End of an era for old Mangere Bridge It might be a great place to stroll, cycle or fish, but the almost 100 year old Mangere Bridge used by pedestrians and cyclists has only 5 years of life left, says Senior Transport Planner Sarah Cronwright of the New Zealand Transport Agency. NZTA currently spends about $300,000 per year in strengthening upgrades and maintenance. So rather than throw good money after bad they have set about planning a brand new bridge by early 2015 – the current structure’s centennial year.

Not surprisingly there are many considerations: it’s a popular recreational environment for all ages; it’s a port-side buffer for 6000 tonne ships known to sweep into its side on the Manukau Harbour’s treacherously strong tide; it’s a convenient thoroughfare for Mangere Bridge and Onehunga residents, therefore NZTA is starting the public consultation process early. “We want to know what kinds of things users of the bridge would like right from the start” said Ms Cronwright at the presentation,

held at The Landing’s function rooms in mid July. “We will be sending letters out to the local community at the end July and have open days on 11th & 12th of August. After public continued on page 2

& stakeholder consultation periods we can establish cost, and we would hope to finalise a design and start construction early 2014.” People can submit ideas on anything from bridge height and width to the type of railings used. Right now it sits about 1.5m above the waterline at hi-tide and is 13m wide. “At the moment we are proposing a 6m width. The wider the community wants it the higher the cost will be" says Sarah. They estimate that to strengthen the bridge against errant vessels could cost up to $6million, and several stakeholders suggested Ports of Auckland Ltd should be footing some of the bill. One fisherman enjoying a quiet July morning at hi-tide, recalled one of the occasions a boat had rammed into the bridge, pointing to where he was standing. “It came in about here, trying to go out on an incoming tide you see. It’s a very strong current.” He said he liked the height of the bridge for fishing but thought something needed to be done about the railings. Another man agreed. “I’d love to bring my son down here more but he’s a toddler and the gaps between these railings are huge – he’d fall straight in, and the current is so dangerous down there.” It’s partly because of these notorious waters that Chair of MHRS, Jim Jackson, wants a superior boat ramp installed in unison with

bridge construction. It’s not a new subject; Manukau City Council earmarked $1m for the project over 2 years ago, then Auckland City agreed to match it, but because of the design-prohibitive Coastal Protection Area Zone 1, another $0.6m was added on, says Jim. At the meeting he presented a potential design, alongside that of Auckland Council’s. He felt if the zoning could be changed, the AC $2.6 design costing could be dramatically reduced and put to far better use with a more cohesive and ambitious ramp design. He showed that it could incorporate a large turning circle for cars and trailers plus service waka, motorboats and dinghies at the same time. A breakwater would frame the ramp to allow boaties to embark and disembark before vessels are pulled into the tidal flow. For more information on NZTA open days see their advertisement page 14.

Scammers claim to be “official” Onehunga Guide The Onehunga Business Association and The Auckland Newsletter Company have begun compiling the 2013 Onehunga Guide, and, as is often the case at this time, a scam has appeared hoping to lure businesses to spend $490 on unsolicited advertising with them instead. Sam's month in review This past month, I have met many of you around the electorate and it has been good to receive your valuable feedback to my survey which was sent out to all constituents. I do want to hear your views and opinions on the issues that matter to you. I would also like to know how my team and I can better serve your needs.

In Maungakiekie, I visited rest homes including Selwyn Lodge and Elizabeth Retirement Home. The elderly play a big part in our community and I enjoy visiting these residences to hear their views as well as enjoy their fellowship; and it is important to know that they are being looked after. It was a pleasure to help a locally based service organisation when I assisted with Alzheimers NZ for Dementia Annual Appeal in Onehunga. I hosted the Prime Minister, John Key, in the electorate at Compac Sorting Equipment. This local business is a world leading company in the development of fruit and vegetable sorting technology. It recently won the 2012 New Zealand Hi-Tec awards for its innovation and was the appropriate place to announce the Advanced Technology Institute. The purpose of the Institute is to help get our best, most innovative ideas out of the lab and into the marketplace more quickly. This will assist to create jobs and opportunities for the many high value-added manufacturers like Compac who are located in Maungakiekie. Locally, I also enjoyed the Matariki celebrations by visiting the “Through our Eyes” Matariki art exhibition at the community centre. I then joined the campaign of the local women’s refuge to raise awareness for the crisis line appeal week. Finally, I enjoyed the powhiri at Royal Oak Intermediate School to welcome Derek Linington who has been appointed the school’s new principal. I'm

