MINDSHARE THEATREWORLD EDITORIAL
Indian cinema exhibition was vastly different when TheatreWorld was launched 20 years back. Cinema exhibition back then was dominated by single-screens that were trying to upgrade their sound systems from analogue to digital with some also changing their consoles from arc-carbon to xenon. Random murmurs of multiplexing were being heard with PVR having opened the country’s first multiplex at New Delhi years earlier. The most vibrant cinema exhibition region was South India and anybody who was a somebody in his town or village would construct a single-screen theatre. However, the single-screen was shunned by the urban middle-class and closing down gradually. TheatreWorld was launched in 1999 on a whim and a fancy. There were no business plans as such, but just pure passion of Shri Sandeep Mittal, Founder, TheatreWorld magazine. He did not think then that this very passion would bring it to 84 issues in 20 years but the journey has been very overwhelming indeed. Celebrating our 20th anniversary, we strive to continue further for the next decade and so forth to come by. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is now allowing movie theatres to open for the first time in more than 35 years. With a population of more than 33 million and roughly two-thirds of it under 30 years of age, the country’s demographics play into mere strength as a social entertainment destination that is also an affordable luxury. The brands believe the middle-east market is large enough to support more locations within the next ten years and they are on the run to expand to all parts of the region. With exclusive insights of mega projects like Reel Cinemas in Downtown, Dubai; Vox Cinemas launching its first multiplex in Riyadh park and Iraqi Cinemas’ exuberant revival, take a glimpse into how the middle east market is currently giving a huge opportunity to the cinema industry.

CGR Declares RGB Laser to Be the Future of Cinema CGR Cinemas has chosen Christie, a leading cinema technology manufacturer, as its exclusive laser projection partner, as it moves to convert all 700 of its theatres to RGB pure laser technology. In a landmark agreement that sees CGR becoming the largest investor in Christie’s RealLaser systems in the world today,
200 CGR Classic auditoriums will be redeveloped for Christie RealLaser over the next two years. Complementing CGR's hugelysuccessful ICE (Immersive Cinema Experience) theatres, which also utilize RGB pure laser systems, CGR will deliver the premium cinema experience. Christie's proprietary technology uses next-generation RGB pure lasers to deliver the highest levels of brightness, contrast and colour reproduction, fulfilling the long-heralded potential of laser illumination as the preferred successor to lamp-based cinema projection technology."Following the ICE premium screen success with our cinemagoers, this investment demonstrates our commitment to offering the best quality experience for our audiences, as we look to keep them coming back to CGR time and time again," says Jocelyn Bouyssy, CEO of CGR Cinemas. "Having experienced what RGB pure laser can do with ICE premium screens, we believe it is the future of cinema, and, having successfully upgraded to digital projection with Christie 10 years ago, we are delighted to again be utilising the company's latest technology developments." The first 100 projectors will be installed in 2019, with the remaining 100 projectors to arrive in 2020. To
accommodate the variety of screen sizes required to facilitate projection across CGR Cínemas' 73 locations, the projectors will be selected from across Christie's portfolio of RGB pure laser cinema projectors. This portfolio includes the CP4325-RGB, the soon to be released CP2315-RGB and CP2320RGB models, and further Christie RealLaser cinema projector models to be released in the next 12 months."Our trusted relationship with Christie has created an environment where we can continue to lead the way by using the best technology available," says Sebastien Bruel, CTO, CGR Cinemas. "We've worked together since 2007, and in that time, they've helped us to advance our offering and remain at the forefront of the cinema experience. They're breaking new grounds once again with RGB pure laser projection, and we're delighted to be offering it in our cinemas." CGR Cinemas has experienced strong interest in its current premium screen ICE experience, which utilises Christie's first generation of RGB pure laser cinema projectors. As a result, the company has several years of experience and customer data with the technology. CGR believes now is the best time to invest, as Christie's next generation of Christie RealLaser projectors deliver 4K, high frame rate, DCI performance and even higher contrast. With the support of Christie and Ciné Digital Service (CDS) - the leading French cinema integrator - the company will oversee the upgrade of 200 classic auditoria across its network from lamp technology to RGB pure laser."Our relationship with CDS and CGR Cínemas goes back many years," says Adil Zerouali, Senior Sales Director Cinema Europe, Christie. "It continues to flourish. As CGR looks with us to the future of cinema, seeking out the best technologies; first digital and now RGB pure laser to excite and entertain cinema audiences. And CGR's enthusiasm to do so makes them a pleasure to work with."

