Volunteers needed to keep community safe Community Patrols are coming to Onehunga. Discussion around setting up the patrols has occurred in the past, but the lack of resources has been a major stumbling block. This time the Onehunga Business Association has been able to support the project while the New Zealand Police will provide specific training through an NZQA accredited course.

Onehunga’s Community Constable, Don Allan, says that Community Patrols already run successfully in many areas around New Zealand. They work quite simply by training volunteers to watch over their neighbourhood for signs of illegal activity. Most patrols are carried out from a specially marked car; high visibility vests and a dedicated police contact number are provided. Onehunga is extremely fortunate to also have access to a network of CCTV cameras, and volunteers can also be trained to monitor activity in this way.

Volunteers are integral to the success of this venture. You do not need any specific qualifications – just an interest in keeping your community safe. You will need to provide one form of photo identification, and allow the Police to run a background check. The training times and the patrols are designed to fit as much as possible around the availability of those who would like to serve their community. Weekends and evenings will suit those who work traditional hours, but daytime shifts can also be very helpful; what ever time you have available could be of benefit to the patrols. This is a great opportunity for everyone to support the Police by becoming their eyes and ears, as we all know they cannot be everywhere at once. Along with neighbourhood watch groups, this is a key way in which we can reduce crime and feel safer and more secure in our daily lives. You are invited to attend the first meeting to discuss the patrols and lend your support. To make this initiative a success we need to share the load, and people with good organisational skills who are prepared to serve on the committee will be vital. The public meeting will be held in the foyer of the Onehunga Library/ Community Centre, 83 Church Street, Onehunga on Wednesday 25th July at 6.30pm. Contact Amanda Kinzett at the Onehunga Business Association, phone 636-8535, or Donald Allan, Onehunga’s Community Constable, phone 634-1064 for further information.

Believe project brightens fence

At an Onehunga Primary School assembly in June several of the children stood proudly at the front of the hall to receive recognition for winning an artwork competition.

But the bright, cheerful pictures of flowers and bugs weren’t just destined to remain on the white sheets of art paper. Thanks to the Toyota Believe project, these designs will be immortalised on plywood and cut out to decorate a bare stretch of school fence. In charge of sponsorship and marketing for the Believe project, Jonelle Port confirms the school will get a $3000 donation to breathe some life into the children’s physical environment. “The project is in its 4th year and 10th round now. Anyone or any organisation can apply for a scholarship and if they meet the ‘if you can dream it, you can do it’ greater-good criteria, their cause is posted up on our website for the public to vote on. Onehunga’s fence project won fair and square. We’re so pleased to be able to help” she said. Friend of Onehunga Primary, mum and part-time

teacher, Diane McClymont, helped to organise the effort and thanks the community for their support. “We had to drum up as much support as we could by the end of May by getting family, friends and our local community to vote for us online. We were so excited to be told we had won. We had close to 2000 votes!!! We are very thankful to everyone who took the time to vote!!” Diane says Auckland Council’s Graffti Prevention team will be involved as will “many other individuals pledging their time.” She said that all the children put a lot of effort into the nature themed art competition, which produced many wonderful designs.

Historic Trust requires research volunteers Some months ago the New Zealand Historic Places Trust wrote a report on Onehunga called Onehunga@Risk.

Many Onehunga people wrote the submissions that would form the basis of this document. The Trust is now looking for people who are now interested in carrying on the work started in this document. This would involve doing some research, in which they would be trained, and in helping to prepare some work that would lead to a submission on the newly started Auckland Unitary Plan. If you are interested, please leave a message at the Onehunga Community House, telephone 636-9900 or email achouse@xtra.co.nz

YMCA Onehunga reels in awards After receiving the YMCA award for Leading by Example in early June, Jo Chapman said she felt “humbled” when she read the testimonials people had provided about her.

The Onehunga YMCA Centre Manager, based at Jordan Recreation and Fitness Centre, was also thrilled that her team won the YMCA’s George Briggs Youth Award for their work creating Volume 1 and 2; part of the annual Common Ground event. This award is understood to be handed out to regional branches who deliver youth programs to a very high standard. The winning testimonial document that staff drew up indicates that work to better the lives of youth in Onehunga was one of Jo’s major accomplishments: ‘In 2008 Onehunga had a problem with organised youth fights at the bus depot…Jo was a founding member of the group of business operators, community groups and emergency service providers, primarily the police…who have worked tirelessly to engage youth with a sense of pride. From this focus Common Ground was created. For this purpose a partnership of youth development bodies was formed. Youth from YMCA Onehunga ‘Raise Up N Represent’ programme, Onehunga Community Centre, Auckland City Council – CAYAD, AK Active, Salvation Army, Oranga Community Centre Youth and The Tongan Youth Trust discussed and designed the event. Common Ground is now an annual event during Youth Week driven by

Jo, Kat Thomas and Onehunga Community Centre.’ Funding has just been approved for the fifth musical contingent of Common Ground: Volume 3. Dates are yet to be established. Staff said Jo is ‘very capable of breaking down barriers and allowing everyone to be equal.’ They explained she is a great team player and coach: ‘She doesn’t solve her team’s problems; she works with her team members so they solve their own problems enabling them to develop their own skill set for greater things.’

Sam's month in review My month as your local MP has been both exciting and demanding. I accompanied the Governor-General to Samoa, as the Government’s representative, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Samoa’s Independence from New Zealand.

