MINDS HARE

Visually evident as it is, the world seems to have a newly growing fad about the moviegoing experience. While the industry always awaits a sizzling good upgrade for the cinemas around, you wouldn't be disappointed on what the industry's Pandora Box has in store for you. With the still ongoing demand for projection upgrades, Barco and Omniplex Cinema Group are strengthening their collaboration to equip Omniplex theatres across Ireland and the UK with state-of-the-art laser projection technology. The cinema chain that has been a prominent cinema chain in Europe since 1991, will now implement Barco's advanced laser systems across both existing locations and new builds.

Meanwhile, we have B&B Theatres in line and set to debut 'The World's Largest ScreenX Auditorium', marking B&B's first venture into New Jersey; promising an unparalleled cinematic experience. The facility will feature eight screens equipped with the latest laser projection technology, wall-to-wall curved screens, and heated leather recliners. In addition to the cinema, the venue is said to include bowling lanes and a full-blown arcade! On the other hand, we have China's Xinjiekou Cienma, unveiling a groundbreaking cinema screen that is setting new industry benchmarks. Hailing to become 'The World's first acoustically transparent LED screen', this pioneering screen has achieved DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) certification, marking a significant advancement from traditional IMAX screens. Now, ever heard of 'The Prettiest IMAX'? Well, Turn to Sri Lanka's all-new Scope Cinemas. With the country being picturesque in itself, this property is a breath of fresh air for all those movie buffs out there. Get to read more about it on our Special Story. Speaking of movies and box office, 'Kalki 2898 AD' has surpassed a whopping INR 1000 crore mark at the box office! Now that surely is setting some unfathomable benchmark… And with the festival season right around the corner, we do have some big lineups. Starting with the back-to-back pan India movies - Vijay's 'GOAT' (Tamil), Jr NTR's 'Devara' (Telugu), Rajnikanth's 'Vettaiyan' (Tamil), Dhruva Sarja's 'Martin' (Kannada), Tovino's 'A.R.M (Malayalam), 'Joker 2', 'Transformers One'; all set to claim the screens nearby you. But will this lead to a tug-of-war between the screens….we would have to wait and see. 'Pushpa 2' seems to have put in some disappointment considering the dates for release pushed from August to December. Seeing the silver lining, we would still have it alongside exciting movies like 'Mufasa'. While we see movies such as 'Stree 2' (Hindi), 'Munjya'(Hindi), 'Vaazhai' (Tamil) doing some very good numbers at the BO, we can surely say that 'CONTENT IS ALWAYS KING'.

GOLDEN TICKET CINEMAS SET TO REOPEN AT MERCER MALL

Renovation is advancing swiftly at the former AMC Theatre in Mercer Mall, soon to be rebranded as Golden Ticket Cinemas. Scheduled to open this fall, the revamped venue promises a host of new features designed to enhance the cinematic experience.

Golden Ticket Cinemas recently unveiled a video on its social page, showcasing the exciting upgrades. The theatre will feature a modern concession stand offering a variety of hot foods, including pizza, fries, wings, and a selection of beverages.

The interior renovation includes new flooring, drapery, a state-of-theart surround sound system, and cutting-edge projection equipment. Each of the eight auditoriums will be equipped with new recliners, aimed at providing exceptional comfort and viewing pleasure.

The venue, which closed in 2022, has a rich history with the community, having shown notable films such as 'October Sky' and 'A Beautiful Mind,' the latter connected to local figure John Nash, after whom a nearby boulevard is named.

The theatre also gained national recognition in 2002 when a photograph of fans in costume waiting for 'Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones' appeared on the front page of USA Today.

Alongside the new cinema, the mall will also welcome Five Below this fall, a retail chain renowned for

offering products priced between $1 and $5. With over 1,300 stores across 42 states, Five Below will further enhance the mall's array of attractions.

STURBRIDGE THEATRE REIMAGINED: LUXE UPGRADES AWAIT!

After nearly four years of closure, the former Cinemagic theatre in Sturbridge is preparing to reopen this fall as Entertainment Cinemas Sturbridge, spearheaded by entertainment mogul Bill Hanney. The 110 Charlton Road venue is undergoing a significant transformation to enhance the moviegoing experience.

"Theatres have transformed in the last 15 years," Hanney said. "We're introducing big, reclining chairs that make the movie experience truly comfortable." The revamped cinema will feature plush reclining seats, a full-service kitchen, and chair-side delivery. Hanney added, "Guests will still enjoy classic snacks, but with added options like fresh-baked pizza and homemade nachos."

