MINDS HARE THEATREWORLD EDITORIAL
Must say the year has had a good start with the CinemaCon and Cine Europe doing the buzz for the industry. LOTS and LOTS of collaborations to creating ‘Life-Like’ experiences even better for its patrons. I had a blast at the CinemaCon this April and should one know the event was a marvel in itself. Starting off with our very own Mr Ajay Bijli, Chairman & Managing Director, PVR INOX opening the International Day at the mega event; only to become the ‘Very First Indian Cinema Exhibition Industry Official’ to be invited to deliver the Keynote Speech in CinemaCon’s 11-year history. Cine Europe has also been quite a fruitful event being Catering-Much to all the exhibitors and integrators around the globe. While our exhibitors in the world at large are still on the wait for new projectors to be presented with a buy, the LED segments seem to have created a boom. Consumers have grown used to high-resolution, high-quality images on their large-format televisions and the immersion of virtual reality, expectations have risen for movie visuals as well. While LED screens require movie theatres to invest in new display installations, they seem to grit away the presence of a projection booth; enabling cinemas to expand seating areas thereby generating more revenue, compensating for the cost of the technology upgrade. LED screens are also more energy efficient to operate than projectors, lowering electricity expenses. With theatres investing hundreds of thousands in the latest LED displays, and customers paying an average of $9-15 per movie ticket in the U.S., ensuring a flawless viewing experience is important. The initial LED screen installations were featured at theatres in Asia (e.g., Korea, China, India) and have since expanded to other locations worldwide, from Australia to Switzerland. Display makers Samsung, LG, Sony, Unilumin, Barco and others are entering the product category. Industry analysts are predicting that one in eight mainstream movie theatre screens globally will be converted to LED digital format by the end of 2023, with North America expected to become the largest market.
So goes for the SOUND! There seems to be a huge market growing in for Open-Source Audio. Many immersive audio systems making noise. Brands like DTS-X, Q- SYS etc. that have already been in the industry books for a pretty good time – and now coming up with something much better!

Golden Village & The Projector Join Hands for New Experiences in Cineleisure
Golden Village and The Projector are coming together to offer a unique experience for Singapore's film buffs. The two leaders of Singapore's movie industry are collaborating on a new entertainment experience that will offer the best of both worlds: blockbusters and mainstream hits that moviegoers have come to expect from Golden Village and the rich selection of international film festivals, live events and alternative films that fans of The Projector have come to love. The new venue will be called Golden Village x The Projector at Cineleisure (GVxTP) and is set to launch in December. It aims to be a new destination for the discovery of film, arts and culture in Singapore. Located in the bustling youth-centric hub of Somerset, GVxTP will honour the heritage of the mall while providing an accessible space for youth, creatives and film buffs. Envisioned as a co-sharing of space by two best-in-class operators of their respective domains, GVxTP will not only be a place to celebrate movies, but also a space for people to be immersed in rich cultural experiences such as live music sessions, art showcases or fun interactive screenings. Apart from these curated events, the space will also be available for private bookings for corporates or individuals looking for an alternative vibe in the heart of Orchard Road. Both Golden Village and The Projector are excited to enhance the experiences of both their audiences. Said Clara Cheo, Chief Executive Officer of Golden Village: "This partnership with The Projector is truly a next step forward for the entertainment scene in Singapore, bringing together two best-in-class
operators of Singapore's movie industry to offer a first-of-its-kind experience. Audiences are looking for holistic activities that are able to elevate their movie-going experience. This collaboration will allow fans of film, art and culture to experience a myriad of activities, be it movies, music, performances or just simply having a drink or meal at our cafe."