Cinemanext Relocates to a New High-Tech Facility in West London CinemaNext, the European specialist in cinema exhibitor services, announced the relocation of its UK offices to a new, high-tech facility in the west London town of Uxbridge. The result is an optimized and fullysecure hub to support CinemaNext's fast-growing activities in the United Kingdom and Ireland. Housing CinemaNext's UK engineering team, the new 9,300 sq.ft (870 sq.m) location in Middlesex is divided into a large workshop featuring a projector test facility, warehouse and pre-build area. The upstairs workspace includes a fully-equipped conference room, two break out offices, and interconnecting and scalable offices for up to 32 people. The entire facility has also been fitted with full MPAA (Motion Picture Association of America) security along with highspeed fibre data connections. "Our move from both Argyll Street and the Slough facility had become necessary due to the steady increase in business, and will help consolidate our activities," explains Jerry Murdoch, General Manager of CinemaNext UK & Ireland. "CinemaNext is now the leading UK integrator and, with a number of important new service and supply contracts, a larger 'all under one roof' facility was needed. This new hub is also ideally located in proximity to the road, rail and airport links, enabling us to be even more efficient in meeting our customers' needs." Joining CinemaNext at this new location is Eclair's Theatrical Delivery team, which will continue to provide Satellite DCP delivery to UK, Ireland, Italy, Germany, Austria, France, Spain and Italy, worldwide Broadband DCP delivery, and the management of Live Cinema Events for the UK and Ireland. months. Eclair will maintain its Argyll Street offices and state-of-the-art screening rooms in central London to serve the local film community.
QSC’s New Q-SYS Networking Solutions QSC introduces new Q-SYS Networking Solutions, including Q-SYS NS Series network, switches and additional networking resources to help cinema technicians simplify installation and increase the profitability of Q-SYS-based networked audio, video and control (AV&C) systems. For cinema technicians looking to expedite deployment of Q-SYS on a local network, QSC introduces the Q-SYS NS Series. The NS Series is a range of enterprise-grade, fully managed 1/10GbE network switches that are pre-configured to meet the performance requirements of the Q-SYS Platform and associated thirdparty networking technologies. Available in 8-port, 24-port and 48-port models, these Dell EMC network switches provide real-time transport of Q-SYS AV&C, as well as AES67 audio streams simultaneously within the same VLAN, all without the need to manually configure the network switch or endpoints. Independently tested and verified by the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Laboratory (UNHIOL), the NS Series is a plug-and-play solution that enables faster, more reliable system deployment and
ensures support for the entire Q-SYS ecosystem, including future networked Q-SYS processors and peripherals."Q-SYS was built around mainstream, standard IT technology in order to provide synchronized, low-latency audio and video over standard IT networks. Nearly all modern network switches meet the performance requirements to support the transport of real-time media; however, depending on network traffic, the network switch may need to be manually configured," says Martin Barbour, Product Manager, QSC Systems. "In an effort to simplify Q-SYS system deployments, QSC has developed the NS Series to eliminate the guesswork related to networking and provide cinema technicians with a solution that can reduce the amount of time spent on network configuration, troubleshooting and support, allowing them to focus on more profitable aspects of the project." For large multiplex installations that require a converged network infrastructure for a Q-SYS deployment, QSC has partnered with UNH-IOL, an independent provider of broad-based testing and standards conformance services for the networking industries, to provide independent network switch qualification for the Q-SYS Platform."The UNH-IOL is trusted by some of the most recognized manufacturers in the networking industry, and we are very excited to partner with QSC to offer unbiased, neutral testing of network switches to validate the performance requirements necessary for real-time media distribution with the Q-SYS Platform," says Michayla Newcombe, Associate Director UNH Interoperability Laboratory. "We worked very closely with QSC to develop a robust testing process based on industry accepted test methodologies to help increase confidence and reduce time to market."
Dietrich Theater Decides for Dolby Atmos and Alcons, Twice
The demands of moviegoers are growing - and with them is the pressure on cinema operators to enable even better and increasingly immersive cinema experiences. Dolby's surround sound technology Atmos is one of the most sought-after features in the cinema market and is often integrated into a larger premium concept. Such a premium concept was realized by the two Munich companies zweiB and Videocation in a joint project in the 363-seat Saal 8 of the Dietrich Theater in Neu-Ulm, Germany. In the course of very extensive conversion work, Videocation was responsible for the installation of a Sony SRX515DS 4K double projection, while zweiB took over the installation of the equally high-quality sound system. "The customer clearly opted for a premium concept and, in addition to the absolute high-quality state-of-the-art picture quality, also wanted an outstanding sound installation," recalls Tammo Buhren, managing director of zweiB GmbH. "zweiB actively supports Alcons as an innovative loudspeaker manufacturer, which we believe offers the best possible quality sound available on the market," said Buhren, explaining his confidence in the Dutch company's products. Unsurprisingly, the specialist in digital cinema technology, event technology and media production trusted Alcons Audio in this extremely quality-conscious project. Those in charge at the Dietrich Theater had also heard of zweiB and their expertise in connection with Alcons Audio. "In the movie industry, the uncompromising quality of the Alcons solutions has gotten around," said Buhren. "At zweiB we are absolutely convinced of the products, and we know that they clearly offer added value for the customer. What we have installed in the Dietrich Theater is simply something different than the standard - and that's what you hear."
The installation of the sound system in the cinema 8 of the house was completed within a week. The result convinced the operator so much that already a few months later a second, identical installation, apart from the lighting concept, was commissioned in hall 9, which was successfully completed the following months.zweiB installed 5x Alcons CR4 3-way Pro-Ribbon screen systems, 4x CB362 subwoofer, 2x CB181sl subwoofer surrounds, 18x Pro-Ribbon CCS12 surround sound systems, and 4x CCS12S and 8x CCS8S as top surround. The entire system is powered by Alcons Sentinel 3 Amplified Loudspeaker Controllers. "The installation went smoothly," confirms Buhren. And the result could be heard: "We realized an impressive installation at the Dietrich Theater, which sounds really good!" For zweiB it was the first cinema installation with the combination Alcons Audio / Dolby Atmos. Dolby Atmos is meanwhile available for a considerable number of screens worldwide, which means that more and even smaller movie titles are being equipped with Atmos by studios and the market is growing. "Sound localization and the movement of sounds through the room, the key features of Dolby Atmos, are particularly well supported by the Alcons speakers. I firmly believe that Alcons systems better transport the essence of Atmos than other market speakers. " "In the modernization of the Dietrich Theater, our primary concern was to take the cinema experience to the next level and convey a real premium impression to our visitors," explains Sebastian Schmid, General Manager Film theater at SailerGbR, operator of the Dietrich Theater. "In addition to equipping the hall with state-of-the-art LED technology, we endeavoured to use the state-of-theart picture and sound technology. That's why we opted for a Sony SRX5151-DS (Double Stack) projector and a Dolby Atmos installation with

