MINDS HARE
As the curtains rise on the final months of 2024, the world of cinema is buzzing with energy. Globally, the box office has delivered a year of contrasts, with Hollywood tentpoles striving to regain their footing post-pandemic while regional markets in India and East Asia have quietly rewritten the rules of engagement. Indian cinema, in particular, continues to flex its muscles, riding on the back of homegrown blockbusters that have turned onceoverlooked Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns into crucial box office territories. With global and domestic audiences redefining what cinema means to them, 2024 has become a year of innovation, adaptation, and rediscovery in exhibition and storytelling.
The international box office has seen a dynamic lineup of blockbusters. DreamWorks’
The Wild Robot , directed by Chris Sanders, has charmed its way to a combined $300.5 million globally, while the third instalment in the Venom series, Venom:
The Last Dance , pulled in a solid $175 million, including $46 million from China in just five days. Holiday cheer sparked early with Warner Bros.’ action-packed Red One , grossing $28 million across 75 international markets. Meanwhile, Disney’s Alien: Romulus surpassed expectations with a strong $108 million debut. In India, South Indian industries continue to dominate, with several multilingual releases crossing the elusive INR 1,000-crore mark globally. Notably, Stree 2 became a standout hit with INR 579.4 crore, blending horror and comedy to critical and commercial acclaim. Kalki 2898 AD , stood tall with INR 620.8 crore, marking it as a milestone in Indian cinema. Re-releases added a nostalgic flavour to the year, with classics like Tumbbad (INR 30.15 crore) and Veer Zaara (INR 2.91 crore) performing remarkably well in limited runs.
The latter half of 2024 has also been a testament to the evolving role of cinemas as spaces of luxury and immersion. Properties like PVR INOX have set the tone with sophisticated upgrades, creating ‘canvas for the senses’ experiences. Pune’s MovieMax Mariplex Mall redefines multiplex culture with a seamless blend of film, food, and flair, while Gold Cinema’s Vidisha opening introduces recliner seating and private VIP lounges to smaller cities, showcasing the potential for premium cinema in untapped markets.
Globally, exhibitors have raised the bar. Bangkapi Cineplex in Bangkok offers a cultural haven with cutting-edge amenities, standing as a beacon for urban cinematic experiences. Kiwi Center in Switzerland celebrates its rebirth by marrying century-old architectural charm with technological brilliance. Meanwhile, Galaxy Cinemas in Vietnam weaves tradition and future-forward tech into an IMAX-enabled storytelling oasis. These properties, alongside Nairobi’s Century Cinemax and Vienna’s elegant Cineplexx Westfield, remind us that cinema is not merely about the films but the spaces in which we encounter them.
But before we dive into what’s next, we’d like to pause and reflect on the this year’s Big Cine Expo, held in Mumbai. To everyone who participated, we extend our deepest thanks – and we look forward to seeing you next year in Chennai, where the 8th edition promises an unforgettable event.
The journey of cinema is, as always, a mix of nostalgia and forward momentum. Here’s to the films, the technologies, and the communities that make it all possible. Let’s celebrate the successes, learn from the challenges, and continue to keep the lights shining bright in theatres worldwide.
Looking ahead, CineAsia 2024 is set to continue the conversation on the future of cinema. From 9th to 12th December in Bangkok, this global gathering will explore the latest trends in cinema exhibition, from cutting-edge projection technology to sustainable theatre operations. With markets like India and China redefining what box office dominance looks like, the dialogue at CineAsia promises to be as ambitious as the films that fill our screens.

