INOX Brings India's First 270° Panoramic Movie-Viewing The fastest growing multiplex chain of the country, INOX Leisure Ltd (INOX), today launched India's first ScreenX theatre at its multiplex at Inorbit Mall, Mumbai. ScreenX technology offers a panoramic 270-degree movie watching experience to the audience. ScreenX allows the audience to go beyond theme of the traditional movie screen, utilizing a proprietary system to expand select scenes of feature films to the left and right walls on each side. ScreenX is the world's first multi-projection theatre technology designed to enhance the moviegoing experience. The deployment of ScreenX technology would allow the movie scene to spread beyond the cinema screen on to the left and right walls of the cinema hall and offer a spectacular panoramic view. While offering a maximized immersive experience, the 270 degree view would not only amplify the emotional aspect, but also enhance the entertainment value of the content. INOX had signed a deal with CJ 4DPLEX earlier this year to bring the first ScreenX to India. Alok Tandon, Chief Executive Officer INOX Leisure Ltd added "Ensuring a great viewing experience for our patrons has always been our foremost priority, which inspires us to continuously reinvent & innovate and bring the best technology for them. Multiplex Owners Confident to Match Up To Jio's 'First-Day First Show' Plan Multiplex companies recently said their businesses won't be hurt because of Reliance Jio Fiber's plan to offer its premium customers movies the day they released in the market. The country's largest multiplex operator, PVR which runs nearly 800 screens in the country, stated that theatrical and at-home are two completely different experiences and each has their own places. INOX Leisure pointed out that producers, distributors and multiplex owners in India have mutually agreed to an exclusive theatrical window of eight weeks between the theatrical release of a movie and release on any other platform. "This exclusive theatrical window is a model that is followed internationally, in order to ensure the robust financial viability of all the segments of the sector, and has been replicated in India," said INOX Leisure, which operates about 600 screens across India. The producer of the film is the owner of the creative content and is therefore, entitled to choose the platform for distribution and consumption of his content, INOX Leisure added in its regulatory filing.

"However, in view of this mutuallyagreed exclusive theatrical window, he (the producer) would have to choose between theatrical exhibition or release on any other platform, since release on both simultaneously would breach the mutually-agreed exclusive theatrical window," it added. Both these experiences have co-existed and prospered for decades and will continue to so in future, PVR said in a filing to BSE, adding that it is extremely buoyant about cinema exhibition's growth prospects. Given India's low screen density and the growth potential it offers, PVR expects cinema exhibition to continue expanding its footprint in India for the next multiple years, which will continue growing its contribution to the overall revenue of the filmed entertainment. Ambani recently announced the rollout of Jio Fiber from September 5, promising free voice calls for life from landlines, 100 mbps minimum broadband speed at subscription starting from INR 700 a month and free HD TV set on a commitment to an annual plan. As part of Jio Fiber's premium offering - Jio First Day First Show - customers would be able to watch movies in their living rooms on the release day itself.

expansion of their business and somewhere down the line, tend to lose out the core essence of the idea which was the initial spark of their business. But at Jazz cinemas we believe in maintaining our basics right and emphasize on the quality of each and everything we provide. For us more than the number of screens and locations, it is fundamentally important to have a certain thing done in the right and the best way, this is something we want all our customers to take away when they visit Jazz Cinemas, "the best and qualitative cinemas watching experience". We have reached out to the people across by focusing and playing multilingual contents in our cinemas. There have been a huge number of audiences for the international

movies in Chennai and presenting these contents in the regional language was welcomed and received with immense appreciation amongst moviegoers as they could connect with it easier. Similarly, we have a beautiful concept called Play Back which is an indigenous idea that gives the patrons the right to vote for a choice of movie for the month, which could range anywhere fromt he period, genre, based on the cast or director or even an occasion. We also insist on having most of our content, subtitle enabled which actually draws a very substantial crowd which appreciates movies in different languages as well. Does the choice of location impact the Cinema market?

Take us through the inspiration behind the design and architectural feature of the cinemas? LUXE was designed and architected by Giovanni Castor, one of the leading designers from California. Giovanni brought in a style of contemporary classic designs and recreated the aura of a Las Vegas casino with exquisite touches seen in various forms, from the shimmering red sheer curtains, diamond cut glass feature wall to larger than life chandeliers in the main lobby. The most talked about elements in his designs were two things at LUXE. First being the largest LED pillar standing almost 30 feet tall with 72 LED TVs aligned precisely to give a larger than life visual treat. Secondly, the 35 feet long semiprecious stone feature in the auditorium lobby with back light display which enhances the look even further. The flooring is completely clad with Nero Marquina and White Carrara marble. All the 11 screens have been designed differently with each showcasing unique design statements derived from the various geometrical themes. PVR Pictures:

