HARKNESS SCREENS UNVEILS HUGO SR: A LASER PROJECTION REVOLUTION

Cinema projection is about to be transformed. Harkness Screens, a leader in the industry, unveiled the Hugo SR at CinemaCon 2024. This groundbreaking 5th-generation 2D/3D screen technology is tailormade for the surging popularity of laser projection. Traditionally, screens haven't fully optimised the potential of laser projectors; but Hugo SR breaks that barrier. Developed through meticulous

research alongside industry partners, it unlocks the full power of laser projection, delivering stunning visuals with deeper blacks and brighter whites - a 15% improvement in contrast over traditional screens. Additionally, Hugo SR is built to handle the demands of cutting-edge High Dynamic Range (HDR) and Wide Colour Gamut (WCG) technologies, guaranteeing an immersive viewing experience. A common concern with laser projectors, particularly RGB models, is visible speckle. Hugo SR tackles this head-on with embedded technology that significantly reduces speckle by up to 30% compared to traditional screens. This allows exhibitors to confidently use higher gain surfaces without sacrificing picture-quality. Hugo SR boasts unique surface properties that not only enhance contrast but also create a visually whiter appearance. This eliminates hot-spotting and ensures a uniform viewing experience for every audience member, no matter where they're seated. "Hugo SR establishes a new benchmark for laser screens," says Harkness Screens CEO Mark Ashcroft. "We're committed to relentless innovation, and we're already developing nextgeneration screens that promise near-elimination of speckle while maintaining optimal gain profiles."

"Besides standard perforated white and silver screens, we now also offer the immensely popular microperf as well as our new Digi-perf options for our folded SeVision 3D GX line of cinema projection screens for international shipment. "Either one is the answer for current ultra highperformance cinema screens, depending on one's specific needs, and are the perfect solutions for 4K, 8K,12K and even higher projection resolutions as these

Both microperf and Digi-perf provide approximately 7% open space against the traditional 4.5% open space. And now, Severtson's new Digi-perf screens, like microperf, are also engineered for the optimum audio and visual experience available in the marketplace today. Digi-perf screens are available with all coating and gains, are foldable as with all Severtson cinema screens (excluding electric screens), and it reduces moire over traditional standard perf screens.

MAURITIUS CINEMAS GO DIGITAL WITH QUBE WIRE

MCine, the leading cinema chain in Mauritius, has announced a new partnership with Qube Wire to streamline their Digital Cinema Package (DCP) deliveries. This move marks a significant shift for the island nation’s movie theatre industry, replacing traditional HDD deliveries with a secure and efficient cloud-based solution. The new system eliminates the physical transportation of hard drives across Mauritius, ensuring faster and more reliable content delivery for studios, independent distributors, and ultimately, moviegoers. MCine has equipped all its theatres with Qube Wire’s user-friendly platform, enabling them to receive DCPs and Key Delivery Messages (KDMs) electronically.

“Qube has been instrumental in guiding us through this transition,” said Rajesh Calicharan, Managing

FUTURE

FRAMES: SONY’S VISION FOR ALOMA DRAFTHOUSE

Sony Pictures Entertainment has made headlines by acquiring Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, renowned for its unique blend of movies, dining, and vibrant events. This move marks a rare instance of a Hollywood studio owning a theatre chain, promising a strategic shift for both entities.

Alamo Drafthouse, headquartered in Austin, Texas, gained fame for its curated film screenings, gourmet

food offerings, and strict nodisturbance policies. Despite financial struggles exacerbated by streaming trends and pandemic closures, the chain remains a favourite among cinephiles.

Under Sony’s stewardship, Alamo CEO Michael Kustermann will continue to lead operations, ensuring continuity while exploring synergies with Sony Pictures Experiences. The acquisition aims to revitalise closed theatres and enhance customer engagement through live events and animethemed attractions. Importantly, Sony pledges to maintain Alamo’s diverse film lineup and distinctive brand identity, assuring patrons that the essence of the ‘coolest movie theatre’ will endure.

