Onehunga took control of the game early in the second half when hooker Meki Tongia scored soon after the restart to stretch the lead to seven. However the St Andrew’s side were not ready to surrender and 10 minutes from fulltime they managed to break free of Onehunga’s stifling pack to launch their backs on a rare foray into OHS territory. Finding space on the left St Andrew’s scored in the corner, closing the score to 13-11. A second try from OHS’s Jordan Fonokalafi’s sealed an 18-11 victory.

Victory in the New Zealand Co-educational Schools Rugby Championship on 9th September is without doubt the Onehunga High School's First XV’s greatest ever result and their first major trophy. They are now officially the best Co-educational Rugby School in New Zealand.

OHS first had to win the right to represent the ‘Blues Super 15 Region’ in the top four play-offs for the Auckland area. This saw a home game against Takapuna Grammar on 1st September, which they won convincingly 51-15. They then travelled to Rotorua for the semi-final on Friday the 7th against Cambridge High which represented the “Chiefs Region”. This was a very tight affair, OHS winning 18-12 to make it into the Sunday final against Christchurch’s St Andrew’s College. OHS had a nervous start in the televised final. In heavy rain and, despite playing into a strong wind, St Andrew’s capitalised on

Principal Deidre Shea, who had travelled to the match with a small group of supporters, was delighted with the win, paying tribute to the boys for the way they had represented the school. She also paid special tribute to the work of Coach Steve Frear and Manager Maree Forsyth, who had “achieved so much with very few resources.” It also proved to be the crowning glory in an excellent week for the school’s sports teams, after the Girl’s First XI won the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Kathy Seaward tournament, and the Boy’s Basketball qualified for the National Championships in Nelson.

No more false starts for foreshore Local leaders, Auckland Council Officers and local politicians were thrilled at the news that the Te Akitai Waiohua Waka Taua Trust had withdrawn its appeal in relation to the Onehunga coastal reclamation and restoration project.

It would otherwise have seen a lengthy term in the Environment Court, pushing the dream of a family-friendly beach for Onehunga further away from a community that has waited over 30 years to see the promised mitigation become a reality. Auckland Council’s Manager of Parks and Assets, Colin Field, acknowledged it had been a long journey but said that everyone involved could take heart now, knowing it would be “a legacy project for the Manukau Harbour.” The $28 million costing is still correct but the Local Board takes responsibility, or part of it, not Auckland Council. ‘The Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board is contributing $10 million, the New Zealand Transport Agency $18 million, confirmed by a spokesperson for the Fulton Hogan Consortium. It seals the promise that Local Boards, region wide, will have far more

influence over sizeable local projects under the Auckland Council framework. “Technically we’ve had financial responsibility for the foreshore and have been working with the Auckland Council officers who report to us since the Boards were appointed, but as construction on the foreshore develops, our decision making role will With appeals now revoked this rocky foreshore will become more visible” says be transformed into family friendly beaches. Sam's month in review The last few weeks have been very busy. Last month we saw the opening of new facilities at the Elevate Christian Disability Trust in Te Papapa. The trust has provided disabled services in the region for over 30 years and the new facilities are a welcome addition to an effective local organisation. I also attended the opening of the SPCA op shop in Onehunga. This store will provide valuable funding to an iconic New Zealand charity which enables the safety, welfare and shelter of animals. We have also had numerous school functions which I have enjoyed attending. These included the Royal Oak Intermediate expressive arts show, the Marcellin College fair and the Royal Oak Primary art auction. I pay special mention to Hannah and Charlie whose special gingerbread man art piece I am now proud to own! I also attended the Fathers’ Day Jamboree at the Community Centre which was fun for both the kids and their parents. In my visits to local organisations, I attended a Penrose Business Association meeting on transport and infrastructure. The area is the home of many businesses and the transport needs of both employees and residents are critical. The general feedback was positive. Issues include the need for a link between State Highway 1 and State Highway 20, the availability of public transport, the need for consultation on future projects as well as the financial sustainability of major infrastructure needs. I also visited the local Girl Guides, Brownies and St John cadet program. It is comforting to see established community organisations helping young people