"The collaboration epitomises our brand promise of delivering 'More than just a Movie'." Said Karen Tan, co-founder of The Projector: "Over the years, we have redefined what a cinema can offer: an expanded repertoire of film, art, culture and events. It is exciting to come together with Golden Village as it provides an opportunity to offer our experiences to a broader audience. This collaboration that leverages both our strengths will be a win-win for cinema lovers while remaining true to our independent spirit, offering a personalised and authentic experience for our audiences." While this collaboration is not a joint venture, acquisition or merger and the brands remain distinct, GVxTP combines the strengths of both operators: three Golden Village branded halls will screen blockbuster movies that appeal to a broader base, while the other three halls - branded by The
Projector - will offer a diverse range of thought-provoking films that include independent, arthouse, foreign films, cult classics, documentaries that pull in a more niche crowd. Wynk Collaboratives, known for designing the interior architecture for many of Singapore's best-known bars and retail brands, has been appointed to redesign the common spaces to enable the range of programming planned. Golden Village is set to welcome movie buffs with a bumper number of blockbusters. Slated for release are the high-anticipated Wonka, Aquaman and The Lost Kingdom and the untitled Ghostbusters sequel.
With almost a decade of being a cornerstone in Singapore's arts and culture scene, The Projector will also continue to collaborate with independent arts and music collectives and bring to the fore their exciting and growing slate of non-film content, including music, comedy, panels, festivals, art exhibitions and popup markets. The on-ground operations will also be managed by The Projector which includes destination dining and drinks at the cafe and bar.
"We are excited to meet new audiences and grow our community. With this new space, we continue our commitment to provide an alternative and accessible cultural space for healthy dialogue that broadens perspectives, raises social awareness and effects social change through film, art, food, and events," says Tan. In the run up to the official opening at the end of 2023.
Cinionic Drives Cinematic Revolution, Five Years as Leaders in Laser Projection
Cinionic, a Barco company and global leader in laser cinema technology, celebrates its fifth anniversary and milestone in its ongoing mission to advance the theatrical experience worldwide. The footprint for Laser Projection by Cinionic has accelerated in recent years with major theatre circuits including AMC, National Amusements, Cinepolis, Cineplex, Cinemark, and B&B Theatres, among many others, announcing plans for large-scale upgrades to laser. Today, over 35,000 screens across 25 countries and counting are powered by Laser Projection by Cinionic as the demand for the next generation of cinema technology increases around the world. Driving rapid growth for Cinionic is a series of preferred partnerships that includes three of the top four theatre chains in
North America: AMC, Cinemark, and Cineplex. In the past year, Cinionic announced that Japan's TOHO Cinemas, India's PVR INOX Cinemas, CJ4Dplex's SCREENX, Major Cineplex Thailand, and Malco Theatres joined long-time partners such as Cinemark, Kinepolis, and Santikos in making the switch to laser projection.
Cinionic made history as the first to offer an all-laser portfolio, pointing to the technology's increased operational efficiency, better onscreen performance, and reduced environmental impact over its xenon predecessors. Since then, the company has fulfilled its promise of a laser for every screen, introducing new models of both its award-winning Barco Series 4 family of projectors and innovative Laser Light Upgrades.
The breakthrough Laser Light Upgrades solution, which enables cinemas to retrofit legacy Series 2 xenon projectors with laser, has gained traction as a sustainable option for theatres looking to upgrade their cinemas without the cost of a full equipment overhaul. In 2023, Cinionic broke a record with commitments for over 3,000 Laser Light Upgrade solutions from theatres around the world.
The union of sustainability and enhanced experiences is a significant draw for Cinionic's growing list of laser customers. Laser Projection by Cinionic delivers exceptional images onscreen through improved resourceefficiency and minimised carbon footprint, providing cinema experiences that are better for moviegoers, theatre operators, and the environment.

