The cinema exhibition industry has witnessed a considerable amount of boom and boost through this post-pandemic period. With irregular and frequent lockdowns becoming a thing of the past, the cinema exhibition seems to now have be granted a considerable amount of space for recovery and innovation. Having two exhaustingly long stagnant years, the industry has stepped up its game with innovative solutions and new opportunities for networking and collaborations. Cinema theatres have been refurbished, renovated and readied for the visiting patrons as the demand for content on OTT platforms are now considered only post theatrical releases. Audiences have begun to prefer and appreciate the wholesome in-cinema movie-watching experience. Movies being directly released on OTT are valued lower than those that have been released theatrically. The mindset of the audience has moved on from small-screened OTT platforms as they have saturated their collection and are beginning to anticipate more films and blockbusters from the cinema industry. A slight matter of concern for the industry worldwide that is currently needed to be addressed is the mere shortage of the availability of silicon chip utilised for the cinema projectors. Going forward, affordability of projectors itself could get sceptical and the struggle could get real! Hence a word of caution to all the industry giants; big or small is to be consistent on maintaining their projectors at least until the paths for supply are clear for us. The paradigm has shifted from multilingual content on OTT platforms, to multilingual content on the big screen. Movies like the Kamal Hassan starrer ‘Vikram’, Yash starrer ‘KGF: Chapter 2’, SS Rajamouli’s ‘RRR’ starring Jr NTR and Ram Charan were well received throughout the nation and on global scales too. The box-office statistics and trends are testimonies to this shift in reception. While southern content occupied the pedestal, the success of the Kartik Aaryan starrer ‘Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2’ was a saving grace for Bollywood. Big Cine Expo (BCE) the world’s second largest international tradeshow and convention is set to roll out its carpet in Chennai for its fifth edition! Harkness Screens Unveils myHarkness Harkness Screens the world’s leading screen technology company and thought-leaders has launched its brand new software platform for screen specification and design, myHarkness. Designed with customer experience in mind, the myHarkness platform provides a cloud-based collaborative

environment enabling users to seamlessly work alone or together as a team using a number of tools to create positive outcomes from cinema screen design and specification. “myHarkness is the result of more than a decade of investment by Harkness into developing leading technology tools to support our global customers in driving better outcomes from their screen technology investments,” explains Mark Ashcroft, CEO, Harkness Screens. “myHarkness builds on those tools creating a cloudbased collaborative platform that will revolutionise the Harkness customer experience bringing them closer to our products and our expertise,” he adds. Available on Windows, Android and iOS, the myHarkness cloud-based platform integrates Harkness’ leading software tools, myHarkness Calculator, Modeller and Planner into a unique workflow in enabling users to manage new build and refurbishment projects where screens are an important consideration.

myHarkness Calculator Quick and easy to use, the myHarkness Calculator calculates the capabilities of equipment choices and provides recommendations on projector, light source and screen choices based upon chosen screen size and maximum brightness levels for 2D and 3D. It also calculates theoretical operating costs and shows how screen choice might reduce these dramatically.

myHarkness Modeller The Modeller allows users to visualise and optimise digital cinema scenarios in a virtual 3D environment reviewing presentation quality from every seat in the auditorium. With in-depth analysis tools, the myHarkness Modeller helps users make more informed decisions about room geometry, seating, screen, projection and 3D technology choices before they’re even installed.

myHarkness Planner The myHarkness Planner helps those specifying screens to reduce risk by carrying out complex calculations ahead of procuring screens. From physical screen curvature and tilt through to specifying the physical sheet size, the myHarkness Planner is an ideal tool for ensuring that these key construction design elements and the actual screen specified are correct prior to the project, helping to prevent potentially costly on-site delays or mistakes from occurring. The three utilities form a seamless workflow and through the myHarkness cloud-based data tools, project data created in one utility can be passed in to the next allowing for data to flow seamlessly through the project. Using leading cloud-based technologies, myHarkness allows for users to collaborate on projects together for the first time with Harkness’ leading tools allowing teams to work closely to define and optimise presentation and screen technology. myHarkness also uses cloud technologies to allow users to access their data seamlessly on any device, anywhere with a uniform experience whether in a web browser or on an iPhone or Tablet. “Over the past ten years, our firstgeneration apps have become the de facto industry tools for screen design and specification. The myHarkness project has allowed us to re-build these tools from the ground up using the latest technologies whilst encompassing all the feedback and ideas from our user community such as localisation, so these truly are the tools that the cinema industry needs and wants. The myHarkness infrastructure provides us with a platform to develop a range of modules focused around education, commercial support and fulfilment that will provide our users and customers with a truly unique experience,” explains Richard Mitchell, VP myHarkness.