We attended the Independence Day flag raising ceremony and marches, with our country well represented by the NZ Police, NZ Defence Forces and other community groups. We also had the opportunity to visit schools, hospitals and villages decimated by the 2009 Tsunami. We witnessed the amazing work done by New Zealand aid agencies and service organisations that, through the generosity of New Zealanders, have helped fund and rebuild these highly devastated areas. Locally, I joined the Police on a Friday night out in one of their patrol cars. I travelled throughout the Maungakieke electorate while also visiting the city and parts of Counties-Manukau. I was impressed by the professionalism and courage of our police officers on the front line in what sometimes are difficult conditions. What stood out for me was the negative impact that alcohol has on our communities. While I recognise that drinking alcohol is a personal choice, and most drink sensibly and with discretion, it is clear that overconsumption has such damaging effects on our families, communities and our nation. That is why our Government will be passing the Alcohol Reform Bill. This bill focuses on alcohol-related harm, crime, disorder, and public health problems, especially where our young people are concerned. It aims to reduce excessive drinking, improve the operation of the alcohol licensing system, including community input on licensing, and to support the responsible sale, supply, and safe consumption of alcohol. Licences

will be harder to get and easier to lose. The Government recognises that different communities have different needs, best understood by local people. This bill empowers communities to address local issues like the concentration, location, and opening hours of alcohol outlets. Finally, based on overwhelming community feedback to my last electorate wide survey, I have decided to vote in favour of raising the purchase age for alcohol to 20 for both on and off licenses. I attended a public meeting at Te Papapa School to discuss the needs of local parents to have an early childhood centre based at the school. I have heard the pleas of the local community and I am determined to make this a priority in my work. The benefits of participation in early childhood education are immense and well understood. As the need for these services is high in our community I will be working with the ministry and our local community to make this a reality. I also joined the Te Papapa-Onehunga Rugby Club at their sponsors/old boys day. While the club's senior men’s and women’s teams suffered defeats on the day, it was fair to say that rugby was the winner on the day! There was an extremely good turnout of past and present members at a club with a proud and rich history. Onehunga High School once again impressed me in hosting their Business School Hall of Fame awards. Congratulations to the 3 inductees: Debbie Cavit, Peter Mayow and Kath Watson. I joined over 200 people at the Onehunga Workingmen’s Club to raise funds for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. What a worthy cause, with a boisterous crowd who enjoyed some fun performances and hearty food. Finally, I spoke at the opening of the Lifeline Aotearoa building in Greenlane. These are fabulous facilities for an organisation which provide valuable counselling and helpline services to those in need. Peseta Sam Lotu-liga, MP for Maungakiekie

Cleaner air for Penrose Last month, Auckland Council brought attention to Tasman Insulation's Penrose factory emissions.

They were congratulated on two years of research to find a solution to dramatically reduce emissions. For years, a major steam plume clearly visible from the Southern motorway - had been spewing out nasty PM10 particles into in the industrial suburb. Council says that now, apart from water vapour emission in cold weather, the steam plume has ceased. The improvement was a result of installing a Wet Electrostatic Precipitator (WESP). “Auckland has a problem with PM10” says Resource Consents Manager Heather Harris. This is the particle matter discharged from gas stacks such as the one at Tasman Insulation’s Penrose site. “The new WESP will remove 90 per cent of PM10 emissions, leaving no constant visible plume” she says. “Tasman Insulation Ltd and the Auckland Council's air quality team are to be congratulated for taking such a proactive approach. Tasman Insulation is a good example of a company with a significant manufacturing site that is taking responsibility for keeping Auckland’s air clean,” said Len Brown. Tasman’s General Manager, Tony Te Au, says that the company searched worldwide for the best solution that would not only help them reduce emissions to below their consented level, but to the lowest level practicable. James Evans, Chairman of Penrose Business Association was also very positive about the investment. "It's great news that Penrose businesses are having a pro-active and responsible approach to keeping Auckland's environment clean" he says. Onehunga Community News was unable to contact Heather Harris to ask how many other businesses in the area need to improve, or are already making emission related improvements, but it is understood that compliance on such matters is going to be more rigorous in future as the renewal of industrial resource consents is sought.

Caring commitment - the team approach Kam and Yogesh Dahya share a passion for their chosen work as Real Estate agents. Their professional backgrounds – Kam in nursing, Yogesh in architecture – allow them to have a range of skills which make them stand out in their field.

All good nurses know the value of empathy, of listening well and understanding people’s needs. Similarly, all good architects have an eye for design detail, construction and an understanding of building processes. The Dahya’s bring these attributes, plus a commitment to an outstanding service, to every property that they market. They pride themselves on being honest, friendly and supportive, understanding that buying and selling a home can be one of the most stressful experiences in your life. Yogesh adds that they are “very proud to work for a family owned company, where family values are respected.” He describes these values as including integrity, trust, transparency, and the importance of putting people first. Yogesh says that one of his

proudest professional achievements was working with the team who designed Auckland’s award winning Art Gallery and Auckland University School of Business. But now working with his wife in real estate brings new challenges and rewards. The Dahya’s always work together. Kam and Yogesh will give you an honest evaluation of your property’s value, discuss the best way to market your asset and always keep you informed and up to date on progress. The feedback provided by their satisfied clients consistently mentions their willingness to go the extra mile, their patience and skill in all aspects of the sales process and their reliability and professionalism. Living in Hillsborough and working from Royal Oak, they have a good understanding of the local market, to which they add their own special element of caring commitment. The property market is still strong in Auckland, with the shortage of available houses and land creating a demand that has yet to be satisfied, so it is a great time to sell. Low interest rates also make it a great time to buy. Whatever your real estate requirements, the Dahya’s can help you to a successful outcome. Call Kam on 021 702 184 or 626 3328, or go to unconditional.co.nz/ kamdahya or www.facebook.com/kamrealestate to see the results of this tireless couple's commitment to success.