Qube Wire is proud to announce that its partnership with Auwe Digital in Brazil continues to grow. The content delivery network that the two companies are building together has now grown to 100 theatres. "This month we surpassed 100 cinema installs. The change to a device like Qube's Virtual WireTAP which does not require specific hardware, has boosted acceptance. The flexibility and speed of deliveries have encouraged adoption by exhibitors and distributors. This year we plan to expand the network to an additional 100 theatres." says José
Eduardo Ferrão CEO of Auwe Digital. Qube Wire's cloud delivery platform is known around the world for its ease of installation and operation. The platform enables content delivery directly to theatres equipped with one of the WireTAP solutions. Qube Wire also eliminates many of the logistical challenges of delivering hard drives. "For us, Qube Wire is like switching from water to wine," said Milton Durski, CEO of the Cineplus cinema chain. "With Auwe-Qube Wire, I no longer need dedicated staff to manage HD logistics, no more missed sessions with corrupted files and HDD return costs. There is much more flexibility to switch schedules, almost to the day of the movie opening."
Qube Wire is a market-leading electronic content delivery platform that is unsurpassed in its security features. It helps both distributors and theatres streamline their operations. Qube Wire's simple but comprehensive user interface helps distributors manage their digital cinema assets, assign territorial rights for their content, and deliver their Digital Cinema Packages (DCPs) to movie theatres. Additionally, theatres can manage their own digital cinema device details, download KDMs, and access details about all of the movies they are showing via their individualised web portal, all for free. Commenting on the significance of the Brazil rollout Mark Waterston, SVP, Qube Wire, said "We are so happy to see more theatres join the Qube Wire network in Brazil. Distributors across South America are looking for better ways to deliver their movies, and we are happy to be able to provide this solution. We hope to expand across the rest of the continent soon."
Timewaying Breaks Record with Launch of World's Largest LED PLF
Recently in May, Timewaying Technology made history by unveiling the world's largest LED cinema screen at Wushang Dream Plaza in Wuhan, China. It has a dimension of 20-metre width and 10.5-metre height and drew over 300 attendees from the theatre industry to the ceremony. This 4K HeyLED digital cinema screen is DCl-certified and offers a new generation of Premier Large Format (PLF) experience. The high-profile attendees, including the press reporters, theatre owners, integrators, and leading exhibitors such as Wanda, Bona, Omnijoi Media, and Poly Culture, endorsed that the potential of HeyLED's technology will transform the cinema industry.
The product introduction was conducted with PowerPoint presentation at an impressive brightness of 150 nit on the HeyLED screen while the house lights remained on. It highlighted HeyLED's commercial value for multi-scenario applications such as conferences, academic lectures, and live performances with bright, natural atmospheres that enhance the overall visual experience. The event started with a creative and humorous opening film which is a virtual reality stage for product launch, demonstrating the
new application's visual capabilities and symbolising the brand's journey to exploration. Unlike the 10m HeyLED Tech Tour in Los Angeles, the Wuhan event showcased images that appeared within reach due to the extensive size and deep spatial impression of the screen, providing an immersive PLF experience with largerthan-life visuals and pulse-pounding sound.
As the investor of the location, Ruan Yong-Zhao, VP of Hubei Changjiang Film Group praised the new generation of LED technology, stating that the must-see attraction had become the highest box office grossing in Wuhan within a month of opening while underlining the breathtaking clarity and overwhelming sense of awe and wonder. Andrew Chen, CEO of Timewaying, highlighted that HeyLED is solution to the three main pain points currently affecting the cinema industry: limited content diversity, lack of immersion in cinematic experience, and a lack of social connection. Andrew also noted that Al's creative ability and iterative updates in restoration technology, could provide new opportunities for the industry, with Timewaying at the forefront of technological upgrades to provide added-value to cinemas. The
HeyLED next-generation PLF addresses some of the issues with the traditional projection and reflection screening method by delivering high contrast, high brightness, immersive size and high dynamic range (HDR). It also eliminates the need for a projection room, creating new opportunity for building extra VIP private boxes to drive income. To support cinema technology adoption, Timewaying has launched an exclusive HeyLED financing plan for Chinese clients. Afterward, Kenny Chow, Chief Technology Officer of Timewaying, introduced the product's technical features, advantages and application effects compared to ordinary projection with a video demonstration. He highlights the features like impressive dimensions, strong spatial feeling enhanced by 3D imaging, facilitating naked-eye 3D viewing which may increase advertising revenue. Celebrated as a must-have for future cinema transformation, LED hardware provides the foundation for HDR movie formats and will help to develop the entertainment offerings within the cinematic environment. This PLF auditorium is equipped with an EMX immersion WSAI surround audio system. This is specially designed for the HeyLED to deliver a superior sound quality. Xiang Jue, the VP of EMX, stated that the WSAI sound system has made substantial breakthroughs in solving the problem of sound-image perception caused by non-perforated screens. Meanwhile, the 13cm ultra-narrow width of the powerful speaker arrays fit right into the rims of the HeyLED screen to enable wall-to-wall, ceiling-to-ground fitting of the LED screen to the auditorium. With state-of-the-art exhibition technology and a custom financing plan, the next generation HeyLED PLF solution is set to play an essential role in revolutionising the audience experience and developing the global cinema market.

