MINDS HARE

In the ever-evolving realm of cinematic excellence, the global cinema industry is currently witnessing a dynamic surge in technological advancements that redefine the very essence of cinema.

The introduction of LED screens is gaining momentum, with numerous cinemas incorporating them in the last quarter. Samsung has made a notable entry into the German market with its ONYX Cinema LED screens, garnering attention from cinema owners and cinephiles. Additionally, premium large-format screens are receiving significant interest and are being installed in many new cinema halls.

Collectively, we have seen developments that contribute to a transformative landscape within the cinema industry, fostering an environment where technology marvels continually enhance the overall moviegoing experience for audiences worldwide. As the industry wholeheartedly embraces these advancements, the future promises an exciting tapestry of possibilities, offering a cinematic experience that not only transcends traditional boundaries but captivates audiences on a global scale.

The film entertainment industry in India is currently experiencing a prosperous phase, with theatrical collections reaching unprecedented heights in recent months. The increasing prosperity of audiences suggest a continued growth trajectory, with expectations of significant changes and reinvention across various channels, content genres, and operational frameworks in this domain.

Renowned experts highlight that the Indian box office has remarkably fast recovery rates globally, achieving record-breaking gross collections in the past year. Singlescreen cinemas played a pivotal role, contributing to 48% of the revenue in 2023. The total number of screens increased by 4% during the same period. The outlook for 2024 brings a ray of optimism, with anticipated investments in cinema infrastructure, particularly in the form of affordable “Janta Cinemas” positioned between multiplexes and single screens. This aims to create a comfortable space for middle and upper-middle-class audiences to enjoy evenings out with their families.

While ‘Hanu-Man’ released earlier this year, may not have been a blockbuster, it performed well at the box office. The film resonated well with audiences, demonstrating its ability to attract viewers and generate revenue. Looking ahead towards the next quarter, the cinematic landscape appears to present some challenges, with the current lineup of movies not necessarily showing strong promise. However, the unpredictability of the film industry means that projections may not always accurately reflect the true potential of upcoming releases.

It’s important to acknowledge that in the world of cinema, surprises are a common occurrence, and the success of a film is not solely determined by initial expectations. The element of surprise adds to the intrigue and excitement within the industry, keeping both filmmakers and the audience on their toes. As we navigate through the upcoming months, the potential for unexpected cinematic gems remain, and we eagerly await what the future holds for the silver screen!

Additionally, there are exciting industry events on the horizon. TheatreWorld is returning to attend CinemaCon in Las Vegas, USA, from April 8-11, 2024.

Following that, CineEurope in Barcelona, Spain is set for June 17-20, offering exclusive studio screenings, product presentations, and educational seminars to stay ahead of industry trends. You can grab your copy of the latest TheatreWorld issue at both events. We eagerly anticipate to meet you there!!

HOLLYWOOD PALMS CINEMA UNVEILS THEATRE TOOLKIT ON NEW WEBSITE

The entertainment destination Hollywood Palms in Naperville, Illinois has announced the launch of its newly revamped website, developed in collaboration with Theatre Toolkit. The revamped website showcases a user-friendly interface that streamlines the ticketing process. In addition to the website, a mobile app will soon be available. Hollywood Palms includes a three story tall glass conservatory filled with palm trees and lush tropical plants. The location's highly stylised auditoriums are themed after locales such as an Egyptian Palace, Mayan Jungle, and a Chinese Temple.

"We are excited to release this enhanced website. It reflects our dedication to creating an immersive and enjoyable moviegoing experience for our patrons," said Erik Fruin, Director of Technology at Hollywood Palms. "The collaboration with Theatre Toolkit has allowed us to bring innovation to the forefront, ensuring that our guests have a seamless and enjoyable experience from the moment they decide to see a film with us."

DERBY'S QUAD CHOSEN AS FIRST UK CINEMA FOR 'CUTTING-EDGE' TECH TRIAL

A Derbyshire cinema has started trialling a groundbreaking initiative - and organisers are asking people to get in touch who want to take

part in the trial. Derby's Quad in Derby city centre is trialling the game-changing technology starting from February 2024.