develop skills, values and knowledge through experiential handson learning environments. Around the region, I was pleased to be a witness to the Ngā Mana Whenua o Tāmaki Makaurau Collective Deed. This is an agreement between the Crown and local iwi and hapū over shared interests in the Auckland area. These interests include volcanic cones and islands. The Deed vests ownership in the 14 volcanic cones in the Collective while ensuring they are co-governed by a body made up of representatives of Auckland Council, the Collective and the Crown. There will be no changes to existing public access and use rights for the people of Auckland while third party rights over infrastructure, buildings and leases will be maintained. Importantly, the Deed paves the way for the future planting of a tree on One Tree Hill (Maungakiekie) so watch this space! I helped launch with Mayor Len Brown and Phil O’Reilly of Business NZ, the Auckland Council’s Economic Development Strategy. The strategy complements the Government’s own business growth agenda by focusing on innovation, export driven organisations and expanding skills in the local workforce. It is clear that central government, local government, businesses and communities need to work closely to create more jobs and opportunities and make Auckland the world’s most liveable city. In parliament we have introduced the second stage of our welfare reforms. We are taking an active work-based approach. We are streamlining welfare so that there are only 3 main categories. Jobseeker Support for those actively seeking and available for work, Sole Parent Support for sole parents with children under 14 years of age and Supported Living Payment for people significantly restricted by sickness, injury or disability. We are tightening criteria on welfare by taking away benefits for people with outstanding arrest warrants, and placing expectations on beneficiaries of being drug-free and available for work. We are also putting social obligations on parents to enrol their children with a general practitioner, and their attending school and complete crucial Well Child checks. J Williams dances for YMCA World Challenge On 13th October the Onehunga YMCA will be taking part in a worldwide basketball styled challenge to set a record for the most people ‘shooting baskets’ simultaneously. The event is expected to make the Guinness Book of Records; YMCA’s from over 70 countries have registered to take part, hoping to mobilise over 5 million people worldwide. ‘2012 Hoop Springs Eternal’ is all being done in the name of empowering youth, says their Onehunga Centre Manager Jo Chapman.

But after the on court action there is a very rare treat in store for spectators and participants. Also in the name of supporting youth, international Mangere born R&B star J Williams and his dancers will perform 9 singles and 2 dance medleys over 45 minutes. “This is the equivalent of a whole show, but it’s worth it to get behind young people and promote fitness and expression.” J was first linked with the organisation through Prestige dance colleague Josh Martin, himself a youth leader at the Jordan YMCA. “All monies raised will go toward Raise up n Represent for youth” says Jo. “They have achieved some major milestones through their organising of and participation in so many events and projects since 2006. The big day will see a morning of family activities geared for kids like obstacle courses and in the afternoon we’ll have the games of up to 10 people per team. They don’t necessarily have to score,

just shoot at the basket. It’s the number of balls on hoop that is the challenge.” People should try to register teams, or express an interest in playing in a team, by the 10th October. Registration is $60 per team of players, and a koha is expected from families, children and spectators. Pre-sale tickets for the J Williams performance are $10. Community spirit at the old library On Sunday 16th September more than 30 hardworking individuals turned out at Onehunga’s Library Cafe to put in place the first stage of The Library Cafe Community Gardens. A fortnight later the group - consisting of locals and volunteers from Tableside Trust and Urban Pantry finished the planting.

Once the produce has matured gardeners and locals who have put their hands up to maintain the garden will be able to take some of it home. The impetus for the project is not so much about the end result, as bringing the community together in the name of a healthy garden-to-table education for all ages, says owner Debbie Leaver. “It is no coincidence we have chosen to put it in the grounds of the original Onehunga Library. It has always been our vision to continue to educate and inspire the community - in line with the original intention for the building kindly donated by Andrew Carnegie 100 years ago.” Emily Harris of Urban Pantry, founder of the city-focused edible garden organisation, said it was increasingly important for urban children to see food growing and understand the process. Denise Krum of Tableside Trust agreed

that some children only associate an apple with the supermarket and have never seen one growing on a tree. Both organisations are partnering with Debbie in the garden project. Local resident Ian McInnes felt it was a great link for the community to meet each other face to face. “I work for World Vision and visit villages around the world where people are often impoverished. But they are rich in their sense of community; they work together on projects like this to achieve sustainable agriculture for everyone’s good. I’m looking forward to getting to know other people in the community through working on this garden.”