Alcons speakers. Our customers and ourselves are very enthusiastic about the very natural and powerful reproduction in all frequency ranges. That's why we decided to equip Kino 9 with the same technology." Charlie Nedeltschev, Managing Director of Videocation, adds: "With these installations, we consider the cinemas 8 and 9 of the Dietrich Theater as two of the leading halls in Germany. There will be hardly any better sound experiences in combination with this projection quality. Of particular note is the excellent cooperation with zweiB and Alcons, who have handled this project in a very professional way. "
MPAA Celebrates 50 Years of Film Ratings The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) today released a report to celebrate the 50th anniversary of its film rating system. The report, "G" is for Golden: The MPAA Film Ratings at 50, includes the results of a new survey of American parents, never-beforereleased, comprehensive data on the nearly 30,000 films rated since 1968, and a detailed look at the history, evolution, and process behind the ratings. The MPAA's Classification and Rating Administration (CARA) was created by former MPAA President and CEO Jack Valenti and first announced on November 1, 1968. This voluntary program provided an alternative to government censorship of movies and was designed first and foremost to help parents make informed viewing choices for their children while protecting the First Amendment, the rights of filmmakers, and the creative process. "Given the extraordinary changes in our culture, entertainment, and society over the last 50 years, this anniversary feels particularly hardearned and special," said MPAA
Chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin. "We could point to many factors behind the ratings' success, but the clearest one of all comes directly from our founding mission: to maintain the trust and confidence of American parents." In conjunction with the 50-year milestone, the MPAA also released: •
A Digital Archive, featuring a collection of documents relating to the rating system's founding and evolution, as well as the Hays Code, which preceded the MPAA ratings
•
A Series of Video Vignettes, featuring CARA Chair Joan Graves answering some of the most frequently asked questions on the MPAA ratings
"We often find that when people have problems or issues with the ratings, they are based on misconceptions about our purpose and role," said Joan Graves, Chair of the Classification and Rating Administration (CARA) and MPAA Senior Vice President. "It is our hope that with the release of these materials, we can promote a greater understanding of how the MPAA ratings serve parents, young audiences, and filmmakers alike."

It will be the first time 4DX has reached the record high attendance - the fastest record since its debut in 2009 - reaching $250 million at the box office. With the current count of 20 million attendees this year, the total number of the moviegoers who have experienced 4DX since its launch in 2009 is expected to exceed 85 million. 4DX's success this year can be tied to several Hollywood blockbusters titles which have contributed to this record-breaking year. The top 7 4DX films of the year, "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom," "Avengers: Infinity War," "Black Panther," "The Meg," "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle," "Mission Impossible: Fallout," and "Ready Player One," grossed a total of $130 million combined. All 7 films exceeded a million attendees and together brought in over 10 million moviegoers."Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom," which was 4DX's highest grossing film of all time, grossed over $31 million at the worldwide box office and drew over 2.2 million moviegoers. From 2017 to 2018 the box office increasedby nearly 30 percent in the U.S. and 45 percent in Korea. A significant portion of this year's remarkable performance was also driven by the European markets. In the UK, the box office grew almost 80 percent in comparison with last October and dramatically increased over 12-fold in France, up from $1.6 million to $19.6 million. Japan ranked the highest position at the worldwide 4DX box office, earning more than $37 million and China marked the second highest position of all 59 countries. Overall, the top seven 4DX markets for 2018, which combined account for 13.1 million attendees and over 65 percent of global box office revenue, are Japan, China, Korea, France, Mexico, U.K., and the US. What Consumers Say it Takes to Bolster the Movie-Going Experience By most measures, consumers are still flocking to theatres to view movies and to savor the theatre experience. Statistics show box office numbers are up at least 10 percent from a year ago. Also, according to a recent consumer study of the theatre industry from Market Force Information, even with all the distractions in the marketplace, people are still going to theatres on a regular basis. Recently, Market Force Information conducted a study involving 12, 896 North America consumers to understand their movie-watching behaviour and attitude, including what enhances and detracts from their movie-going experience, as well as what drives them to visit a theatre rather than view movies elsewhere.
Is Streaming Really Undermining Theatres? Movie streaming has become nearly ubiquitous, with people from all age groups doing it on a regular basis. Our study data shows that more than three in four North Americans watch movies on a streaming device. Most eighty-eight percent - watch streamed content on a mobile device, such as a smartphone or tablet. And unsurprisingly, most use Netflix and Amazon to stream movies. When asked to the participant show often they had watched a movie in the auditorium of a movie theatre chain in the past year, a substantial fifty-two percent reported going at least once a month and twenty-seven percent going at least two or three times a month.
millennials are foregoing trips to the cinema in favour of streaming. In fact, millennials are frequenting the theatre more often than Gen X, where fifty-four percent indicated that they go to the movie theatre at least on a monthly basis. Baby boomers also continue to go to theatres, with forty-four percent doing soonce a month or more. [See Chart 1].
Price Matters, But so Does Seating What factors would motivate people to go to the movies more often? It's no surprise that the top three influencers on the list are related to cost savings. Affordable admission prices were cited by seventy percent, food and beverage prices by sixtyone percent, and admission coupons or discounts by fifty-nine percent. [See Chart 2].
Exhibitors are seemingly taking heed and responding to this customer qualm. According to a recent National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO) report, ticket prices have dipped a bit. The cost of going to the movies in the third quarter of 2018 fell to $8.83 in the United States, down nearly six percent from an all-time high of $9.38 in the second quarter of the year, and nearly even ($8.93) from the same quarter in 2017. These days, however, consumers are looking at theatres to deliver more than just bargain-basement prices. It is imperative to provide a unique and memorable experience to ensure they keep returning. In fact, the study reveals that comfortable seating is one of the other topranked motivating factors. Within the past decade, exhibitors have made strides to improve the movie-going experience to draw customers in and keep them coming back. There are more theatres being renovated to offer amenities such as reclining seating, in-seat service, extra sharp display and clear multi-channel sound.
Factors That Drive Viewers to Watch New Movies With the prevalence of streaming
When broken out, we discovered that fifty-seven percent of millennials, an ever-important audience where Hollywood tends to focus its attention, is going to the movies at least once a month. This also debunks the notion that December 2018 - February 2019