Key Features and Benefits of Cinema Automation CA2.0
CA2.0 incorporates the SCL Centralised Playback Server Series - an integrated centralised storage and playback system designed to streamline content management, and leverages machine intelligence to increase efficiency while dramatically reducing the need for human intervention.
SCL series servers offer each auditorium access to a wide assortment of movies from a centralised server without the need for local storage attached to every media server. SCL series servers are designed with scalability and reliability in mind. Their storage capacity can be customized based on the number of screens (from four to 30) and the number of movie titles (up to thousands of DCPs) to be stored and streamed to all the auditoriums.
With the storage capacity increased by more than 100 times when compared to the traditional local storage of a cinema media server, SCL series servers are designed to meet
exhibitors' demand for an online content solution that enables them to maintain competitiveness in today's market. By integrating SCL series servers with Cinema Automation CA2.0, manual operation and human intervention are significantly reduced. SR-1000 Standalone IMB is the only solution currently available that supports series 1, 2, 3 and 4 DLP Cinema projectors, making it the best possible solution for exhibitors with series 1 projectors that need the server replaced.

Sharp NEC Enhances Digital Cinema Viewing Experiences with New Modular Laser Projectors
Sharp NEC Display Solutions, a global leader in the projector and display market, announced the launch of two new modular laser projectors designed to create an engaging viewing experience for audiences across digital cinema. The new NC2003ML and NC2043ML
projectors round out the company's NC2000 Series of modular cinema projection solutions, helping achieve greater operational and organisational efficiencies to deliver the next-level viewing experiences that today's audiences demand. Cinemas took a hard hit during the COVID-19 pandemic. But as vaccinations continue to increase and the worst effects of the pandemic appear to subside, audiences are eager to get back into the world of entertainment.
According to a recent study, 60 percent of U.S. adults reported that, as of March 2022, they feel comfortable going to a movie theatre. This outpaces those who feel comfortable attending a live concert, an amusement park, or a theatre performance. That percentage will likely grow with the summer blockbuster season just around the corner. The NC2003ML and NC2043ML projectors offer cinema operators unparalleled advances in operation, efficiency, and image quality. Both models enable theatre operators to lower their operating costs, increase efficiencies, and deliver an exceptional viewing experience to audiences.
Key features of the new modular projectors include a Modular Light Source, which allows for adjustments to be made according to different brightness demands. They also feature RB laser technology which is almost speckle-free compared to RGB technology, also providing similar benefits at a lower cost. The projectors are, by design, also
environmentally friendly, requiring virtually zero maintenance thanks to an innovative long-lasting laser light engine that eliminates need for lamp or filter replacement costs. This results in a significantly lower total cost of ownership considering their reliability, low maintenance, and low power consumption. As business begins to pick back up, movie theatres across the country that feature the latest modular laser projectors will be ready to welcome audiences back to the big screen with an experience that's even better than before. Beyond cinema, these projectors can be used for projection needs including in museums, art houses and more.