Racquet club on your doorstep

July is a busy and competitive month at Royal Oak Racquets on Symonds Street, Royal Oak. The club has been hosting tournaments since its inception in 1904 and this year‘s activities are still testament to its popularity.

July 6 starts off with the New Zealand Grocery Charity Tournament which raises funds for The Foundation for Youth Development. Not a week later, the Royal Oak Open kicks off – a squash tournament playing out from 12th July. Finals will be played on Sunday 15th July. Club manager John Fletcher encourages people to come down and watch some of the top squash talent the country has to offer. Spectating is completely free. “We’ve got some of the top players in the country competing – last

Orpheus anniversary When H.M.S. Orpheus struck the Manukau bar and sank nearly 150 years ago she was carrying not only a full complement of crew but also a small number of officers and men of the Royal Marines. They were coming to New Zealand to bolster the forces already here and enforce the rule of colonial law. Nonetheless, when the vessel sank, with the loss of 189 of the 259 persons aboard, it was Maori from the many nearby communities as well as European settlers who raced to the rescue or took up the task of retrieving bodies in the aftermath. Many stories have grown around the fateful events of this day. According to some, an ancient and sacred Puriri tree which was cut down on Puketutu Island the day before the sinking brought bad luck to the area. Families carry personal stories of lives lost or saved. Author Ruth Park tells in her autobiography of the adventures of her paternal grandfather, who enlisted under an unknown name after a disagreement with his stepfather and either swam ashore, or was picked up by a smaller boat before beginning life anew in Ngaruwahia. If you have a family story relating to the Orpheus, from any cultural perspective, as either a descendant of a survivor, rescuer or witness please contact Bridget Graham on (09) 636-9900 or B.M.Graham@xtra.co.nz

year we had former world number 38, Kashif Shuja, playing here. This year will see another great round of games to watch.” Fitting in around this are school holiday squash programmes and junior club nights every Friday from 4.30pm. The Club has a committed squash coach to see all ages get value for membership money and when tennis starts in Term 4 members can also enjoy the expert tuition of Angela and Gary Swinkels on the club’s 5 courts. Both are NZ coaches at a national junior level. “People sometimes don’t realise we have a great Pro-shop here too. Racquets, balls, strings – you name it, we’ve got it” says Fletcher. He’s keen to let the community know that this facility is right on their doorstep and that it’s reasonably priced. It is a great way to get family and friends together; it’s equipped with a gym and the club sports an upstairs bar, open from 5.30pm weekdays for club members. Club memberships are available starting from only $30. For membership or visitor enquiries see their ad this page.

Double celebration The Onehunga High School’s Business School Hall of Fame Dinner held on the 22nd of June was not only a chance to recognise the successes of three former pupils, but also to celebrate Onehunga High Business School’s 10th Anniversary.

The focus of the evening was the induction into the Onehunga High School Business Hall of Fame of Peter Mayow (1960-62) Debbie Cavit (nee Howard; 1970-73) and Kath Watson (nee Hickey; 1973-76). A common feature of all three inductees was they all left school early something that is not recommended today. Peter left school on his 16th birthday before sitting School Certificate. He quickly found a job as a sales administrator with an Onehunga company, Rickstan Industries, that was a world leader in Formica products at the time; and run by prominent businessman Eric Sellars. In 1972 a new opportunity arose and Peter and moved to Bishman Electrical, which he and a partner eventually bought in 1978. In 1985 Fletcher Construction bought Bishman’s and offered Peter a position. Today he remains with Fletcher Building as the Auckland Operations Manager. Debbie Cavit left school after the 6th form and following her father’s advice went to secretarial school. “At that time it was considered a proper career for a young woman” says Debbie. She went through 17 different jobs in around a dozen years before a trip to Europe inspired her to set up her own business. At age 30 she set up Cavit and Co Interior Designs. Focusing on quality imported furniture and materials for both commercial and residential clients, the business has grown steadily since the late 1980's. Debbie now has two stores, one in Parnell and another in Arrowtown. She has also returned to OHS to tutor the business school students in personal presentation and interview techniques.

Debbie Cavit, Kath Watson, John Fitzgerald (Geust Speaker), Deidre Shea,

Kath Watson also left school after the 6th form and initially tried studying accountancy, but after one year decided it was not for her and took a clerical position at the Justice Department. A few years later she found herself working as an accounts clerk at the Colenso Advertising Agency, which she says changed her life. She soon moved to a job buying advertising space in magazines, newspapers, radio and TV. In the 90's Kath spent seven years as a sales manager for TV3, before returning to advertising. In 2004 she was part of a team that formed the OMD Advertising Agency. In 2007 she became CEO of OMD and today they are the country’s biggest agency, with 120 staff in Auckland and Wellington. After the inductions, OHS Principal, Deidre Shea, blew out the candles on a special birthday cake to celebrate the Business School’s 10th anniversary and made a special presentation to the school’s accountant and former chair of the Board of Trustees, Craig Weston, who played a key role in setting up the Business School and the Trust that supports it. Guest speaker for the night was John Fitzgerald of Glidepath New Zealand, a company specialising in the construction and operation of baggage handling systems in 160 airports all over the world.