and the internet, it has never been easier for consumers to learn about a movie and decide whether it is worth watching. Interestingly, however,a detailed theatre study showed that watching trailers over the internet is not what tends to drive these decisions. Instead, watching a trailer in a movie theatre ranked as the No.1 factor in deciding which movies to view, with sixty-one percent citing it. This again emphasizes the impact of the movie-going experience and reinforces that marketing within the theatre is highly important. Recommendations from friends and family ranked second on the list, while TV movie trailers ranked third, movie plot descriptions ranked fourth and internet movie trailers ranked fifth. On the flip side, radio advertising and billboard advertising ranked toward the bottom. [See Chart 3].
What Draws Moviegoers to One Theatre Competing Another? The study also dug deeper to look at why consumers selected one theatre over a competitor to watch a movie recently. Convenient location was the overarching reason, but factors such as types of seating and positive previous experiences also come into play. Adding variety through more screen titles and showtimes also ranked high on the list, with nearly one-third indicating those factors helped drive their decision. [See Chart 4]. The movies that have been released in the previous year speak to this finding. This past summer saw releases such as RBG, Three Identical Strangers and Won't You Be My Neighbor - all diverse documentaries that contributed to summer box office. They were included in the
What's more, October 2018 is a prime example of how exhibitors are introducing more variety to appeal to a broad-minded audience and drive box office numbers. In the same month, Sony Pictures released Venom and Warner Bros. released A Star Is Born, which are two movies that couldn't be more different or cater to more dissimilar audiences. And both pulled in millions of dollars, contributing to the largest October weekend of all time.
The Battle for Movie Theatre Loyalty Loyalty continues to be a hardfought battle in the movie theatre industry, with just over half of consumers saying they are loyal to a particular brand and almost exclusively go there when given a choice. Subscription services such as MoviePass have also come into play which further impacts brand loyalty. Still, sixty percent belong to a theatre chain's loyalty program, so there is ample room for theatre chains to augment these programs in a way that fosters customer loyalty. With prices such a sizeable concern for moviegoers, theatres can easily engender more loyalty by offering discounts or coupons at concessions, movie schwag or free upgrades to Premium Large Format (PLF) presentation. Building that loyalty is becoming even more important as subscription services threaten to dictate where consumers go to the cinema.
Technology Is Not Drastically Altering Ticket Buying While technology has made it extremely easy to purchase movie tickets via a ticketing website, a

theatre-branded website ora mobile app, our study shows that most customers still prefer buying their tickets at the box office. This underlines the importance of interacting with a real person, and how critical it is for theatres to deliver exceptional customer service at the box office and elsewhere. Consumers are also warming to the idea of movie ticket subscription services along the lines of MoviePass and Sinimia. Exhibitors are now also following suit. Cinemark was the first domestic theatrechain to offer a subscription service and it has surpassed 350,000 members. AMC also debuted its own service and secured more than 500,000 subscribers in just four and a half months. Expect more exhibitor-run subscription services within the next year, and for them to factor heavily in how consumers acquire their tickets and where they consume movies.
Concessions and Cleanliness Drive Satisfaction Most theatre-goers purchase something from concessions, making it a particularly important touchpoint and one that can make a notable impact on the customer experience. According to the Market Force Information study, seventy-six percent of people purchased some type of concessions when visiting the theatre. Yet, one in four reported of mere dissatisfaction with concessions and the same number most likely
won't repurchase in the future. Why such dismal satisfaction? Food and beverage value is the foremost reason, followed by taste, variety and cleanliness. Also, one area that is often overlooked yet heavily factors into a customer's satisfaction or dissatisfaction is Restroom Cleanliness. More than four out of five moviegoers used the restroom during their recent visit, but onequarter was dissatisfied with the condition and maintenance of said restroom. This showcases how much a regularly maintained restroom can change a customer's perception of their overall experience. The five key areas to drive customer satisfaction within the theatre are: •
Foyer - Atmosphere and cleanliness
•
Auditorium - Audio quality, seating and cleanliness
•
Concessions - Food taste and cleanliness
•
Content - Satisfaction with the movie, as well as length and number of trailers
•
Restroom - Condition and maintenance
Satisfaction and retention can also come from fixing issues effectively when they arise, but some brands are falling short in this area. Even though few moviegoers experienced a problem within the theatre during their most recent visit, those who did felt the theatre failed to properly resolve it. Of the seven percent who encountered an issue, nearly half talked to the staff, yet two in five said they staff did nothing about it. The most common problems were disruptive moviegoers, the speed of service, cleanliness of restrooms, poor quality food and beverage items, and unfriendly staff. Through additional training and service improvements, many of these concerns can be remedied and theatres can start to quickly see the effort reflected in their customer satisfaction levels.
Experience Is the Future of Movies Since the invention of the television, exhibitors have stepped up their offerings, introducing 3D, CinemaScope, Technicolor, stadium seating and other enhancements that kept people coming through their doors in search of a truly immersive and unique experience. The exhibition offered something the television viewer couldn't get from their black-and-whiteset. Today, there are more entertainment options than ever, between streaming, binge watching and video games, but the cinema still endures and will continue to do so as long as the industry ensures each and every moviegoer gets the experience they crave and deserve.

WIM BUYENS CEO, CINIONIC
CREATING 'WOW' EXPERIENCES!
• SPECIAL STORY • How can cinema exhibitors captivate moviegoers while remaining profitable - today and in the future? Wim Buyens and his team at the new Cinionic venture are on a mission to help exhibitors engage their audiences with 'wow!' experiences.
Wim Buyens has many years of experience in the global cinema arena. In November 2007, he took the helm of Barco's cinema division, which he successfully put on the map as the global leader in digital cinema projectors. More than a technology front runner, Barco also became a thought leader in the cinema industry. Wim Buyens' appointment as chairman of the Advanced Imaging Societyin 2017 further solidified Barco's leadership reputation. In December 2017, Barco announced its plan to join forces with ALPD and China Film Group (CFG) to deliver the future of cinema. Wim Buyens became the CEO of the new joint venture, which was officially introduced as Cinionic at CinemaCon in April 2018. The Cinionic legal entity was established in October 2018. Barco has been a market leader for years. Why the change? For ten years, Barco has worked hard, together with its customers, to develop innovative digital cinema projectors. We were delighted that our efforts and our customer centricity were rewarded with a market share of over 50%. The market was favourable, of course: digital cinema replaced 35mm film in no time. As the switch to digital reaches end-of-game, the next ten years will look completely different. That's why we started thinking about what would come next, and about how we could embrace - or rather, anticipate - the new developments.
there is still room for growth. Millions of people in Asia, the Middle East and Latin America haven't had the chance to enjoy 'wow' experiences in cinemas yet. I therefore think we can expand the number of screens from 180,000 screens today to 220,000 within five to ten years. Simply installing new screens, however, is no longer enough for the market to prosper. We're living in an experience economy. People are constantly looking for excitement and engagement. As a result, exhibitors must deliver increasingly immersive entertainment to captivate today's moviegoers. Doing so requires investments - not easy to find, as we do not anticipate a second round of Virtual Print Fees (VPFs) from Hollywood studios to drive the next technology upgrades. In a post-VPF world, exhibitors need affordable access to new technology. Barco realized that if it wanted to help its customers, it would have to come up with more than just superb engineering and market-leading products. We needed new business models, too. Upon realizing that, we had two choices: to continue our business as usual, or build on our strengths and market share to develop tomorrow's cinema solutions.
Barco chose to drive the change. How? We decided to reinforce the Barco brand and build a solution around it, together with partners who share our passion for cinema, our vision and our ambitions. So, we combined Barco's technology heritage and its expertise in the movie industry withthat of other experts. ALPD specializes in laser projection technology, leading the transformation from lamps to laser (retrofit). China Film Co. (CFG) is a giant in the movie-making business that produces and distributes content in close collaboration with Hollywood. Joining forces with CFG opens the door to the content market. Barco has no ambition to be a content company, but CFG's know-how is key as more and more movietitles are distributed and promoted in specific formats, like thepremium large format (PLF). CGS, the remastered content package that they developed in line with international standards, responds to that trend. The joint know-how of Barco, ALPD and CFG makes us unique. Moreover, we currently see consolidation among cinema players because customers want more holistic

