasure to direct the production many months ago and an absolute delight to revisit the production now for Theatre Calgary.
It’s remarkable to me that William Shakespeare’s King Lear has never been presented on our stage.
Tabloids, paparazzi and public intrusion into private affairs: it’s all so seductive and tantalizing. In 1939, Philip Barry was writing about a new trend emerging—a rising interest in reporting for entertainment and escape versus the ever-oppressing news surrounding the Great Depression in America. The world was changing and the private problems of the wealthy class became the curiosity and distraction of the time. Clearly this trend continues. The presence of cameras and reporters causes people to behave strangely. In our play, two reporters have arrived on the eve of Tracy Lord’s wedding to capture “the Philadelphia story.” Perfect timing. Sandy warns his family: “You don’t know yet what being under the microscope does to people.” Sandy’s words prove all too prophetic as the mounting pressure to bury the family’s scandal causes some absurd choices to be made. As we rush towards the wedding march, the emotions become raw, thoughts are exploded and surprising honesty is revealed. In the end, the story that the reporters think they will uncover turns out to be a completely different one than they had expected. At the heart of this play is the story of Tracy Lord—a woman still evolving, emerging, and discovering. In fact, on the eve of her second wedding, in front of all the people she loves, she goes through one of the most challenging and exciting discoveries of her life. In Tracy’s words, “The time to make up your mind about people, is never.” We all deserve a second chance at love, and it’s that story, set in Philadelphia, that we are here to celebrate.

western premiere: heartwarming and hilarious musical
dear Johnny deere The Fred Eaglesmith Musical Book by Ken Cameron, based on the music and lyrics of Fred Eaglesmith, Additional music and arrangements by David Archibald, Director Eric Coates, with J.D. Nicholsen and Rebecca Auerbach
“An amazing new musical called Dear Johnny Deere...think soulful melodies, driving rhythms and lyrics that mix the sugar of wit with the salt of tears. If Bruce Springsteen came from rural Ontario instead of the Jersey Shore, he might have been Fred Eaglesmith.” – Toronto Star I didn’t grow up on country music, and so imagine my surprise when I saw the premiere production of this musical and was captivated from start to finish. It’s a toe-tapping treat, filled with great songs and a loveable story. When the characters can’t express themselves in words, they grab a guitar and sing. You’ll find it hard to resist smiling throughout. Another Calgary playwright debuts on our stage with this production. – Dennis foreground: rebecca auerbach and j.d. nicholsen. photo by david cooper.

in the wings
By Zachary Moull, Assistant Dramaturg
THE STORY OF THE PHILADELPHIA STORY Before it was a hit Hollywood film starring Katharine Hepburn, The Philadelphia Story was a hit Broadway play – also starring Katharine Hepburn. In fact, Philip Barry’s play and Katharine Hepburn’s career are intimately connected with each other. Hepburn was one of the most successful film actresses of the mid-1930s, but she fell out of favour towards the end of the decade. Always known as one of Hollywood’s smartest and most outspoken actresses, Hepburn eventually acquired a reputation for getting into conflicts with directors and studio bosses. Her brash confidence – along with so-called eccentricities such as preferring men’s clothing off-camera – meant that she didn’t comfortably fit the role of starlet. After a couple of flops in a row, Hepburn was promptly declared “box office poison” by a powerful guild of independent movie theatres. “They say I’m a has-been,” she told a reporter in 1938. “If I wasn’t laughing so hard, I might cry.”
When her film work dried up, Hepburn’s good friend Philip Barry approached her with a treatment for a play about a Philadelphia socialite, who bore some similarities to the actress herself. Hepburn grew up in a wealthy family, graduated from the elite Bryn Mawr College, and was even been briefly married to the son of a prominent old-money Philadelphia family. Barry had made his career writing “Barry girls” – strong, witty, glamorous heroines – and Hepburn was his perfect star. She eagerly signed on, even agreeing to forego a salary in exchange for a stake in the project, and Barry crafted the role of Tracy Lord just for her. The Philadelphia Story was the hit of the Broadway season in 1939. It won praise not only for Hepburn’s radiant performance, but also for Barry’s nuanced portrayal of social and economic class, which was rare during the Great Depression, when the wealthy were often shown in caricatures of greed or snobbery. Said George Cukor, who would direct the film adaptation: “Those people are both rich and human.” Every Hollywood studio executive wanted the film rights to The Philadelphia Story, but no one wanted Hepburn in the lead role. On screen, they thought, Tracy Lord would be a vehicle for a more marketable star like Bette Davis or Joan Crawford. But the studios were in for a surprise – Hepburn had already snapped up the film rights herself. She sold the rights to MGM for an enormous sum, kept creative control over many aspects of the project, and returned to Hollywood on her own terms.
PHILIP BARRY Philip Barry was one of the most popular Broadway playwrights of the 1920s and ‘30s. A promising writer even as a child, he went to school at Yale, studied playwriting at Harvard, and had his first play on the Broadway stage by the age of 26. Although Barry wrote in a variety of genres, he was most successful at comedy, writing what critics called a particularly American Philip Barry, 1931 (Bain News Service) version of the traditional comedy of manners. Barry’s best-known plays include Holiday (1928) and The Philadelphia Story (1939), both of which were adapted into major Hollywood films. THE MAIN LINE The Philadelphia Story actually takes place beyond the Philadelphia city limits, in an area known as the Main Line. Named after the railway line that stretches west from the city, the Main Line’s landscape is a series of picturesque towns, elite private colleges, and grand country estates.

