As digital cinema established itself further in 2017, technology partners have become more aggressive on control of the content and revenue management. The whole idea of engaging with cinema has changed. With cinema emerging as the biggest source of entertainment for public, technology is more geared up than before to handle its scope. Social media has played a significant role for the entertainment industry by promoting the cinema on various channels and gaining more number of audiences. On the other hand, social media is also diverting the viewership towards mobile entertainment. Given this scenario, the one big challenge before the cinemas is to make the big screen experience more lively and joyful. Interestingly, there's a huge lineup of 3D movies and topnotch summer releases in coming weeks. India is still working on the GST glitches and it is likely to take a while to come out of it. Apart from GST by Government of India, the entertainment industry in Tamil Nadu is also subject to the local body entertainment tax (LBET) of 8% fixed by the state government. This makes Tamil Nadu the only state to collect LBET. Indian multiplex screen count continues to increase aggressively and most of the single-screens are being converted into multi-screens. The country's biggest cinema chain PVR Cinemas reaches the 600-screen milestone and looks forward to providing enhanced experiences to the audience. UFO Moviez and Qube Cinema merger is a big news for the industry in pan-India market. The combined entity will have 7,300 screens across India with a seating capacity of 95.5 million per week. UFO Moviez will have over 98 per cent market share post merger in terms of virtual print fee (VPF) revenue. The 4DX cinema concept uses a combination of effects such as chair motion, vibration, scents, water, wind, lighting effects, and fog to create an immersive cinema experience never seen before in Australia. Hive Creative was tasked with producing launch and pre-launch creative, plus strategic development of the Village Cinemas/4DX collaborative brand to position it as a memorable, shared cinema experience and the front-runner in innovative cinema technology in Australia. Filmed in front of a green screen and complete with fighter pilot suits, a wind machine and real Village Cinemas customers thanks to Kamio.com.au, the 4DX TVC succinctly represents the best features of the 4DX experience and the cinema-goer’s ability to truly ‘feel the film’. Michael Cain, senior creative at Hive Creative, said: “Our aim was to capture the energy, excitement and emotion that 4DX adds to films and show customers just how immersive the experience really is. “We wanted to take them on the 4DX thrill ride using a volatile mix of high tech effects, old school techniques, custom sound design and, most importantly, fun.”

The Ushio Xenon Lamp Model DXL65BA3 has been tested and approved by IMAX for use in the IMAX GEN-3 Projection Systems. The lamp features longer average life-time & warranty and improved lumen maintenance with no compromise on initial brightness. Obvious advantage for the cinemas is an extended maintenance cycle and more lumens on the screen over life. Its warranty life is 700 hours.

Dav Motee, business director at Hive Creative, added: “Our team have done a great job showcasing the 4D entertainment technology. Village Cinemas have a long history in innovation, and that’s not going to change moving forward. “As their agency, we feel it’s our responsibility to support new ideas, concepts and techniques to advertise and communicate these great offerings. 4DX is just one of many brands that you can now experience only at Village Cinemas.”

Cinépolis Plaza Satélite Becomes First "All-laser" Multiplex in Mexico Powered by Barco Projectors Digital Cinema leader Barco and Cinépolis, the fourth largest cinema chain in the world, have partnered again to equip its new Plaza Satélite theatre in Mexico City with Barco's Smart Laser projection, delivering the best overall movie presentation quality in Mexico while operating at a significantly lower cost than possible with traditional xenonpowered projectors. Cinepolis partnered with Barco in the early 2000s to convert its cinemas to digital projection and has been pioneering its new technologies ever since, becoming the first exhibitor in Latin America to bring laserilluminated movies and the Barco Escape immersive movie format to moviegoers. It recently expanded this long-standing cinema partnership with Barco to help grow its footprint in Mexico and around the world. Now, recognizing the opportunity to further enhance the quality of its movie showings with laser projection, Cinépolis made the decision to equip its entire flagship theater in Mexico City with Barco laser projectors. "Barco has always been a wonderful cinema partner, offering the very best technology and service so we can offer a superior moviegoing experience to our guests," comments Gabriel Morales Becker, Digital Cinema Strategy Director for Cinépolis. Christie Projectors Power the Screens for Muvix Christie, the world leader in creating and sharing the best visual and audio experiences, announced that it has signed an agreement with Muvix, Chile's newest multiplex chain, to equip 40 theatres throughout the country with Christie's digital cinema projectors over the next three years. The Muvix brand is a new one belonging to the Syem Group, a family-run enterprise operating in the cinema exhibition sector in Chile under Cine Star, which has four multiplexes in Chile and is the country's only chain owned by Chilean capital. While Cine Star focuses on small multiplexes with no more than four screens in small cities and towns with populations of between 40,000 and 70,000 inhabitants, Muvix, will be located in the country's major commercial centres, improving and renewing the industry's current overall resources in the country. Muvix's mission is to be a major player in the cinema industry and to compete on an equal footing with the big multinationals operating in Chile. However, the new exhibitor also has its sights sets outside its home country, with plans to expand into other South American countries, starting with Peru. Sebastián Martínez, Muvix's CEO and founder, explained: "We were well conversant with Christie projectors because, as a family group, we have been operating in this industry for more than 60 years and we had already used its 35 millimetre projectors. We have excellent references for the brand, and the technical team we are putting together are coming from different exhibitors in the industry, many of them with prior experience working with Christie." Martínez added: "For Cine Star and Muvix, choosing Christie as its projection partner was not a decision we took lightly. That's because we

are currently immersed in a process of expansion of both our chains, so it was really important to have a technological partner that we could rely on in the long term. Christie demonstrated a much greater interest and involvement in our expansion process than other projection brands. We know that its products are the leaders in terms of quality; and we visited its factory in Canada to take a look at its production processes and what it has in the pipeline, and that helped make up our minds to work with Christie." The first of Muvix's multiplexes to be equipped with Christie cinema projectors will be located in the city of Punta Arenas in the south of Chile, which is scheduled to open its doors this coming December. It will have four screens and around 700 reclining seats, making it the biggest and most modern complex in the city. More specifically, this multiplex will be equipped with projector workhorses Christie CP2208, and CP2215 and the CP2230.

We know that the chain is committed to delivering the best standards in projection in order to stand out from its competitors, and we are convinced that with our products and service they will be able to give their audiences that added value".

