In the great, ceaseless evolution of the silver screen, the business of cinema exhibition is proving, once again, that it thrives not just on spectacle, but on reinvention. Its clear adaptation must be the strategy. Globally and in India, investments are pouring in, technology is getting sharper, and audiences are, well, still showing up, albeit for the right films. But what does that mean for theatres themselves?
Internationally, theatre chains are making a strong play for retention by evolving beyond just ‘Going to the Movies’. The push for premium experiences continues, with large-format screens, high-end sound systems, and recliner seats no longer the exception but the expectation. Laser projection is on the rise, and while the battle between LED screens and traditional projection isn’t quite a war yet, it’s getting interesting. Meanwhile, collaborations between cinemas and streaming platforms are no longer taboo, with some exhibitors securing exclusive theatrical runs for streaming originals.
South Korea’s CGV continues to push the envelope with immersive formats like 4DX and ScreenX. Closer to home, the newly launched PVR INOX at the Mall of Dehradun brings the brand’s signature experience to the foothills. India’s exhibition sector is seeing a different kind of expansion — one where consolidation and growth go hand in hand. In India Vetri E-Square, a game changer, has created a behemoth with 2 EPIQ screens in Thanjavur, making it the first in the country. ROX DNC Theatres getting the first ever active 3D technology in the land of Salem. With an eye on Tier 3 and Tier 4 cities, the focus is on making the multiplex experience more accessible, an intriguing counterpoint to the global luxury-first approach.
And speaking off numbers? India’s box office, despite occasional turbulence, continues to deliver. With gross collections hitting INR 11,833 crore this year, it’s the second-best year on record — driven largely by regional content, which is having a moment. Pushpa 2: The Rule have stormed the box office, raking in over INR 1,642–1,800 crore and INR 1,027–1,200 crore globally, proving that spectacle-driven storytelling is still a bankable bet. Bollywood however, has been going through an interesting phase in terms of content. While commercial masala films and star-driven projects continue to dominate, there has been a noticeable shift towards more diverse storytelling. Chhaava continues its strong performance, with projections indicating it will soon surpass the INR 470 crore mark in India. The film’s sustained success underscores its widespread appeal and solidifies its position as a major box office hit in 2025. And Pushpa 2: The Rule had all the ingredients for a blockbuster – star power, hype, and a strong foundation making it ‘The Most Anticipated Indian Regional Films of 2024.’ We also have the re-runs hitting the crore club with movies like Sanam Teri Kasam and Tumbbad, which managed to bring huge crowds to the big screens although it gained good numbers on OTT.

