The world’s biggest election battle is finally over. Donald Trump emerged as the most talked about global personality ever. Never before had US Presidential election been a matter of such international interest! Now all hopes are pinned on world’s GDP growth. After Laser projections, immersive sound and 4D seating, the next level of entertainment is Virtual Reality (VR). At least that’s what the tech gurus are saying. What remains to be seen is the extent of growth and level of maturity VR can achieve. For now, IMAX is all set to open its first virtual reality in the US and Europe and is investing $50 million in Premium VR Content. World’s leading digital cinema solutions provider GDC Technology will also be showcasing its first VR technology at CineAsia and we are waiting for the moment. This quarter, the big news for the companies is about the leading cinema speaker manufacturer QSC Audio acquiring Ultra-Stereo Labs (USL) and Samsung acquiring Harman International. India is going through a major transformation with demonetization to curb corruption and black money. Exhibitors are facing drop in footfalls due to cash crunch. India is hoping the initiative reaps the benefits at least in the long run. With upcoming GST bill, multiplexes will be major beneficiaries of a streamlined taxation system that will do away with the reviled ‘entertainment tax’ and a myriad of other taxes that have hampered growth of new cinemas, not to mention other stakeholders of the Indian economy. Just back from ShowEast, Miami and ExpoCine, Brasil, TheatreWorld is once again the media partner to CineAsia, Hong Kong (6-8 December 2016). See you all soon at CineAsia and do not forget to pick your copy of TheatreWorld magazine at the show!!! Raghavendra T Editor-Publisher

QSC, LLC Acquires Ultra-Stereo Labs, Inc QSC, LLC announces the acquisition of Ultra-Stereo Labs, Inc ("USL"), effective September 30, 2016. The acquisition will allow QSC to offer an industry-leading portfolio of audiovisual processing and B-chain solutions under the QSC and USL brands for the motion picture exhibition industry. "As the first major acquisition in the nearly 50-year history of our company, we naturally wanted to find a company that would be an excellent strategic fit for QSC," says Jatan Shah, Chief Operating Officer of QSC. "We recognize the many valuable contributions that USL has made to the cinema industry over the years, and are confident that the integration of the two companies will provide an even more powerful total value proposition for our customers. The two companies are complementary in terms of product offering and how we view our commitment to the customer." Barry Ferrell, QSC's Chief Strategy Officer and leader of the Cinema business unit for the company, agrees. "While there is certainly overlap in our domestic distribution channel, the breadth and depth of the QSC international distribution network will significantly expand the combined QSC/USL global footprint. And while the product catalogs have some areas of overlap, for the most part the catalogs are extremely complementary, allowing QSC to offer an unprecedented and comprehensive range of cinema solutions." Both companies are well-established in the global cinema market. QSC and USL product philosophies are extremely compatible; both emphasize high quality, high value products at a reasonable price, backed by best-in-class service and product support. This is evidenced in the fact that USL has won the highly-coveted International Cinema Technology Association's (ICTA) "Manufacturer of

the Year" award a record six times, and QSC has won it three times. QSC and USL are the only companies in the history of ICTA to win consecutive "back to back" awards. "I can think of no better company in the cinema industry to turn over the stewardship of the USL brand than QSC," says Jack Cashin, USL Founder and Chief Product Visionary. "We are so pleased to finalize this agreement, and look forward to an amazing future together." QSC is looking forward to joining forces with Jack Cashin as an integral part of the product development team for USL branded products. Founded in 1968, QSC has evolved from an audio amplifier manufacturer to a full audio systems supplier for the live sound, systems integration, and cinema industries. Based in Costa Mesa, CA, QSC is the top supplier of power amplifiers for the global cinema industry, and also a leader in signal processing and loudspeakers. San Luis Obispo, CA-based USL was founded by Jack Cashin in 1982, and has been one of the leading suppliers of award-winning audio signal processing and audio-visual test and measurement products for the cinema and pro AV industries.
QSC Announces DPM Series Digital Processor/ Monitors QSC announces the new DPM Series of digital signal processors/monitors.
DPM is a powerful audio signal processing solution for today's DCinema audio systems. The DPM builds on the legacy of QSC's DCM and DCP products to provide all signal processing and monitoring functions for Digital Cinema in a single integrated system. Designed to be used with QSC's Digital Cinema Amplifiers (DCA) and featuring advanced Intrinsic Correction settings for QSC's Digital Cinema Speakers, the DPM optimizes QSC loudspeaker and amplifier performance while simplifying cinema sound system wiring and configuration. The DPM is configurable for passive or bi-amp operation for 5.1 or 7.1 systems. Two models are available: DPM 100 and DPM 100H (with HDMI in/out and Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Surround 7.1, and DTS-HD decoding) for non-sync and alternative content sources. "Since we introduced the first DSPbased cinema crossover with built-in booth monitor almost 17 years ago, cinema operators have appreciated the multifunction capability and feature set that our DCM Series offered," says Mark Mayfield, Director of Global Cinema Marketing and Product Manager for QSC Cinema Products. "Technology has changed dramatically since then. Digital cinema has redefined the requirements of audio signal processors; crossovers, equalization, monitoring, sophisticated processing tailored to specific loudspeakers, and alternative digital audio format decoding are just a few of the new must-haves today. The new DPM models offer all of this and more in a compact two-rack space design at a very cost effective price point."
Christie Mirage 4KLH Delivers Stunning Presentations of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk Christie, a leader in creating and sharing the world's best visual and audio experiences, is delivering stunning presentations of Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee's new film Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk using customized dual-head Christie Mirage 4KLH RGB laser projection systems during the movie's premiere in Beijing and Shanghai. Screened in 4K resolution, stereo 3D, and at 120 frames a second (fps), the film made its debut at Beijing Bona Youtang International Cineplex on November 6, and premiere at the Shanghai Film Art Center on November 8. The Beijing premiere was attended by director Ang Lee and cast members Joe Alwyn and Mason Lee. The trio will subsequently travel to Shanghai for the final leg of the film's Asian premiere, which kicked off in Taipei last week. "We are very proud to be one of the few cinemas around the world to be equipped with the Christie Mirage 4KLH RGB laser projection system the only projector that is capable of screening Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk in 4K, 3D, and 120fps that's faithful to director Ang Lee's vision. This is the ultimate presentation of the movie with bright and highly realistic visuals, and we are excited to offer the most spectacular cinematic experience to our patrons," said Dong Yu, President, Bona Film Group. Zhonglun Ren, President, Shanghai Film Group, commented, "Having worked closely with Christie to unveil the world's first commercial RGB laser projection system in 2014, we are honoured and thrilled to be among a select few premium venues worldwide to once again push the technological boundaries of movie presentations by equipping our flagship auditorium with the dualhead Christie Mirage 4KLH RGB laser

