If you’re that person who wants the best movie experience possible with the best image quality and sound available today, it’s got to be the Dolby Cinemas at AMC prime - Times Square, New York. Having experienced the worldwide blockbuster movie, Avengers: infinity War in this cinema screen, one could easily exclaim on the qualitative technology used, the signages, and the perfect cinematic ambience thus serving to sweep any moviegoer right off his feet. Though the tickets being on the pricey note than that of IMAX, it’s totally worth the money. The world is on a speedy run towards bringing in new innovations and so is the Cinema Industry today. Yes! The laser sources are out and booming in the cinema market. Beyond picture quality, these redefined laser sources last longer than the traditional lamp based projectors, aren’t as fragile comparatively. With these benefits, laser sources will probably be the future of front projection. This makes it easier for exhibitors who are looking into converting their existing lamp based 2K or 4K projectors without investing on new series laser projectors. Showcasing a demo of the recently launched 3D LED screens as well at the tradeshow, allowing every visitor to have their share of the magical experience, CinemaCon once again played as an important centre for spreading new and varied innovations in cinema technology. The Marvel Cinematic Universe’s latest entry, Avengers: Infinity War raises a question familiar to hero stories — what is the worth of one life relative to many? — But avoids offering the usual easy answer. Instead, it asks audiences to sit with failure and doubt, in a way very few blockbusters do (and much more successfully than the recent Star Wars movie). In doing so, it raises itself into the upper ranks of Marvel movies, maybe even of any blockbusters generally. The more the thought in the minds of people, the more they like it. The mega movie turned into an international blockbuster having earned the domestic opening of US$ 258.2 million and an overwhelming worldwide opening of US $ 641 million. On the same note, it also sets a bar that will be extremely difficult for its 2019’s sequel to clear. Daring to let superheroes fail puts the Avengers sequel in a wide narrative corner. In India, a certain period of discontent had spread over Tamil Nadu. The Tamil film industry went on a strike form March 1. It dragged on for 48 days and was brought to an end on April 17. The time since the strike had been called off, and though the industry missed the Tamil New Year releases for the first time in its history, the moviegoers certainly do have their bags loaded for the movies coming up not only from Kollywood , but the south Indian film industry on the whole as well. The enthralling fact now is that India is getting into the next level of cinema exhibition. Having many 7-star cinema theatres being opened, one such by Inox in Delhi and PVR’s recently launched air purifier theatres has set the standards of cinema exhibition to a whole new level once again proving the raving aspect of luxury and class for the cinema world. Big Cine Expo 2018 (28-29 August), one of the largest international convention and trade show for single-screen, multiplex cinema, malls and theatrical distribution in India and Asia is coming up! So do join in to be a part of the two day grand convention and trade show furthermore, to experience and gain the latest updates spiraling in the cinema exhibition market. TheatreWorld is once again the media partner at the major trade shows: CineEurope - Barcelona, Spain (11-14 June) and AIMC- Australian International Movie Convention (29 July- 2 August). See you all soon! Do not forget to pick your copy of TheatreWorld magazine at the above shows!!! Wanda and Christie to jointly Establish Cinema Technology Centre of Excellence (CTCE) Christie, a global leader in digital cinema projection and audio technologies, announced recently that it has entered into an agreement with Wanda Film Holding, a subsidiary of Wanda Group and Asia's largest cinema operator, to jointly establish a research and development (R&D) centre for cinema technology within the Wanda Studios' site in Qingdao, Shandong Province, China. The Wanda-Christie Cinema Technology Centre of Excellence (CTCE) will be solely owned by Wanda Film Holding, with Christie as the sole partner to exclusively operate the high-tech facility for advanced R&D of digital cinema projection systems, including: •

Customized RGB laser projection technology for Wanda Film Holding and its global affiliates

RGB laser retrofit solutions for Xenon projection systems

Cinema solutions for Wanda's premium large format auditoriums (in the areas of projection, audio, screen and 3D/ 4D technology)

LED cinema screens

Service solutions for network operation centres, and

Testing of Xenon lamps versus competitive illumination technology.

