The global display systems market has been getting quite fervent, especially with Samsung installing its first ever cinema LED screen for public viewing. The entrant has received positive response from all corners. However, relatively traditional projector systems such as 2K, 4K or laser still seem to enjoy the goodwill of exhibitors. There could not have been a better time for the arrival of Sony's first 4K laser projector -- yet another entrant into the laser projection market. South Korea's CGV Cinemas opened Asia's largest IMAX Screen, measuring 31 meters across and 22.4 meters top to bottom at its Yongsan location in Central Seoul. All set to create a revolution in Large Format Cinema segment is EPIQ Cinema, a Premium Large Format offered by Qube Cinemas. The first installation of around 100ft width is soon expected in India. Indian economy underwent a transformation phase with the implementation of the new Goods and Services Tax (GST). After the initial hiccups in comprehending and implementing GST, the economy is settling down, two months into the taxation regime. On the other hand, cinema owners in Tamil Nadu went on strike as they were left in the lurch due to state government's local body tax. After the intervention of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the matter is apparently resolved for the time being. The 2nd edition of Big Cine Expo (2017), recently held at Chennai, was a grand success, making it world's second largest expo for cinema exhibition by total footfalls. The 2-day event had everything for cinema exhibitors and a lot of networking opportunities for the cinema exhibition ecosystem. After the success of 2017, Big Cine Expo 2018 will move to a much bigger and central city of India -- Mumbai (venue: Sahara Star Hotel 5-star property). TheatreWorld is once again the media partner at the major trade shows: KinoExpo (19-22 September), ExpoCine (27-29 September), AIMC - Australian International Movie Convention (8-12 October) and ShowEast (23-26 October). Enova's first solar power deal with Majid Al Futtaim Properties was signed on World Environment Day, the United Nations' annual initiative to promote sustainability.

A state-of-the-art viewing environment with wall-to-wall

The deal is set to cut the four malls' carbon dioxide emissions by 3,200 tons per year - the equivalent of taking 700 cars off the roads- and will see the technology installed at Dubai's Mall of the Emirates, City Centre Deira, City Centre Mirdif and City Centre Fujairah. Following City Centre Me'aisem and My City Centre Al Barsha, the first malls to be fitted with solar panels a year ago, this new agreement covering four more UAE malls strengthens Majid Al Futtaim's pioneering role in the region and is the first solar project to involve Enova.

Solar panels contain photovoltaic cells, which absorb energy from the sun and convert it into electricity. The power generated is then fed directly into the malls' electrical network. Under this deal, about 12,500 panels will be installed across the buildings, covering an area of 25,000 square metres, including 1,020 car ports. Feasibility studies are underway with a view to rolling the project out across other assets. The scheme will enable Majid Al Futtaim Properties to generate 6,000 MWhof electrical energy annually, earning it points with the LEED certification system (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), the globally recognised green building benchmark. Enova's CEO, Anne Le Guennec, said: "Every day throughout the Middle East, Enova helps firms achieve their best performance and

environmental targets, freeing them to concentrate on their core business activities. Our energy management solutions are based on a comprehensive package of services, including design, commissioning, strategy and long-term maintenance - and when parts eventually expire we'll take them away for recycling." Benefiting from the global experience of its parent company, Veolia, Enova is able to offer a holistic and circular solution for when the solar panels will need to be replaced after an expected lifespan of around 25 years. The French firm, which created Enova in 2002 in partnership with Majid Al Futtaim Ventures, has helped previous clients recycle worn parts from its renewable energy systems in compliance with environmental legislation such as the European Union's WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) directive, which requires solar panel importers and manufacturers to collect and process end-of-life equipment. FuadMansoorSharaf, Managing Director (UAE, Bahrain & Oman) Property Management, Shopping Malls for Majid Al Futtaim, said: "Investing in renewables aligns with Majid Al Futtaim's commitment to become a regional leader in environmental stewardship, set out in its ambitious Net Positive strategy and Renewable Energy White Paper. We want to lead by example by applying international best practices across our portfolio and have a positive impact on the communities we serve."