DensonRandolph will be based in Los Angeles. She will report directly to AMC Chairman and CEO Adam Aron, and she will serve on AMC's Executive Committee. This leadership transition coincides with the departure of Elizabeth Frank, AMC's long-time head of Worldwide Programming and Chief Content Officer. Frank will assume the role of Chief Executive Officer of RealD, a leading global provider of 3D cinema technology, and AMC's largest 3D partner. As part of the leadership transition, Juan Antonio Gomez, Chief Partnership and Content Officer at ODEON Cinemas Group, will lead all film and content programming internationally for AMC Entertainment's movie theatres outside the United States. Based in London, he will continue to report to Mark Way, President, AMC Europe & Managing Director of ODEON Cinemas Group, and Gomez will continue to serve on the Executive Committee of ODEON. DensonRandolph and Gomez will pair and collaborate to ensure that a comprehensive array of film and alternative content continues to be seen on the big screens of AMC and ODEON. They will also strive to strengthen the already superb relationships AMC and ODEON enjoy
with movie studios and filmmakers the world over. During her 16 years at AMC Theatres, Nikkole DensonRandolph has made a profound impact on the theatrical exhibition industry and millions of moviegoers around the country, through her focus on and dedication to independent film, storytelling, and content that appeals to a wide array of audiences. In her most recent role as Senior Vice President, Content Strategy & Inclusive Programming, Denson led the planning and execution of AMC Theatres Distribution's two concert films, Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour, and Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé. She also has worked closely with the major studios through her leadership of AMC's Programming Promotions team, which leverages AMC's in-theatre and digital moviegoer engagement to stimulate more frequent moviegoing. Her extensive work has helped open new avenues for filmmakers and studios to bring their stories to the big screen. AMC Artisan Films, a program designed to celebrate character-driven stories from unique perspectives, launched under Denson-Randolph's leadership in 2019. Denson-Randolph also led and orchestrated the launch of AMC Independent, a highly popular film program designed to provide AMC Theatres' guests with on-screen storytelling from around the world and create a direct pipeline for filmmakers who are poised to distribute their own films theatrically.
Tim Richards, Chief Executive Officer of Vue Cinemas, will be honoured with the Global Achievement in Exhibition Award at CinemaCon 2025, the annual Las Vegas gathering of the world's theatrical exhibition industry. The event, hosted by the National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), will see Richards receive the award during the International Day Breakfast, a moment of recognition for his contributions to cinema exhibition across the globe. Richards' name is almost inseparable from Vue, the UK's largest cinema operator by box office and attendance. Under his leadership, the company has grown into Europe's largest privately held cinema chain, setting standards in luxury seating, cutting-edge projection, and immersive experiences that define the modern big-screen spectacle. Since its early days, Vue has aggressively expanded through strategic acquisitions, most notably its 2003 takeover of Warner Village Theatres in the UK. CinemaCon's Managing Director, Mitch Neuhauser, describes Richards as a driving
force in exhibition, someone whose vision and investment have kept the theatrical experience at the forefront. Vue's commitment to elevating cinema spaces-whether through premium formats or design innovations - has made it a benchmark for the industry. Richards' influence, however, extends well beyond his company. With over 35 years in cinema exhibition, he has been a vocal advocate for independent and British film, shaping policy discussions and steering industry organisations. His career began in law on Wall Street, but the lure of film led him to executive roles at Paramount and Universal's joint ventures, UCI and CIC, before becoming Senior Vice President of Business Development at Warner Bros. By 1999, he struck out on his own, founding Vue with backing from Boston Ventures and opening the first site in Livingston, Scotland, a year later. His work hasn't gone unnoticed. In December 2024, he was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) by King Charles III, a recognition of his contributions to film and culture. Richards has also served as Chair of the British Film Institute (BFI), following years as a board governor, and continues to hold key positions at BAFTA, the BFI, and the UK Cinema Association.
Arts Alliance Media (AAM), the global leader in digital cinema software and support services, has agreed a new strategic partnership with CineBid, a
technology provider specialising in digital cinema advertising, offering global Screenwriter users access to a pioneering programmatic advertising solution. With a mission to revolutionise cinema advertising, CineBid has developed the first programmatic advertising solution that seamlessly integrates both the supply and demand sides of the cinema industry.
By leveraging AAM's advanced Cloud and API services, AAM will serve as a gateway to digital cinema, empowering CineBid to deliver its pioneering solution to AAM's global Screenwriter network of over 45,000 screens. CineBid's innovative platform enables exhibitors and sales houses to digitise their ad inventory, providing access to a broader range of advertisers and optimising revenue streams.
By transitioning from traditional time-based, rate card purchases to a cost-per-thousand-impressions (CPM) model, CineBid allows cinema inventory to connect with advertising agencies' digital budgets, making it easier for brands to incorporate cinema into their media mix. This shift aligns cinema advertising with other digital media channels, ensuring it is valued competitively and unlocking significant growth potential for the industry.
"We are delighted to have agreed this international partnership with Arts Alliance Media and are looking forward to working with their forward-thinking team and
extensive client base, on the roll out of this platform," said Estaban Lupin, CEO of CineBid. "While all independent research supports the view that cinema advertising has the highest impact and commands superior emotion and attention spans, it has been sadly neglected due to a lack of appropriate technology, limiting participation to a narrow range of brands. By aggregating supply from exhibitors and demand from a broader range of digital clients, we aim to create a liquid, transparent, and independent marketplace that benefits all participants." AAM's suite of Cloud and APIs services play a vital role in streamlining cinema advertising operations. The Delivery API ensures seamless content delivery, while the SMPTE Logs API retrieves essential playback data. The Inventory API checks ad slot availability and theatre schedules, the Pack API enables rapid ad pack updates, and the Schedule Logs API provides real-time playback reporting. Together, these APIs significantly enhance efficiency while creating collaboration opportunities to unlock new revenue streams.
David Ong, Chief Commercial Officer at Arts Alliance Media, added, "We are proud to partner with CineBid, whose innovative technology and deep expertise position them as a front-runner in digital cinema advertising. By integrating their programmatic technology with our Cloud and API suite, we are facilitating new revenue opportunities for our global network of Screenwriter users. It's exciting to see the value in harnessing our advanced digital infrastructure to drive efficiency and maximise advertising potential in cinemas worldwide."

This boutique-style cinema aims to offer a diverse range of showings, from mid-week vintage films to family-friendly morning sessions, alongside the latest blockbusters. The original 10-screen cinema at Crystal Peaks operated from 1988 until its closure in 2003, making this a much-anticipated revival for local film enthusiasts.

Regal Cineworld's wide move to laser also offers a more environmentally friendly way to present movies with less waste, including the elimination of consumables such as xenon lamps and a significant reduction in energy usage. Barco and Regal Cineworld have a nearly 20-year history, starting in 2007 with Barco's Series 1 digital cinema projectors.
The collaboration between the companies expanded this year with the inclusion of three Regal Cineworld locations in the inaugural exhibition of HDR by Barco, the technology company's premium cinema HDR projection offering.

Digital Cinema Distribution Coalition (DCDC) has announced the extension of its partnership with Deluxe and EchoStar, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to revolutionising digital delivery for the cinema industry. This renewed collaboration underscores their shared vision to streamline content distribution and eliminate the use of physical hard drives (HDDs) across the United States. The existing partnership, in effect since 2013, has enabled digital delivery to over 3,000 DCDC-connected cinema sites via its satellite platform with Deluxe and EchoStar as DCDC's service providers. Over the coming years, DCDC's renewed partnership with Deluxe and EchoStar will focus on rolling out terrestrial connectivity to a substantial number of cinema sites, enabling internet-based delivery of movies, advertisements, and trailers. The existing satellite platform will also be upgraded to improve its delivery capability and ensure continued top-tier service standards. This upgrade ensures enhanced efficiency and reliability for content distribution. The overarching aim of this partnership is to transition every U.S. cinema operator to digital delivery via the DCDC platform. This will eliminate the use of physical HDDs as quickly as possible and thereby enable improved content delivery capability for every cinema in the country.

