Lines on the land - how Corridor Management Policy might affect you Owners of residential or commercial property beware. If you have Transpower transmission lines running through your property then you may not have the freedom to develop the asset that you thought you had. Under the Government’s National Policy Statement on Electricity Transmission Councils are required to introduce a Corridor Management Policy (CMP) into their district plans. These plans will bring the already existing NZ Electrical Code of Practice (NZECP34:2001) to the fore when Councils are considering work being carried out under or near transmission lines. This code of practice has existed in its current form for over 10 years now, but according to Transpower this is not well understood. This all sounds very straightforward, except that reports suggest that as the code of practice is adopted the existing corridors are being revised – outwards. Corridor widths up to 32 metres (either side of the lines) are being discussed, whereas the maximum under the current code of practice is 22.5m under a 220kv line with pylons 375m apart and only 11m where the pylons are 125m apart. Where the capacity of the lines is

reduced the distances are also reduced, down to 8.5m for a line which carries less than 33kv. Transpower spokeswoman Rebecca Wilson points out that the corridors for Auckland have yet to be finally determined in discussions between Transpower and the Council. What is clear is that people affected by the current restrictions know very little about them, and that no-one yet has a clear idea on what the final CMP will look like in Auckland. When Amanda Kinzett, Town Manager for the Onehunga Business Association, discovered the plans late last year and called a meeting of locals who were potentially affected, the policy was to be implemented early this year. The Council has now put the decision back to April 2013. Local MP Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga advises that he has been in contact with the Rendering Minister of Energy and Resources and the Minister of the Environment, as well as Transpower and local groups such as TOES and the OBA, in an attempt to ensure that the plans do not have an adverse effect on the development of our community. For example, the Council’s own plans for Princes Street could be impacted by this policy, while Transpower’s current challenge to the Council’s consent for the redevelopment of the foreshore is based on the current electrical code of practice. Another issue is that of compensation. Transpower states, and MP Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga agrees, that as the NZ Electrical Code of Practice already exists and there are already restrictions around what activities can take place in these areas there will be no need for compensation for affected property owners. This may be so, but what if the corridors are expanded? As the width of the corridors is still under discussion it is unsettling that compensation is not even under discussion We will be following developments on this issue over the coming months but in the meantime we would strongly advise people with potentially affected properties to ensure that they are aware of their current rights and obligations, and learn all you can about how these will be affected by any changes. Auckland Council, Transpower, your local councillor and politicians should all be able to give you information regarding your specific situation.

Matariki @ Onehunga 2012 The foyer of the Onehunga Community Centre and Library will be abuzz with activities every Monday during the month of Matariki (June 21st to July 21st).

The traditional welcome of the constellation known to the Maori as Matariki, and variously elsewhere as the Pleiades or Seven Sisters, was acknowledged by the flying of kites. Kites symbolise the connection between heaven and earth, and beautiful intricate Manu Tangata kites representing birds and people were constructed of flax, grasses, feathers and shells. Very few original examples survive but the Community Centre would like to reconnect with this tradition by asking anyone with knowledge of kite making in any tradition, who would like to share their skills, to contact Michelle. A series of Matariki Mane is planned at the centre, and activities will include instruction in poi making, weaving and the singing of waiata. These are all inclusive activities – the more the merrier - and they are accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds. Come along and join in, learn a new skill while making new friends and gaining an introduction to Maori culture and customs. The Onehunga Library will join in the theme with a special story time on 22nd June from 10.30am to 11.30am. Everyone is invited to listen to legends and join in with singing and activities. Particularly aimed at the 0-5 age group, these are family friendly activities and everyone is invited. The “Through our Eyes” art exhibition will follow a Matariki theme of sharing; in this instance sharing stories through art. From the 16th to 20th July the art works will be on display in the foyer from 9am to 5.30pm daily. Some works will be for sale, while some are on loan just for the exhibition. If you are an artist who

would like to display work which follows the general theme please contact Michelle. Phone 634-9253 or, co.ord@onehungacentre.org.nz

Make a date for the Santa Parade Although Onehunga's 3rd Santa Parade is in the early planning stages, a date has been set for the occasion. Saturday 24th November is the big day, beginning with a parade down Onehunga Mall at 11.30 am followed by a mini fair from 12-2pm. Make a note of the day and time in your diary, and start to consider how you might like to be involved.

Schools, churches, businesses and community groups are encouraged to devise imaginative floats which celebrate both the season and the nature of the organisation they represent. To find out more, contact the Onehunga Business Associations Events Manager, Briar Millar. Phone 636-8535 or events@onehunga.net.nz

A teenager is...

WOMEN: Woman 1: Oh! You got a haircut! That’s so cute!

- A person who can’t remember to walk the dog but never forgets a phone number. - A weight watcher who goes on a diet by giving up candy bars before breakfast. - A youngster who receives their allowance on Monday, spends it on Tuesday, and borrows it from her best friend on Wednesday. - Someone who can hear their favourite singer 3 blocks away but not their mother calling from the next room. - A whiz that can operate the latest computer without a lesson but can’t make a bed. - A student who spends 12 minutes studying history and 12 hours studying for their driver’s license. - A connoisseur of 2 kinds of fine music–loud and very loud. - An enthusiast who has the energy to bike for miles but is usually too tired to dry the dishes. - A young woman who loves the cat and tolerates the brother. - A romantic who never falls in love more than once a week. - A budding beauty that never smiles until her braces come off. - A boy who can sleep till noon on any Saturday he suspects the lawn needs mowing. - An original thinker who is positive that their mother was never a teenager.