sure the community join me in wishing him well in this important local role. Nationally, I was honoured to present awards at the ASB 2012 Stage Challenge. It is amazing to see our talented youth produce items full of colour and choreography with high technical skill. I also gave the opening address at the United Nations Youth NZ Model. There were over 250 delegates from around New Zealand debating international issues with the theme being 'equality'. I joined a panel at Internet New Zealand’s Nethui where the issues were around how to get our communities better connected to the internet. I know it is an issue that is important in our schools, hospitals and workplaces, but it is also something which needs to be looked at in terms of access in our homes. The Government’s ultrafast broadband and rural rollout is helping to address some of these issues by ensuring over 97% of schools and 99.9% of students will have access to fibre. In parliament, I am pleased that we have finally passed the Government’s 1st Welfare Reform Bill. I chaired the select committee which scrutinised this legislation and am happy to report it will be implemented quickly. The welfare system is changing from a passive approach fostering benefit dependency to an active, work-focused system. Young people in particular will have much greater obligations, but also greater support to help them get the education needed to be independent of welfare. We are providing $80 million in childcare so teen parents can continue with their education and training. Crucially, teen parents and young people on benefits can now earn incentive payments by remaining in education and completing budgeting and parenting courses. Dedicated youth service providers will help young people pay their bills directly, manage their money and meet obligations like completing education. They are reforms which will help many in our community and I am proud to have helped implement them. Peseta Sam Lotu-liga, MP for Maungakiekie

Rail revamp begins A regional programme of improvements to public transport facilities by Auckland Transport will see improvements to five railway stations by the end of this year. $3.5m will be spent on Onehunga, Remuera, Penrose, Otahuhu and Greenlane stations to affect a variety of works.

The aim is to achieve a high level of quality and consistency for rail users – allowing passengers the comfort of reasonable certainty whether they are accessing the station, requiring guidance and information or predicting platform layouts. Work is due to begin this month on the Onehunga rail station and will include improvements to lighting, the extension of the platform and the provision of a toilet block. It is expected that there will be no interruption to normal rail services while the work is carried out, but passengers would be well advised to keep an eye out for updates during this time. Work on all the stations will be completed by the end of 2012. The platform extension will be 20m in total, although both ends of the current platform will be lengthened. This will allow for the 3 car electric units that will serve the Onehunga line in the near future. Once these improvements have been carried out the line will be ready for electrification, so we can start looking forward to quiet, smooth rail travel. Another amenity which will be welcomed is the addition of a toilet block, with two cubicles. While this facility is primarily for the convenience of the drivers – for whom this is a terminus – it will be open during the day for passengers to use.

Fire fighters commended 13 months after the a dreadful incident which saw fire fighters put all their skills and experience to the test, the crews who responded to a report of an explosion in Onehunga were officially commended for their work. Emergency services had to deal with the combined threats of an unknown gas in a confined space while assessing the injured and the ongoing risks, and dealing with the tragic death of Watercare employee Philomen Gulland. The ceremony, which was instigated by Watercare CEO Mark Ford, acknowledged the efforts of the crews called in from Onehunga, Ellerslie and Mt Roskill. Paul Baxter, National Commander of the NZ Fire Service, presented Certificates of Commendation to twelve Officers and Crew. Looking on were Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, Leila Boyle, Chair of Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board, and Mr Ford. The ceremony also offered fire fighters the opportunity to speak with those affected by the incident – a situation which is apparently quite unusual. One crew member commented that this was only the second time he had spoken after an incident to the victims or their families, despite often wondering about the outcome.

Local jobs come and go

Libraries light a fuse

At a time when Bill English says the global financial crisis and its requisite financial ills might take a whole generation to mend, it is somewhat heartening to hear that Onehunga will see 200 new workers making use of the local shops and amenities.

The strong youth focus in Auckland’s Unitary plan marks a change in approach to both the needs and contributions of young people, say Onehunga library staff.

In July the Onehunga Business Association reported they had been putting together a welcome pack for the Sitel New Zealand call centre workers based at the corner of Gloucester Park Road and Neilson Street. The site is well equipped for employees as it previously housed Westpac’s call centre operations. Town Manager, Amanda Kinzett, says Sitel is managing calls for Virgin airlines and that “industry sources have suggested that call centre staff numbers at the new facility could grow to as many as 500, which would be fantastic for Onehunga.” She reminds local businesses that these staff will be making use of town centre during shifts that run from 7am to 12 midnight. While the addition of consumers in the community is to be celebrated, commiserations must go to the 85 staff whose redundancies were announced in late June by employer Norman Ellison Carpets Ltd, when the Cavalier owned business decided to close its Onehunga spinning plant. The move followed the earlier loss of 18 jobs from the plant in October 2011, and 26 redundancies in April this year. It seems the losses are a symptom of problems in the textile industry as a whole, explained Robert Reid, FIRST Union General Secretary. The 373 Neilson Street site is one known to many locals; it housed the Onehunga Woollen Mills in the late 1800s, producer of iconic woollen blankets still in demand today, and a much documented subject the history of Onehunga.

Their Fuse teen reading programme that kicked off in 54 regional libraries in July is just the first of many projects that cater to young people, including using the social media they relate to. Manager, Rachel Town-Treweek, and Assistant Manager, Danielle McQuoid, explain that until 19 August, teenagers should read 50 pages of a book or other literature then write 50 words about it to register and continue on with a set of challenges. They stand to reap i-goodie rewards and an invite to a swanky central library party in return for good work. “This is the first of its kind at the library” says Danielle. “The goal is for teens to find the library an inviting, relevant and fun place to be. We want them to build lifelong relationships with libraries and we can now do this through the internet as well.” The aim is to improve reading literacy and some of the challenges recognise that kids connect and organise themselves through social media; ‘flash-mobs’ are one example, where significant numbers of people gather briefly for a common cause, show or presentation. “The challenges can be done as 6 slow burn challenges or 1 big bang challenge. We’ve spread it over 4 weeks but because they can be done from the library or at home it is possible for kids to complete it in a much shorter space of time” says Rachel. Chilling out with the CLM crew The pools at Jellicoe Park weren’t the only action-packed place during the July school holiday programme; CLM’s Chill Out Crew had kids engaged in all kinds of activities, in and out of the water.