John Zeng, President, Wanda Film Holding, said, "We're pleased to once again collaborate with our longstanding partner Christie to set up the CTCE at our Studios site in Qingdao. This is a landmark agreement that will elevate the relationship of both companies to new heights. I'm confident that with Christie's strong commitment to technological innovation, particularly in RGB laser, we can achieve the

TW-8

objectives of staying at the forefront of cutting-edge cinema technologies and to continue providing highquality, innovative shared experiences for our customers." "We are honoured to work with Wanda Film Holding in setting up this state-of-the-art R&D facility with the common goal of exploring technology solutions to enhance the cinema experience and to ensure that the brick and mortar cinema remains consumers' top choice for watching movies," said Jack Kline, Chairman, President and CEO of all of Christie's operating companies, worldwide. "This agreement is the result of the deep and mutuallysatisfying relationship that both companies have embarked on for almost a decade, and which has seen productive engagements ever since. With the CTCE, we look forward to advancing our laser and illumination technologies, and continuing to put Wanda Film Holding at the forefront of the film industry across the globe." The CTCE will assist Wanda and Christie in areas such as the selection of laser/illumination technology, including guidance on choosing the best retrofit technology where appropriate for Xenon-to-RGB laser technology globally to Christie's installed base of more than 60,000 digital cinema projectors worldwide. Additionally, the site will serve as a

guide for Christie's product development, especially for any customized products to be supplied exclusively to Wanda or any of its affiliates. Christie will also use CTCE as its primary commercial test site for all new cinema products. Wanda Film Holding and Christie will officially open the CTCE at a ceremony in Wanda Studios on April 27, during which senior executives from both companies will unveil a plaque marking this new joint collaboration. The event will also be attended by officials from China's Ministry of Science and Technology based in Qingdao. Prior to this collaboration, Wanda Film Holding had signed an exclusive strategic partnership agreement with Christie to install several thousand Christie Solaria Series 2K and 4K digital cinema projectors, as well as the Christie Vive Audio solution in selected theatres. As well, Wanda Film Holding and Christie have embarked on initiatives in recent years to promote the technology, branding and market development of Wanda's "Hall 9" auditoriums, some of which are equipped with Christie RGB laser projection and Vive Audio cinema sound system, such as Beijing's CBD Wanda Plaza, Tongzhou Wanda Plaza and Shanghai's Wujiaochang Wanda Cinema.

Arts Alliance Media Opens Operations in China Arts Alliance Media (AAM) today announced the start of operations in mainland China, with the establishment of a legal entity and the opening of a new office in the country. AAM China will initially undertake sales, marketing and some

localisation-driven development work. By the year-end, it is planned that a full-service Network Operations Centre (NOC) will be established to provide 1st, 2nd and 3rd line support to all customers in the Chinese market. The NOC will be the first centre outside the UK and will be followed by a similar centre in the US, to better enable the delivery of an effective 24/7 support infrastructure to customers wherever in the world they are. Pat Foley, CEO at AAM commented, "The news that this year, so far, the Chinese box office has outperformed that of the US, is remarkable. However, considering how relatively new cinema is to the Chinese market, makes this result quite staggering. The scale and speed of growth in China are unparalleled and makes it a key market for any supplier to the cinema industry." "That said, China presents its own range of challenges and nuances that any supplier needs to address in order to be successful," Foley continues. "Unencumbered by the long history of cinema, Chinese exhibitors are significantly more open to digital technology and more demanding in what they expect their solutions to deliver. To ensure that our products deliver significant value, it is imperative that we have an active presence in the Chinese marketplace."

GDC Technology Integrates Screenvision Media Preshow with Advanced Theatre Management System GDC Technology Limited, a leading global provider of digital cinema solutions, announced today the completed integration of its TMS2000 Theatre Management System with the Screenvision Media preshow. The integration enables automated ingestion and programming of ad content directly from Screenvision Media's server to GDC's new Cinema Automation CA2.0 and it's TMS-2000, the second most deployed theatre management system solution globally. The integration provides Screenvision Media's network of exhibitors with preshow trimming functionality to maximize the time available for preshow advertising between every show. "This is a major milestone for Screenvision Media as many of our customers have deployed GDC's robust theatre management system. The integration of GDC with our preshow delivery provides the U.S. market with alternatives when creating a fully integrated cinema workflow," said Mike Henry, SVP of Information Technology at Screenvision Media.