The cinematic landscape of Gainsborough is about to get a major upgrade as construction on a new four-screen cinema nears completion. The £9m project, situated in Market Place, has officially passed the halfway mark and is expected to be handed over to the Savoy Cinema group by May. If all goes according to plan, doors will open to the public early next summer. The development, which also includes two retail units, a restaurant, additional parking, and a pedestrian link connecting Marshall's Yard to Market Place, has been steadily progressing since construction began in March. The structural frame is now in place,
with the next phase focusing on brickwork and interior flooring. West Lindsey District Council (WLDC) has championed the project as a transformative investment in the town's economy, with funding contributions from the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership (GLLEP), the government's levelling-up fund, and Savoy Cinemas itself. The site was previously home to the Lindsey Centre, formerly Oldrids Department Store, which was demolished in mid-2023 to make way for the new complex. Savoy Cinemas' Managing Director, James Collington, promised that the new venue would bring a diverse cinematic experience to Gainsborough, offering blockbuster releases, classic films, and livestreamed events. Steve Gelder, Chief Executive Officer of Gelder Group, the construction firm leading the build, expressed his satisfaction with the progress, calling it a significant step towards revitalising the area.
Images Cinema, the historic singlescreen theatre in Williamstown, Massachusetts is set to undergo its first major renovation in 17 years, introducing a second screening room to meet the growing demand
for diverse film offerings. The project is scheduled to begin in September 2025, with the revamped facilities expected to open by February next year. The renovation will transform the rear third of the existing auditorium into a smaller screening room accommodating approximately 20 patrons, while the main auditorium's capacity will be reduced from 150 to 70 seats. Upgrades will include new seating with enhanced upholstery and improved sightlines, ensuring full wheelchair accessibility throughout the theatre. Established in 1916 by Hiram C. Walden, who converted a former Sigma Phi fraternity house into a silent film theatre, Images Cinema has been a cornerstone of the community for over a century. This renovation marks a significant departure from its traditional singlescreen format, aiming to accommodate a broader range of films without compromising its commitment to international and arthouse cinema. The closure of North Adams Movieplex 8 in January 2023 intensified local demand for varied cinematic experiences. Executive Director Dan Hudson noted that the current single-screen setup often forces difficult choices between major new releases and the theatre's staple programming. He cited the 2023 Barbie versus Oppenheimer release as an instance where the cinema couldn't cater to audience interest in both films simultaneously. Hudson emphasised the necessity of the upgrade, highlighting advancements in projection and sound technology over the past decade and a half. The addition of a second screen will not only enhance the technical quality of presentations but also provide greater flexibility in scheduling, allowing Images to offer a richer and more varied cinematic repertoire to the community.

Edinburgh's cherished Filmhouse cinema is undergoing a significant transformation, promising to rejuvenate the city's cultural landscape. Located at 88 Lothian Road, the Filmhouse has been a cornerstone for arthouse cinema since its establishment in 1979. However, in 2022, the Centre for the Moving Image (CMI), which managed the Filmhouse, entered administration, leading to its closure and the building's subsequent sale to Caledonian Heritable. In response to the closure, the 'Open The Doors' campaign emerged, driven by a coalition of former staff and cinema enthusiasts determined to preserve this cultural landmark. Their efforts bore fruit in July 2024 when, with backing from Creative Scotland and the City of Edinburgh Council,
a 25-year lease was secured, setting the stage for the Filmhouse's revival as an independent entity. The refurbishment, entrusted to Clark Contracts, encompasses comprehensive upgrades to the existing three screens, introducing new seating designed for enhanced comfort and improved sightlines. A notable addition is the creation of a fourth screen, expanding the cinema's capacity to showcase a broader spectrum of films. Accessibility improvements are also central to the project, including ground-level entry to Screen 2, ensuring inclusivity for all patrons. Beyond the auditoriums, the renovation extends to the public areas. Plans are in place to revamp the café-bar and foyer, creating more inviting and spacious environments. Upgrades to the building's acoustics and heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems are also underway, with a focus on enhancing energy efficiency throughout the historic B-listed structure. This ambitious project has garnered financial support from multiple sources, including the UK Government's Levelling Up Community Ownership Fund, the City of Edinburgh Council, Screen Scotland/Creative Scotland, and contributions from the 'Open the Doors!' crowdfunding initiative. The revitalised Filmhouse is poised to create up to 40 new jobs, contributing to the local economy and cultural scene.
Ginnie Atkinson, Director of Filmhouse, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with Clark Contracts, noting the positive progress and the tangible realisation of the refurbishment plans. The reopening, anticipated for the summer of 2025, is eagerly awaited by the community and cinephiles alike, marking a new chapter in the Filmhouse's storied history.
GDC Technology, a leading global provider of digital cinema solutions, announced recently that SF Corporation Thailand's premier cinema chain, has launched the country's first movie theatre equipped with DTS Surround Cinema sound systems in all halls. DTS technology delivers clearer, more dynamic surround sound effects, enhancing the overall audio experience for moviegoers. The AIB-3000 is a standalone 5.1/7.1/ 15.1 cinema audio processor that is compatible with all major DCI servers. It features new technology for the enhanced bass management. This technology creates a surround sound experience by precisely redirecting low frequencies from the surround channels to dedicated left and right bass management subwoofers. By compensating for the inherent limitations of surround speakers in reproducing deep bass tones, it ensures smooth and seamless audio performance. The DTS Surround Cinema is a certified auditorium distinguished by its innovative DTS Surround audio processor and advanced tuning practices, adopting the DTS Target Curve. To achieve auditorium certification as a 'DTS Surround Cinema', the speaker layout, including full-range surrounds,
must adhere to rigorous DTS Surround cinema installation guidelines for optimal audio performance. Theatres using the built-in DTS Surround audio processor and certified DTS Surround Cinemas can playback SMPTE and interop standard digital cinema packages (DCP) with 5.1/7.1 surround audio tracks. SF Cinema Lotus Yala is a new entertainment venue and the inaugural SF Group location in Yala's centre. It unveils a distinctive spot for locals, called Hollywood City, designed to emulate a cinematic environment. After a period of uncertainty, Garden City Cinemas has made a grand comeback, shifting its focus toward Indian-language films in a bid to attract a diverse and underserved audience. Once a staple for mainstream Hollywood releases, the theatre's reopening reflects a strategic pivot that aligns with the growing demand for South Asian cinema. With Bollywood, Tamil, Telugu, and Punjabi films leading the lineup, this relaunch is more than just a revivalit's a recalibration of what moviegoers in the region are looking for. The decision to spotlight Indianlanguage films is timely. In recent years, South Asian cinema has experienced a surge in global popularity, with blockbusters consistently making their mark beyond traditional markets. Streaming platforms and international releases have helped these films reach wider audiences, but the theatrical experience remains unmatched. Garden City Cinemas is capitalising on this momentum, positioning itself as a dedicated hub for films that might otherwise struggle for screen space in the region's multiplexes. Industry experts suggest this move could serve as a model for independent theatres looking to differentiate themselves in a competitive landscape. The exhibition sector
has faced increasing challenges with streaming services reshaping viewing habits and major studios cutting back on theatrical releases. By catering to a loyal and passionate audience, Garden City Cinemas is tapping into a niche with high engagement potential. If executed well, this approach could ensure steady footfall and long-term sustainability for the theatre. The reopening has already seen a promising response, with early screenings drawing impressive crowds. Word-of-mouth and community-driven enthusiasm will play a significant role in the theatre's continued success, and much will depend on the consistency of content, the quality of the viewing experience, and the theatre's ability to market itself effectively. Beyond just screening films, Garden City Cinemas could benefit from hosting special events, celebrity appearances, and festival tie-ins to strengthen its presence in the local cultural landscape.