CINECITTÀ INVESTS IN A PREMIUM MOVIEGOING EXPERIENCE WITH CHRISTIE

Christie is pleased to share that Cinecittà, Germany's largest multiplex, has recently installed 12 RGB pure laser projectors, with more to follow. ECCO Cine Supply & Service supplied and installed the projectors. Cinecittà opened in 1995 in the heart of Nuremberg's old town. The multiplex, which has 24 screens, is built largely

underground and includes a movie merchandise store, various restaurants, and café bars, which are also open to the public.

As a result, the building is a versatile meeting place.

The multiplex is owned by the Weber family, who aim to deliver a superior moviegoing experience for their guests. "Technology plays a major role in the visitor experience," explains exhibitor Wolfram Weber.

"A movie should be presented in the best possible way so that all facets can be seen and heard. Watching a film on the big screen with the best possible picture and sound and hearing the audience's reaction is very different to sitting in front of a screen at home. You are simply more involved in the action in the cinema. A quote by Franz Kafka from the early days of cinema still applies today: 'Went to cinema. Cried'."

With Christie CP4435, CP4425, CP4420 and CP2415 RGB pure laser projection, the light output in the auditorium significantly improved for both 2D and 3D content. Weber explains that upgrading to these new laser projectors not only improved image brightness, but also reduced energy

consumption by about 340,000 kWh per year. With energy costs on the rise, it was important to implement energy-efficient measures.

Additionally, sustainability was considered in the decision-making process, as the new projectors no longer require xenon lamps, eliminating the need to dispose of consumables. Overall, the new laser projectors are more compact, energy-efficient, and sustainable, making them a great choice for the multiplex. "We have been supporting Cinecittà for many years. In addition to Christie RGB pure laser projection, we have installed Christie Vive audio in the Cinecittà's Cinemagnum auditorium. It's really nice for us to see Cinecittà and its guests enjoy the technical quality of the new projection systems," Thomas Rüttgers, Managing Director of ECCO Cine Supply & Service, explains.

In addition to the installation of more laser projectors, Cinecittà has plans to convert more auditoriums to deluxe screens. Wolfram Weber: "We currently have five deluxe screens, but the concept has been very well received by audiences and we still see room for improvement."

ARTS ALLIANCE MEDIA AGREES TO LIFEGUARD PARTNERSHIP WITH CINEMA 21

Arts Alliance Media (AAM), the global leader in digital cinema software and support, has agreed to a new software partnership with Cinema 21, or Cinema XXI, the largest cinema chain in Indonesia, and their affiliated integrator, PT Megatech Engineering, enabling Lifeguard to monitor, manage and optimise hardware and consumables. Offering a panoramic view of their network's devices, Lifeguard, AAM's versatile Hardware Management System will streamline Cinema 21's operations with intelligence and finesse, swiftly addressing potential show-stopping issues and enhancing business insights via robust automation and reporting capabilities. By leveraging the combined power of Screenwriter, AAM's flagship Theatre Management System (TMS), and their latest addition, Lifeguard, Cinema 21 and Megatech will seamlessly manage content and hardware for 1,312 screens across 248 locations, fostering operational excellence throughout their network. CGR CINEMAS CONTINUES UPGRADES WITH 100 CHRISTIE PROJECTORS

CGR Cinemas, the second largest cinema chain in France and the first cinema operator in EMEA to install Christie's RGB pure laser projectors, continues its cinema upgrades with Christie RGB pure laser projectors, the most energy-efficient projection solution for cinemas on the market. With more than 73 locations and over 700 screens, CGR was one of the first cinema chains in EMEA to offer Christie's RGB pure laser projectors that feature CineLife+ electronics and Real|Laser illumination, to provide moviegoers with an advanced cinematic experience. Today, CGR continues to work with leading French Cinema integrator, Ciné Digital to install projectors from Christie's wide portfolio of models, which include CineLife+ Series projectors in CGR's ICE (Immersive Cinema Experience) auditoriums across their remaining locations.

"Deploying Christie RGB pure laser projectors in CGR locations across the country means we are offering our moviegoers the highest quality image on screen," says Sebastien Bruel, technical director, CGR Cinemas. "We continue to elevate the cinematic experience through our ICE PLF concept, while future-proofing our investment with

advanced technology. Christie projectors are exceptionally bright, with true-to-life 4K resolution and are energy-efficient. We're pleased to continue our partnership with Christie."

