The global cinema business is growing in a big way,
Issue # 74 June-August 2016
if the sessions at CinemaCon 2016, held at Las Vegas, are anything to go by. Several sequels were announced and many more are in the pipeline for release. However, at the technology front, not much seems to have changed in cinema exhibition compared to last year. Exhibitors are still perplexed about making investments in the ‘choices’ being imposed on them by varied brands. The motivation for immersive sound and laser projection is growing in the community though. The world’s most popular Torrenting sites have been banned in the UK after a high court order that forced internet service providers to prevent customers from accessing them. More than 80 websites have now been blocked in the UK, according to a TorrentFreak report. The ban applies to six biggest broadband providers: BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Virgin Media, O2 and EE. The world cinema exhibitors should push for similar bans in their countries to put an end to the big P — Piracy.

Talking of cinema exhibition business world over, China is leading the league with 31,000 screens, contributing largely to global box office revenues. The recently-released film Mermaid broke numerous box office records, including the biggest opening day and the biggest single day gross and the biggest opening week of all time in China. It also became the highest-grossing Chinese film of all time. This goes on to show that with increase in number of screens, the box office performance gets better. There’s excitement in the air as TheatreWorld’s very own show ‘Big Cine Expo’, to be held at Chennai, India, (23-24 August 2016), is coming soon. It’s going to be Asia’s biggest expo for cinema exhibition community. Kamal Haasan, a celebrated film actor, director-producer, screenwriter (with several distinctions to his credit) and Subhash Ghai, one of India’s noted film directors and producers, are expected to inaugurate the expo. Their gracious presence will add a distinct charm to the event. At CineEurope, Barcelona, Spain (20-23 June 2016), the most successful European convention and trade show, TheatreWorld is once again the media partner. See you all soon! Do not forget to pick TheatreWorld magazine copy at the shows!!! Raghavendra T Editor-Publisher

Since its rollout in 2014, Christie's RGB laser projection system is the preferred choice for a premium 3D cinema experience in a number of cinema chains around the world. In Asia, theatres equipped with Christie laser projection technology include Tongzhou Wanda Cinema in Beijing, the iconic Shanghai Film Art Center, and SM Seaside City in Cebu, the Philippines. Severtson Announces New Microperf Options Severtson Screens, a global leader in innovative and quality projection screens for the cinema, commercial, pro AV, and home theatre markets, has announced that new microperf options are now available for its folded SeVision 3D GX line of cinema projection screens. The line will be featured during CineEurope 2016, held in Barcelona, Spain from June
20-23 at Centre Convencions Internacional Barcelona (CCIB), booth # 216. "Our new folded shipping method now makes international distribution of our industry-acclaimed SeVision 3D GX highly affordable, reducing international shipping costs by up to 70 per cent," explained Toby Severtson, president and CEO of Severtson Corp. "Besides standard perforated white and sliver screens, we now also offer the immensely popular microperf option to the folded SeVision 3D GX line of cinema projection screens for international shipment. Since its recent launch, we've had to renovate our facility and upgrade our machinery to keep up with worldwide demand." According to Severtson, microperf offers multiple benefits versus standard perforation screens, such as seven per cent open space against the traditional 4.5 per cent open space. He added that microperf is also the perfect solution for 4k, 8k, 12k and even higher projection resolutions as these technologies becomes available in the future. "Microperf is becoming the industry standard and is what has put the 'folded' line over the top," added Dan Maxwell, Severtson Corp. V.P. & Chief Operating Officer. "This option is now the screen of choice for highend, premier theatres and cinema chains. The Severtson microperf viewing surface practically eliminates moirĂŠ which is often problematic of screens with larger perforation, yet continues to provide a more realistic soundstage allowing speakers to be placed directly behind the screen." Severtson explained that they have been shipping these screens both domestically and internationally to very pleased customers who, up until recently, could not afford them because of the enormous international shipping fees. Additionally, now there is a solution for complex installations where a long tube housing the cinema screen is impractical or not feasible to transport through the building.