Woman 2: Do you think so? I wasn’t sure when she gave me the mirror. I mean, you don’t think it’s too fluffy looking? Woman 1: No, it’s perfect. I’d love to get my hair cut like that, but I think my face is too wide. I’m pretty much stuck with this stuff I think. Woman 2: Are you serious? I think your face is adorable. And you could easily get one of those layer cuts - that would look so cute I think. I was actually going to do that except that I was afraid it would accent my long neck. Woman 1: Oh - that’s funny! I would love to have your neck! Anything to take attention away from these football player shoulders of mine. Woman 2: Are you kidding? I know girls that would love to have your shoulders. Everything drapes so well on you. I mean, look at my arms, see how short they are? If I had your shoulders I could get clothes to fit me so much easier. MEN: Man 1: Haircut? Man 2: Yeah.

June 2012 ~ Onehunga Community News |

Sam's month in review This month we suffered a terrible tragedy in our community with the sad deaths of Sosaia and Tio Passi in a boating accident on the Manukau Harbour.

It has certainly touched the hearts of people around the country and re-emphasised the need for caution and awareness in our waterways. There were numerous heroes involved in the recovery operation and like many from our community I went down to the Harbour to comfort and support the family and friends in the days following the tragedy. I know our thoughts, prayers and sympathies continue to be with the family as they go through this difficult period. This month also saw the delivery of Budget 2012 and it reaffirms the Government’s commitment to return to budget surplus in 2014/15. The budget also forecasts economic growth to average about 3% a year over the next 4 years, with 154,000 new jobs created – on top of the 60,000 new jobs created in the past 2 years. In education, our focus is on increasing student achievement and we will be investing a further $110.9 million into early childhood education (“ECE”) so that we continue our drive to have 98% of all school entrants participate in ECE. There will also be an increase of $82.6 million to operations grants, giving schools the flexibility to provide resources based on the needs of their learners and $33 million in operational funding to accelerate achievement for priority learners. Tertiary education institutions also receive $37.7 million to provide 3,000 more youth guarantee places while there is a significant boost for youth mental health with social workers in schools ($8.7 million) and a Social Media Innovations Fund ($2 million). Health services received the most significant boost

Peseta Sam lotu-iiga MP FOR MaUnGaKieKie

Clinic hours available at ellerslie, Mount Wellington, Oranga and Panmure

with $33 million set aside to improve cancer services, $68 million for more elective operations, scans and tests, and $20.5 million to strengthen maternity services and boost Plunketline and WellChild services. Over $133 million has been tagged to improve the service and access for people with disabilities while $40 million will go toward increasing dementia services. We are supporting affordable housing with a $104 million fund to support non-government housing providers where 1 of these projects has already been approved in the Royal Oak area. The Government’s Warm Up New Zealand insulation program will also be extended to ensure an extra 41,000 homes will be warmer, healthier and drier. As stated in my May update, I have been trying to meet with the appellants to the Environment Court in relation to the decision of the Auckland Council to grant resource consents for redevelopment works on the Onehunga Foreshore Restoration. I am still pursuing a meeting with Te Akitai Waiohua iwi but have met with Minister of Energy and Resources Hon. Phil Heatley and the CEO of Transpower Limited, Patrick Strange. There are a few concerns Transpower need to resolve with the Council about the transmission lines that run through the site. However, I am advised they are working constructively with the Council and expect that these issues can be resolved quickly and without the need for a hearing. There have also been concerns by local residents at the application of the National Policy Statement on Electricity Transmission (“NPSET”) under the Corridor Management Plan (CMP) allowing for a restricted corridor along transmission lines. I have been working closely with the Ministers of Environment and Energy, Transpower and local resident groups including TOES and the Onehunga Business Association to get a better understanding on this issue and how we can better protect the interests of our community. My understanding is that these will need to be incorporated into the Auckland Council’s Spatial Plan and be consulted on to ensure that our community are not unduly affected by any proposed changes. In the electorate I had the privilege to take part in the ANZAC Day parade which is growing annually. I enjoyed the OBA’s Mothers’ Day promotion at the Onehunga Community Centre involving children and Dads making Mothers’ Day gifts. I also attended local sports events including the Warriors win over the Broncos, Onehunga High School’s 1st XV loss to Auckland Grammar School as well as Te Papapa-Mt Wellington’s loss to local rivals Manukau. Looking forward, I will be sending out my 2nd electorate wide survey for Maungakiekie constituents. I hope you take the time out to express your views and opinions on the issues that matter to you as well as giving me feedback on how I can improve our service to you as your local MP. Generous support It is with enormous gratitude that the Onehunga Foodbank extends its thanks to the community which has so generously responded to their pleas for help. Last month we reported that the Foodbank’s stocks were low, and within days of the Onehunga Community News hitting the streets many compassionate locals called in to the Citizens Advice Bureau with bags of food to be distributed to needy families. A member of Mercury Energy’s Steve Lang, Raewyn Cornford, Yogesh Chand from Mercury staff was alerted Energy deliver much needed supplies to the to the Foodbank's Onehunga Foodbank. requirement for supplies while attending the monthly ODCOSS meeting. Food donation stations were set up in Mercury’s offices in Greenlane and Albert Street, and staff contributions were matched in value by the business. This resulted in a huge quantity of foodstuffs

being delivered to the Foodbank, enough to ease the strain for many families in urgent need of assistance. This fine example of altruism, and the generous assistance of so many locals, has eased the situation for a while. However winter is just beginning, the economic outlook is still constrained and food prices are still high. So remember the needy the next time you shop, and if you can afford to, put in an extra non-perishable item for the Foodbank.