Barco Achieves Milestone of 100 All-laser Cinema Multiplexes Installed Worldwide Global cinema technology leader Barco has set another record for cinema laser projector deployments, this time for all-laser multiplexes, in which an exhibitor outfits every auditorium with either a Barco Flagship Laser or Smart Laser projector. An all-laser cinema allows owners to fully realize the costsavings and operational efficiencies that only a standardized platform can offer. With no lamps or lenses to buy, stock and replace, exhibitors can focus their resources elsewhere to further enhance the entertainment value of their offering for guests. "Once we conduct a business case analysis, movie theater owners can quickly see the benefits our laser projectors offer with regard to high performance and low total cost of ownership," comments Wim Buyens, Senior Vice President and General Manager Entertainment for Barco. "Combined with superior image quality and brightness, our solutions empower exhibitors to offer their guests the best moviegoing experience possible." Barco offers a diverse portfolio of 16 laser projectors delivering excellent sustainability from the compact, economical Smart Laser SLP series with low-cost, simple operations, to the robust Flagship Laser LHC series, offering the highest contrast and stunning brightness for higher-ticket movie presentations on premium

screens, including 3D. With the Smart Care program, exhibitors can enjoy 100 percent peace of mind with 10 years of guaranteed light output, ensuring stable and superior image quality over a projector's lifetime. Kinepolis, a long-term Barco customer, opened the first "all-Barco laser" multiplex in Europe more than one year ago in Breda, the Netherlands. The ten-screen multiplex features one Barco Flagship Laser and nine Smart Laser projectors. "Visitor numbers have been exceeding our expectations since Day One, which is fantastic," says Vicky Vekemans, theater manager for Kinepolis. Customer satisfaction surveys also clearly show that visitors prefer laser-illuminated projection. With regard to cost savings, laser projection is helping Kinepolis cut energy consumption by 30 percent. The exhibitor has since opened all-laser cinemas in three additional locations. Kinepolis Group manages 49 cinemas - 500 screens spread across Belgium, the Netherlands, France, Spain, and Switzerland. Other theater circuits rapidly followed, with many deploying alllaser multiplexes within the past year: National Amusements, Inc., CinemaCity, The GRINN FILM multiplex, Cinesystem Cinemas, CMS (Cinemex), Megabox Korea, and Reel Cinemas, to name a few.

Saudi Arabia May Lift Ban on Cinemas Saudi Arabia plans to start issuing tourist visas “soon” as the

ultra-conservative kingdom seeks to attract international visitors in a radical overhaul of its oil-dependent economy. Tourism is seen as a major driver of growth as the kingdom attempts to wean itself off its dependence on petrodollars amid a protracted oil slump. Alcohol, cinemas and theatres are still banned in the kingdom, an absolute monarchy and one of the world’s most conservative countries. But authorities in recent months have sought to project a moderate image with a string of reforms, including the decision allowing women to drive from next June. The kingdom is also expected to lift a public ban on cinemas and has encouraged mixed-gender celebrations — something seldom seen before.

New Q-SYS for Cinema Interface from QSC

QSC, LLC announced the new DCIO (Digital Cinema Input/Output) for their popular Q-SYS network and control platform for cinema. The DCIO provides a simple and costeffective way to route inputs from the projector IMB and alternate content sources to a Q-SYS Core over Q-LAN, QSC's network technology. "For over ten years, Q-SYS has been used extensively in many types of commercial applications, including airports, meeting spaces, sports venues," says Barry Ferrell, Senior Vice President and Chief Strategy Officer for QSC. "Increasingly, Q-SYS is becoming more common in cinemas too, as a way of optimizing and monitoring sound system performance. But the real power of Q-SYS is in its capability to control, monitor, and manage many other systems within the theatre complex. The new DCIO, combined with our Core 110c and Core 510c processors, makes Q-SYS an affordable option for every room in a cinema complex, even smaller 5.1/7.1 rooms, since multiple rooms can share a single Core." The DCIO accepts a variety of inputs including AES3, mic/line, and HDMI with Dolby Audio™ (featuring Dolby Digital Plus™ and Dolby® Surround 7.1) and DTS-HD® decoding. It also includes outputs for HI/VI and a booth monitor. Four relays are available to control external devices such as dimmers, masking, etc.

AMC Theatres Selects Arts Alliance Media for TMS Refresh Arts Alliance Media (AAM) announced that AMC Theatres, the largest movie exhibition company in the world, has selected Arts Alliance Media's Screenwriter Theatre Management System (TMS) to manage approximately 2,600 digital cinema screens in the USA. Screenwriter will provide the foundation for AMC to achieve greater automation of its digital cinema operations. The end of VPF (Virtual Print Fee) programs heralds the beginning of a technology refresh in cinema. It enables exhibitors to take a fresh look at how cinema software has advanced since the early days of digital. AAM has continued to invest heavily in the evolution of its software solutions of which one key element is an advanced TMS that is ready for the needs of the next decade. "AAM and AMC share a very similar vision for the future of digital cinema, so it was no surprise that they could deliver what we needed a solution that undertakes the core tasks of a TMS but also offers significant additional value and provides the foundations for future innovation", said Mark Latimer, Vice President, Sight and Sound at AMC. "Screenwriter gives us the immediate ability to optimize our digital cinema operations and drive increased efficiencies, while providing a platform for future innovations." Screenwriter is the world's most widely deployed TMS with over

75 million shows successfully delivered to screens over the past year alone. A quality TMS is a key component in delivering a high quality customer experience time and time again. The automation a TMS provides means that human error is eliminated and customer satisfaction is maximised whilst revenue loss minimised. John Aalbers, CEO of Arts Alliance Media said "It is terrific to be entering into this technology partnership with AMC. Their ambitious vision for how software solutions can enable future cinema innovation means they are a perfect partner for AAM. Our team is really looking forward to this project and ensuring that AMC quickly maximises the benefits. There is a lot we can do together to support AMC now and in the years ahead." Screenwriter will give AMC complete visibility and control over content, KDMs (Key Delivery Messages) and real-time playback information from all screens, meaning any problems can be spotted and resolved quickly and easily. The software also supports integrations with a range of external systems, including point of sale systems and third-party advertising providers, to enable AMC to streamline processes for maximum efficiency. This deal expands Arts Alliance Media's software footprint to around 40,000 cinema screens worldwide, and is the company's first large-scale TMS deal in North America.