Community Constable The importance of Property identification

Property crime continues to be the most common crime reported to Police accounting for around 70% of all reported crime. Unfortunately burglaries and thefts have the lowest rates of being solved with few clues being left and victims unable to identify offenders. For this reason it is even more necessary to increase awareness around the importance of accurately recording the serial numbers and description of property in order to increase the resolution rate for burglaries and thefts. Every year Police recover thousands of dollars worth of stolen property. Unfortunately many items cannot be returned because the owners did not record the serial numbers or mark the property so it could be identified as belonging to them. Worse still, the property may have to be left with the thief. People who can provide the serial numbers of stolen goods to police have a much greater chance of having items returned. Some insurance companies waive the no-claim excess for clients who provide serial number records when reporting a loss. There are various ways you can identify your property. These include engraving items with your driver’s licence number and keeping photographs of property that can’t be engraved. Police suggest keeping valuation certificates or purchase receipts and descriptions of your valuable items in a safe place for future reference. Operation SNAP (Serial Number Action Partnership) is an initiative of the NZ Police, aiming to prevent burglary and property offending and make it harder for criminals to sell stolen

Need a new accountant?

goods in New Zealand. This free initiative enables anyone to record serial numbers and other unique identifying details of their valuable goods. Details are securely stored in an electronic database from where they can be quickly and easily retrieved by owners to give to Police if property is lost or stolen. This assists recovery of stolen goods and identifying of burglars and thieves. For more information and to register your goods, visit www.SNAP.org.nz When you have engraved your valuable property in your home or recorded the serial numbers of items, Neighbourhood Support can provide you with a WARNING sticker to put on a window. This helps reduce the risk of burglary because criminals know they are more likely to get caught or traced if they handle and attempt to sell identifiable goods. Please contact me for further information on either operation SNAP or Neighbourhood Support. Donald.allan@police.govt.nz Ph (09) 622 8722

Peace in the park Friday the 8th of June was a significant day across Auckland City; Mayor Len Brown and members of Local Boards celebrated the 25th anniversary of being a ‘City for Peace.’ The title harks back to Auckland’s place at the forefront of 1985’s nuclear free movement.

In their bid to support NZ’s Nuclear Free status Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board members Brett Clark and Simon Randall were helped by young Enviro Leaders from Onehunga Primary School to plant 5 Kauri Trees at Jellicoe Park. “We were pleased to be asked to take part in the planting” said

Ripe for the picking Ever walked past a garden full of trees laden with fruit and thought what a crying shame it is to see that fruit fall and waste on the ground beneath? Perhaps you have such trees on your property but don’t know what on earth to do with the fruit they produce? In a time when we’re increasingly aware of the importance of returning to old fashioned and sustainable waste-not-want-not values, unwanted fruit is certainly an issue ripe for the picking. Enter Community Fruit Harvest. Mangere Bridge based coordinators Wendy and Brendon will make an appointment with you to assess what you would like them to do; take some of the fruit every week, every month, or all of it. Community Fruit Harvest is an initiative already running in other parts of Auckland and you couldn’t find a more deserving group of recipients. In various forms, the fruit is distributed to Mangere Budgeting Centre Food bank and the children at Dingwall Trust. The Trust helps children and young people up to 17 years of age, who are in need of care and protection away from home. But the Mangere Bridge faction is only just getting started. Firstly they need fruit. Then they need volunteer fruit pickers to register their interest to help harvest fruit. They would also love to hear from those with an aptitude for making jam, marmalade or preserves, who

Principal Mavis Moodie “and it tied in nicely with us being an Enviro School – there are two or three children here today to represent each class.” Mrs Moodie reminded all children at an assembly the following week that the Kauri “would be here for hundreds of years so look out for them when you are in the park and look after them.” In a press statement the board explained their dedication ‘to the promotion of nuclear free zones and a culture of peace based on social, economic and environmental justice, tolerance and non-violence.’ They acknowledged that peace is created through the thoughts, actions and policies of individuals, families, communities, whanau, hapu, iwi, businesses, schools, and local and central government.

Matariki @ Onehunga 2012

The month of celebrations began on Thursday 22nd June and runs to 21st July. Look out for activities that include instruction in poi making, weaving and the singing of waiata every Monday. These activities are accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. Come along and join in, learn a new skill while making new friends and gaining an introduction to Maori culture and customs. The “Through our Eyes” art exhibition will follow a Matariki theme of sharing; in this instance sharing stories through art. From the 16th to 20th July the art works will be on display in the foyer from 9am to 5.30pm daily. Some works will be for sale, while some are on loan just for the exhibition. If you are an artist who would like to display work which follows the general theme please contact Michelle at the Onehunga Community Centre, phone 634-9253.

A flurry of activity occupied the foyer of the Onehunga Community Centre and Library foyer as the stars of tomorrow learned more about Matariki.

Local children joined in with singing, stories and art work – learning more about the relevance to Maori of the appearance of this group of stars, while thoroughly enjoying themselves. Pupils from Onehunga Primary School finished the morning by attaching origami stars to a chart of Matariki, choosing bright colours to emphasise the constellation.

Greetings from the Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board! The Auckland Unitary Plan Auckland Council is currently developing New Zealand’s biggest single resource management plan, Auckland’s Unitary Plan. This will become Council’s key tool to manage development on land and water. For the next fifty years it will have a direct and significant impact on the shape of the city and the quality of Auckland’s built and natural environment.