Cinema was one of the cornerstones of Barco, but Cinionic is fully committed to cinema. Thanks to that dedication, the Barco technology and the experienced team that stayed on board, our customers are confident that they will be able to rely on us for many years to come. This confidence is crucial in today's dynamic cinema market. So, what is the mission statement of the new Cinionic venture? The first pillar of our mission statement is described in our tagline: 'Experiences. Delivered'. It highlights the fact that cinema exhibitors can count on Cinionicto help them surprise and delight their customers. Like I explained before, 'wow' experiences are fundamental in today's experience economy. This is true especially in cinema, as the industry has to compete with the many screens and exciting content available at consumers' fingertips. Technology enables exhibitors to make the cinema experience more interactive. Premium cinema, for example, is booming today as it offers movie-goers a chance to share a unique experience with friends. But more than technology, you also talked about services and new business models. Can you tell us more? Indeed, we want to combine innovative cinema technologies with unique service models to guarantee exhibitors absolute peace of mind, so that they can focus on their core business: exciting their audiences. The Barco brand has always been synonymous with reliability and maximum uptime. The laser technology that's conquering the market is exceptionally reliable and future-proof while freeing exhibitors from the lamp-related hassle and helping them save energy. We're

services like warranty programs, preventative maintenance and remote monitoring of projector solutions. To add to that peace of mind, we're also working on flexible financing options. Instead of making big up-front investments in projector solutions, exhibitors can choose to pay for our solutions based on usage, such as per hour or per lumen. In this way, they swap up-front investments for running expenses and fine-tune their projector portfolio according to their usage and needs. Moreover, this model ensures that they are always using the latest projection technology. Of course, every exhibitor has to decide for themselves whether to invest in projectors, maintain their projection stack themselves or leave everything up to us. Whatever option they
proof solution. What emerging trends do you see in cinema technology, and how is Cinionic responding? Barco is a technology company and we've always been a front runner in many fields. Cinionic keeps that focus on technology. In the past few months, we have elaborated on our Vision 2020 projection concept, which looks at the future possibilities inprojection. Laser is a given moving forward; we believe that new innovations will be laser-driven. At this year's CinemaCon, we showcased what we think will open up the promise of HDR in cinemas: a high-contrast HDR laser projector prototype with light steering technology. The technology is special in that it effectively throws more
• SPECIAL STORY • light at parts of the image that require high brightness. In this way, black is much blacker and white is much whiter than with normal laser projection. In addition to the image quality benefits, light steering significantly reduces power consumption. Are exhibitors looking for greener projection solutions? With energy prices sky rocketing, every exhibitor is interested in cutting power consumption. Cinema laser projectors are much more energy-efficient than traditional lamp-based projectors: they can cut energy costs in half. That's only one aspect of how laser projection is greener. By eliminating the need for lamps, there are far fewer trucks on the road delivering new lamps.
Lamps, by the way, may also contain hazardous waste. Cinionic wants to be a responsible, sustainable company, so we set great store by the benefits of laser. Our retrofit offering also aligns withour sustainability efforts. Thanks to the modular design of our projectors and our unique retrofit technology, exhibitors can replace the lamp housings in their existing projectors with laser modules. This is a great way to get rid of energy-consuming xenon bulbs and lengthen the lifetimes of cinema projectors while ensuring consistent light output. Looking into the future: what will Cinionic offer five years from now? Right now, we're focusing on our
core: visualization technology - and laser in particular - remains our first priority, combined with services that ensure peace of mind. But we are a cinema and not a projector company, so we are open to other technologies, too. Our starting point will always be what makes sense for the exhibitors, as we're here to help them excite and engage their audiences. If they want us to integrate our technology with new features like virtual reality or sensory experiences, we are happy to do that. We are looking into all possible technologies and solutions without, of course, compromising on our drive to remain ahead of the curve. That too, enables our customers to offer the 'wow' experiences that their audiences have come to expect from them.
First Private Cinema hall in the Middle East Features Barco Laser Projection Cinionic has teamed up with progressive movie exhibitor Lunar Cinemas in Oman to offer a one-of-a-kind moviegoing experience that allows guests to choose a specific film and viewing time - complete with in-seat dining - for private parties.
Partners in Innovation "We are very proud of our unique offering and pleased that Barco Laser technology is a key part of our new venture," comments Khalid Al Nabhani, CEO of Lunar Cinemas. "We have trusted in Barco as the cinema industry leader for many years. With Cinionic's support, we are exceeding our expectations and using our revenue to grow Lunar Cinemas." Known for its pioneering developments in laser technology, Cinionic (as Barco) has collaborated with many innovative exhibitors and
filmmakers, continually striving to offer something new and different to the moviegoing public.
Making Cinema a Special Occasion "We share our customer's passion for royally treating moviegoers with experiences that are special enough for celebrations," comments Serge Plasch, Chief Commercial Officer for Cinionic. "Private halls are a great way to cater to their desire for exclusivity, and Lunar Cinemas can rely on Barco Laser projectors for superior quality befitting these occasions." Lunar Cinemas features the first laser-powered cinema screen in Oman. Located at the Al Araimi Shopping Center, the complex will have three VIP suites with 42 seats and dining facilities, as well as a public hall seating 80 spectators.
Quality and Economy for Cosy Auditoriums Barco Smart Laser projectors offer the optimum solution for bringing the premium image quality of laser projection to even the smallest, most exclusive cinema auditoriums. Minimal cost, hassle and risk making them an ideal fit for growing multiplexes.