projection system for screenings director Lee's technologically groundbreaking film in 4K, 3D, and 120fps. We are proud to play a part in making cinema history with this exceptional movie presentation that no other filmmaker has attempted." The Christie Mirage 4KLH system has been specially modified to screen Lee's ultimate rendition of his storytelling vision. Featuring Christie TruLife electronics platform with an industry-leading video-processing pipeline of up to 1.2 Gigapixels per second, and anchored by the Christie Freedom laser illumination system, the Mirage 4KLH can produce up to 60,000 lumens per head, with potentially up to 120,000 lumens when two projection heads and two sets of RGB laser light sources are used (i.e., in a dual 6-Primary configuration). The dual Mirage RGB laser projection systems fitted at Beijing Bona Youtang International Cineplex and Shanghai Film Art Center are configured to produce a brightness of 28 foot-lamberts for the finest 3Dviewing experience unmatched by any other cinema in China. In the United States, the dual Christie Mirage projectors delivered the eastcoast premiere at the New York Film Festival and are set to repeat this momentous showing for west-coast audiences at the ArcLight Cinemas Cinerama Dome on November 10. "We're delighted that Bona Film Group and Shanghai Film Group have installed our dual-head Mirage
4KLH system to bring director Ang Lee's definitive version of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk - in 4K, 3D, and 120fps with a brightness of 28 footlamberts - to audiences in Beijing and Shanghai," said Jason Pei, Deputy General Manager, Christie China. "The Christie Mirage system is the most advanced projection system available, and the only system that can screen this landmark film in the way that the Director intended it to be seen. We are thankful to Bona Film Group and Shanghai Film Group for all their hard work to make the screening of this film in 4K, 3D, and 120 fps a reality. Without their full support and cooperation, this would not have been possible." Lin Yu, Vice President, Christie Asia Pacific, added, "Christie has set a new milestone in cinema projection with the presentation of Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk in the unprecedented format of 4K, 3D, and 120 fps with our Mirage system. From the premiere screenings in New York, Taipei, and now in Beijing and Shanghai, Christie is the only projector manufacturer in the world that is able to display Lee's vision as intended, and this clearly demonstrates the superiority of our projection technologies." Lee, who won two directing Oscars for Brokeback Mountain and Life of Pi, is known for both his dramatic storytelling and adoption of new technologies. For Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk, which tells the story of a soldier who fought in the Iraq war, Lee decided to push the technological boundaries in order to give the film an "immersive" and "realistic" experience of the reality and emotional journey of soldiers. It is the first ever feature film to be shot in such a high frame rate- over twice the previous record (Peter Jackson's The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, shot at 48 fps) and five times the standard speed of 24 fps.

HOYTS Installs Australia's First Christie RGB Laser Projection System at its New Cineplex Christie and HOYTS announced that HOYTS Chadstone has become the first cineplex in Australia to install Christie's groundbreaking RGB laser projection system that delivers the ultimate visuals for the best cinematic experience. Located within the sprawling Chadstone Shopping Centre, HOYTS Chadstone comprises 13 auditoriums, including the 390-seat "Xtremescreen" premium auditorium fitted with a massive 24-meter wide screen - one of the biggest in Australia. The projection system here comprises a Christie CP42LH3DLP 4K RGB laser projector featuring enhanced wavelength diversification (EWD), connected via fibre optic to a laser rack housing nine laser modules that generate white light from multiple combinations of RGB primary colour wavelengths to offer a spectacular 3D viewing experience on silver screens. Installed by the technical teams from Christie and HOYTS Cinema Technology Group, the system generates 45,000 lumens much brighter than what current digital projectors with lamps can offer. "We are proud to offer this brand new cinema technology for our guests to enjoy a movie experience like no other," said Damian Keogh, Group CEO, HOYTS. "Making a trip to the movies a memorable experience is important for us and introducing Christie's cutting-edge projector is part of making that happen." Adam Wrightson, General Manager, HOYTS Cinema Technology Group, added, "The Christie RGB laser projection system launching first in our biggest cinema at HOYTS Chadstone will redefine the digital cinema experience by achieving the brightest and the most realistic colour reproduction, higher contrast, and dramatically reduced maintenance requirements, resulting in rich and vibrant visuals. by the flexibility of the system, whereby laser modules can easily be added, removed, activated or disabled depending on the brightness requirements, so it is highly scalable and easily upgradable." Anchored by the Christie Freedom laser illumination system, the CP42LH produces a colour gamut that exceeds the DCI P3 colour spec and replicates the Rec. 2020 space, making it the most advanced RGB laser cinema projection system available on the market. It consists of rack-mounted laser modules where each module can produce up to 5,000 lumens of white light. Because of the scalability of this platform, up to 12 laser modules can be easily added, removed, activated or disabled depending on brightness requirements. This provides up to 60,000 lumens per rack. Each laser module is also independently cooled, providing built-in fault protection, improved efficiency and reliability. Michael Bosworth, General Manager, Christie Australia, said, "We're heartened that HOYTS, Australia's largest single-brand cinema chain and a longstanding user of Christie cinema solutions for many years, has placed its trust in our award-winning RGB laser projection system, which has effectively demonstrated how 3D light levels, colour fidelity, image
uniformity, viewing comfort, and a sense of immersion can be greatly improved. The cinematic presentation delivered by our CP42LH with EWD in one of the HOYTS Chadstone Xtremescreen auditoriums will not only captivate movie-goers, but also provides confidence to cinema exhibitors in terms of performance and reliability." Lin Yu, Vice President, Christie Asia Pacific, commented, "We're delighted that HOYTS has installed our RGB laser projection system for its latest state-of-the-art cinema complex in Melbourne to deliver an unparalleled laser projection and viewing experience. Since our RGB laser rollouts two years ago, major exhibitors around the world have selected our RGB laser architecture, which continuously demonstrated the capability to provide incredible brightness, a reinforced colour spectrum and an extraordinary contrast ratio that significantly improves the efficiency of 3D projection systems." Besides the CP42LH deployed in one of the Xtremescreen auditoriums, the remaining halls in HOYTS Chadstone are equipped with Christie Solaria™ Series digital cinema projectors comprising the CP2220, CP2230 and CP4230 models, all of which provide the best in both conventional and premier movie experiences. Regular movie screenings will commence with the official opening of the completely rebuilt cineplex on October 13, which will offer a host of amenities, including luxurious halls with reclining chairs. Christie's RGB laser projection system is the preferred choice for a premium 3D cinema experience in a number of cinema chains around the world. In Asia, theatres equipped with Christie laser projection technology include Tongzhou Wanda Cinema in Beijing, the iconic Shanghai Film Art Center, Suning Cinema in Shanghai and Zhenjiang, Oscar International Cinema in Xi'an, and SM Seaside City in Cebu, the Philippines.