"We've enjoyed a long history with GDC and are looking forward to working with their technical and sales teams to continually improve the Screenvision Media preshow experience at GDC sites. This successful integration allows the GDC footprint with their TMS to have full functionality of rating targets, feature targets and preshow trimming capabilities," said Darryl Schaffer, Executive Vice President, Operations and Exhibitor Relations of Screenvision Media. The TMS-2000's robust capabilities include integrated screen monitoring, with playback and equipment status displayed from a single access point; an enhanced Content Manager, which enables centralized management of content and KDM; a smarter Show Scheduler, which gives alerts regarding missing CPL or invalid KDM; and Smart Restore, a function that makes server replacement easy and instant. Meanwhile, Quality Manager is an optional module that brings users excellent value in ensuring the right level of projector brightness, crisp color and crystal-clear audio. In addition, a newly developed mobile

app extends theatre management to mobile platforms for complete ease of use. The newest features include: •

Template System - automatic generation of show playlist based on POS show title, show times and screen's capability

Automated Pre-Show - a template to insert advertisement and trailer automatically according to given rules

Automatic KDM Ingestion - via USB key

"Since the launch of the TMS-2000 at CineAsia 2014, the list of U.S. exhibitors who solely rely upon it to provide simple and efficient centralized management has grown exponentially. Accordingly, integrating with leading provider, like Screenvision Media, makes perfect sense for GDC. GDC TMS installations are now able to 'switch on' automated preshow integration with Screenvision Media. The compliance of ad playlist delivery is now in place for nearly 1,000 screens with GDC products and Screenvision Media," said Annie Wang, executive vice president of GDC Technology LLC.

Our EclairLive streaming solution allows content to be broadcast at a rate of between 6 and 10 Megabits/s, which is the existing configuration in most cinemas in France. We hope that this new solution will allow distributors of alternative content to convince more exhibitors with the live event experience." For Jocelyn Bouyssy, Managing Director of CGR Cinemas, "EclairLive, with its new live streaming capability, will allow us to expand the screening of alternative content in our cinemas. We will extend our content offer to meet the growing requests from our audiences, all without altering the image and sound quality." Severtson Announces New Cinema Projection Screens A leader in the cinema, home theatre, and Pro-AV screen industry, Severtson Corporation has a history of creating cutting edge, top-quality projection screens for their customers. Today, on this USA day of pranks and jokes known as "April Fools' Day," Severtson is once again announcing the creation of a new product line that expands projection screens to the next level: self-healing, stretchable screens. Made out of bubble gum-like PVC vinyl, Severtsons' revolutionary stretchable screen not only can be pulled to fit any home theatre or auditorium, it also comes with another Severtson innovation: Self-Healing Properties! Regeneration abilities which enable damaged screens to self-heal back to their original state. The idea for stretchable screens came about at Severtson's corporate offices as Kirk Severtson, technology genius and projection screen guru, accidentally dropped his chewing gum into a batch of vinyl resin. Kirk practically burst seeing the benefit, and began expanding on this new innovation. He chewed on the idea for quite some time before he started to bounce ideas off the Severtson Screen employees. Everyone believed it to be a long-stretch at first, but with the right consistency of bubblegum and PVC resin, the new screen popped into reality! Dan Maxwell, VP of Severtson's Cinema Screen division commented, "The immediately noticeable benefit is the very pleasant bubble gum aroma that comes from the screens. Our production team also enjoys its gummy consistency which completely eliminates the need for seams on large projection screens!" One employee, Brandon MacKendrick, at first thought these stretching screens were a bunch of hubbabubba, but after seeing them remarked that they reminded him of the Stretch-Arm toys of his demented childhood. But the unexpected