Iraqi Cinemas:
A Great Modern Revival Being established to mainly revive the movie theatres offering new international releases in modern halls, equipped with all the latest techniques, movie lovers can now go enjoy their favourite shows at the Baghdad Mall in ALKARKH, consisting of 8 screens equipped with the latest technologies that include the Atmos system in the MAX and VIP theatres.
Post-1990, cinemas in Iraq graded down as a result to the mass economic siege over the country caused by Kuwaiti invasion. Some cinemas completely closed and turned into warehouses, companies and some of them turned into "commercial theatres". While others showed old and consumed movies, situations were growing rather inclined on a precarious notion as there was no import for new movies after the political change in 2003 which was held by the American and Iraqi coalition. The situation got worse when there was no much interest shown towards the development of the cinema industry or importing new movies, also the ministry of culture which is responsible for cinema affairs in the country was and still seems unable to build theatres or produce movies due

between narrated long stories, documentary and narrated short stories. The outcome of this demonstration was to restart 5 important theatres in Baghdad but this project didn't take effect any sooner.
• SPECIAL STORY • Iraqi Cinemas was established to revive the movie theatres offering new international releases in modern halls, equipped with all the latest techniques so movie lovers can enjoy their favourite shows. In 2010, after a long break, Iraqi hunt club was the first Iraqi Cinemas which consisted of two modern halls that attracted the attention of many especially families who enjoy watching new Arabic and foreign movies also the 3D cinema was a pleasant surprise for the Iraqi people. In 2012, a second branch was opened in Erbil at the Royal Mall with 3 Screens and 100 seats each, as the first contemporary cinema that is digitally equipped on the whole. The cinema attracted the youth who were eager to watch the latest movies of their favourite stars, which was then followed by families who couldcome and enjoy the movies in 2D & 3D as well. Another location was added to the Iraqi Cinemas which was thereby established in 2013 at Al Mansour Mall

STAN LEE
Legend of Marvel Empire Having started out by filling the inkwells at a pulp magazine and boomed up spawning a $11bn juggernaut, the ever-smiling Stan Lee has always been hard at work, marshalling his crack team of writers and illustrators and deploying his supergroup of un-jolly green giants and soulful silver aliens. The recent demise of the legendary Marvel Comics writer, editor, and publisher leaves not just the crazy comic fans but the world in massive grief.
Born Stanley Lieber to Jewish immigrant parents, Lee started out on the bottom rung of the pulp magazine business, filling the inkwells at Timely Comics in New York. He went on to become a brand name, a juggernaut, a oneman industry, with all that this entails. On the page, for public consumption, he was always "Stan the Man" or "Smilin' Stan", at once lovable uncle and creative dynamo. But from backstage came tales of a less edifying alter-ego. It was said that Lee took credit, stole fortunes and relegated key collaborators - such as Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko - to the role of insignificant bit players. Everybody and everything was grist to his mill,
TW-36
December 2018 - February 2019
• SPECIAL STORY • first fuelling and then burnishing his reputation as the most influential popular artist of the 20th century. Though he initially became famous as a comics writer, Lee's writing is perhaps the least-celebrated aspect of his career and legacy. He's mostly renowned as the co-creator of hugely successful characters like Spider-Man, the Hulk, Thor, and the Fantastic Four, even though he probably had less input into them than his collaborating artists, Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby. Lee was also known for acting as the publisher and public face of Marvel after 1971, a role that led naturally to his numerous cameos in the gigantically successful Marvel films. He became virtually an iconic property himself, best known as a kind of art, rather than as an artist. Lee's comical career began in 1939 when the 17-year-old took an assistant job at Timely Comics, the predecessor to Marvel. Born Stanley Martin Lieber, he adopted Stan Lee
as a pen name when he started writing comic book stories, and later made it his legal name. His style of scripting - giving the artist a brief synopsis, then returning to nail down the details after the story was drawn - would later be dubbed "The Marvel Method," and offered collaborators and co-creators like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko enormous creative input into the work. Later, there would be sometimes bitter conflicts about precisely who created - or co-created - which characters, though the work-for-hire nature of their contracts meant that none of them retained the rights. From student anti-war protests in Spider-Man to anti-Semitism in X-Men, he explored profound themes through the prism of escapist entertainment. Today, the Marvel universe extends across merchandise, theme parks and a seemingly endless assemblage of tent-pole Hollywood blockbusters.
Lee largely moved on from writing long ago, but in appreciating his contributions to comics and the importance of his history, it's worth revisiting his old speech bubbles, where, in spite of time's tumultuous turning, Lee's legacy and the impacton the world of both comic books and entertainment remains vast, enduring and undeniable. News of his death prompted eulogies all-round the globe but he will surely stay undying through his work for the generations to come further more.

Changing Trends in Cinema and Entertainment Marketing
Panelists: Rahul Puri – Managing Director, Mukta A2 Cinemas Devang Sampat- Director, Strategic Initiatives, Cinepolis Dharmesh Datta – Vice President & Head Marketing, PVR Group Mohan Umrotkar – CEO, Carnival Cinemas Vikas Suri – Director, Kitchnrama Food Service Equipment Moderator: Saurabh Varma – CMO, Inox Leisure
Overview: The entertainment industry is projected to be more than US$ 62.2 billion by FY25. Over 1200 films are released every year in India and the marketers look for innovative ways to draw the audience to the theatres. New media is being extensively used to market films. Movie websites, social media, mobile and other tools are new media tools used for increasing revenues. Concession sales are crucial to a movie theatre for it to survive and remain profitable. Concession profits contribute a major percentage