Ivan Cannau, Vice President for Barco Latin America, comments: "Through our innovative technologies, Cinesystem's audience will be able to enjoy enhanced images, while driving down both capital expenditures and operational costs to help Cinesystem accomplish improved overall business excellence on movie showings, which is unique in Latin America so far."
"4K delivers four times more detail than ordinary HD and with more and more movies being shot, distributed and projected in stunning 4K cinema owners needs to match the ambition of content creators to give audiences the best possible cinematic experience", adds Enrico Ferrari, Regional Sales Head of Central Eastern & Southern Europe, Sony Digital Cinema 4K. "Plus, the SRXR515 projectors are a great solution to offer 4K quality images." The range of SRX-R515 projectors offers high quality 4K digital cinema projection, providing more brightness and sharpness, and with a low operating cost. Moreover, every
R500 series projector features Sony's highly reliable HPM (High Pressure Mercury) multi-lamp array, whose design, as every lamp has its own protective cartridge, enhances safety in comparison with Xenon sources. Cinematography Pereira has been responsible for carrying out the integration, providing Cinemas Aqualon with technical support and the installation of Sony's following equipment: six SRX-R515P projectors with an interchangeable lens system for 2D and 3D, Theatre Management System, that streamlines content ingest and management of show playlists, and Sony Digital Cinema 3D systems that offer uniquely smooth, easy-on-the eye images, with continuous projection of separate left/right eye images. The deal is the result of Sony Digital Cinema 4K's Managed Services, a set of financing solutions to help cinema owners acquire 4K projectors and manage their long-term maintenance. Sony Managed Services enable cinema owners to replace their equipment more serenely and transition 2K technology to powerful 4K. With a transparent monthly fee, the agreement significantly reduces the initial investment, while improving cash flow for the operator. Due to the flexibility of the Managed Service contract, Sony will take care of the remaining three 2K DLP projectors at Aqualon Cinemas in terms of remote support and maintenance. "Sony Managed Service deals cover spare parts warranty, installation, project management, site survey before installation, maintenance, and remote technical support" adds Ferrari. The SRX-R515 is a high quality 4K digital cinema projection system designed for use in small or medium sized screen auditorium. The projection system is fully DCI compliant and boasts design features that make it more cost effective and

simple-to-use. The reliable HPM (High Pressure Mercury) multi-lamp array ensures show continuity by removing the risk of 'dark screen' outages. Even if one lamp fails during the performance, presentation continues uninterrupted at slightly reduced brightness, without impairing audience enjoyment of the show. Offering true 4K quality from the lens to the integrated media block, the projection system features an improved SXRD optical engine, industry leading contrast ratio averaging 8000:1, 15,000 lumens brightness, easy-on-the-eye Sony 3D and high frame rate capabilities up to 60 frames per second. The system also features high-speed content ingest/transfer and high capacity storage.

IMAX will provide the centre an ongoing array of new, premium interactive content experiences that are expected to range between 5 and 15 minutes in length each. The Company is in advanced stages with several content developers, including Hollywood studios and gaming publishers, to produce and distribute high-quality VR experiences to its centres. IMAX also plans to eventually incorporate premium content resulting from the cinema-grade virtual reality camera that it is currently developing in partnership with Google. "For nearly 50 years, IMAX's mission has been to give audiences - of all ages and across generations - a reason to get off their couches and leave the comfort of home to go out to the cinema. The agreement with ODEON marks an important milestone in our continued effort to deliver differentiated entertainment experiences - now through locationbased VR," said IMAX Corp. CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "We are extremely pleased with the significant progress we've made on this initiative in this short period of time and believe this commitment from such a significant European exhibitor is a testament to the interest and potential of this offering. ODEON is a longtime partner that shares our vision in delivering guests the ultimate in premium experiences and we look forward to ushering in the next evolution of immersive entertainment with this test centre."
The centre will employ a new modular design - proprietary to IMAX - that will consist of several "pods" to allow multiple players to enjoy interactive, exciting, moveable VR experiences. The pods, which are designed to optimize user mobility and interaction in virtual environments, can be adapted for specific content experiences whether single or multi-user. "We're always looking for new ways to give our guests an even more immersive experience, so are very excited to be hosting Europe's first IMAX VR centre at ODEON Printworks" said Paul Donovan, CEO of ODEON & UCI Cinemas Group. "We have a longstanding close relationship with IMAX which creates unforgettable experiences in many of our cinemas across Europe, so we are delighted to be alongside them again, at the cutting edge of innovation, to introduce and pilot awesome new technology which will delight our guests." IMAX is in the process of launching its first showroom and pilot IMAX VR centre in Los Angeles and is targeting to open additional test facilities in China, Japan, the U.S., the Middle East and Western Europe in the coming months. The Company plans to use these pilot locations to test several factors including the overall customer experience, pricing models and the types of content featured. If successful, the intent is to roll out the concept globally to select multiplexes as well as commercial locations such as shopping centres and tourist destinations.