TIMELESS GHIBLI TITLES
RETURN TO THE BIG SCREEN
In a delightful move for anime aficionados, Japan's Studio Ghibli announced a collaboration with Singapore-based mm2 Entertainment to rerelease Hayao Miyazaki's cherished classics in cinemas across Southeast Asia over the next five years. This distribution deal, revealed in September, encompasses 21 iconic films, including beloved titles such as Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, and My Neighbor Totoro The plan targets seven territories: Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and Cambodia.
The partnership aligns with Ghibli's recent strategy to monetise its esteemed library, which has seen significant success in China. The studio's My Neighbor Totoro raked in $26 million during a 2018 rerelease, followed by Spirited Away, which grossed $69 million in 2019. This trend of revitalising classic films for new audiences is set to continue as mm2 prepares for the first titles to hit screens later this year.
"This partnership allows us to bring these beloved classics to Southeast Asian audiences, where they can be enjoyed on the big screen as intended", commented Chang Long Jong, Group CEO of mm2 Asia. The company will spearhead marketing and distribution in Singapore and Malaysia, while collaborating with local partners in other markets.
Studio Ghibli's recent accolades further underscore its cultural significance. The studio received an honorary Palme d'Or at the 77th Cannes Film Festival and saw Miyazaki's latest work, The Boy and the Heron, gross over $250 million
globally. With an upcoming "World of Studio Ghibli" exhibition at the ArtScience Museum in Singapore, fans will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in the enchanting universe of Ghibli's storytelling. As Junichi Nishioka, Ghibli's Vice Presitent of international distribution, stated, "I am very happy that this opportunity will be a great help in bringing our works to even more people, and to the children who will be born in the future."
GDC LIGHTS UP PARIS' PATHÉ PALACE
GDC Technology has once again redefined cinematic potential with its LED media servers, now gracing the historic Pathé Palace in Paris, which has just reopened its doors after an extensive refurbishment. Originally constructed in 1929, this iconic venue has been transformed into a modern marvel, boasting seven screens that harmonise
comfort with cutting-edge technology, establishing itself as a sanctuary for cinema lovers.
Nestled near the opulent Garnier Opera House, the Pathé Palace is a bold assertion of what cinema can achieve in the 21st century. With a total capacity of 854 seats, the theatre offers an immersive experience, particularly in its flagship Auditorium 1, which features 431 sumptuous red velvet Club seats equipped with double armrests - an indulgence for serious cinephiles who relish the tactile allure of classic film formats like 35 mm and 70 mm. The remaining auditoriums, outfitted with Samsung's Onyx LED cinema screens, offer seating capacities ranging from 29 to 96, all featuring heated reclining leather seats, merging luxury with the latest in film presentation.
At the heart of this ambitious renovation is GDC's LED media server, which ensures seamless playback of content on these stateof-the-art screens. The introduction of GDC's DCI-compliant media server in 2017 catalysed a global shift towards LED cinema displays, and its continued dominance is evidenced by over 160 installations worldwide, with more than 80 percent utilising GDC's technology.
GDC's robust media servers feature a remarkable mean time between failures (MTBF) of 100,000 hours, ensuring reliability while supporting high dynamic range (HDR) specifications. This technology is instrumental in delivering spectacular visuals, including 4K playback at a staggering 120 frames per second in 2D, making it a fitting home for blockbusters like Avatar: The Way of Water.
AEON BETA CINEMAS SET TO DAZZLE VIETNAM
Japan's AEON Entertainment has announced an ambitious plan to open 50 new cinemas in Vietnam through a joint venture with Beta Media, with an estimated investment of $198.2 million. This collaboration aims to enhance the Vietnamese cinema landscape by establishing a chain of premium cinemas under the AEON Beta Cinema brand by 2035. The joint venture, officially announced on July, will focus on developing and operating these cinemas while investing in local film production and the distribution of Vietnamese, Japanese, and international films. The first AEON Beta Cinema is slated to open its doors in 2025, marking the beginning of a significant expansion across the country. With Beta Cinemas already leading the mid-market segment, operating 20 locations nationwide, the partnership positions AEON Beta Cinemas to capture a substantial share of Vietnam's growing film market. Nobuyuki Fujiwara, chairman of AEON Entertainment, expressed confidence in Beta Media's understanding of the Vietnamese market and its superior
marketing capabilities, stating, "We look forward to leveraging the strengths of both companies to bring the best entertainment and film-watching experience to Vietnamese customers."
The film industry in Vietnam has been gaining traction, with Deadline.com highlighting the country as one of Asia's fastestgrowing cinema markets. Despite its relatively short history, having transitioned from a state-run model only 10-15 years ago, the box office has exhibited a steady growth rate of 10 per cent annually prior to the pandemic, even surpassing Thailand's more established film industry. Minh Bui, Chairman of Beta Group, emphasised the joint venture's commitment to bringing new experiences and sustainable values to the community.
"The combination of AEON Entertainment's extensive experience and Beta Media's local insights will create groundbreaking development opportunities for both sides", he stated. With this partnership, AEON Entertainment is poised to play a pivotal role in Vietnam's cinematic future.
QUBE WIRE PARTNERS WITH GOLDENDUCK IN PHILIPPINES
Qube Wire announced a significant expansion into the Philippines, achieving a remarkable milestone by covering over 50% of the nation's cinemas through a strategic partnership with Goldenduck International. This development marks a transformative leap in the digital cinema delivery process across the archipelago.
In the past year, Qube Wire has successfully installed its electronic content delivery platform in over 100 cinemas, including major chains such as SM Cinemas, Ayala Cinemas, and Robinsons Cinemas. This rapid deployment continues, with plans to achieve complete coverage of all cinemas in the Philippines by the first quarter of 2025.
Mark Waterston, Executive Vice President of Qube Wire, expressed gratitude for the robust support from studio partners, highlighting the collaborative effort with Philippine exhibitors to tailor the platform to meet specific market needs. "We are thrilled to expand our network across South East Asia", Waterston states. "It has been a pleasure to work with the exhibitors of the Philippines to customise our platform to meet their unique needs."
Qube Wire's cloud-based delivery platform gained recognition for its
streamlined installation and operation, ensuring seamless content distribution. Using either 5G or broadband connections, encrypted content is delivered directly to installed theatres, creating a secure and efficient system for both distributors and exhibitors alike.
Sittiporn Srisanguansakul, Chief Executive Officer of Goldenduck International, lauded the partnership, describing Qube Wire's expansion as a game-changer for the Philippine cinema industry. "Their state-of-the-art technology and unwavering commitment to service excellence set a new benchmark in digital cinema delivery", he remarked, reflecting on the excitement for future growth and innovation.
LUKE JOHNSON ACQUIRES THE LIGHT LEISURE
The Light, a cinema and leisure operator, has been acquired by hospitality entrepreneur Luke Johnson and Risk Capital Partners, alongside a co-investment from Melcorpo. This acquisition fully recapitalises the business, bolstered by a substantial new banking facility, which paves the way for an ambitious investment plan exceeding £15 million over the next two years. The aim? To double the company's size.
Known for its innovative entertainment model, The Light seamlessly integrates cinema with a diverse array of leisure activities, including bowling, mini golf, interactive darts, climbing, and karaoke. Previously backed by Connection Capital, the company has positioned itself at the forefront of the evolving leisure landscape.
Luke Johnson expresses his confidence in the venture, stating, "I have spent 40 years building businesses in the leisure and hospitality sectors, ranging from Pizza Express to Gail's. The combination of cinema together with competitive socialising is a compelling offer for both consumers and landlords, and we believe the disruption facing the cinema industry provides opportunities." He views The Light's model as a sustainable solution to the challenges confronting high street cinemas rather than mere short-term fixes.
James Morris, Chief Executive at The Light, shares his enthusiasm about the new investment, remarking, "I am delighted Luke and Brian have chosen to invest in The Light, which allows us to release our exciting plans for the business." He underscores the importance of their talented team, which has worked diligently to develop a commercially robust model that not only protects cinema but also reimagines entertainment.
With plans to announce its largest project to date - transforming an old department store into a vibrant cinema venue - The Light aims to strengthen its commercial offerings. The company currently operates 13 cinema and leisure venues across various locations, including Addlestone, Banbury, Bolton, and Bradford, and looks forward to expanding its reach across the UK.
SHOWPLACE ENTERTAINMENT OPENS
DOORS IN SEYMOUR
Showplace Entertainment prepares to unveil its new theatre in the former Great Escape and Regal Cinemas location at the Shops at Seymour. With a tentative opening date in November, the community anticipates the return of a local venue that promises to revive the silver screen experience.
Since Regal Seymour Stadium 8 closed its doors in December 2022, following the financial turbulence of its parent company, Cineworld, Jackson County residents have found themselves without a nearby cinema. The nearest options are the AMC and Yes Cinema in Columbus, making the reopening a highly awaited event.
Mick Stieler, CEO of Showplace Entertainment, which has a long history in the cinema business since its founding in 1973, expressed his eagerness to launch the venue in time for the busy holiday season. "We'd like to open as soon as possible because there are some big movies coming out in November like Wicked, Gladiator II and then you also have Moana 2", he remarked, hinting at an exciting line-up for eager film enthusiasts.
Although renovations will commence next year to allow for the festive film offerings, Stieler has ambitious plans to revitalise the
theatre. "We're going to gut the place and make it feel brand new", he asserted, promising to enhance the experience with plush recliner seating and new auditorium curtains.
While the switch to recliner seating will inevitably reduce capacity, Stieler remains confident, citing successful transformations at other locations. "People love the recliners", he noted. Additionally, the plans for the venue include an entertainment centre next door featuring an arcade and bowling alley, promising to diversify the leisure offerings in the area. Ticket prices will be refreshingly affordable, with Stieler confirming that Showplace will not match Regal's previous pricing. "Our tickets will be under £10", he stated, aiming to make the cinema experience accessible to all.
The response to the reopening has already been overwhelmingly positive, with around 75 applications received for employment, a testament to the community's eagerness to see the cinema flourish once more.
MJR MARKETPLACE DEBUTS SCREENX
In a thrilling move for Michigan cinephiles, MJR Theatres and cinema technology leader CJ 4DPLEX have announced the installation of a ScreenX auditorium at MJR Marketplace Cinema in Sterling Heights.
This visually expansive 270-degree panoramic screen, extending from the central display across the side walls, draws audiences into a transformative viewing experience that extends beyond traditional cinema frames. As only the second
ScreenX auditorium in the state, it builds upon the success of MJR's initial installation at the Waterford Cinema earlier this year, capturing the imagination of Michigan's cinephiles and creating an unparalleled visual playground for blockbuster premieres.
"We are thrilled to expand the innovative ScreenX format to our Sterling Heights location this November", shares Joel Kincaid, Vice President of Operations for MJR Theatres. "Our launch of Michigan's first ScreenX at Waterford this past July was met with resounding success, and the reaction from our guests has been overwhelmingly positive. Expanding this concept to the east side allows us to reach more of our audience with this immersive technology, and we're very likely to add more ScreenX locations in the future."
CJ 4DPLEX Americas' CEO, Don Savant, echoes this sentiment, reinforcing ScreenX's appeal to those who seek a super-premium experience that elevates traditional viewing. "The incredible response to our Waterford location proves that moviegoers seek super-premium offerings and, more importantly, a completely different experience from the home", he says, suggesting that ScreenX's success signifies a
shift in what audiences demand from theatre-going today: an experience that engages and astounds, providing a tactile, collective immersion that standard screens cannot match.
In addition to the groundbreaking ScreenX technology, MJR Marketplace Cinema has revamped its seating to offer highend comfort tailored for the discerning moviegoer. Fully powered recliners span the auditorium, with select rows transformed into VIP Seats - MJR's exclusive luxury seating option, designed with thoughtful amenities. These seats offer premium heated reclining chairs, side tables, coat hooks, and private enclosures that lend a sense of personal space and intimacy. The upcoming release slate, featuring Gladiator II and Wicked Part 1, will mark the inauguration of this experience, allowing audiences to delve into immersive narratives within a luxury setting that enhances each sensory detail.
As MJR Theatres continues to push the envelope with ScreenX, it underscores a broader mission; a commitment to preserving cinema's social and immersive qualities in a high-tech, high-touch format that makes each screening a bespoke experience.

With its captivating music and bold reimagining of beloved characters, Wicked promises to enthral
audiences with both its grandeur and heart.
November crescendos with Gladiator II, charging into theatres. After more than two decades, Ridley Scott's Roman epic returns, this time following the journey of Lucius (Paul Mescal), the son of the late Maximus. With Rome's military might descending upon his home, Lucius is thrust into the brutal world of the Colosseum, pitting strength, memory, and survival instinct against ruthless foes. This return to the ancient arena, with a cast that includes Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, and Connie Nielsen, rekindles Scott's visceral cinematic artistry, pulling viewers back to an era defined by blood, loyalty, and vengeance.
Finally, the box office for the month closes with a warm and spirited journey across the Pacific as Moana 2 sets sail on November 27, running through December 12. In this sequel, Moana, guided by her wayfinding ancestors, returns to the open ocean, where new adversaries and mysteries await. The theatre will also rekindle holiday tradition with the return of The Polar Express 3D on November 29, with daily showings continuing through December 29. This Tom Hanks-led journey to the North Pole has become a yearly favourite, inviting families to share in the joy and wonder of a magical Christmas.
Complementing the feature lineup, IMAX will continue its daily screenings of educational gems: Animal Kingdom 3D, Blue Whales: Return of the Giants 3D, and T. Rex 3D. These 45-minute documentaries bring the wonders of the natural world into sharp, vibrant focus, adding to the theatre's commitment to entertainment that informs and inspires.
ART HOUSE REVIVAL AT JEU DE PAUME
The Jeu de Paume, long famed for its commitment to the visual arts, is now throwing open its doors to cinema. Nestled in the heart of Paris, between the Tuileries Gardens and Place de la Concorde, the historic centre is making a striking expansion into the cinematic arts, set to launch its own cinema theatre in November. With a mission that already celebrates photography and contemporary visual work, this new theatre is designed as an immersive space for arthouse cinema, turning a new page in the life of this Parisian landmark and offering a fresh sanctuary for film enthusiasts.
To commemorate the opening and mark Jeu de Paume's twentieth anniversary, the cinema will debut with a carefully curated retrospective on the iconic Belgian auteur Chantal Akerman, an influential figure in feminist and avant-garde cinema. Akerman's introspective and formally innovative films will set the tone for the cinema's mission. In a tribute befitting Akerman's legacy, the retrospective includes landmark works such as Jeanne Dielman, 23, Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles, a film recently lauded by Sight & Sound magazine as "The Greatest Film of all Time". The programme will also delve into her early works like Saute ma ville (1968), offering viewers a chance to trace Akerman's artistic evolution. This retrospective is part of the wider exhibition Travelling, which will run through 19 January 2025, offering visitors a rare chance to explore Akerman's life and legacy, enriched by exclusive archival material provided by the Chantal Akerman Foundation.