Just last week, EssenceMediacom Denmark became the first agency to utilise programmatic cinema advertising, with their debut campaign for Specsavers that launched in the early week of 2025. This new programmatic trading desk allows advertisers and agencies to purchase targeted digital cinema inventory based on real-time audience data. Each campaign is driven not only by impressions but also by digital conversions: a digital campaign voucher is distributed to the audience when the ad plays on the big screen, offering both high-quality, brand-safe impressions with exceptional viewer attention, as well as low-funnel conversion opportunities through voucher distribution. Audience targeting leverages real-time data from the live audience in each cinema auditorium, combining this with additional data sources to create audience profiles for each show. These profiles are then matched to campaign targets on the demand side. Real-time audience data is collected via Cinemataztic's CineGame app or alternatively via a new audience LIVE competition and profile survey where the CineGame format is not a part of the preshow. The latter version is called 'Programmatic Direct'. The Cinemataztic trade desk is now
launched with Nordisk Film Biografer & Dansk Reklame Film A/S in Denmark and with Finnkino Oy in Finland. With new advertisers like Specsavers finding their way to the cinema preshow by re-allocating part of their digital video budget more markets have planned to adapt the new platform in 2025.

Over time, the Company expects XL at AMC to be available in 200 to 250 U.S. locations.

This consortium acquired the site in 2012, aiming to transform the historic power station into a vibrant mixed-use development.
Originally constructed in the 1930s, Battersea Power Station was a significant contributor to London's electricity supply, at its peak generating a fifth of the city's power. After ceasing operations in the 1980s, the building remained dormant until the recent redevelopment efforts.

The development of the cinema within a historic structure posed several challenges. Architects and engineers had to navigate the complexities of retrofitting modern amenities into the existing framework without compromising the building's integrity. Ensuring
optimal acoustics within the industrial space required innovative soundproofing solutions to prevent external noise interference. Additionally, integrating advanced projection and sound systems demanded meticulous planning to accommodate the necessary infrastructure within the preserved architecture.
Concessions at the cinema are curated to enhance the luxury experience. The in-house bar offers a selection of fine wines, champagnes, craft beers, and house-made cocktails. Gourmet snacks, including artisanal popcorn and a variety of sweet and savoury treats, are available for patrons to enjoy during screenings. These offerings are thoughtfully selected