Under 16s dive in for free Famiies local to Onehunga’s Jellicoe Pools will no doubt be pleased that ‘Under 16s’ now get free entry into all Auckland Council funded pools. The decision was just one of a range of stipulations for the Auckland Long Term Plan; however Mayor Len Brown views the ruling as “bitter-sweet.”

He says the original proposal put forward was for universal free access to swimming pools across the region, as is currently the case for the six former Manukau City pools. “After 17 years of debating this throughout my political career I remain assured that this is, and always has been, about the kids.” During the debate the Mayor also touched on the importance of ‘learn to swim’ programmes and his desire to bring free swimming lessons to all our pools. At the time of going to print neither staff at Onehunga CLM, nor CEO Craig Carter were available to comment on the likelihood of free lessons in the future. For more information contact CLM or Auckland Council.

Preparing to celebrate 90 years In May, Commodore Bob Roper spent considerable time indulging maritime memories with a shiny red, white and blue booklet; a commemoration of 75 years for the Manukau Cruising Club. It was created in 1997 and is rich with photos and anecdotes of clubfilled days gone by. Now MCC have nominated November 2012 to mark their 90th birthday. To this end, the weekend of the 2 - 4 November will welcome in a new season of boating, fishing and other water sports with a Friday meet and greet, a Saturday formal dinner and a Sunday Boat Race. The Herb Morgan sponsored 75th Jubilee Cup will be presented as a commemorative trophy to the winner. Bob hopes to see the iconic clubhouse packed to the rafters. In the early 90’s MCC contacted the Auckland University School of Architecture and the result was the million dollar clubhouse you see today. The open, circular style still supports a social function venue that is widely utilised today by members as well as the public. The panoramic backdrop of the Manukau Harbour and the ambiance of the club are always a big draw card, says Bob. The celebration will remind members and potential members about the club’s long held mandate: to ‘...promote and advance the interests of boat owners to develop and encourage a high standard

Dolphin in need of donations Digging around among displaced scenery and props at the Dolphin Theatre, John Kelleher produces an artifact which has graced the walls since 1962.

It is the board that recognises contributions of local companies and individuals who were the original sponsors of the theatre, names of whom some are still familiar today. The board will hang in pride of place once the extensions are completed, hopefully complemented by a second board acknowledging those who have supported this latest upgrade. The Dolphin Theatre is currently in the midst of huge building works and renovations. There are builders, tools and materials everywhere competing for space with the necessary accoutrements of a theatre company which is valiantly living the adage “the show must go on”. As indeed it must. Everyone who has ever had builders in knows that the experience is invariably more expensive than expected – little extras like new piles soon eat up contingency dollars – so the Dolphin will keep entertaining theatre goers while the work continues. Fortunately the nature of the extensions, similar in effect to a new shell around half the existing buildings, don’t impact on the auditorium or the lobby so it is business as usual for productions. If you or your business would like to contribute to the upgrade of the Dolphin Theatre, there are many ways you can assist. Cash donations are most useful, as they can be put where the need is greatest. However the new kitchen, laundry, office and bathrooms all need fitting out, so if anyone is able to donate good quality new fittings then Sherrill and John Kelleher would be delighted to hear from you. Contact 636-4966 (please leave a message) or jksa@xtra.co.nz

Donations valued at $5,000 and above will be added to the new sponsorship board in thanks. Patrons are encouraged also to continue supporting the Dolphin through the upgrade by attending performances which begin with Noel Cowards “Private Lives”, due to open on the 9th June.

CH Barker is back You might believe the large frosted windows and calming blues of Simplicity Funerals at the Royal Oak roundabout to be the mark of a new business; this clean, fresh approach to the funeral profession certainly looks modern.

But you would only be partly right. Simplicity Funerals has in fact evolved from the original Onehunga business of CH Barker, founded over 100 years ago. Back then they were based on Onehunga Mall. CH Barker moved out of Onehunga when the site was developed about ten years ago, and they have been looking for the right local spot ever since. Brian Stott, now managing and directing funerals from the Royal Oak site, says it’s great to have the CH Barker Simplicity Funerals brand anchored in the Onehunga locale again. “First and foremost Simplicity Funerals are about two things: respect and dignity. What we wanted to do was include more affordable, simple funerals in our service offerings based on these cornerstones. It doesn’t matter what nationality, religion or culture you come from- we can tailor a funeral that reflects the increasing concern about cost of living today without compromising respect and service.” Brian has nearly 40 years experience in the funeral profession and explains that many people don’t know what to do or expect when arranging a funeral until it needs to be done. That’s perfectly understandable. However he suggests that people of all ages call in and warm up on their 21st July Open Day so they might learn more about services or simply mix with some new members of the community. “The idea of the open day is to remove some of the apprehension people feel about funeral arrangements, educate them a little, and offer them some peace of mind.” For more information call 0800 222 155.

Are you giving your watch the time of day? The girls here at Onehunga Jewellers are loopy for watches.