"Our folded screen technology has proven again and again to drastically reduce international shipping costs and makes these screens available to every customer worldwide," Severtson continued. "And to top that off, our new cinema screen price estimator enables our dealers with even quicker cinema screen price quotes and delivery estimates of both our folded and non-folded options." The new cinema screen price estimator is now live and available for Severtson's dealer base via its website as well as a mobile app for Apple iOS and Android Smartphones. Once the dealer is registered with an account and granted access at www.severtsonscreens.com/register, the tool provides product and packaging price estimates for Severtson cinema screens as soon as a dealer inputs the necessary required information, such as screen dimensions, coating, material, and desired packaging. The packaging portion of the price estimate is then calculated based on the selected product's weight and container dimensions, which the tool also provides. For each estimate requested, dealers will receive an automated email and PDF file detailing the screen price and packaging estimate. Prices are only estimates and do not include shipping charges or any other potential international fees. Shipping costs associated with such large packages as these were out-ofreach for so many customers up until recently. Now, Severtson Screens' SeVision 3D GX screens can be folded and packed into a much smaller crate without any loss in structural integrity or performance abilities. "Severtson's new folded screen process not only reduces international shipping fees, the smaller packaging simplifies delivery to theatres and is more convenient for installers as folded screens are much easier to get into buildings and uncrate than standard long-tube roll packaging... especially when a

theatre is in a unique structure, such as a high-rise or multi-story theatre complex," added Maxwell. The new folded line of SeVision 3D GX and Ultra Wide cinema screens are now available for delivery to international destinations, having numerous advantages, including: •
Available in standard or micro perforation (white and silver)
•
Coated surface that is harder to bruise and scuff
•
Small micron flake coating produces a sharper image, eliminating graininess in bright scenes
•
Viewing angles range from 30 to 40 degree half-gain depending on the specific screen gain requested
•
Water-based coating promotes longevity by maintaining optical properties over time, eliminating flaking and cracking of the screen surface
•
Perfect for large cinema applications (movie houses, museums, universities, etc.)
Philips Launches LongPlay Digital Cinema Xenon Philips announced the launch of its new LongPlay digital cinema xenon lamp product line, offering up to 50% longer warranty hours than standard xenon lamps for dramatically lower cost of ownership. electrode life and maintaining light output longer. In addition to longer life, all Philips LongPlay lamps feature an extended operating power range down to 50% of full power. This provides exhibitors with more operational flexibility and avoids the additional expense and hassle of changing lamps when switching between 2D and 3D projector configurations. Radix and the MPAA Establish New Partnership to Reduce Online Piracy Domain name registry operator Radix and the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) jointly announced an agreement to help ensure that websites using domains operated by Radix are not engaged in large scale commercial piracy. Under the terms of the agreement, the MPAA will be treated as a "Trusted Notifier" for the purpose of referring large-scale pirate websites that are registered in domain extensions operated by Radix. The agreement, which is similar to one announced in February with the domain name operator Donuts, imposes strict standards for such referrals, including that they be accompanied by evidence of clear and pervasive copyright infringement, and a representation that the MPAA has first attempted to contact the registrar and hosting provider for resolution. The agreement is the first of its kind with an operator based outside the United States. It specifies that Radix will work with registry partners to contact the website operator and seek additional evidence. If Radix or its registry partners determine that the website is engaged in illegal activity and
thereby violates Radix's Acceptable Use and Anti-Abuse Policy, then they, in their discretion, may act within their already established authority to put the infringing site on hold or suspend it. Overall, this program is a voluntary best practice designed to help promote a healthier internet by mitigating blatantly illegal online activity. "Our aim is to evolve our domain extensions to a point where internet users feel a greater sense of security when they see a URL that ends with them. We welcome MPAA's cooperation in helping us prevent intellectual property and copyright violations in our name space. We're hopeful that our joint actions will not only protect creators from having their works stolen, but also protect internet users from exposure to malware that is commonly found on sites run by unlicensed operators," said Sandeep Ramchandani, Business Head of Radix.