MBO Cinemas together with AAM Embraces Automated Operations Arts Alliance Media (AAM) together with the Goldenduck Group have announced that leading Malaysian exhibitor MBO Cinemas has fully deployed AAM's enterprise TMS software solution, Producer. MBO Cinemas is the first exhibitor in South East Asia to centralise all their operations at head office with Arts Alliance Media's Producer. From one central point at head office, MBO can monitor and manage all content, KDMs, reporting, and pre-show advertising and trailers. Mariam El Bacha, Director of Operations at MBO Cinemas, said of the deployment "Producer has revolutionised our operations. It allows us to control our cinema circuit in the way we want much more easily, and the improved visibility means we can resolve issues quickly and maintain our high customer service standards. Taking full advantage of Producer's automations means building our playlists is faster, more flexible, and more accurate." Producer is designed to control and monitor the status of all the sites in a circuit, displaying playback details in real-time and highlighting any upcoming issues for proactive resolution. Content can be managed remotely and pre-show packs of ads and trailers built from head office saving staff time at sites and reducing the possibility of human error. Since deploying Producer, MBO's content and monitoring operations have been handled by a single staff member at head office. Successfully

streamlining operations and automating sites' day to day tasks has afforded staff time to add value in other customer-facing areas. MBO Cinemas has been using AAM's Theatre Management System, Screenwriter, to manage content, playlists and scheduling on all 200 of their screens for four years. Upgrading to Producer extends and centralises that functionality, providing MBO with improved control and visibility across their circuit's operations. John Aalbers, CEO at Arts Alliance Media, added "MBO are one of our most forward-thinking customers. We are delighted that they have embraced the concept of full automation and centralised operations. This is clearly an emerging trend in Cinema focused on enabling superior accuracy and quality as well as more aggressive cost control."

"Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" is the new film by Luc Besson adapted from the sciencefiction comic strip series by Pierre Christin and Jean-Claude Mézières that inspired a whole generation of artists, writers and film-makers. In the 28th century, Valerian (Dane DeHaan) and Laureline (Cara Delevingne) are special spatio-temporal agents charged with keeping order throughout the human territories. On assignment from the Minister of Defence, the two undertake a mission to the extraordinary

intergalactic city of Alpha, an everexpanding metropolis where species from across the universe have converged over centuries to share knowledge, skills and culture. At the centre of Alpha is hiding a mysterious dark force, which threatens the peaceful existence of the City of a Thousand Planets. Meyer Sound LEOPARD "Exceeds the Ordinary" Tachikawa Cinema City is known throughout the Tokyo metro area for supporting its first-run feature showings with superior audio quality. In fact, patrons entering the largest screening room in the multi-theatre complex know immediately that an extraordinary sonic experience awaits them as new twin arrays of Meyer Sound LEOPARD line array loudspeakers for the left and right channels are in full view beside the screen. The improvement has been noted by audiences, and in the box office receipts. "We have gained a reputation for sonic realism beyond that which can be heard in other theatres," states Takeshi Toyama, head of the

planning office at Tachikawa Cinema City. "Our audience numbers were up 30% in 2015 over the previous year, and in 2016 the numbers extended even further. Of course, this is not due only to improving sound quality, but we have no doubt that the Meyer Sound system has proven its ability to add depth and subtlety to the cinema experience." The screen channels comprise left and right arrays of six LEOPARD line array loudspeakers flown under a 900-LFC low-frequency control element, with a hidden center array of eight LEOPARD loudspeakers also suspended under a single 900-LFC element. Additional LFE power comes from two 1100-LFC lowfrequency control elements, and 12 HMS-12 surround loudspeakers are deployed around the room perimeter. Four discreet MM-4XP loudspeakers enhance sonic detail for the rearmost seats. The system was supplied by ARTWIZ (formerly ATL) of Tokyo, the Meyer Sound dealer for Japan. "Our goal in choosing a LEOPARD system was to exceed the ordinary level of cinema sound," emphasizes Mr. Toyama. "We designed our sound system to precisely and faithfully reproduce the sound as recorded on the mixing stage." The visibly dominating LEOPARD arrays were a particular sensation during a recent re-screening of Mad Max: Fury Road, which features a scene with the heavily speaker-laden "Doof Wagon" roaring across the desert to the accompaniment of