HOLLYWOOD'S HEARTBEAT: LAFCA AT THE EGYPTIAN
The Los Angeles Film Critics Association (LAFCA) has officially announced an exciting initiative to commemorate its 50th anniversary with a year-long screening series at the iconic Egyptian Theatre, commencing in January 2025. This collaboration promises a vibrant mix of award-winning guests, rare archival prints, and engaging discussions, all designed to celebrate cinema's rich history and its influential figures.
As a prelude to this milestone celebration, LAFCA has organised two exclusive preview events in 2024, paying homage to the visionary filmmakers Michael Mann and Todd Haynes. These events will not only showcase their remarkable films but also offer a rare chance for audiences to engage in live Q&A sessions with the directors themselves.
The first preview, slated for November, showcased a double feature of Mann's critically acclaimed The Insider (1999) and his seminal work Heat (1995). Both films have earned numerous accolades from LAFCA over the years, solidifying Mann's status as a master storyteller. The director will be present to engage in a thoughtprovoking conversation, moderated by Justin Chang of The New Yorker, providing audiences with invaluable insights into the intricate storytelling and thematic depth of
his films, as well as anecdotes from his illustrious career.
On December 9th, the spotlight will shift to Todd Haynes, who will present his poignant drama Safe (1995), followed by the visually stunning Carol (2015), which won acclaim and numerous awards from LAFCA. Haynes will join the discussion, conversing with Joshua Rothkopf of the Los Angeles Times, exploring the nuanced narratives and aesthetic choices that define his body of work. This intimate exchange promises to delve into the artistic vision that drives Haynes, allowing attendees to gain a deeper understanding of the films' cultural and emotional resonances.
Looking towards 2025, the anniversary series is poised to celebrate the films that have garnered recognition from LAFCA since its establishment in 1975. While specific titles and guest appearances remain under wraps, the series aims to illuminate the organisation's rich history and the transformative cinema that has influenced generations of filmmakers and audiences alike.
Katie Walsh, LAFCA Vice President, articulated the excitement surrounding the collaboration with the Egyptian Theatre, remarking, "When the team from the Egyptian reached out with the opportunity to collaborate on programming, we were thrilled. It's the perfect venue in the heart of Hollywood for us to showcase some of our favourite movies, as well as to spotlight the incredible talents we've awarded over our rich 50-year history as an organisation. We couldn't be more pleased to share these events with L.A.'s enthusiastic community of cinephiles."
The Grauman's Egyptian Theatre, often affectionately known simply as the Egyptian, is a landmark cinema steeped in history and glamour. Opened in 1922, it was designed as a lavish movie palace, complete with a stunning façade and opulent interior that has dazzled audiences for decades. Notably, it was the site of the world's first film premiere, cementing its legacy within Hollywood lore. Following a series of ownership changes, including a period under the stewardship of the American Cinematheque from 1998 to 2020, the theatre was acquired by Netflix, which undertook a meticulous restoration. The Egyptian Theatre reopened its doors in November 2023, now featuring a dynamic programming schedule with Netflix curating films during the week and the American Cinematheque taking the helm on weekends.
Through this extraordinary initiative, LAFCA is poised to enrich the cultural fabric of Los Angeles, inviting audiences to celebrate the timeless allure of cinema in a venue that embodies the very spirit of film history. All events are open to the public, ensuring that film enthusiasts of all ages can partake in this exceptional series.
E-TICKETING
STALEMATE
IN BANGLADESH
In the vibrant world of Bangladeshi cinema, where ticket queues snake around theatre corners, a pressing issue looms: the absence of a robust e-ticketing and box office system. While local films have been drawing enthusiastic audiencesevident in the throngs outside iconic venues like Modhumita Cinema Hall and modern
multiplexes like Star Cineplex - the industry struggles under a veil of opacity when it comes to box office revenues and ticket sales.
Despite significant box office hits such as Proyotoma and Hawa, the process of recording and reporting ticket sales remains archaic.
Observers note that while some theatres have ventured into e-ticketing, the majority still rely on manual sales, resulting in a fragmented system where accurate financial data is a rare commodity. In many cases, the figures touted by producers lack substantiation, leaving audiences and investors alike in a state of uncertainty.
The historical context is telling: Bangladesh has existed for over fifty years without a formalised box office system, a stark contrast to neighbouring India, which established such a framework more than two decades ago. Film experts argue that this lack of structure hinders transparency, enabling potential financial mismanagement and depriving the government of essential tax revenue. "The absence of accurate data allows for significant discrepancies", says Zahid Hasan, Owner of Tiger Media. "Without a centralised system, we risk losing both financial accountability and public trust."
Industry insiders echo this sentiment, calling for a collaborative approach that includes government oversight. They argue that establishing a unified e-ticketing
system is paramount. "Just as we buy bus and train tickets through apps with centralised data, we should be able to do the same for film tickets", asserts Shahriar Shakil, Managing Director of Alpha-I Entertainment. "A central server for all sales - both online and at counters - would provide immediate access to ticket sales data, fostering transparency."
However, achieving this vision requires more than just technical infrastructure; it necessitates a cultural shift within the industry. The challenge lies not only in implementing technology but also in uniting the diverse stakeholdersproducers, distributors, and theatre owners - towards a common goal. "Everyone must be willing to collaborate", states Anonno Mamun, a prominent Film Director. "We cannot achieve this with individual efforts alone."
The benefits of a proper box office system extend beyond mere transparency; they also promise financial viability for producers. With better tracking of ticket sales, revenue-sharing agreements can be more equitable, ensuring that filmmakers receive their fair share of earnings. This is particularly vital in an industry where underreporting can lead to unfair practices, leaving artists and crew undercompensated. In a system without checks and balances, even the success of blockbuster films can be clouded in uncertainty. Film analysts note that the lack of reliable box office data hampers marketing efforts and skews audience perception. As the demand for local cinema rises, the imperative for a comprehensive solution becomes increasingly apparent.
AUSTRALIA'S IMAX SURGE: EXPANDS TO GOLD COAST
IMAX Corporation, the iconic name in immersive cinema, has marked a significant achievement in Australia, surpassing US$7 million (approximately AU$10.5 million) at the local box office this year. This milestone underscores Australia's status as a top-performing market for IMAX, and it comes as the company prepares to expand its footprint in the country with a new cinema opening on the Gold Coast before Christmas 2024.
Since launching its first Australian theatre in Sydney's Darling Harbour in 1996, IMAX has demonstrated remarkable growth and popularity. The Sydney venue has quickly risen to become one of IMAX's top global performers, contributing to Australia's status as the best market for the company on a per-screen basis, averaging around AU$3.7 million per theatre - three times higher than the US average of approximately AU$1 million.
IMAX's new site at Event Cinemas Pacific Fair in Broadbeach will be the state's only IMAX experience, filling a notable gap in the Sunshine State's cinematic offerings.
Scheduled to launch on Thursday, December 19, 2024, cinephiles can expect the debut screening of Mufasa: The Lion King, alongside a robust slate of films for Boxing Day and beyond. This opening is particularly significant as Queensland previously lost its IMAX offering, with the South Bank Cineplex in Brisbane ceasing to show the format over a decade ago.
Richard Gelfond, Chief Executive Officer of IMAX Corporation, articulated the company's ambitions for growth in Australia, stating, "Australia is not only a top global performer but also a prime target
for our expansion strategy." The Gold Coast location will enhance the cinematic landscape, with IMAX anticipating that the new venue will cater to a growing demand for premium cinema experiences. The Pacific Fair theatre will feature a custom-built auditorium with a state-of-the-art IMAX 4K laser projection system and a 1.1:9 aspect ratio screen, promising audiences an unparalleled viewing experience. While the exact dimensions of the Gold Coast screen are yet to be revealed, its design aims to provide the immersive quality that IMAX is renowned for.
EVT's General Manager of Cinema Operations Australia, Daniel McCabe, expressed excitement about the new venue, emphasising the long-standing desire for an IMAX theatre in Queensland. He noted, "At EVT, our vision has always been to provide experiences that escape the ordinary, and IMAX embodies that ethos."
With an existing presence in Sydney and Melbourne, Gelfond's broader plans aim for the opening of 40 new IMAX sites across Australia. The enthusiastic response from local audiences further reinforces the decision to expand, with Gelfond stating, "2024 has already become the highest-grossing year for IMAX in the country since 2016."
As IMAX continues to solidify its
presence in Australia, the Gold Coast site represents a pivotal step in re-establishing the IMAX experience for both local audiences and tourists. With an evolving cinema landscape and a passionate moviegoing audience ready to embrace what IMAX has to offer, the company is poised to redefine the cinematic experience in Queensland and beyond for years to come.
EXCELLENCE IN EXHIBITION: SHOWTIME CINEMAS