Between the four of us we own 36! So we are on a mission for every Onehunga-ite to take pride in what they wear on their wrist and put on their mantelpiece, by offering some truly beautiful timepieces. The humble watch is an unsung hero; just look back to the 15th century. If you wanted to know the time while you were out and about, you had to lug around a portable clock, and the most practical one had to be wound twice a day! Even the most practical one wasn’t fitted with a minute hand until 1680. So when you look down at the watch you’re wearing today be grateful! If you are still not convinced that the watch is worth celebrating, think about the fact that the average person looks at their watch 71 times a day, and ‘time’ is the most often used noun in the entire English language. But of course there is the distinct possibility that you may need to create a love affair with a new watch. This is definitely the month to go head over heels... we are slashing the prices of nearly every watch in store - with up to 70% off for this month only. This is the first and last watch sale for 2012 - so don’t miss out! We have made massive reductions on Tissot, G-Shock, Fossil, Citizen, Olympic and Swatch time pieces. We’re also pleased to announce the introduction of CERTINA Luxury watches, direct from Switzerland. You can pocket one of these for UP TO HALF PRICE! We can’t wait to find that special watch for your wrist soon. See you instore! Onehunga Jewellers 214 The Mall, Onehunga, P: 636 4760 E: onehungajewellers@me.com W: onehungajewellers.co.nz

Youth connections

by Alexandra Ventura, AUT journalism student Auckland Council is giving the Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board $150,000 to provide unemployed youths with the skills to get jobs they want.

Youth Connections is an Auckland-wide initiative aiming to lower the number of school leavers on the unemployment benefit. According to the Department of Labour, 25,700 young people in Auckland aren’t in education, work or training. Deputy Mayor of Auckland, Penny Hulse, said in a media release that it is crucial young people have their next step mapped out when they leave school. “We don’t want a generation of Aucklanders lost to unemployment.” The Youth Connections project in Auckland is based on principles from a similar programme in Otorohanga that provided training for specific job opportunities. The Waikato town now has an almost zero rate youth unemployment. The project aims to work with young people to make sure they have a plan for their future and is tailored for the specific needs of each participating local board area. Maungakiekie-Tāmaki Local Board chair, Leila Boyle, said because our area focuses on thriving businesses and good jobs it is essential to stress the importance of

Believe your eyes

employment to teenagers early on. “We have a much younger population than most of the region and we are committed to ensuring they all have a pathway to employment that is right for them.” Maungakiekie-Tāmaki is the second largest employment hub, after the CBD, and generates 13 per cent of the region’s annual GDP. Boyle says it will increase as the population grows. “It is vital that our young people have the skills and experience to do the jobs they want”. An evaluation and research project will monitor the initiative's success and hopes are that it will lower the number of young people not in education, employment and training. The Youth Connections initiative will be implemented over two years across Auckland.

Encouraging sales figures The BNZ Marketview report is based on spending using BNZ credit and EFTPOS cards - about 20% of the New Zealand market for such spending. These figures can be broken down in quite extensive detail, providing information on spending trends across the country. For the first quarter of 2012 sales figures in Onehunga were up 4.9% on the same period last year – encouraging in particular compared with Auckland wide figures of an increase of just 0.3%. There was a 22.5% increase in sales to international visitors, which indicates that more tourists are coming to town. 32% of spending comes from Onehunga local areas, 29% from other central suburbs a further 28.9% from the wider Auckland region.

On firm ground at last The Onehunga Soccer and Sports Club is celebrating being back on their No. 1 Pitch at Waikaraka Park after years of playing in little more than a mud bath. After a $250,000 spend to fix the drainage, the club’s premiers now have a proper sand based pitch to show off their skills.

Local board members Bridget Graham, Brett Clark, Simon Randall, Chris Makoare and Alan Verrall were invited on to the pitch before the match on the 26th of May against Eastern Suburbs by Club Chairman Nick Johnson, and publically thanked. Brett Clark, who is also a member of the Waikaraka Combined Sports Trust, then took a ceremonial ‘first penalty’ to open the new pitch. Funding for the redevelopment came from the Local Board’s CAPEX (Capital Expenditure) Fund and Brett Clark said it is a demonstration of the ability the new Local Boards have to make a positive impact in their communities. Since the reorganisation of Auckland City in 2010 the Local Boards have been given not only greater control over local community assets like parks, libraries and community centres, but also the funding to allow them to respond to the needs of these facilities. He was keen to point out Waikaraka Park was only the first of many similar projects for the Maungakiekie-Tamaki ward. Onehunga Sports Chairman Nick Johnson was very keen to thank

the Board and singled out Brett Clark for his efforts as well as club stalwart Tony Porter for his work on behalf of the club. Nick described it as a “major step forward” for the club and a notable day in their history. Drainage work began in February hampering the end of the Onehunga Cricket Association's season and the start of the soccer season. Onehunga Sports had to play away games for almost the entire first half of the season. However the pay off is that all but one match for rest of the season will now be played at home, starting with the match against Eastern suburbs which ended 1-1. • 100% Secure premises • 24 hr RV/Outdoor access • Clean dry units from 2.5 cu metres to 100 cu metres • FREE loan van and trailer to assist you in your initial move in* *conditions apply.

Greetings from the Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board! Your Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board is responsible for local decision-making; we set budgets and service levels for local facilities including our pools, recreation centres, libraries, sports fields and parks. Most of these funding allocations are tied up in existing contracts from legacy Auckland City Council budgets but we do have some discretionary funds including small local improvement projects (SLIPs).