WatchWord is the latest piece of cinema technology to be trialled in the UK and Derby residents will be the first to have the chance to see it in motion. WatchWord comes in the form of closed-captioned glasses and aims to enhance the accessibility of cinemas in the UK.

The glasses aim to greatly improve the cinema experience for deaf, deafened and hard of hearing film lovers and use smart glasses technology paired with Wi-Fi to bring the magic of the big screen to everyone. People will be able to have their own personalised captions that will be projected on the lens of the eyewear, keeping the big screen free from captions for those who do not need them.

During the trial, people will be able to choose from a range of screenings each day with the choice to sit where they like. Captions are broadcasted to the smart glasses which can be customised to suit the needs of the person wearing them. People will be able to select the colour, size and position of their captions to make the experience as easy as possible.

AUSTIN'S ONLY SINGLESCREEN THEATRE RESTORED, REVIVES SPIRIT

The single-screen theatre had to close more than a decade ago when owners couldn't afford to upgrade its 35 mm projection system. On the east side of Austin sits the Millennium Youth Entertainment Complex, a staple of the community for more than two decades.

"There was a place that families and children and teenagers in the neighbourhood can come and have a safe place," said Josh Frank, the founder of the Blue Starlite Drive-In and Eastside Cinema.

One of the draws of the complex was a single-screen movie theatre equipped with a 35 mm projection system. But when movie theatres switched to digital, the theatre's owners couldn't afford the high price of fitting the cinema with the new technology, forcing them to close the doors in 2011.

In 2023, Frank decided that he wouldn't let the theatre die.

"I was just as curious as someone who likes, sort of, creating movie experiences," Frank said. "I saw the sign that said 'Movie,' and thought, 'What's behind that door?'

That curiosity led Frank to his decision to upgrade the 1999 vintage single-screen theatre and give it a new life, renaming it ‘The Eastside Cinema’.

March - May 2024 TW-8

"I wanted it to feel like you were going to a movie theatre back in my heyday of, you know, being young," Frank said. "There's something special here, and this is what I want. I want to share with people."

Over the past several weeks, Frank brought his Blue Starlite crew to test the new technology and get the theatre up and running again. The theatre had a few test screenings in December 2023, but it was officially reopened shortly after.

"I'm proud to be able to do my part and carry on the legacy of the Millennium and the history of Austin and Austin cinema," Frank said. The theatre will hold screenings Wednesday through Saturday, but Frank wants to keep the focus close to home. "I want 70% to be like, local curation, local groups doing cinema events that are open to the public," Frank said.

Since its soft-open in December 2023, Frank said nine film organisations have already signed up to host events at the theatre. Frank is hopeful that his small local theatre will keep the spirit of ‘Old Austin’ alive. "I feel like it's a real testament to the city that even though it's changed, you can still discover little hidden gems and bring them back and keep 'Old Austin' alive," Frank said.

Timewaying Technology recently unveiled another world's largest 20metre 4K DCI LED cinema at ZheJiang Times Cinema at Hangzhou city of China.

As the investor of the location, DeShun Xun, Chairman of Zhejiang Times Cinema expressed his satisfaction with their various business ventures. Their flagship cinema, Zhejiang Times Cinema, West Lake Cultural Square Store, regained its title as the highest grossing cinema in the province after eight years. Xun believes that the addition of the HeyLED PLF auditorium at Zhejiang Times Cinema XiaoShan Kaiyuan Store will further boost box office revenue by leveraging its prime location and operational advantages.

REALD'S VICTORY IN 3D PROJECTION CINEMA SYSTEMS' INVENTION PATENTS IN CHINA

Global visual technology leader RealD announced today that the China National Intellectual Property Office (CNIPA) has ruled in favour of RealD, rejecting all three Shenzhen LeVision Global Technology's requests to invalidate RealD's Chinese patents. LeVision's three invalidity challenges to the RealD 3D dual-beam and the three-beam optical system patents were all rejected, confirming in full the validity and integrity of the invention patents of RealD 3D projection system in China.

RealD's three Chinese invention patents are ZL201310233906.3, ZL201480000777.6, and ZL201710333855.X.

These patent challenges are the second time an individual or company has filed an invalidation request against patents owned by RealD 3D regarding their three-beam optical technology in China. All requests to date were denied.