'The Flash' tops UK-Ireland box office; 'Greatest Days' opens fifth
Warner Bros' The Flash topped the UK-Ireland box office on its opening weekend, with a £3.2m session. Opening in 670 sites, the film took a £4,739 average. Its opening is the 10th-highest of 13 DC Extended Universe films to date, behind previous DC standalone character openings Man Of Steel (£11.2m), Wonder Woman (£6.3m), Aquaman (£5.2m), Shazam! (£4.1m) and Black Adam (£5.6m). Including previews, The Flash is up to almost £4.3m. The film's low UK-Ireland performance mirrored that of its flat USD 55.1m start in North America. Sony's SpiderMan: Across The Spider-Verse added a further £2.5m on its third weekend in cinemas - a 37.8% drop. It is up to £20.2m, approaching double the £10.9m of 2018's first Spider-Verse film. Disney's The Little Mermaid held better than most titles on its fourth weekend in cinemas, dropping 38% with £1.3m. It is just beyond the £22m mark - well down on previous live-action remakes The Lion King
(£76m) and Aladdin (£37.3m), but ahead of post-pandemic Disney title Cruella (£9.5m). On its second weekend in cinemas, Transformers: Rise Of The Beasts dropped 52.8% with £1.2m. It is up to £5m for Paramount; it will aim to overhaul the £9.5m of 2017's The Last Knight, the current lowest-grossing title of the franchise. Elysian Film Distribution's Take That musical Greatest Days opened to £389,235 from the 585 sites to have reported so far, with 18 still to report and a £665 location average. It has £536,955 including previews. Takings for the top five came in at £8.6m. This was down 11.1% on the previous weekenda disappointing result given the presence of two new wide-release films plus strong holdovers at cinemas, although explained partly by the warm weather across much of the country. The next blockbuster with potential to increase takings is Disney's Indiana Jones And The Dial Of Destiny, in cinemas from June 28.

Cinema City Elblag in Zielone Tarasy Shopping Mall in the city of Elblag, Poland is one of the latest launches by the esteemed cinema chain in Europe. While the original cinema property was built in 2004, in the year 2022 it underwent a renovation and was completely refurbished and facelifted for Cinema City patrons.
The cinema facility is equipped with six screens and has a seating capacity of 930 seats. The concession corner
boasts 6 points of sale along with Cinema Café in the lobby. Unlike other cinemas, the lobby here vaunts a huge glass wall that permits the daylight to penetrate inside the space. This unique feature allows those outside to see the spectacular cinema lobby interior from the outside as well. "We have created more than a cinema. It is a perfect premium venue for events, premier screenings and meetings," adds Piotr Gieraltowski, Architect
Engineer and Founder, Extractdesign. It is the first Cinema City in Poland to be designed with rocker chairs in all of the auditoriums.
He continues, "The design we have created had to be in line with Cinema City's design guidelines, but as usual due to the building specifications we have managed to create a slightly different atmosphere in this project." The design team has achieved a monumental lobby that also has a very
cosy atmosphere in the concourse. Since the cinema was previously operated by a different exhibitor, the plans and interiors had to be changed entirely and updated alongside current trends and the standards set by Cinema City.
As Gieraltowski states, the cinema has been divided in to two separate zones that flaunt distinctive atmospheres. The lobby is featured with high ceilings, black deep glossy floor tiles and impressive columns which have been extensively exposed by wrapping them in LED light lines. They beautifully reflect in the black glossy floor and windows making patrons feel like they are in the middle of a futuristic forest.
Once moviegoers have crossed the stairs and entered the concourse leading to the theatres, the ceiling drops much lower and the floor changes to a comfortable carpet.
The carpet brags a new design that has been used for the first time in this cinema. The lighting switches from darker to cosier. It leads people into a calmer, more private and personal atmosphere before the screening. As an optical trick, the team has set walls off the concourse in order to narrow it down in length, which are connected with LED light lines on the ceilings to create a dynamic perspective. It makes the corridor appear longer and illusive.