Testing culinary, fashion & design, and camera skills were standard practice in the first week – as well as summoning up a large helping of courage for the very first CLM Fear Factor Challenge! Junior thrill seekers also enjoyed the Spartan Challenge, some war-time at Megazone, and the chance to show off their director skills on the Media Madness Day, during the second week. While Kori and the Crew work on the October school holidays, CLM still hopes to see your children at their specially designed swim & care programme. Focusing on how beneficial swimming on a regular basis is for youngsters, the CLM After School Care Programme sees kids arrive, have a spot of afternoon tea and do their homework, then have the option of many activities…including a swim. “Guess which one they usually pick?” laughs facility manager Heather Parsons. “There are so many benefits for children with this new programme: fitness, concentration, water safety and of course fun.” Heather says if children are enrolled for at least 2 days (one being Wednesday), they will get a SwimMagic swim lesson included in their fees. That’s not the only fun aimed at kids though. CLM management dreamed up their regular Saturday night Wave Raves to promote “programmes designed for children 6-15 years of age with the intent of giving them a safe, fun place to go on a Saturday night

for a low price.” In June, local youth enjoyed the BLACK OUT PARTY. The Chill Out Crew report having a lot of fun just getting the programme structure and prizes together. “The facility looked amazing with the cool fluorescent decorations. In fact the night went very well for both parents and children thanks to the DJ – Johnny Blaze. We’ve even got some cool photos of the kids who attended” says Heather. At the time of going to print the OLYMPICS themed WAVE RAVE was held, and right now CLM is working on the next fun-filled Wave Rave on August 25th. For contact information see the advertisement this page.

Mangere Bridge Village Santa Parade It might only be August, but it is definitely time to start thinking about The Bridge’s December Santa Parade. Groups, clubs, businesses and associations should get their (red & white) thinking caps on and come up with some fun, festive float designs for Christmas 2012.

It’s not just an opportunity to bring a smile to local faces, it’s an opportunity to show that your organisation has been good enough to sponsor the celebrations. Besides the float parade, there will be entertainment for all the family to consider: Bouncy Castles, Face Painting, Pony & Cart Rides and more. There’s even space for tents and stalls. So get creative and call Town Manager Carol-Anne Armitage on 636-7491 or email info@mangere-bridge.co.nz. The fun will begin on Thursday the 6th of December at 6.30pm.

Flat out in Onehunga A baby seal discovered at Onehunga Lagoon on Sunday 8th July was one of many who popped out of the cold water on a sunny winter day to sunbathe, according to Senior Inspector Kevin Plowright of the SPCA. The phenomenon, which had many locals concerned for the welfare of the seal pup, is very common at this time of year and as long as people follow some simple rules there is no reason not to stand back and admire the glimpse of the wildlife with which we share our waterways. Most important is to leave the seal alone. If it is just sunbathing, then it is quite happy – but it may give you a nasty bite if touched. The sun makes the seal pups lethargic, so it may appear sick or stunned; usually this is not the case. Please don’t feed the seal. Usually its diet is live fish so it probably won’t be interested anyway, but if it does eat anything the risk is that it will start coming back for more, or perhaps become ill.

LAQCs | Rental Properties | Businesses

If the seal is in any danger, or you are concerned for its welfare, then call either the SPCA or DOC. Seals sometimes end up by the side of the road or, as in this case, in an off leash dog area – and either of these organisations will send someone to rescue the animal and release it safely in a more appropriate location.

What you could achieve before summer The Onehunga Weightloss Challenge is held every Thursday at 5.45pm – 6.30pm at the Community Centre. Over 12 weeks participants are given advice on nutrition, covering topics like protein, calories, digestive health, carbohydrates, water, fats, dining out, exercise, and heart health, with an emphasis on long term good health and weight management.

As well as weekly meetings, website access is available for more information and a lot of support from everyone. The Weightloss Challenge programme supports all healthy weight loss programmes. Coaches can recommend easy and successful options that fit the budget. The three people with the highest percentage of weight lost at the end of the course win the prize money. The winner gets 50%, the second is 30%, the third 20% and another prize goes to the person with the highest inch loss. Current Weightloss Challenge winner Peter Taurere had no intention to join when his worried sister, Josie, brought him down for a look. When he was put on the body analysis scales he saw that his reading for visceral fat (fat surrounding vital organs) was

higher than anyone else, and he was in. His reading showed he was a high risk for cardiovascular disease.