First in Singapore: Auro 11.1 Golden Village Multiplex announced that it is the first cinema operator in Singapore to support the revolutionary 3D immersive sound technology, Auro 11.1 by Barco. Auro 11.1 brings sound from all around and above to create the most impactful experience. Golden Village Suntec City is the first cinema in Singapore to deploy Auro 11.1 with the debut of Jack Neo's latest Chinese New Year comedy/ drama, "Long, Long Time Ago", which was natively mixed in the new immersive technology at Galaxy Studios Belgium. Says Mr Sebastian Fong, Manager, Projection Management, Golden Village Multiplex, "Visualisation has grown tremendously in recent years. On the other hand, the evolution of audio technology has been at a gradual
pace. This makes Auro 11.1 by Barco a monumental evolution in the history of cinema audio technology. We understand that 50% of the movie experience relies on pitchperfect audio, which makes it most gratifying for us to be the first cinema operator to launch Auro 11.1 in Singapore" Auro 11.1 is touted as the most realistic 3D sound experience currently available in the market. Unlike other technologies where speakers are placed only on a horizontal plane and directly above, the Auro 11.1 by Barco's system uses a sound reproduction speaker layout based on three axes (x=width, y=depth, z=height) and three vertical layers (surround, height, top), which provides the most natural true-to-life reproduction of sound. Thanks to its unique mezzanine layer located between the standard surround and overhead speakers, Auro 11.1 by Barco provides a much better spread of sound in the vertical axis which delivers a natural representation of 3D sound all around the listener using fewer channels than other immersive sound systems. The benefits of using Auro 11.1 have encouraged Hollywood producers and others from around the world to release more than 125 films that leveraged on the new technology. Jeffrey Katzenberg, the CEO of DreamWorks Animation, has praised Auro 11.1 for offering the best cinematic experience to movie patrons. DreamWorks Animation's latest film, Kung Fu Panda 3, is currently playing in theatres in Auro 11.1 by Barco. Says Mr Eddie Tan, General Manager, South East Asia Entertainment for Barco: "Auro 11.1 by Barco is the apex of cinema audio. Every boom, swoop and whisper will be fully experienced, making your movie experience the ultimate adventure. Auro 11.1 gives film fans the biggest reason to watch movies within the theatres and not in the confines of their homes. We thank Golden Village for this partnership and for launching Auro 11.1 in Singapore."

The group has a strong brand presence in Germany, Austria and Portugal. The group believes in driving up customer frequency through increased marketing and data insight, expanding content offer, estate improvements, and working closely with partners across the global industry. In February 2014, Paul Donovan was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group. In an exclusive interview to TheatreWorld, Paul Donovan shares his vast experiences and the company's vision. Here are some excerpts from the interview: From fast moving consumer goods to technology to cinema exhibition, how did these transitions happen in your career, especially considering each industry is so different from the other? I have always been a curious person interested in new products, new technologies new industries and new places. I am very fortunate that I have been able to experience so much in my career. I have always been really interested in what drives customer demand and customer satisfaction, and what skills are necessary to thrive in a particular company, so it's really not been so difficult to move between sectors. In the context of cinema, I think coming from outside the industry has been a specific advantage. I remember doing the keynote speech at CineEurope in 2014 - challenging the established thinking (at that

The first thing to say is that I have enormous respect for many of my fellow exhibitors and their management teams. As I travel the world, I am always curious to see what innovations are in train - and there are many. It's very important to recognize that cinema-going culture and habits vary significantly by country and even by region within a country. So to be competitive you need to be very close to what your
• SPECIAL STORY • guests really want from their experience. We are believers in segmentation and strategic marketing to determine needs and to shape our programmes, and to use that insight to provide a first-class cinema experience. We can all buy the same seats and the same projectors, so we pay very special attention to our people - making sure we hire and reward those people who deliver a great guest experience. We measure what we call Net Promoter Score every day in every cinema - and I'm not sure many others do that. How many cinemas does ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group operate world over? How many of them are multiplexes? We operate 242 cinemas, the vast majority of which are multiplexes, serving over 90 million guests a year. Our cinemas are located to be really close to the customer - 120 million people live within 20 minutes of one of our sites. Recently, we announced a further 20 sites to be added to our estate, including landmark sites in London, Berlin and Milan which will include the extension of the phenomenally successful in-cinema dining concept "The Lounge" which we have run in London for a number of years now. Tell us more about the business strategies that have propelled the growth of ODEON It's easy to develop a strategy - you can find plenty of consultants who will develop one for you - but the key is in how you execute it. Our transformation is based on operating the business internationally. We have one core strategy which is then tailored and optimized for local market and competitive conditions. We have a small number of experts who work closely with our operating businesses to share best practice and to pilot concepts which we then roll out across the portfolio.