"It has been a great challenge for us to create a completely new cinema in a former one, something that would not bring memories of its predecessor. We avoided structural changes and have managed to design something that is new, different and reflecting Cinema City’s image and philosophy of 'The best place to watch a movie.' We have worked mostly with lighting and materials to
impress people and give them a venue escape from the real life into a magical world of movies from the moment they cross the cinema doors," added Gieraltowski.
When it comes to the equipment at Cinema City Elblag, the auditoriums are equipped with Christie projectors with integrated Doremi/Dolby cinema servers and 3D systems from HCBL. The auditoriums have been readied to display HFR content on MDI Strong's screens. When it comes to audio, the auditoriums boast proven equipment in the form of Dolby CP950 processors, QSC amplifiers and speakers from JBL and MAG Cinema. The installation and configuration of the equipment was carried out by Cinema City engineers.
The cinema refurbishment was budgeted in 2021 when the world and cinemas worldwide were still sinking due to the pandemic. With recovery period underway, the prices were inflated and the availability of many materials were scarce. Despite this, the team at Cinema City Elblag along with the capable team of Extractdesign, have managed to complete the refurbishment process in 4 months.
"It has been a great challenge for us to create a completely new cinema in a former one, something that would not bring memories of its predecessor. We avoided structural changes and have managed to design something that is new, different and reflects Cinema City' image and philosophy of 'The best place to watch a movie.' We have worked mostly with lighting and materials to impress people and give them a venue escape from the real life into a magical world of movies from the moment they cross the cinema doors."

Trondheim Kino:
First Boutique Cinema in Norway
The veteran cinema brand introduces the country's first boutique cinema in Trondheim, Norway. Two of the screens from the eleven-screen cinema facility have been fitted out and transformed into screens that simply ooze luxury, comfort and cosiness. Despite its boutique nature, the cinema screens are up-to-date with their sound and projection technology.
Established in the year 1918 as a result of the Norwegian parliament giving the municipal councils the right to grant licenses for cinema operation, Trondheim Kino is the only cinema operator in Norway's third largest city that has a relatively large student population. Trondheim Kino has two venues in the city centre, Prinsen Kino, the eight-screen multiplex and Nova Kino with eleven screens.
Trondheim municipality took over the then privately owned World Theatre on the Circus plot in Prinsens street, which had previously been the largest cinema in the Nordics with 1,150 seats. The cinema centra has been remodelled at several stages and Prinsen Kino appears today as a modern cinema centre with eight screens. In 1938, Trondheim Kino entered into an agreement with the labour union about cinema operation, and six years later the cinema was opened under the name Sentrum Kino. It was in operation until 1993, until the large screen was rebuilt into five screens and renamed Nova Kinosenter. The cinema centre was further remodelled and received an
addition of six screens. Nova's main screen, the Liv Ullmann screen, has been modernised several times, most recently with a new screen and Dolby Atmos sound system.
Continuing its remodelling and refurbishing tradition, Nova Kino has been refurbished once again with two new boutique screens. The layout of the two new boutique screens were designed by the famous cinema consultant Rolv Gjestland who has been responsible for hundred of new builds and renovations in Norway in
the past four decades. The contracting and project management was done by Skeie Seating, the leading fixed seating supplies in Scandinavia for 75 years and the chairs were produced by Infinity Seating. For generations, Skeie Seating AS has delivered chairs to plenary halls all over the world.
"The geometry of the screens was quite challenging with its low ceiling, shape and concrete walls. The capacity of the screens were reduced from 115 seats and 7 row screens,
to 64 seats and 5 rows in each of the screens, increasing the row depth from 1.100mm to 1.850mm," added Runar Lien, Senior Advisor Cinema & Culture, Skeie Seating AS. The two cinema centres are both located in old existing buildings used for other purposes and have been remodelled several times over the years.
cushions and table lamps. The cinema facility hosted the annual Norwegian Cinema Conference known for its large number of guests and speakers from all over the world. The boutique cinema screens have soon become a buzz with the gaining popularity.