I craved bad food, ate and drank a lot of rubbish and was very overweight. I snored a lot and was up 2 - 3 times to the loo at night. I woke tired and feeling un-refreshed. Despite improving the quality of my diet with this, I have not noticed any extra cost to the budget but the benefits have been enormous. My health is heaps better. I sleep better, don't snore anymore and sleep through the night. I feel like I have a life back I didn’t even know I had - like being wakened from a dream. I have 2 hours of extra energy a day to invest in me and my family. I now run 5 km 3 or 4 times a week and have developed better communication with the family through the time I now spend involved with family activities. In 8 months of attending the weight loss challenge I have reached my goal weight after losing 38 kg and heaps of inches. As a extra bonus I have also won over $1,400 worth of prizes. My wife is wrapped in my changes and I feel so good I never want to go back to who I was.

Let’s talk about Bling... with Maire and Christine

We are far from athletes at Onehunga Jewellers, but we do have a special respect for gold, silver and bronze, especially if we can wear it around our necks! So we have been learning everything there is to know about the soon to be handed out victory medals at the Olympics.

Mural for peace Onehunga’s bus station is suddenly a much brighter place with the addition of a bold new mural on the back of the Look Sharpe Store, corner of Pearce Street and Upper Municipal Place. Ever since Onehunga YMCA – homed at Jordan Recreation Centre across the way- started inspiring local youth to get involved in the Raise Up N Represent Crew, they have hoped to make the bus shelter a brighter, warmer looking place. In July this year the first steps were made possible by Maungakiekie/ Tamaki Local Board’s sign off for SLIPs funding, and the time and expertise of well known Kingsland based artist Adrian Jackman. Jackman said the kids had a strong influence on the art work. “They really wanted to show the connection between One Tree Hill and Mangere Mountain. Peace symbols were also important like the paper crane and the Ginko leaves and as far as style goes we felt as we live in a digital age, the artwork should have a strong graphic quality that represents today’s generation. “ The following ‘artists in training’ can be thanked for their enthusiasm and time: Anthony Vavia, Aravanh Thaivichit, Esera Leti, Hamuera Peehikuru, Jayden Attewell, Joshua Cheer, Katie Stephenson, Leanne Mellsop, Lionel Taumoepeau, Ngapokoevaru Smith.

A total of 4700 medals have been cast and hand-finished in Southern Wales, by the Royal Mint: a massive task undertaken by just 15 staff. The silver and bronze medals are made in solid form, but the gold is actually made in sterling silver then gold plated with no less than six grams of gold. At 85mm diameter and 7mm thick, we felt surely that this must be a huge incentive for over 15,000 athletes competing in the Olympic and Paralympic Games this year. The first medals were given out in the Games at St Louis in 1904 and since then the medals have incorporated different designs to honour the spirit of the competition and the host city. This year, artist David Watkins designed the medal as a "Jewel like depiction of the logo" with the goddess Nike, the winged goddess of victory. She reminds us of the tradition of the games, and the hard work required to win. London’s Thames river is incorporated too - no doubt they will prove gracious hosts, security or not! But if, like us, the reality of receiving an actual medal is slim to none...simply come in-store and celebrate the Olympics with your own piece of gold or silver! Remember: gold is more precious than ever, and sterling silver is super affordable...and there is always something for the person who deserves a medal in your life. On the ball The Te Papapa-Onehunga Rugby Club started the third season of its local schools competition in July. This year seven teams from five schools took part: Oranga Primary, Te Papapa Primary, Onehunga Primary, St Joseph’s and St Mary’s played every Thursday lunchtime at Fergusson Park.

The Year 5 and 6 pupils spent last term preparing for the competition with the Club’s Rugby Development Officer, Sione Fanguna, visiting all the schools to run fitness and skills sessions. The training is paying off, as once the teams took the field this season it was obvious the players knew their roles. Kids Rugby usually consists of a mass of youngsters all surrounding the ball, but this season the teams in Te Papapa-Onehunga’s completion stayed in their positions and had learnt skills like not using their hands in rucks. Most importantly, win or lose, everyone clearly enjoyed themselves, including the large group of parents and supporters on the sideline. This term’s competition is just part of the Club’s efforts to get local children involved in the sport. They also run a non-tackle ‘Ripa Rugby’ competition for younger children and in summer offer Touch Rugby for all ages. The current competition is a mixed competition for both boys and girls and while it does include tackling, scrums and lineouts are ‘uncontested.’ As well as training the children the club - with help from local businesses - ensures all the players have mouthguards to wear, supplies the jerseys and pays for a bus to get the teams to the park on time and back to class promptly afterwards. The Prosport Academy supplies the referees, and some on the spot coaching.

Charter schools chat A July meeting on charter schools held by MP for Maungakiekie, Peseta Sam Lotu-liga, was attended by a mixture of Tamaki and Maungakiekie residents, parents and teachers.