This victory is also the latest case upholding and affirming RealD's patented technology in the world. In 2018, the European Patent Office (EPO) rejected both Volfoni and MasterImage's European patent invalidation challenges against RealD, and the validity, scope, and rights of RealD 3D system remained unchanged. Prior to this, RealD 3D was also challenged by patent invalidation challenges in jurisdictions such as the United States, Japan, Australia, and Russia, and these were rejected by local judicial and patent authorities. RealD's invention patent rights on this technology have been

maintained and reconfirmed time and time again.

In addition to maintaining the validity of the entire patent rights, RealD has also won verdicts of patent infringement against MasterImage, Volfoni, and DepthQ in both US and German courts over the past ten years.

"The success of these cases underscores the third-party recognition of the quality and value of our patents. They also reaffirmed the intellectual property behind RealD's technology," said Travis Reid, CEO and President of Worldwide Cinema of RealD.

"RealD employs world-class inventors and invests substantial resources in our mission to deliver the perfect visual image. In order to continue this commitment and invest in R&D, we must hold infringers accountable for copying RealD's patented technology and protect our R&D and existing patented technologies," Reid said.

RealD's China subsidiary company was founded in 2010. "In the past ten years, we have established offices in Beijing, Shanghai, and Hong Kong, and in 2017, we established a Support Centre in Shanghai to engage in product development and maintenance and gradually move the production base of 3D equipment to China. Along the way, we have built strong relationships with many cinema chains and cinemas, and together, we have brought better cinema experiences to moviegoers across China. The key to our business and partnership is the continuous research and development and the protection of our intellectual property rights," said Edman Chan, Vice President and General Manager, Asia Pacific of RealD.

Since its introduction, the RealD 3D

system has become the world's most widely used cinema 3D projection technology. RealD's patented technology delivers nearly double the light efficiency compared to other 3D systems, presenting brighter, better 3D images. Since 2006, RealD has established a strong patent barrier for 3D systems with nearly double the light efficiency. The intellectual property rights obtained by RealD cover the hardware structure, hardware design, and many inventive technologies of the system, and it has a total of more than 470 invention patents in countries or regions around the world, including China.

CHRISTIE'S MIKE PERKINS RECEIVES AWARD

Christie, a world leader in audio and visual display technologies, is pleased to announce that its Principal Product Developer, Mike Perkins, has been awarded the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Award in Scientific and Engineering, along with three other recipients, for his work on the design and development of the Christie E3LH projection system, developed in partnership with Dolby Laboratories. The Academy's Scientific and Technical Awards honour individuals and companies whose discoveries and innovations have contributed in significant and lasting ways to motion pictures.

The Christie E3LH Dolby Vision Cinema Projection System is the

March - May 2024 TW-12

first projector to bring both high dynamic range (HDR) and wide colour gamut (WCG) technologies to the viewing audience. The system can be used as a single projector head or dual projector head configuration with a patented relay lens that enables 3D stereoscopic presentations with full brightness and simultaneous imaging to both eyes for an improved viewing experience. The system has been installed in more than 300 commercial and non-commercial cinema screens, including 3D colour correction and review rooms in more than 15 countries.

As a pioneer in the cinema industry for more than 65 years, Christie was at the forefront of the conversion from film to digital and continued its tradition of innovation with the development of the E3LH, which started in 2012. The projection system was first available in June 2015 for the theatrical release of Tomorrowland, and its underlying technology has significantly improved the moviegoing experience: on-screen black levels jumped from the typical 2000:1 to a whopping 1,000,000:1 to make the black portions of a scene truly black and RGB pure laser illumination expanded the colour gamut beyond the standard DCI colour space.

This award marks the third Academy Award for Christie, having previously received two awards for technical achievements. In 1983, Christie and LaVezzi Machine Works received the award for the development of the first completely sealed, maintenance-free 35mm projector intermittent film transport device, branded the Christie Ultramittent. In 1998, Christie won its second Academy Award for the development of the ELF 1-C Endless Loop Film Transport and Storage System.