SLIPs are small projects that improve our local surroundings. Projects we have funded recently include anti-graffiti murals, playground improvements, planting fruit trees and development plans for our sports fields and parks. SLIPs can also be in the form of a grant but these can be for no more than 49% of the total value of the project. SLIPs can be suggested by individuals or community groups in our area. There is a handy online proposal form at www.aucklandcity. govt.nz/MTLB (click on “Proposals for small local improvement projects”) or you can contact our office from 8.30am to 5pm weekdays to have a chat about your idea and get a form sent to you via email or post. Our office is located at 7-13 Pilkington Road, beside the Panmure Library (phone 09 570 3840 or email Maungakiekie.TamakiBoard@AucklandCouncil.govt.nz). We used some of our SLIPs budget this year to rectify the drainage issues with Waikaraka Park’s number one field. We spent $10,000 on investigation and planning work and $250,000 on the field itself which includes sand carpeting and significant drainage infrastructure. Saturday 26 May saw Onehunga Soccer & Sports Club play their first home game of the 2012 season on the newly

The Onehunga Business Associations Icon Security Guard, Satia Sami, is proving a very important component in the reduction of crime in Onehunga. Satia divides her time between patrolling the streets talking to business owners and becoming familiar with the rhythms of daily life in the area and keeping a close eye on the security cameras which monitor activity. In recent weeks Satia has been able to supply police with photos of people behaving suspiciously in what turned out to be a stolen vehicle, report drug use on our streets and the supply of alcohol to minors. If you see suspicious activity in our CBD which you would like to have investigated, please contact the OBA office on 636-8535 or for more serious incidents contact the police directly on 634-1064 or 111 for emergencies. (Please be aware that due to privacy reasons, footage from security cameras can only be provided to the police. Please report any incidents to them for investigation.) Businesses in Onehunga should also take care to avoid being taken in by the latest scams. Recent activity around Auckland includes fake $50 notes being tendered (go to http://is.qd/NZbanknotes to check the safety features you should recognise), false complaints about dodgy food or service being leveled at junior staff members in the hope of a “refund” and a man who has successfully managed to talk several businesses out of $100 notes by offering one in payment for goods and then confusing staff when he asks for it to be returned.

Winter warmers

Winter is here, the temperature is approaching single digits too often for comfort and the autumn leaves have gone from artistic landscape features to sodden, slippery underfoot hazards.

Your home should be your haven at this time of year, a warm environment waiting to welcome you home from a long day at work, an escape for your family and friends from the cold and wet of the season. It is at this time of year that many of us notice that little “odd job” we’ve been putting off because of time or cost or indecision – the leak in the roof, the draught from the door, the dangerous socket which is also the most convenient one for the heater. Fortunately help is at hand. Many of the businesses who support the Onehunga Community News are able to help you sort out these outstanding projects, saving you time and potentially money as well.

For example, getting Brierley Plumbing to wrap your hot water cylinder will reduce your power bill as the energy used to heat the water is no longer lost through the sides of the cylinder. Leaking gutters can be a nightmare at this time of year, water streaming down the sides of the house causing muddy mini floods, while winter winds can cause havoc on a previously water tight roof. RightWay Roofing is just the business you need to sort these problems out. Outstanding electrical issues can be resolved by ringing Matt from MDC Electrical, while Allied Glass can fix that broken window and keep your sanctuary weather tight. If you are a dedicated DIY enthusiast, then head down the road to Grove Mitre 10 and spend a happy hour or two in handyman heaven, wandering the well stocked aisles choosing just the right tools and equipment. There are also many ways you can keep the cost of your power bill down to help you through the winter, while keeping warm and healthy. Mercury Energy suggests cutting down on the length of showers, and turning your thermostat down to 60 degrees Celcius. You could also switch to cold water wash cycles on your clothes washer, and Helen Amituana’i, Mercury Energy’s Community Relations Manager, says “we can also offer you GLOBUG, a pre-pay electricity service that helps you take control of your electricity spend”.

Onehunga High School celebrates 10th Anniversary of the Business School Preparations are well underway for the Onehunga High School’s biennial Hall of Fame Dinner. But this one marks an extra special occasion. It’s a celebration of their 10th Anniversary and will be held at Ellerslie Convention Centre on the evening of Friday 22 June. The purpose of the affair is to recognise former Onehunga High School students who went on to marked success in the business world, whether by applying their skills to another’s business or the creation of their own. “This year we’re thrilled to have some really interesting guests” says Linda Everett, Head of Business. “Debbie Cavit is a well-known New Zealand interior designer who owns two stores in New Zealand. She also co-founded stores in Sydney and Melbourne. Kath Watson (formerly Hickey) is the New Zealand CEO of Optimum Media Direction, an International media and communication company. Kath is no stranger to managing award winning businesses. Peter Mayow is the Operations Manager at Fletcher Construction and has worked with Onehunga High School to support the Construction School. Peter sits on the Enterprise Trust Board that oversees the Business School and Construction School. But no dinner would be complete without a guest speaker. OHS is honoured to welcome Sir Ken Stevens, Chair of Export New Zealand, into that role. They expect to see a raft of individuals from corporate and tertiary disciplines and of course as many former students as possible. Transport, transport and more transport Auckland Transport looks to be going full steam ahead with the City Rail Link project heralded by the Mayor as the answer to Auckland’s transport problems.

They are also looking at work on a ‘corridor’ of traffic problems between the current AMETI (Auckland Manukau Eastern Transport Initiative) and SWAMMCP ( South Western Airport Multi Modal Corridor Project) areas already identified. What do they have in common? At a Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board presentation AT’s Carol Greensmith told Board members that the $2.4b City Rail Link aimed to get 65% of road trips into Auckland city done by rail. Completion is planned for 2021. At the Town Hall in May, Len Brown told media that this would free up roads for freight, and this is the self-same issue at the heart of AT’s new Onehunga/ Penrose focused study

Charges laid Queen’s Birthday weekend, a time many families see as a fun time to get out of the city, will probably never seem the same again to some Onehunga locals living in the area of Mt Smart and Athens Roads.