Severtson Announces New Microperf Options for Folded Cinema Projection Screens; Featured At Expocine 2016 Severtson Screens, a global leader in innovative and quality projection screens for the cinema, commercial, pro AV, and home theatre markets, has announced that new microperf options are now available for its folded SeVision 3D GX line of cinema projection screens. The line will be featured during ExpoCine 2016, held in SĂŁo Paulo, Brazil from Nov. 16-18 at the Convention Center Frei Mug.
Dan Maxwell, Severtson Corp. V.P. & Chief Operating Officer. "This option is now the screen of choice for highend, premier theatres and cinema chains. The Severtson microperf viewing surface practically eliminates moirĂŠ which is often problematic of screens with larger perforation, yet continues to provide a more realistic soundstage allowing speakers to be placed directly behind the screen."
"Our new folded shipping method now makes international distribution of our industry-acclaimed S?Vision 3D GX highly affordable, reducing international shipping costs by up to 70 percent," explained Toby Severtson, president and CEO of Severtson Corp. "Besides standard perforated white and sliver screens, we now also offer the immensely popular microperf option to the folded SeVision 3D GX line of cinema projection screens for international shipment. Since its recent launch, we've had to renovate our facility and upgrade our machinery to keep up with worldwide demand." According to Severtson, microperf offers multiple benefits versus standard perforation screens, such as seven percent open space against the traditional 4.5 percent open space. He added that microperf is also the perfect solution for 4k, 8k, 12k and even higher projection resolutions as these technologies becomes available in the future.
Severtson explained that they have been shipping these screens both domestically and internationally to very pleased customers who, up until recently, could not afford them because of the enormous international shipping fees. Additionally, now there is a solution for complex installations where a long tube housing the cinema screen is impractical or not feasible to transport through the building.
"Microperf is becoming the industry standard and is what has put the 'folded' line over the top," added
TW-28
December 2016-February 2017
"Our folded screen technology has proven again and again to drastically reduce international shipping costs and makes these screens available to every customer worldwide," Severtson continued. "And to top that off, our new cinema screen price estimator enables our dealers with even quicker cinema screen price quotes and delivery estimates of both our folded and non-folded options." The new cinema screen price estimator is now live and available for Severtson's dealer base via its website as well as a mobile app for Apple iOS and Android
Smartphones. Once the dealer is registered with an account and granted access to the website, the tool provides product and packaging price estimates for Severtson cinema screens as soon as a dealer inputs the necessary required information, such as screen dimensions, coating, material, and desired packaging. The packaging portion of the price estimate is then calculated based on the selected product's weight and container dimensions, which the tool also provides. For each estimate requested, dealers will receive an automated email and PDF file detailing the screen price and packaging estimate. Prices are only estimates and do not include shipping charges or any other potential international fees. Shipping costs associated with such large packages as these were out-ofreach for so many customers up until recently. Now, Severtson Screens' SeVision 3D GX screens can be folded and packed into a much smaller crate without any loss in structural integrity or performance abilities. "Severtson's new folded screen process not only reduces international shipping fees, the smaller packaging simplifies delivery to theatres and is more convenient for installers as folded screens are much easier to get into buildings and uncrate than standard long-tube roll packaging... especially when a theatre is in a unique structure, such as a high-rise or multi-story theatre complex," added Maxwell.

Sets New Standards with Christie The recent opening of Cinemas Procinal at Viva La Ceja is proving to be a milestone in the lives of the town's 70,000 inhabitants, given that it is not only its first shopping mall but also its very first cinema offering the excellence of Christie.
First all-Christie Entertainment Complex in Colombia Christie, a leader in creating and delivering the world's best visual and audio experiences, announced that Cinemas Procinal La Ceja is Colombia's first multiplex to adopt the Christie Vive Audio sound system. Offering Exceptional Movie Experience The Cinemas Procinal multiplex in La Ceja has four screens with a total capacity of 663 spectators. Two of the screens are equipped with VibroSound technology, exclusive to Procinal, which gives the audience the added sensation of movement in their seats to convey an even better experience of the movie. To ensure an optimum experience for spectators, the audio was a truly critical factor for Cinemas Procinal. The company was looking for the best solution and that's when Christie Vive Audio made its appearance. "After having studied the design, configuration and functioning of Vive Audio, we quickly realized that the capacity, quality and dimension of sound that this technology can deliver exactly what we were after," explained Juan Carlos Mayungo, managing and financial director of Cinemas Procinal. He went on to add that "it's obvious just how many hours of work and testing the Christie team dedicated to
the Vive Audio system. Our longstanding relationship with Christie meant that we were already aware of the reliability of its projectors, so we decided to take the next step and go for its cinema sound system." The connection between Cinemas Procinal and Christie goes back a long way and in fact more than half of its roughly 150 screens throughout the country are equipped with the brand's projectors. Specifically, Cinemas Procinal has equipped its theatres at La Ceja with the Vive Audio LS Series with 7.1 distributed sound applications, including LS1 screen channel loudspeakers, LS1S surround loudspeakers, S118 subwoofers, as well as a variety of CDA Series Class D amplifiers. The end result is a completely-enveloping cinema sound environment that affords exceptional performance and power. The loudspeakers from the Christie Vive Audio LS Series utilize planar ribbon driver technology, with its low distortion and superior transitory response characteristics. Likewise, the single-enclosure design enables quick
Patrick Artiaga, director of Business Development in Christie's Audio division, said "It is an honour for us that Cinemas Procinal has chosen our revolutionary cinema sound solution for its new multiplex. The loudspeakers in the Christie Vive Audio LS Series are a cost-effective entry to superior cinema sound, ensuring the perfect reproduction of high resolution sound and high dynamic range in compliance with DCI standards." In addition to Christie Vive Audio, the new multiplex is also using DLP Cinema technology projectors from the Christie Solaria Series to equip its four screens. Three of them have Christie CP2220projectors (22,000 lumens, 2K resolution upgradable to 4K) and the fourth has a Christie CP2215 projector (15,000 lumens, 2K resolution).
Latest in a Long List Cinemas Procinal La Ceja is now the latest in a long list of film theatres offering complete Christie cinema solutions that are setting new standards in superior cinema experiences. Diego López Villamil, general manager of Christie NOLA (North Latin America), said: "Cinemas Procinal is always at the forefront of new film technologies. The combination of Christie projectors with Vive Audio sound will ensure that its customers at La Ceja will enjoy the ultimate movie-going experience." Spectators' response to the new film theatres couldn't be better. "Our customers are thrilled with the new screens and we are getting really positive feedback," concluded Juan Carlos Mayungo, who also underscored Christie's excellent post-sales support.