Samsung has installed the first Onyx Cinema LED display in Germany. Over the past half a decade, the tech giant introduced this innovative technology to cinemas in more than 120 countries, and Onyx Cinema LED remains the best possible solution for film screening.

Onyx Cinema LED is now shining bright at the Lamm-Lichtspiele arthouse cinema in Erlangen, Germany. It's the oldest operating cinema in Erlangen, with the first performance dating back to 1919.

Even though Samsung's Onyx Cinema LED display is a few years old, it is the world's first Digital Cinema Initiative (DCI)-certified cinema display for screenings. It remains state-of-the-art and vastly outperforms traditional projectorbased systems.

The giant HDR Onyx display installed at the Lamm-Lichtspiele art-house cinema in Germany measures 5.1 x 2.7 metres and has a resolution of 2048 x 1080.

The panel boasts 6.6 million lightemitting diodes that, when combined, create 2.2 million pixels. The display is based on the DCI colour space and has fantastic contrast with deep blacks and a high luminosity of up to 500 nits.

"We are proud to have brought the cinema of the future to Erlangen,"

said Lamm-Lichtspiele Managing Directors Elisa Coburger and Peter Zwingmann.

Samsung's Onyx Cinema LED display first made its appearance in the summer of 2017 at the Lotte Cinema World Tower in Seoul. More than 120 venues around the world now feature the technology.

At the heart of this transformation lies a colossal state-of-the-art 4K laser technology screen, providing audiences with images that are not only sharper and brighter but also enriched with deeper contrasts and

a broader spectrum of colours. Complementing this visual spectacle is a cutting-edge 12-channel sound system, ensuring a symphony of immersive audio that elevates the

as Luxembourg embraces the future of film entertainment with it's firstever IMAX cinema.

The opening of the IMAX theatre at Kinepolis Kirchberg is proof of its ongoing commitment to invest in the best cinema experience, Eddy Duquenne, CEO of Kinepolis Group, said. "Cinema-goers increasingly expect more complete, more intense cinema experiences, and we know from our customers in Belgiumwhere we have an IMAX theatre in Brussels and Antwerp - that IMAX meets these expectations in every way."

The seating was rearranged to fit the IMAX geometry specifications that allow every audience member to enjoy the same sound experience. And the screen was moved forward by around two metres to bring it closer to the seating, creating an even more immersive feeling. John Schreiner, IMAX Senior Vice President for theatrical development in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, who was in Luxembourg for the opening, said that the Kirchberg screen would be the only one in the grand duchy.

The IMAX cinema provides a distinctive viewing experience that surpasses what domestic streaming services can deliver. Leveraging laser technology, these cinemas offer sharper images with enhanced contrasts, deeper blacks, a broader spectrum of colours, and increased brightness. Simultaneously, the twelve-channel immersive sound system ensures a life-like sensation for audiences in their cinema seats. The spectacle unfolds on a curved screen, heightening the overall cinematic experience.

According to Kinepolis, all the new cinema sites are being equipped with IMAX Laser, a new generation laser projection system and a multichannel sound system exclusive to auditoriums. Immersive

by design, IMAX Laser was specially designed to offer crystal clear and realistic images and precision sound for an unprecedented cinematographic experience. It is distinguished by a revolutionary 4K laser projection system, equipped with a new optical engine, custommade lenses and a series of

exclusive technologies that offer brighter images with increased resolution, deeper contrast and the widest possible range of colours, exclusively on IMAX screens.

"IMAX 4K laser projection offers increased resolution, sharper images, deeper contrasts, and the widest range of colours available to film-makers, so that viewers can enjoy the most realistic images possible," the Kinepolis group commented.

Tickets are around 5.80 EUR more expensive than usual. However, the special experience also has its price. A screening in the IMAX hall at Kinepolis costs around 5.80 EUR more than a normal ticket. For a film that is too long - such as Scorsese's latest work, ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ - this means a hefty price of 19.50 EUR per ticket. A 3D film in the IMAX hall like ‘The Marvels’ costs 20 EUR per ticket

"IMAX is very happy to extend its presence in several countries and to open the very first IMAX theatre in Luxembourg," said Giovanni Dolci, Chief Sales Officer of IMAX. "This is the next step in our long-term partnership with Kinepolis, which continues to invest in offering its customers around the world the best cinematographic experiences possible."