By honouring the architectural legacy of the building while incorporating state-of-the-art technology and amenities, the cinema offers a distinctive and enriching experience for all who visit.
The London Power Company (LPC) planned Battersea as the solution for the rapidly rising demand for electricity in London during the 1920s. The objective was to generate 400MW, more than the combined output of LPC's nine other power stations, with LPC keen on a central London site as this was considered more economical than a remote location. There was fierce opposition to the proposal, with concerns that sulphur emissions would damage buildings and affect people's health. These concerns were met by proposing a novel flue gaswashing system to remove most of the sulphur.
Designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, the power station was to be built in two halves. The first half was constructed between 1928 and 1933 and reflected the prevailing art deco style of the time, with the control room panelled in marble and faience-clad walls and terrazzo flooring to the turbine hall. Battersea A consisted of two chimneys, turbine hall A and the west switch house. At the time it was the most efficient coal-fired power station in the world.
Battersea B was a mirror of the A station and was built during the Second World War, when costs were extremely tight, which meant that the B station was much more austere than its glamorous twin. In a move that anticipated the future, Battersea added a district heating scheme, using waste heat to supply 1,600 homes in neighbouring Pimlico.
The power station did not reach its maximum output until the early 1950s, when the last generating set was installed. At its peak Battersea was burning 10,000 tonnes of coal a week to produce 509MW of electricity, about 20% of London's power needs.
Battersea A closed in 1975, with the whole power station ceasing to generate electricity in 1983. It was listed in 1980, in recognition of the affection Londoners had for the building, ensuring that it would remain part of the London skyline far into the future.
One of the UK's oldest and most cherished cinemas, the 109-year-old movie heritage site in Leeds has undergone extensive restoration over the past years. The work included repairs to its façade and external lamppost, the restoration of its original terrazzo flooring, and the refurbishment of its nine historic gas lights, which will be lit for every screening. In addition, to preserving its heritage, the cinema has introduced new accessible facilities, including a ramped entrance, a Café Bar, a Community Room, a platform lift, and a wheelchair-accessible toilet. A brand-new 50-seat second screen, located in the basement, opened a few months earlier, enabling the Picture House to expand its programming and bring even more award-winning films from around the world to Leeds.
Nestled in the heart of Leeds, the Hyde Park Picture House stands as a testament to the golden age of

core vision is to preserve the rich heritage of early 20th-century cinema while embracing modern technological advancements, creating an unparalleled moviegoing atmosphere. Distinct from its contemporaries, the Picture House combines its original architectural features with a curated selection of films, ranging from mainstream releases to independent and arthouse productions, fostering a diverse cinematic culture.
The Hyde Park Picture House was originally designed by architects Thomas Winn & Sons and opened its doors on November 7, 1914.
Over the years, it has undergone significant transformations to preserve its historical essence while enhancing the audience experience. A major renovation project, known as the Picture House Project, commenced in April 2021 and was completed by June 2023. This £3 million refurbishment aimed to conserve the building's fabric, address urgent repair needs, and introduce modern amenities.
Architecturally, the cinema boasts a distinctive red-brick façade adorned with white Burmantofts Marmo columns and a Dutch gable with ball finials. The interior features an ornate balcony, a decorated barrelvaulted ceiling, and the original
screen framed by golden cherubs. Notably, it retains its 'modesty' gas lights, ensuring the auditorium is never in complete darkness, a feature unique to this establishment.
The recent renovation, led by Page\Park Architects, encompassed comprehensive conservation

"When we started work on the Picture House project in 2015 we had no idea of the challenges ahead and how long our original timeline would have to be extended. Nor did we fully appreciate the support and love so many people across the city and nationally would show for our cinema. As we stand on the cusp of re-opening, we are looking forward to a bright future with this gem of a Picture House restored and more accessible than ever before."

special screenings, and film festivals, catering to a wide audience.
The renovation project presented several challenges, including preserving the historic fabric of the building while integrating modern facilities. Addressing structural issues such as crumbling stone and brickwork, damaged plaster, and water ingress required meticulous planning and execution. The addition of new amenities, like a café, improved foyer spaces, and enhanced accessibility features, was carefully designed to complement the original architecture.
Situated in a vibrant cultural hub, the Hyde Park Picture House serves a diverse community, including local residents and students from nearby universities. The cinema continues
to be a cherished landmark, celebrating its rich history while adapting to contemporary cinematic trends.
"Our design approach had to be as respectful and as sensitive as possible to the original building, whilst trying to solve as many of the accessibility and performance issues the cinema was facing. It was crucial to retain the cosy and welcoming feel the Picture House is famous for. I have been working on the redevelopment project for five years now and it has been a real privilege to be involved. There have been countless challenges thrown at us, but I'm incredibly proud of everything we've been able to achieve. We're delighted to have retained the gas lighting at the cinema, with new and improved safety measures now in place."