Showtime Cinemas, a leading force in Taiwan's cinema landscape, is set to be honoured as ‘Exhibitor of the Year’ at the esteemed CineAsia Awards Ceremony on Thursday, 12 December 2024. The award, to be presented at the Millennium Hilton in Bangkok, will be accepted by Showtime's General Manager, Willy Liao, in recognition of the company's exemplary contributions to the Asia-Pacific cinema industry.
Andrew Sunshine, President of The Film Expo Group, expressed his admiration for Showtime's impact, stating, "It gives us great pleasure to present the Exhibitor of the Year award to Willy Liao and Taiwan's Showtime Cinemas. With a remarkable presence across Taiwan, Showtime Cinemas operates 17 multiplexes featuring 184 screens and offering a total seating capacity of 21,120. Holding over 20% of the market share, Showtime reaches 16 million customers annually, making it Taiwan's second-largest cinema chain.
MAJOR CINEPLEX BANGKAPI: A JEWEL IN THE CROWN OF MODERN CINEMA
Vice President, Major Cineplex Group
In Bangkok's bustling urban sprawl, a quiet revolution is taking place and it comes not in the form of skyscrapers or malls, but in the enthralling venue where stories come alive. As cinema grapples with a rapidly shifting global landscape, this new cineplex stands as a defiant outlier, one that refuses to be relegated to the nostalgia of yesteryears. Instead, it embraces the future with the kind of boldness that mirrors Thailand's own cultural dynamism - tech-forward, family-conscious, and unapologetically ambitious.
Step inside Major Cineplex‘s Bangkapi Cineplex and you immediately sense that this isn't just a place to watch films; it's a signal flare of things to come. It speaks more than just convenience - it's a microcosm of modern Thailand, where urban modernity is layered upon deep-rooted traditions, and where technology becomes a gateway, not a barrier. There's something almost poetic about the seamlessness of it all - it's cinema in 2024, liberated from the clunkiness of the transactional.
A Visual Feast: The Laser Revolution
There is laser projection technology in every auditorium - a nod to cinema's enduring love affair with the visual, where the screen transforms into a canvas of hyperrealism. Each frame becomes a meticulous painting, rich in contrast, drenched in colour and unwaveringly crisp. The beauty of this technology is that it doesn't discriminate - it elevates. A subtle indie film with lingering shots feels just as alive as the latest blockbuster drenched in CGI. Laser projection isn't just about
enhancing spectacle, it's about enhancing storytelling, a reminder that cinema at its core is a visual art. Bangkapi understands this. Here, every story gets the treatment it deserves, whether it's an actionpacked thriller or a gentle, introspective drama.
IMAX Laser Marvel: More than a Screen!
The IMAX Laser at Bangkapi steals the show. The eighth of its kind in Thailand, images ripple across the vast screen with a clarity that's almost unnerving, making you hyper-aware of every detail, every movement. It's immersive in the way
that only IMAX can be, but with Laser projection, the experience borders on the overwhelming, blurring the line between audience and film. Our IMAX with Laser Projector is called as brand ‘ IMAX with Laser’
What makes this particular IMAX offering even more curious is its sponsorship with Coca-Cola - a pairing that might seem odd at first, until you realise the symbolic weight of the collaboration. Coca-Cola, a global emblem of commercial pleasure, aligns with IMAX, a global emblem of cinematic excess. Together, they create an experience that's at once indulgent and
accessible. It's the kind of experience that has helped elevate Bangkapi Cineplex to one of the top 10 highest-grossing cinemas in Thailand - a fascinating blend of local innovation and international influence.
Kid Cinema: A Space for Future Storytellers
For all its technological marvels, Bangkapi hasn't forgotten the little ones. The 14th Kid Cinema in Thailand, tucked within the Cineplex's labyrinth of auditoriums, offers a reminder that cinema is, at its heart, about community. With its cheerful décor and child-friendly seating, Kid Cinema stands as a space for families to gather, for kids to laugh out loud without fear of disturbing anyone, for future storytellers to fall in love with the art of film.
But this isn't just about making cinema palatable for children. It's
about recognising that cinema, like childhood, is about wonder. The Kid Cinema offers that in spades, allowing children to have their first taste of the big screen in an environment curated just for them.
It's these small, seemingly insignificant touches that elevate Bangkapi Cineplex from just another multiplex to a place of meaning, where the love of film is nurtured from generation to generation.
M-STUDIO LEADING THE CHARGE IN TOLLYWOOD
Visarut Poolvaraluk, a key figure behind M-Studio, believes the company is set to become the leader in driving the ‘TOLLYWOOD’ movement, the descriptor for the flourishing Thai film industry. Over the past two years, Thai movies BO performance has grown to consistently capture more than 50% of the local market share, with M-Studio playing a pivotal role in this success. Poolvaraluk is confident that with a solid lineup of compelling Thai films in planning, pre-production and production, M-Studio can maintain this momentum and sustain the 50% market share for years to come. As the company continues to produce quality content, it reinforces the strength and continuing growth potential of Thai cinema.
Lobby: Prelude to the Perfect Show
Even the lobby at Bangkapi Cineplex feels like an experience unto itself, crafted by one of Thailand's leading interior designers. The space is sleek and modern, infused with playful elements - most lobbies feel like transitional spaces, but at Bangkapi, it's a space where guests are invited to linger, chat, and, in the age of Instagram, take photos. It's a subtle but deliberate choice, embedding the social experience back into the cinematic one.
A Bold Vision for Thai Cinema
In many ways, Bangkapi Cineplex is a love letter to the future of cinemaa future where technology enhances the magic of film rather than detracts from it. At its core, though, it's more than just a collection of high-tech features; it's a place that has thought deeply about what it means to go to the movies in 2024. It's a place that understands that in a world where content is king, experience is still the throne.
Bangkapi isn't just trying to survive in the streaming era; it's thriving by embracing the inherent power of the cinematic space - a space where people come together to laugh, cry, and be moved. Whether through its Laser projection, its IMAX spectacle, its cashless ease, or its familyfriendly offerings, Bangkapi Cineplex is a bold vision for what cinema can and should be in the 21st century. And as it continues to draw in audiences, it sets the standard for not just how films are watched, but how they are experienced.
TEE YOD 2: A THAI BLOCKBUSTER ON TRACK FOR 1000 MILLION THB BOX OFFICE
As of November 10th, Tee Yod 2 proves to be one of the biggest Thai movies of the year, with its box office earnings approaching 1000 million THB after just 30 days since release. Produced by M-Studios, a subsidiary of Major Cineplex, and BEC World, one of Thailand's most accomplished media companies, the movie has captivated audiences across the country with its gripping storyline and stunning visuals. Tee Yod 2 continues to dominate theatres, drawing large crowds and boosting Thai cinema to new heights. The collaboration between Major Cineplex and BEC World has positioned the film for massive success, showcasing the strength of local production in the entertainment industry.
MAJOR CINEPLEX ROLLS OUT EPIC IMAX AND FAMILY CINEMA UPGRADE
Major Cineplex, a titan in Thailand's cinematic landscape, is on an ambitious mission to transform the moviegoing experience for audiences of all ages. With a keen focus on cutting-edge technology and family-friendly entertainment, the company is expanding its premium offerings and solidifying its position as a leader in immersive cinema.
Already operating eight IMAX Laser theatres, Major Cineplex plans to elevate its offerings by increasing its IMAX Laser screens to 11 within the next three years. This state-of-the-art technology, known for its stunning sharpness and depth of colour, is set to bring films to life in ways that resonate emotionally, placing Thailand at the forefront of cinematic innovation in Southeast Asia. Our IMAX with Laser Projector is called as brand ‘IMAX with Laser’.
By the end of 2024, the company will install 400 Laser projectors across its network, enhancing brightness, contrast, and energy efficiency. This is merely the beginning, with a bold target of 1,000 Laser projectors over the next five years - establishing Major Cineplex as a technological trailblazer in Thai cinema.
But it's not just about tech wizardry. Recognising the importance of family-oriented spaces, the cinema chain is expanding its Kid Cinema concept. Currently boasting 14 locations that provide engaging, child-friendly environments, the company aims to increase this to 40 by 2025. With vibrant décor and amenities tailored for young audiences, these theatres foster memorable family experiences and nurture a lifelong love for cinema.
"We are committed to enhancing the moviegoing experience for every guest, whether through immersive IMAX screenings or our Kid Cinemas," stated Visarut Poolvaraluk, Vice President of Major Cineplex Group. "This expansion reflects our dedication to delivering world-class entertainment, ensuring every audience member can enjoy the magic of cinema."
REBIRTH OF A SWISS ICON
The recent renovation of this historic cinema reflects a meticulous balance between preserving its vintage essence and embracing new technological frontiers. The cinema's journey from its classic roots to a state-ofthe-art movie palace involved significant structural upgrades, innovative seating designs, and reimagined projection infrastructure. This marries the cinema's century-old heritage and charm with the brilliance of contemporary innovation.
For nearly a century, the Kiwi Center has stood as a cinematic beacon in the heart of Winterthur, Switzerland. This historic venue has recently undergone a transformative journey, merging its rich heritage with cutting-edge technology to create an unparalleled cinematic experience.
From its humble beginnings as a two-screen cinema, the Kiwi Center has evolved into a ten-auditorium complex, each equipped with the