For them, and those directly involved in Watercare’s Hunua 4 project on June 4 last year, the public holiday will have been a reminder of the early morning gas explosion in the 1.9 metre wide, underground pipe. It was being fitted to improve Auckland’s reticulated water system. Tragically, Watercare maintenance planner and mother of two Philomen Gulland was killed and coworker, engineer Ian Winson, lost part of both his legs. In April 2012 The Department of Labour laid 3 charges against Watercare Services Ltd, under the Health and Safety in Employment Act, including failing to ensure the safety of workers. Canadian Pacific Limited faces two charges. Both parties pleaded not guilty in Auckland District Court on April 30 this year. The case was adjourned until August 2012.

entitled MMEWS: Multi Modal East West Study. Board member Josephine Bartley suggested that the name of the City Rail Link project, now sporting a bright logo, might mislead the non-city dwelling /working public into thinking a central rail loop bears no relevance to them. Would there be provision to give the project a more inclusive title? Auckland Transport said no. Definitely relevant to Onehunga business, the MMEWS project will tackle traffic on Neilson Street. Maungakiekie-Tamaki Transport Committee Chair Simon Randall says that previous solutions were too narrow and the Board pushed to address the whole problem, not just the Onehunga symptom. Leading the MMEWS team are Theunis Van Shaikwyk and Ian Blundell. They agree the area that contains high concentrations of employment and business land warrants a wide view. It actually incorporates Sylvia Park as well as Onehunga Town Centre and might even incorporate taking rail to the Onehunga Port for coastal freight shipping. “Now that we have established the project we need to actually define the problems and engage all Local Boards and the other stakeholders concerned” says Mr Blundell. Their first meeting is scheduled for July 2012.

Cold, flu & allergy season At this time of year we are bombarded with colds, flu, and allergies – the latter are often overlooked by people who have just learned to live with them. But you don’t have to. Our team of Naturopaths and Medical Herbalists take a holistic approach to treating allergies. We offer a hair-allergy testing service which involves taking a small sample of hair and sending it away to a testing lab. Results take 1-2 weeks and we find them to be incredibly accurate. This testing also checks for environmental allergens such as pollen and grasses. In general, to reduce the chances of illness it’s always important to look at your health holistically and we have several tried and tested suggestions. You could start with Apple cider vinegar,

The tunnel will go directly beneath his house. Staff said no one would be aware of the work going on below ground, unless they were at a secondary construction site along the route. Watercare held five other open days during May, in Mt Roskill, Mt Albert and Sandringham.

Locals of ‘The Bridge’ say their deepest concern about the Central Interceptor’s proposed air vent is the smell. At a May open day at St James Church many residents had accepted that with a sewage treatment plant on their doorstep, the proposed 13 kilometres of pipeline carrying wastewater and sewage needed to conclude there for treatment. But the prospect of a local, gassy emergency air vent was too much.

“We’ve put up with the smelly ponds for 40 years, we’ve put up with mosquitoes and flies. In the last 5 years these things have got a lot better and we do realise Watercare has made efforts to do that. Overall everyone has worked hard to improve the area - even house prices have gone up. But suddenly we are faced with a vent that releases air when the pipeline fills with storm water and we are very worried it’s going to smell and really set us all back” says long time resident Denise Wong. Ian Campbell agrees that just as the seafront is becoming really attractive to Aucklanders “the whole area is going to have to go back a step or two. This is a real blow to everyone because in recent years we’ve come so far. “ But after engaging with the Mangere Bridge Ratepayers Association in April, Watercare claim they have found a better place for the vent; in the toilet block, which they will re-design and build, at Ambury Park. They also say it will only ‘burp’ once every 2 to 3 years. After speaking with design engineer Clinton Cartell, several residents liked the suggestions that the vent could be fitted with

Superb menu and a sophisticated setting: The Landing launches a new look “The Landing Restaurant & Bar is a stunningly successful combination of a modern look which comfortably incorporates historic features”.

What a way to spend an evening The transformation of the historic public house known as The Landing is complete. Owner Mark Alsen is delighted with the new look of the bar area; a stunningly successful combination of a modern look which comfortably incorporates historic features. Cosy open fires invite you into the warmth, to settle on the sofa with a friend and a drink. The modern textured bar front is an art work in its own right – adding a flash of light to the room and complementing the simplicity of the wooden floors and furniture, and the stark images of old Onehunga on the walls. Three new plasma tv’s make this a great venue to catch up with your sporting mates - The Landing holds a happy hour during each Warriors game so whether you are celebrating or commiserating you will be doing it in style.

Sundays have always been special at The Landing. For years the Clevedon oyster special has been a hit with patrons so it is with great delight that they are able to announce that the Clevedon Oysters are

back on the menu for the amazing price of $13.50. The month of June will also see the introduction of the traditional Kiwi roast to The Landing’s menu. A choice of roast meats with vegetables and traditional trimmings, served with a smile and with no dishes to take care of afterwards – what better way to enjoy a Sunday lunch? There are so many ways to enjoy The Landing – a boutique sports bar, a great restaurant, a venue for a special birthday or celebration, a place for a quiet drink or to while away a long afternoon with friends. It is one of Onehunga’s special places; come and see for yourself.

Dinner for 6...and the winner is... The prospect of winning $500 towards a dinner for 6 at the Landing drew 193 entries into their recent draw. Laura Gladstone of Hillsborough is the lucky winner, and will be dining in style with five of her friends. All competition entrants will receive a free glass of wine for everyone at their table when they dine at The Landing, so make a booking soon and come along to enjoy the fine food and unique atmosphere available at Onehunga’s premier restaurant.