CineAsia 2024 descended upon Bangkok from 9 to 12 December, a four-day spectacle of industry insight, technological innovation, and corporate posturing set against the backdrop of the True Icon Hall and Major Cineplex. As the premier convention for the AsiaPacific theatrical industry, it brought together exhibitors, distributors, and studio representatives from across the region, all eager to take the temperature of an industry that is still navigating a delicate balance between tradition and transformation.
A measured optimism permeated the event. Theatrical exhibition in Asia, though not immune to the global shifts in viewing habits, remains a dominant force in the box office hierarchy. Markets such as China and India continue to
wield staggering audience numbers, while countries like South Korea and Japan retain a stronghold on local content that rivals even the most ambitious Hollywood imports.
CineAsia's programming reflected these realities, offering a slate of studio presentations, technology showcases, and discussions on the ever-evolving landscape of cinema distribution.
The 'State of the Industry' address set the tone for the week, a
reflection on the challenges and triumphs of a theatrical model that refuses to go quietly into the night. Global trends, regional market performance, and shifting distribution strategies were dissected with a level of scrutiny befitting an industry that, despite frequent obituaries, remains very much alive.
The address also highlighted the resilience of exhibitors who have adapted to shorter release windows, diversified revenue streams, and an audience that now demands more than just a film - they want an experience.
Hollywood's presence at CineAsia was significant, though measured. Universal, Warner Bros., Paramount, Sony, and Disney all took the stage, offering distributors a first look at their upcoming theatrical slates. These presentations, a mix of high-energy sizzle reels, extended previews, and carefully managed enthusiasm, served their purpose: to convince exhibitors that the upcoming year holds enough blockbusters, awards contenders, and midbudget crowd-pleasers to keep seats filled and concession stands busy.
International cinema was equally well-represented. The rise of locally-produced hits across Asia has been one of the defining industry stories of the past decade, with regional powerhouses increasingly proving that audiences will turn up in force for homegrown content. Panels on marketspecific challenges and strategies for global distribution underscored just how much influence Asia now wields over the industry's direction.
Among the event's key moments was the presentation of the Distributor of the Year award to Soupy (Subha-Orn)
Rathanamongkolmas, Vice President of South Asia for Universal Pictures International. With nearly three decades of industry experience, Rathanamongkolmas has played a pivotal role in shaping Universal's strategy across the region, championing films that have found both commercial and critical success in Asian markets. The recognition was a nod to both her individual contributions and the larger importance of localised distribution strategies in an industry that can no longer afford a one-size-fits-all approach.
Beyond the films, CineAsia remains an essential marketplace for the latest in theatrical technology. This year's trade show floor was a showcase of the industry's most cutting-edge advancements, from next-generation projection and immersive sound to evolving seating concepts and premium large formats. GDC Technology, marking its 25th anniversary, unveiled its latest innovations in enterprise software, demonstrating the kind of forward-thinking solutions necessary to keep exhibitors competitive in an era of digital disruption.
Luxury and immersion were key themes in exhibition trends, with vendors highlighting how premium formats, expanded concession offerings, and experiential add-ons can help cinemas maintain their status as entertainment destinations. The ongoing push for laser projection, AI-assisted operations, and high-frame-rate capabilities underscored an
industry committed to refining the theatrical experience; if not reinventing it outright.
The convention also doubled as a platform for Thailand's ambitions as a global production hub. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) made a strong push to highlight the country's viability as an international filming location, touting incentives such as a proposed cash rebate of up to 30% with no cap. The success of Death Whisperer: Tee Yod 2, a Thai horror hit that grossed over 1 billion baht and secured screenings in more than 30 countries, served as a powerful case study of the region's growing influence in the global film market.
CineAsia 2024 may not have been an event of sweeping revelations, but it provided something arguably more valuable: a reaffirmation of the industry's resilience and adaptability. As exhibitors and distributors left Bangkok, the focus was not on existential anxieties about streaming or shrinking windows, but rather on what comes next - how to meet audiences where they are, how to elevate the cinema-going experience, and how to ensure that, in an increasingly fragmented media landscape, the big screen remains the centrepiece of cinematic culture.
CinemaCon returns to Las Vegas this spring, a triumphant thirteenth outing for the world's largest gathering of cinema exhibitors, distributors, and industry insiders. From 31 March to 3 April 2025, Caesars Palace will once again play host to an event that has, over the years, become a bellwether for the state of theatrical exhibition-a litmus test of both confidence and caution in an industry still finding its equilibrium post-pandemic.
For the first time in years, all major Hollywood studios will be present, a gesture that speaks volumes about their commitment to the big screen. Lionsgate, Paramount, Sony, Universal (alongside Focus Features), Disney, and Warner Bros. will showcase their upcoming theatrical slates, with Amazon MGM Studios making its CinemaCon debut-a notable move for a company that has, at times, seemed more comfortable in the streaming space. The return of these power players signals that, while streaming has irrevocably changed viewing habits, the industry's biggest names still recognise the theatre as the irreplaceable heart of cinema.
The event's centrepiece, as always, is the studio presentations-high-energy showcases that offer theatre owners and press an early look
at the films studios hope will define the coming year. Expect first-look footage, surprise guest appearances, and the usual grand pronouncements about the power of the cinematic experience. For exhibitors, this is a crucial moment: the films previewed here will shape programming decisions and, potentially, the financial fortunes of cinemas worldwide.
Beyond the Hollywood-heavy spectacle, CinemaCon remains a deeply practical gathering, a place where the business of exhibition is taken apart, examined, and reassembled. The world's largest cinema trade show will spotlight the latest innovations in projection, sound, seating, and concessions, with technology firms vying to convince exhibitors that their product is the next essential investment. From immersive audio to laser projection, from luxury recliners to gourmet concessions, this is where the future of the theatrical experience is mapped out.
International exhibitors will once again have a dedicated day of programming on 31 March, a necessary recognition of the fact that cinema is, now more than ever, a global business. Box office fortunes rise and fall on international markets, and as Hollywood leans more heavily on overseas audiences, the industry's future will be written not just in Los Angeles but in Beijing, Mumbai, and beyond. Expect panels and discussions on the challenges

