See Surge in F&B Sales; Moviegoers- A Hungry Bunch
The recent Hollywood releases have significantly increased footfall at Indian cinemas, resulting in a rise in food and beverage (F&B) sales. Popcorn, Soft Drinks, Nachos, and Samosas are the most popular F&B items. F&B outlets have seen a 10-15% rise in sales, and some single-screen theatres have reported a 40% increase. The end-ofseason sales at retail stores have also contributed to the surge in cinema attendance. Theatre owners hope the trend continues with upcoming bigticket Indian movie releases.
If the chatter around the recent Hollywood releases is anything to go by, it should come as no surprise that footfall at single-screens and multiplexes has shot up over the past few days. Happy moviegoers are usually a hungry lot, especially if it means back-to- back screenings and a long run time. Coupled with EOSS rush at retail stops, F&B outlets have been doing excellent business, despite the monsoon gloom.
"People of all ages are coming to watch films & theatre food is a large part of that experience. Along with popcorn and soft drinks, nachos and samosas are hot sellers. F&B has brought in additional revenue along with good ticket sales" - Amitava Guha Thakurta, Regional
Director,PVR INOX to Invest INR 450 cr in FY24, Adding 150 Screens With Focus on South India
"Some of the films are doing excellent at the box office. We exhibitors are overwhelmed. F&B sales are up by 40 per cent. The food vendors outside the theatre are doing good business too. Almost all shows are running houseful" - Navin Choukhani, Owner, Navina Cinema.
The multiplex chain will also continue promotional offers on food and beverages and on movie tickets to bring more people to cinemas. Multiplex chain PVR INOX has plans to open 150 screens with an investment of INR of 400-450 crore in FY24.

"Global release of both the films have attributed to a significant jump in footfall and significant rise in sales. Almost all brands are having huge end-of-season discount offers as well. We hope this craze will continue with subsequent big budget Indian flick releases this week and in August"K. Vijayan, General Manager, Acropolis Mall.
The company that opened a 12-screen Superplex in Bengaluru in July, going forward will be focusing more on South India due to high consumption in the market. A Superplex is a property with 10 or more screens offering a range of formats and experiences under one roof. The new property in Bengaluru has multiple cinema formats including LUXE, 4DX, P[XL] and ICE.
"Company has invested INR 72 crore for the new theatre in Bengaluru which has been launched in partnership with Prestige Group," Sanjeev Bijli, Executive Director, PVR INOX, told sources.
He said that PVR has about four to five Superplexes and INOX has around three to four. "Making Superplexes depends on the mall size, location. The new cinema in Bengaluru has high consumption of movies of all languages. We are opening another 15 screens in Bengaluru and another
14 screens in Pune. So, two more Superplexes are coming up this year. These kind of megaplexes can be built in metros where movie consumption is high and multiple languages movies are consumed."
He said that South India has the highest share at 32 percent in terms of screen count. The theatre chain currently has 158 screens in 25 cinemas in Bengaluru and 201 screens in 35 cinemas in Karnataka. The company in South India has a total of 542 screens in 96 properties. In total, the multiplex chain has 1,702 screens.
"Going forward we would like to concentrate more on South India as consumption is higher as opposed to rest of the country. But this year our rollout of 150 screens is mixed," said Bijli. He added that they are seeing stabilisation in box office. PVR INOX had earlier this year said that it will wait for the box office to stabilise before taking over the next set of screens for fit-out. Fit-out means taking the handover from a developer and starting the interior work.
"We have seen good May, June and July. People are coming back to cinemas. The line-up looks strong. We are looking at business stabilising in this and next quarter. Hence, we are rolling out screens in catchments with high propensity to watch films," the Executive Director said.