"We've worked closely with CGR since 2007, and we're thrilled to continue our longstanding relationship with them," says Adil Zerouali, senior sales director, Cinema EMEA, Christie. "We share in their mission to deliver an exceptional moviegoing experience for their guests, and we trust that our RGB pure laser projectors will help them do so."

Christie RGB pure laser projectors with Real|Laser illumination bring an unmatched image to cinema screens and reduce energy costs by converting more lumens per watt, meaning they use less power to produce more on-screen brightness. Christie CineLife+ Series cinema projectors feature ultra-fast Series 4 processing electronics. CineLife+ expands the horizons of cinema projection technology by bringing advanced format capabilities to mainstream cinemas. Christie Real|Laser and a streamlined UXdesigned touch-panel bring the CineLife+ Series to the forefront of modern cinema. CHRISTIE RGB PURE LASER PROJECTOR

POWERS FIRST OMA CINEMA

A Christie CP4435-RGB pure laser projector is bringing screenings to life at a unique new cinema experience at Oma Cinema in Mougins, France. Inspired by

traditional Italian-style opera house balconies - and resembling a futuristic sci-fi layout - Oma Cinema features innovative architecture, utilising circular seating pods as part of a premium auditorium concept to improve viewing.

Christie partner Cinewest chose the CP4435-RGB projector to deliver advanced DCI compliant cinema projection, paired with a custom 7.1 sound system.

"We wanted to bring something different and offer viewers something special as part of a premium in-person visit, which couldn't be replicated at home," says Nicolas Chican, Co-founder at Oma Cinemas. "We saw a lack of evolution in cinema design in recent decades and felt that architecture could be a powerful tool to deliver something unique. We are manufacturer-agnostic, but we were pleased with the Christie projector that was chosen by our client, as it has excellent contrast ratio, high brightness and an impressive colour spectrum. It's not just about architecture, it's about the whole experience, and we can't wait to see what customers think."

Oma Cinemas in Mougins is the first ever Oma install, and features 160 seats, with five individual pods, as well as orchestra seating. Designed by architect Pierre Chican, the patented concept's 'vertical' seating structure is designed to concentrate seating pods in the optimal viewing area, moving the traditional 'first row' seats further back in the theatre, and the 'back row' seats

closer to the screen. Thanks to the radical design, the projector is also able to be installed perfectly midcentre to the screen, eliminating image distortion.

Christie CP4435-RGB features CineLife+ electronics and Real|Laser illumination as a compact, all-in-one projector which excels in image quality and operational lifetime while providing a low total cost of ownership. Thanks to its RGB pure laser illumination, colours are vibrant and detailed, delivering true-to-life images. "We're delighted that Cinewest chose the Christie CP4435-RGB for this exciting project at Oma Cinemas in Mougins, which will deliver outstanding visual performance," says Adil Zerouali, senior director of sales, EMEA Cinema, at Christie. "We believe that cinema delivers a shared experience like no other, and we want to inspire and engage moviegoers together with our partners. It's great to see innovation in the industry, and I'm sure that this bold concept will excite moviegoers." The Oma concept is fully customisable, and is available to be rolled out to other screens across the globe, to either renovate existing theatres, or be built from scratch. Each pod features its own unique access point, and is customisable with different seating configurations and comforts. It is also possible to incorporate a stage beside the screen to allow an Oma room to be used for live events and conferences. Rear access ensures no visual distractions - such as signage or other exits - intrude on the viewer's perspective. Thanks to the more vertical seating structure, space is saved at the rear of the screen, providing room to locate dedicated food and beverage areas and lounge bars. The first public screening at Mougins took place in April recently.

SUPERCINES OPENS NEW 10-SCREEN MULTIPLEX IN ECUADOR WITH CHRISTIE

Supercines, Ecuador's largest cinema chain, has just opened the 10-screen multiplex Supercines Orellana, which has been equipped with Christie cinema solutions, including RGB pure laser projectors, Christie Vive Audio and LCD digital signage displays.