USHIO Europe Heavily Investing into the Future of Speciality Lighting USHIO Poland officially opened the doors to its new factory in Pass, just outside of Warsaw last month. The new building has a production area of 5,000 square meters and dwarfs its predecessor which housed its production lines in just 2,000 square meters of space. It is home to a total of two production lines primarily manufacturing Metal Halide (MH) and High Pressure Sodium (HPS) lamps as part of the TOPFLOOD and HORTURION series; both trademarks of and sold by BLV Licht-und Vakuumtechnik GmbH; a member of the USHIO Europe Group. The investment signifies USHIO's strong and dedicated commitment to the horticulture business. By the substantially increased production capacities, USHIO is prepared to meet the demands of the growing global market and to explore future potential within the sector. New farming technologies, including the growing trend toward urban farming and a professionalisation of the horticulture business outside of Europe offer a plethora of opportunity for the company. In a bid for maximum efficiency and streamlined processes, the entire production is consolidated over just one floor space, facilitating optimal production conditions and further refining the logistics process. The new operation now enables even shorter delivery times to customers and greater efficiency overall. Furthermore, the new set-up and investment focuses heavily upon stringent quality control, spearheaded by a dedicated team to ensure premium quality is delivered to customers from the outset. The factory opening was marked with a celebratory ceremony attended by Mr. Satoru Takahashi; General Council of the Japanese Embassy in Poland, Mr. Marek Ksiazek; Vice Mayor of Blonie City together with Mr. Kenji Hamashima;

The new factory comes after a recent name change for the lighting manufacturer, previously known as Natrium since its inception in 1998. This program was designed to provide an upgrade path from legacy 3D cinema hardware systems from other manufacturers to the latest-generation 3D cinema hardware systems from Volfoni. The Volfoni Upgrade Program provides special incentives for upgrading from

legacy 3D hardware systems to Volfoni's latest 3D hardware systems. The manufacturers included in the program are: MasterImage, Dolby and XpanD. "We see a tremendous demand for this program - as exhibitors look to upgrade their legacy systems to the latest-generation 3D systems. "The new program allows new and existing customers to upgrade these legacy systems with special incentives from Volfoni." "The launch of the Volfoni Upgrade Program demonstrates Volfoni's commitment to exhibitors and to support them with them with new technology. Volfoni's new 3D cinema systems are engineered to have a lower total cost of ownership, have higher LEF performance, which delivers brighter 3D projections for audiences, and are backed by multiyear warranties with guaranteed parts availability," said Francois Inizan, Global Head of Sales for Volfoni. "The time is right to upgrade your legacy 3D cinema systems to the latest technology." The Volfoni Upgrade Program is a limited time offer, running from September through the end of the year 2017. Volfoni's 3D cinema business unit continues its growth momentum in the marketplace across multiple regions with significant projects announced or to-be-announced in different geographies. This announcement follows the recent announcement of Volfoni expanding their leadership team with the appointment of a new Chief Marketing Officer.

EclairColor technology was praised by moviegoers in an audience survey conducted in France last month. The study performed by an independent body, L'Observatoire de la Satisfaction, revealed 97.3% of moviegoers who attended the screening of a film in EclairColor intend to repeat the experience and over two thirds will be recommending it to their family and friends. Spectators spontaneously mentioned the beauty of the images, stating they are of superior quality, more colourful and brighter in comparison with a standard image.

D-BOX Collaborates with Ster-Kinekor Theatres in South Africa

Sony's First HDR Ready 4K Laser Projectors

D-BOX Technologies Inc, a world leader in immersive motion cinema seating technology and Ster-Kinekor, a division of Primedia (Pty) Ltd., the largest cinema exhibitor on the African continent, announced an agreement to install D-BOX high-fidelity motion seats in four auditoriums. Situated in Johannesburg (Rosebank Mall and Mall of Africa), Cape Town (Cavendish Square), and Durban (Gateway Shopping Mall), the theatres will cater to a growing number of movie-goers who are looking for premium entertainment experiences.

The giant electric motorized projection screens are available in all offered gain levels as well as in nonperf, cinema (standard) perf, and microperf so the soundstage can be placed behind the screen similar to premier movie theatres.

Sony's first 4K phosphor laser cinema projectors have arrived.

With considerable success on nearly 650 screens in more than 35 countries and a growing fan base, this agreement is one more step in their plans to build on the global presence of the D-BOX brand.

Audiences will be thrilled by ultraclear speckle free images in true 4K, now with a stunning 10,000:1 average contrast ratio - great for presenting in HDR with no extra equipment or costly licenses needed. The laser light source maintains consistent brightness levels over a 20,000 hour operating life with effectively no maintenance, saving on the costs and hassle of frequent lamp changes.

"This is our first venture in South Africa, so it's a great honour to collaborate with a prestigious and innovative exhibitor like SterKinekor" says Claude Mc Master, President and CEO of D-BOX. "As we see it, these new auditoriums are more proof that movie-goers all over the world are looking for unique entertainment experiences."

Naturally there's a choice of 4K laser solutions from Sony for every size of cinema. The SRX-R815P offers a generous 15,000 lumens brightness for presentation on smaller and medium screens. It's partnered by the SRX-R515DS dual projection system that delivers an impressive 30,000 lumens - ideal for presentation in 2D and 3D on PLF screens.

One of the attributes that makes DBOX so valuable is the intelligent flexibility of their seating configuration because it can be adjusted as business grows. This makes D-BOX the perfect solution for theatres of all sizes, particularly exhibitors like Ster-Kinekor that are focused on long-term growth. While this is the first foray into South Africa for D-BOX, it is driving the company to explore new opportunities that will bring the immersive experience to more markets in this part of the world and build long term, sustainable revenue for exhibitors.

From starting out with an original concept, we have grown from a 5-man team working in an apartment to a multi-national corporation with 13 offices and 29 service depots that spanned across 4 continents. GDC started by investing and building the first Hollywood approved digital cinemas in China in 2002 when China's boxoffice in early 2000 was smaller than that of Hong Kong. In our 18-year journey, GDC never stops innovating and dreaming; we produced the first digitally mastered Chinese movie for our digital cinemas in China. We successfully made the same attempt in India and Korea

between 2003 and 2004. We built and installed the first fully digitalized cinema multiplexes equipped with TMS ("Theatre Management System") in Singapore in 2004, and duplicated the same in China in 2006. Today, GDC is the largest supplier of media servers and TMS in Asia-Pacific and the second largest in the world. We are also one of the largest providers of digital cinema one-stop solution and service in the world. We achieved this by adhering to four key business principles: continually remaining focused on developing innovative products to exceed our customers' expectation; providing a one-stop solution and service to fulfill customers' need; extending our reach by finding new markets for our current products and services; and most important of all - listening to customers and understanding their needs.