A Quick Glimpse into the Future PVR Pictures is the largest studio for the distribution of Independent Hollywood films in India and also a prolific distributor of Indian films. In line with the brand's vision to introduce diversified content, Kamal Gianchandani, CEO, PVR Pictures Ltd. interacts with TheatreWorld on the brand's content strategy for FY 2019- 2020. Can you tell us about the content outlook maintained and slated for FY 2019-2020? PVR Pictures is the motion picture arm of PVR Cinemas, the largest exhibition company in the country. PVR Pictures has traditionally focused more on Hollywood Films and independent foreign language films, however, this year itis focussing a lot more on Hindi films as well as regional films. This year we will be distributing about 20-25 Hollywood films, 7-10 Hindi films and 15 Non-Hindi Indian films, mostly South Indian Films in five states of South of India. Are there any specific consumer trend / demands in terms of content which PVR Pictures has mapped? The best research that a distributor can do is to look at collections that the cinemas are making for films which are releasing in theatres. The last financial year 2018 -2019 was wonderful for the film business. We went through a real bubble batch, a lot of films worked at the box office, many small films became monster hits and a lot of big films performed well, as expected. This financial year is also doing great with way Q1 has finished on a high note with the success of Kabir Singh and July also started with the success of Spider Man. Clearly the momentum at the box office is extremely strong and we as the distributor of all sorts of films whether it is Hollywood, Hindi, Regional Cinema, we want to be well poised to take full benefit of this positive momentum at the Box Office. Could you share the names of a few movies which you will be distributing this year?

TM-28

September-November 2019

In terms of Hollywood, the biggest film we would have this year, John Wick-3 was recently released which was hugely successful. John Wick 3 has done almost three times the business of John Wick 2 which in itself was a big success. We have got Angel Has Fallen 3 which is a very successful franchise with Gerard Butler, Rambo 5 which is still on in his very successful character of Rambo, this again is a very successful franchise that is coming out later in September. We have got Midway which is directed by Roland Emmerich, the guy who made 2012, the disaster film. He is an acclaimed director of these big disaster films with alot of special effects. His next film, Midway is coming out in November that will be distributed by PVR Pictures. All mentioned are a big part of the slate in the Hollywood film space. In Hindi cinema, we have Super 30 and, Batla House which is released on 15th August with John Abraham and Nikhil Advani has directed it. Further, we have got Commando 3 and Section 375 that came out in July and many more films. We will end up releasing about 15+ regional films in this current financial year. Altogether, we will be releasing about 40 - 45 films in this financial year which is a very solid number. Some of the films are really big in both Hollywood and Hindi space. Tell us about the company's strategy behind choosing the movies for distribution. PVR Pictures has been distributing since 2002 and as a distributor you need to have a very good hold on your territory and know all the cinemas that exist in your territory, the potential of each centre. Also,

you need to be aware of every nook and corner and need to be connected to the exhibitors. PVR Pictures has been doing it for the last 17 years and it is very well in trenched in the cinema ecosystem within the country. PVR Pictures is an integral part of the film industry in India; hence, we understand the territory well and have a great reputation of being a very credible and straight forward distributor. Most importantly, the biggest advantage we have is the insider track because of being an exhibitor. So our understanding of what's happening at the box office, which way is the momentum going, what sorts of films are working, what is the future release slate of all distributors looking like and what are their release dates. Therefore, our ability to plan our release date and release schedule is much better because we are an exhibitor sitting on the wealth of information and data that we constantly mind within PVR Cinemas. Our Insider track and our ability to see the consumer trends, in the sense that not by researching it but by the virtue of data that we get and the numbers we do and the films, their performance at the box office. Hence, by virtue of being very close to what's happening at the cinemas, our ability to sort plan ahead and plan better, do much more efficient jobs is a lot of better than the other distributors. Any plans of taking these movies to wider set of audience? A lot of focus is there on digital marketing because everyone nowadays is on handheld devices, the adoption on digital technology, digital consumption, media consumption, has gone through the

• TECHNICAL • roof in this country. Additionally, we want to make sure that we are relevant for which we market in the most relevant fashion using the most efficient tools and our messaging is as targeted as possible, which is why we use digital platforms a lot to market our films and in my opinion, it's working quite well. Since the inception of PVR Pictures in 2002 as you said up until to now, how has the demand changed from the customer's end? It has changed dramatically from 2002 to till now. The first big change that the market has seen is that now we have multiplexes almost in every major city and every major town in this country; almost the top hundred cities and towns now have multiplexes. This is a big thing because what that does to the social fabric of the society is that Saturday and Sunday people want to come out, it becomes a very viable destination for people to do

something on weekend. People want to have a good time and want to go out. Going to movies is something which we have done for so many years in this country, we love films in so many different languages. Hence, the big change is that the number of multiplexes has gone up and now they are well spread across the country. They are present in the top hundred cities and towns and as a result of that the weekend movie going has become a habit; irrespective of the film, people want to come to a cinema on Saturday and Sunday and watch whichever film is playing at the cinema at that point. Could you name a few international studios that have partnered with PVR Pictures? Also, is there a specific criterion behind you choosing this studio? We tie-up with the studio who has high credibility of churning out high and good quality films. However, it depends on the movie that we are