The Unitary Plan will replace the seven legacy councils’ District Plans and the legacy Auckland Regional Council’s Air, Land, Water and Coastal Policies. It is these policies and plans that are currently used in resource consent processes. The Auckland Unitary Plan aims to implement the Auckland Plan (also known as the Spatial Plan). The Auckland Plan has identified Onehunga as a growth centre, and so this increased density will be achieved by allowing greater housing concentration in specific areas. This will be along the lines of the Maungakiekie Area Plan and the Onehunga Precinct Plan, which were adopted by the legacy Auckland City Council in 2010 after extensive community consultation led by the Maungakiekie Community Board. These plans can be found here: www.itsmybackyard.co.nz The community will have several opportunities to have their say on the vitally important Unitary Plan before it is agreed to. The first round of community engagement will take place later this year while the draft plan will be available for a formal

public consultation and written submissions process at the end of March 2013. We plan to run extensive interactive community information sessions throughout. The rules which implement the Corridor Management Policy will also be put into the Unitary Plan. We have been closely involved in advocating for a sensible balance between needing to have safety alongside high voltage overhead wires without limiting further development in our area. Late last year we hosted a joint meeting with the Penrose Business Association and businesses from the Onehunga industrial area to address their concerns directly to Transpower and Council officers working on the Unitary Plan and the Auckland Plan. We continue to be involved in these on-going discussions, and we’ll keep the community informed on further developments. Simon Randall is the Board’s lead on the Unitary Plan; please feel free to contact him if you want more information on these issues. Hoop dreams at Onehunga High School Two Onehunga High School basketball players are making their mark across the Tasman, representing New Zealand in age group representative squads.

Not in conjunction with any other offer

Raymond Penney competed in Oceania Championships at the end of June as part of the New Zealand Under 17 team. The year 12 student, who plays at point/shooting guard, is working hard in the hope that the team will be good enough to make the age group World Championships next year. Taking on State teams in Australia, Liam Tasi is hoping his skills as a small forward will be good enough to keep him in the selectors’ sights. Currently in Year 11, Liam has just toured in Australia with the New Zealand Under 16 squad. Both Raymond and Liam have set their sights on a future with the Tall Blacks, but with competition fierce they are both concentrating on doing the day to day ground work of training with the OHS team three times a week, in addition to working on personal fitness plans. Next term their school team will compete in the regional qualifiers for the National Basketball Championship, another chance to show their team work and skills in the pursuit of a world class sporting future.

A perfect cause Kat Thomas’s dedication to Onehunga YMCA youth programmes like Common Ground and Raise Up N Represent has put her in the spotlight on many occasions.

But last month she became known and loved by many New Zealanders when she won the ‘My Perfect Day’ competition, courtesy of TVNZ’s Breakfast and New World (Foodstuffs) supermarkets. Anyone watching would surely have shared her emotional response; she found out that 2500 people entered the online competition but only 10 finalists drew the 5000 votes and over half of them were cast for her. Speaking to Kat later about winning $10,000 cash for hers and hubbyto-be Brett’s dream wedding day, she said that while it was wonderful, it was proving a bit of a “double edged sword.” The tears of joy she felt at being able to turn an East Tamaki church and surrounding paddock into an all day, big family nuptials bash, were mixed with those of grief. Sadly, during a dangerous and painful labour late last year, Kat and Brett lost their almost full-term baby, Emily. Understandably she has been mostly absent from the local YMCA. she’s been doing plenty of soul-searching and her natural devotion to the education and betterment of children’s lives is as strong as ever. This might soon be evident to users of Onehunga and Papatoetoe libraries in the form of ‘Emily’s Corner.’ Kat’s idea is that a primaryschool age book collection will be founded with some of the money from the Perfect Day fund, and some from savings intended for Emily. To get Emily’s Corner started she will work with the Manukau branch of registered charity, Sands - Pregnancy, Baby and Infant Loss Support. Kat will be accepting new books, donations and good quality second-hand books for the corner. “It’s been very difficult since we lost Emily, but I knew her in my own way, and I want to always remember her in a really positive way. By setting up Emily’s Corner, her short life can help other children, and help me in the process. It is hoped that Sands Manukau and I can get one project set up and then look at starting others.” To register interest please email Katherine.c.thomas@gmail.com or admin@sandsmanukau.co.nz

Topical drama exercises local talent Local talent Adam Proctor is back with his latest production, Overdose - A Teenage Story. Dealing with a very topical subject, the drama follows the story of Zoe who is bullied by her elder sister Natalia. Adam, who is in Year 13 at Onehunga High School, began writing the show in 2011 and finished just in time for the start of rehearsals. He says the subject matter is close to the hearts and lives of many teenagers – he “knows a lot of people who have been bullied” – but he also thinks that most people don’t know what goes on in teenagers' lives. Popular music is a feature of all of Adam’s productions, and Overdose is no exception. Set to the songs of Kelly Clarkson and Christine Perry, among others, the cast from Onehunga High School and Green Bay will sing, dance and act their way through the performance. Adam himself will take a minor role, but the theatre is in his blood and he plans for 2-3 productions to be held at the Onehunga Community Centre in 2013 before he begins a performing arts degree at Toi Whakaari in 2014. For further information or to book tickets for the July 27th and 28th performances contact the APAC box office on info@apac. co.nz or phone Adam on 021 02526277.

Onehunga Paper Plus goes online

from this store – although we will be setting up a showcase once we’ve finished renovations here“ says Jitu. He also suspects best selling products like Inks and toners will be a popular online purchase. Points-based reward schemes like Flybuys and the stationers own ‘My Big Deal’ card apply both online and in store and can be used for both account and non-account holders. Jitu says that in today’s society it’s important to cater to the home office user, who will often prefer to shop online at night. He promises that all products bought online will stand up to the same standards of quality and service that the Paperplus shop franchises have built their reputation on. “You don’t have to go to the big boys to get the good deals!” he says.

“Hallelujah, Get Happy” Face to face or online, Robert, Anne and Jitu offer good old fashioned service.