What is GDC's market position in terms of digital cinema servers? With the largest installed base across key markets such as China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, GDC is the market leader in the Asia-Pacific region. On a global level, we are the second largest manufacturer and provider of digital cinema servers and TMS providing reliable, cost-effective products and prompt customer service to 28 of the top 35 exhibition companies in the world. Can you tell us more about how things have changed since the launch of the innovative immersive sound media server with a built-in DTS:X decoding and cinema processor (the GDC Immersive Sound Solution)? The award-winning GDC Immersive Sound Solution, which comprises the SX-4000 Standalone IMB with built-in DTS:X decoder and the advanced XSP-1000 cinema processor, was premiered at CinemaCon 2016. Delivering realistic, rich, immersive sound, this total audio solution has become a game-changer for audiences around the globe. By enabling a high-quality audio experience at a price point that allows exhibitors worldwide to affordably install immersive sound in auditoriums of any size, GDC has installed more than 500 DTS:X screens to date, with more than 300 in the pipeline over the next two years. GDC's SX-4000 is the first digital media server or IMB that equipped with an object-based immersive sound decoder with overwhelming support of movies from Hollywood and regional distributors. In two years, more than 100 blockbusters from Hollywood and regional distributors are released to cinemas equipped with SX-4000 media servers. We are also pleased to achieve another world's first in 2016 where a number of cinema multiplexes equipped all their auditoriums with SX-4000 to provide DTS:X immersive audio to the movie-goers.

What do you think are the key factors that have helped GDC solutions succeed so spectacularly in Asia? There are several factors but the single most important factor is our research and product development capability. We brought several firsts in the cinema technology. In 2001, GDC showcased and installed the world's first media servers with 100% software audiovisual decoder to significantly reduce the cost of media server. We studied and continuously study the workflow of cinema multiplexes as well as the cinema eco-system from mastering to screening of the movies. We continuously find ways to make the workflow more efficient and reliable. Before the arrival of Hollywood "DCI" standard, in 2004, GDC went ahead to offer and subsequently built the world's first completely digitalized cinema multiplex with its TMS. The development of TMS has significantly reduced the need of manpower enabling China to build cinema multiplex at cut-throat speed. More recently, we partnered with Samsung to build the world's first LED cinemas; this is the first time where direct view technology is approved by Hollywood DCI and used in the commercial cinema. We also developed the first media server that has built-in objectbased immersive audio decoder such as DTS:X as early as 2015 (two years ahead of our closest competitor), and

subsequently built cinema multiplexes in 2016 whereby all the auditoriums were equipped with DTS:X audio. These are just some of the examples of GDC's enormous focus in developing products that matter to the cinema industry. Top global exhibitors choose GDC for devotion to digital innovation and product reliability. Apart from manufacturing hardware and developing software for digital cinemas, GDC also emphasizes providing value-added services to customers. For example, GDC partnered with China Film Group to run a network operations centre ("NOC") in Beijing to provide 24-hour, real-time remote monitoring services for digital cinema systems in China. The other factor worth mentioning is GDC's willingness to invest our earnings to grow the cinema business across the four continents. GDC has

invested and financed the transformation of cinemas from analogue (35mm film) to digital cinema in various countries. In 2006, the company partnered with China Film Group to transform almost 1,000 screens into digital cinemas. Today, more than half of China's 50,000+ digital cinemas use GDC products. The digitalization project in 2006 became the catalyst that expanded China's movie industry to become the world's second-largest movie market, with box office revenues reaching more than US$8 billion in 2016. Our technology marked the start of the Chinese digital cinema revolution. We provide GDC solutions to top exhibitors in the world. We are No. 1 consistently in Asia, year after year, and No. 2 in the world. GDC products can be found in one out of three cinemas globally. With a passion for building and designing the most advanced solutions for the digital cinema industry, GDC regularly participates in various tradeshows while showcasing its groundbreaking products and services. One such event where the media and technology merge annually is at the CineAsia - a global gathering of the movie industry's top players, including production studios, technology providers, theatre owners and movie celebrities. GDC shall present another innovative product, namely Cinema Automation 2.0 ("CA2.0") which removes the existing hall-to-hall operation bondage. CA2.0 shall provide an online media server

• SPECIAL STORY • capable of storing and screening more than 1,000 DCP (i.e. DCI standard movies) to each and every auditorium. CA2.0 moves a step closer to complete the automation of the cinema workflow except the need to program the POS for the day-to-day screening of movies. We are excited to change the way the cinema operates thus bringing more savings and revenues to the exhibitors. The GDC Theatre Management System is Number 1 across India. What can we expect to see next from GDC in India? India is the world's largest producer of movies for theatrical distribution. More importantly, watching movies in cinema is an important part of India culture. GDC has always been passionate to developing the technologies for cinema that help to minimize the operating expenses and improve the screening quality. This is made possible with highly automated process from the ingest of content to the screening of various movies for the entire cinema multiplex. GDC's TMS and cinema enterprise software have helped to automate the distribution of screen advertisements, keys and cinema operation. At CineAsia, GDC is excited to launch the new generation of cinema automation products referred to as "CA2.0" to completely eliminate the storage constraint of today's digital cinema. With CA2.0,

only a centralized server is need for the entire multiplex that can host more than 1,000 movies. These 1,000 movies are available to each and every screen of the entire multiplex without the painstaking process of transferring content from one auditorium to the other. CA2.0 is perfectly suited for Indian cinema industry because of its vast number of movies and moviegoers. The automated programming feature of CA2.0 also attempts to satisfy the movie-goers by meeting the needs of "What to watch", "When to watch" and "Where to watch", hereby referred to as three Ws. You will see GDC spending time and efforts in transforming the cinema to adapt to the new generation of movie-goers who are so adapted to the three Ws. Of all the products and technologies that GDC has developed, which one would you say has been the biggest gamechanger in the world of digital cinema? That's a fascinating question, and I promise you the answer will just be as fascinating! We recently introduced CA2.0, an integrated

centralized storage and playback system designed to manage content storage and playback, show scheduling, power supply and screening quality. This system is a game-changer in that it reduces content ingestion by more than 90% (for a multiplex with more than 10 screens), increases playback reliability over 10 times and stores over 30 times more content (over 1,000 DCP) for each and every auditorium. It's the first-ever solution that is capable of playback of content to more than 10 screens from a centralized server to each and every media server in a multiplex. In addition, CA2.0 offers exhibitors the ability to eliminate the complicated procedure of preparing or editing show playlists (SPLs) through AutoSPL Generation, which saves time by handling SPLs with machine intelligence. Furthermore, the system intelligently turns the power supply on or off for cinema equipment and manages the screening quality by smart testing and analysis of luminance, chromaticity and sound pressure levels, performing tasks automatically and instantaneously. CA2.0 also revolutionizes the way in which cinemas can operate in the digital age by offering storage for more than 1000 (DCP) movies. Just imagine the tremendous flexibility in terms of programming content. CA2.0 is truly a revolutionary product that has not been seen in the industry. It also removes the biggest headache in the industry to manage broken harddisk drives and RAID rebuilding at each and every auditorium. Our new generation of media server is equipped with cache memory without the need of harddisk drives and it works seamlessly with CA2.0 to ingest, store and plays more than a thousand movies from a central storage server.