Rockefeller Hall, a dormitory on the campus of Bryn Mawr College, Katharine Hepburn’s Main Line alma mater (Montgomery County Planning Commission)
In the midst of the Great Depression, the Main Line was a true bastion of privilege and old money. Here’s how the programme notes for The Philadelphia Story’s 1939 Broadway premiere described it: “A vague mixture, to common city folk, of debutantes, horses, teas, balls, parties, promiscuous youths, society, and money, particularly the last two.” It was worlds away from the industrial city just a few miles east, let alone the blue-collar coal mining region to the north. Playwright Philip Barry was a frequent visitor to Ardrossan, the Main Line home of his college friend Edgar Scott and his wife, the famous socialite Helen Hope Montgomery. Set in the countryside near the town of Villanova, Ardrossan was one of the grandest estates in the region. It boasted a 50-room manor house built in the Georgian style, alongside dozens of outbuildings and hundreds of acres of green pasture.

2015-16 season Subscribers are first in line for The Little Prince.
At Theatre Calgary this season, we will journey together to extraordinary places. Our canvas explodes with exotic travels to asteroids, the stars, and beyond. We will imagine the town squares of Italy in the 1950s and travel back in time to 17thcentury Salem on the eastern seaboard. Contemporary New York will share the stage with a big box grocery store and the Sahara Desert. There will be shipwrecks, sorcery, and ghosts from the past. People will fall in love, mourn the loss of their family, and have their inner child reborn. We will travel on airplanes, sailing ships, bicycles, and flying birds and, no matter where we go, we will delight in exploring the world with our hearts, minds, and imaginations. Alma is a career shoplifter with a knack for getting the “five-finger discount.” When she’s caught in the act by an overzealous security guard, there’s more revealed than the steak she has stuffed up her skirt. With a cast of oddball characters, this new comedy is a hilarious look at the differences between society ’s haves and have-nots. There is no doubt: Morris Panych is Canada’s funniest living playwright. Once again he manages to wrap keen comedy around potent ideas. This play had its world premiere last year in Washington. We are proud to be the first company in Canada to welcome this play home. Ridiculous fun. – Dennis

When three young Jewish cousins are forced to bunk together in an apartment after the death of their grandfather, the result is a wickedly funny and ferocious brawl over religious tradition and family legacy. One of the hottest plays in recent years will have audiences laughing and talking long after the play is over. The first time I read this play, I started out laughing in fits of giggles. Then I gasped in shock at some of the ideas. And in the end, I cried. This is one of the most honest perspectives you will get about being Jewish today. And in fact, this grieving family could be any family anywhere. Vital viewing. – Dennis CONTAINS STRONG LANGUAGE AND ADULT CONTENT