Jitu Patel has owned Paperplus Onehunga for the past five years, and like any store owner he still favours the face to face contact of good old fashioned retail.

But he’s never the less pleased to be launching his long awaited online store. Jitu understands that a lot of his customers are time poor and the new online store will help alleviate time pressures whilst offering a comprehensive range of office supplies. Paper Plus shoppers now have the convenience of shopping in store, shopping online and picking up from the store, or shopping online and enjoying a home delivery. The latter option is free for purchases over $50. “The beauty of having the online facility is we can sell a fantastic range of office furniture that is stored in our all-branch warehouses. There’s such an extensive range we could never contemplate selling it

A community choir performing at St Peter’s Anglican Church will raise money to support grieving children in our community. The Show West Singers, a group of about 24 talented and enthusiastic musicians, will present “Hallelujah, Get Happy”, described as a concert of traditional and contemporary gospel music, with proceeds going to Seasons to assist with their valuable work. Seasons provides confidential support and counselling to children who are suffering from significant loss and grief. The non religious programme is run by the Anglican Church, and relies on donations and fundraising to achieve its goals. You can help by taking the opportunity to access some wonderful, uplifting entertainment in your local community. Tickets are available at the door, and the show begins at 4pm on Sunday 22nd July. To find out more about the work Seasons does with children, contact Jillian Alexander on 636-6368 or 021 02477002.

Samurai school flourishes New beginnings Onehunga is fortunate to have one of the few dedicated martial arts facilities in Auckland in its midst – the Samurai Karate School.

Andrew, Tavita and Kahu are dedicated and professional, and passionate about introducing the benefits of karate to anyone with the enthusiasm to learn. Karate is a sport which offers a wide range of benefits – increased fitness, confidence and Left to right: Tavita, Andrew and Kahu discipline. Chief instructor Andrew Kowanjko says it is great for “building character as commitment and practise are required” and that children in particular benefit from the repetition of exercises requiring gross motor skills. Centrally located at 128A Onehunga Mall, with a well lit carpark (in front of the YMCA) the purpose built Dojo offers classes for Peewee’s aged 4-7 years, Juniors aged 7-12 years and 13+ in the adult sessions. Complete beginners are very welcome; the emphasis is on fun and development in the early stages and becomes more focussed as participants become more competent and experienced, and training practises are safe and effective at all levels. Classes are held after school from 4.30 pm and will soon begin on Sundays also. Adult advanced classes are run by Andrew, a 5th Dan black belt who holds an international teaching licence (Shidoin) from Japan. The children’s classes are run by Tavita or Kahu. Tavita has just achieved his black belt – the school’s first – and is a full time instructor and qualified personal trainer who also runs his own Dojo in Remuera. Kahu has a qualification in Early Childhood development who won gold and silver medals at the Trans Tasman Cup tournament, and plans to attain his black belt in Melbourne later this year. For Onehunga Community News readers, the Samurai Karate School is offering a one month free trial. Just mention this article or their ad on page 17 when you enrol, and give karate a go – you’ll be thrilled with the results. Phone 0276941946 or go to www.shukokai.co.nz for more information.

The extension of SH20 through to Maiori Road brought upheaval to many, few more so than the Winstone Park Tennis Club.

From 1936 this friendly, family oriented organisation had enjoyed the environs of Mt Roskill, where courts and a tennis pavilion graced the lower slopes. However in 2005 the club had to relocate, and with the assistance of what was the Auckland City Council a new location was discovered and developed. Thanks to the efforts of a committed group of club volunteers the wonderful new facilities – five flood lit astro turf courts and the recently completed, architecturally designed pavilion – are now ready to be enjoyed by all. The new site for the club is 17 Akarana Ave, Mt Roskill – previously a bowling club. The beautiful new courts have been well utilised, and the members have made appreciative use of the building which used to house the male bowlers. But these rooms, which were originally part of an American hospital at Cornwall Park during WWII, while capacious, were old and tired. Winstone Park Tennis Club caters to players at all levels. Juniors (aged 6-15 years) play and are coached on Friday nights from 4pm. Other members have a variety of options depending on skill level and beginners are very welcome. A special deal for those new to the club is being offered – for $200 you can join now and your membership will not expire until August 2013. On the 8th July at 3.30pm the grand opening of the new, purpose built club rooms will take place with special guest and local MP Phil Goff officiating. This event is anticipated with great excitement and is open to all. Come along at 1.30 to play, or from 3pm to mix and mingle. For more information go to www.winstoneparktennis.co.nz or ring Jenny Glass on 625-5553.

Let’s talk about Bling... with Maire and Christine

Here at Onehunga Jewellers, we are still supporting local kiwi designers, and are thrilled to announce the newest arrival to our family of kiwi jewellery designers, Boh Runga. Born and bred in Christchurch, Boh is not just creative behind a microphone, but also at the jeweller’s bench. She has designed stunning Sterling Silver jewellery, dabbling in the jewellery trade since 2007. Most iconic is her Birdland range, featuring native New Zealand birdlife, including Tui, Kiwi and the gorgeous feathers of the Karearea bird. For the customers with more adventurous taste, the quirky ‘Weapons of Mass Devotion’ collection is based on being head over heels in love and features Cupids Arrow earrings, a love gun and bullets! There is also the super-cute ‘Small but Perfectly Formed’ collection; mini jewellery with a maximum statement. Boh Runga’s jewellery not only provides some stunning pieces for Kiwi girls, but is likely to remind the female traveller of their time spent in Godzone. It’s also an ideal range to send to Whanau overseas to entice them home. Remember, we have amazing lay-by terms on jewellery, watches and repairs. Simply pay 20% deposit and take your time paying the remainder - up to three months if you need it. We’re happy to help and are one of the last stores to wipe clear any lay-by or interest charges. Our policy is customers just pay off the ticket price; yes, this also applies to sale items. To sweeten every deal a little more we are going to be giving away cupcakes in July. Why? Maire has suddenly developed a very sweet tooth...but it’s not her fault. It’s the baby! As if petite little cakes weren’t treat enough for every visitor in store, we are giving away a $100 voucher to the visitor who guesses the birth weight of Maire’s little treasure. Best of luck!