Mariam Yazmin El-Bacha, Operations Director, MBO Cinemas, walks us through the details of the well-planned renovation of the cinema.
It's a kaleidoscope of cultures, cuisines and arts. A diverse bustling city on the island of Borneo, Malaysia, Kuching is the capital of the state of Sarawak. Here is a city that seamlessly blends vintage colonial buildings and modern structures. This picturesque city is home to the vibrant The Spring shopping mall that endeavours to create lively and memorable retail experiences. Fifteen years ago, the cinemas were spaces where transactions happened. What we called: Tic, Tac, Toe. Box Office, Concessions, Halls. But all of that has changed now," observes MBO Cinemas Operations Director Mariam, Yazmin El-Bacha.

It is All About the Experience There's a sea change in the way consumers and their experience is perceived today. People feel that they have a space in cinemas for them to relax, enjoy a coffee, get delicious popcorn and watch amazing movies. MBO's new locations are reflecting this perspective. Cafes, Premier lounges and Kids Halls, as well as PLF screen where patrons have state-of-the-art technology are being introduced.

The lobby in Kuching was very typical of old MBO cinemas. They had lots of red and blue (the company colours), with a design that was a bit old fashioned and almost baroque. Besides from the look and feel of the cinema, the two hot spots in the lobby (Ticket box and Concessions) were not designed following operational standards of "station concept", making transactions longer, as staff would have to run back and forth to get popcorn and drinks. "Keeping these in mind we went on to the design phase, thinking of improving operation and mobility for our team as well as the guest experience. For our new projects, we usually work with architects from overseas, however this time, since it was a renovation, we decided to engage with a renowned local architect who had done cinemas before and understood the importance of checking old drawings," explains Mariam.

Now people can hear, smell and see the popcorn while it is being made, generating that "hypnotic" effect on people. Something a popcorn warmer can never do!
Cafecito - the New Star Attraction At the back of the lobby, MBO has its new business unit. A cafĂŠ called Cafecito, and next to it, a playground for kids. At the Cafecito, The design phase took the longest as it needed every little move to be checked at the site.
The New Design The new design centres on improving the guest experience right from the moment of purchasing of tickets to the moment they leave the cinema. The cinema design respects the essential qualities of Sarawak, in which wood is the main character, exalting its noble and warm attributes in a hip and entertaining environment. "We used colours that exude refined tastes in a confortable and approachable way, hence the use of wood laminates in our counters to create the soft and warm inviting feel," she adds. Mirror laminate ceilings were used to cover the ceilings, giving the space (in not so high areas) amplitude and reflection. "We moved the box office outside, facing the common areas of the mall, increasing the number of POS and improving the ergonomics of the counter design," Mariam points out.