TGV Cinemas and IMAX have enjoyed a successful partnership since 2011 and at present, IMAX partners with TGV Cinemas on seven locations in operation across Malaysia and one backlog, including the iconic Pavilion Bukit Jalil location. This agreement will increase the total number of IMAX locations for TGV Cinemas to 12.

Malaysia is a fast-growing market for IMAX, consistently ranking among the top 25 global markets for IMAX box office despite having only 11 IMAX locations currently in operation. The growth has spurred IMAX to move further into local films in Malaysia, with the company debuting its first Malaysia release, ‘Malbatt: Misi Bakara’ in August 2023. Recently, Christopher Nolan's ‘Oppenheimer’ became the number two all-time release in Malaysia, with James Cameron's ‘Avatar: The Way of Water’ holding the number one all-time box office position in the market.

ENHANCED THEATRICAL EXPERIENCE BEYOND BOX OFFICE & TECHNOLOGY

Recent studies have proved that viewers in a movie theatre are more likely to have a better overall experience than those in a home setting. Some of the leading cinema chains have invested in superior technology and incorporated the finer nuances of sustainability. All these investments are made to ensure building and retaining the customer loyalty, social responsibility and giving them the best viewing experience and smarter cinema. The experts delve into the various touch points in this interesting panel.

Panellists:

Alain Chamaillard-Head of Cinema EMEA & CIS, Sharp NEC

Friedrich Deininger-Sr. Director Cinema and Partner Management EMEA and India, Dolby Laboratories

Jaiswin T Jayan -Proprietor, Jaithra Cinemas & Entertainments

Jitender Verma-Chief Information Officer, PVR INOX

Rahul Dhyani- Co-Founder & Director, The CONNPLEX Smart Theaters

Moderator:

Akshaye Rathi, Director, Aashirwad Theatres

Overview

Moderated by Akshaye Rathi, the 'Enhanced Theatrical Experience Beyond Box Office & Technology' Panel Discussion is set to bring on a very broad conversation about the cinema industry while being held amongst a wide representation of all the aspects related to the exhibition sector. You can't deny that each and every aspect of a cinema plays the utmost important role in its own way to bring together the complete theatrical experience that should leave every moviegoer satisfied.

REVIEW
March - May 2024 TW-46

With the advent of the pandemic consumption patterns changing the big screen experience, great quality of projection becoming a paragoned to the kind of spectacles that we are seeing performing well in cinema halls, it has become very critical that you get the projection aspects really right. In terms of the latest projection trends and standards, Akshaye directs the opening question to Alain Chamaillard of NEC, "Where are we headed in terms of the new quality standards that we're trying to give to our audiences?"

Navigating the Future:

According to Alain, to him the most important aspect is the movie. The projectors have very little to do with how the audience may feel after watching a good or bad film, they only make the picture clearer for the audience to perceive it. But that is simply the beauty of a cinema, the whole experience does not depend on any one aspect, but on the many others- like the recliners, the sound, and more! He says, "The most important is that you as exhibitors, you need to give the best experience to the audience. If it's not the best of the best, people will stay at home"

In line with this, Akshaye brings in the impact that sound has in a cinema hall, especially in the recent releases of 'Pathaan', 'Mission Impossible', 'Oppenheimer', and more! All films that were driven forth by the deliverance of the sound effects that brought the action on screen to life. He points out that as moviemakers begin to experiment with the aspects of sound more, create more illusion and drama, the more important it is for the sound to become more enhanced in the theatre. He asks Friedrich Deininger on where Dolby is headed next in terms of offering the more immersive sound and an experience that cannot be replicated at home.

Friedrich says, “Following the pandemic, it became clear that people are returning to watching films in the premium format. Dolby strives to produce and improve the audience experience as well as the tools that will assist the storyteller in enhancing the film as much as possible, and while you can receive the effect Dolby at home, it will not be the same as coming to the theatre.” Friedrich described how sound has developed since Atmos was introduced nearly ten years ago. A concept that arose while

discussing ways to improve the user experience, and they have developed significantly since then.