latest advancements in projection and sound technology. A recent, major overhaul of screens one and two has been the crowning jewel of this ambitious project. At the heart of this transformation is a powerful partnership with ECCO Cine Supply & Service and MAG Cinema.
The recent modernisation is a testament to its commitment to providing audiences with the best possible cinematic experience. The cinema's evolution is a story of meticulous planning and execution. Over a year of careful consideration went into transforming the old theatre hall into a state-of-the-art movie palace. Load-bearing walls were reinforced, a new seating concept was implemented, and a creative solution was found to accommodate the projector in the absence of a traditional projection booth. Even the cinema's lighting was meticulously designed to transport audiences into a world of cinematic wonder.
"We had a lot of discussions on the subject of light/lighting alone in order to plan every detail precisely", recalls Thomas Rüttgers, Managing Director of ECCO Cine Supply & Service. "However, we were very pleased to be able to accompany the Kiwi Center on its gradual path towards modernity and believe that together we have achieved a successful result."

Tavano's sentiment echoes the Kiwi Center's overarching philosophy: to create a space where the magic of cinema can be fully experienced. This commitment to excellence is evident in every aspect of the cinema, from the carefully curated film selection to the impeccable service provided by the staff.
The integration of MAG Cinema's audio systems has been instrumental in elevating the cinematic experience at the Kiwi Center. The flagship Tower Screen System, installed in the largest auditorium, delivers exceptional sound quality and coverage, ensuring that every audience member is fully immersed in the audiovisual spectacle.

PALACE CENTRAL CINEMAS: FRAMING DREAMS IN SYDNEY
Something almost ineffably cinematic about this property - a theatre that, on any given night, greets you with the odd sight of city lights twinkling beyond the massive glass walls of the auditoriums, offering a rare juxtaposition: Cinema Framed within Reality. Now, this architectural ambition takes a technological leap, with the venue embracing state-of-the-art projection systems, a move as quietly audacious as their design…
In preparation for SXSW Sydney 2024, the flagship venue in Chippendale has upgraded five of its screens to Christie's CP2409-RBe projectors, signalling more than just an aesthetic tweak. It's not the usual trumpet blast of 'Best-in-Class Technology' one would expect - no overblown fanfare here. Instead, it feels more like Palace Central Cinemas asserting what it's always
done: honour the film experience by making it invisible, seamless.
These projectors, with their 2K resolution and laser efficiency, serve as invisible hands, gently sharpening each frame, deepening every shadow, and illuminating the image with just enough brightness to disappear. One can tout it the classic Christie touch: you're not
meant to notice the technologyyou're meant to sink into the story.
Christie's Phazer illumination will extend the life of these projectors for 50,000 hours, saving Palace Cinemas on operational costs and reducing environmental impact, but that's the fine print, the subtext. What really matters is what the audience feels as they sit in those
"Palace Cinemas has a proven track record of innovation, and their decision to deploy our RBe projectors keep them ahead of the curve. These projectors offer remarkable visual quality while providing excellent value through low maintenance, long-life performance, and high energy efficiency. We're excited to see Palace Central use this technology to enhance their screenings for SXSW Sydney 2024 and beyond."

plush Palace recliners, eyes fixed on the screen as their world narrows down to a single point of light.
"We're thrilled to continue our partnership with HOYTS and Christie", says Benjamin Zeccola, Chief Executive Officer of Palace Cinemas. Beyond thrill of adopting new technology at an iconic localeit's the ongoing conversation between art and the tools that make it possible. At Palace, it's less about the 'newness' of these projectors and more about the continuation of something deeper: that commitment to creating a space where films are respected, where the cinematic experience is worth stepping out of your living room for.
And yet, for all this forward-thinking technology, there's a touch of irony that Palace Central, with its gleaming new projectors, is in many ways a call-back to the golden era of moviegoing. An era when the theatre itself was a destination, where you dressed up, went out, and treated the film as an event. These projectors, laser-focused and whisper-quiet, make the film itself the spectacle once again. There's no need to distract with gimmicks or frills.
For SXSW Sydney 2024, where Palace Central will host much of the cinematic action, these projectors are setting the scene. They're the
"We are thrilled to continue our longstanding partnership with HOYTS Cinema Technology Group and Christie, whose state-of-the-art projection technology has been integral to our commitment to delivering spectacular cinematic experiences. At Palace Central, we strive to offer our guests not only comfort and elegance but also the very best in picture and sound quality. Upgrading our auditoriums with the Christie CP2409-RBe projectors ensures that we continue to set the benchmark for great cinema experiences, especially as we proudly host SXSW Sydney 2024."
– Benjamin Zeccola, CEO, Palace Central Cinemas
best kind of technology - the kind you forget is even there. It's not about delivering a 'better' film in the oversaturated market of hyperbole; it's about delivering the film as it was meant to be seen, in the way the filmmakers intended.
"We're proud to partner with Palace Cinemas once again, bringing Christie's advanced CineLife+ RBe laser projectors to their flagship venue in Sydney. With the installation of the Christie CP2409-RBe projectors, we are confident that Palace Central will consistently provide audiences with stunning visual quality and extraordinary viewing experiences."
– Adam Wrightson, Managing Director, HOYTS Cinema Technology Group
But this isn't just a Sydney affair. Across the continent in Perth, Palace Cinemas Raine Square has also been quietly upgraded, its luxurious Spanish leather recliners now paired with Christie's technological prowess. It's as if the best seat in the house just got better, without a single person noticing. And yet, as the lights dim and the film unfurls, audiences will recognise a transformation; the texture of the cinematic experience deepens, enriched by Christie's Technology. This is more than mere viewing; it's a sensory delight in the heart of Palace Central, where iconic cinema meets audacious elegance, forever redefining what it means to be 'At the Movies'.

CENTURY CINEMAX:
NEWFOUND MAGIC IN KENYA
Nairobi's cinematic scene takes a sophisticated turn, blending a dedication to quality and an embrace of advanced technology, creating a space where viewers find the comfort of home and the thrill of the unknown in every frame.
Century Cinemax has unveiled a new kind of magic in Two Rivers Mall, Nairobi, where the city's endless sprawl of savannah and sky touches the rhythms of a modern metropolis. Known to many as the 'Safari Capital of the World', Nairobi holds memories in its landscapes, which cradle Kenya's wild spirit, and its cityscape, which reverberates with the promise of progress. It's a place where the indomitable Maasai Mara draws adventurers to witness the Great Migration in all its primal wonder, while just a few kilometres away, lions prowl in Nairobi National Park, silhouetted against skyscrapers. This city, where history sways hand-in-hand with modernity, now holds a new chapter, and it is a surprising one: a state-of-the-art cinema.
In step with this spirit of old meeting new, Century Cinemax has
established itself as a hallmark of quality entertainment in East Africa. This time, though, they've gone a step further, installing Galalite's Mirage 2.2 screens, a cinematic revolution in high-definition. These screens, seven in total, represent the cutting edge of projection technology, offering optimised brightness, reduced visual noise, and contrast so precise that Nairobi's cinema-goers are treated to visuals that seem to radiate right off the screen.
For a city so rich in natural splendour, it feels only right that the same vivacity is brought to life indoors, too. As Kennedy Keriko, Marketing & Business Development Manager at Century Cinemax, reflects, "Century Cinemax takes pride in using Galalite Screens, which truly elevate the moviegoing experience. The brilliance and
sharpness of Galalite's projection technology allow for stunning clarity and vibrant colour reproduction, ensuring that every detail on screen captivates the audience". There's a certain poetry in the collaboration; Galalite's cutting-edge screens act as the silent conductor to every movie, transforming each frame into an intricate spectacle.
It's easy to see why Century Cinemax has grown so beloved in Nairobi, a city where the appetite for larger-than-life experiences is palpable. With its 4K laser projectors, Dolby Atmos sound systems, and now Galalite screens; every image is enhanced by Galalite's optimised brightness and contrast, emerging like a tapestry of intricate detail, from the subtlest character expression to the grandest of CGI landscapes,
capturing the eye of the viewer with a painterly flourish. These screens are more than just equipment - they are bridges to new worlds. The IMAX theatre, one of Century Cinemax's highlights, becomes a portal of unparalleled immersion, a place where viewers come face-toface with images so crisp they appear three-dimensional, thanks to Galalite's Mirage 2.2 screens.
Beyond the awe-inspiring visuals, Century Cinemax taps into Nairobi's evolving taste for luxury. With Barron VIP Recliner seats and a range of seating choices to suit diverse cinema-goers, the theatre caters to both a family audience and discerning cinephiles. As Nairobi's cultural palate broadens, so too does its desire for upscale experiences.
The innovation at work here isn't without substance. For Galalite, this partnership with Century Cinemax is part of a broader legacy, one that has woven cinematic sophistication into venues around the globe, combining sustainability with cutting-edge screen technology. As the first zero-emission screen manufacturing brand, Galalite ensures that its creations not only serve audiences but respect the environment - an apt detail for Nairobi, a city defined by its reverence for nature, even amid its urban expansion.
Two of the existing screens offer the comfort of Barron VIP Recliners, while two additional screens opening in November will welcome both Tate and Barron VIP Recliner seating. This touch of luxury elevates the cinema experience, creating a blend of visual splendour and comfort, an experience that acknowledges the rising demand for VIP cinema in Nairobi. It's clear the moviegoing culture has shifted, becoming a staple of the city's

social life. International franchises like Marvel and Fast & Furious are no strangers to Century Cinemax, where devoted fans gather to cheer, gasp, and escape. Their collaboration with Galalite marks a milestone for East African cinema.