Sharp NEC Display Solutions Enhances Digital Cinema Viewing Experiences with New Modular Laser Projectors Sharp NEC Display Solutions launched two new modular laser projectors designed to create an engaging viewing experience for audiences across digital cinema. The new NC2003ML and NC2043ML projectors round out the company's NC2000 Series of modular cinema projection solutions, helping achieve greater operational and organisational efficiencies to deliver the next-level viewing experiences that today's audiences demand. Cinemas took a hard hit during the COVID-19 pandemic. But as vaccinations continue to increase and

the worst effects of the pandemic appear to subside, audiences are eager to get back into the world of entertainment. According to a recent study, 60 percent of U.S. adults reported that, as of March 2022, they feel comfortable going to a movie theatre. This outpaces those who feel comfortable attending a live concert, an amusement park, or a theatre performance. That percentage will likely grow with the summer blockbuster season just around the corner. The NC2003ML and NC2043ML projectors offer cinema operators unparalleled advances in operation, efficiency, and image quality. The models enable theatre operators to lower their operating costs, increase efficiencies, and deliver an exceptional viewing experience to audiences. Key features of the new modular projectors include a Modular Light Source, which allows for adjustments to be made according to different brightness demands. They also feature RB laser technology which is almost speckle-free compared to RGB technology, also providing similar benefits at a lower cost. The projectors are, by design, also environmentally friendly, requiring virtually zero maintenance thanks to an innovative long-lasting laser light engine that eliminates need for lamp or filter replacement costs. This results in a significantly lower total cost of ownership considering their reliability, low maintenance, and low power consumption. As business begins to pick back up, movie theatres across the country that feature the latest modular laser projectors will be ready to welcome audiences back to the big screen with an experience that's even better than before. Beyond cinema, these projectors can be used for projection needs including in museums, art houses and more.

IMAX & Major Cineplex Expand Partnership in Thailand with Three New IMAX with Laser Theatres IMAX Corporation and Major Cineplex today announced plans to expand their partnership with an agreement for three new, state-ofthe-art IMAX with Laser systems in Thailand. The deal marks a significant step forward for IMAX and Major Cineplex - the largest exhibitor in Thailand with a growing regional presence - and will bring IMAX's total presence to seven screens in the fast-growing Thai market. The new agreement provides for IMAX with laser upgrades at two key locations in central Bangkok, including ICON CINECONIC at ICONSIAM, the venue for this year's CineAsia annual conference of Asian exhibitors. The ICON CINECONIC at ICONSIAM upgrade is slated to be installed prior to the conference. ICON CINECONIC at ICONSIAM and the additional location, Paragon Cineplex at Siam Paragon, are two of Thailand's top-performing theatres and are in prime retail and entertainment complexes. The third system will be a brand-new construction located at the Mega Cineplex at Mega Bangna Mall, a massive complex with hundreds of stores, in the Bangkok Metro region. "We are excited to bring these new state-of-the-art systems into Bangkok's most iconic shopping and entertainment complexes as we further expand on our long, successful partnership with IMAX," Major Cineplex CEO Vicha Poolvaraluck said. "I look forward to experiencing the latest blockbuster films in one of the most immersive, high-quality theatre systems around. With the continuous evolution of Thailand's film market, the premium movie experience represented by IMAX has become a driving force to attract audiences back to the box office and support

the industry's post-pandemic recovery." "From our increasing number of screens to growing box office returns, Thailand is an emerging market for IMAX and this agreement marks a big step forward in capturing the opportunity at hand," said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. "We are excited to expand our partnership with Major Cineplex and look forward to further growing the IMAX brand in Thailand and around the globe as a premier destination for entertainment and events." The new and upgraded locations will showcase IMAX with Laser, IMAX's most advanced theatre experience. IMAX with Laser has been developed from the ground-up to be immersive by design and deliver crystal clear, lifelike images and precision audio for a moviegoing experience unlike anything else.

The deal marks a significant step forward for IMAX and AEON at a time when IMAX is driving remarkable growth in the market across its network, box office, and local filmmaking partnerships. IMAX has tripled its network in Japan over the last ten years, from just 13 screens in 2011 to 39 today. With more than $46 million, Japan was IMAX's third highest grossing global market in 2021, with eight of the Company's top 15 highest grossing theatres. Furthermore, Japan is the only IMAX market with more than ten theatres to have an overall per screen average of more than $1 million in 2021. "We are excited that our expanded partnership with IMAX will drive even more value for our theatres," said Yasuhiro Asada, President and Representative Director, AEON ENTERTAINMENT Co. "We will continue to enhance our state-of-theart facilities and services as part of our mission to deliver a variety of exciting experiences to our customers."

IMAX & Aeon to Expand Partnership with Two New State-OfThe-Art IMAX With Laser Locations in Japan

"From its growing global blockbuster portfolio to outsized box office returns, Japan is a thriving market for cinema with some of the most passionate IMAX fans in the world," said Rich Gelfond, CEO of IMAX. "We are excited to expand our partnership with AEON, one of the world's premier exhibitors, and continue to grow IMAX as a premier destination for entertainment and events in Japan and around the globe."