Busting Cinema Myths:

In terms of the Indian exhibition business, there is enough room for every type of organisation to coexist exceptionally in such a diverse market in terms of disposable income levels. While there is an ongoing argument about how expensive movie tickets are, Akshaye points out that contrary to popular belief India has a considerably lower rate of movie experience pricing than most countries! There are movie chains and owners who prioritise quality over cost. He invites Jaiswin T Jayan to talk on the subject.

Being a single screen exhibitor, Jaiswin says that the most important thing to understand is that from the beginning he has never underestimated his audience. The true cinema experience in the last 10-15 years have been bought by PVR or INOX, and has been taken to a whole different level. An observation he made is that most avid movie fanatics are well informed about the technology, the latest cinema halls. These are your key audience who are truly there for the cinematic experience! The key is to always keep upgrading and always make sure that the viewer gets best experience while they are inside the theatre.

He says, "From the time of ticketing to the viewing and the leisure time that you are going to spend on your property. It has to be the most comfortable one."

In terms of whether the audience would prefer OTT or going to the big screen, he points out that there is no one way to decide this. That solely depends on the film being shown and how the audience would feel about it at the end. Cinema

March - May 2024 TW-47

owners should always keep upgrading regardless and making the cinema as advanced as possible.

Cinemas in the Digital Age:

In reference to the process of collecting data done through most streaming platforms, Akshaye poses the question to Jitender Verma, that cinemas do not have a particular two-way infrastructure, so how would a brand like PVR INOX go about doing so with its audience in order to enhance their moviegoing experience?

Jitender states, “The majority of data is obtained through web portals, phone numbers, and client behaviour in movie theatres. They prioritise studying the audience and how they choose to construct their own movie experience- whether at the F&B or when deciding which type of movie format to go for, or even the seating options. The theatre owners have considered everything. They make certain that they also conduct targeted marketing efforts to customers, so that if they have a history of going to one type of movie, the movie theatres would reach out to them the next time with something similar, in order to be their first choice”.

Customer-Centric Approach:

Akshaye directs his next question to Rahul Dhyani, asking him to describe the approach he and Anish took when entering the industry two

years ago, and what key elements differentiate their strategy, particularly concerning the customer experience and their focus on smaller auditoriums?

Rahul Dhyani says,”When I and Anish entered the industry two years ago, we started off with a primary focus on exploring ways to provide enhanced value and experiences for their customers within a specific segment. Ongoing discussions within the team revolved around continuous improvement and finding innovative ways to cater to our customer base. In contrast to some competitors, our strategy does not involve a simple race to increase the number of screens. Instead, our overarching goal has consistently been to deliver a distinctive and unique experience”.

He adds that in smaller auditoriums, the proximity allows for a more immersive sound experience, with 7.1 surround sound systems installed in the majority of their cinemas. The audience appreciates the planned approach, providing a neighbourhood, upscale cinema experience that transcends traditional box office and technology considerations.

Acknowledging the importance of quality content, the aim being to enhance the overall cinema experience by prioritising the environment and ambience. The focus is on taking the audience

beyond the mere technical aspects of projectors and sound, ensuring a more holistic and enjoyable visit.

Rise of Laser Technology:

Akshaye addresses Alain, emphasising the rapid evolution of technology, particularly in the context of projectors. Akshaye acknowledges the benefits of advancements by companies like NEC but raises concerns for longterm exhibitors. The dilemma revolves around investing in technology that quickly becomes obsolete, making it challenging to recover investments, especially in markets like India with lower average ticket prices. Akshaye seeks Alain's thoughts on navigating this delicate balance between technological investment and financial returns in a swiftly evolving industry.

Alain emphasises the importance of exhibitors investing in new technology, particularly favouring laser technology over older alternatives like Christie. He points out the rising costs of electricity in Europe and the US, making traditional technologies impractical. Alain advocates for laser technology, highlighting its efficiency in providing an excellent audience experience while simultaneously reducing electricity costs. He also expresses a preference for Arabic technology, emphasising its benefits in terms of both audio and visual quality. Alain

March - May 2024 TW-48

stresses the necessity for continuous technological investments in the cinema industry, especially considering the shorter lifespan of projectors and the ongoing advancements in the field.