• SPECIAL STORY • GDC was recognized as the "Innovative Technology of the Year" by the largest cinema trade fair in India, Big Cine Expo 2017. How did it feel? I was deeply honored to receive this award with the GDC team. To be recognized by one's industry peers for working on something as important as the cinema technology of the future is very special to me. Cinema technology has always been my passion but most importantly, the award recognized and re-affirmed the importance of a team effort. While many organizations have the power and resources to influence innovation, it's the individual talents we possess that drive GDC ever higher. It is truly an honor to lead such a great organization of unique individuals who continually innovate and experiment to come up with new ideas and drive innovation for the advancement of the cinema industry. What new developments can the cinema exhibition industry expect to see from GDC in 2018? For exhibitors, the continued evolution of digital cinema innovation has resulted in seemingly endless options and technologies. And we don't expect this trend to stop anytime soon or when the market is changing. In fact, GDC will continue to work with the cinema exhibition industry to introduce even more innovations, especially during a time of transformation such as now. However, just because something is new doesn't necessarily mean it's innovative. We are guided by two rules: technology must either increase revenue or decrease cost - otherwise, it's not innovative. Moreover, the mark of true innovation is usefulness. True innovation is born out of necessity and is therefore useful in meeting a real need. The industry can count on GDC to introduce solutions that will meet their real needs as the industry is evolving. GDC also studies the change of lifestyle of the new generation of

As the Founder, Chairman and CEO of GDC, what are your goals and vision for the company?

The second thing I focus on every day is making our culture and values a part of the company's DNA. I learned many years ago that culture and values are of utmost importance to success. Culture and values provide the foundation upon which everything else is built. They are arguably our most important competitive advantage, and something that has grown to define us. It's one thing to change an industry. It's another to do it in our own distinctive way with innovation, openness, honesty, excellence and intelligent risk-taking.

I often remind myself, and have articulated to staff on multiple occasions, that I'm primarily guided by our mission statement and culture of innovation. I believe in that even more so today. FEW TOPICS DISCUSSED

Developing Retail & F&B Trends in Cinema

Overview: Panelists: Rajeev Chakrabarti - CMO, Inox Leisure Devang Sampat - Director, Strategic Initiatives, Cinepolis Rahul Puri - MD, Mukta A2 Cinemas Dina Mukherjee - CMO, Carnival Cinemas Moderator: Akshaye Rathi - Director, Saroj Screens

December 2017 - February 2018

F&B and Retail are contributing immensely to the revenues of multiplexes and cinema chains. Large multiplex chains earn around 20 to 25% of their revenues from the F&B business. The estimated revenues from the F&B business in cinemas are around INR 2000 crores in 2016. The session focussed on the new trends in the cinema Retail and F&B segment that is driving the business.

"Flavours" of Film Viewing Experience Akshaye Rathi, in his preliminary remarks, pointed out how the experience of watching a film has evolved over the years. The choices in

F&B being offered by premium formats are simply exhilarating. INSIGNIA, INOX's signature experience is a case in point. Movies now take on a brand new dimension in India's 7-star multiplex. From excellent screening and sound systems to plush leather recliner seats to the extravagant gourmet food choices with a butler-on-call, INSIGNIA takes F&B to a whole new level. Rajeev Chakrabarti elaborated on this premium experience. The Mumbai property, he said, offers a whopping 105 fresh foods varieties he informs. It's about an overall experience of watching movie and having a sumptuous meal, he explained. On the other end of the spectrum,

• SPECIAL STORY • Carnival Cinemas is interestingly catering to Tier 2 and 3 cities as their sole entertainment provider. Dina Mukherjee throws light on how F&B plays a vital role in these cities and the ways in which the Cinemas caters to "Bharat" vis-a-vis the bigger brand names that cater to "India". She elaborated on the concept of desi and local snacks such as chana jor garam replacing the typical "marriage of popcorn-coke" in these cities. The idea is to adopt the concept of Indanizing and localizing flavours. Catering to local palate has increased the strike rate. Understanding the local flavours, needs and value perception is very critical to catering to the smaller cities. With cinemas moving from the era of standardization to customization,

Mukta A2 Cinemas caters to different demographics and segments of audiences. Rahul Puri explained that it's never a one-size-fits all scenario. Rahul also reiterated that cinemas are no longer places where people would only watch films but also where consuming a full-fledged meal is becoming an intrinsic part of the experience. He pointed out that cinema halls are poised to become more like retail spaces, where the marketing activities such contests and gaming zones lead back the customers to the primary product, which in a movie hall is watching a film. Devang Sampat takes a look at the average number of admits during the period 2005 - 2017. He pointed out the fact that out of 100 people

on an average, 40 people buy F&B and it's mostly popcorn and cola. The F&B to ticket ratio worldover is 1:1 compared to India where people spend only 35 per cent on F&B.

Takeaway: The future of cinema exhibition is in the smaller towns and cities. Eating out and movie watching are the two entertainment opportunities in Tier 2 and 3 cities. Cinemas need to club these two well. Topicalization of food to match and complement with the theme/mood of the ongoing film is another interesting way of making F&B appealing to the audience. Kids segment also has the potential to be leveraged. 'Retailtainment' is another unexplored territory which needs to be looked at.

Tracking the Premium Large Format Cinema Experience & Growth Panelists: John Schreiner - Sr. Vice-President, IMAX Corporation Senthil Kumar - Co-founder, Qube Cinema Technologies Preetham Daniel - Senior Vice President - Asia, Harkness Screens Overview: The Premium Large Format cinema experience is driven by the need to present the ultimate theatrical experience. Globally, there are around 2500 PLF screens. USA is leading with 50% of the PLF screens, followed by 30% in Asia-Pacific with China leading the market in Asia. What does future behold for the PLF market growth in India?