Sam was joined by two members of the New Zealand Model of Charter School Working Group: Chair and public affairs specialist Catherine Isaac and Pacific communities champion Dr Margaret Southwick, who both agreed the subject had been highly contentious. “So far opinion on charter schools has been fearful, curious, supportive and opposed” said Isaac. Sam and Dr Southwick both said the demise of Tamaki Intermediate, possibly a pilot charter school, was an example of ‘educational under achievement ...concentrated amongst low-income, Maori and Pacific Island communities’ further stated in their brochure, prepared by the parliamentary office of Act’s John Banks. Onehunga High’s Business School, founded by Tony Falkenstein, is a local example of what’s understood to be a successful charter school. The monetary and structural nuts and bolts of the charter drive could not be explained at the meeting as “they were not at that stage yet.” Unfortunately Onehunga Community News questions were not answered after the meeting, prior to going to print. But Catherine had assured attendees that charter schools would not charge pupils fees, would not be allowed to operate as profit making entities, and would be held closely accountable for student achievement in a structure that allowed them to set their own curriculum. Government would pay the school a per-pupil fee as it does with every school. There are a number of New Zealand schools operating outside the 90% government funded state system already: private, integrated or “special character”, Kura Kaupapa Maori, designated character, correspondence and home-based schooling. Funding to improve neglected areas The Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board have $4.5 million of funding to dedicate to projects which will improve Onehunga’s streetscape and facilities over the next three years. Board member Simon Randall reports that three areas which will receive the funding are the top of Onehunga Mall shopping strip (north of Arthur Street), the area around the bus station and further funding for improvements to the Jordan Recreation Centre.

The top end of Onehunga Mall is currently being assessed, and it is anticipated that works to be carried out will include resurfacing and making the area more attractive. Better connections across the Arthur Street intersection are under consideration in an effort to strengthen the connection along the Mall. Issues identified as needing solutions in the bus station area include the safety and security, speed of traffic, steep, narrow and uneven footpaths, and difficult access to the car park. Half a million dollars will be spent this financial year on this area, with the lights already ordered. Over the next three years there will be $1.5 million spent to improve access around the precinct, making it safer and more user friendly and linking the various facilities. The final $1 million will be added to the fund for overhauling the Jordan Recreation/YMCA - in particular this money is earmarked for facilities for youth. In the 2015/16 financial year the centre is due for a total refurbishment costing around $7.5m. This further injection of funding will allow more of the wish list of desirable attributes for such a integral community facility to be achieved.

A principal with a vision Principal Derek Linington doesn’t have far to go to work these days. The Onehunga resident has just taken up the head role at Royal Oak Intermediate, after lead roles at Bailey Road School, Auckland Normal and Remuera Intermediates Schools. What he is really looking forward to is the chance to use his feel for the local community to achieve one of the main objectives in the school charter: to lift school standards and make Royal Oak Intermediate the local community’s school of choice for years 7 & 8. “Emerging adolescents are an awesome age group of kids. These people have a unique and different set of needs” says Mr Linington. He points to areas where the school can truly cater to these needs, especially the flash new Knowledge Centre. The rest of the Technology Specialist Teaching Block will be refurbished within the next year and Board of Trustees Chair, Helen Stuart, explains the importance of the additions and upgrades for every student. “The great thing about specialist subjects is that it shows kids the relevance of what they learn in basic classroom subjects like maths. Students get to apply measurements and proportions in a real world sense and this can really then strengthen learning back in the classroom as confidence grows.” The computer suite and resources centre in the new block also support that today’s kids are “wired differently due to this digital age” as the Principal would have it. “I read somewhere that our age group are digital immigrants, and they’re digital natives” he

laughs. Regardless of technological advances though, there are a few key components to making a good school, says Derek. With the Board he is working on defining a belief structure for pupils to uphold; The Royal Oak Intermediate Way. “Kids need to belong to something and they need to understand what we want them to be like. This means structure and clear limits.” Derek is aware that these collective values are upheld at the schools they get pupils from and those they feed into – this is another area that Royal Oak Intermediate is looking to foster.

Healthy New Choice

You'd be hard pushed to find premises more dramatically transformed that those of the newly homed urban health and foodie-mart, Huckleberry Farms. A stone’s throw from the Royal Oak roundabout, the store showcases a rustic brick & beam interior previously unseen when the premise held a commercial stationery business. The homely chocolate colour scheme and extended car park outside make the place an attractive option for anyone interested in wellbeing. Logistically, it is quite a change for Huckleberry Farms - it sat on the corner of Greenlane and Manukau Roads for 17 years. But the product and service range still houses naturopaths, natural medicines and supplements, whole foods and organic products that customers have come to know and trust. Including meat, product is sourced from sustainable, local suppliers where possible. In store naturopath Stephanie Young says they offer free advice and that all consultants are qualified. They offer a full naturopathic dispensary too. “It’s the ideal go-to for people with special dietary needs, allergies or those looking for an alternative medical diagnosis. But we treat common ailments too of course: cold and flu symptoms sleep and digestive issues, chronic pain, and of course stress.” Stephanie says that their customers are truly “intergenerational” and come from many demographics. Huckleberry Farms has a sibling store in Glen Innes and both share the same ownership as health institution Harvest Wholefoods in Grey Lynn. Installing a mid-store coffee bar serving mouth watering, lowguilt food is proving a hit with locals – they serve and sell coffee from one of Auckland’s most iconic brands, Kokako. Safety concerns need consistency Transpower’s toughening stance on enforcing adherence to the National Policy Statement on Electricity Policy (NPSET) appears to be causing some anomalies in the way development in Auckland is treated.