The upgraded space will also include a new bar and refreshed colour schemes, aligning with Hanney's other luxury cinemas across New England. "The kitchen will take the longest to complete, but we anticipate opening the theatres by mid-fall," Hanney noted. While the kitchen may not be ready immediately, the other enhancements are set to provide maximum comfort and convenience.

The transformation involves removing arcade games and replacing them with a full-service

kitchen. "We want to bring an amazing movie entertainment experience and make this the most comfortable theatre in the area," Hanney said.

Entertainment Cinemas Sturbridge plans to hire around 100 employees before its reopening. With these upgrades, the theatre aims to deliver a new level of luxury and convenience to moviegoers in Sturbridge.

CHINA'S TECH MARVEL: ACOUSTICALLY TRANSPARENT LED SCREEN

Xinjiekou International Cinema at Nanjing Deji Plaza, China, has unveiled a groundbreaking cinema screen that is setting new industry benchmarks. Developed by LED innovator Unilumin, this pioneering screen is hailed as the world's first acoustically transparent LED screen and has achieved DCI (Digital Cinema Initiatives) certification, marking a significant advancement from traditional IMAX screens.

Measuring an impressive 20.48 metres (67 feet) in width and 10.8 metres (35 feet) in height, the screen employs the UCine LED film projection system to deliver 4K96 resolution with peak brightness levels of 300 units. This results in exceptionally clear, smooth, and stable picture quality, significantly

enhancing the viewing experience. The screen has also earned TÜV low blue light certification, reducing harmful blue light emissions to protect viewers' eyes.

What distinguishes this screen is its innovative design. The unique module perforation allows the primary sound channel speakers to be positioned behind the screen, utilising the LED box's structure to create an optimal acoustic environment. This design provides an immersive, acoustically transparent audio experience and eliminates the need for a dedicated projection room, thus saving valuable space.

The screen made its debut with a preview of the animated family adventure 'The Royal Cat', directed by Liang Cao. Unilumin Group, known for its LED screens ranging from 5 to 20 metres (16.4 feet to 65.62 feet), has also contributed to notable projects at the Regency Theatre in Los Angeles, the San Ya Cinema in Hainan, and the control system for the Sphere Entertainment Venue in Las Vegas.

B&B Theatres is set to debut a state-of-the-art cinema at American Dream, an elite entertainment complex in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The cinema will boast an 80-foot-wide central screen complemented by 82-foot side walls, offering a stunning

270-degree panoramic view. ScreenX, developed by CJ 4DPLEX, extends the movie screen onto the auditorium's walls, delivering a truly immersive experience.

ALAMO DRAFTHOUSE'S CINEMATIC REVAMP

Moving Image Technologies (MITQ) has recently led a significant upgrade at Alamo Drafthouse's newly acquired Richardson, Texas location, highlighting the chain's dedication to enhancing its cinematic offerings. The project featured a series of high-tech installations aimed at elevating the moviegoing experience.

The centrepiece of the upgrade is the installation of seven advanced Barco SP4K RGB projectors, known for their exceptional image clarity and colour accuracy. IOAN ALLEN HONOURED AT CANNES FOR DOLBY'S 50-YEAR LEGACY

At the 77th Festival de Cannes, Ioan Allen, Senior Vice President at Dolby Laboratories, was awarded the prestigious Festival de Cannes Medal by Thierry Frémaux, General Delegate of the Festival. This honour celebrates 50 years of Dolby's significant contributions to the film industry, notably through Allen's pioneering work in developing the Dolby Stereo film program.

The award ceremony, held at the Palais des Festivals, recognised Allen's dedication to Dolby's technical innovations and its

enduring impact on cinema. Since joining Dolby in 1969 and working alongside founder Ray Dolby, Allen has played a crucial role in revolutionising film sound. His achievements include receiving five scientific and technical awards from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, including an Oscar.

In anticipation of the future, Dolby announced plans to enhance the Louis Lumière room at the Palais des Festivals with Dolby Atmos immersive sound for the 78th Festival de Cannes in 2025. This upgrade highlights Dolby's ongoing commitment to advancing the cinematic experience.

Thierry Frémaux expressed appreciation for Dolby's half-century partnership, describing it as a guarantee of know-how and excellence. Reflecting on the honour, Allen remarked, "Receiving this distinction is a great honour and renews our commitment to the Festival de Cannes and the world of cinema."