CAB Onehunga one of busiest around Onehunga’s branch of the Citizens Advice Bureau invited community stakeholders to a lively and well attended September drinks & nibbles function, so they could offer attendees the most recent Managers Report. The figures collected for 1st July 2011 to 30th June 2012 show their work in the community is in higher demand than that of 10 other branches in the region.

The 16, 873 enquiries they received show an increase of 2,608 or 15% from the previous year. Interestingly the 30-39 year age group proved to access CAB services the most, with 40-49 years coming second. Despite the digital world we increasingly live in, 84% of clients were ‘walk-ins’ with only 1% using a web-based interface to make contact. As Christmas draws near, CAB notes on seasonal pressures is important to observe: ‘....increase in February around enquiries about Family Court, separation and relationship breakdown issues, budgeting and counselling.’ They believe this is due to more time spent with family, under difficult or constrained holiday budgets. Food parcel requests also rise at this time. Manager Claire Donaldson summed up what it is about the CAB that makes it such a valuable organisation: ‘...it is when a client arrives in a distressed state, spends time with one of our interviewers, and leaves in a more calm and confident state, because they have received the information and options that they need to get on with their life.’

The actors, including Claire VanBeek, Francis Mountjoy and Robert Tripe (most recently playing Chris Warner’s lawyer on TV2’s Shortand St) will perform 12 shows in all. They say the appeal is aimed at 3-7yrs and 25yrs plus. “We’ll have plenty of jokes for adults too!” says Francis. Shopping good for the animals On its first day of business, the Onehunga Mall SPCA opportunity shop had people queuing outside the door before it even opened, says Retail Operations Manager Moana McDowell.

We’ve just returned from Sydney, thrilled to report what is hot in the world of jewellery, starting with bright bold colours for the summer.

“I was amazed at the number of people supporting us on the day and also leading up to the opening. We had nearby business people popping in to see if they could help; the Onehunga Business Association was absolutely amazing and passers would stop in while we were building, wanting to know when they could start spending.” Many building materials were secured for next to nothing from Trade Me and shopfitters gave generous discounts on their labour too. CEO Christine Kalin says that the opening of the Onehunga branch was a “no brainer”; she knew of the community minded spirit in the area. Raising money through the second-hand model has been successful in Howick, Glen Innes and Browns Bay and the stores represent a new way of managing funds for the organisation overall. It costs $7 million to keep SPCA’s Auckland region functioning and Christine views the shops as strategic, predictable income streams feeding into the operational purse. “This would mean that bequests and donations that we often have to use to keep the doors open can consistently feed into the Trust account to grow interest and provide capital. We need capital to fund projects like satellite SPCA sites which would make us more accessible to the public region-wide. Now initiatives like op shops, amongst others we’re working on, give us that regular, predictable funding. Thanks to our wonderful volunteers and people who donate goods, we can operate op shops affordably, and in turn do more for the animals.”

Volume 3 coming together Kids that were successful in the August auditions for the YMCA Raise Up N Represent Volume 3 music programme are now on the home stretch to the early November performances.

This is the programme’s third year in a row. However, 2012 has seen a changed format; the 16 Mt Albert and 18 Onehunga youngsters are practicing together, even though they are developing different shows. Kalib Strickland, aka Leuitenant Funk, and youth music mentor Nina McSweeney are leading them through with a well structured schedule, says Kat Thomas. The Onehunga-based kids are thrilled to have Kat, their well loved youth leader, back on board for a few weeks and she’s finding the experience equally enjoyable. “I was trying to lock up the Community Centre one night recently and they were all so excited that it was a real challenge to get them to leave! When I eventually closed the doors they stood out on the pavement and kept singing. It was so uplifting.” Kat explains that the performers work in groups, and some of the kids are in several so they can work on multiple songs. “What’s fantastic is they learn that if they show up and put the work in they will generate something, something good will come of their efforts. And this is a valuable lesson on so many levels.”

Remembering the Orpheus On February 7th 1863 the HMS Orpheus was wrecked on the Manukau bar, with the loss of approximately 189 lives. A variety of commemorations are being planned for the 150th anniversary of the disaster, covering many communities around the Manukau Harbour.