TW-24

June-August 2018

benefit which surprised everyone is the new material's amazing self-healing properties similar to that also observed when kids play with and re-shape their bubblegum. Severtson Screens has been quickly chomping away at perfecting and producing these screens before the idea pops into competitors' minds or the projection screen economic bubble bursts! Not only are the screens incredibly stretchy, with amazing self-healing properties, but they also come with all of Severtson Screen's standard coatings and perforation combinations. Plus, the amazing stretchiness of these screens absolutely negates the need for folding, the very innovation Severtson Screens has become known for throughout the industry. With this new screen technology, Severtson can easily send a one-size-fits-all stretchy screen in a single-stamped envelope, which will expand to fit practically any frame size of auditoriums. Stretchy screens are the perfect solution for any size job. They fit perfectly in home theatre screen frames, commercial implementations, and cinema stages. They are also highly portable, since they can be stretched to fit any space, and will return to their original size once they are allowed to relax. "We've learned to not use very heavy electric screen weight bars when using the new stretchable material. The screens just keeps stretching!" said Aaron White, National Director of Severtson's Home Theatre & Commercial division. Large cinema installers have also commented about these amazing screens and how easy they are to stretch on to any cinema-sized frame. And theatre owners are just thrilled now that screen damages due to cleaning or vandalism are as easy to fix as merely stretching the material's damaged edges and pinching them together - within moments it's as if there was never an issue with the screen at all!

Global Chain AMC First to Enter Cinema Sector in Saudi Arabia Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Culture and Information announced on Wednesday that it granted the first cinema operating license so that U.S. industry leader AMC, the largest theatrical exhibitor in the world, can operate cinemas in Saudi Arabia. AMC plans to open the Kingdom's first cinema theatre, in Riyadh, on April 18. This follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between AMC and the Public Investment Fund (PIF) in December 2017 to explore potential trade cooperation opportunities. With a population of more than 32 million, the majority of whom are under the age of 30, Saudi Arabia is set to become the largest market for movie-goers in the Arabian Gulf region. In a landmark decision in December, the Ministry of Culture and Information announced that commercial cinemas would be allowed to operate in the Kingdom from early 2018, for the first time in more than 35 years. The decision is part of Saudi Arabia's social and economic reform program under Vision 2030, spearheaded by His Royal Highness the Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is currently on an official visit to the United States. The Kingdom is set to have nearly 350 cinemas, with over 2,500 screens, by 2030. "The granting of the first license marks the opening of very significant opportunities for exhibitors. The Saudi market is very large, with the majority of the population under the age of 30 and eager to watch their favourite films here at home," said Dr. Awwad Alawwad, Minister of Culture and Information. "The aim of Saudi Vision 2030 is to improve the quality of life for Saudi families by providing an array of entertainment opportunities. The

TW-26

June-August 2018

restoration of cinemas will also help boost the local economy by increasing household spending on entertainment while supporting job creation in the Kingdom," Dr. Alawwad said. Vision 2030 has established a goal of increasing annual Saudi spending on cultural and entertainment activities from the current 2.9% of total household expenditure to 6% by 2030. Adam Aron, CEO and President of AMC Entertainment said, "AMC has been extraordinarily impressed by the imagination to move Saudi Arabia forward as detailed in Vision 2030, and we have been emboldened by the professional, gracious and warm welcome we have received from the Ministry of Culture and Information, from the Public Investment Fund and from every Saudi institution and individual with whom we have been in contact. We greatly look forward to serving the people of Saudi Arabia with truly world-class theatres all across the Kingdom." AMC's entry into the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is occurring in partnership with the Public Investment Fund through its subsidiary, the Development and Investment Entertainment Company. The move to allow movie theatres opens up a big domestic market, which could approach up to US$1 billion in annual box office sales, which leading cinema chains are keen to break into as it is the largest market in the Arabian Gulf region.

Alamo Drafthouse:

Tradition of Introducing the Best Promising the best contrast, the best color, the brightest screens, the Alamo Drafthouse offers a comfortable, exciting and a memorable experience for the moviegoers. Bill DiGaetano added that having Sony's 4K laser projection has allowed them the flexibility to offer different types of programming for their guests.