aggressive rock music. "It was a huge success," recalls Mr. Toyama. "Fans were taking pictures of LEOPARD and 1100-LFC and uploading them to Twitter and Instagram." The new system was a staged installation, with the 1100-LFC elements arriving in 2015, the LEOPARD arrays installed in 2016, and the new HMS-12 surrounds completing the project. Studio A, the largest auditorium in the Cinema Two complex, seats 382 and also features a Sony SRX-R320 digital cinema projector and a 4.45 m x 10.5 m silver screen. Prior to the renovation, the audio system was anchored by Meyer Sound MTS-4A main loudspeakers supported by 650P subwoofers and UPJ-1P VariO loudspeakers as surrounds. The original Cinema City complex was opened in Tachikawa in 1994, with Cinema Two opening nearby the following decade. Cinema Two houses five theatres with a total seating capacity of 1,245.

INSPIRING CONSUMER EXPERIENCE TW-26

September-November 2017

• SPECIAL STORY • One of the well-known cinema chains world over, UCI Cinemas is a brand that focuses on customer experience. Carlos Marin, Managing Director, UCI Cinemas, has played a pivotal role in making it the largest multiplex cinema in Brazil. He will receive the "International Exhibitor of the Year Award" at ShowEast 2017. United Cinemas International (UCI Cinemas) is a brand of cinema, currently operating in Brazil, Austria, Germany, Italy and Portugal. In Brazil, UCI cinemas are owned by National Amusements. Customer experience is a major focus of this trusted brand. Carlos Marin, Managing Director, United Cinemas International (UCI), will receive this year's "International Exhibitor of the Year Award" at ShowEast. Marin will be presented with this special honor as a part of the International Awards Luncheon on October 24 at the Loews Miami Beach. Marin was born in Barcelona, Spain and graduated with a degree in Economics at the Universitat de Barcelona and also holds an MBA in Business Administration from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona.

He moved to Brazil in 1996 and became the Director of Finance at United Cinemas International. In 1998, he helped lead the opening of UCI's first multiplex and since then it has become the largest multiplex cinema in Brazil. In 2003, Marin was promoted to Managing Director and following his promotion in 2005; National Amusements took over the UCI's shares in Brazil. Since its arrival in Brazil, UCI has opened 23 multiplexes with 194 screens in 12 cities across the country: Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Recife, Fortaleza, Curitiba, São Luís, Campo Grande, Manaus, Ribeirão Preto, Salvador, Juiz de Fora e Belém. Running four of the seven highest sites in attendance in Brazil, UCI is

always searching for the best technologies and for more innovation. In 2001, UCI was responsible for the first digital screens in Brazil and in 2010, UCI partnered with Sony, to bring 4K technology in Brazil exclusively to UCI Cinemas. In 2011, UCI Brazil presented the first IMAX screen in Rio de Janeiro and incorporated a new concept to the company, the VIP Deluxe theaters, with special guest services, private lounges, luxury seats and a special menu. Currently UCI is the largest IMAX operator in Brazil and under Marin's leadership, UCI opened their first 4DX theater last June. Excerpts from an interview with Carlos Marin: Congratulations on being the recipient of the "International Exhibitor of the Year Award" at ShowEast! What does this recognition mean to you? Thank you very much. It means a huge motivation to continue improving the quality of my work every day. After 29 years in this business, it's a recognition for the team we have been building on over the years. National Amusements (NAI), our parent company, best owed its trust in me from day one. And my family always understood my passion for this industry and gave me the energy and inspiration to keep going.

• SPECIAL STORY • Tell us about UCI's presence and its screen count? The UCI Group, which comprises JV partnerships with Severiano Ribeiro and Orient groups, operates 194 screens in 23 sites located in 12 cities; seven of the cities among the top 10 most populated cities in Brazil! The highest concentration of the UCI business is in Rio de Janeiro, where our Head Office is based, as well as the UCI's flagship at NYCC's mall with 18 screens and 4000 seats (the most successful cinema in Brazil since its opening in 1999). The UCI operation is especially strong in three main cities in the North-East of the country (Salvador, Recife and Fortaleza) and also has very good operations in the São Paulo market. Since 1997, when UCI's first multiplex was unveiled, it has become one the largest multiplex cinema chain in Brazil. How do you see the transformation of the company? When I look back I cannot believe it's the same company. I still remember when we were looking for our first office space, hiring our first batch of employees and buying the first set of computers. Back then, the multiplex concept was completely new in a market operated only by Brazilian companies. To establish our business and build relationships was a challenge. The company's