oriented business, embracing data and analytics to drive guest frequency. The second is about maximising the opportunities in Retail to drive revenues by selling more products to more people most of the time. The third is about Operational Transformation, which is about being more efficient, but also reshaping everything we do around delivering a better guest experience. And the final element is all about developing a High Performance Culture - one where we focus on alignment and communication across the organization. If everyone knows what they are supposed to do to support the strategy it makes execution and change so much easier - and a more satisfying place to work. We believe that if 100% of our people can have a positive influence on the guest experience we will be
doing the right thing for most of the time. All of this is underpinned by a commitment to make the business even more digital than it is today, enabling us to build better relationships with our guest through all our channels. What are the recent innovations at ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group? There are many! One recent innovation in the UK was the decision to remove booking fees from online sales. We asked ourselves: "Why, when we want customers to buy in advance, would we actually charge customers more for saving us money?" We found that up to 30% of customers booking online would drop out of their web purchase when they came up against the booking fee. So we did what any customer focussed business would do
There are four pillars to what we do. The first is Commercial Excellence, which is all about becoming a truly customer focused and marketingJune-August 2016

• SPECIAL STORY • - we took it away. The result? A dramatic increase in online sales. When Star Wars opened in the UK last December, we already had over 750,000 tickets sold. Any expansion plans in other parts of the world? We're focussed on delivering our strategy and transformation in our existing sites - as well as opening more than 20 fantastic new sites in the next 4 years across our businesses in Europe. Tell us more about your latest ventures? It's no secret that there's a strong pioneering and innovative spirit in our teams at the moment as we look for new services, ideas and technologies that will help us give guests a fantastic experience. We've even opened two Innovation Labs, in London and Barcelona, so we can work with the best innovators and creatives in Europe. But that's all I'm going to say - by their nature these things have to remain confidential while we're working on them! F&B seems to be one of the major attractions of ODEON (especially popcorn and drinks). How important, in your opinion, is F&B to cinema experience. Has its importance changed over a period of time? Being one of the oldest cinemas in Europe, you may be able to give us a better perspective. We know that guests see food and beverage as an integral part of the
cinema experience, always have and always will. The key developments we are seeing is a broadening of the ranges we sell - frozen yogurt as well as ice cream, gourmet hot dogs with value added toppings, more upmarket wines, specialist pizzas and gourmet popcorn. Customers are not always asking for bigger sizes, but better quality in what they buy. I think it's fair to say that there is opportunity for growth in F&B - we and other exhibitors are not yet world class food retailers - but I am inspired by the degree of experimentation I see in the sector. We pioneered The Lounge concept in London - bringing luxury in-cinema dining to the market. We recently announced the expansion to three more sites - in London, Berlin and Milan over the next couple of years. In addition, we are continuing to expand our Costa Coffee outlets - now more than 50 - as a proven vehicle to drive increased spend per head. How would you sum up the secret of ODEON's success?
The secret of our success? That's a tough question, but I would say that we have developed and tested a successful strategy with people at its heart - guests and colleagues - and we are driving it hard. The growth in our core KPI's supports this view. How would you compare the cinema exhibition industry in the UK and the rest of Europe? There are marked differences between the UK and the rest of Europe on two fronts. The first is that the UK is by some way the most concentrated market, with roughly three quarters of the box office shared by ODEON, Vue and Cineworld. This means that there is a lot of innovation going on. The second difference is in capital deployment. There are more new sites being built and more being refurbished in the UK than other mature markets such as Germany or Italy. This market is still underscreened - so the result should be a growth in overall attendance. How is the cinema experience at ODEON different from other cinemas? We think we offer the warmest welcome and the best hospitality and the best test of that is to come and experience it for yourself! What is the group's vision for 2016? Our vision is "To provide inspiring entertainment experiences for every guest". If we hold true to that in all we do, our business will have a bright future in what is a highly competitive market.