Alamo Drafthouse Cinema locations have been widely known for introducing "firsts" to their customers, and now they get to add another to the list: the first U.S. installations of Sony's 4K laser projection systems, at the justopened Alamo Drafthouse Lake Highlands Theater in Dallas, Texas.

"After we first went 4K, customer feedback was huge" he said. The picture was so clean and so detailed. We were glad with the fact we had the latest and greatest installs as a competitive advantage, and we would always see a great spike of business in our venues because we were able to offer a film in 4K.

According to the location's owner and COO, Bill DiGaetano, rolling out the state-of-the-art projectors is right in line with the Alamo Drafthouse approach of placing the customer experience first.

When the 4K laser phosphor became available, taking the next step was obvious, due to his experience with Sony performance and reliability.

Stating how Alamo Drafthouse has always prided itself on being the best in every category, the projection systems and technology, regardless of it being 4K digital, 7.1 Dolby and now the new laser 4K have always been looked for with the atmost priority." We've never wanted to give our guests an excuse to go to another theater, so we are determined to provide the best of everything", he added. DiGaetano's first experiences with Sony projection were in 2012, when he opened his first Alamo Drafthouse location. Since then, the increased guest traffic, higher-quality presentation and improved operations have combined to more than recoup his investment and make the decision to step up to the new 4K laser models an easy one.

"What's pretty interesting about the new Sony Phosphor laser projection is that there are still four light sources, so as long as the blue doesn't blow we can still keep the movie rolling," said Jordan Michael, creative director of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema DFW. That's an amazing feature that only Sony provides. No down time. Following the opening of Alamo Drafthouse Lake Highlands, the next locations for the 4K laser systems are Denton, Texas, and Woodbury, Minnesota, over the next few months for a total of 25 laser SRX-815P models. "We always want the new hot thing in town," said Michael. We wanted to be in the 4K digital scene first, and we got to it, just in time for Avatar, which at the time was the hot new movie. We'll do whatever is needed to get the best quality for the moviegoers.

He added that having 4K projection has allowed them the flexibility to offer different types of programming for their guests. "We love being able to feature a really nice 4K restoration of a film that's 30 years old," he said, "showing it in its former glory, brighter and better but still honoring how it was created in the first place. These laser projectors allow us to give someone something old in a new way. That is definitely one of our hallmarks." "That is king for us, because the type of movie-goers we attract really care about presentation," DiGaetano said. "To be able to promise the best contrast, the best color, the brightest screens, is amazing for us. We spend a lot of time making sure our screens are bright. We are constantly taking reads, making sure we've got the right parameters, making sure everything's appealing. We believe keeping up with that quality control is critical and with these lasers, we don't even worry about it, we just know it's going to be bright and look great. It makes it even easier for us to be the best." Another anticipated benefit of laser projection is the elimination of frequent bulb replacements, which translates to significant long-term cost savings. Combined with the projectors' enhanced image quality, Alamo Drafthouse Lake Highlands is able to elevate its presentation. Photo Credit: Kathy Tran

The audio logo was first developed by Dr. James 'Andy' Moorer in 1982 and debuted in theaters before Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi in 1983. Since its premiere over 30 years ago, the beloved THX Deep Note has permeated the film industry and crossed over to countless pop culture references, including The Simpsons, and has

become one of the most iconic audio logos in film history. THX is collaborating with some of the most creative minds in Hollywood to produce this high-fidelity audio and visual entertainment experience. The intention of creating this new piece is to modernize and adapt to the latest cinema audio and imaging formats while remaining faithful to the original creation. With this new Deep Note trailer, THX honors its past while looking ahead to the company's future with a new trailer that will

resonate with audiences worldwide and draw similar responses and visceral reactions from movie-goers as the previous THX trailers featuring the famous Deep Note mnemonic. The new trailer is aiming to set a cutting-edge aesthetic and will pay tribute to THX's heritage of optimizing the audio and visual fidelity of the entertainment experience in cinema. Production on the trailer started this month and will be released this summer.