of a theatre’s profits and a solid concessions strategy ensures long-term business success. This panel discussion looked at how Indian cinema is marketing films, concessions and other aspects compared to that of the global film marketing and as to how the coming of digital content changed or could change the scenario.
The Complete Marketing Strata Saurabh Varma, in his initial remarks,
pointed on the various myths that are being worked on the marketing concept when compared to the international trade. Comparing diversely on the various new means of promoting a film or marketing that the market trends are out with, it is an evident fact that we still lack to adapt to the changes that the new media has brought in. The traditional ways on following the streaks of either depending on the trailers to be run successfully or advertisements through various mediums or inclusions of a song still play an active role in the world of marketing and ultimately settles down to the basics while there are new means evolved in the market. The movies are being promoted and marketed in all possible ways but it still lacks the number of people coming to the cinema to watch the movie is still hits the lower scale. Though new media is emerging on a rapid note yet there are evident differences between what the
filmmaker or the production marketeers perceive to that of what the exhibitors are trying to do. The recent revolution called “New Media” has created an independent digital universe which is so compelling in its engagement that Saurabh exclaims on how it’s just taken the cinema-going experience to a new height. With this, Dharmesh adds that the marketing budgets of about 20% to 30% are spent on new media as it is engaging people in their personal space, leading to much more efficient results than that of the conventional media. Data analytics is another sector that has taken the game to a whole new level with detailed peripherals and the genres that the consumer prefers today. The new media has created its own way of reaching out to the consumer beyond the brick and mortar of a physical cinema. Digital media gives you coverage and cross-pollination for which an illustrated example of how Facebook sees the cinema industry as a very unique way of engaging with people was put in. And the various path-breaking innovation that the technology is breaking today, Devang, having years of experience in the business says there are a lot of new jagrans on marketing and strongly believe in keeping it simple as India is on its peak to increase the count of multiplexes year after year with the single screens phasing by and the new multiplexes coming into the business is still unpredictable. Operating over 5600 screens 14 countries globally he exclaims that the top 100 screens in terms of admission out of these 5600 for Cinepolis come from India. Getting
the basics right than pumping huge amounts of money into various experimental ways of marketing is something to be focused upon as India in itself gives a huge opportunity to the cinema markets. The Customer satisfaction score in the biggest marketing tool for the cinema business and must be kept at prime focus in order to deliver the experiences they look for. Rahul Puri, says there is a lot more competition than there used to be and with the advent of digital platforms like Amazon prime, Netflix etc., certainly means that the highest paying gambit of our audience has more options to look forward to rather than approaching cinemas for the same today. He affirms on how the exhibition centres are required to think strongly about the kind of promotion that they ought to do. Mohan Umroatkar throws light on the recent inception of Movies Pass. He says it has been introduced keeping an eye on India as a market as it is very price sensitive. With entertainment being a discretionary expenditure the product has to be good and the same goes for the movie as well. Only then can the exhibitors compel the audience to come to watch the movie as it time invested by the movie-goers that are equally crucial. The operators are placed in tier 2 or tier 3 in the market which is more sensitive in terms of
pricing. In order to bring more audience to the cinemas, the concept of movie card is being introduced where opportunity is given to the audience to come and watch unlimited movies with a minimum rate that the audience as a market prefers. As the statistical growth is rather stunted to more than the average population on going to cinemas products like movie cards would surely encourage the crowd to venture out more towards watching movies regularly. As the price point is the main deterrent for the moviegoers from going to cinemas or not, the infusion of such concepts surely strikes a deal for the same. As this measure is actively taken by Carnival Cinemas, Mohan encourages other exhibitors to make a similar move as well. Coming back to the food and beverage sections, the classic popcorn and cola are now being side-lined but yet trying to keep up with the competition to many other new variants introduced in the market. Vikas Suri, shares a few facts stating the days are long gone where regular popcorn was sold. Today, the latest buzz lies in ‘NO NUDE POPCORN’. People want something more exciting and there are lots of variants introduced today like siracha popcorn, peri peri popcorn which is rather exciting to munch on along while watching a movie as a
December 2018 - February 2019
TW-51
competition between the cinema exhibitors. He says the popcorn sales alone gives 85% of the margin and more than 50% of the total margin comes only from the food and beverage counters. Devang states on how efforts are to be put in to indulge into the foreign markets only to get the people coming to cinemas, while it is easier on that note to get the audience coming in India. Things are changing in India as new ways of marketing are set out with loyalty programmes are run giving lots of opportunities to do innovative marketing. The foreign market is rather matured in deterring the data analysis whereas in India it is difficult as it is always unpredictable. Steps are taken to work very hard with the production houses in order to pull people into the cinemas. Dharmesh, on effective ways of competitive marketing says it mainly depends on the consumer experience that brings them back but very much essential to create that brand recall
for their respective brands with ways through content led marketing keeping the consumer immersed with the brand even beyond the cinema and to some extent, new media is making these innovative plans into reality. Aggregators like Book My Show, Paytm are also helping the ecosystem keep in touch with the new updates as what’s coming next. Devang claims that experience would eventually win. India being more of a tolerant economy and the consumers being more price sensitive exhibitors need to keep upgrading themselves. On the same note, a new cinema generates higher footfall and this is due to the experience they get and pricing would take a backstab if the cinema does not get its regular upgrade as new innovation comes in time to time. Comparing the conditions five years back, Rahul, who has been innovatively working on concepts like VR, talks on immersive marketing says there will always be a market for static viewing
experience and that will always remain. In addition to that exhibitors must pay attention at the immersive technology quite seriously.
Takeaway A lot of marketing strategies are being executed around mostly in the A-tier metro centres and when talked about B and C tier cities, Exhibitors are seen having put in huge efforts. Until the movies are not going to set in at regular intervals the people would not be encouraged to come to the cinemas at regular intervals. Profit prospects could rather fare well if the cinema could expand its business in tier 2 and tier 3 levels of the market as well. B and C tier markets are researched to be very rich markets with enough potential. With Food marketing breaking the industry trends, One must be sure of the concessional menus to be fairly tempting so as to let the consumers desire to actually taste and try the product.