The company had also recently offered sharp discount on food and beverages and Bijli said that they will keep coming with promotions.
weekends), we will keep coming up with promotions to let more customers come to theatres. We are looking at various promotion for tickets and F&B. The share of F&B is 25 percent to overall revenues and the idea is to increase strike rate. The idea is that at lower price it will increase consumption. If people buy more it will have a positive impact on revenues," Bijli said.
After 33 Years, Cinema Halls Back in North Kashmir
After 33 years, cinema is back in north Kashmir as Jammu and Kashmir's lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated multipurpose cinema halls in Baramulla and Handwara. In Baramulla the 100-seat hall was established in erstwhile Sherwani Memorial Hall on the national highway in the heart of the town.
the old cinema has been replaced by a five-storey shopping complex.
Manoj Sinha, who was accompanied by District Development Council chairperson Safina Baig, termed it a momentous day for Baramulla and Handwara towns. "The movie theatres are reflection of growing aspiration of J&K. The facilities at both the locations will also house a cafe, VR, conference and seminar facilities for youth," said Sinha in a tweet.
The president of the Municipal Council, Baramulla, Umar Kakroo said the opening of cinema in the town is an indication that normalcy has returned to this place. "Film lovers can now come here and enjoy movies," he added. Even movie buffs are happy over the opening of cinema but want a full-fledged multiplex. "Here an old hall has been turned into a cinema. In modern times, when people watch films at multiplexes, this cinema won't attract big crowds," said Mohammad Aslam, an old movie buff.
The cinema in Baramulla will be run by Jadooz Cinema and VR which is running a chain of cinemas across the country. Every day there will be three shows at the cinema hall. Officials said that the film, 'Pathaan', will be shown to the audience on the first day.
"While I am not sure if we can do any such discount in the future because this itself is a great offer (In July, PVRINOX announced a slash in prices of snacks with combos for INR 99 on weekdays from 9 am to 6 pm and unlimited popcorn and Pepsi refills on
In Baramulla the 100-seat hall was established in erstwhile Sherwani Memorial Hall on the national highway in the heart of the town. The hall is named after Maqbool Sherwani, who was a Kashmiri nationalist leader and close associate of National Conference founder Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah and was killed by Pakistani raiders in 1947. The new cinema hall is just a few metres away from the location of an old cinema, Regina that was run by a prominent businessman of the town for decades. However, after the emergence of militancy in the early 90s, the cinema closed down. The owners in the late 90s sold the cinema building and now
Rahul Nehra, founder and managing director of Jadooz, said currently they are running four cinema halls in J&K. "We are planning to increase our screens to 10 by the end of 2023 in Kashmir. Today e-inauguration of Handwara was also done but it will be made commercially open within 10 to 15 days." Before the emergence of militancy North Kashmir had seven big cinemas, Regina, (Baramulla) Samad Talkies and Shahkar (Sopore), Hemal (Handwara), which were run by locals while three cinemas were run by Army in Baramulla, Pattan and Uri towns and named after famous generals.
All these cinemas were closed in the early 90s after militants gave threats to
owners and people stopped visiting cinema halls, while the old cinemas in North Kashmir have been either converted into shopping complexes or under the occupation of forces. The army has turned its cinema halls into conference halls, while the building of the Uri Army got damaged in the 2005 earthquake. Last year, a multiplex, INOX, was opened in Srinagar which is owned by a Kashmiri Pandit business family from Srinagar.
Oppenheimer Brings Cinema Back To Life In Kashmir, House Full On Day 1!
Srinagar's only multiplex is sold out for the next three days, making ‘Oppenheimer’ the biggest release in Kashmir after Shah Rukh Khan's ‘Pathaan’.
Srinagar: Srinagar: Srinagar: Srinagar: Hollywood blockbuster ‘Oppenheimer’ is witnessing a phenomenal response in Kashmir, with capital Srinagar's lone multiplex reporting record sales on Friday, the day the Christopher Nolan biopic was released. Srinagar's only multiplex is sold out for the next three days, making ‘Oppenheimer’ the biggest release in Kashmir after Shah Rukh Khan's ‘Pathaan’.
"This is the first time a Hollywood epic thriller has achieved full house in Kashmir's only multiplex where Cinemas remained shut for 33 years. Even before the film was released tickets at Srinagar's INOX - the only multiplex in Kashmir- its tickets got sold out." Vikas Dhar, the owner of
this INOX property, said that the overwhelming response of people has surprised him. "Tickers are sold out for another few days. It has surpassed our expectations. We had never thought that a Hollywood film will get such a response," said Dhar.
INOX in Srinagar was opened in September 2022 ending an entertainment draught in the Valley that was enforced following rise in terrorism in 1989. Dhar says that the release of ShahRukh Khan's 'Pathaan' was the turning point that attracted people to cinema in Kashmir and now its ‘Oppenheimer’ which has achieved house full.
Kashmir's cinema legacy is as old as Bollywood in India. The first cinema ‘Kashmir Talkie’ opened in Srinagar in 1932, two year before Bombay Talkies movie studio was founded in Mumbai. It was later named as ‘Pladium Cinema’. Eventuality, Regal cinema and several other movie theatres came up in Kashmir. Many of them were showing Hollywood films as well. But with the rise of terrorism backed by religious extremism, all cinemas were shut in 1989. Several attempts to reopen Cinema failed due to fear and lack of moviegoers in the Valley.
‘Oppenheimer’ is a film on the life of American physicist Robert ‘Oppenheimer’ (called the ‘father of atomic bomb’) who developed the first atomic bombs that were later dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, during the Second World War. The lead role in the R-rated film is played by Cillian Murphy, the star of 'PeakyBlinders'.

screened in these auditoriums include 'Salaar', 'Tiger3' and 'Dunki'