As Dolby celebrates its 50 years in the film industry, it has renewed its technical partnership with the Festival de Cannes for the next three years, reaffirming its leadership in cinematic innovation.

GOPRO MEETS IMAX: EXTREME SCREEN MAGIC

IMAX's latest cinematic adventure, FLY, is set to redefine the

boundaries of extreme sports filmmaking by pairing GoPro's compact cameras with the grandeur of IMAX screens. This daring documentary, which chronicles the thrilling escapades of a basejumping couple, exemplifies a groundbreaking blend of technology and storytelling. The film, shot primarily on GoPro cameras, will be showcased in IMAX theatres, underscoring a significant shift in how high-octane visuals are presented to audiences.

FLY follows in the footsteps of Skywalkers, another extreme sports documentary that used GoPro technology to capture heartstopping action. By featuring GoPro as the primary camera, FLY embraces a more accessible and versatile approach to capturing extreme sports, proving that even the most compact of cameras can deliver awe-inspiring footage. The film's trailer reveals intense basejumping scenes, all captured with the trademark GoPro perspective that brings viewers right into the heart of the action.

While IMAX theatres have traditionally showcased films shot on 65mm film cameras, there is a growing trend of using high-end digital and prosumer cameras, including GoPro, to achieve IMAX standards. The advent of IMAX's AI technology plays a pivotal role in this evolution. IMAX's advanced AI algorithms are designed to enhance and upscale footage, ensuring that images shot with less resolution can

still deliver stunning clarity on the enormous IMAX screen. This technology compensates for the limitations of GoPro cameras, ensuring that the final presentation meets the high standards expected by IMAX audiences.

The collaboration between GoPro and IMAX highlights a transformative moment in cinematic technology. As digital cameras become more prevalent, the ability to adapt their footage for largeformat screens like IMAX is opening new possibilities for filmmakers. This development also raises intriguing questions about the future of IMAX's traditional 65mm film cameras. With AI technology proving capable of elevating footage from prosumer cameras, one might wonder if the next-generation 65mm film cameras will continue to be a priority for IMAX.

As FLY prepares to make its debut, it exemplifies how technological advancements are reshaping the cinematic landscape. By leveraging GoPro's innovative capturing techniques and IMAX's cutting-edge AI enhancements, this film is set to provide audiences with a breathtaking visual experience that bridges the gap between compact camera technology and the immersive world of IMAX cinema.

CHRISTIE AT SHANGHAI FILM FESTIVAL: 15 YEARS STRONG

Christie continues its pivotal role at the Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF) for the 15th consecutive year, showcasing its cinema projection technology across major venues. This year's festival, themed City of Films, celebrates Shanghai's rich film heritage and the heights of cinematic achievement.

Christie's cutting-edge projection systems are featured prominently at both the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as during screenings for the prestigious Golden Goblet Award for Best Film. The festival presents over 3,700 films from 105 countries, displayed across 53 venues, including 47 theatres across 16 districts in Shanghai and 6 theatres in nearby areas. Many cinemas utilise Christie's CINITY Cinema System and Dolby Cinema for superior visual experiences.

The Christie CP4420-Xe projector, employed for the opening film 'Red Radio Over Shanghai,' underscores Christie's commitment to premier projection standards. James Li, Executive Director of China Cinema at Christie, reflects on their ongoing partnership with SIFF, stating, "Our technology helps present filmmakers' visions with spectacular visuals, enhancing the moviegoing experience."

Christie's projection technology, integral to the upgraded Shanghai Film Art Center, is also showcased at prominent global festivals such as Cannes, BFI London, and Toronto, reinforcing its role in elevating the cinematic experience worldwide.

APPLE'S BIG MOVE: STREAM OVER SCREENS

Apple could be rethinking its strategy on theatrical releases for original movies, shifting focus entirely to its streaming platform, Apple TV+. While films like 'Killers of the Flower Moon' and 'Napoleon' were previously part of a strategy to drive subscribers to Apple TV+, it appears the company might be pivoting away from wide cinema releases. This change comes as Apple faces mounting financial pressures, with streaming expenditure surpassing $20 billion and no 'Apple Original' film achieving significant box office success.