T&T Cinema LLC supplied and installed all Christie equipment in the new complex. Supercines is a long-standing Christie customer and a good part of its cinemas are equipped with Christie projectors, audio, and digital signage. "We opted for Christie in this new multiplex, as we've had great results and reliability from the brand in previous projects," says Marcel Morán, general manager of Supercines. Supercines Orellana, located in Guayaquil, Guayas province, has a capacity for 1539 guests and includes VIP lounges, reclining leather seats, and personalised service.

9 of its 10 theatres are equipped with Christie CP2415-RGB and Christie CP2309-RGB pure laser projectors based on Christie Real|Laser illumination technology, which guarantees excellent image

quality and brightness levels above DCI standards throughout the lifetime of the equipment. "We decided on RGB pure laser technology for this multiplex because these projectors allow us to visualise images with better quality thanks to their wide range of colours, providing a more realistic experience for our customers," says Marcel Morán. "It is one of the best ranges of laser projectors on the market, and is easy to use, maintain, stable and reliable, with constant technical monitoring," he adds. Supercines chose Christie Vive Audio, including 130 LS2 line source and LS2S line source surround loudspeakers, for the sound in all 10 screens of the new multiplex. "The choice of the Christie Vive Audio system - which we already have installed in our Ceibos, Riocentro Quito and Ambato multiplexes - was due to the excellent quality and clarity of each of its channels. It provides us with a very detailed experience in all the sounds it transmits. This, together with a minimalist design that brings a lot of elegance to the cinemas, makes us very happy to be able to continue to maintain this choice”.

All these investments are made to ensure building and retaining the customer loyalty, social responsibility and giving them the best viewing experience and smarter cinema. The experts delve into the various touch points in this interesting panel.

Panellists:

Amit Kumar Sharma-Managing Director, Miraj Entertainment

Han Kim- Executive Director, Cinema, Asia Pacific, Christie Digital

Henry Noel-Director, Business Development- Cinema, Asia-Pacific, HARMAN Singapore

Satwik Lele-Chief Operating Officer, Mukta A2 Cinemas

Moderator:

Akshaye Rathi - Director, Aashirwad Theatres

Overview

The aftermath of the pandemic has left the Indian cinema exhibition industry grappling with unprecedented challenges. With admissions plummeting by 16-20%, multiplexes, single screens, and malls are faced with the daunting task of revitalising their businesses in an era dominated by streaming services. As audiences increasingly opt for the convenience of watching content at home, exhibitors must

innovate and adapt to survive in this evolving landscape. To better address these pressing concerns, an esteemed panel of key industry figures convened to acknowledge and discuss the urgent need for strategic investment and cost reduction. The post-pandemic survival of cinema exhibition hinges on meticulous planning and prudent financial management, as exhibitors navigate the road to recovery.

Amidst the financial strain, multiplex operators are exploring avenues to streamline operations and minimise expenditure.

Renegotiating rent agreements with developers and embracing automation to reduce reliance on manpower are now emerging as viable strategies to alleviate financial burdens and ensure sustainability in the long run.

Yet, survival alone is not enough to thrive in this competitive environment. Exhibitors must differentiate themselves by offering unparalleled moviegoing experiences that entice audiences

away from their screens at home. Technologies such as 3D, 4DX, and PLF hold the promise of delivering immersive experiences, "We must offer something truly exceptional, an experience that transcends the confines of home entertainment," insists Satwik Lele, COO, Mukta A2 Cinemas.

Furthermore, the symbiotic relationship between studios and exhibitors takes on renewed importance in driving audience engagement and box office success. Collaborative marketing efforts, informed by data analytics and targeted campaigns, hold the key to captivating audiences and reigniting their passion for cinema. In this new cinematic frontier, the quest for revival is also a testament to the enduring legacy of storytelling. As cinemas endeavour to reclaim their rightful place in the hearts of audiences, one thing remains certain - the magic of cinema endures, casting a timeless spell on generations to come. The only questions we sought to answer;

how does one go about a herculean task such as this?