Auckland Council have said that they will introduce a Corridor Management Plan (CMP) in April 2013, after due consideration of all the issues and impacts. Some recent, local, examples of the way the rules are being applied show the need for such careful consideration. The redevelopment of the Onehunga Foreshore was delayed recently by two challenges to the foreshore consent decision. One of these was Transpower - apparently concerned about the placement of footpaths. In answer to our queries Transpower stated that they “had concerns that the towers could be used recreationally (people could climb the transmission tower) and therefore cause a public safety issue”. So a request for changes was made. Not unreasonable perhaps, but how many transmission towers are on public land easily accessed by all and sundry? Why was this particular one at issue? In the nearby suburb of Lynfield a boundary between a private home and council land is demarcated by a 2mtr fence built between the legs of a transmission tower – surely much more of a safety issue than a footpath near a tower? Just down the road from the lagoon is the intersection between Gloucester Park Road and Neilson Street. Over recent months this area has been the subject of intensive road works as the motorway on and off ramps and Neilson Street are upgraded and widened. Less than a metre from the road is a transmission tower. Sitting

at the traffic lights on the SH20 off ramp you are right beside it. If Transpower is genuinely concerned about public safety issues, how about the prospect of a truck missing the corner as it races to beat the lights on to the motorway onramp, and ploughing straight into the tower? Transpower have told the Onehunga Community News that the transmission line corridors are used to minimise the risk to people and property. But if people are going to be asked to surrender their rights to develop private property as they wish to, without compensation, within a currently undisclosed corridor under transmission lines, then some consistency in the application of what constitutes public safety would be welcome.

A 'counting the years Anyone who has more than a passing acquaintance with Onehunga will have heard of TV Gerrard Beeson – local accountant, former Mayor, Rotarian, Justice of the Peace. Sixty years ago Gerry set up an office in Onehunga, breaking with the tradition of city offices to move closer to home, and what he hoped would become his client base. He was raised just around the corner in Royal Oak but his family foothold in the area goes back to great grandparents – the Ninnis family – who built the stone house on Princes Street to house their large family. Great grandma Ninnis is buried in St Peter’s Churchyard. Gerry went to Royal Oak Primary, Monte Cecilia, St Peters College (Foundation Pupil), St Patrick’s College Silverstream and gained his Bachelor of Commerce from what was the University of New Zealand. A strong belief in community has led to many public service roles – in Gerry’s own words: “God gave me a talent and I like to keep exercising it for him.” Part of utilising this talent is declining to retire. “Retirement should not be compulsory, there are great skills to be learned from older folk” says Gerry. An outstanding example of this is long time employee Pat Kelly. Gerry credits Pat with spending 39 years dotting the “i’s” and crossing the “t’s” – a meticulous approach indispensible in an accounting practice. Pat has lived in the Onehunga area all her life – in fact she still lives in the house she was born in. One of eight children, she attended St Josephs for her primary education and then spent three years at St Benedict’s (now Marcellin) where she excelled at maths. Her

working life began with a short stint at the Chamber of Commerce, but did not like commuting to the city, so moved to local building firm HJ Short after just a month. The owner of a reputable firm, Harry Short won contracts to build Middlemore Hospital, Council buildings and the Jellicoe pool complex. His wife Viola had her own gardening programme, and they built a large show home with a fabulous garden in Mangere Bridge to showcase their combined talents. With the closure of this firm Pat moved to Gerry’s office, and to this day ensures that the wages get paid for a number of local businesses, while keeping up to date with changes to tax requirements such as GST and PAYE. In her spare time she is very involved with her church, where she has been keeping the books up to date for years. Although Gerry says it is a “game of chicken who retires first”, Pat can claim the prerogative of seniority and hints that she is not totally averse to the idea. Whatever future decisions these two wonderful people make, they have for decades shown to their community a fine example of a life of commitment and of service.

Support your school and look great Onehunga Primary School is updating its public image, and offering you the opportunity to join in. The school has been working with Auckland University architecture student Melanie Pau, who has produced a design for improving its Arthur Street entranceway. The design incorporates Onehunga Primary School’s Enviro School status, including edible plants growing throughout the structures.

For the many families committed to supporting Onehunga Primary there are a couple of ways which assistance is required. One is support in sourcing donations of goods and equipment for the work, which is designed to be modular and involve community participation. Another is volunteering to help out with the actual construction, which will include a boardwalk to protect existing heritage trees, incorporating signage and a sheltered area to socialise while waiting to collect children from school. Possibly the most fun way to assist though will be to join Bronwyn Yelverton’s Look Great evening – returning by popular demand after the success of the 2010 event. Bronwyn is a Personal Image Consultant who believes that you deserve to Look Great everyday. “Looking and feeling great shouldn’t be hard, but it does take some time, thought and effort. Discover how to look and feel more confident, younger, healthier and more vibrant.” If you would like to update your image, discover what colours and styles will complement you most and have a well coordinated wardrobe for any occasion, then before you buy any new clothes this season come and join us at the 2012 Look Great fundraising event.

