My recent visit to IOWA to write about ‘The World’s oldest operating cinema’ drove me towards the Palms Theatres & IMAX by Fridley Theatres alongside in Des Moines, USA as well. The theatre is marvellous with the latest technology and enhanced offering for cinemagoers featuring IMAX with Laser and a 75-foot Fridley branded Laser XL Digital (XLD) auditorium incorporating state-of-the-art laser projection and utilising a cutting-edge Dolby Atmos sound system, complete with 56 speakers. Grand Cinema Sunshine in Ikebukuro, Tokyo recently held its grand opening with 12 auditoriums; titled ‘Japan’s largest IMAX cinema’. The flagship cinema is one of the largest complexes in Japan to feature advanced technologies and luxurious amenities to enhance the moviegoing experience. Post Laser Projections, Immersive Sound, 4D Seating and Virtual Reality (VR), IMAX still remains to be at the top on a promising note. At least that’s what the tech gurus are saying. What remains to be seen is the extent of growth and level of maturity it can achieve. Speaking of Luxury in the cinema exhibition industry, Shaw Theatres has pulled out all the stops with its latest cinema at Jewel Changi Airport, Singapore, which will boast a number of new offerings for its cinemagoers. Shaw Theatres Jewel is here with the first DTS:X sound capable halls in Singapore (selected halls), and a new exclusive premium moviegoing option (Lumiere) and being Singapore’s first next-generation IMAX hall featuring IMAX with Laser and Singapore’s first dedicated family hall (Dreamers) as its two new offerings as well. The fastest growing multiplex chain of the country, INOX Leisure, launched 4 new properties in the prime locations of Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Lucknow and Jalandhar. Whats all the more exciting is that the mega brand had signed a deal with CJ 4DPLEX earlier this year to bring the first ScreenX to India and now launched the country’s first ScreenX theatre at its multiplex in Inorbit Mall, Mumbai. The ScreenX technology offers a panoramic 270- degree movie watching experience to the audience allowing them to go beyond theme of the traditional movie screen, utilising a proprietary system to expand select scenes of feature films to the left and right walls on each side. ScreenX is the world’s first multi-projection theatre technology designed to enhance the movie-going experience. Meanwhile, completing it 800 screen count, PVR Cinemas; the front-runner in the business has yet again topped the list with its brand new multiplexes in GMS Mall, Madhya Pradesh; Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan and the Preston Mall in Hyderabad. NY Cinemas, a venture by Ajay Devgn, launched its first thematic multiplex in one of the rising cities in the Indian heartland, Ratlam. The Big Cine Expo 2019, recently held at Bombay Exhibition Center (NESCO) in Mumbai, was yet another grand success, making it world’s second largest expo for cinema exhibition. The 2-day event had everything for cinema exhibitors and a lot of networking opportunities for the cinema exhibition ecosystem. Post the success of 2019, Big Cine Expo 2020 will move back to Chennai (Chennai Trade Centre) for its 5th grand edition dated on 8-9 September 2020. TheatreWorld is once again the media partner at the major trade shows: ExpoCine, Brazil (1-4 October, 2019), ShowEast, Florida (14-17 October, 2019), AIMC - Australian International Movie Convention, Gold Coast (20-23 October) and ECM - Emerging Cinema Markets, Istanbul (19-21 November, 2019). Cineworld Eastbourne Becomes Europe's First All-RGB Laser Cineplex, UK Eastbourne Cineworld has become Europe's first all-RGB laser cineplex after opting for Christie RealLaser technology. The UK cinema's eight auditoriums have all been fitted with Christie's CP2315-RGB and CP2320-RGB offerings - bringing unprecedented levels of brightness, colour, and contrast to create unmatched cinematic performance. Christie RGB laser projection systems have also been installed at a brace of other UK Cineworld-owned locations, further demonstrating the exhibitor's commitment to RGB laser technology. "We're delighted to offer our customers a fantastic visual cinematic experience with Christie RealLaser technology, which has become known for its excellent performance and reliability," says Kiril Enikov, Head of Technical for Cineworld. "We aim to provide the best place to watch a movie, and by investing in the latest high performance technologies, we feel we are continuing to deliver on this goal. Featuring CineLife electronics and RealLaser illumination, the models both excel in image quality, operational lifetime and overall cost. Their compact, all-in-one form factors do not require any external chillers or parts for a seamless installation into any booth. The Cineworld Group has also placed its trust in Christie at The Picturehouse Central in the Piccadilly area of London, where its screen has been upgraded with a RealLaser projection system. In addition, the O2 Greenwich Superscreen - one of the largest screens in Europe - is powered by a Christie RGB laser projection system. "It's thrilling to us