From Whatipu and Huia to South Head local historians and enthusiasts are devising memorial services, informative lectures and discussions, visits to relevant sites â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even the odd sea shanty sing along. There will be opportunities for everyone with an interest to learn more about this part of New Zealandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s maritime history, and how it affected the development of Auckland. This sombre event resonated around the world and still stirs memories here, coming as it did at a time when the New Zealand land wars were imminent and tensions were starting to run high. Local Maori were among the earliest rescuers on the scene, although true to the times little is made of this in the official record of the day. Despite the best efforts of historians there are still gaps in our knowledge of the events on this tragic day â&#x20AC;&#x201C; one of the reasons why there is still dispute as to the official death record. The organisers of all the events to commemorate the sinking of HMS Orpheus are very interested to hear from anyone descended from a survivor of the disaster, or from descendants of rescuers or witnesses or anyone else involved in the drama. Community Police team settles in If you think you have seen more police than usual on the streets on Onehunga, you are correct. Last month we published a photo of the new Community Policing team which is based in the Onehunga Police Station; this month we can tell you more of what they mean to our community. The seven member team will work predominantly in Onehunga, while also being called to other areas in the Eastern Policing District as the need arises.

The team is one of the results of a new initiative in policing which aims to focus more on community involvement. This means settling in and getting to know the area, spending considerable time talking to people, being visible and proactive. Sergeant Rhys Smith is in charge, and he describes a typical day’s workload as “bail checks of high profile offenders, and chasing up breaches of parole, foot patrols, road policing, liaison with schools and community groups, interacting with other police departments, dealing with hotspot crime”… the list goes on. Major areas of focus are contacting and building connections with previous offenders, in an attempt to redirect their activities, and working on long term solutions to the causes of crime. Sergeant Smith is at pains to reassure us that our ever popular Community Constable Don Allan is still working in the area, and has much the same role as he had previously. Loyalty and courage

Education is not an issue only relevant to the young. It is a gift relevant to everyone at any age, and a matter of importance on mental and physical levels to millions of supporters worldwide. This is the global message that staff at Onehunga High School’s Adult Learning Centre want to bring home to Aucklanders, especially those living in nearby communities.

On the evening of Wednesday 17th October, Onehunga High School Year 13 students, Kezia Latif and Esther Pekepo, will sacrifice their lovely locks in the name of supporting peers with cancer. From 4.30pm to 6.30pm they’ll succumb to a pair of hair clippers in the school hall, hoping that by shaving their heads they will raise at least $2000 to give to kids cancer charity CanTeen.

We’re lucky to have the Pleasant Street site on our doorstep; it is one of just 23 leading national adult education facilities left out of 212, after the 2010 budget cuts. A wide range of both student and government funded courses are available, from languages to antique collecting, to golf, welding and yoga; there are almost 50 courses to choose from. Director Linda Melrose encourages people to take the plunge, saying that it “requires some confidence to come back into education as an adult but once people are here they see that a lot of courses are relevant to them.” There is a plethora of information available on adult learningnewspaper articles, books, websites and blogs. Guru Nancy Merz Nordstrom says at www.selfgrowth.com that learning is a vital ingredient for anyone in their “after-50” years. “Lifelong learning is like a health club for your brain. And an active mind can stimulate physical activity and keep your spirits high. Also, we all have innate natural abilities. Some of which might not be readily apparent. Once we are no longer working full time, we have the opportunity to fully explore and develop these abilities.” The Adult Learning Centre is also hugely beneficial to the other end of the age-spectrum: young adults wanting to improve their NCEA levels by taking numeracy and literacy courses in the NCEA Summer School in January 2013 to gain the right credits for many jobs and paths of study. The girls are no strangers to cancer. Esther was diagnosed with Panniculitis-like T-cell lymphoma, which adversely affects the immune system. Before Kezia was born, one of her brothers passed away aged 9, from Leukemia. “We have both been largely affected by cancer” she says. “The passing of my brother left my family changed forever. Shaving our heads also marks one year since Esther was diagnosed so we want to celebrate that journey and make it a tribute to those Supporting each other: Esther Pekepo (left) and Kezia Latif battling with treatment now, and to those who lost that battle in the past, leaving us with only memories.” OHS Principal, Deirdre Shea, applauded the girls saying they had put a huge amount of effort into the Shave for a Cure event, taking inspiration from fund-raising that staff had previously been involved in. “For Esther, this story is intensely personal. She is a brave young woman whose positive approach to life is awe inspiring. In Kezia, Esther has an outstanding friend who is a wonderful support. Both girls have strongly held moral positions and personify our school motto ‘loyalty and courage.’” Kezia would love to hear from anyone in the community who wants to donate or sponsor them. Busy role suits new Librarian The new face of community liaison at the Onehunga Library belongs to Danielle McQuiod. Danielle was born in Onehunga but lived here only briefly before her family moved to the country.