TW-28

September-November 2017

transformation has been conditioned by the turbulences in the Brazilian economy. We have had to adapt to certain structural changes along the line. When UCI became a NAI's subsidiary in 2005, it was an inflexion point. The main expansion period of the company happened and the focus on the customer service brought more resources to prepare the company for the next transformation. Born and brought up in Spain and then moving to Brazil for work, how was your personal journey of understanding the nuances of a different country and its culture?

Moving to Brazil to work and live in a different culture was indeed a challenge. But I always saw it as an opportunity to learn and improve as a professional and an individual. Living without family in a new culture and country, I tried to seek as much information as possible about Brazilian market, its people and their business culture. This was a very important period. This is something that you have to live for yourself. Taking a retrospective look, Brazilian cinema industry has witnessed many ups and downs. How would you describe the present scenario of cinema and cinema exhibition? Just like cinema world over, the Brazilian film industry has gone through many challenges to get consistency in terms of commercial diversity. In the last few years, the content has concentrated on comedies. With growth and increase in shopping malls across the county, the screen count has increased year by year with the consequent rise in tickets sold. However, the economic crisis has slowed down the opening of new shopping malls as well as the new screens. But the market is still performing well and Brazilian exhibitors are introspecting their own investments in the existing operations to increase the level of profitability.

• SPECIAL STORY •

Tell us more about the Brazilian cinemagoers and their expectations. The one word to describe Brazilian cinemagoers is "enthusiastic". Brazilians are very enthusiastic and this reflects in their leisure and entertainment choices. One can experience the way the audience engage with the films inside the auditorium. As Brazil has a young population, it is common to see families going to the cinemas. Animation films and films based on comic characters do well in Brazil.

operation not forgetting the basics (projection and sound and seats quality as well as hygiene). We also focus on Large Format screens with IMAX and XPLUX (NAI's PLF auditoriums all equipped with immersive sound DOLBY Atmos); UCI DELUX auditoriums with reclining seats, exclusive lounge with food service that can be order inside the auditoriums; SUPER SEATS (extra large seats) in some rows of

conventional auditoriums, coffee shops and now the 4DX experience. The goal is to satisfy our customers with their preferred moviegoing experience for each moment. When it comes to technology, UCI has always been on the top of things - whether it's the largest IMAX operator in Brazil or opening the first 4DX theatre. What next can we expect from UCI?

Brazilian moviegoers are very curious and receptive to new technology and services. Social media is widely used as a medium to share cinema experience. When Brazilian moviegoers are given value for their money, they become loyal customers. What in your opinion is the USP of UCI? As part of the National Amusements, we pay attention to detail. For us, it is important to have a consistent

September-November 2017

• SPECIAL STORY • We would like to provide our customers all possible cinemagoing experiences. We want to make cinema a place where they look forward to spending time with their family. We can provide something that nobody has by improving the quality of projection using laser technology and creating a unique experience using virtual reality. These are the two aspects that UCI is working on. Tell us more about your expansion strategy. The organic growth will be slower until the growth of new shopping malls picks up again. In the meantime, a new site will be operational this year and some existing sites will have additional auditoriums, increasing the UCI screen count. We will be looking at opportunities that make sense for us in primary markets. UCI is not going to expand to get more market share without payback. There needs to be a healthy expansion to gear up for the consolidation of the market. In an industry that is booming with multiplexes, what could be the game changer in your opinion? I see two possible game changers. One is specific to Brazil i.e. an irrational increase in the level of

TW-30

September-November 2017

screens saturating some markets, which will impact the moviegoing experience. At global level, the game changer is the VOD and streaming companies. The reduction of the exhibition window in my opinion would be harmful to everyone in the long run.

As the Managing Director of UCI, what is your vision and mission for the company? It's the customers, employees and stakeholders who make a company. We need to build a company that is able to find the point of balance to satisfy them all!

location also boasts the first 4DX Screen X venue, which combines the 4DX technology, which employs moving chairs and wind, rain, fog and scent effects, with the panoramic three-screen 4DX technology. Another screen is dedicated to filmmaker PARK Chan-wook and will exclusively show arthouse fare. Part of the ticket sales for the theatre will go towards supporting the local independent film industry.