Enabling the Larger than Life Experience Akshaye Rathi clearly outlines the discussion by referring to the cusp of an era where there's going to be a very clear distinction between the kind of content the audience consumes in premium large format and the one consumed in smaller screens. The pioneering companies are here to create that differentiation in terms of

• SPECIAL STORY • exhibition platform that will enable movies made for such a scale. John Schreiner points out that the lines are blurring and one of the reasons is that there's been a massive growth in premium large formats. John emphasizes that cinema operators around the world recognize that they need to provide a cinematic experience that cannot be replicated in home theatre or other formats. Ten years back, IMAX had 300 screens worldover and today it has 1275 theatres. It's mainly because the cinema upgraders recognize that consumers desire that kind of an experience. "If you are upgrading your complex, you really need to focus on the package," says John. He also made references to Transformers and Dunkirk, which were shot using IMAX technology and the projection of these films on IMAX format. The Immersive experience is not just about "what you see but also about what you here". Raj Vartak spoke about the difference Dolby Atmos is making to the cinematic experience.

Raj traces the trajectory of technological core experience. With various offerings by major exhibition chains, a differentiated experience is coming to the fore. The success of the industry, according to Raj, lies in this differentiation. Raj also spoke about the VR experience in cinema and the need to have a specific business model that's suitable for India... finding the "sweet spot", as he puts it. Senthil Kumar gave a confident reassurance in his opening remarks that cinema as a medium is here for the long run. With Video-onDemand and mobile phones, people may be choosing easier options of consumption but he feels it's the social experience that matters at the end of the day. According to Senthil, cinema exhibitors will have to make an experience with the brand, which consumers can recognize and expect a certain quality from. Regarding the kind of movies that will be best served with large format -spectacular movies may be the easy answer. But Senthil also feels any

given movie deserves a large format as it can surprise the audience with spectacular detailing. Preetham Daniel ponders on the definitions of PLF. He talked about the need to package the PLF right. It's not just about making the larger screen but about the packaging. Preetham also reflected on the feasibility of PLF but at the same time reiterated the positivity for the future of the format.

Takeaway: For the exhibitors in India, the choices are quite akin to the "chicken and egg" question. On the one hand, it's about whether one can go for better screen and immersive sound and its feasibility. On the other hand, in the pan-India scenario, the content is still local. Should the exhibitors wait for enough IMAX screens to convert the local content into IMAX format or should there be enough local content, which is worthy of IMAX formats? Wait and watch is the answer!

Women in Cinema Business & Women as Audience Panelists: Nallammai Ramanathan - Executive MD, Abirami Mega Mall Nayana Borthakur - AVP, Inox Leisure Vaishali Hanumanth - MD, DRC Cinemas Janaki Sabesh - Stakeholder Engagement Head at QCT, Actor & Storyteller Moderator: Asra Shaheen - Sub Editor, TheatreWorld TW-38

Overview: A window into the world of women in a male-dominated business culture and into the world of women as audience! Women and family account for a major percentage of cinema audience. Watching the latest movies at the cinemas is a perfect way for women to catch up with friends and family. Attracting more women and family audiences to

cinemas is also a way to boosting the box office collections.

Women Mean Business Asra Shaheen gave a journalistic insight by bringing in some very important aspects into the discussion -- representation of women in the business of cinema, the glass ceiling in corporate world and women as consumers/audience. Understanding

the parity in the industry and content of cinema is critical not only to closing the gender gap but also makes for good business sense. Worldover, 70 - 80 per cent of the consumer purchasing decisions are made by women consumers - either by purchasing power or by influence. Around 53 per cent of movie-going audience are women! And hence cinema exhibitors need to understand this consumer behaviour. Family is also equally important to cinema exhibition as 62 per cent of Indian audience go out to watch films in cinema halls to spend time with their families. From corporate perspective, women make for effective leaders as they have proven to display certain key leadership qualities, according to many studies. Asra also made very significant references to a powerful report on "Investigation on the Impact of Gender Representation in Indian Films" by Geena Davis Institute. Nallammai Ramanathan described the different amenities, services, ambience that can help us bring in the more family and woman audience. As someone who runs and operates Abirami Mega Mall, one of the most popular cinema hubs in Chennai, Nallammai described how paying attention little details such as cleanliness and hygiene is something women audience appreciate. Creating a certain comfort level is another thing that women audience value. Technology and app-based services such as dial-a-ticket and net booking have provided greater convenience

and increased the percentage of women audience watching films in cinema halls, according to her. Her rich experience in running the cinema hall is testimony to her administrative acumen. Nayana Borthakur explained how, as one of India's topmost and cinema chains, INOX takes care of its women audience by ensuring their safety and security. She also emphasized that as a woman, one likes to be pampered and made to feel special and that the cinema takes its women audience very seriously. Nayana also described the gourmet initiatives taken by INOX to make F&B more attractive to the family moviegoers. Curating different menus for different films adds an interesting twist to the staple, according to her. Vaishali Hanumanth, the first woman cinema owner in South India, gave some very interesting facets into how the perception of cinema halls has changed from being a place for male hangout to a place for complete

Janaki Sabesh, who wears multiple hats as an actor, storyteller and Stakeholder Engagement Head at QCT, brought in a very different perspective to the discussion from her content perspective. Her personal experience of playing the role of Aishwarya Rai's mother in Tamil romantic comedy Jeans (later dubbed into Telugu and Hindi) by director Shankar made for an interesting narrative. Janaki's positive outlook on women in business and cinema industry was inspiring and her optimism was quite infectious.

Takeaway: From the content angle, the good news is things are changing with the success of films such as Lipstick Under My Burkha and Wonder Woman at the box office, demonstrating that women-oriented cinema is not just a critics' delight but is also pleases the audience. From the business perspective, each of the panelists stands testimony to the fact that in an industry that has always been male centric for several years, women can and have proved their mettle with their sheer talent and perseverance.

The Baahubali Learning -

What Next for Theatrical in India? Presented by Naveen KL Head - Strategic Ventures, Qube Cinema Technologies Overview: Cinema is one of the most powerful forms of entertainment. A larger than life screen, comfortable seating, coupled with incredible sound and lighting… It's a complete package of entertainment. Whether you are a standalone cinema hall or a multiplex, you aim to provide the ultimate cinematic experience to the audience. The highest grossing movie of alltime, Baahubali had created a record-breaking entry in Indian film industry. It created a tsunami at the box-office and went on to become the national film of India with international presence. It thought us to dream big. The presentation explores what's next!