The upcoming thriller comedy 'Wolfs', starring Brad Pitt and George Clooney, was initially slated for a wide theatrical release on September 20. However, recent reports suggest that Apple is now planning a limited cinema release before making the film available on Apple TV+. This decision could limit the film's reach and impact its potential success. Apple is reportedly prioritising its public relations over box office performance, opting to minimise the risk of negative reactions from underperforming theatrical releases.

played a pivotal role in introducing Hollywood films to local audiences and establishing cinema distribution circuits. This legacy of innovation is evident in every aspect of Scope Cinemas, from its state-ofthe-art technology to its luxurious amenities.

A Technological Marvel

The new Scope Cinemas multiplex is a testament to technological innovation, anchored by Sri Lanka's first IMAX with Laser screen, which revolutionises the movie-watching experience. At its core is the 4K Laser projection, delivering stunningly sharp and detailed images that draw audiences into the film with remarkable precision. Paired with this visual excellence is a sophisticated multi-channel audio system, designed to create a rich, three-dimensional soundscape that enhances both the clarity of dialogue and the impact of sound effects. Together, these elements work harmoniously to immerse viewers in an experience that is both visually and audibly breathtaking. Adding to this is the laser projection's superior contrast and colour range, which brings scenes to life with vibrant, true-tolife colours and deep contrasts, ensuring that every detail is presented with the utmost accuracy and dynamism.

A Culinary Experience

Scope Cinemas elevates the traditional moviegoing experience by seamlessly blending gourmet dining with cinematic entertainment, creating a unique and luxurious offering at their new multiplex in Havelock City Mall. Here, patrons are treated to an array of culinary delights that go beyond the typical cinema fare, ensuring that every visit is a feast for both the eyes and the palate. The gourmet food options include a diverse selection of freshly prepared dishes, from specialty burgers and wraps to artisanal snacks, all designed to enhance the overall enjoyment of the film. The menu is thoughtfully

curated to cater to a wide range of tastes, offering everything from classic comfort foods to innovative and creative dishes that satisfy even the most discerning palates.

For those seeking an even more exclusive experience, Scope Cinemas introduces the ‘Director's Lounge’, a VIP area designed to offer a refined and intimate setting for dining and film viewing. In this luxurious space, guests can enjoy their meals in a relaxed, plush environment, surrounded by elegant décor that adds to the sophistication of the occasion. The Director's Lounge redefines the concept of cinema dining, providing a premium experience that seamlessly integrates gourmet food, fine beverages, and high-quality entertainment, making every visit to Scope Cinemas a memorable one.

Discussing this innovative blend of dining and entertainment, Cader noted, "We believe that watching a movie should be an immersive experience. Our gourmet dining options allow our guests to enjoy their favourite films with the added pleasure of high-quality food and drinks. It's about creating a full, unforgettable experience." This vision of merging culinary and cinematic excellence has become a cornerstone of Scope Cinemas' brand identity.

Architectural Elegance

The design of the Havelock City Mall multiplex is a striking example of modern architecture, blending

luxury with functionality to create a cinema experience that is both visually impressive and highly practical. Upon entering, patrons are greeted by spacious lobbies that set the tone for their visit. These expansive areas are more than just a passageway; they are thoughtfully designed spaces where guests can relax, socialise, and immerse themselves in the cinematic atmosphere. The lobbies feature contemporary design elements and ample seating, offering a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing environment that invites guests to linger before and after their movie.

A standout feature of the multiplex is its use of massive LED screens in the lobby areas, a pioneering addition in Sri Lanka. These screens are not merely decorative but serve a dynamic role, showcasing movie trailers and promotional content in high definition. Strategically placed to catch the eye, the LED screens add a layer of engagement to the space, drawing patrons into the world of cinema even before they step into the auditorium.

Inside the theatres, the focus on comfort and style continues with a variety of seating options that cater to different preferences. The cinema offers plush recliners and elegantly designed VIP seating, ensuring that every guest can enjoy their film in

"I was involved in the film industry, and it was a real joy when my son, now the chairman of Scope, came up with the idea of opening a multiplex at Havelock City. Bringing the first IMAX to the country was a thrilling experience. We're delighted that the cinemas are thriving!"

maximum comfort. The seating is not only luxurious but also thoughtfully arranged to provide optimal sightlines, making sure that the viewing experience is as enjoyable as the surroundings. The attention to detail in both design

and functionality at the Havelock City Mall multiplex exemplifies Scope Cinemas' commitment to creating a premium cinematic environment that stands out in every aspect.

Reflecting on the design of the new multiplex, Cader said, "Every element of our new multiplex has been carefully considered, from the architecture to the technology, to ensure that our patrons have an experience that is second to none. We are proud to offer a venue that not only showcases the best films but does so in a setting that is both luxurious and comfortable."