Turbo-charge your business

Showcasing local talent Offering quality early childhood education in your community

The artworks exhibited in the foyer of the Onehunga Community Centre and Library during Matariki were produced not only by artistic individuals, but also by members of groups as diverse as flax weaving, Sew Styley sewing, Picasso kids, Rick Julian’s art class, a knitting group and others.

Community Centre coordinator Michelle Mitchell spent eighteen hours arranging and hanging the exhibition, with help from M.I.T. Travel and Tourism students Tu’a and Sani. The result is diverse, fascinating and affordable – a great showcase for talented artists in the area. The exhibition is now closed, but the classes from which many of these people gained inspiration and confidence run throughout the year. Dictionaries gifted to local school

Onehunga/One Tree Hill Rotarians have once again donated dictionaries to local year 5 students. Our photo shows the delighted pupils of St Joseph’s Primary School after they received their beautifully bound Usborne dictionaries from Rotary Board member Barry Stafford, with Headmaster Andy Thompson in attendance. Mr Thompson expressed the appreciation of the school community for Rotary’s support of the school, which includes scholarships and awards. At the end of the year each student will take their dictionary home, where it will provide a useful reference tool right through their schooling.

strengthening faith , developing pride , seeking excellence

An eye on the past Ray Barrett likes to think he has “one eye on the past and a hope for the future of Onehunga.” He opened Rumage, the antiques and collectables shop on Onehunga Mall, 6 months ago with intention of continuing the Onehunga tradition of having an antiques and collectable shop in the older shopping area.

“I see Rumage as selling a real mixture of precious things including those that your mother threw out! These can range from the unusual to the practical” he says. They also offer crockery hire; the current trend for using older crockery in a new setting is gaining popularity at a momentous rate, with increasing numbers of cafes and caterers offering the kinds of high teas that require vintage tea sets. “Since weddings and high tea parties are a common occurrence in our social calendar now-adays I hire out the cups and saucers to make the occasion complete. One has to keep up with the trends too – vintage might be in now but next month it could be Crown Lynn.” Ray also says that mixing and matching styles is becoming more popular. Anyone with a penchant for ‘the past’ should call in to be regaled by Ray – his stories and traditional accounts are as fascinating as the objects d’art that fill the little shop. Opening hours are 10am to 5 pm Tuesday to Saturday at 131 Onehunga Mall.

Community Constable Students encouraged Help reduce property to dream crime in Onehunga

Many residents in the community ask themselves, what can I do to make my home and community safer? The answer is simple. Know your neighbours!

You should be familiar with your neighbours and know who they are. We all need to look out for each other and report any suspicious behaviour or activity to Police. Although crime in the Onehunga area is on the decrease compared to this time last year, increased awareness is needed by everyone. Unfortunately not enough people are reporting suspicious behaviour which results in an increase in property crime and burglaries. Recently I was approached by members of our community who advised that individuals had been entering properties and door knocking to see if occupants are at home, and when confronted, say they are looking for someone and give a bogus name, or that they are looking for their dog. Frankly 9 times out of 10 these excuses are not true. This sort of behaviour is suspicious and must be reported to Police. If you have a feeling that something is not right, it probably isn’t. If you see any person acting in such a way, get a good description and report them to Police straight away by calling 111. Take note of what they are wearing, from the cap on their head to the shoes on their feet; take the time to get a good description including age, build, and ethnicity. For further crime prevention advice or information about setting up a Neighbourhood Support Group contact me either at the Onehunga Police Station on 622-8722 or on email at donald. allan@police.govt.nz.

On Tuesday 26th June the Dean of AUT Business School, Dr Geoff Perry, visited Onehunga High School.

He joined 232 leaders visiting over 250 classrooms across New Zealand as part of the Sir Peter Blake Trust’s Dream Team. The nationwide event, organised as part of The Sir Peter Blake Trust’s Leadership Week, was expected to reach over 6500 students in primary, intermediate, and secondary schools. Each leader was required to speak to a classroom for one-hour, to share their own leadership experiences and success stories, inspiring kiwi kids all around the country to Dare to Dream. Dr Perry, who visited year 12 students at OHS Business School, spoke about his own leadership as Dean of AUT University’s Business School. “New Zealand needs future leaders who will dare to dream. Everyone has the potential to be a leader. It’s not just CEO’s of top companies who are among our greatest leaders, but often those who simply take others with them on a journey to success. As a university Business School, we are educating tomorrow’s workforce and therefore have a fundamental responsibility to help inspire students to become leaders.” Linda Everett, Head of Onehunga High Business School says that the students in the entrepreneurship class were delighted to welcome Dr Perry. “The Sir Peter Blake Leadership Awards were created to celebrate leaders and visionaries in our community that perform in a manner that inspires and motivates others to do the same,” says Everett. “It is Onehunga High Business School’s mission to turn out students who adopt that same philosophy. For that reason we welcomed Dr Perry to share with us his thoughts on leadership.”

