Welcome

Up Next

In our preparation for this production, we have encountered colourful and countless versions of Jane Austen’s beautiful story. It has been adapted for the stage numerous times; there are multiple film versions and even a few board games based on Pride and Prejudice. The appeal is obvious, immediate and everlasting: we all need to love and be loved. Though written about a specific time and place in history, it continues to feel current and powerful. As we’ve been rehearsing the play I’ve asked our actors to bring their life experience—their personal feelings of love, their fears of rejection and their passions for life—into the rehearsal room. It has resulted in sighs of recognition, gasps of surprise, and boundless wide grins. As I look about the room, I see people’s spirits lift because they are taking part in the telling of this gorgeous tale. This is one case where you’ll be touched not only by these artists’ talent, but also by their humanity and passion for life.

Last year we premiered our new production of our annual tradition of A Christmas Carol. Families celebrated and cheered with us in record numbers. I hope you will share your Christmas with us yet again.

This is a world premiere adaptation. Thanks to the support of Fuse: The Enbridge New Play Development Program, we were able to develop this work with playwright Janet Munsil over the past year. In collaboration with the National Arts Centre, we are privileged to add our voices in the celebration of all that we love about this very romantic—and dare I say necessary—story. We are grateful to be allowed to share our hearts with yours.

A HUGE HONOUR

We recently learned that our premiere production of Lost – A Memoir has been nominated for a Governor General’s Literary Award. You’ll remember we premiered this play on our stage two seasons ago. It tells the true story of a Calgary woman’s search for her brother who is lost at sea. Developed as part of our Fuse program, our production has travelled to the Neptune Theatre in Halifax and Prairie Theatre Exchange in Winnipeg. As well, the American premiere was presented at Indiana Repertory Theatre in 2011. It is an incredible honour for Cathy Ostlere and myself to receive this nomination, and we’d love to acknowledge Theatre Calgary’s incredible support and belief in mounting this new work. I am truly touched that a story about an Albertan, created by Albertans has been noticed and recognized in this way.

THERE’S SOMETHING ABOUT JANE By Robert Morrison Why Jane Austen? Why is there a seemingly endless series of conferences, articles, books, movies, editions and “costumed weekends” devoted to her? There are only six novels: Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), Emma (1815), Northanger Abbey (1818) and Persuasion (1818). Why does our culture turn to them more frequently than to the work of any other English author, with the possible exception of Shakespeare? What does Austen’s work contain that we need, or like, or miss so much? There is, of course, no one answer. Indeed, a large part of her enduring appeal is that she does so many things well. She is a great comic novelist with an almost unrivalled sense of irony, and all six of her novels are “comedies of manners” in which courtship is the foremost interest and marriage the highest ambition. Yet at the same time, Austen’s writings are full of dark shadows and deep anxieties. Several factors constantly threaten to deform polite and profoundly hierarchical society. the lives of her female characters: the Today—needless to say—we live very shortage of money, the shortage of men, differently. But they are often no match for the wit, insight, honesty, or courage Further, Austen is celebrated for the “realism” with which she of the women they love. Austen portrays—or imagines?—a captures the day-to-day lives of the English gentry in the second fundamental equality between the sexes, and a passionate decade of the 19th-century, as they eat, drink, dance, visit, commitment between lovers that not only sees far beyond walk, read, hunt, shop, and debate amidst an often dizzying wealth, rank, gender, class, and social protocol, but that we array of gender restrictions, parental expectations, and social may well worry does not exist in “real life.” Austen resonates conventions, all of which Austen reveals with an often disarming so powerfully today because her range as a writer extends clarity. Her novels, however, are also fairy tales in which her lead effortlessly from humour to fear, because she skillfully characters live in beautiful homes, sit on beautiful furniture, and blends realism with wish-fulfillment, because her novels so wear beautiful clothes, and in which the immense social and penetratingly reveal the past and the present, and perhaps psychological strains on many of her women are wished away in most of all because she shows us various versions of happiness a happy ending that sees love conquer all, as Austen’s (invariably and respect that we deeply admire, even as we recognize how pretty and intelligent) heroine marries Austen’s (invariably far our own society still is from achieving these goals. handsome and wealthy) hero. Austen also appeals to us because her world is at once far removed from our own and distinctly reminiscent of it. Most decisively, her characters speak in a way that repeatedly separates them from us, and that dramatically illuminates their 16

COURTSHIP IN THE REGENCY ERA In Jane Austen’s time (1775-1817), etiquette was everything. If you were a member of respected society, there were rules for almost every form of address and social communication—most especially involving courtship and marriage. Here are some guidelines for single young men and women: n

n

For young ladies, presentation at court, or “coming out,” signals eligibility for marriage. It is traditional to delay presentation of younger daughters until their elder sisters have been married or engaged. Unmarried men and women should never converse privately, or be alone in a room together.

n

Always bow or curtsey upon meeting and taking your leave.

n

Never call each other by your Christian names.

n

Do not exchange gifts or private letters.

n

n

Dancing more than twice together in one evening will be regarded as overtly familiar and rude to other guests. Avoid physical interaction. Touching in any intimate or familiar manner is unacceptable. Exceptions include touching required for dancing and escorting a lady on a gentleman’s arm. Ladies, if you must refuse a gentleman’s proposal, do so with the utmost courtesy, and at the risk of reprisal for declining an advantageous match. Any conspicuous signs of romantic attachment will be regarded as inappropriately flirtatious unless a formal engagement has been negotiated. Even in such circumstances, the rules of etiquette listed above generally apply.

Illustration by C. E. Brock from the 1895 edition of Pride and Prejudice.

A lady who elopes will be considered a “fallen woman” and bring scandal to her family as a sign of bad blood.