"With its RealLaser illumination technology, Christie's projectors comply with DCI standards and delivers more than 95 percent of Rec. 2020 without filtering or colour correction. Premium HGA 1.7 Screens: The New Standard for Laser Projection Premium HGA 1.7 is engineered for high output projector systems that require superior light diffusion properties. Strong/MDI's Lead Chemist, Carmen Simion, states: "Although the new screen is part of the Premium HGA family, the 1.7 coating has unique properties to enhance light scattering and mitigate speckling, a common issue in laser projection systems." The proprietary technology behind the HGA coating results in a whiter looking screen with an ultra-wide viewing angle. Images appear bright and even across the surface while colours in all parts of the spectrum are deep and rich. The immersive experience is heightened when Premium HGA 1.7 is combined with Strong/MDI's new micro-perforation pattern that ensures the optimal level of light reflectance and sound transmission. The enhanced perforation alignment also reduces moirĂŠ fringes, an interference pattern caused by the interaction of the perforation holes with the pixel grid. "As an added advantage, HGA coatings are very resistant and long-lasting. They are also competitively priced, a worthwhile investment for any exhibitor looking to maximize the cost-quality balance" says Francois Barrette, Vice President at Strong/MDI Screen Systems.

The latest version of the state-of-the-art TMS provides AAM's exhibitor customers with advanced automation options and support for the newest projectors and technology in digital cinema."AAM actively develop and improve Screenwriter to ensure it continues to streamline essential operational services for cinemas, while also providing them with a platform for further innovation." noted Mark Kamiyama, Head of Global Sales at AAM parent company LuxinRio International. "We are proud to provide a robust, user-friendly system that allows our customers all around the world to continually drive efficiency and innovation." Screenwriter is the most powerful, flexible, and widely deployed TMS in the world, and manages millions of screenings per year on over 45,000 cinema screens. It enables cinema staff to schedule features, trailers, and advertisements, monitor screens, and control playback all from one intuitive interface. Additional features and functionality available from the latest release include: Screenwriter can now automatically shut off the projector lamp for shows where no tickets have been sold. Through Screenwriter's existing integrations with all major Point of Sale (POS) systems, it can access a feed of real-time ticket sales, and send instructions to the projector at a pre-configured time to shut the lamp off if no tickets have been sold. This represents a significant energy saving for exhibitors, as projectors can be run for hundreds of hours to empty auditoriums every year. The latest version of Screenwriter benefits from intelligent automations that keep shows running on schedule, and help cinemas provide their audiences with great experiences at every screen. The TMS

TW-14

September-November 2019

can now dynamically remove content from the beginning of the pre-show in order to prevent any scheduled shows from overlapping, and minimise disruption to the audience. Screenwriter has added support for dual KDM (Key Delivery Message) ingestion, which is sometimes necessary for premium screenings. Certain object based audio formats, for example, are encrypted separately from the DCP (Digital Cinema Package) and require a second KDM to unlock the audio on an Outboard Media Block (OMB) for use. To afford exhibitors with the greatest flexibility when making hardware decisions, AAM maintain Screenwriter's compatibility with all the latest cinema hardware, and have recently added support for Barco Series 4 projectors and GDC SR1000 server.