8 years of art at The Bridge Find your old fabrics Secretary of the Mangere Bridge Art Group, Gailene Marsden, is preparing for the annual Art show at St James Church. 2012 marks 8 years of the small friendly group meeting once a week, not simply to progress their own work but to support and critique the work of others. For many artists one of the hardest things is making the time to work on their art, says Gailene. But the Thursday morning classes provide that opportunity for people of a similar mind. “As well as bridge residents we have people coming from all over Auckland you know; I myself now live in St Heliers and others are coming back to us after moving to Howick and beyond. We feel coming across town in rush hour traffic is well worth the effort.” The fruits of their collective labour will be available for viewing on the weekend of 25-26th August from 10 am to 4pm. Visitors might like to consider the value and originality that the wellpriced community artworks offer, produced in a range of media: oil, pastel, acrylic, pen, ink and watercolour. Entry is free and refreshments are available all weekend.

Sourcing information from the Wellington coordinator for what is seen as ‘Australasia’s favourite fabric fiesta’ she has now set up the Auckland operation of the same name. “Fabric-a-brac is about bringing together the many ‘fabric-aholics’ out there who have collected more fabric than they will ever be able to use, with others that want affordable quality fabrics.” Anyone who fits the category, barring people wanting to sell finished products, should know the event is also a philanthropic one; some of the proceeds will go to the Mercy Hospice in Auckland. “Stallholders simply take a table to sell their unwanted items at a friendly, free event, with a great vibe.” Vanessa is looking for stallholders for the 18th August, Freemans Bay Community Hall event at 52 Hepburn Road, from 9am – 12.30pm. Nolene Leech has just recently moved into her new two bedroom apartment at Selwyn Heights Village. Moving out of her four bedroom home of 37 years was a big step for Nolene, but the rewards far outweigh the upheaval. Nolene’s new life is just about to begin. Rotary celebration glitters Changeover night for Onehunga/One Tree Hill Rotary was red, white and very sparkly. The annual dinner is a celebration of the clubs efforts throughout the year, an awards ceremony and marks the official change from the outgoing to the incoming Board and Administration team.

This year there was a lot to celebrate, with successful ventures undertaken internationally and locally. A project to provide clean, fresh water to a hospital in Vanuatu is one of the larger undertakings, while local schools, groups and children benefit from grants and sponsorship in a variety of causes. An important part of the evening is spent celebrating those who have given great service over the years – and this included non-Rotarians. This year Paul Harris Fellowships were awarded to Peter Grace, Stuart Tunnicliffe, Rob Kestle and Faye Philp, while Paul Harris Fellowship sapphire pins were presented to Lyn Voyde and Neil Read in acknowledgement of their sustained contributions. Non-Rotarians Trevor Burnnand and Robin Solomon received Paul Harris Fellowships for their services to the Vanuatu project. The incoming committee members are Ant Marton (President), Bill Appleton (President elect), Lyn Voyde (President nominee), Gwynyth Carr (Secretary), Lloyd Albiston (Treasurer) and Board members Ray Hall, Eileen Petrie, Barry Stafford and Howard Moore. Outgoing President Mavis Moody thanked all those who had given their time and energy to Rotary, making particular note of the Board and Administration team. As she, literally, stepped down from the position – her petite stature meant that a special box

had to be constructed to enable ease of access to the microphone – Mavis was handed a large bunch of flowers. New President Ant Marton introduced the theme for the next year – Peace through Service – and expressed a desire to “pass the peace in our hearts to those that we serve”. Onehunga/One Tree Hill Rotary have an exciting year of projects to look forward to, including a joint project with Onehunga High Construction School and Housing for Humanity. They plan to construct a home on site at the school which will then be moved to a section and sold to a family in need of a low cost home.

Laugh and be happy A conference party

A surprise

Two small-town merchants were visiting New York City for the first time to attend a conference. There was a large party thrown, with lots of food and drink. At the end of the party, they both staggered outside.

On a whim a man decided to get his wife a dozen roses and surprise her after work.

One guy crossed the street, while the other stumbled into a subway entrance. When the 1st guy reached the other side of the street, he noticed the other emerging from the subway stairs. "Where ya been?" he slurred. "I don't know," gushed the other guy, "but you should see the train set that guy has in his basement!"

Lawyer rankings What's the difference between a good lawyer and a great lawyer? A: A good lawyer knows the law. A great lawyer knows the judge.

The minute he opened the door, his wife started screaming at him, “This is the worst day that I have EVER had! The kids have been terrible. They got in a food fight, the washing machine broke and flooded the basement, I burned dinner and the dog chewed up my best pair of shoes…” She then looked at the roses he was holding, “…and now you’ve obviously done something wrong!”

'Five Horses' is her name A man asked an American Indian what was his wife's name. He replied, "She is called Five Horses". The man said, "That's an unusual name for your wife. What does it mean?" The old Indian answered, "It old Indian name. It mean... NAG, NAG, NAG, NAG, NAG!

available under the Waste Minimisation Fund. They acquired $370,000 to use in reducing the amount of rubbish going to landfills. Ten other businesses with the same goal shared the remainder. The money in the Waste Minimisation Fund is drawn from the levy people and businesses pay when disposing of waste at landfills and other facilities.