VOX CINEMAS:
THE PINNACLE OF COMFORT
In a realm where the magic of film often intertwines with the mechanics of viewing, this flagship cinema has undertaken a major metamorphosis, crafted in collaboration with a renowned seating specialist, representing a need for premium seating upgrades for complete immersion and relaxation. Equipped with cocoon privacy panels, the cinema offers personal sanctuaries that transform the communal experience into an intimate retreat.
VOX Cinemas has undertaken a bold transformation that transcends mere luxury. At their flagship location in Dubai's Mall of the Emirates, they have not just upgraded their facilities; they have redefined the very experience of cinema itself. This metamorphosis, in partnership with Ferco Seating, represents a meticulous fusion of comfort, innovation, and elegance, setting a new benchmark for how movies are consumed and appreciated.
The venture commenced with a fundamental rethinking of what constitutes premium cinema seating. Gone are the days when comfort was secondary to the spectacle on the screen. Instead, VOX Cinemas has introduced Ferco's Premium Verona Zero Wall seats, which serve as the quintessence of indulgence. These seats are not merely padded structures but are engineered
havens of relaxation. With ultra-soft padding, pillow-like foam, and an array of motorised adjustmentsincluding lumbar support and headrest: viewers are enveloped in an embrace that is as soothing as it is sophisticated. The integration of a heated system on both the backrest and seat is not just a touch of luxury but a conscious nod to enhancing the sensory experience of cinema.
This thoughtful approach extends to the Cocoon Privacy Panels. Here, the concept of privacy is reimagined, creating personal sanctuaries within the cinema. These panels are more than functional barriers; they are stylish, cocoon-like enclaves that offer viewers an intimate space to enjoy gourmet meals while immersing themselves in the film. The swivel tables, which make dining easy and accessible, exemplify how design
can elevate the practicalities of cinema-going to an art form.
The Premier auditoriums, meanwhile, feature the Premium Milano Zero Wall seats, which are the epitome of technological sophistication. These seats are fully upholstered in sumptuous leatherette and are designed for maximum recline, providing a fullbody experience that enhances the visual and auditory aspects of film. The inclusion of smart swivel tables with built-in cupholders is a testament to Ferco's attention to detail, ensuring that every aspect of the viewing experience is tailored for comfort and convenience.
In contrast, the Premium Milano Glide seats in the other auditoriums offer a different yet equally compelling experience. The plush foam padding and luxurious upholstery are designed to cater to the demands of both comfort and style, while the smooth glide mechanism ensures that every adjustment enhances the viewer's immersion in the film. The practical design of these seats, including integrated cupholders, ensures that the functionality of the cinema environment matches the high standards set by the seating itself.
This meticulous overhaul extends beyond seating to encompass a complete technological upgrade. Enhanced screens, projectors, and sound systems are integral to the new VOX Cinemas experience, providing a crisp, immersive audiovisual journey that complements the physical comfort of the new seats. The redesigned private lounge and gourmet menu further enhance the overall luxury, creating a holistic cinematic environment that caters to all senses.
The impact of this transformation has been substantial. VOX Cinemas
has reported a remarkable 30% increase in customer satisfaction, a testament to the success of this ambitious project. The new seating and amenities have not only elevated the physical comfort of viewers but have also enriched their overall cinematic experience, aligning perfectly with VOX Cinemas' vision of redefining moviegoing.
This transformation at the Mall of the Emirates stands as a significant achievement in the evolution of cinema experiences. By blending state-of-the-art seating with cutting-edge technology and luxurious amenities, VOX Cinemas
has not merely upgraded their facilities but has set a new standard in the art of viewing. It is a reminder that in the realm of cinema, the audience's experience is as integral as the film itself, and that innovation and comfort can indeed co-exist in the most harmonious of ways.

Two uniquely designed halls - Lagom and Laurus - present cinema as an experience layered with meaning and intent. Lagom embodies Scandinavian-inspired balance that encourages relaxation and enjoyment without excess. Clean lines, soft textures, and an unhurried ambience invite viewers to surrender to the film in an almost meditative state. Meanwhile, Laurus, named after the laurel, speaks to a sense of achievement and elegance, draped in rich, subtle textures and opulent, deeply hued seats that exude sophistication. reds and greens recall the grandeur of the Nguyen Dynasty. Walking into Galaxy Aeon Mall Hue feels akin to stepping into a new era shaped by the old.
The theatre doesn't merely entertain; it gently educates, connecting audiences - particularly the young - with a heritage often lost in the hustle of today. In every detail, the cinema resonates with pride in Vietnam's cultural identity, yet remains at heart a modern place of leisure, a point where the past and present intersect seamlessly.
Galaxy Parc Mall District 8 (2024)
Opening in 2024, Galaxy Parc Mall District 8 introduces a refreshing take on cinema experience through its innovative ‘Park in the Mall’ concept. Rather than overwhelming visitors with greenery, this venue strikes a delicate balance between contemporary design and natural elements. The cinema's aesthetic incorporates modern interiors with
striking contrasts, creating an airy, cool ambience that entices guests to linger longer.
The seating is nothing short of extraordinary, featuring high-class leather upholstery, alongside a meticulously crafted lighting system enhancing the cinematic effect. Here, Galaxy has taken a modern architectural approach, merging elegance with intimacy, building a theatre that whispers rather than shouts.
The chain is a living piece of Vietnamese culture shaped by history and a passion for film. Galaxy Cinema sets the stage; and there is seat enough for riveting blockbusters to the subtle nuances of home-grown cinema. In the end, the brand champions the concept of theatre as a celebration of cinema; an invitation to not only experience, but also become the story. It's a quiet but bold reminder that in a world rushing towards the future, there is so much that deserves to be savoured.

languages for more than a century. From the iconic silent era of Dadasaheb Phalke to today's blockbusters, Indian cinema has evolved into a rich mosaic of
diverse genres, languages, and styles. Through memorable characters, catchy soundtracks, and breathtaking dance numbers, Indian cinema has become an integral part
of the country's identity. It continues to inspire a new generation of filmmakers, actors, and storytellers, cementing its place as one of the largest and most influential industries globally.
Reflecting on the industry's successes, I am inspired by the innovation and advancements we have made, as well as the incredible bond formed with the Indian audience - a true testament to the transformative potential of this art form. Today's audiences crave fresh narratives that resonate with their lives, and we are witnessing an evolution in storytelling. What people want today is storytelling prioritised with authenticity and diversity.
Whether it's the rise of cinema made in all languages or the exploration of unconventional themes, our films now reflect the rich heritage and legacy of Indian society. Our industry's remarkable journey is a testament to the creativity of our filmmakers, their perseverance, and the critical role of collaboration in our sector.
As we celebrate our accomplishments, we also acknowledge the responsibility that comes with them - motivating us to continue telling stories that resonate, educate, and entertain. We are a thriving entertainment
powerhouse. Cinemas remain the top out-of-home entertainment choice for most Indians, and this is evident from the impressive numbers that back it up. Sixty-five percent of India's population is below the age of 35, representing a vast and influential Millennial and Gen Z audience. This audience not only earns well but also spends well, fuelling India's growth towards becoming a global superpower.
To meet the diverse demands of this Gen Z audience and our cinemaloving nation - producing 1,800 films annually in 20 different languages - our cinematic infrastructure continues to expand. We are consistently opening new screens and cinema halls month after month, year after year, cementing India's status as a cinematic powerhouse.
Diversity in our films is not just about representation; it enriches our stories. India is a land of myriad cultures, languages, and traditions, and our films mirror this diversity. Today, we have an industry that resonates with global audiences and is committed to authentic storytelling. This is not merely a trend - it is a necessity. The world is watching, and they want us to produce films that represent true society. By embracing this diversity, we can connect with audiences across borders and cultures.
Today, we are also embracing linguistic diversity. The Indian film industry celebrates linguistic unity, uniting audiences across the country through storytelling that transcends language. Fans now enjoy cinema for the experience, regardless of language, as compelling narratives increasingly bridge linguistic divides.
India's cinema success story is written by talented young people from diverse backgrounds. Our industry's multidisciplinary nature makes it an exciting hub for professionals, and collaboration and creativity thrive in this dynamic ecosystem. This environment attracts talent from a wide range of skill sets - from creative visionaries and technology experts to F&B specialists; from design and architectural innovators to engineering experts; from marketing leaders, programming geniuses, and media planners to savvy real estate professionals. Our sector encompasses skills from every discipline imaginable, flourishing on diversity and synergy.
We also take pride in cultivating a collaborative environment that supports talent and creativity. The role of technology can never be understated - technology plays a crucial role in shaping the future of Indian cinema. From production to distribution to exhibition, the digital revolution has transformed how we create and consume films.
Filmmakers now have access to powerful tools previously reserved only for big-budget movies.
As we embrace new technologies, we must also prioritise ethical practices. How we use technology will define not only our films but the industry as a whole. Moving forward, let us harness technology to create immersive experiences that engage audiences in unprecedented ways.
In conclusion, the future of Indian cinema is bright. By embracing innovation, celebrating diversity, fostering global collaboration, and leveraging technology, we can create a cinematic landscape that not only entertains but educates