On leaving school she worked in retail for some years, studied music at University and then began her career as a librarian at Mt Roskill. Next stop was a trip to the UK where she settled in Edinburgh for a year and managed a charity shop. But the call of family ties was too strong, and the opportunity to return to library work in Mt Roskill brought her home. Danielle’s new role at Onehunga Library is officially “Librarian” – but this word encompasses a huge variety of tasks. In a masterful understatement, Danielle describes her role simply as being “very varied” – she develops community relations, organises events, is responsible for the children’s section of the library and coordinates cultural celebrations. Travelling to schools and kindergartens to spread the word of the value of libraries and their free availability to all is another aspect of this busy job. When she is not at work, Danielle enjoys fostering the family ties that brought her back to New Zealand. She also reads a lot – helpful when she is asked for advice from library patrons – and is studying part time for a Masters in Information Studies.

A decent cuppa Members of Onehunga’s Senior Citizens group, SCENE, recently travelled to the Zealong Tea Plantation to learn more about how the Kiwi classic – a decent cup of tea – is created. The organic tea is grown in New Zealand from plants originally sourced from Taiwan. No pesticides are used and the tea produced has a unique flavour. The group was taken through a tea toasting ceremony where they learned more about how to create and enjoy the perfect cup of tea. SCENE coordinator Shirley Ruttley says “our trip to the plantation was a great experience for all. We were shown a DVD on how the plantation started out and it was interesting to hear that their tea is being exported to a few countries overseas.” The group then indulged in a beautifully presented High Tea of sandwiches and cakes presented on lovely tiered cake stands before beginning the trip back to Auckland. This active group enjoys monthly outings and entertainment, plus a weekly Friday gathering for cards, Scrabble and socialising. Putting on the glitz For the first time in over 20 years, Hillsborough Primary School will be holding its inaugural Spring Fair on 27 October, and it’s set to deliver plenty of talent and flair.

Set high on a hill overlooking stunning Manukau Harbour, this picturesque school is small in size but boasts plenty of talent amongst its pupils. A unique part of the fair will be a student-led talent quest, which organisers say is not only an opportunity for the children to get involved and give back to their school but to bring together the many communities that connect the school. This is particularly important for new immigrant families and families new to the area who lack much-needed support networks. The pupils from Year 1 to 6 will showcase a display of cultural performances from a folk dance called Jibidi and a Bollywood extravagance, to dancing and kids singing in sign language. They will be joined by special guests, Sid and Scrat, from the recent kid’s movie, Ice Age 4. The fair, which runs from 9am to 2pm (rain or shine), will feature all the traditional stalls you can expect at a fair, plus gourmet food, candy floss, face painting, lucky dips, raffles, pony rides and all-weather entertainment for the kids, big and small. There is also a live auction from 12pm to 1pm with thousands of dollars of products and some ‘money can’t buy’ goodies up for grabs. Festival of One Act Plays at Dolphin The annual Dolphin One Act Play Festival will run this year from the 11th – 13th October. The Festival aim is to introduce new directors and actors into the theatre environment and give them a start on the theatre journey. In 2012 three brand new directors will debut over the weekend.