Mike Cummings, Principal, TK Architects Yongseok Jang, EVP, Head of Strategy Planning Division, CGV George Sautter, SVP, Corporate Development & Strategy, Cineplex Entertainment Corinne Thibaut, Int'l Director, Cinema & Leisure, Coca-Cola Overview: There was a time when going to a movie was all about picking out your favourite film, heading to the theatre and back home once the lights go on. Not any longer. Goodbye multiplex and hello "cultureplex" - a destination resort for entertainment - a crossroads of culture right in your own community. From concept to creation, multiplexes are being phased out for modern, exciting, and experiential destinations and the industry is adapting with great success to the changing demands and needs of the average moviegoer. Discussion: Yongseok began by asserting the brand image of CGV, the largest multiplex cinema chain in South Korea, as a cultureplex. He defined cultureplex a great venue for movie lovers, who want to have entertainment space for musical, operas, live performances, playing
documentaries… rather than just watch movies. While Mike shared his memorable experiences of movies, George talked about creating spaces and hubs for people to meet and celebrate the community culture, sighting Starbucks example. He also pointed out the need to give visitors compelling reasons to come early and stay later by integrating other exciting activities into movie-going experiences such as video gaming. In the recent past, Cineplex and World Gaming brought pro video games to the big screen. 270-degree ScreenX technology, showing ultra-wide movies on three walls, was an important point of reference by Yongseok. Corinne emphasised that the benchmark for today's exhibitors is not the competing cinema next door but experience of leisure park, hotels and music festivals. Her research on market trends reveals 50% of the people in the population in Europe has not been to cinema; in US, it is 32%. According to her, unlocking this growth potential is possible by motivating visitors to come to cinemas. Takeaway: The way people consume technology may have changed but some key things haven't! People want to gather for social and cultural reasons. Creating a space that feels like a part of people's life and packaging leisure activities is the way ahead.

Exhibition and Distribution: Collaborating & Partnering for the Greater Cause Moderator: Ian Shepherd, Chief Commercial Officer, Odeon & UCI Holdings Panel Members: Niels Swinkels, EVP, International Distribution, Universal Pictures International Cameron Mitchell, CEO, VOX Cinemas Paul Higginson, EVP, Twentieth Century Fox EMEA Bernardo Rugama, Commercial Vice President, Cinepolis Amber Stepper, VP, Global Marketing, National Amusements Overview: With the rise of social media, mobile, instantaneous connections and "cord-cutting", no longer is the release of a film a oneway street. The cinema world has commanded and demanded more joint and collaborative efforts between exhibition and distribution. Both sides are answering the bell with excitement and enthusiasm and the results are telling.
about the movie first and foremost. That's what generates the interest. But then it's also about differentiating how to see that movie from any other activity." Amber points out that not everything can be customised for every exhibitor, but to the extent that can be done, it gives the exhibitor something really powerful to go to market with and invest in that elevates both the exhibitor's brand and the movie itself. Cameron states, "it's a two way street. Exhibitors realise that. Our relationship with distributors is the more we get the more we give. An example, with "X-Men", Fox gave us some amazing footage and that went on every one of our screens in all countries for six or eight weeks before the last X-Men film launched. It had a demonstrable difference on our marketshare and I think the performance of the film." Bernardo explained how they found a
common goal with Diamond Films, a distributor in Latin America -- to promote a new Mexican film that nobody knew aboutand wasn't a blockbuster -- Qué Culpa Tiene El Niño. "We reached 14 million people in only 14 days and it was huge. We committed to doing a plan together and we decided there would be only one source for the trailer; our Facebook page. It was only going to be through our Facebook channel. It is a very powerful one," he said. Takeaway: Dedicating time and energy to the collaboration so the improvements will be mutually beneficial is the way ahead. A strategic and open-minded approach and less opportunistic and reactive attitude is the name of the game, especially when it comes to understanding the consumer. Understanding what's working from a communication standpoint is equally important!