facing non-US exhibitors, from local content quotas to the impact of digital distribution.
Honouring those who have shaped the industry, this year's NATO Marquee Award will go to Sean Gamble, President and CEO of Cinemark, in recognition of his contributions to exhibition. The award, presented during the 'State of the Industry' programme on 1 April, serves as a reminder of the shifting leadership within exhibition, as chains navigate an era of unprecedented transformation.
Caesars Palace, a long-standing CinemaCon venue, provides an appropriate backdrop for an industry known for both spectacle and reinvention. Its conference centre will be a hive of activity, and its Colosseum-a state-of-the-art venue custom-built for theatregrade screenings-will host the major studio presentations. For four days, this stretch of the Las Vegas Strip will become the epicentre of theatrical exhibition, a space where the industry's past, present, and future collide.
For those attending, CinemaCon is more than just a conference; it's an affirmation that, despite everything-the streaming wars, the shortened theatrical windows, the evolving tastes of audiencescinema endures.

Overview
Cinema is in a state of flux. The old certainties - release dates that meant something, star power that guaranteed footfall, the unchallenged primacy of the
theatrical experience-have all been upended. The industry is facing an identity crisis, and nowhere was this more apparent than at Big Cine Expo 2024, where some of the biggest names in Indian film exhibition gathered to debate the
future of their craft. The panel discussion, titled Bridging the Content Supply Chain & Leveraging Alternate Content, was moderated by filmmaker and HITFLIK founder Saurabh Varma. Their collective challenge? Finding new ways to keep cinemas alive in an era of shifting audience expectations and unpredictable content pipelines.
Saurabh opened the discussion with the unavoidable: supply chain issues in theatrical content. The industry is still reeling from postpandemic production delays, strikes, and shifting consumer habits that have left cinema operators struggling to maintain a steady flow of fresh films. Thomas, representing one of India's largest multiplex chains, laid out the stakes: 'If movies alone can't sustain the business, what else can?'
One solution, he argued, lies in alternate content. Live concerts, gaming events, sports broadcasts, and anime screenings have all proven to be crowd-pullers. BTS concert films, for instance, have performed spectacularly, and Japanese anime titles like Suzume and Demon Slayer have attracted audiences that mainstream Indian films sometimes fail to capture. The numbers speak for themselvesalternate content now accounts for 5% of total admissions at PVR INOX, far surpassing the international benchmark of 3%. It is, Thomas suggested, not just a supplement but a necessity.
Jackky, himself a producer and actor, agreed that cinemas must expand beyond their traditional remit. 'The audience doesn't think in binaries anymore,' he said. 'For them, a cinema hall is not just a place to watch films; it's a place to

experience something collective, whether that's a live cricket match or a Taylor Swift concert.' His assessment was pragmatic: 'Theatres need to move with the audience, not the other way around.'
Amit brought another perspective to the discussion: the changing geography of demand. While Bollywood's grip on the Indian market has loosened, South Indian cinema has surged ahead, fuelled by massive productions that don't just cater to local audiences but command attention across the country. The old perception that metro cities dictate content trends is outdated, he argued. 'We screened a Taylor Swift concert film, and the highest number of inquiries came from Sonipat. That tells you something.'
Rajesh expanded on this, making a case for breaking linguistic and cultural silos. South Indian films have already proven their national appeal, but what about international content beyond Hollywood? 'Why are we limiting ourselves to American films?' he asked. 'Why not Russian horror films, Korean thrillers, Spanish heist dramas?' The market, he suggested, is there-but it requires active cultivation rather than passive distribution.
and Actor
A recurring theme was the recent success of re-releases. Films that had once underperformed in their initial runs, such as Rockstar and Tumbbad, have found new life in cinemas. The phenomenon, Jackky observed, was largely fuelled by nostalgia. 'A film like Rockstar didn't just age well-it became deeply personal for an entire generation.'
Amit pointed out that streaming platforms have inadvertently played a role in driving audiences back to cinemas. Many of these films found cult status online, creating fresh demand for big-screen experiences. 'People watched Rockstar on Netflix and then wanted to see it in a cinema. That's something we need to pay attention to.'
Rajesh Mishra, Executive Director & Group CEO, UFO Moviez
Rahul added that re-releases, when marketed properly, have a clear advantage: 'They already have an established fan base. You're not convincing someone to watch something new-you're giving them a chance to relive something they already love.'
If alternative content, international crossovers, and re-releases are the future, the next logical question is: how do cinemas ensure people
show up? Marketing, according to Rahul, is an area where the industry is still stuck in old habits. 'We think about marketing as visibility-putting out posters, dropping trailers-but not enough about conversion. Are we actually using data to target audiences effectively?'
Raghav took this point further, arguing that the cinema industry lags behind others when it comes to leveraging data-driven decisionmaking. 'Every other industry uses precision marketing, but we're still treating it as an afterthought.' He suggested that cinemas should directly engage with audiences based on viewing habits. 'If someone watched Tumbbad on streaming, why not directly market a re-release to them? If a city has a huge anime fan base, why not create experiences around that?' The tools exist-it's the mindset that needs to change.
Ultimately, the panel agreed that the future of cinemas lies in adaptability. Theatres can no longer afford to be just screening venues; they must be reimagined as cultural

hubs where different forms of entertainment coexist. Thomas put it succinctly: 'We're not just selling tickets. We're selling experiences.'
Whether through curated festivals, international film seasons, event screenings, or immersive live experiences, cinema owners must rethink their spaces. As Rahul pointed out, 'It's not about bringing audiences back-it's about making them want to stay.'
Cinema, then, is not dead. But it is changing. The panel made one thing clear: those who adapt will thrive, and those who don't risk becoming relics of an industry that once was.