"When I walked in, I had no idea how grand this event was. As filmmakers, we tend to be insular, focusing on the filmmaking process and the theatre where it's shown. But it's truly eye-opening to see how many lives are touched through films and realise the larger scope of our industry.
this vibrant industry. Finally, the Indian film industry's global footprint is a source of national pride, showcasing our rich heritage and diverse perspectives.
Maddock Films has been built by directors and writers - they are our backbone. I wouldn't be here without the writers and directors who told such wonderful stories. As they say, there's always one decision that changes your destiny. For us, it was not Stree 2, but actually Zara Hatke Zara Bachke. Going against the grain, we released Zara Hatke Zara Bachke in theatres during a time when many thought such films wouldn't work in cinemas. But against all odds, we went and put it in theatres. And like they say, the rest is history. Clearly all of us sitting in Bombay do not understand India. Sometimes, the most impractical decisions are also the best ones. For me, to make movies with the background that I come from didn't seem like the wisest move. Cinema dares you to dream, and with conviction, you'll get there. Congratulations, Big Cine Expo. Upwards and onwards!"

AUDIENCE VIEWING PATTERNS IN THEATRICAL AND OTT

Overview
The global film industry is undergoing a seismic shift. What was once an unshakable institutionthe traditional cinema experiencehas been forced to reckon with an emerging rival: the OTT platforms that have risen to prominence in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This sudden transformation has given rise to a new era in film consumption, and the future of cinema now stands at crossroads. To unpack these changes and explore the evolving dynamics between theatrical exhibition and streaming, a distinguished panel of industry experts convened. Each
brought their unique perspective, shedding light on how audience behaviour, content creation, and distribution methods are being reshaped in the 21st century.
The discussion was an exploration not only of the rise of OTT platforms and the evolving role of cinema but also of the changing expectations of audiences and the cultural impact of this transformation. From the financial and logistical implications of streaming platforms to the future of the movie theatre experience, the panellists' thoughts were as varied as they were profound. At the heart of the conversation was the question: How can the film industry adapt to a world where OTT platforms offer viewers an unprecedented level of choice, and
traditional cinemas must compete with the convenience of streaming at home?
The OTT Boom: An Inevitable Evolution
The conversation naturally began with the surge in OTT consumption, a trend that has exploded during and after the pandemic. For Dayal Padmanabhan, a veteran Film writer, Director, and Producer, this shift was inevitable. "OTT didn't just emerge as a result of the pandemic; it was part of a growing wave that has been building for years. The pandemic simply accelerated it," Padmanabhan explained, highlighting the role of technology in the evolving landscape of entertainment. "OTT platforms offer flexibility, and in a world that's increasingly looking for convenience, it's not surprising that this shift happened."
This idea of OTT as a convenience is central to understanding its rise. Unlike traditional cinema, where films are scheduled for specific showtimes, OTT allows audiences to engage with content on their own time, whenever and wherever they choose. Padmanabhan continued, "What OTT provides above all is access. No longer are you beholden to cinema schedules or geographic limitations. This accessibility makes streaming platforms particularly appealing to younger generations who have grown up with technology at their fingertips."
But convenience isn't the only factor driving the popularity of OTT. Aashish Singh, Producer at Red Chillies Entertainment, pointed out that the financial model of OTT platforms also contributes to their dominance. "OTT offers a secure revenue stream for producers, which has been incredibly important in this
Komal Nahta, Editor-in-Chief, Film Information
unpredictable climate," Singh noted. "The subscription-based model means that platforms pay upfront for content, giving producers more stability in terms of financing."
This certainty contrasts sharply with the volatile nature of theatrical releases, where the success of a film at the box office is often an unpredictable gamble. In this sense, OTT platforms provide a safeguard for producers who might otherwise be hesitant to invest in larger, riskier projects. For Singh, the shift to digital distribution represents a sea change in the industry's approach to content creation and distribution. "It's a whole new business model. You would not have to rely on big opening weekends to make your money back. The OTT model creates opportunities for films to find an audience over time."
The Death of the Star System? Not Quite
One of the most intriguing aspects of the ongoing transition from cinema to OTT is the shift in what drives box office success. Traditionally, stars were the major draw for audiences, with big-name actors ensuring that a film would perform well in theatres. However, as Singh and Padmanabhan pointed out, content is increasingly taking precedence over the individual star.
"For years, the star system dominated the box office," Singh said. "But now, content itself is taking the spotlight. We've seen that films that might not have big stars can still perform well if the story is compelling enough." This is a point that resonates with the changing dynamics of film consumption, particularly with the rise of independent films that don't necessarily rely on A-list talent but instead focus on storytelling, character development, and emotional resonance.
Padmanabhan echoed these sentiments, noting that the rise of OTT has accelerated the shift away from star-driven narratives. "OTT platforms often prioritise content quality over big names, and in many ways, that's a good thing for the industry," he said. "It's a more democratic approach that allows for fresh voices and ideas to emerge. People are watching films and shows because of their narrative strength, not because of who's in the cast."
The success of films like The Lunchbox (2013), which didn't feature commercial star-power but resonated deeply with audiences due to its strong writing and relatable themes, highlights this trend. Singh suggested that this shift reflects broader societal changes. "Audiences today are more interested in stories that reflect
their own experiences or provide a window into worlds they might not have considered before. The focus on content means there's more room for diversity and unique perspectives in film."
OTT and Theatrical Cinema: A Symbiotic Relationship
Despite the undeniable dominance of OTT platforms, the panellists all agreed that the theatrical experience remains a vital part of the film landscape. While OTT has transformed the way people consume content, cinemas still offer an experience that cannot be replicated at home.
Kunal Sawhney, Chief Operating Officer of MovieMax Cinemas, underscored this point. "The cinema experience is irreplaceable," he said. "It's not just about watching a film; it's about experiencing it in a way that you can't at home. The scale of the screen, the sound, and the atmosphere - all of that plays a huge role in how we connect with the film." For Sawhney, the cinema remains a unique space for immersion, one where the collective energy of the audience heightens the emotional impact of the film.
Sawhney also touched on the importance of cinema as a social activity, particularly in India. "In India, going to the movies is a communal experience. It's
Rajeev Sharma, Chief Executive Officer, NY Cinemas
something families and friends do together, and it's woven into the cultural fabric," he explained. This idea of cinema as a shared event holds particular significance in regions where film culture is deeply embedded in the social structure. In smaller towns and villages, cinemas remain the primary form of entertainment, and this cultural tradition is not easily displaced by streaming platforms.
Rajeev Sharma, Chief Executive Officer of NY Cinemas, agreed with Sawhney's assessment, adding that while OTT is a powerful force, theatres still hold a unique appeal. "There's something about sitting in a dark room, surrounded by people who are all sharing the same emotional journey with you. That experience is special," Sharma said. "OTT may be convenient, but it doesn't offer that shared emotional experience, and that's something audiences still crave."
The Impact of OTT on Local Film Industries
As the discussion shifted to the regional impact of OTT, the panellists delved into the way that local content is flourishing on streaming platforms. Sharma noted that while OTT platforms have opened up global access to Indian films, there remains a strong regional divide in terms of how films are consumed.
"OTT has made it possible for regional filmmakers to find an audience outside of their immediate geographical reach," Sharma said. "In India, regional cinema has traditionally been confined to specific linguistic audiences, but OTT has allowed those films to reach a global audience. It's a huge opportunity for filmmakers."
This regional shift is significant not only for filmmakers but also for the OTT platforms themselves, who are increasingly investing in local content. "We're seeing a greater emphasis on regional stories in the OTT space," Padmanabhan noted. "This shift is pushing filmmakers to focus on stories that resonate with specific cultural contexts, while also allowing them to reach a wider, more diverse audience."
The growing demand for regional content on OTT platforms is a testament to the fact that audiences are looking for authenticity and representation. This trend is particularly evident in the success of films and shows in languages like Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and Kannada, which have found large audiences both in India and abroad.