Discussion: The discussion provided a perspective of what it's like to manufacture, market and sell new products in the space.Paul points out the need to look at consumers' individual needs. "Why do we build generic cinemas and hope that everyone enjoys a movie in one of our cinemas. We have to be really specific and really targeted," he said. Niels nails it down when he says, "It's

Starlight by Cinema Park
An Architectural Splendour
Cinema Park's second 4DX superscreen, Starlight in Filion Mall, Bagrationovskaya Moscow is one of the most technically advanced multiplexes in Russia. Designed by the esteemed architect Saura Sermenghi, the cinema creates an evocative connection with well-known sci-fi movies of Hollywood.
"Architecture should speak of its time and place, but yearn for timelessness." – Frank Owen Gehry, Canadian-born American architect Cinema Park's second 4DX superscreen, Starlight in Filion mall, Bagrationovskaya Moscow embodies Gehry's yearning for timelessness. One of the most technically advanced multiplexes in Russia with the stateof-art 4DX technology, Starlight transcends space and time by virtue of its incredible architectural splendour. in Starnberg and membership of the Chamber of Architects Planners, Landscapers and Conservationists in Bologna, Saura has designed the cinema that symbolically represents the transition of the movie industry into the digital epoch, which served as a technical basis for the subsequent change of the cinematic art.
Set up in late May 2009, on the third floor of a new international shopping and entertainment center Filion, Starlight is located at a very convenient location. With a parking space for 1,500 cars, it is situated in proximity to Kutuzovsky Avenue and the Third Ring Road. (The cinema is just three minutes walk from the metro). Cinema Park meets moviegoers' dreams in a futuristic design, with two premium cinema halls and eight 3D cinema halls, equipped with all the technological innovations in the field of cinema. Architect Saura Sermenghi is the woman behind the awe-inspiring interiors of the cinema. With her vast experience of working in the Office of Urban Planning of Bernhard Winkler
Indeed, the design of this Starlight makes it one of best multiplexes in Russia. "The site chosen for the construction of the multiplex was inside a huge three-floor shopping centre, surrounded by a big multilevel car parking and located close to a subway station, which is very typical for any multiplex in Russia. This cinema in Moscow was expected to be the greatest in terms of exterior

Filion shopping centre is located in a Moscow district, which is known for its great infrastructure and is close to a permanent exhibition. The mall is frequented mostly by the younger generation. Hence, the purpose of the movie theatre was to attract these young customers. Saura was clear that focus is on "innovative technology" and to find a way to symbolically represent the transition of the movie industry into the digital world. To represent this symbolically, her design concept draws inspiration from sci-fi cinema. 2001 - A Space Oddity by Stanley Kubrick, Solaris by Andrei Tarkovsky, the remake of Solaris by George Clooney, Star Wars by George Lucas, Matrix by Wachowski Brothers are the "design inspirations". Objects, spaces and decor were designed to create an evocative relationship with well-known sci-fi movies so the visitors are drawn into the elements of its ambience. The foyer of the multiplex is conceived to resemble a spaceship and, therefore, the windows on the walls open up to your imagination of "stellar galaxies". The horizontal distribution of the multiplex consists of a long corridor connecting the "different modules of an ideal Space Shuttle". There are also rooms used for "eating something", "waiting", "stunning" or for "chilling-out" and everything is inspired by sci-fi movies. "To sum up, the multiplex is designed with the purpose to underline the scifi theme that would develop as if there were a story with further emotional impact. As we finished the project we went into the construction site inside the shopping mall, and we realized that, in the midst of all those colourful, bright, inviting and evocative advertising signs of the stores positioned under and next to our movie theatre, the main entrance of the multiplex, even performed in the form of 40 mt spacecraft, would be lost in the eyes of our potential June-August 2016

Michael's Green Paper Michael Karagosian speaks about the motion picture industry's transition to digital cinema, the most significant transition in motion pictures since the introduction of sound. In this issue, he speaks on speckle measurement and how DCI can change..