Honesty in Onehunga Two recent incidents which have come to our attention confirm that the world is still full of caring and considerate people who value honesty. In straightened times, it is great to know that our community is holding strong to values some consider “old fashioned”. We’d like to share these stories with you.

The first is from Hayley Nessia. Hayley says: “I lost my wallet while I was running around trying to view the transit of Venus. I looked in vain for the rest of the night, driving around and around to find it, but it was gone. I was pretty upset. The next day, after I’d cancelled by bank cards, I received a phone call from the Onehunga Police Station informing me that some kind soul had

handed my wallet in. I was so relieved and happy, it just made my day. I collected my wallet later on but the person had refused to leave their name or details so I would just like to thank you, whoever you are, you saved me a let of stress and hassle and I am so grateful. Good one Onehunga." Meanwhile on the 11th July a local business woman found a sum of money on a shop floor in Onehunga. She handed it to the shop owner, but it did not belong to them and no-one appeared to claim the money so it was returned to the finder. She then informed the Onehunga Business Association, who advised her to hand the money to the Police Station. If you believe this money might belong to you, please contact the OBA on 636-8535 or, the Onehunga Police with the details of your loss.

Maggie's back on the block Lifelong learning The one-time 4 Square at 39 Oranga Ave has undergone a transformation again, but this time the cafe is back in the hands of building owner Linda “Maggie” Sutton, and she has big plans for the place.

To re-open, orange walls turned white overnight and kitsch furniture, wall ducks, potted flowers and long wooden tables came out of storage for the early June opening. Taking over after a years leave setting up Margaret Rose boutique next door, Maggie promises that rounds of scones and other home baked treats, fabulous coffee, Wild Wheat bread and Soup of the Day will be staples on the winter menu. After only 3 weeks open she says people have been popping in to say they’re glad she’s back. “I didn’t think people liked me that much” she joked after one local woman came in to give her a hug for opening the doors. “We’re definitely upping the ante....so watch this space! It’s still a small menu policy and we’ll be using seasonal ingredients but we’ve got some surprises like a cheese-maker on the staff. We’ll encourage some experimentation but keep things simple and fresh – a leaf out of Gordon Ramsey’s book.” Anyone wondering how the well-loved Margaret Rose boutique next door will fare while Maggie is up to her elbows in flour needn’t worry; plans are afoot to re-open, making the stylish little pocket of town into “much more than just a boutique!” For enquires ph 579-8552 / 580-0117 or email Maggie@maggies.co.nz

The theory that learning should be a lifelong experience can be tested in a surprising number of ways at the Adult Learning Centre, based in Onehunga High School.

The Pleasant Street hub of community education is still one of 23 lead national adult education facilities, saved from an original pool of 212 in the 2010 budget cuts, and they’ve just rolled out a terrific variety of Term 3 courses. Whether you’ve decided to overcome your paralysing fear of public speaking, fancy a dabble in the share market, or want your Marine VHF Operators Qualification, there is a wide range of both student and government funded courses you can learn in just a few weeks without breaking the bank. “We’re still running a very comprehensive programme here” says Director Linda Melrose “and what people find is that one course leads to another. It requires some confidence to come ‘back into education’ as an adult - we recognise that - but once people are here they see that a lot of courses are relevant to them.” She says the ‘lifelong learners’ are such a mixture of people – recently divorced, beneficiaries, retirees, migrants and more. Certain programmes specifically address literacy and numeracy for adults whose lack of education causes restraints to living successfully in a Western Society or competing in today’s job market. This might mean a recent migrant attends a heavily government funded Level 1 class in English for just $66. It might mean someone confident in English wants to improve workplace communication by taking a Business English course for 5 weeks at $65. This Centre is also a life saver for young adults wanting to improve their NCEA levels; if at first you don’t succeed, try and try again by enrolling in the NCEA academy or the NCEA Summer School. Either of these can offer the right credits for several jobs and paths of study. Contact the centre on 636-9060 or visit www.adultlearn.co.nz for a full complement of programmes for term 3.

Angelic photos on the Mall Long time local and Onehunga mum of two, Amy Bamforth, is following her passion for photography at her Onehunga Mall based business, Angel Productions. Into her 6th month working from the Bray Building studio, Amy is steadily building a clientele from far and wide.

Amy has only been working in photography for two years but her fresh style and love of artistry has proven valuable in building a new business – one that offers a surprisingly competitive price list for a main street studio. Introductory prices are in place until the end of July. Passers-by can expect some well-branded signage in July so there will be no doubt where to find them, but Amy asks readers to call first as consultations are by appointment only.