visitors can now enjoy barista style espresso coffee, frappuccinos, milkshakes, cakes and snacks. "We provide magazines and board games to our guests to enjoy while their kids are having fun at the playground," she says.
Sarawak's First Premier Hall MBO introduced a new concept called Premier Hall. Their biggest hall has been modified, incorporating the
"balcony" style where the top tier area of the cinema becomes an exclusive area. The Premier Hall has an exclusive entrance and private lounge. The access to this area of the cinema is through the Premier lounge. The decoration of the lounge is elegant and luxurious yet confortable. The seats are confortable sofas gliders from Ferco, complimenting the premier movie experience perfectly.
Star Club Loyalty Patrons can also join MBO StarClub loyalty programme for free and are entitled to many rewards by using their StarPoints to redeem free movie ticket, popcorn, drinks and other exclusive movie premiums. Members can also jump onto the Member's Priority Lane and get free movie tickets during their "birthday month". StarClub is a highly popular programme with more than one million members as of date.
Future Plans MBO has completed renovation at another site in Johor Bahru, where they incorporated a Cafecito, refurbishing the look and feel and improving operational design. Next on the list is renovation at Setapak location, a 7-screen that needs a facelift. Four other locations are also lined up for renovation. From launching its first Cineplex in Phnom Penh, Cambodia to bagging the Exhibitor of the Year Award at CineAsia, Hong Kong in 2014, its milestones stand testimony to the success story called Major. With its aggressive expansion strategy, the Group has a total of 650 screens. WESTGATE, East Ville, and Promenade are the significant projects of the year. These are a prime example of its expansion goal to bring entertainment to the people in areas where people currently have no convenient access to cinema. Enhancing lifestyle, creating a recreational place for hangout and job opportunities for locals in remote areas... These serve as a testament to the mission of Major Cineplex group, "to bring the best movie experience in areas where people currently have no convenient access to cinema." Under the leadership of its Chairman Vicha Poolvaraluk, the group has been presenting world-class entertainment to its patrons. TheatreWorld catches up with the man who is on the Forbes list of Thailand's 50 richest people. Excerpts from the interview: How did your tryst with Major Cineplex begin? Where did it all start? At the very beginning, I conceptualized a standalone Cineplex; a cinema combined with entertainment complex. Back then it was a very new idea; no one had ever done it before in Thailand.
When the opportunity presented itself, I built Major Pinklao, the first Cineplex of my empire. The result was overwhelmingly good; we disrupted the market dominated by single screen theatres and completely changed the industry landscape. Major Cineplex has been expanding in a big way. Tell us about your latest branch at WESTGATE, East Ville, Promenade. Our expansion strategy has always been aggressive. To date, we have a total of 650 screens. This year, we have 3 big projects: WESTGATE, East Ville, and Promenade. These are a prime example of our expansion goal to bring entertainment to the people in areas where people currently have no convenient access to cinema. We look to enhance lifestyle, create a place to hang out as well as job opportunities for locals in the area. WESTGATE, East Ville, and Promenade are all in the outskirts of Bangkok. This very fact serves as a testament to the mission of Major Cineplex group, 'to bring the best movie experience to the customer'. Your flagship Paragon Cineplex is in for big innovation. Share some details of the innovation with us. We consider Paragon Cineplex to be our flagship branch -- the "Best Cinema in the World." Whether it is in terms of technology, designs, or even service, we pride ourselves in challenging the status quo and constantly improving. We make it our mission to leave the very best impressions at all touch points with a customer. We have a team of Movie Butlers dedicated to catch every opportunity we have to communicate with our customers; learn more about who they are and what they like; and we try to improve our service quality from there. Customers are new to this kind of luxury in theatres; they may have seen it in 5-star hotels but not in cinemas. Additionally, this is the branch where we first test all of our newest technologies and applications to further enhance our customers' experience. Tell us more about how Thai cinema has been evolving over the years. How are Thai films competing with Hollywood movies in SEA market? Thai cinema is still in a growth stage. There are still many places with no access to a quality cinema so there is still room for expansion. We are growing at about 15% or about 6080 screens every year. Countries in Southeast Asian region share a lot of similarities in terms of culture, religion and philosophy. When it comes to movies, it's really no surprise that Thai movies have received such tremendous support from our neighbours, and I strongly believe that Thai movies can definitely take on Hollywood movies in this market. So our audience isn't just 67 million Thais, but also the 200 million people in the whole CLMV region as well. To cope with that demand, we have created 4 production houses: M39, Talent1, Transformation Film, and CJ Major dedicated to making high profile and high production value

Thai films. Aside from SEA, Thai movies are also the main traffic driver in upcountry Thailand (outside Bangkok), which goes hand in hand with our aggressive outward expansion strategy as well. Current market share of Thai films is around 30%; we hope to drive it up to 60% in 3 years. How is Major Cineplex creating a strong foothold in neighbouring countries? Tell us more about its presence in CLMV region. We opened our first branch abroad in Phnom Penh, Cambodia almost three years ago and it proves to be an instant success, selling over 1.2 million tickets a year. We have recently opened up two more in Vientiane and Pakse, Laos. Although these branches are still in infancy stage, I believe they have tremendous growth potential going forward and we are looking to expand into Myanmar as well as Vietnam. How has the consumer behaviour changed and how is Major Cineplex adapting to the changing dynamics? Cinema industry today has a lot more competitors than ever before, both direct and indirect. Social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram have become the major mediums for connecting with our customers. Online games are occupying more and more of our customer's time. The challenge for us as a leader in cinema industry is to develop ourselves fast enough to cope with lifestyle changes. We differentiate ourselves by offering unmatched cinematic experience unique to Major Cineplex -- from luxury seats and grand lounges to the state-ofthe-art projector and sound system. In addition, we utilize all social media platforms to connect with our customers and we have improvised
accordingly to offer presence on all of those platforms. We have teams creating platform specific contents and we are building our YouTube channel to be the destination for watching movie trailers and updates in the movie world. Prompt feedbacks from customers have also enabled us to identify areas of weakness and improve the quality of service. In the future, we hope to integrate mobile payment technology and QR code check-in to create 100% self-service and completely eliminate the needs for box office. How does Major Cineplex cope with the increasing expectations and changing technology; competing with not just other theatres but services such as Netflix. Our target customers are 18-35 years old; 70% are single. This group has purchasing power as well as the time to spend their money; their interest is geared towards beauty, fitness and lifestyle. We understand that this specific group is highly digitized, but we also believe that regardless of all the digital entertainments available, they still have time for enjoying the cinema. In the future, we see that Video on Demand and online content from providers like YouTube could pose threat to our business model, so we try to evolve further. We do not see ourselves as just provider of movies, but we provide lifestyle experience; we provide a social place for people to mingle; we offer hotel-level facility, and we provide restaurant quality food and snacks. In a way, we try to create a complete ecosystem of lifestyle destination which extends far beyond just movies. Tell us more about your customer segmentation strategy. Big Data management allows us to collect very specific data on customer spending behaviour and turn it into valuable marketing insights, which in turn, help us create promotions and loyalty programs that are more appealing and tailormade specifically to each segment. Major Cineplex believes in enlarging its customer base through sponsorship partners. Please elaborate on this strategy. Our goal is to provide the best cinematic experience to our customers. This sometimes means that the investment that goes into building a very luxurious cinema can be very high, but we still want to keep our ticket price affordable to our consumers. On the basis of simple ticket revenue the investment is sometimes, frankly, not economic. This is where our sponsors come in; we work very closely with them to understand their outreach and communication strategies, and to develop in collaboration with them, packages that allow them to efficiently and effectively execute their strategies in partnership with us. The sponsorship fee money they provide goes into keeping the ticket price at reasonable level. Our partners, because of the collaborative approach we follow, also help us promote our facilities, thus expanding our customer base as well. Everybody wins, starting primarily with our mutual consumers. What is your long-term vision for Major Cineplex? Share some of your goals for the next five years. In terms of our product offerings, we want to have 1,000 screens by 2020, with a growing emphasis on expansion of our network outside of
Thailand. We also want to increase consumption rate of our customer base. We look at Korea, for example, where their movie ticket to population ratio is about 3:1; meaning each person in the country visits the theatre 3 times per year on average. In Thailand, that number is about 2:3, with our total number of movie tickets sold annually still less than our total population. We hope that by providing more access to movie theatres in upcountry locations, we could boost that number up somewhere closer to our more developed international counterparts. Tell us more about your ventures in the pipeline, especially overseas expansion. We are looking to increase our exposure in CLMV region, mainly Myanmar and Vietnam, because of the high growth potential and relatively low competition -- a "blue ocean" of opportunity. The challenge is to find local partners that share our vision and can provide meaningful insights to help smoothen the process. You are on the Forbes list of Thailand's 50 richest. How does it
feel? What would you define as the secret of your success? I'm very honoured and humbled by the award. I view myself as a guy trying to achieve his dream of providing world-class cinematic experience. I know I still have a long way to go but the acknowledgement tells me I'm heading in the right direction and I'm very grateful for that. As for the "secret of success", I don't think I can name one specific thing that singularly assures success. Rather, it's a combination of dedication, passion and a lot of hard work by a lot of dedicated and loyal team members. I'm very fortunate to be able to do what I love and that has given me the strength and perseverance to overcome many obstacles and keep going forward. As someone in the movie industry, I think it's only right for me to quote one of my favourite characters, Rocky Balboa: "You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard ya hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done!"