The Dilemma of Speckle Measurement In December of 2015, the Laser Illuminated Projector Association (LIPA) released its Recommended Practice for the Measurement of Speckle. The good news is that there's an agreed method for measuring speckle from laser illuminated projectors. The bad news is that there's no longer an excuse for not publishing a number. Or is there? In September last year, a study published in Nature.com by researchers at Brussels-based Vrije Universiteit Brussel in September 2015 reveals a lot about selecting a performance figure for speckle. Scientists are well aware that speckle is caused by laser light. Speckle from a laser-illuminated projector appears as a granular pattern of spots on the image, caused by the interference of coherent laser light on a not-sooptically-flat projection screen. The Vrije Universiteit Brussel researchers point to several studies concerning the threshold of perception of speckle in still images, but little effort made to study in motion images. Their study, performed with a prototype cinema laser projector in a cinema environment, may be the first of its kind. The researchers projected six movie trailers and a full-length movie under various test conditions designed to increase or decrease speckle contrast. (An increase in contrast would make speckle behavior more visible.) 186 subjects participated in the study. The projector was a prototype 4K-laser illuminated projector. It wasn't
TW-46
June-August 2016
stated, but it would seem fair to assume the prototype projector was intended for the cinema market. Overall, the results point to a strong variation of speckle perception dependent on the content. Two different trailers, shown with identical projector configurations, were perceived to be different in speckle by a factor of 4. An even larger variation, 15x over the best performing trailer, was observed with another two trailers. While a polarizer was used to increase speckle contrast with the high speckle trailers, the researchers report that the measured increase in speckle contrast did not account for the increased perception of speckle. Further, in a blind test conducted with a full-length movie, there was little correlation between perception of speckle and the use of a polarized filter. This removes the polarizer as the cause of the huge increase in speckle perception, and again points to the dependence of perception on content. The researchers suggest that a reasonable level of speckle for a laser illuminator would be that of a xenon lamp. But they also point out that the perception of speckle with a xenon lamp was about half that of the best performing trailer using the prototype 4K laser projector. Considering the worst performing trailer, speckle would need to be reduced by a factor of 30 to achieve that xenon levels. Such improvement may not be realistic. Projector
manufacturers will not be keen to advertise numbers that can be unfavorably compared to xenon illuminators. Until further improvements are achieved, LIPA's speckle measurement method may be left to sit on the shelf awhile. A few interesting observations were made. Speckle is more apparent when observed from the front of the auditorium than the back. But observers in the middle of the auditorium, generally preferred by audiences, found speckle to be only slightly less annoying than those in the front. No significant correlation of perception was found with regards to age or gender. Unlike wine, it won't get better with age. Quoting the report, the style of imagery that appeared to trigger the highest perception was "large grey areas (e.g. from a wall or a cloudy sky) with a rather uniform intensity distribution and that change slowly in time". If measurements encourage unfavorable comparisons with xenon-illuminated projectors, it's unlikely that we'll see LIPA's numbers in product specifications. The surprising news from this study is that speckle perception is wildly dependent on photography. This could lead to all sorts of guidelines. One can see it now: the yellow-band trailer appears before the movie stating "WARNING - The Following Movie May Have Disturbing Levels of Speckle" Oh dear.