December 2018 - February 2019
Overview: This session will dive deep throwing light on the next generation disruptive digital cinema technologies that are reshaping the cinema entertainment business. The studios and distributors and exhibitors are excited about the role of cloud technology in global cinema distribution along with newer technologies in cinema automation, premium large format,
projection and audio technologies moulding the cinema viewing experience. Join the thought leaders from the entertainment technology industry for an insider’s look into the emerging technologies disrupting everything from the creative process to business models and consumer behaviour.
build a much more efficient projector on the whole. It also retains the capacity to work in an ambient temperature of a typical projection booth at about 25°C. Therefore, this also allows us to save tremendous cost on the projector, as there is no external cooling required to get the lasers down to a sub-ambient temperature
Experiencing Disruption Ever Since Time
Senthil Kumar, known as the person who revolutionized the digital cinema projection space in India says that more change is seen than ever before in the cinema industry ever since digitalization hit the markets over the last 15 or 20 or 30 years. On one side you have the greater advantage of the consistent projection quality with much affordable distribution but on the other side you have the higher costs of digital equipment and what’s worse is the high maintenance and replacement costs and required reinvestments for upgrading the same with newer technologies time to time. But digital cinema is also something that’s allowing a lot more innovation so to be called the digital cinema 2.0. A platform called ‘QubeWire’ is built today that lets one send movies all around the world through the cloud or the internet. As he explains about the cinema Industry being at the cusp of change again from the regular digital cinema projectors to laser-
Talking of disruption, It has been a part of cinemas and has been going on for many years right from the time stereo sound was introduced in cinemas, followed by DTS and Dolby Digital. Sriram further adds that cinema as an industry has been experiencing disruption and to the credit of everybody in this industry the new technologies have been embraced enthusiastically by everyone right from the production houses, distributors, the exhibitors and to the person who’s paying for the ticket. Don throws light on Christie’s pure RGB laser projectors stating that the exhibitors have choices now which is considered a positive approach. What Christie has elected to do is build the laser projectors using pure red green and blue lasers. This gives several advantages in terms of the quantity of the laser projectors, colour, performance, contrast and perhaps most importantly in terms of the life of the product. Laser projectors are now built that could last 30000 hours and still retain most of their brightness throughout. On the same note, the aspect that’s really interesting is that laser projectors are made more affordable. The recent study on the first generation projectors, the statistics derived states that the second generation projectors have driven Christie to analyse better cost-efficient projectors. The second generation RGB Laser Technology System uses direct emitting green diodes which is the most expensive colour in a laser projector and these diodes allow to
based projectors, he also states that there’s a huge advantage that LED screens seem to offer with 10 times the brightness. So all of the advantages that seem to offer are towards making the movie-going experience a total recall one, but yet at an incredibly high price and with certain limitations of size and the fixed combination of resolution which might be a little disadvantageous for designing an auditorium. On the other hand, sharing mutual aims to ultimately get people onto the seats, Raj elaborates on the two major disruptions looked upon. One is improving the movie-going experience and the other is reducing the cost of delivering the respective experience. Indian and worldwide cinema has been greatly resilient to these changes and have taken the changes sportively and moved forward making it better all the time. As far as Dolby is consumed, it is in the business of improving the experience that people get and is more noted for the audio part of achieving 450 screens of atmos which have been one of the major disruptions but is also helping people enjoy the experience more in cinemas. Dolby is also working on the visual sector of it so that it could offer a complete experience that the customers look for. The Dolby vision for cinema which is the new

generation video format is being introduced, making Dolby cinemas basically lie on essential pillars, ie., Atmos- the best possible, audio experiences that one can get to their cinema, Dolby vision- which is believed to present a picture to the audience where he would find himself being a part of the narration and of course to get the immersive experience to the extent of having the look and feel of the things. Sachin, further adds that the biggest disruption done in India is the software solution and the case of operations that we have provided with the TMS (Theatre Management Solution) as well as the network operation centre which is already running all over the country. There are over 1000 screens that are running on this platform and hereby GDC intends to take this disruption to the next level because as observed, at some stage, the ease of operations needs to be given to the cinema owners where they have the flexibility to play the film of their choice whenever they feel like. Introduction to cinema automation 2.0 has been a great innovation wherein this solution comprises of 3 parts comprising of a central server which acts for playback as well as for storage and just one server that plays back the content across 14 screens. A much better part is the latest generation of servers that have been introduced now has an inbuilt memory called the cine-cache which gives the cinema owner the option to store the content as it is being played constantly from that screen if in case there is some kind of problem that he might face during operations. Sachin says GDC has been compatible with any other pause solution that deals with the operational segment. Lastly, he also emphasises on the power management as well as checking the light and sound on screen. This technology will help check and ensure that corrective action can be taken by the technical team.

John says the cinema industry as a whole is facing disruption from the outside with booming home entertainment subscription services like Netflix and Amazon, has impacted global markets on a variable basis. The industry as a whole needs to improve its projection technology, it’s seeding, its experience for the customer which unfortunately at that stage gets a bit expensive to adopt in order to combat against disruptions that are coming from the outside. Raj says what industry will look at are the returns on investments. So basically in today’s digital world, the exhibitors have got to run if one really want to move ahead and the industry has shown that resilience in terms of adopting the technologies, otherwise, survival of the cinema industry could tough as Netflix will take over if one doesn’t keep improving the experience. Nico believes that technology has to not only deliver the extra value with much needful competing entertainment options but ideally deliver on the cost side as well. The cost of technology has to be lower and made much affordable. There are a lot of different segments and a lot of experimentation in India. A lot of examples from the very premium to just enough and the technology has to decide on what you aim for on the cost side or the extra value side.
Sachin adds that the quality of display units in telephones or tablets or mobile phones have become so efficient, that there is a burning need to entice the consumers to actually come and watch films in the cinemas. While there are streaming technologies available today, the experience in the cinema is yet a class apart. There was a stage where constant researching and innovating creative ways was put in to improvise segments like seating and sound about two decades ago. Today in India, exhibitors need to go a step further where they really need to improvise on what they would finally offer the consumers, right from the time they may enter the cinemas to their exit. It has ought to be a wow experience indeed! A lot of feedback from the customers is necessary to understand what sort of operations one would like to have for their respective cinema. Just one strategy cant be relied upon today to fit across all odds in the country.
Takeaway For cinemas to remain relevant, we as a market need to continuously improve the experience and this takes disruptive technology to make it happen. What we need to look at with the next disruptive technology is the affordability. The exhibitors too have to look at what they have in existence and when would be the right time to upgrade the same to the next level.