FOSTERING TRANSPARENCY IN THE CINEMA ECOSYSTEM

Overview
In a rapidly changing landscape, the cinema industry in India - long dominated by Bollywood blockbusters - faces a new wave of
disruption. The shift towards more transparent data sharing, driven by both exhibitors and advertisers, is slowly reshaping the way films are marketed, consumed, and
monetised. At the heart of this transformation lies the question: how can the industry use data transparency to drive higher engagement and revenues for all stakeholders? A recent panel discussion, featuring key players from the world of cinema advertising, aimed to address this very issue. The conversation unearthed the challenges, opportunities, and potential solutions in the fragmented market, particularly in South India, where single-screen cinemas dominate and film consumption patterns often differ from those in multiplexes.
A Fragmented Market with Untapped Potential
India's cinema industry is nothing if not diverse. With more than 60% of
single-screen theatres concentrated in the South, the regional market offers an exciting yet fragmented ecosystem. The panel, moderated by Karan Taurani, Senior Vice President and Research Analyst at Elara Capital, kicked off with a conversation about the fundamental challenge facing the industry: data transparency - or rather, the lack of it.
In a market where occupancy rates are high but data collection remains inconsistent, the figures we often see - be it box office numbers or footfall statistics - are skewed. For advertisers, the absence of complete, granular data on audience demographics, ticket sales, and seat types makes it difficult to understand the true potential of cinema as an advertising platform. Without this transparency, the advertising spend on cinema as a medium remains small compared to the wider advertising market.
Bethanavel Kuppusamy, Product Head at iCount (Qube Cinema), framed the issue succinctly: while single-screen cinemas account for the majority of screens in India, they represent only a fraction of the cinema advertising pie. The sheer scale of this discrepancy, where the bulk of advertising dollars flow into multiplex chains, underscores the urgent need for better data
practices. The question, then, is how to bridge the gap between these single-screen exhibitors and the larger, more lucrative multiplex ecosystem.
Data Transparency as a Solution
Bethanavel, along with his team at Qube Cinema, has taken a proactive stance in tackling this issue. iCount, an AI-powered tool designed to track footfalls in cinemas, aims to bring much-needed transparency to the system. Using camera-based technology, iCount monitors the number of people attending a show, comparing it against ticket sales, and sends real-time alerts to theatre management if there is a deviation. This solution, according to Bethanavel, is focused on helping exhibitors - many of whom struggle to monitor the actual audience count at multiple properties - by offering a system that is both costeffective and simple to implement.
This ‘ground-up’ approach, as Bethanavel described, is crucial to gaining the trust of exhibitors. By presenting data solutions that directly benefit their operations, the goal is to demonstrate the value of transparency. And with transparency comes the potential to unlock valuable insights, such as audience demographics, which can be a goldmine for advertisers. With granular data, such as seat
categories (Gold, Silver, Recliners, etc) and audience profiles, advertisers can get a better sense of who is watching a film, how much they're likely to spend, and when they're most receptive to advertising.
As Bethanavel noted, "Eventually, exhibitors, including single screens, will realise that they have more to lose by not being transparent." This speaks to a broader shift in mindset: as the industry grows, the realisation that data-driven insights will drive better revenue from both film content and advertising will become a compelling incentive for exhibitors to open up their data to advertisers.
The Role of Producers
One of the most significant challenges in the industry, however, is the producer's role. Traditionally, film production and distribution are seen as a compartmentalised processes, and the involvement of producers in the broader marketing and advertising ecosystem has been limited. Yet, as the panel pointed out, the increasing importance of data and transparent reporting requires the involvement of all players in the value chain.
Mayank Shroff, Head of Film Programming and Distribution at Cinépolis India, spoke of the
evolving relationship between producers, exhibitors, and advertisers. While producers traditionally focus on contentan area where the shift from stardriven films to content-driven narratives is already taking place; there is an increasing need for them to share more data with exhibitors much earlier in the process. This is particularly true when it comes to marketing and promotional strategies.
The days when the biggest names or the highest budgets guaranteed success are dwindling. Now, even medium-budget films with strong scripts are finding success at the box office. This shift in consumer preferences has made it clear that early collaboration with producers on marketing data is essential for maximising the potential of films. As Mayank explained, working with producers to share demographic data, trailer views, and early buzz allows exhibitors and marketers to create targeted campaigns that connect with the right audience.
From Blockbusters to Medium Films
This shift in strategy is not just about changing how films are marketed but also how they are priced. Vikas Lokhande, Assistant Vice President at Khushi Advertising Ideas, discussed
Denzil Dias, VP & Managing DirectorIndia Theatrical, Warner Bros. Discovery
how cinema advertising pricing is still largely determined by the box office performance of big-budget blockbusters. However, he stressed that it's not just the megahits that should be driving ad spend. A film's success doesn't always correlate with the size of its budget or its star power.
Vikas's argument was simple: advertisers should not focus exclusively on the ‘big three’ films - such as Pushpa: The Rule, Bhool Bhulaiyaa, or Singham - that dominate box-office collections. Instead, they should look at the medium-budget films as valuable advertising opportunities, as these films too can offer targeted reach. By educating marketers about the broader spectrum of films and their potential, exhibitors can attract more advertising spend across a wider array of films, which in turn would help scale the cinema advertising sector.
For Vikas, the key lies in the data. Using insights such as trailer views, early ticket sales, and Google Trends, advertisers can gauge the level of audience interest and adjust their ad strategies accordingly. What's more, by incorporating metrics such as star power and director track record, exhibitors can refine their approach, even for films that may not yet have a huge following.
Cinema Advertising: The Digital Challenge
Yet, the push for transparency comes up against a formidable adversary: digital advertising. As Denzil Dias, Vice President and Managing Director at Warner Bros Discovery, pointed out, the biggest competitor for cinema advertising is digital. Digital platforms offer precise targeting capabilities, allowing advertisers to focus on specific demographics, locations, and interests. Cinemas, on the other hand, are still struggling to offer the same level of granularity.
For digital advertising to be challenged, Denzil argued, the cinema industry needs to evolve its data capabilities. Until cinemas can offer detailed demographic information, advertisers will continue to favour digital platforms, where data is already abundant. The industry needs to break out of the blockbuster-driven cycle, he stressed. With nearly 1,800 films released each year, a cinema advertising market that only capitalises on a handful of blockbusters is unsustainable.
Industry-Wide Collaboration
Finally, Rajkumar Akella, Managing Director of ComScore India, brought the conversation back to an essential point: industry-wide collaboration. The cinema business,

he explained, is fragmented, with no central authority to enforce industry-wide standards for data transparency. Unlike industries like television, where bodies like BARC (Broadcast Audience Research Council) have been instrumental in establishing a unified approach, cinema is still a patchwork of different interests and fragmented markets.
That said, Rajkumar noted that the global success stories of data transparency are numerous. Developed markets, he pointed out, have already embraced data sharing between producers, distributors, and exhibitors, creating informed decision-making processes around release planning, audience targeting, and pricing. While India may still be catching up, the potential benefits are clear. Transparency can lead to
better content creation, better boxoffice results, and, ultimately, greater revenues for advertisers.
The Path Forward
Despite the challenges, there is a growing consensus that data transparency in the cinema industry is inevitable. The tools, the technology, and the interest are all in place. All that is needed is for the industry to unite around a common goal and invest in the future. The panellists were optimistic that in the next few years, the cinema industry would see a shift towards a more transparent, data-driven approach. If this vision is realised, it could well lead to a more efficient, effective, and sustainable cinema advertising ecosystem, benefitting all players, from exhibitors to advertisers, and ultimately, the audience.

theatres is not one of competition but of coexistence. Both platforms offer unique experiences, and it is this synergy that will likely define the future of the industry.
For Sawhney, the hybrid model is essential for ensuring the continued relevance of both cinema and OTT. "The future of film distribution will not be one or the other," he said. "It will be a combination of both. Hybrid releases - where films debut in theatres and on OTT - are already proving to be successful, and this is the way forward."
Sharma echoed this view, noting that the evolution of the industry has made it clear that there is room for both OTT and cinema in the ecosystem. "The future is multiplatform," he concluded. "We need to find ways for both platforms to
exist side by side, without undermining each other."
The panel discussion was a thoughtful exploration of the ways in which OTT and traditional cinemas are navigating a rapidly changing landscape. As the industry continues to evolve, one thing is clear: the future of cinema lies in its ability to embrace change, adapt to new technologies, and offer audiences a wide range of ways to experience the magic of film. Whether through the communal atmosphere of the cinema or the convenience of OTT streaming, the movie experience will continue to thrive. The key to success, as the panellists pointed out, lies in embracing change without sacrificing the essence of what makes cinema so powerful.