AEON Entertainment and IMAX Corporation announced plans to expand their partnership with an agreement for two new, state-of-theart IMAX with laser systems in Japan. Both new systems will be located at prime retail complexes in thriving suburbs of major Japanese cities, including the AEON Cinema Ichikawa Myoden outside Tokyo and AEON Cinema Shijonawate near Osaka.

IMAX's momentum in Japan has been driven in large part by its local film strategy, with IMAX earning a record $32.6 million in global box office with Japanese language releases in 2021 up from $2.5 million in 2017. Japanese anime has emerged as a particularly strong growth area for IMAX, from the recent "Jujutsu Kaisen 0" to 2020's "Demon Slayer", the highest grossing IMAX film of all time in Japan.

SCL Series Centralized Playback Servers offer each auditorium access to a wide assortment of movies without the need for local storage attached to every media server. SCL Series servers are designed with scalability and reliability in mind. Their storage capacity can be customised based on the number of screens (from four to 30) and the number of movie titles (up to 2,000 movies) to be stored and streamed to any auditorium on-demand. Galalite Screens:

Cumulative Screen Gain Teamed with the right quantitative measures Galalite Screens is providing viewers with a high-quality viewing experience. As a well-experienced brand of premium screens dedicated to state-of-the-art technology, seamless clarity and perfect viewing experience, Galalite Screens will help in understanding screen selection to ensure the best theatre performance. Filmmaking is a labour of love that necessitates the participation and effort of many people. Watching movies becomes even more enjoyable with the best cinema screen for the audience. Consequently, these efforts should be perfectly displayed on the screen. Screen gain is the gain value for a viewer seated perpendicular to the screen's viewing surface. However, there is at least always a difference in gain between the centre and the edges of the screen. As a result of the lack of transparency in screen gain calculation, overall picture quality suffers, and the brightness is inconsistent when comparing the screen centre and edges. The experience of watching movies on a screen becomes dull and grainy. But teaming with the right quantitative measures will give the viewers a high-quality viewing experience.

Cumulative Screen Gain Screen gain is calculated from the point where the screen is brightest,

directly in front of and perpendicular to the screen- the centre. The peak gain at zero to five degrees viewing axis is taken as the standard measurement. When the viewers move

to the side and look at the screen from an angle, the brightness of the projected image begins to fade. Depending on the gain, the reading drops up to 50% of its maximum value at certain viewing angles. As a result, a viewer watching the screen from the corner seats will see an image with less brightness than the viewer seated in the centre. The picture quality and thus the viewing experience of various portions of the image can shift dramatically for viewers sitting far off centre. Given the difference in gain from the centre to the edges of the screen, for example, a projector screen with a gain of 1.4 will project back 140% brighter at the centre but less

TW-30

Jun-Aug 2022

• TECHNOLOGY • brightness at the edges. The screen accomplishes this by focusing light into a narrower reflective angle rather than uniformly reflecting light in all directions. As a result, higher gain screens have a narrower viewing angle. So, a high gain screen may restrict the number of the perfect viewing seats you can have in your theatre.

Hot-spotting Any screen with a gain greater than 1.0 has some level of hot-spotting. When viewed from the centre of the screen, the middle portion of the image will be brighter than the edges. However, this is not noticeable to a great extent on screens with less than 1.4 gain. For over a century, French cinema has occupied an important place in the world's cinema culture, with August and Louis Lumière, who invented motion-picture technology in the late nineteenth century, and Alice GuyBlaché and others being industry pioneers. Conforming to the French measurement standards, the screen gain is measured on the 9 major portions of the screen. This is what Galalite calls the cumulative screen gain. With an aim to improve picture quality and viewing experience, they intend to provide greater transparency of information in the difference in gain from the centre to the edge. This results in cinema owners and stakeholders making an informed decision when it comes to screen selection, resulting in an ideal viewing experience for their patrons. Instead of measuring the screen gain at the centre, the screen gain at 9 different points is measured to find the cumulative screen gain.

It eliminates picture screening distortion as well as any colour and brightness variations. Lensray reduces image noise and improves centre to edge brightness uniformity with a micro-lens arraybased technology. The involvement of the fields released by these distinct micro-lenses are prevented by maintaining the coherence region on the micro-lens array surface lower than the micro-lens footprint. As a result, there is a considerable improvement in perceived brightness. Lensray Technology display is significantly superior to that of any

other screen in the world. To give the audience an ideal viewing experience, any screen or reflecting surface must diffuse light uniformly over the area. Lensray technology has led to the evolution of perfect viewing movie screens. Galalite's screens offer significantly improved and evolved centre-to-edge uniformity, resulting in an ideal viewing experience. This technology has the potential to provide numerous benefits to the film industry. Their primary goal is to increase cinema exhibitors' profitability by ensuring a better and more consistent image presentation.

Consequently, Galalite has developed its own unique Lensray technology that contributes to a life-like cinema viewing experience based on decades of expertise and belief in offering high-quality projection screens. Jun-Aug 2022