Cue the Enhancement of Cinema Tech

The panel delved into the transformative role of technology, particularly in enhancing the auditory dimension of cinematic experiences. Henry Noel, representing JBL, elaborated on the concept of 'Sculpted Sound', emphasising its capacity to augment immersion and audience engagement. Akshaye Rathi added, alongside enhanced visuals, the sound experience is very well a character in its own right to the theatre experience. To which, Noel responded, "Cinematic sound brings the ultimate impact to the moviegoing experience, especially utilising surround sound." Providing historical context, he further explained the evolution of theatre acoustics alongside changing seating configurations:

"When the stadium-style seating happened, the acute response of

the theatre changed. And that had impacted the surround sound and sound information. So basically, the sound that people started to hear, was not the sound coming from above your head, instead, it was localised! It was coming from your left or right side. That sound information was not properly dispersed to the audience, because of the acoustical response that changed due to the stadium type of seating. There were two points to consider: one, the sound information was not getting a solid experience and number two, the coverage was not uniform. People sitting in the back rows had enough sound, the middle had what it could provide, but for the people in the front row, the sound was lost."

In response, JBL developed solutions to optimise the same, as Noel summarised, "With the existing line of products, we enlarged the sweet spot, and giving more surround information, to reach every seat of the auditorium."

However, tech is not the only answer, as Amit Kumar Sharma remarks, "It is actually the right set of content that you need to provide to be viewed." Han Kim adds, I'm not just talking about a new technology, you don't have to adopt new technology all the time. Whatever you have there is a way to improve

your baseline. I'm just talking about display quality. What people see is the brightness, to increase your brightness of your existing projector, you do the maintenance on your projectors or clean the deep cleanable white engine. It will enhance the experience of brightness and you watching movie. There is tremendous increase in the good experience of watching good movies. That is something that you cannot just recreate at home. Even if the TV size gets bigger, you cannot duplicate cinema environment at home yet!" This synthesis of compelling content and cutting-edge technology exemplifies the industry's ongoing efforts to innovate and enrich the moviegoing experience for audiences worldwide.

Diversification of Revenue Streams:

Satwik Lele spearheaded discussions on the imperative of diversifying revenue streams within the cinema exhibition sector. While acknowledging the centrality of content, Lele sheds light on the ancillary revenue streams such as private events and seminars. He remarked, "We've tried hosting birthday parties, private seminarsbut the contribution to the topline

from all these revenue streams has been absolutely nil." Despite the limited success of such initiatives, the panel remained optimistic about the potential for revenue diversification, particularly in light of increased per-patron spending post-pandemic.

Akshaye Rathi asked, "In terms of the inventory of seats in the country, are those being filled up? The answer is no, because the average occupancy level, especially in the northern parts of the country is nowhere close to being anywhere close to capacity. This brings an opportunity for alternate kinds of content and programming to come into play, where I think previously there was some conversation about how PVR INOX got various concerts to happen live and even one of the cricketing tournaments was broadcasted in cinemas." The dialogue underscored the need for cinema operators to explore innovative partnerships and revenue models to augment traditional ticket sales. Lele advocated for strategic collaborations between theatre operators and property owners to optimise infrastructure and revenue streams. He emphasised the importance of mutually beneficial partnerships, stating, "If the developer is ready to share the cost

of the capex, we are rather glad to come in as an operator and take care of the operational costs." This collaborative approach exemplifies the industry's resilience and adaptability in navigating evolving market dynamics.

Ultimately, while content remains the primary driver of footfall, the panel concurred on the necessity of exploring ancillary revenue streams to ensure long-term sustainability. As Lele aptly summarised, "Content is and will always remain what drives the folks to the cinemas." However, by embracing innovation and fostering strategic partnerships, cinema operators can unlock new avenues for growth and revenue generation in an increasingly dynamic industry landscape.

Exploring Alternative Content:

The discussion shifted towards the exploration of alternative content as a means to complement traditional film releases and attract diverse audience segments. Amit Kumar Sharma initiated the dialogue by highlighting the industry's experimentation with live sports streaming, gaming events, and live performances to diversify programming. However, he tempered expectations regarding the revenue potential of such

initiatives, stating, "It is actually a good point to talk about in a panel discussion, or in a stage or in terms of PR. But, honestly speaking, it does not really move the needle in terms of payment."