Witchcraft? There’s an evil lurking within the devout community of Salem, Massachusetts, and no one is beyond suspicion. A farmer, his wife, and a dangerous young woman are caught in a flash of hysteria that forces them all to face the ultimate test. Based on the Salem witch trials, Arthur Miller’s masterpiece remains one of the most powerful and thrilling plays of our time.
It’s Italy, 1953. Margaret Johnson and her daughter Clara are touring the sundrenched squares of Florence when a gust of wind carries Clara’s hat to the feet of a handsome Tuscan man. As this twist of fate blossoms into love, Margaret must decide whether to share a secret that may destroy her daughter’s happiness. A winner of six Tony Awards, this modern musical will take your breath away.
Never has this play felt more relevant. Accusations are thrown, religion is defended, and the results are hysteria and violence. I get chills just thinking about this play and how we have learned so very little from the past. Simply put, this is one of the best plays ever written. – Dennis
A gorgeous score and a boy-meets-girl story set in the piazzas of Florence and Rome? I’m in. We are presenting this in time for Mother’s Day because at the very heart of the piece is a graceful mother who does all that she can for her precious child. Bring Mom along to thank her for guiding you along the way. uplifting. – Dennis

A pilot crashes his plane in the Sahara Desert, where he meets a young prince from a distant asteroid who tells him a story of life among the stars. The Little Prince is one of the most universally cherished books of all time, selling millions of copies worldwide. Now it comes to life in a spectacular new musical celebration of the imagination and the artist within us all. This musical is a huge explosion of wondrous sounds and images. It’s unusual and totally enchanting. Watch as a pilot and a little prince discover all sorts of fascinating characters including a sultry singing rose, a dangerous snake, and a wise fox. The composers have created a nonstop singing, dancing, and dreaming musical that is perfect for both adults and children. And Theatre Calgary is presenting the world (and galaxy) premiere! – Dennis

Here’s Your Cue with JAY WESTMAN, Chairman and CEO of Jayman Built Group of Companies How did Jayman first come to be established? In 1980 Al Westman and I created Jayman. The intent was never to be just another builder. We created a pre-sell concept with customization that buyers could not find in the existing used or spec home market. By listening to buyers Jayman provided extraordinary finishing details and amazing service with a cost-effective price point. In 1982, Jayman expanded to Edmonton and by 1987 had become the #1 volume homebuilder in Calgary. Jayman is still one of the biggest and most respected builders with interests in land development and hotel construction.

There are so many reasons to invest in the community. Corporate Social Responsibility at Jayman includes the way we conduct our business, how we manage its impact on the environment, how we treat our employees and how we support community activities that aim to solve social problems in the communities in which we work and live. It is in this spirit of community giving that we bring Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives to life at Jayman. Philanthropy is part of our culture. Investing in the community supports cross-collaborative efforts between our company, our employees, community leaders, private industry and government. It instills a sense of pride in our team members and creates a sense of common purpose. It really does matter to our customers and our team members – it increases both customer loyalty and recruitment efforts. And in the end it makes good business sense all around.
Night with the Stars is a wonderful event to bring arts patrons together and it allows us to show our corporate support at a great gala. What role do you feel the performing arts play in making our community a great place to live, work and play? We believe that a thriving arts community is a vital component of a healthy community. Not only does it foster creativity, which is needed in every successful city, it gives Calgarians a place where they can reflect, be entertained, cry, laugh and be inspired.
ATTIRE: Dress to Kill
Why do you feel that it is important for companies and individuals to invest in Theatre Calgary? Arts & Culture is one of our pillars of support through our Corporate Social Responsibility program at Jayman. Theatre Calgary has certainly been an institution in Calgary for almost 50 years. It is a non-profit organization and, without the support of generous companies and individuals, it would not exist. Why has Jayman chosen to support Night with the Stars and also play a vital role again this season by sponsoring a production. It is important for us to support Theatre Calgary’s only fundraising event as well as support the organization as a production sponsor. We feel that the two-pronged approach will have the most significant impact on the organization and the quality of the season overall. What distinguishes Night with the Stars from other galas? The event itself being connected to the Oscars is very unique. The Oscars are themselves a celebration of creativity and excellence and the attendees are Calgary’s leading philanthropists and business leaders. I first came to the gala as a guest of Bruce MacKenzie of the Royal Bank. What would you say to encourage others to buy tickets? By supporting the gala you support local theatre in our great city. It is one of the special attributes that makes Calgary Calgary.