For 90 years, Harkness Screens has been at the forefront of cinema screen technology, currently employing over 150 people in six different countries. Founded by master draper Andrew Harkness in 1929, Harkness Screens soon became a leading force in the world of cinema. Just two short years after the company's conception, the founder would sadly pass away, leaving the company to his only son, Tom. It was under the guidance of Tom Harkness that the company would continue to develop a reputation as the dominant name in cinema screen production. In the early 1940s, Tom Harkness pioneered the use of PVC as a means to replace the heavy woven fabrics that had initially made Harkness a name in cinematic circles. In 1952 Harkness was bought by the Rank Organisation and incorporated into Rank Audio Visual in 1960. Joining massive names in cinema such as Pathe and Odeon, Harkness found themselves located in the famous Gate Studios; and thus, in the epicenter of British movie making. Within a few years, Harkness had new neighbours, a start-up called Rank Xerox. More key developments in cinema screen technology would come for Harkness. Creating a new cinema experiences with the placement of speakers behind the screens and kept up with the growth of cinema screens by developing the Perlux screen that provided a brighter and more vivid presentation. The Perlux was Harkness' first ever coated gain screen and propelled Harkness to become the world's leading screen maker. By the mid1990s Harkness had already begun developing the technology for 3D cinema screens. Predicting that there would be a demand for this technology during the multiplex boom, screen coating technology formed a major part of Harkness' development of the Spectral polarised silver screen.

TW-16

September-November 2019

The Spectral screen helped to maintain Harkness' status as the world's leading suppliers of cinema screens. Harkness began to expand in late 1999, completing the purchase of a European competitor based in France. Following the expansion into Europe, Harkness then proceeded to open manufacturing facilities in the USA, India and China. Harkness today continues to be a leader in screen technology, having had thousands of their large screens installed in over 130 countries. Always developing innovations in cinema technology, Harkness is currently developing screen surfaces for the future of laser projection systems. "To be the CEO of Harkness during our 90th birthday celebrations is an incredibly proud moment for me personally." Mark Ashcroft, Harkness Screens CEO, said, "When Andrew Harkness set up this company, I don't think that even he could have imagined what we have gone on to achieve." Every time that there has been a key development in cinema screen technology, Harkness has been at the forefront of it, or at the very least, extremely close behind. Whilst we do intend to enjoy our 90th anniversary, we will not be slowing down. "We are continuing to develop new technology that we believe will continue to revolutionise the cinematic experience. I really enjoy getting to travel the world and see what people think of our screens and it is extremely humbling to see the likes of The Rock and Kevin Hart present their latest projects on our screens at events like CinemaCon," said Ashcroft. "It's been a tremendous amount of fun to go back through the history books and learn more about our founder and to find out more about the journey that has led us to be the leading cinema screen producers in the world." Chief Technology Officer, David Harrison said. "I'd always wondered what the faces of our founding fathers looked

like and I'm delighted to say now that I have. Andrew and Tom Harkness can now be described as pioneers of cinema screen technology, but I scarcely think that even they couldn't have imagined what we have gone on to achieve. "We go to every major event in the cinema calendar and none of that is luck." Harrison said, "For the past 90 years we have developed a reputation amongst the cinema industry and our screens are widely regarded as the best in the industry and we hope to be successful for at least another 90 years. "Celebrating 90 years of innovation Harkness will be celebrating not only their own achievements, but also celebrating the last 90 years of cinema that has been projected onto their screens. Harkness aim to have a continuous input at the forefront of screen and presentation technology. The 90th birthday celebrations will see several small changes to the Harkness brand. A new Technicolor logo will be used on all branding and will represent the startling colours that Harkness screens have brought to cinema goers for the best part of a century. There will also be an increased commitment to engaging with the moviegoers. This will be done through the production of online content that will tell the Harkness story in more detail and tell the story of their hardworking and committed members of staff.

CinemaNext Completes its First European 4th Gen Projector Installation at Neocine Thader in Murcia, Spain CinemaNext, the European specialist in cinema exhibitor services announced the completion of its first fourth generation laser-powered 4K RGB projection system installation at

the Neocine cinema in the Thader shopping mall in Murcia (Spain). The SP4K-25 Barco projector with Alchemy server setup at Neocine marks a European first by CinemaNext and its Valencia-based services centre since Cinionic began selling the new Barco series 4 platform in April 2019. "As moviegoers are increasingly demanding in terms of services and image quality, we are committed to bringing the latest technological innovation to our cinemas," explains Manuel Berna, President & CEO of the Neocine cinema chain (Carceserna, S.L.). "We aim to offer moviegoers the best cinematic experience with 4K RGB-Laser technology, which is HFR-HDR ready, while significantly reducing our operating costs with this environmental-friendly and energyefficient projector. This strategy goes far beyond image and sound since we also called upon CinemaNext to enhance our cinema lobbies with the