Michael's Green Paper Michael Karagosian speaks about the motion picture industry's transition to digital cinema, the most significant transition in motion pictures since the introduction of sound. In this issue, he speaks on ASC's new test protocol and the patent policy…
ASC Releases Test Protocol to Guide Next Generation Cinema The American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Next Generation Cinema Display (NGCD) subcommittee released its Cinema Display Evaluation Plan and Test Protocol, available at the ASC web site. As one of the co-chairs of the subcommittee that produced the report, and its editor, I'll also point readers to an article co-authored with long-time friend and esteemed co-chair Eric Rodli in Digital Cinema Report, where we address many of the background issues that led to development of the Test Protocol. The ASC document represents the first step taken towards the goal of identifying where value is created from the filmmaker's point-of-view. While the Digital CInema Report article does a fine job of explaining "why" the Test Protocol is important, I will further explain here the dynamics that such an effort will drive.
If next generation cinema is to embrace higher dynamic range in picture, the economics of producing such images in cinema will have to improve significantly. Today, for example, a Dolby Cinema projector is said to cost over $1M. While delivering pictures with stunning dynamic range, even Dolby doesn't refer to the images produced as high dynamic range. An HDR version of the projector would be prohibitively expensive, if even technically possible. The point to make is that the ASC Test Protocol isn't designed to prove that today's technology is adequate for an HDR experience. Instead, knowing that technology often finds a way to solve problems, the intent is to highlight the goals that should be achieved. More than one technology is likely to emerge. Two such technologies have already been
discussed in this publication: direct LED displays and the phasemodulation technology under development by Vancouver-based MTT Technologies (now owned by Barco). For these technologies to be cinema-ready, more R&D is needed, and R&D funds in a world without equipment subsidies are precious. Technology providers need to know where the target is in order to invest efficiently. And those who set the target need to do so with an eye on creating an experience that's more than just "better," but highly valued by movie-goers. If the ASC effort succeeds, it will produce a set of materials that will allow technology providers to evaluate their work towards producing next generation displays and projectors. That output requires several steps, of which only the first is described in the Test Protocol.
Time to Tidy Up the Patent Policy Standards development organizations, known as SDOs, inevitably face patent issues in their work. The ISO MPEG standards committee is perhaps the most successful in the area of patents. SMPTE not so much. While SMPTE prides itself by attempting to model its procedures after ISO, SMPTE caters to a very different set of members, with a far smaller budget, which contributes to problems in the area of intellectual property that would not normally occur in ISO. MPEG succeeds with intellectual property because it is organized to be
TW-50

pro-business around the world. Formed in 1988, it famously embraced the role of intellectual property in shared technology by creating a mechanism for pooling patents from multiple companies. MPEG offered the opportunity for all players to share the pie, on the basis that it's better to have a small slice of a very large pie, than to have a big slice of nothing. ISO can accomplish this because it is an international standards body But standards bodies such as MPEG address the consumer market, which by any measure is massively larger
than the cinema market. The entire worldwide footprint of digital cinema media blocks, for example, is less than 2 weeks of worldwide shipments of wireless headsets. In the hierarchy of standards organizations, ISO is top of the ladder. ISO's membership consists of one representative per country, which in the case of the US, is ANSI (American National Standards Institute). ANSI's membership consists of numerous standards bodies and organizations in the US, including SMPTE. Neither ISO nor ANSI allow individuals to be members. SMPTE,
• TECHNOLOGY • on the other hand, only allows individuals to be members. Budgets and legal resources are sized accordingly. SMPTE caters to the media industry, and its smallness and membership of individuals fosters a rich environment of experts for standards development. But when it comes to intellectual property, it is the companies that are the actors. It should be no surprise, then, that SMPTE operates in a very different environment than ISO when it comes to patents. While SMPTE prides itself as modeling policies around those of ISO, its rules for managing patent disclosures are proving to be inadequate. The declaration of essential claims is where a problem has come up. SMPTE has a professionally prepared patent statement that is to completed and submitted along with an input document to a committee. The purpose of this is to fairly disclose the submission of technology that incorporates intellectual property. If essential claims are declared to exist, the company has 45 days to disclose
them. Disclosure is important, as it puts competing interests within the committee on a level playing field. Following disclosure, alternatives can be sought to replace elements that infringe, for example. There is the odd chance that a contentious situation could occur where a competitor disagrees that the essential claims are valid. Not all matters can be resolved in a standards committee. But without disclosure, the playing field will be anything but level. SMPTE, however, provides no consequence for not following through with an agreement to disclose essential claims. The tendency is to shove enforcement of patent statements off to volunteer chairs of committees. Such chairs are typically engineers, and rarely versed in handling legal documents, nor did they accept the role with the expectation to do so. In the case of 25CSS, one such patent statement has been allowed to go over a year without follow through for essential claims by the submitter of technology. Fortunately, no committee activity based on the
input document has yet taken place. But this will change, in which case it would be very wrong to allow nonenforcement to continue. The right thing to do is to enforce the 45 day rule, and provide a consequence. If a company claims to have essential claims, it must put them on the table within the allotted time frame. If it fails to do so, then the patent statement should be declared void, and the company given the opportunity to re-submit a new patent statement declaring that no essential claims exist. If the company doesn't wish to to do this, then both the patent statement and the input document should be rejected. A clean and clear set of rules such as these are simple to uniformly enforce and would go a long way towards creating a fair environment for standards development. The Compelling Reasons "5.1 or 7.1 or Immersive Sound - A great debate!", an insightful discussion at Big Cine Expo 2016 at Chennai Trade Centre, Chennai is one of the most significant topics in the cinema exhibition industry today. Distinguished industry experts from across India put forth their thoughts on the subject. Big Cine Expo is the first-of-its-kind event to successfully present an International Trade Show & Convention for Multiplexes, Single-Screens and Malls in India.
Panellists:
Overview:
Renjith S Nair - Domain Manager (Immersive Audio), Real Image Media Technologies
By the end of 2016 India could see a lot of immersive sound installation taking away the conventional 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound. Theatre owners are bit confused to go in for the new technology or keep the existing sound, ROI, increased foot falls, etc and also many manufacturers coming up with their own technology. A great debate!