Reading between the Numbers Naveen takes a deep dive into the number game of this colossal film. Baahubali 2 collected INR 1700 crore theatrical revenue in India with its release in 6500 screens across the country. Of this, INR 500 crore were generated in Hindi language, as the movie went on to become the highest grossing Hindi film in India and INR 1200 crore were generated

by the Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam cinema theatres. However, an intriguing aspect emerges from these numbers. Out of a population of 130 crore, the number of unique admissions to the most talked-about film were merely 8 crore (excluding multiple viewing), which is less than 10% of the overall population! In a country that has 50 crore potential cinema audience, the current reach of cinemas is only 16%. Naveen pointed out how the screen count is abysmally low in India at 8 screens per million population with 9400 active screens (3000 screens across multiplexes and 6400 single screens). The US at 127 screens per million population and China at 42 per million population present a stark contrast. The Indian cinema screen count gets even worse when you zero in on Tier 3 and 4 cities, where a substantial 50 per cent of the cinemagoers dwell. Naveen reiterated the need to address the needs of these cinemagoers. The box office revenues in China have significantly improved from $1.9 billion in 2011 to $6.5billion in

TW-40

December 2017 - February 2018

2016 mainly due to the rise in the number of screens. A film like The Mummy collected better revenue in China than in the US! In fact, China has become a very important market for Hollywood today.

Takeaway: There is a huge opportunity to build cinemas in 4,300 Tier 3 and 4 cities as 40 per cent of the Indian population lives in these areas. Using modern building techniques to build smaller screens at low cost is one of the possible ways of increasing the screen count. Configurations could be standardized to 150, 250 and 300 seaters. There is an opportunity to add another 10,000 screens in Tier 3 and 4 cities and scope for ancillary businesses. Like China, India too has the potential to become the biggest cinema market in the world. The most-awaited and talked about film of the year, Baahubali 2 grossly underperformed in India because of the lack of adequate screens. Adding another 10,000 screens in Tier 3 and 4 cities is poised to double up the revenue.

New Look for Reel Cinema With Burnley's Reel Cinema getting a complete makeover, the denizens will be treated a cinematic extravaganza. With Burnley's Reel Cinema getting a complete makeover, the denizens will be treated to a cinematic extravaganza. After a £2million refurbishment, the Cinema recently witnessed the official relaunch. Chain owner Kailash Chander 'KC' Suri promised a spectacular cinema experience for the moviegoers. The revamp includes the foyer, new seating and new side lights in the auditorium among others. The huge number of fan turnout was one of the major reasons that pushed for the need to upgrade the property. Mayor of Burnley, Cllr Howard Baker, was the main official guest for a special screening of 'Kingsman the Golden Circle' starring Colin Firth and Halle Berry. The evening included a celebration dinner for the who's who of cinema industry.

Upgraded Amenities The cinema comprises 9 screens, which will be gutted and refitted with new seats and carpets while an upgraded foyer will include the food and drink concessions revamped with a new licensed bar. Reel took over the Manchester Road cinema from the Apollo chain in 2012 and it has since then proved 'really successful' according to Mr Suri. On cards are a neighbouring restaurant and 'drive-thru' earmarked for fast-food chain Burger King.

Golden Village:

The Arrival of Laser Combining new laser technology with an innovative deluxe seating concept and a radical rewrite to traditional cinema design, Golden Village Paya Lebar is set to become 'the destination' for film aficionados seeking the ultimate movie experience.

Singapore's leading cinema exhibitor, Golden Village Multiplex (GV), is upping the ante in the entertainment scene in the east of the city, with the opening of Singapore's first all-new laser projection multiplex at the new Singpost Centre retail mall, located at the heart of Paya Lebar. Laser projection will make its debut on the screens in all eight auditoriums at the 756-seat GV Paya Lebar, which officially opened to the public recently. With a brightness of 20,000 lumens, the Barco Smart Laser Projection delivers unprecedented picture quality, far outperforming traditional digital projections. The new system creates higher contrast, clearer, crisper imagery and higher colour saturation, providing viewers with a far superior visual effect. Similarly, auditorium seating has undergone a radical re-think from conventional cinema row-seating. Fusing contemporary design with essential modern-day comfort, GV Paya Lebar's latest seating concept in its DUO DELUXE hall, gives movie goers the option of enhanced

privacy and comfort. With its opulent twin leatherette seats, specially designed with lumbar cushion for superior support, the exclusive 58seat cinema is further testament to GV's uncompromising approach to creating the ultimate cinema experience. And while the in-cinema enhancements might be the main talking point, the multiplex' aesthetics is far from an afterthought.

GV's grab & Gold cafĂŠ frames the entrance of the multiplex, lending the foyer both purpose and an aesthetic harmony, rarely seen in modern-day cinema design. With its warm colours, visual continuity, and contemporary furnishings and fittings, the design re-think brings an authentic but vibrant natural ambiance to the multiplex. Grab & Gold diners can enjoy a variety of local favourites

Alcons Audio is a Dutch manufacturer of professional sound systems for quality-conscious clients in the cinema, installation and rental/touring industry. The Alcons Audio team continuously strives for obtaining the most natural possible sound reproduction at any SPL with utmost day-to-day consistency and reliability. RSB Cinemas recently chose Alcons after comparison tests and this is yet another example of the unmatched quality of the latter. While large multiplex cinema chains compete on quantity, smaller independent venues are finding a new market by specialising in quality. An example is RSB Cinemas, a Dutch company that has recently

opened its second venue where cinemagoers can enjoy a new level

of quality and personal service. An Alcons audio system and laser projection in each room mean they enjoy a uniformly excellent movie experience. Located in Veldhoven, just a few kilometres from the centre of Eindhoven, each of the new-build Cinema Gold's four rooms features

• INSTALLS • large, comfortable chairs with tables, at seat luxury snacks and drinks ordered via each seat's service button at any time - and spectacular quality movies, thanks to Alcons pro-ribbon 7.1 channel surround sound systems and Barco Flagship laser cinema projectors. "We are all about giving our guests a quality experience with the personal touch," says Joop Hamers, RSB Cinemas senior marketing manager. "Both of our new venues Cinema Gold and Cinema Roma in Wijchen - are smaller than the multiplex chains, but we still offer very commercial programming." Alcons C-series pro-ribbon systems range from the ultra-compact CR1 up to the large format CR4 and scalable Cinemarray systems. Complemented by a range of surround and subwoofer units, the C-series ensures that - whatever the space and sound reproduction demands - audiences enjoy unrivalled quality cinema sound.

He continues, "We decided to use Alcons after doing listening tests at a cinema with a different audio setup in each of its screening rooms. We really heard the difference in the room that had an Alcons system. When turning up the volume, Alcons stays really clear and it doesn't hurt your ears. "We have found that one of the main complaints from cinemagoers is that they claim the audio is too loud. When Alcons systems are run at the same SPLs as conventional systems, there are almost no complaints. We experienced that difference ourselves at Hilversum, which convinced us that Alcons was the ideal system for our new, high quality venues." Cinema Gold has already proved so popular that, within two weeks of

opening, it welcomed its 10,000th guest and, after less than three months, had catered for over 30,000. "We have been very pleased with the success of Cinema Gold and have had a lot of compliments about both the sound and picture quality," says Joop. "The combination of an Alcons audio system and Barco flagship laser projection in each room means guests enjoy a uniformly excellent movie experience." Indeed RSB Cinemas is so impressed with Alcons technology that it is even mentioned on Cinema Gold's customer-facing web site, saying 'Our speakers are equipped with pro-ribbon drivers, meaning the sound is never harsh, but clear and compelling.'