Trondheim Kino has re-branded their entire cinema concept for the screens with the names EPIQ, MAGIQ and BOUTIQ with the first concept being high-end comfortable cinema seats, MAGIQ with electrical recliners and the latter a genuine boutique cinema concept with all its features. It is important to emphasise that boutique screens are not only the design of the seats but an entire concept inclusive of programming, design, fabric and colours of the sofas and chairs, addons like tables, lamps and decorative cushions, a cinema bar and the design and decoration of the walls.
"The geometry of the screens was quite challenging with its low ceiling, shape and concrete walls. The capacity of the screens was reduced from 115 seats and 7 row screens, to 64 seats and 5 rows in each of the screens, increasing the row depth from 1.100mm to 1.850mm."

Runar Lien, continues, "Our customers make a living by selling experiences and disseminating information to their customers. The surroundings are crucial to the customer experience, and our products are very important for the impression of a plenary hall. With superior products and professionally based advising, we will help our customers to give their customers the best possible experience. Our mission is therefore: We make our customers more attractive to their customers!"

Trondheim Kino has gone all the way in terms of its concept and has taken a serious note on setting the standard, not only in Norway but also for the rest of Scandinavia when it comes to conceptual thinking.
Prytania Theatre: The Aural Experience at One-of-aKind New Orleans Theatre
Bought in 1995 by Rene Brunet and currently owned by his son, Robert Brunet, the Brunet family has operated theatres in the New Orleans area for more than 115 years, a tradition that now spans four generations. The family's deep roots in vintage cinema still reflect in the interior décor and twice-weekly showings of classic films, have prompted the Brunet family for an elated update to offer patrons the very best cinema experience…
In some ways, the Prytania Theatre in New Orleans harkens back to a bygone era. It has been in continuous operation as a neighbourhood movie house since 1914, and it is the last remaining single-screen commercial theatre in the South. But while the interior décor evokes the mid-20th century heyday of Hollywood, a recent technology upgrade has launched the Prytania Theatre into the future with 4K laser digital projection and Dolby Atmos immersive audio powered by Meyer Sound cinema series loudspeakers.
The Prytania Theatre was purchased in 1995 by Rene Brunet and is currently owned by his son,
Robert Brunet. The Brunet family has operated theatres in the New Orleans area for more than 115 years, a tradition that now spans four generations.
Although the family's deep roots in vintage cinema are reflected in the interior décor and twice-weekly showings of classic films, dedication
to offering patrons the very best cinema experience prompted the upgrade to a Barco SP4K 15C 4K laser projector and the Dolby CP950A Dolby Atmos audio system comprising 51 Meyer Sound selfpowered loudspeakers. The entire technology renovation was entrusted to Omaha-based Strong Technical Services.
"We had put in a new Dolby CP650 7.1 system after hurricane Katrina in 2007 and it worked fine," reflects Robert Brunet, "but after the pandemic faded, we really wanted to offer our patrons something specialthe best of the best. We knew Dolby Atmos was the way to go, and we
"A lot of times a powerful system can be too bright in scenarios with mainly dialogue. But the Meyer Sound system was clear and natural, never fatiguing. When you need it to bang it will do it, but with dialogue, the accuracy and fidelity shine through."
– Robert Brunet, Owner, Prytania Theatre
also wanted a speaker system with the power and punch to take full advantage of the format. I was familiar with Meyer Sound equipment for live performances, and when I found out they had cinema systems I knew that would be the winning combination. It certainly did not disappoint."
The first showing with the new system was Top Gun: Maverick. The sonic improvement was startling, according to Brunet.