Commitment to Excellence

Scope Cinemas' dedication to providing a superior cinema

experience is reflected in its numerous accolades and recognitions. The chain has recently been honoured with the Gold Award for Innovative Brand of the Year and has been recognised as a sector winner for entertainment in Sri Lanka's Most Respected Entities. These awards highlight Scope Cinemas' commitment to excellence and innovation in the cinema industry.

We want to offer not just a place to watch movies but an allencompassing entertainment experience that excites and delights our patrons." This passion is evident in every aspect of the cinema's operations, from its stateof-the-art technology to its exceptional customer service.

A Community-Centric Approach

Central to this approach is the integration of a user-friendly mobile app that allows patrons to effortlessly book tickets, select seats, and even order food, all from their phones. This app not only enhances convenience but also streamlines the entire moviegoing process, providing real-time updates and notifications to keep guests informed and prepared for their visit. Beyond technological innovation, Scope Cinemas is deeply invested in its local community, actively working to build strong relationships with its patrons. The cinema chain goes

"Our objective is to grow and as a Sri Lankan company, we aspire to achieve success akin to the big players in the industry. Our values have already garnered us significant recognition, both regionally and internationally. To earn respect on a global scale, we must focus on understanding the cultures and business practices of the markets we aim to enter - and consistency in performance and reliability are key. We need to study and adhere to international compliance standards, as entering larger markets demands a higher level of compliance and best practices. Additionally, building and strengthening our brand is crucial - we must invest more time, money and effort into enhancing our brand reputation and developing innovative marketing strategies. GRANTHAM UP FOR AN ALL-NEW EXPERIENCE

Savoy Grantham's latest enhancement of Screen 1 is a masterclass in cinematic luxury and innovation. The replacement of traditional seating with new, ergonomically advanced options marks a shift toward enhancing the audience's physical and sensory engagement with cinema. Featuring a complete overhaul in collaboration with Ferco Seating, the cinema now features state-of-the-art, fully reclining, Premium Verona seats.

As the cinema industry continues to evolve, the challenge of offering a superior moviegoing experience

becomes more pressing. It's a competitive landscape where the fusion of innovation and comfort can set a theatre apart. Savoy Cinema, a leader in this space, is celebrating five years of its Grantham multiplex with a striking transformation that underscores its commitment to excellence. The focus of this celebration? A complete overhaul of Screen 1, in collaboration with Ferco Seating, the renowned leader in luxury cinema seating.

Savoy Cinema has consistently pushed the envelope in delivering exceptional cinematic experiences. This milestone at Grantham is no

exception. Marking five years of successful operation, Savoy decided to up the ante by revamping Screen 1 with the best in comfort and design. Their partner in this venture, Ferco Seating, is no stranger to Savoy, having previously worked together on projects at their Boston, Corby, and Nottingham locations. The partnership was a natural fit, with both companies sharing a vision of redefining the moviegoing experience.

The transformation of Screen 1 involved the replacement of 165 traditional Paragon tip-up seats with 127 of Ferco's Premium Verona seats. These are not just any

seats; they represent the pinnacle of cinema seating technology.

The Verona models installed come in various configurations-Verona Twin Recliner Compact, Verona Linked Recliner, and Verona Rockereach designed to cater to different audience preferences. Savoy's choice to restrict the footrests on certain models was a strategic one, aimed at maximising space without sacrificing the comfort that Ferco's seats are known for. In the front row, seats without restricted footrests were installed to ensure optimal comfort and space utilisation.

The Premium Verona seats are a marvel of modern engineering. Featuring fully reclining functionality, these seats offer dual motor control, allowing patrons to adjust the footrest and backrest independently for a personalised experience. The leatherette finish, chosen to align with Savoy Cinemas' brand identity, adds a touch of elegance, making the cinema experience as luxurious as it is immersive.

Since the installation, the response from cinema-goers has been overwhelmingly positive.

James Collington, Savoy's Managing Director, shared his enthusiasm,

"We are extremely pleased with the completion of Screen 1 at our Savoy Grantham venue. The entire journey, from the initial discussions to the final installation, was smooth and expertly handled. Having partnered with Ferco on previous projects to introduce Premium Verona seating, we were excited to bring this quality to Grantham, knowing the seats provide an exceptional viewing experience that our guests appreciate. The feedback so far has been overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting the increased comfort that the new seating delivers. We look forward to working with the team again on future projects."