implementation of their digital signage solutions." "Over the last few years, we have witnessed the growing success of Neocine, one of the country's most important exhibitors, with its modern and well-maintained circuit of cinemas," comments Francisco Lafuente, Managing Director of CinemaNext Spain and Portugal. "It is a great honor for us to work with Manuel Berna and his management team in upgrading their current installations to offer Spanish audiences a premium cinema experience, while lowering operating costs." For Alexander van Hemmen, Key Account Manager at CinemaNext Spain, "Neocine is known as an early adopter of new technologies and is a tremendous partner. The benefits of the RGB Laser projector with the new Barco series 4 platform are clearly significant and we are delighted to continue working with them on the implementation of this cutting-edge

technology. The fact that series 1 projectors have been approaching the end of their product life cycle represents a great opportunity for exhibitors to increase image quality with stunning screenings through the replacement of their current systems. Meanwhile, it allows them to run more efficient, profitable and environmental-friendly operations." The installed projector uses three 0.98" DC4K TRP chips, capable of generating 23,500 lm, projecting the DCI P3 colour range and over 98% of REC 2020. The RGB laser light source has up to 40,000 hours of use projecting more than 50% of luminosity. This projector is ready for future innovations such as 4K projection at 120 fps and HDR. In addition, the SP4K-25 stands out for its low energy consumption, obtaining a performance of 9.8 lm/W, while equivalent Xenon or Laser models using DLP chips have a performance of 6 lm/W and 7.4 lm/W, respectively.

Mr Sasaki: Grand Cinema Sunshine at Ikebukuro opened in one of the leading commercial area in Tokyo with a population of about 14 million. Compared to Shinjuku and other terminals, Ikebukuro’s improvement of movie theatres was delayed. We have been operating a movie theatre company for about 70 years in Ikebukuro. We started this project because we believe that our mission is to build a movie theatre that Ikebukuro customers can be proud of compared to movie theatres in other areas. The concept is to open the best movie theatre, that’s it. I visited movie theatres in the US, China and other Asian regions to get a hint of ‘What it is like to be in the best movie theatre’. Talking of growth trajectory, how would you sum up the secret of moviegoing experiences demanded today? We are working on long-terms to reflect as much as possible about contents that we cannot respond immediately, such as systems and operations.

Why GDC products were selected? Mr Sasaki: Sasaki Kogyo is the first company in Japan to install GDC products such as media servers and the immersive audio system. It has been nearly 10 years since the installation of GDC products. The superior technical capabilities and high reliability of GDC products have always streamlined the operation of our movie theatres. Another important reason to use GDC is that we have built a longterm relationship and deep trust with Dr Man-Nang Chong and other employees over the past 10 years. After we learned about the technology at different exhibitions such as CinemaCon, CineAsia and

The automation design of Grand Cinema Sunshine does not only offer cost efficiency but also improves the screening quality.

Any expansion plans for the future? Mr Sasaki: We will open a new 10-screen Cinema Complex in Numazu City, Shizuoka Prefecture shortly. We have installed as many new facilities as possible in Grand Cinema Sunshine to Cinema Sunshine LaLaport Numazu. We will continue to evolve without providing a fixed format so that we can provide our customers with the services that meet the needs of the region and the best equipment that can be installed at that time.

PREVIEW

1-4 October 2019 São Paulo, Brazil

A TONKS accomplishment, EXPOCINE takes place from October 1st to 4th in the city of São Paulo, Brazil, aiming to promote business deals, to present and to discuss film market trends for the segments of film exhibition, distribution and - for the first time - production. Under the theme The Big Screen Hub, the 6th edition of the fair includes 24 lectures, 75 exhibitors, a digital marketing course offered by FAAP (Armando Álvares Penteado Foundation) and an audio-visual project management course taught by FGV (Getulio Vargas Foundation), along with pitches and business roundtables for producers, promoted with the institutional support of BRAVI (Brazil Independent Audio-visual). The Latin American film market is one of the fastest growing in the world. In Brazil alone, the number of movie theatres has increased from 1,500 to over 3,000 in just 10 years, and territories such as Argentina, the Caribbean, Ecuador, Colombia, Mexico, and Peru have also seen growth in ticket sales. According to the Brazilian Film and Audio-visual Observatory, the audience in film theatres in Brazil reached 161 million people, and more than 20 million tickets were sold to Brazilian productions. "EXPOCINE has been following the market shift, growing in quantity