"Our post-Katrina system was quite good but the new Meyer Sound system just blew it away," he recalls. "What I heard with that movie pushed every button. When the jets flew by, the building literally shook, yet you also heard every detail with clarity and pinpoint positioning. It was very impressive."
The clarity and dynamic range also enhanced quieter scenes, says Brunet. "A lot of times a powerful system can be too bright in scenarios with mainly dialogue. But the Meyer Sound system was clear and natural, never fatiguing. When you need it to bang it will do it, but with dialogue, the accuracy and fidelity shine through."
While Top Gun: Maverick showcased special effects, two later showingsElvis and Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody - shifted the emphasis to musicality. "These days, when we play a movie like Top Gun or Elvis we get a lot more positive comments," says Brunet. "'The sound is really great,' they'll say. 'What did you do in here?'"
The screen channels for the system employ three Acheron Studio cinema loudspeakers, with four X 800C cinema subwoofers driving the lowfrequency effects (LFE) channel. The Atmos surround channels are carried by 32 HMS 10 and two HMS 12 surround loudspeakers, bolstered by two USW 210P subwoofers for bass management. Fill speakers for the balcony, configured in two zones, are
eight MM 4XP miniature self-powered loudspeakers.
Spearheading the project on behalf of Strong Technical Services was Director of Sales Travis Henning, who coordinated design and commissioning efforts in consultation with Meyer Sound Program Manager for Cinema and Residential Jay Wyatt. Before taking over the reins of the family cinemas from his father, Robert Brunet was involved extensively in the promotion of live concerts and electronic dance music (EDM) events, and today he continues as a principal partner in the promotion company, Amps Events.
"I've been a big fan of Meyer Sound concert systems for decades," he says. "I was always impressed with the power and fidelity of the sound at venues with Meyer loudspeakers, but I was not familiar with the company's cinema systems. When I heard about the cinema line, it was an easy decision to go down that road."
Brunet is confident that the new Meyer Sound system will not only showcase the sounds of today's cinema but also add new life to past classics. The Prytania Theatre is in the process of restoring 35mm and 70mm film projectors to offer screenings of vintage film masterpieces in their original format. In addition to first-run and classic films, the Prytania Theatre also hosts
special events, including regular presentations of the cult phenomenon, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. The Classic Movie series, with daytime screenings every Sunday and Wednesday, hosts feature such as Singing in the Rain, Sunset Boulevard, Citizen Kane, and The Searchers
Strong Technical Services (STS) has deep roots in cinema technology, extending back to the 1930s when it was created as a service provider of sound reproducers for film projectors. Now a wholly owned subsidiary of Fundamental Global Holdings (FGH), STS employs a staff of more than 85 with business across three operating segments: Equipment Sales, Managed Services, and Field Services.

But thanks to the movie-going culture and love for films among audiences, we have started witnessing a 'V' shape recovery in the Theatrical and Film business. This year, PVR is celebrating an important milestone in its 25th year of operations and we wish the organisers and TheatreWorld all success for the expo in this landmark year"

I am really excited to be a part of this event. I want to thank everyone for honouring me but more than that I want to be present with the experts and learn how we can collaborate and innovate to take our film industry forward and ensure that we have good cinema exhibition in every single part of India"
– Vivek Ranjan Agnihotri, FilmmakerWHY INDIA?
Asian countries are surging ahead. India is one of the world's emerging economies with the entertainment sector occupying a dominant position. In fact, Indian cinema industry is second on to Hollywood in size. The highest number of cinema screens and highest number of movie releases belong to South India and is considered the top market for cinema exhibition in India. The 21st century belongs to Asia, more specifically to China and India, the two fastest growing economies of the world. By 2025, China and India are expected to be the second and third largest economies respectively. The field for technical expertise and equipment is rising in potential in the cinema theatre market in India and other Asian countries, but there is still a gap that needs to be filled in and here lies an opportunity for a viable platform in India to Showcase competencies, safeguard interests and share expertise with Asia and the rest of the world.