Alistair Hayward will direct 'A Dog's Life' by Pam Valentine. Alistair is normally on stage and regular theatre goers will have seen him perform in two shows at Dolphin this year: 'Ladies Day' and 'Perfect Wedding'. Carl Drake is directing 'Nothing' by Australian playwright Mark Langham. Carl has gathered a great cast for this lovely "slice of life" black comedy. Dolphin Vice President Annie Whittaker says “it's great to see a new director trying an Australian play, as not much Australian material is performed in New Zealand”. Stephen Lunt has written "A Midsummer's Mess" and will direct his work for Dolphin. This play is a modern take on Shakespeare's 'A Midsummer Night's Dream' and is a great opportunity for young energetic actors. All performers play multiple characters and puppets are used to back up the cast when more performers are needed on stage. Annie says “All of the plays are great fun and we are thrilled to have such an interesting and varied programme this year”. Meanwhile the huge redevelopment of the Dolphin Theatre is nearly completed. Almost every part of the existing buildings has been moved, expanded, improved or revamped, and the final result will be a community facility which is much more user friendly. as usual for the theatre throughout, and that the builders have been fabulous at working as best they can around the demands this has created. Funding for the project has come from a number of sources, including the Dolphin’s own carefully budgeted savings. Sherrill would like to express sincere thanks to all those who have donated or sponsored the work, including the ASB Trust, Lotteries Commission, Lions Club and Sky City. Donations of cash and goods would still be most welcome however. Office furniture and equipment are needed for the smooth operation of the business, while wardrobe racking and a washing machine and dryer for the laundry would help with caring for all those costumes. The old Hall has a new deck facing out to the park, allowing for some interesting summer activities or community events. With work due to be completed during October, the Dolphin is looking forward to celebrating the end of its 50th year in style.

Royal Oak dentist on a mission

Police save story time

After a week of volunteering to do 39 fillings and 54 extractions in less than ideal conditions in the Fijian heat, dentist Ross Pellow is not remotely fatigued.

In fact after racing back home to catch up on his Royal Oak Dental Centre work, he feels better than ever. Ross attributes this zeal to the feel good factor one experiences doing good charitable works, such as he’s just completed for the Friends of Fiji Heart Foundation Charitable Trust.

An emergency call out for the Onehunga Fire Station caused some downcast little faces at the Onehunga Library on 21st September.

“What was so inspiring about this was a team of 75 health professionals came together carrying 7 tonnes of equipment, on a pro-bono basis, to perform open heart surgery on Fijiians who otherwise would have a very limited life expectancy. The majority of them have heart valves that have been damaged as a result of rheumatic fever. As the only dentist, my job was to ensure full oral health for these heart patients, because if there is any infection in the mouth it can easily travel to the new heart valve following surgery with very serious consequences ” says Ross. The FOFHF Trust was founded in 2006 by former Fiji citizens now living in New Zealand. Chairman Vinod Singh estimates they have provided in excess of five million dollars worth of free medical treatment to the people of Fiji. Ross reports that in 2007 the group performed 17 open heart surgeries and fitted 15 pacemakers. Five years later they’ve just completed 28 heart operations and fitted over 20 pacemakers. “We sacrifice some of our time to head over and do this for many reasons, including the importance of helping your neighbour.”

A special story time for preschoolers was based on “Superheroes in Onehunga” – with a fire crew as the centre piece of the show. However a major fire in Mt Eden, which was attended by 21 crews from the area, understandably took priority on the day. Some quick thinking, and a call to the Onehunga Police Station, resulted in an alternative which put smiles back on the faces of the youngsters. A police car with lights and sirens distracted the crowd and soon compensated for any disappointment as the officers showed off their car and chatted about life in the force. Grateful parents joined relieved library staff in thanking the police for taking the time to make the children’s day.

Community Constable A time for change It is time to change people's awareness around vehicle crime. Property crime accounts for as much as 70% of all crime in New Zealand and the greatest proportion of property crime is vehicle crime.

Time after time Police are forever taking reports from people who leave visible property in their motor vehicles. And I'm not only just talking about the GPS left on the windscreen, or mobile phone plugged into their auxiliary to charge, but other items such as bags and clothing. I have even taken a report from a person who had a window smashed and their lunch taken. So you can see, if you leave anything visible inside your vehicle you dramatically increase the chances of being a victim of vehicle crime. The peak times for vehicle crime are: from 3pm to 8am where vehicles are often left parked on the streets while owners are at home. Prime targets are tradesmen's vehicles which often contain a lot of valuable power tools, or just vehicles with visible property inside. People who break in to vehicles are mostly opportunists looking for easy and tempting opportunities. If you leave property inside your vehicle you are dramatically increasing the risk being targeted. The most affordable deterrent to prevent vehicle crime is a simple steering lock mechanism and the removal of any property from inside your vehicle. Even leave your glove box open to show that nothing is inside. Taking these steps will dramatically reduce your chances of being targeted. Remember! If you leave any visible property your chances of being targeted increase dramatically. As of the 1st of October 2012 Onehunga Community Patrols will commence in Onehunga. Their aim will be to conduct mobile patrols in areas that the Police have identified as having a problem with crime. Diwali lights up Onehunga At the time of going to print the Onehunga Library and Onehunga Business Association had their heads together planning another marvellous Diwali celebration for 2012. Final details can be sought from both organisations in October, ready for a Saturday 27th event.