and quality. With each edition we have been able to bring new topics for discussion and new technologies and partnerships that put the main players in the market in a privileged position to close business deals and present their content, technology and services news", comments Marcelo J.L. Lima, CEO of TONKS and creator of the project. In 2018, EXPOCINE welcomed around 2,500 people from 17 countries and brought together the main players in the exhibition and distribution markets, as well as product, service and technology suppliers for the segment. For this year, the expectation is to double this audience, considering the unprecedented presence of the film production segment. This initiative aims to bring the market together and enhance business opportunities and growth. With this edition, TONKS unites the entire audio-visual production chain for the first time in the same event. Promoted with the institutional support of BRAVI (Brazil Independent Audio-visual), the pitches and business roundtable will be held in two modalities: the audio-visual pitch, which can be attended by the event's accredited visitors, presents 12 selected projects to an audience of national and international buyers, with the presence of a moderator. The business round table promotes pre-scheduled and individual meetings between producers and players such as 02 Filmes, Boulevard

Filmes, Downtown Filmes, Elo Company, Galeria Distribuidora, Globo Filmes, Pandora, Paramount Pictures, Sato Co. Ltda., Walt Disney Company Brazil and Warner Bros. Pictures. "The pitch is the fastest and most functional way to sell and promote projects. We understand that it will turn into a powerful tool to encourage this Brazilian production that grows year after year", celebrates Marcelo J. L. Lima. With executive production of Cristiane Guzzi, the 24 EXPOCINE's programmed lectures bring subjects related to public policies, technology, marketing, creative solutions and successful market cases, with the presence of representatives from all segments of the market. "In the case of public policies, this will be a favourable time to collect opinions, experiences and to make public the alternatives that are already working without the support of the federal government. Without a doubt, this is a great time to talk about it. We have the states and municipalities, and of course we need to consider that the film production segment should not fully depend on public resources. All things considered, we will present cases that show that it is possible to produce audio-visual projects with private resources", Marcelo explains.

The Emerging Cinema Markets Conference of Africa, Central Asia, New Europe, the GCC and Turkey are crucial to the development of global box office revenues. "The ECM 2019 will follow on from the successful introductory event hosted in Istanbul in late 2018. ECM 2019 will provide industry stakeholders including trade suppliers, exhibitors and content providers from the region a unique chance to come together at #ecmistanbul to explore, discuss and learn about the key developments, technical challenges and innovations that are central to the cinema industry today and looking ahead to the future. "We promise that it is going to be a very informative and interesting event and one that also offers a unique chance to network with industry experts and professionals. "Rob Arthur, Founder & Director, DCS Events and Partner at The Big Picture. "Moviegoing keeps

growing year after year globally. But this growth is even more so internationally. The Emerging Cinema Markets is a perfect opportunity to focus in places with untapped audiences and great appetite to enjoy the cinema experience, sometimes for the first time." Says Arturo Guillen, VP - EMEA & India, Comscore "With the growing saturation of established cinema markets and the proliferation of alternative technology platforms for viewing films, the need for cinema industry to discover new growth territories is crucially important. But we also know that finding and understanding the specific dynamics of an emerging cinema market is a difficult task, and often an expensive challenge.” "This is where the ECM Conference is super important to the industry, with its specific focus on those markets with new and potentially significant additions to global admissions and box office revenues. It gives a distinct platform for the world to learn directly from experts from emerging cinema markets across the world. I was pleased to have the opportunity at ECM 2018 to showcase to the world some positive data analytics from the Nigeria cinema market that the world did not previously know or understand, as well as the business opportunity that exists untapped within. I look forward to attending the 2019 edition. " says Kene Mkparu, President & CEO, KOMWORLD Limited.