The new direction for New Zealand Police

'Prevention first' is the 2011-2015 operating strategy for New Zealand Police, launched by Police Commissioner Peter Marshall in late 2011, that places prevention at the forefront of our organisation. This new strategy is aimed at reducing crime and crashes, gaining control of the criminal environment and making New Zealand a safer place to live. Prevention first will mean a raft of changes to the way Police work with victims so they receive better service and are less likely to become victims again. It will involve changes in the way Police deploy staff and are better placed to respond to what's happening in our communities before it is too late. Police have always had a role to play in preventing crime and crashes, but 'Prevention First' makes this our number one priority. What does this mean for our Onehunga community? From the 1st of July I will be working with a team of Community Constables who will be focused on crime and crash prevention in and around our community; we will be better equipped to deal and respond with community issues resulting in a reduction for crime overall. You may have already noticed a marked increase in the number of Police on the streets in Onehunga and I can say that this has already had a reduction in the number of offences being committed in our area. Community involvement will also be crucial to identify issues in our area. Neighbourhood Support Groups and Community Patrols are two great examples of how the community can help support the Police in their goal in overall crime reduction. My goal for Onehunga is to have a Community Patrol group running in our area by December 2012. This Community Patrol will be made up of volunteers from within our community and will work closely with Police. A community meeting will be held soon to discuss a strategy for starting a community Patrol in Onehunga. At this time I have yet to set a date for this meeting, however If any person is interested in being a community patrol member you can contact me on either (09) 622 8722 or donald.allan@police.govt.nz. Businesses rates cut a break The final Long Term Plan for Auckland seems like it’s been a long time coming; 10,000 submissions covering 50, 000 different points is a lot to get through. But after postsubmission amendments in mid May, and a robust Strategy and Finance discussion, the hammer went down on the forthcoming shape of Auckland for the next 10 years.

Maungakiekie supports older purchase age June will see the final reading of the Alcohol Reform Bill in Parliament and Maungakiekie MP, Peseta Sam LotuIiga says he will be voting for a purchase age of 20yrs.

This follows last year’s supplementary order paper by Hamilton West MP, Tim Macindoe, to allow the option of 20 to be voted on. This particular issue will be voted on as a conscience vote, during committee stage of the Bill. “After much deliberation and consultation, I support my colleague’s amendment and will vote to increase the purchase age to 20”, says Mr Lotu-Iiga. “Despite compelling arguments from the Northern Young Nats and Keep it 18, my electorate of Maungakiekie overwhelmingly supports an increase of the purchase age to 20. In an electorate wide survey, 80% of Maungakiekie voters wanted to increase the age to 20. Only 15% wanted to keep it 18 and 5% were unsure. “I accept that many people believe if you’re old enough to be elected to Parliament, get married or join the army, then you’re old enough to drink. But we must also accept that we have a problem with alcohol and my electorate is quite clear on how they want me to vote. “I spent a night on the beat with Police in Maungakiekie and saw first-hand how youth drinking and alcohol abuse is affecting our youth as well as communities like Oranga and Panmure. “I wish to thank the Northern Young Nats, Keep it 18, Glen Innes Drugs and Alcohol Group and Community Action Youth and Drugs for engaging with me throughout this process. This is not an issue or a vote I have taken lightly.”

You can trust St John

Among the accepted amendments were those of business rates. Historically, businesses have been charged a rate that is based on a standard land rate then multiplied by a ‘differential ‘of 2.63. Many businesses submitted that it was a hefty price to pay in stretched financial times and asked to have the differential slashed to zero, but Council declined and opted for a middle ground. What this looks like for Maungakiekie businesses is a collective 1.76% increase on previous rates. Things will get easier though , when that ‘differential’ drops each year at the rate of 0.1, resting at 1.7 in nine years. Comparatively, residential rates were tipped to rise by a collective 11.7% but Council and government approved an immediate 10% cap, allowing the balance to be paid over several years. Both sectors will pay 3.6% inflation for 2012/2013, and 4.9% for the two years following. Rate-payers are reminded by Council that the method of basing rates on the capital value of a property, irrespective of suburb, is a central government directive, not a local one. Council says they ‘recognise the ongoing need to support and stimulate the Auckland economy’ so the move to alleviate pressure on business and industry is not restricted to rates alone. The Mayor says this is the reason behind the move to get cars off the road and people onto public transport so as to free up roads for freight, thereby improving business logistics.

Nolene Leech has just recently moved into her new two bedroom apartment at Selwyn Heights Village. SCENE in Onehunga Onehunga’s senior citizens have been having a great time lately, taking every opportunity offered by SCENE to get out and about. So much so in fact that coordinator Shirley Ruttley comments that she ends up with a waiting list for most outings.

A trip to the Puhoi Cheese factory, followed by lunch at the Warkworth RSA was very popular. However, events for the next two months are closer to home. On July 3rd a trip to Ryders Theatre will be followed by a roast lunch, at a total cost of $30. In August, Jane Messer, an educator for the Arthritis Society, will come along to 3 Pearce Street to give a talk. The $3 door charge will include afternoon tea and there will be time to socialise as well. Those keen on an outing should put 4th September in their diaries now – a trip to the Zealong Tea Plantation and Camellia Tea House is planned and bookings are already being taken. Get in early to avoid disappointment – booking forms are available at the Onehunga Community Centre or on Fridays at SCENE’s activities club. These Friday gatherings are increasingly popular, with 25-30 people turning up regularly to play indoor bowls, 500 or Scrabble. Come along and join in from 1pm to 2.30 – meet some new people and catch up with old friends in a welcoming atmosphere. A gold coin donation is appreciated. Refreshing local approach to renovation You can tell by walking into Kris and Barbara MacGregor’s house in Onehunga that they love renovations – they are in the middle of major works to their own bungalow.