• TECHNOLOGY • It's Time to Change DCI Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) was formed in 2002 by Hollywood studios to plan for the replacement of film projectors with digital projectors. It's mission was a success. The output of that period was the DCI specification, which continues to be maintained behind closed doors by Hollywood studios. But outside of that, everything else has changed. The DCI spec continues to serve the industry well. But it's time to broaden its maintenance and management and take it out beyond the closed doors of Hollywood. Market power is changing. When the DCI specification was first introduced in 2005, the top-grossing movies in the world all came from Hollywood. European box office was on par with the US, and China had yet to reach the billion dollar mark in box office. Today, China box office is on track to match or exceed the US. In addition, Hollywood is not responsible for generating 65% of that box office. At CinemaCon, Fox's Tomas Jegeus, President of International Productions, underscored this fact. There's more going on under the hood, too. While Screening Room may have dominated the hate list at CinemaCon this year, the one aspect of its proposal that didn't seem to faze was day-and-date delivery of movies to a $150 Internet-connected "secure" box in the living room. One cannot possibly sell a DCI-compliant box for $150, which makes it the elephant in the room. Some studios expressed concern for piracy through video recording off screen. But no one seemed to mind the box. It was a reminder that Universal did indeed put profit over security with its "Fast and Furious 7" release on e-cinema systems in India last year. The picture being painted is that the foundation that supported DCI compliance testing during the digital rollout is changing. Market power is beginning to shift away from Hollywood. Hollywood's intense focus on security during the digital
cinema rollout may be changing. In addition, there is rumor that international attitudes towards DCI compliance are also changing, with talk of establishing other DCI-like agencies. All of which signals that its time to make some changes before it's too late. Below are some suggestions. First on the list is that management of the DCI specification should be handed to an independent entity. There is no longer a reason for its management and maintenance to be limited to only Hollywood studios. The limitation made sense when the studios were committing to billions of dollars of subsidies in the form of virtual print fees (VPFs). But those days are gone. Second, place the responsibility for equipment compliance into the hands of the manufacturers. This may appear to be a radical idea, but in fact, it's simply recognition of how compliance really works. Compliance testing is a rite of passage that tells content owners that the manufacturer can be trusted. Accordingly, then perhaps its time to also trust the manufacturer to selftest. In fact, manufacturers already selftest their products. In digital cinema, compliance testing is based on a test suite developed and licensed from Cinecert, the same entity that wrote the DCI Compliance Test Plan. Manufacturers license the test suite for self testing, so it can evaluate its work in-progress. Test results can be filed with the specification body, as a statement that tests were run and were successfully passed The only reason to bring a test lab into play is if there's question over the validity of a product's compliance. The goal of self-testing is to speed up the product development cycle and reduce costs. Presumably, manufacturers would also be part of the specification body, providing an opportunity for feedback.
The idea of self-testing is not new. It's a technique long employed by The Open Group to manage compliance to a specification. After signing an agreement, manufacturers associate a compliance mark specific to the compliance specification with its product. If the product is found to be non-compliant, through a 3rd party or customer test, then the manufacturer will be in violation of its agreement, leveraging pressure to fix the problem. It might surprise readers that UNIX compliance is so managed by The Open Group. With around 141,000 screens now digital around the world (quoting David Hancock of IHS Technology at CinemaCon), a mechanism for international management and maintenance of the specification is needed if it is to continue to thrive. Opening up the management of the DCI specification is the first step and the right idea for taking the spec into the future.

With 17 years of enriching experience in the culture of cinema exhibition, TheatreWorld magazine now brings its very own expo for the exhibition community - BigCineExpo! Big Cine Expo 2016 (www.bigcineexpo.com) is an interactive and value-added platform for Theatre Owners, Design Consultants, Equipment Manufacturers, System Integrators, Project Management Professionals, Industry Stakeholders and the user community of Single-Screen, Multiplex cinema and Mall entertainment in Asia and India. "Whenever I travel across India and speak to exhibitors, everybody is asking for an expo for the cinema exhibition industry. Major Indian exhibitors have good technical knowledge and budget, but they cannot afford to travel outside the country exploring new products. Apart from 2-3 chains in India, it is very rare they go to expos outside India and they are dependant on the local dealers" says Raghav, editor/ publisher of TheatreWorld magazine and organizer of Big Cine Expo. "Despite being the second largest producer of films in terms of size, India do not have any expo for the cinema exhibition eco-system. Most of our bigger chains afford going to expos happening outside India, but not the smaller chains. In last 3 years, almost 2000 screens got closed in India due to lower business and lower foot falls. This happened due to lack of business, technology, marketing and operational knowledge with the exhibitors" adds Raghav.