The screen is approximately five times larger than a standard theatre screen, measuring 31 meters across and 22.4 meters top to bottom. The IMAX projector beams an image that is about 50% brighter than normal venues and twice as sharp.

Michael's Green Paper Michael Karagosian speaks about the motion picture industry's transition to digital cinema, the most significant transition in motion pictures since the introduction of sound. In this issue, he answers few questions on HDR in cinema…

Questions and Answers About HDR in Cinema I was recently asked a few questions pertinent to the introduction of cinema HDR (High Dynamic Range). It reminded me that many cinema technologists walked in through the digital cinema door, with little history of how we got here. My lengthy response was a bit more than the editor was seeking, so I polished it up for posting here. Below are the questions, followed by my response: Question #1: If the switch from 35mm film to digital was characterized by open standards and DCI specifications, will it be the same for HDR? Question #2: As digital cinema approaches its first major wave of technology refresh, what is the Hollywood studio position with regards to HDR technology? Question #3: What is the role of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) Next Generation Cinema Display Committee in this next phase? I characterize the digital cinema transition differently, which is important to understanding my view on HDR. SMPTE and DCI played important roles in the transition from 35mm film to digital, but I would say that the primary forces in the

TW-38

September-November 2017

Coming to a cinema near you…one day Source: ICAS shoot by Revelations Entertainment

transition were the studio will to subsidize the transition, and Texas Instrument's extensive effort in developing projection technology that met artistic approval. In fact, TI's role was quite important, as it was TI's license of its color technology to multiple projector manufacturers that ensured color consistency in the field. DCI played an important role during the transition, which can be divided into two parts: the need for studios to jointly develop the means to secure digital content, and the need to create a shared technology specification that would guarantee a secondary equipment market. Supportable evidence for a secondary market was necessary for banks worldwide to finance approximately US$7B of equipment that didn't previously exist. Most people know what a virtual print fee

subsidy is, but it's not widely understood that compliance with the DCI spec was written into every VPF agreement. This not only ensured proliferation of the spec to the benefit of distributors, but no less importantly, it created an equipment market worthy of investment. The situation for HDR is quite different. Cinema HDR is not positioned to disrupt the market with the wholesale replacement of projection technology. The digital transition is behind us: studios no longer subsidize the purchase of digital equipment, and compliance to the DCI spec is no longer tied to equipment financing. Without money behind a new specification, the introduction of cinema HDR will be incremental to the work already done, and subject to market forces. Looking back in time, the cinema market today looks a lot more like

• TECHNOLOGY • the cinema market of the 80's and 90's than that of the digital transition. In the 80's and 90's, technology companies were in command. It was technology providers who invested in and brought new capabilities to cinema. I can't think of a case from that era where a shared specification or standard was required. That doesn't mean there weren't complaints stemming from the lack of standards, but complaints didn't get in the way of market success for the technology companies. The best example of this trend in today's market is from Dolby Laboratories, which is one of the few technology companies in cinema with market DNA from the 80's and 90's. Dolby successfully introduced Atmos technology to the digital cinema market, without the upfront need for new industry specifications and standards. Where special software was required in digital servers, Dolby went directly to the server companies to license them. To be sure, there is now a standards effort to ensure efficient distribution among competitive technologies, but momentum for a standard came well after the successful introduction of Atmos. HDR cinema, however, can't be so cavalier. It's possible to create private ecosystems for HDR, of which more than one exists today. But a competitive market must exist for sales of HDR technology to grow, and this requires standards. Unlike standards and specifications generated to enable the digital transition, those for HDR cinema will be driven primarily by technology providers. This perspective should help to understand my answer to the second question about how the content industry views cinema HDR. In the digital transition, studios were guaranteed to benefit from the substantial reduction in distribution costs. Therefore, it made sense to write big checks to subsidize it. HDR cinema, however, does not present a