They turned a quaint 2 bedroom place on a good section into a four bedroom property with an open plan living and kitchen space. They have added a special touch too; the new rooms retain the historic markings of early 1900’s origins. High studs and ceiling panels, deep architraves and period style windows work beautifully with modern bi-fold doors and an expansive deck.

The home is one example of what they are capable of doing for others under the Refresh Renovations brand. In fact they have been doing their job so well it won them four Refresh awards last year, including the overall Franchise of the Year. Kris has always been in the building trade and says he’s pretty much hung up his tool belt to fully embrace the role of project manager, but the experience is invaluable. Barbara has a background in corporate marketing and adds a professional touch to the paperwork. “I realized that by becoming a Refresh franchisee we had infinitely better resources at our fingertips – from access to building materials and contractors to systems and packages for the office” says Kris. The MacGregors offer a full design and build service so the time clients have to take out of work or leisure is minimal. After the design is established Kris coordinates the movements of all the tradesmen and consults clients as needed. “We have found that when people take on a renovation themselves to save money they often end up spending more in the long run and don’t necessarily get the result they wanted. It also becomes stressful” adds Barbara. Refresh Renovations was founded by a leading marketing company in 2010 and say one in three DIY renovations end up in a dispute, a result that Kris and Barbara want homeowners to avoid. “People might love their home but realize the kids need more space, or they need a home office, another bathroom. Barbara and I see ourselves as Watch & Clock Repairs giving those people the space Onehunga Jewellers they need with guaranteed 214 The Mall results.” Ph 636 4760 For more information call 633- 0965 or visit www. refresh.co.nz

Sunset over Kiwiana Dom Morrison is pretty nervous about his first exhibition. The Pukekohe born, One Tree Hill based, artist has been painting and drawing all his life and even illustrated children’s book projects for family but he has never formally hung his work up for all to see. Dom’s paintings and drawings will hang at Te Karanga Gallery, 208 Karangahape Road from 26th June to 5th July. The gallery is a well known bohemian venue for novice exhibitors and it shares the upstairs open space with a delightful tea shop and funky radio station. Later in July his work will feature in a group exhibition at Howick’s Uxbridge Gallery. Dom's work reflects a love of New Zealand mixed with his relationship with the Pacific; his wife is Tongan and one of her favourite pieces captures her image against a Rarotongan backdrop. Dom and his wife have visited the Islands several times and the sunsets never fail to inspire him.

Exhibition & Sale of Contemporary Art Kohia Terrace School is proud to be hosting its 8th Exhibition & Sale of Contemporary Art. The exhibition and sale will feature work by about 90 New Zealand artists. Kohia Art Chairperson Julie Kippenberger says “Many of our artists are favourites from last year, but we have some new artists to keep the exhibition of sculpture, glass, fine art, photography and ceramics fresh and interesting. There’ll certainly be something to cater for all tastes.” Those already confirmed to exhibit include Jeff Thomson, Russell Jackson, Belinda Griffiths, Neal Palmer, Richard Killeen and Jane Gray.

“This exhibition is called ‘Sunset over Kiwiana’ as I like to use images of all things ‘Kiwi’ that tell a bit of a story about my life too. One of my favourites is of me looking out of a villa window at my wife in the garden” says Dom. He has been inspired by other artists known for their skill in blending architecture, landscape and realism, such as Sir Peter Siddell and Robin White. Pieces also depict cabbage trees, native birds and volcanic cones that he works into the paintings to fit an inspiring or nostalgic image in his mind. For more information visit www. kfmradio.co.nz or www.uxbridge.org.nz

The event is the major fundraiser for Kohia Terrace School, raising about $50,000 to supplement teaching staff and resources in the creative areas of arts and music. “It’s an excellent opportunity for first time art buyers or experienced collectors to find something special” says school Principal Alison Spence. The exhibition, being staged in the Kohia Terrace School Hall, 3 Kohia Terrace (off Gillies Ave), Epsom, on the weekend of June 8 to June 10, begins with a ticketed gala opening evening. Tickets cost $40 per person and can be purchased by emailing info@kohiaart.co.nz or from the school’s office phone 630-4525. The exhibition will remain open throughout the weekend, with free admission. Opening hours are 11am to 5pm on Saturday June 9 and 11am to 3pm on Sunday June 10 (Door donations welcomed).

Book fair success The Rotary Club of Onehunga/One Tree Hill held an extremely successful book fair on Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd of May.

Held in the assembly hall of Royal Oak Primary School the fair was already buzzing with activity at 8am, with the fine weather on the day attracting many passers by who wandered in to search for a bargain. The atmosphere was hectic and bustling with activity.

Ever thought of becoming a Rotarian? We meet every Monday for a meal and short meeting at 6.00-7.30pm in the Orpheus Restaurant, RSA building, Onehunga. To enquire about being part of this friendly, diverse group and coming one evening to check us out, please contact:-

Mavis 634-4519, Ray 636-6790

Volunteers and buyers alike were having a great time searching out special interest books and tracking down favourite authors. The large attendance during both days meant that volunteers ended the weekend tired, yet very satisfied at a job well done. This fund raising effort has netted great rewards for the local community, as it enables the Rotary club to continue with its charitable ventures.