Overview
The age-old ritual of overpriced popcorn and fizzy drinks at the movies is ripe for reinvention. With audiences demanding more for their money and streaming services offering convenience at home, cinemas must rethink how they approach food and beverage (F&B) pricing. The panel at this year's conference tackled the challenge head-on, dissecting strategies to lure audiences back with compelling offerings, dynamic pricing models,
and a reimagining of the cinema dining experience. The conversation, led by Akkshay, brought together some of the biggest names in the industry, each with a distinct perspective on what the future holds.
Cinema F&B pricing has long followed a rigid, high-margin formula, but as Bhuvnesh pointed out, "Customers today want valuethey compare our prices with what
they get outside." Devang agreed, adding that the traditional pricing structure is being disrupted by shifting consumer expectations. While multiplexes historically relied on concessions as a key revenue stream, audiences are increasingly unwilling to pay a premium for standard offerings.
Sanjay noted that one approach is tiered pricing, where premium and economy options coexist. "You've got to have something for everyone. Not everyone wants a gourmet meal at the movies, but for those who do, we need to be ready." This shift towards flexibility could encourage
Akkshay Rathie, Director, Aashirwad Theatres
more people to indulge, rather than avoiding the counter altogether.
Bhuvnesh also stressed that pricing cannot exist in isolation from customer psychology. "It's about perceived value; people are willing to pay more if they feel they're getting a premium experience." Whether that means larger portion sizes, combo deals, or exclusive items, the goal is to ensure audiences feel satisfied with what they're paying for.
Loyalty schemes are becoming a major factor in F&B pricing. Satwik highlighted the need for cinemas to leverage customer data, stating, "If we know what our audience prefers, we can tailor offers to them."
Bhuvnesh expanded on this, explaining how digital platforms allow for personalised promotions, ensuring repeat customers feel valued. Many major chains have begun integrating app-based rewards, allowing customers to collect points or gain access to special discounts, reinforcing the idea that frequent patrons should be recognised.
Pattabhi Rama Rao suggested taking cues from airlines and hotels, where pricing fluctuates based on demand. "Why should popcorn cost the same
Devang Sampat, Managing Director, Cinépolis India
on a Monday afternoon as it does on a Friday night?" he asked. The idea of dynamic pricing, where F&B costs adjust in real-time, intrigued the panel, though implementation remains a challenge. Devang noted that while the logistics of such a system could be complex, it offers an opportunity to balance affordability with profitability, attracting budget-conscious viewers during off-peak hours while maximising revenue on high-traffic days.
Beyond pricing, the discussion turned to the quality of offerings. Devang noted that consumers today have higher expectations: "It's not just about popcorn and soda anymore. People want variety, healthier options, and even meal combos." This demand has led some cinemas to experiment with artisanal food choices, ranging from gourmet burgers to sushi platters, catering to evolving tastes.
Sanjay emphasised the importance of presentation and branding, saying that the look and feel of the food contribute to the overall experience. "You're not just selling food - you're selling an experience," he explained, highlighting the importance of aesthetics in an era dominated by social media. A well-
packaged meal that looks 'Instagrammable' can serve as free marketing, encouraging customers to share their experiences online. Bhuvnesh pointed to the success of international cinema chains incorporating full-service dining. "In some markets, people are coming to the movies for the food as much as the film," he said, stressing the need for innovation. Some theatres now offer waiter service inside premium auditoriums, allowing guests to order gourmet meals from their seats, transforming the traditional 'dinner and a movie' night into a seamless, all-in-one experience.
One of the more contentious points was the restriction on bringing outside food into cinemas. While multiplexes have long defended this policy as essential to sustaining their business model, recent legal challenges have forced a rethink. Satwik argued that cinemas must respond with better in-house options rather than relying on exclusivity. "You can't just tell people they have no choice but to buy from you. That doesn't work anymore," he said, advocating for stronger incentives to keep purchases in-house rather than enforcing strict rules.

Devang added that some cinemas are testing relaxed policies, allowing certain external items while still encouraging in-house purchases. "The key is to create an experience so compelling that people want to buy from us, not because they have to." Some cinemas have started allowing outside food on certain days or offering discounts on concession items when customers buy tickets in advance, blending flexibility with financial strategy.
The conversation made one thing clear: the future of cinema F&B is anything but static. With evolving consumer habits and mounting competition from home entertainment, cinemas must innovate to remain relevant.
Whether through flexible pricing, elevated dining experiences, or loyalty-driven incentives, the industry must adapt or risk losing its audience.
Akkshay wrapped up the discussion with a thought-provoking question: "If you had to change one thing about cinema F&B tomorrow, what would it be?" The responses ranged from simplifying the ordering process to offering seasonal menu rotations, but the sentiment was unanimous-change is necessary, and the time to act is now. With the right mix of creativity, adaptability, and audience engagement, the industry can redefine the moviegoing experience, ensuring that the joy of watching films on the big screen remains as enticing as ever.