discussing and our aim is to bring good and diverse content to big screen, hence, we are happy to work with anyone who's got a good film, irrespective of their past background and how much experience they have because a good film can come from anywhere. That said, we work with players like We Are Film Nation, Lion's Gate, Altitude, Endeavour, Bloom. These are all very large enterprises that focus on independent Hollywood cinema space. Any future plans that are ahead for this particular sector? We are focusing a lot on VKAAO. VKAAO is the on-demand platform for launching films and theatre. We launched this platform about a year and a half back. It's been very well received and is doing well. We want to scale it up and our vision really is to turn VKAAO a viable credible distribution platform for small and niche films and I think, we are moving well in that direction.

• BUSINESS TREND • 1. Architecture - The Ultimate Experience Moviegoing no longer remains just for a good movie alone, but for a holistic entertaining experience, more along the lines of multiple facilities and experiences under one roof. In the world today wherein a movie viewer's expectations are constantly changing in terms of visual, auditory & kinesthetic experiences, theatres are gaming up with their latest advancements in technology, design and superior user interface. Cinemas are pushed towards re-inventing themselves to cater to the expectations of the changing audience. It is imperative to begin with the right design, whether it is a new project or a property signed for renovation. The two professionals who play a crucial role are the Architects and Cinema Design Consultants. While the Architect takes care of the overall experience, theme/scheme and regulatory requirements of the entire building, the Cinema Design Consultant focuses on the design of

TM-40

the theatre shell, entry & exit paths, design for acoustic, seating, projection room, lighting and screen, configuration of projection and audio systems, speaker positions, AC integration, electricity requirement for digital cinema, audio equipment and Theatre Management System (TMS). Whether you plan for screens that are Small Gold Class, Mid-size or

Premium Large Format (PLF), to achieve the correct cinema size, the importance must be given to the scientific design requirements. The factors to be taken into consideration are, the screen size/aspect ratio, screen surrounding area, projector placement in reference to the screen, seating design, speaker positioning based on the chosen sound format

• BUSINESS TREND • and the acoustics design. Although, it is important to design cinemas based on local government regulations like the distance between the screen and first row of seats, number of seats per row, width of aisle and gang ways, the exits and

path ways in and out of the cinemas; It is recommended, that the cinema floor is designed first, based on the number and size of the theatre, within the given outline of the building. The rest of the floor space is designed around it. In case it is an

existing building, the screens could be preferably designed based on the existing structure. Also the design should consider service of equipment made easy. A good collaboration of the two experts will provide the best design to execute.

2. Acoustic Treatment - Hear it Right Acoustic Design plays an All-the-more critical role in a theatre, as it is an equally important element of the film viewing experience. Without good acoustic treatment, the audience will not have the desired sound experience, in spite of having a Hi-end audio system. There are two main aspects in acoustics - Sound Isolation Treatment and Room Sound Reflection Treatment. For instance, when you are watching a movie with silence or very low level sound, it will be irritating if you hear sounds from the adjacent screen, or even worse, from both adjacent screens or from the neighbourhood ambience. Sound isolation is difficult to achieve (especially the low frequencies) and it requires meticulous planning and positioning in theatres to avoid leakage between them. If the theatres are next to each other, then you will need to take adequate care in designing the common wall with properly calculated Sound Transition Class (STC) to achieve sound isolation and the targeted Noise Criteria (NC) value, ideally between NC35 and NC40. If the orientation is not planned well, then it becomes an expensive proposition to achieve the STC between the theatres and most cinema promoters fail to address it fully, though it could be worth the investment.

The Acoustic Room Treatment is done on the inner wall of the theatre to eliminate unwanted sound reflections from the walls and ceiling. The acoustic treatment design has evolved from mono sound to immersive sound formats. There are three aspects to it - sound absorption, sound diffusion and sound deflection. All three aspects must be taken into consideration during acoustic design, so that the sound quality, clarity and directionality are not lost. There are two values to be considered while designing - RT60 values based on the room size and speech intelligibility. Adequate care is to be taken to

achieve the prescribed reverb time across the frequency bands for the overall sound quality and for the dialogues to be heard clearly from all screen channels. There are many acoustic materials available in the market. While designing the theatre, more emphasis must be given to acoustics, than the interior aesthetics and ideally there should not be any compromise on acoustics. While doing the acoustic treatment and interior design, one should take care of light reflection from the wall, ceiling and floor. Ideally a room must be designed in such a way, that it is complimenting the visual & sound.

The author K M Suryanarayanan (a) Sury is a passionate designer of sound and audio visual related space. He has been a key part of the above said credentials. Post his graduation from Film Institute of Tamil Nadu in 1989, he started his career in sound recording and engineering and has won a National Award for best sound. Suryheads an experienced design team at QDC that undertakes projects of larger magnitudes. He can be contacted on +91 98400 22880 / sury@qubecinema.com.