Discussion: S Sankarshan - Director Technical, Sonics started the discussion by quizzing the panellists on the common cinemagoers' understanding of sound experience
vis-à-vis the visual elements and the possible measures that can improve their understanding. The panellists opined that sound technology, 5.1 or 7.1 or Immersive Sound, cannot be seen in isolation and that it is part of the larger business of entertainment. Raj Vartak - Head, Cinema Sales & Content Services, Dolby Labs, also shared titbits from his personal experience. He explained that although a lay person may not know the technology but can definitely see the difference. Anirvan Ghose Director, Pulz Electronics and Renjith S Nair - Domain Manager (Immersive Audio), Real Image Media Technologies, also agreed that sound technology may not be a well
• BUSINESS TRENDS • understood subject but it's an integral part of the film viewing experience. According to the panellists, return on investment (ROI) and viability was a challenge and not the awareness levels of exhibitors. Good sound quality also emerged as a compelling reason for the audiences to come to theatre despite television and other entertainment media and the big P - Piracy. RP Balamurugan - Executive Director, Pro Visual Audio and Joyson Kumar Vice President, AGS Cinemas
reiterated their confidence in the power of big screen cinema vis-à-vis home theatre. Maintaining the standards in system integration and calibration was also a point of discussion. Being an exhibitor himself, Joyson highlighted the challenges faced by cinema owners in keeping up the standards and the reasons for compromise, if any.
Takeaway:
and so did the dilemma of being unable to interact directly with the technology engineers of the companies in question. For the industry, whether it is 5.1 or 7.1 or Immersive Sound - the choice will depend on difference the new technology makes to cinema viewing experience. The challenges of retaining the customers and ensuring they visit again should be the deciding factor.
The right price point emerged as one of the concerns among the audiences
Projection Technology - The Ever-Changing Future "4K/Laser/3D - Future-Proof Technology in Projection", an insightful discussion at Big Cine Expo 2016 at Chennai Trade Centre, Chennai was one of the most interactive sessions of the event. Distinguished panellists, both Indian and international, gave their perspective into emerging technologies - challenges and opportunities. Big Cine Expo is the first-of-its-kind event to successfully present an International Trade Show & Convention for Multiplexes, Single-Screens and Malls in India.

• BUSINESS TRENDS • Nico De Clercq - Strategic Marketing Manager, Barco, analysed the trends from a global perspective. He elaborated on the increased demand for differentiating premium experiences and increased focus on operational efficiency in mainstream cinema. Premium cinema is the primary growth driver for exhibitors aiming to keep the experience level high and seats filled. After all, there are 2000 - 3000 PLF (premium large format) screens worldwide today! In his presentation, Nico elaborated on how laser technology can help exhibitors execute on the key trends on premium experiences and operational efficiency. He also explained how laser offers best business case for premium theatres in terms of image quality, increase in frequency of audience visit and value for money.
Rajesh Patkar, Deputy General Manager, Christie Digital India elucidated the changing trends from lamp to laser phosphor to RGB laser and future of cinema illumination. He pointed out that while exhibitors have more choices than ever before, they need to analyze the cost, lifetime, screen size and image performance. Yusuf S Galabhaiwala - Galalite Screens, heading one of the oldest family-run businesses of India, shared his personal experience in the projection industry. He also talked about the factors that influence the screen selection.
Takeaway: While each panellist had his own opinion on the future of projection illumination technology, what emerged as one of the major challenges is the multitude of choices before the cinema exhibitors! Technology is forever evolving and cannot be future proofed! Cinema exhibitors need to take into account the cost and performance ratios. While China and India are seen as the emerging markets for projection sales today, the market dynamics and the characteristic features of these economies are very different from each other.
Adam MacDonald - Director, MasterImage 3D, emphasised the progressive nature of technology and explained the global penetration of 3D and its growth prospects.
Some Presentations Master Class on Cinema Sound Design Presenter: Samir Mistry - Application Engineer - Cinema Sound, Harman International In his informative and insightful presentation, Samir traced the history of cinema sound, audio standards, acoustics, screen, speakers and their installation, system alignment and the future outlook. The presentation touched upon the types of cinema and sound formats, system equalization standards and the factors affecting sound response. Besides outlining the acoustics requirement, Mr Mistry highlighted the screen selection criterion. He also presented in detail the technicalities of sound selection and installation.