Shanti Niwas in Spring Street, Onehunga, will also be organising celebrations at a later date; this year the official ‘Festival of Lights’ falls mid November. Traditionally, Diwali is celebrated for five days, and takes place at the new moon on 15th day of the Hindu month of Kartik (or Karthika.) However it is customary for organisations to celebrate with the public on a nominated date so check with all the above groups to make the most of this colourful, vibrant occasion. Diwali is recognised as the most ancient and significant of many Indian festivals and it literally means ‘a row of lamps.’ This provides a bright antidote to the beginning of winter in that part of the world, where the auspicious day is considered the darkest of the year. Families therefore light oil lamps and candles, firecrackers and fireworks.

Post Grads get good local start In July the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment said they’d offer 70 New Zealand businesses funding to employ a postgraduate student for the first six months of a given contract, up to a maximum of $30,000 plus GST.

Students will gain valuable experience and training while demonstrating their ability to enhance R&D. They will also contribute by applying their skills and knowledge,” said MP Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga. He reported that funding of $2.1 million from Vote Science and Innovation would allow Compac Sorting Equipment Ltd, Rakon Ltd, Tiger Turf Limited, Tru-Test Limited to employ graduate students to undertake innovative research and development work. “We need research and innovation to help grow our economy and increase productivity. This programme will improve the career opportunities of our postgraduates while investing in the future,” said Mr Lotu-Iiga.

Elderly of all cultures celebrate

CREATING OPPORTUNITIES... FOR GRACEFUL AGEING

This year the 6th October International Day of the Older Person will be a happily multi-cultural affair at Shanti Niwas Charitable Trust in Onehunga. This is the goal of Nilima Vankat, Project Manager at the Trust, who is pleased to have support from many stakeholders in the community, including MP Sam Lotu-Iiga, the Onehunga Community Centre and the Onehunga Business Association. “While the community centre has put a lot of work into the Evergreen Exhibition in recent years, we felt that we weren’t doing enough together. This year we really want the community to celebrate our older people together, regardless of family culture, through dance, song, information and food stalls. We hope to see lots of families there, including grandchildren” says Nilima. The trained social worker says so often the older people in the community are forgotten about and can become very lonely and isolated. Shanti Niwas was the first Indian/Asian organisation of its kind in Auckland 17 years ago; they saw a need for interaction and social services such as case work, including elder abuse. They combat aged-isolation by opening Tuesday to Friday with a range of programmes that see people coming from all over Auckland, often in excess of 50 a day. Transport can be provided regularly. School days revisited On the 3rd September 1945, little Valerie Langton set off on a journey to the brave new world of school. She followed in the footsteps of three of her grandparents, and took with her a little embroidered hand towel made by her mother from a piece of a worn out bath towel – typical of the economies routinely practised in the post war years. Sixty seven years later Valerie, for nearly fifty of those years she’s been Mrs Val Morris, brought that same towel back to her old primary school to share with other past pupils who had gathered for the annual school reunion. The reunion took a slightly different form this year, as instead of the customary entertainment provided by the current pupils of Onehunga Primary School there was a presentation of the new memoire entitled “Memories” which captures reminiscences of the area by those who have a long connection with Onehunga. Val, Audrey Ritchie and Bridget Graham all spoke of their contributions to the book, which was described in September’s edition of the Onehunga Community News. After the formalities everyone enjoyed a shared lunch and an opportunity to catch up with old friends. The turn out this year was exceptionally good, with over 90 ex-pupils attending. The major raffle prize was won by Mr Leon Armstrong, one of three pupils from the 1920’s present for the occasion.