Opened in mid-2016, the threescreen Cinema Roma featured two Alcons CR3 and one CR2 three-way, pro-ribbon screen systems, a recipe for success repeated at the slightly bigger Cinema Gold, which recently opened. Here Rooms 1, 2 and 4 each feature three CR3 systems, three CB181 18" shallow subwoofers and up to 24 CCS8 two-way full-range units for main floor and balcony surrounds. The smaller Room 3 features three CR2 units, two CB181 subs and 20 CCS8s for main floor and balcony surrounds. All systems are powered and controlled by Sentinel3 four-channel amplified loudspeaker controllers. "It was very important for us to offer an identical quality experience in each room," says Joop. "Guests just want to see their chosen movie, they don't want to have to think about whether it will sound better in one room or another. All of our rooms sound equally as good as all the others."

Swarm Logic

A Smart Energy Management Solution With its HVAC synchronization and optimization of theatre energy consumption, Encycle's Swarm Logic technology combats the challenges of excessive electric demand and consumption. We all enjoy going to the movies, don't we?! But how often do you think about the unique HVAC (Heat, ventilation and air conditioning) requirements of theatres? The typical "one size fits all" approach fails to consider how each facility is being used and does not result in the most energy-efficient operation. Different building types have different HVAC requirements and energy efficiency optimization depends on this understanding and execution.

TW-52

December 2017 - February 2018

Unique Energy Efficiency Here's a transformational technology that delivers immediate savings for a system of rooftop HVAC units that transcends any of the incremental improvements achieved at the equipment level by HVAC manufacturers in decades. Clean technology company Encycle's experience across dozens of such facilities spanning many states has helped it develop a deep understanding of the unique energy efficiency factors that must be considered when optimizing theatre energy consumption. Encycle's latest Swarm Logic technology is a smart energy management solution, which can go a long way in reducing carbon footprint.

Addressing Multiple Cooling Requirements "During hot summer days, theatre customers expect cool surroundings as a refuge from the heat outside," said Luis Bedolla, an Encycle Operations Technician. The most common layout for theatres today is to house at least 10 cinema auditoriums in a building; Encycle's portfolio of theatres spans 4 to 20 cinema auditoriums per facility. Each facility contains multiple areas with unique cooling requirements, and it is important to understand how

• TECHNOLOGY • they each should be handled with respect to energy efficiency optimization: •

Projection rooms, even though essentially unoccupied, can have tremendous heat loads due to projector lamps, even with each projector having its own ventilation system that vents to the rooftop. These zones cannot participate in demand management or demand response, and they require high volumes of efficiently operating cooling.

Lobby and concession areas are the easiest areas to manage given the wide, open nature of this type of space, which has only minimal heat build-up from cooking equipment.

Large cinema auditoriums are often served by two rooftop HVAC units (RTUs), i.e., a large one carrying most of the cooling load and a smaller one for

additional cooling required when the cinema approaches maximum occupancy. These cinemas provide good opportunities for peak

demand savings. •

Smaller cinema auditoriums are often served by only one RTU. They require a highly responsive

Harkins Theaters, one of the largest family-owned theatre chains in North America, installed EASE (Energy-as-a-Service by Encycle). This substantially reduced Harkins' utility costs with virtually no impact on the workload of the staff. Harkins Theaters' Director of Facilities, Fred DiNapoli, explained "With Encycle's controllers installed, my HVAC units are working smarter than ever, reducing our peak demand and consumption without the need for me to monitor or adjust settings. EASE frees up my time to concentrate on other facets of operations. Encycle also provides my service technicians with valuable real-time insight into HVAC performance. It just works!" Encycle initially installed Swarm Logic controllers in Harkins' theatre complexes in Moreno Valley and Chino Hills (California). Through the use of various load management strategies, Encycle's system smoothens out daytime demand, lowering monthly peaks. Its sub-metering and scheduling capabilities are used to identify and implement consumption reduction strategies. Encycle's CEO, Bob Chiste, stated: "Using these strategies, Encycle provided Harkins Theaters with solid savings of over $25,000 per year at two locations, and we are now in discussions with Harkins about utilizing our EASE model across their entire chain. We provide our EASE service at several hundred facilities, including theatres, retail and mall operations, and distribution centres."

• TECHNOLOGY • control system to accommodate big swings in cooling demand while maintaining comfort. Encycle deploys a more responsive configuration of its adaptive duty cycling strategy in such areas, allowing for a faster ramp-up in cooling and a slower ramp-down than in other areas. The wide variety of demands that the cinema places on the HVAC system presents several challenges in maintaining temperature in each area of the facility in the most energy efficient manner. "Theatres have late-morning opening hours, which cause the HVAC equipment to need to work

TW-54

December 2017 - February 2018

even harder on warm days to bring the auditoriums and atrium to the desired temperature," said Luis. "If not managed properly, the facility can have excessive peak demand and electric consumption."

Combating Peak Electric Demand & Consumption Challenges To combat this challenge, Encycle's Swarm Logic technology, which many theatres have deployed, leverages several capabilities that optimize electric demand and consumption. For instance, the staggered startup function within Swarm Logic allows cooling to be gradually eased in rather than all units being forced on all at once at the start of the day. This feature not only guards against unnecessarily

high peaks (and therefore high demand charges on each month's utility bill), but also reduces consumption costs every day. Theatres often see changes to their hours depending on midnight showings, holiday showings or special events. "When changes in opening hours require changes to schedules, these are simple to manage on our portal by either the theatre facility managers or by making a quick call to Encycle's support team." said Luis. Leveraging the HVAC synchronization and control capabilities of the Swarm Logic solution, a theatre group has achieved a 10% reduction in peak electric demand and a 12% reduction in consumption across back-to-back years. Their clients started achieving results almost instantaneously after activating Swarm Logic, all while operating in the background and being virtually invisible to customers and the theatre staff.

"I have had the pleasure of attending over 20 conventions and the event is one of the highlights of the year for me.

It's great to see all the upcoming movies and attend the trade show. It's a wonderful opportunity to network and renew friendships. I find the seminars interesting and always learn something from them." Bob Mason, Lake Cinema, Boolaroo
