Welcome We begin our new season with one of the most daring and exciting musicals to hit Broadway in the last few decades. You may not have heard about it until now, but I am certain you will not forget it upon seeing it today. I wanted you to experience this new musical for two very distinct reasons. First of all, it’s a bold story about living life today. It confronts the notion of modern family in an unflinching and sometimes unflattering way. You will find this both hilarious and tragic. I think we have gone past the notion that it is possible to a have a “normal” family these days, but don’t we still dream that maybe ours could be the one? Although you may not have mental illness imbedded in your family story, you are likely to relate to the basic idea of a group of people simply trying to hold it together. That may sound like incredibly depressing stuff—Is this really the way to start a theatre season? I hope you will agree with me that in their struggle, the beauty of family emerges. The other reason this is a must-see for our audiences is the extraordinary musical format it employs. The idea of a new “modern musical” has been emerging for the last while, but the strength of this new genre is fully realized in Next to Normal. Virtually sung-through, with a heavy rock beat, this musical strips down the need for realistic settings and instead invites the audience to use their imagination as the story unfolds. The beat is electric, and the sound, I think, hypnotic.

next to normal DIRECTOR'S NOTES When Next to Normal opened on Broadway in 2009 it was hailed by The New York Times as “a brave, breathtaking musical which asks you, with operatic force, to discover the liberation in knowing where it hurts.” I believe those words to be very true. After putting this musical together for four weeks in rehearsal with this incredibly talented cast and crew, we have discovered the liberation and the incredible power of this musical. In 2009/2010 I was fortunate enough to be directing a show called Bash’d in New York at an Off-Broadway Theatre, The Zipper Factory, while Next to Normal was playing at the Booth Theatre just off of Times Square. I went. This little musical was a revelation. Here, on Broadway, playing next to these multimillion dollar mega-musicals like Spiderman, The Lion King, The Little Mermaid, Mamma Mia, Legally Blonde, Billy Elliot, Young Frankenstein… was this “little” musical that could— about this woman who has bi-polar disorder and how she and her family come to grips with her and her disease.

We are fortunate here at Theatre Calgary to be granted the right to perform these productions fresh from Broadway. And I’ve discovered that’s something you’ve come to expect from us. Thank you for the encouragement.

Next to Normal is about courage. About the courage to face life on life’s terms. About stepping off into the abyss. About facing the unknown and fighting for your life in the midst of incredible odds. About family and about healing. About the price we pay to feel. And it is with this in mind that we present to you Next to Normal: the feel everything musical. It has been a privilege working on this project.

TOM KITT (Music)

Next to Normal first began in 1998 at the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop (for composers and librettists), where Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey were tasked with writing a 10-minute musical as their first-year final project. Yorkey had recently seen a television documentary on the subject of electroconvulsive therapy, and the two settled on the idea of a brief sketch about a woman undergoing this treatment—the result was the short musical Feeling Electric.

Tom Kitt is an American composer, conductor, orchestrator and musician. His composition for Next to Normal earned Tony Awards for Best Score and Best Orchestrations as well as the Pulitzer Prize, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Awards. He has also composed the music for High Fidelity (Broadway) and From Up Here (Manhattan Theatre Club), and his original songs have been featured in film and television. As a musical director, conductor and arranger, Broadway and Off-Broadway shows include 13, Hair, Laugh Whore (with Mario Cantone), Urban Cowboy and Debbie Does Dallas. Kitt was also the musical supervisor, arranger and orchestrator for Everyday Rapture at Second Stage, and music arranger for the Green Day musical American Idiot, which opened on Broadway in 2010. When not working in theatre, he is the proud leader of The Tom Kitt Band.

BRIAN YORKEY (Book and Lyrics) Brian Yorkey has received the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Awards for Best Score and Best Book of a Musical for Next to Normal. Other theatre credits include Making Tracks, which has played Off-Broadway and regionally; the musical adaptation of Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet; and the new country musical Play It By Heart. Film and television credits include the feature films Time After Time and Sluts and he is currently writing Love Undercover for Pandemonium Films and Overture, and Chase for Anonymous Content and Rosenzweig Films. He has directed Off-Broadway and regionally, and for seven years was Associate Artistic Director at Village Theatre in Washington State, one of the nation’s leading producers of new musicals. He’s a graduate of Columbia University (an alumnus of the BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop) and a proud member of the Dramatists Guild and the Writers Guild of America.

Over the next decade, the play continued to develop— eventually shifting focus from a satirical and ironic look at the medical/psychological establishment to a human drama about the effects of mental illness on a family. By 2008, the show received its first large-scale professional production at the Second Stage Theatre (Off-Broadway, New York) under the new title Next to Normal. Later that year, the show was developed further to enhance the dramatic elements of the story. The re-tooled production opened at Arena Stage to praising critical and audience reviews. Next to Normal opened on Broadway in April, 2009, receiving rave reviews from New York critics and setting box office records for its venue, the Booth Theatre. It was nominated for eleven Tony Awards and received four – including Best Original Score. Next to Normal also received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama (the previous musical to receive this award was Rent in 1996). The award was presented amid some controversy as the Pulitzer Board ignored the recommendations of the selection jury that did not include the play amongst the submitted finalists.

BIPOLAR DISORDER AND TREATMENT Also known as manic depression, bipolar disorder is a mood disorder that results in serious, even drastic changes in mood alternating between highs (mania) and lows (depression). These swings can last hours, days, weeks and even months and are different than the normal “ups and downs” that are experienced by everyone. During a period of mania, symptoms may include feelings of euphoria, rapid speech, racing thoughts, inability to concentrate, decreased need for sleep, extreme agitation and/ or impulsive and sometimes reckless behavior. Symptoms of depression may include intense feelings of sadness or hopelessness, insomnia, a decreased ability to think clearly, fatigue, lack of motivation or decreased interest in usually enjoyed activities, withdrawal from friends and family and/or recurring thoughts of suicide or self-harm. During severe episodes of mania or depression, some people may experience psychosis, or a detachment from reality. Symptoms of psychosis include hallucinations and delusional thinking.

Bipolar disorder affects approximately 1% of the population, or about 350,000 people in Canada. It affects men and women equally regardless of race, ethnicity or socio-economic background.

While there is no permanent cure, symptoms of bipolar disorder can be treated through a combination of medication and psychotherapy, allowing for greater control over mood swings and related symptoms. Medications can include mood stabilizers (lithium, Depakote), antipsychotics (Zyprexa, Risperdal) and antidepressants (Prozac, Paxil, Zoloft). For severe cases in which medication and psychotherapy is not effective or advised, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may be used to stabilize mood swings. Improvement usually occurs over a course of several treatments and in some cases a longterm course of ECT is prescribed. Short term side-effects may include confusion and memory loss. A DREAM SUMMER This past summer, Theatre Calgary and Mount Royal University were proud to launch a new partnership that rekindled a Calgary institution—Shakespeare in the Park—providing professional mentorship and a performing showcase for the next generation of theatre artists in our city. The first production in this new collaboration, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Michael Shamata, featured seventeen recent post-secondary graduates from training institutes across Alberta. Performances were enjoyed by over 10,000 people at Prince’s Island Park throughout July and August. Thank you Calgary for celebrating these emerging artists and Shakespeare in the Park.