The questions kids posed to the bridge itself, imagining it to be alive, included: Have you ever been tempted to kick anyone off you? Does the water wear you away? Do you have any memorable moments? Then pupils had to draw pictures of the new design. According to them, the new bridge has potential to include: food stalls, a kid’s play area, Lego Land type water features, a bouncy walkway, a hydro-slide, a BMX track and a helipad, all manifested in the shape of a huge fish. “We want to gain greater insight into how children and families use the old bridge, what is important to them about it and how they would like to use it in the future” says NZTA’s Senior Communication Advisor Lisa Inder. The team was delighted to give away an Auckland Harbour Bridge Climb for each school participating in the workshop, as well as books for the library. Donning bright construction hats and vests the leading consultation team drew ideas from the minds of some of the most imaginative and important people in the community last month; 9-11 year olds who know and love ‘The Bridge’ at Onehunga Primary, Mangere Bridge School and Waterlea Primary.

Onehunga Community News caught up with the project at Onehunga Primary as Structural Engineer Brad Yates took 12 little “thinkers” through a presentation of bridges, even encouraging them on important aspects of his job. “Do you like maths?” he enthused. A resounding “Naaahh” came from the audience. Pam Hook from HookED, who sometimes works with the NZTA, opened the kid’s minds to the wildest bridge possibilities. “We’re going to suck all the good ideas out of your brains!” she teased,

The inaugural Mangere Bridge Trolley Derby will be run on 18th November 2012. Participants will design, build and then race a trolley down the hill on Ambury Road in Mangere Bridge. The Derby is open to everyone - little kids, big kids - even adults! If you can build it, you can race it. Kids: go and pillage an old pram, grab the wheels off the lawnmower, figure out how brakes work and start building. Get a parent, uncle, neighbour or grandparent to help you out if you need one, and remember a great paint job will make you go faster! Adults; you can build a cart and race it yourself, or get a corporate team together and build and race it for the glory of work place relations. The organisers will be providing build clinics with experts on hand to help you out, so even if you have never built anything before they will help you sort out your Phillips screwdriver from your Allen key. All this effort will culminate in a family oriented community day to celebrate the completion of the project with a day full of good spirited competition. There will be races to see who's built the fastest soapbox racer, a show & shine, and some great prizes from Style-Meister. Library Café celebrates centennial The genteel hubbub that usually accompanies morning coffee at Onehunga’s Library Café – a background noise of happy chatter, busy toddlers and china chinking – was arrested briefly on Thursday 13th September. All eyes and ears were turned to the door, where Bob Clark, a Kaumatua from local hapu Akitai Waiohua Tainui began a karakia to bless the century old building and its inhabitants, past and present. Library Café & Function Venue owner Debbie Leaver wanted to celebrate the anniversary of the historic building in a meaningful way, acknowledging and honouring its historic and current uses. Guests were invited to witness the blessing, which was preceded by a brief explanation in English by Marsh Herewini. Mr Clark made reference to local landmarks, historic events and all those who have passed through the building over the years, following a procession through the building. The significance of the land in shaping people, the foresight and generosity of patrons such as Mr Carnegie in gifting libraries to communities, the ongoing value of education, the vital need for healthy and sustainable food sources – all these strands were drawn to together by the speakers as the group assembled in the foyer. A final prayer concluded the ceremony. Following this, guests were invited to enjoy all that is good about the Library Café in its current incarnation – great food, interesting company and a relaxed ambience.

Bequest brings sound of music Down on the farm A generous bequest from a parishioner has resulted in the recent acquisition and installation of a fine organ for the Catholic Church of the Assumption in Onehunga. Sourced from Johannus in the Netherlands, the WM-47, which for those in the know has 2 manuals and 32 pedals, “has such an amazing pallet of sounds to enable the organist to bring on any number of combinations” says, regular organist Ray Tanner.

The church has never before possessed a real organ, having made do with a series of keyboards of inferior quality for over 130 years. Months of deliberation and negotiation, shipping from Europe and then the installation and tuning of the instrument were completed on August 15th, 2012. The whole process was greatly assisted by Ralph Cullen, salesman, musician and representative of Johannus in New Zealand. He oversaw the entire process, and tuned the new organ to ensure that it is pitch perfect in the new surroundings. Ray, who has been playing the organ since his teens, began in the traditional way by learning keyboard skills on the piano. His hope is that the availability of such a fine instrument will inspire young musicians to take up the challenge of the organ, producing the beautiful music that is due to such a fine gift. A memorial plaque supplies a simple statement of the donor, past parishioner Mary Brown.