savings of any kind. More likely, it will increase production and distribution costs. It's unrealistic, therefore, to expect studios to write big checks to bring HDR to cinema. Going back to my earlier analogy, HDR will come to cinema in the market-driven manner that new technologies came to cinema in the 80's and 90's. Likewise, the production and distribution of HDR cinema content will be driven by box office. That leads to the third question about the efforts ongoing in the ASC. The ASC's Technology Committee recently reorganized as the ASC Motion Imaging Technology Council. There are numerous committees in the Council, and I cochair the Next Generation Cinema Display (NGCD) Committee. We changed the committee's name a few years ago to include "Display" in anticipation of the emergence in cinema of HDR-capable direct LED display technology. Cinema HDR will be driven by market forces, but there are unique values in cinema that must be preserved which cannot be left to market forces. Preservation of values requires effort, and there is an urgency to this, driven by a "grand alignment" of market forces. Virtual print fee subsidies are coming to an end, freeing up equipment tied up in CDOs. Maintenance costs are rising for older equipment, setting up an equipment refresh cycle. The HDR format is emerging, with HDRequipped sets rapidly taking over sales in the home entertainment market. And new technology is emerging in cinema that can deliver an HDR experience. The market is ripe for new technology, which will invite a new wave of manufacturers to the market. The digital cinema transition benefited immensely from a dominant technology provider that licensed competitive manufacturers. But the industry will not have such a benefactor to rely on for HDR. So other institutions must stand up if the high standards of cinema are to be preserved.

The mission of the ASC NGCD Committee is to critically influence image quality and consistency in the field. A year ago, we released the ASC Cinema Display Evaluation Plan & Test Protocol, available online, to guide a study of dynamic range from the artistic view. But the industry pace has picked up, and we are widening our scope. With support from EFILM and other industry organizations, we are assembling a collection of content for evaluation on a cinema-sized HDR display later this year. We will evaluate the influence on artistic values of peak white, frame rate, dynamic range, dynamic luminance adjustment (if present), limited resizing, and compressed bit rate with HDR content. The output of this effort will be to issue appropriate recommendations. Special attention must be given to the preservation of color consistency as new manufacturers enter the market. The color consistency required of cinema has no parallel in home entertainment. Design guidance and a vetting process is needed for new cinema display products, and the ASC will likely play a role. Organizing manufacturers will also be an important step towards the successful introduction of HDR to cinema. Such an entity would be home to ASC recommendations and a body for driving standards and compliance. Formation of such an entity is beyond the scope of the ASC, but the ASC is working with manufacturers to explore the formation of a manufacturer's organization.

To go with the stunning video technology within the 'SUPER S' theatre of Lotte Cinema, Samsung has paired its Cinema LED Screen with state-of-the-art audio technologies from JBL by HARMAN. This integration includes powerful speakers bordering the screen, proprietary audio processing technology, and JBL's Sculpted Surround system, producing an unparalleled sight and sound experience the way the content creators intended. As demands within the cinema space evolve, Samsung's Cinema LED Screen offers the versatility to expand services to meet a wider range of audience needs. The display maintains its advanced presentation capabilities in a range of dark and ambient lighting conditions. This flexibility makes the Cinema LED

Screen ideal for venues wishing to use their theatre space for corporate events, concerts, sports event viewing and gaming competitions. "'SUPER S' theatre is a new paradigm of movie screening," said Wonchun Cha, Lotte Cinema CEO. "We look forward to working with Samsung to introduce new, high-quality technology to the movie industry in the future, and we are excited to drive customer satisfaction through an improved viewing environment that brings a variety of content to life."

Prior to its commercial debut, Samsung ran the Cinema LED Screen through a series of the industry's most rigorous tests to validate its performance and presentation. In May 2017, the Cinema LED Screen became the first product to achieve full compliance with the highlyesteemed Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) theatre technology standards prior to its commercial release. This certification acknowledges the display's ability to showcase the complete color spectrum with unaltered accuracy.

ShowEast features a range of exclusive product presentations and screenings from both Independent and Major Hollywood studios to help you make important programming decisions for the fourth quarter box office. Powerhouse seminars offer valuable insight from top executives on the latest industry trends and concerns; while the EXPO experience offers delegates a glance at the latest and newest technologies, entertainment, services, comforts, and conveniences to make their theatres must-attend destinations.