Beyond The Blockbusters:

Addressing Jitender Verma, Akshaye highlights the significance of presenting movies in the best possible manner in cinemas and commends Jitender's pioneering efforts, particularly mentioning BTS concerts screened live in cinema halls. Akshaye acknowledges the limited control over the movies themselves but emphasises the importance of innovation in enhancing the overall cinema experience through innovative offerings. He seeks Jitender's insights on further possibilities in this regard.

Jitender mentions the successful

showcasing of concerts, including those of popular artists like Coldplay and BTS, in a unique 270degree screen format in Indian multiplexes. Despite the enthusiastic response and full auditoriums for such events, he underscores the cost-heavy nature of these technologies. The return on investment (ROI) can be challenging due to the additional expenses involved in shooting content in the specific format required. He says,

"The ROI can be sometimes shabby because the content has to be shot in that format also, so we get movies in that format. So ScreenX we had 'Mission Impossible', 'Flash'so the cost of technology is also a concern because the ATOP that command in the market is low but for these kind of content it's high but ROI still becomes a challenge." While acknowledging the lower market demand for such technologies, Jitender notes that there is a growing audience for alternative content, particularly among the younger crowd. The experimentation continues, driven by the interest of the youth who enjoy experiencing concerts on the big screen with their favourite stars and singers.

PANEL DISCUSSION 3

ACCESSIBILITY IN CINEMAS

The moviegoing experience is special for families and friends. But families with physically challenged, especially visually challenged members lose out on the special experience of watching movies with friends in theatres. This panel will look at how we can reimagine both theatre spaces and content in order to embrace this challenge and offer socially and commercially viable solutions.

Devang Sampat-CEO, Cinépolis India

Mani Ratnam-Film Director, Producer and Screenwriter

Overview

With a resounding applause directed towards Raghav and the

team of Big Cine Expo for facilitating stage accessibility, the anticipation for improved accessibility in

cinemas looms on the horizon. As the event commenced with a nostalgic nod to the ‘PS2’ era, the spotlight now turns to the worldrenowned Director Mani Ratnam for the first question. Delving into the intricacies of audio description within ‘PS2’, the inquiry acknowledges the creative prowess and perfectionist tendencies of the esteemed director. The query pivots towards the multifaceted role of a director, exploring how he juggles time and bandwidth while maintaining active involvement in the entirety of the creative process.

March - May 2024 TW-50

Art of Collaborative Filmmaking:

Mani Ratnam expressed candidly, "In all honesty, a director's primary responsibility is to assemble the right team. Whether it pertains to cinematography, music, or editing, every aspect of filmmaking demands collaboration with seasoned experts. There exist individuals who excel far beyond my capabilities in these domains. Consequently, I choose to collaborate with them. This philosophy holds true even in the present, where we witness the introduction of new elements-a commendable step forward. There are individuals with prior experience in these novel aspects, and we find ourselves on a learning curve. This marks the starting point, and our journey involves continuous learning and improvement as we progress."

Manoj Madhavan then inquired about the integration of audio description in the scriptwriting process during a recent conversation. He raised the question on whether this element would become a consistent part of his future projects and if it would be seamlessly incorporated into the overall workflow. The inquiry suggests a keen interest in enhancing the accessibility of his work, demonstrating a thoughtful approach towards inclusivity for audiences with visual impairments.

It highlights a conscientious effort to embrace advancements in storytelling that prioritise a more inclusive and immersive experience for all viewers.

Mani Ratnam articulated the view that a filmmaker's primary focus should be on crafting a film to the best of his abilities, allowing other elements to naturally fall into place. Mani Ratnam suggested that competent individuals are available to handle specific aspects of the filmmaking process, making it unnecessary for audio description to be explicitly included in the scriptwriting workflow. He emphasises the importance of respecting the audience, regardless of their backgrounds or abilities, and recognising their intelligence throughout the filmmaking journey.

Elevating Cinema Audio Accessibility:

Inquiring about Qube's initiatives in the digital cinema space, Manoj Madhavan directed his question to Senthil Kumar, acknowledging his pioneering role in the field. Senthil detailed Qube's commitment to enhancing accessibility in cinemas, particularly for individuals requiring audio descriptions of visual impact. The proposed solution involves introducing an app that connects to the theatre's Wi-Fi network, streaming audio directly from the digital cinema server.