The variety of work commissioned is seemingly endless: weddings, new born babies, toddlers, family portraits, school balls and corporate events to name a few. But Amy has put together some comprehensive packages to make choices easier for clients. She has some very happy, repeat customers already – including ex-Shortland Street actress, Kimberley Crossman. Amy says Kimberley’s shots have singlehandedly increased the younger focused ‘Glamour Package’ sign ups dramatically. “I can do photo shoots at the studio or come to your home or another location. Sometimes I’ll think something’s going to go easily with a quiet little girl for instance, and it takes longer; other times I’ll have a family of boisterous young boys to shoot and we get everything wrapped up within 20 minutes. Every shoot is different and what I focus on is getting people to feel comfortable and at ease so we get some beautiful shots. I love all my work, but capturing images of children is probably one of my favourites. ”

Many owners for Maungakiekie June 22 saw Len Brown lay a wreath at the summit of One Tree Hill, in remembrance of the death of Sir John Logan Campbell exactly 100 years before.

In 1901 the one-time honorary Mayor of Auckland gifted about 172 hectares of park and farmland to the people, cared for by the Cornwall Park Trust. Maungakiekie, or One Tree Hill Domain, itself covers about 48 hectares and ownership stayed with the Crown, until now. Though Campbell generously passed the land to Aucklanders, the Trust documents note that the Wai o Hua tribe occupied the land as early as the 1700’s. This was thought to be the head pa of Chief Kiwi Tamaki. Ironically, soon ownership of the mountain area will be handed back

to Iwi in a collective deed seen by the Crown as ‘critical to settling the historical claims in the Auckland region.’ Maungakiekie will then be co-governed by 13 Iwi boasting the significant Tamaki name. The deed of settlement runs to 14 other volcanoes and 4 islands. The Tamaki Collective, the Crown and Auckland Council delegates will make up the governing statutory board and Council will retain financial control. Ben Thomas, Press Secretary for Minister of the Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations, Chris Finlayson, assures that the public will see little outward change. “The settlement will have no effect on public access or activity. Public access is guaranteed, as it is currently. There are currently certain restrictions on some of the mountains – for example, buses were banned by the Auckland Council from the crater of Mt Eden last year, for conservation reasons. OWNSIZING? OR A chance to upsize your

New price! Few remaining McElroy apartments from $395,000 Nolene Leech in her new two bedroom retirement apartment at Selwyn Heights Village

Nolene Leech has just recently moved into her new two bedroom apartment at Selwyn Heights Village. Attracted by the great value of her new home (just $460k including oven, dishdrawer, fridge, heat pump, washing machine, dryer and an undercover lock-up garage), Nolene was also impressed by the cafe, spa, wellness centre and entertainment complex all on site. Moving out of her four bedroom home of 37 years was a big step for Nolene, but the rewards far outweigh the upheaval. Nolene’s new life is just about to begin. If you’re ready to upsize your lifestyle, call us on 0800 4 SELWYN (0800 473 5996) for a tour of Selwyn Heights Village, 42 Herd Rd, Hillsborough, or visit www.selwyncare.org.nz for details.

The Selwyn Foundation

Selwyn Village is part of The Selwyn Foundation, a faith-based, not-for-profit charitable trust. All occupation licences for units at the village will be secured by a first-ranking encumbrance over the village land in favour of the Statutory Supervisor.

User-pays rubbish for Maungakiekie It’s inevitable that what we throw away and how we throw it away has to be tightened and reduced as time goes on; this was supported in submissions for Auckland’s Draft Annual Plan.

But the cost of Auckland Council’s much debated draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan has been criticised as just being too expensive. The goal is to reduce landfill by 30% by 2018 through the introduction of a user-pays kerbside rubbish system that still collects increasing revenue in the ratepayer quarterly bill. Householders will choose the size of bin they use and the frequency of collection. The capacity of the bin, not the weight, will dictate the cost they pay per collection. User-pays wheelie rubbish bins will range from 60 litres to 240 litres in urban areas and rates funded recycling bins will come in 140 litre to 360 litre sizes. The range of recyclables accepted will increase. A rates-funded organic waste collection will begin in urban areas. The biennial inorganic collection for households will continue region-wide. It’s understood ratepayers will eventually share an extra $60m bill from 2015 as the mixed-model comes into effect; though rates will increase by 4.9% next year it won’t be enough to satisfy the grand ‘most liveable city’ plans. Councillor for Orakei, Cameron Brewer, criticised the need for such expensive change. However Maungakiekie-Tamaki Councillor, Richard Northey, says he stands by the scheme. “I was part of the WMMP working group chaired by Noelene Raffles. There are still aspects of it that we need to fine tune, like the organic kerbside collection frequency etc. But I’m pretty happy with it.” Deputy Mayor, Councillor Penny Hulse, says ratepayers and renters needn’t panic though. “Major changes to kerbside collections will not start until 2015, as current contracts expire. A lot of communication and community education will happen...particularly in Manukau and central Auckland where disposer-pays for rubbish will be new but where targeted rates for rubbish collection will reduce.”

Sharing

A couple was celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary. At the party, everybody wanted to know how they managed to stay married so long in this day and age. The husband responded “When we were first married, we came to an agreement to share. I would make all the major decisions, and my wife would make all the minor decisions.” “But do you know what I just realised?” “In 60 years of marriage I don’t think we have never needed to make a major decision.”

Foreshore on the backburner It has been almost a year since the design for the Onehunga seaside park was unveiled to excited locals at a public open day at the Manukau Cruising Club.

At time of going to print however, Onehunga Community News learnt from Council that one of the appellants, Transpower, had agreed on a resolve. But contention still surrounds the challenges put forward by Te Akitai Waiohua Taua Trust. They oppose the coastal reclamation on the grounds that their cultural and legal concerns are yet to be addressed, but state in legal documentation sent to submitters that they agree ‘to participate in mediation or other alternative dispute resolution of the proceedings.’