Despite the challenges associated with monetising alternative content, the panellists remained optimistic about its potential to engage audiences beyond conventional film offerings. Amit underscored the significance of catering to evolving consumer preferences, advocating for the inclusion of diverse international content to meet growing demand. He asserted, "I see that replacement of less number of content coming from Hindi film industry, or South-Indian film industry. This gap can be filled by content and quite certainly, there are takers to that. But one thing that I believe, the biggest opportunity in this entire period is alternative content from the rest of the world. If you look at the predominant India, anything which came to India it is Hollywood, but that's not the reality. It's the American films that you predominantly release. But when you look at it today, OTT consumers are consuming European content, East-European content, and Korean content & K-Drama is one of the biggest hits in this country! Even Indonesian films! Now what happened is, the situation from 2008-10 to 2020's, where satellite has actually fuelled South-Indian dubbed films in the North-Indian

language. And we can see the results today in terms of all the panIndian films, from 'Pushpa' to 'KGF' to 'RRR' and all of that. But that is exactly what is going to happen with the others: French films, Spanish films, and Anime. You look at Japanese films, they did very well, and similar would be the case for even a Korean film coming tomorrow. So, I see that replacement of less content coming from the Hindi film industry, or South-Indian film industry. This gap can be filled by this content and there are takers to that. Because if you're talking about how consumer behaviour has been changed by OTT viewing, I am saying that consumer behaviour has been changed for good also. Probably they're watching more foreign films. This content needs to be brought in, the content that people want to see, and I think the work has already started on that."

Satwik Lele echoed Sharma's sentiments, emphasising the importance of strategic curation and promotion of alternative content to maximise audience engagement. He cited examples of successful regional films and reiterated the need for targeted marketing strategies to promote diverse programming. Lele's also contributed some insights into the industry's commitment to embracing innovation and catering to evolving audience tastes in an increasingly globalised entertainment landscape. However, concerns were also raised in relation to future audiences and their taste and preference for localised content, as Akshaye Rathi put in, "One thing that scares me as an exhibitor are the ticket-buyers of tomorrow: are we grooming them well enough in terms of the content that they consume, and that is produced locally? There's hardly any Indian content that comes out that appeals to the demographic

that will grow up to be our ticketbuyers tomorrow."

Dynamic Ticket Pricing Strategies:

The intricacies of ticket pricing strategies and their impact on audience attendance and revenue generation is also an important aspect of the new changes.

Satwik Lele provided insights into the implementation of dynamic pricing models, emphasising the importance of aligning ticket prices with demand for specific films. He elucidated, "See it all depends upon the demand for that particular film. If there is a demand, you price the film according to that particular demand."

Satwik highlighted the effectiveness of slot-based pricing and differentiated pricing tiers for weekdays and weekends in optimising revenue generation. He emphasised the role of aggregators like BookMyShow in driving audience traffic through

promotional schemes such as 'Buy One Get One Free' offers for select films. Satwik's remarks underscored the industry's emphasis on flexible pricing strategies to maximise revenue while ensuring accessibility for diverse audience segments.

The discourse underscored the dynamic nature of ticket pricing in response to shifting demand dynamics and market conditions. By leveraging data-driven pricing models and strategic partnerships with ticketing platforms, cinema operators can optimise revenue streams and enhance audience accessibility.

As Amit Kumar Sharma aptly noted, "We definitely need some channels to drive them back, it won't just be the content alone, but it would be the pricing strategies as well." This holistic approach to revenue optimisation reflects the industry's commitment to innovation and adaptability in an evolving entertainment landscape.

•You Are What You Watch: Cinemas as a Cutting Edge Technology

Presenter: Walt Hickey, Pulitzer Prize-winning Author and Data Expert

In this talk, author Walt Hickey dives into the science of exactly what goes on when people go to the cinema, and how movies have a significant and measurable effect on people who watch them. Whether we're tracking where they look or how they feel, the chemical reactions in their body or the reactions of their nervous systems, Hickey shows how theatres engage the mind and body at a physiological level, and how exhibiting a film can reliably inspire a reaction as few other technologies can. The

immersion of a cinema, the deliberate and judicious use of viewer time, and the enhanced impact of cinemas as a distribution format was discussed, as will the frontiers of our scientific understanding of why movies and the theatres we watch them in matter. International exhibition and audiences are an increasingly crucial driver of success for a film, and this talk illuminated ways the theatrical experience is a universal one.