He says, "We have been thinking about how to make this practical in a cinema and what we have come up with is, we are going to introduce an app that will connect to a Wi-Fi network that the theatre will have and stream the audio off the digital cinema server. So that, those who want it can wear the headphones and have just the audio descriptions in their ears. It won't disturb anybody else but it will help them enjoy the movie along with their groups of family and friends and therefore be an overall part of the experience. This allows individuals to wear headphones, enabling them to enjoy audio descriptions without disturbing others and enhancing the overall cinematic experience for families and friends.”

Senthil highlighted the costeffectiveness of this solution, with the setup requiring only a few thousand rupees for the appropriate Wi-Fi network. He emphasised the potential revenue boost for movies that incorporate audio description and closed captioning, citing a European experience showing a six to seven percent increase in movie revenues. This, he argued, stems from a broader audience appeal, as it not only benefits those with visual or hearing impairments but also attracts their family and friends, making it a compelling incentive for producers.

Manoj Madhavan directed his next question to Balamurali from the Central Board of Film Certification, Chennai, inquiring about the integration of audio descriptions and close captioning in cinemas, as per a directive from the Informational Broadcasting Ministry.

Balamurali clarified that the inclusion of audio descriptions can be part of the original material during the examination process if it is ready. Alternatively, if audio descriptions need to be added to an already certified movie, it must be done separately, akin to the process for subtitling. Balamurali highlighted the growing importance of a rightsbased approach, referring to the enforcement of the Disability Rights Act in a specific OTT release. He urged filmmakers to document the filmmaking process, making it more accessible and efficient for the certification process.

In the next question, Madhavan inquired about Amita's perspective on the evolution of the role of architects in ensuring accessibility for differently-abled individuals in cinemas, emphasising the spectacle of the design. Specifically, he sought Amita's views on how this scenario has transformed over the

past decade, particularly in the context of the emergence of multiplexes.

Amita Gore acknowledged the challenges posed by refurbishing existing structures, particularly those planned decades ago. She highlighted the need to adapt layouts to current trends and incorporate new facilities. In the context of cinema accessibility, Amita discussed challenges such as repositioning washrooms, altering layouts, and addressing issues like the absence of ramps. She pointed out instances where projects lacked proper planning for accessibility, emphasising the importance of suggesting solutions, such as providing ramps or alternative exits for differently-abled individuals, even if achieving 100% accessibility is not always feasible in refurbishment projects.

Inclusive Cinema Initiatives:

Manoj Madhavan delved into the realm of Cinépolis, a prominent multiplex chain, seeking insights into their approach to ensuring cinema accessibility for differentlyabled individuals. The focus was on understanding the initiatives implemented by Cinépolis to provide a comfortable and inclusive cinematic experience for this audience. This exploration underscores the growing importance of creating accessible spaces within the entertainment industry, reflecting a broader commitment to diversity and

inclusivity in the evolving landscape of modern cinema.

Devang Sampat expressed his appreciation for this chosen subject, highlighting that though they have been engaged in such work for many years, the focus was not always prominent. He outlined the various accessibility measures implemented in Cinépolis cinemas over the past 40 years, emphasising the wheelchair accessibility from mall entry to cinema entrance. In cinema halls, specially designed removable chairs in the first row accommodate wheelchairs, and all touch points, including the Box Office, F&B, washrooms, entry, and exit points, are made wheelchairaccessible. Devang stressed that these initiatives are considered societal responsibilities and emphasised their cost-effectiveness with proper planning.

He discussed the establishment of an audit committee to ensure functionality and accessibility and the training of staff to support differently-abled patrons. Devang also highlighted the potential business impact, noting the small

percentage of the population that currently goes to the movies and the need to cater to the 2.2 percent of the Indian population that can afford cinema visits among the specially-abled community. Devang concluded by addressing the lack of awareness about the International Day for Disabled Persons in December and pledged Cinépolis' commitment to celebrate this day annually, starting from this year, to promote awareness and inclusivity.
