SINZ comes up trumps It’s a long way from Onehunga to New York but for Chris Mills, Project Manager at Superyacht Interiors New Zealand (SINZ) Ltd, the journey is one he hopes to repeat.
SINZ (formerly trading as Robinson Marine) have been based in Onehunga for the past 10 years, designing and building the interiors of super yachts for the rich and famous. Many of these beautiful boats have been built in New Zealand, but with the international nature of the clientele a number of projects have been carried out around the world working with overseas shipyards. SINZ have concentrated over the years on delivering quality and reliability, forging strong links with like minded companies as they build their international reputation. However, super yachts are an expensive proposition at an average of 55 metres of unequivocal luxury, and the down turn in international economies has had a worldwide adverse affect on the industry. It is at times like this that a hard won reputation for excellence can make a difference to economic viability, and SINZ have made the first steps into a whole new market place with a project won by impressing an
elite American interior designer. Having worked on a number of projects with Trinity Yachts, based in Mississippi and Louisiana, SINZ has built up a reputation with US interior design company Patrick Knowles Design. When a wealthy Middle Eastern family bought floors 59 and 60 of Trump Towers in New York they engaged construction company Bernsohn and Fetner to oversee the gutting and redevelopment of the apartment. Having completed the interior design of the client's new 64 metre Superyacht, Patrick Knowles Design were the obvious choice to create the dream interior which led to SINZ being invited to quote for supplying the fixed furniture and fittings. Chris was alerted to the

House Park players at work on Brett Clark's garden
Mates mucking in The House Park Cricket Club came to the rescue of one of their teammates in March when they gathered together to help clean up Brett Clark’s Waitangi Road section.
A Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board member and a teacher at Oranga Primary, Brett is a prominent Onehunga figure whose life took a decidedly unpleasant turn last August. Brett initially thought he had a “bit of a stiff neck” after a minor slip while out fishing. However the pain did not go away. In fact it got worse and before long he was almost crippled. The condition forced him to stop working and take leave from his local board duties. His physical state was a mystery to doctors and in November he deteriorated to the extent that he was admitted to hospital. Brett spent 25 days in Auckland City Hospital as a succession of doctors tried, but failed, to find out what was wrong. Eventually it was discovered that he had Osteomyelitis, a serious staphylococcus infection, in his neck bones. After leaving hospital he had to wear a neck brace for almost three months and as he could not drive, had to get round on a mobility scooter. “The brace was so uncomfortable that I’ve been sleeping in an armchair since Christmas. And now, although I’m out of the brace, my movements are still pretty restricted” says Brett. Brett’s incapacity also meant he was unable to do anything around the house and, with wife Jayne working fulltime, the garden quickly took on the appearance of “ a small jungle.” Fortunately for the Clarks The House Park Cricket Club, based at Waikaraka Park, rolled up their sleeves and stepped in. The lawns were mowed, paths weeded, and trees and bushes trimmed plus a wood chipper was located and put to good use. “After everything Brett has done for everyone over the years in Onehunga it was something we were happy to do” said Club Captain Marty Tomkins.

SINZ comes up trumps continued... possibility of being able to quote for this work just before Christmas, but the final invitation to quote was issued in mid January giving just 3 working days to price a quote for work worth well in excess of $1.5million. Frantic phone calls and late nights at the office were rewarded when the job was awarded to SINZ just 2 weeks later. Work at the Onehunga factory is well under way to create all the built in furniture for the apartment, including kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, doors, frames, cabinets for audio visual and entertainment equipment, mouldings – even a staff laundry! The mouldings need to have an astonishing 1.2 km of silver inlay, and other finishing touches include granite, onyx, marble and a water feature. Once completed, everything needs to be packed up and shipped to New York for installation to meet the November deadline,

and Chris says all their staff are committed to ensuring that the delivery will be made on time to the highest standard. “This is a huge opportunity for us because Bernsohn and Fetner only do Manhattan apartments. They have eight projects on the go at the moment, and there is a huge amount of refit work available”. The super yacht industry will pick up again, but in the meantime this Onehunga employer intends to stay afloat.
PLEASE HELP!
The present economic climate is taking its toll, and many local families are finding it hard to make ends meet. Thanks to the presence of our own local Foodbank however things are being made a little easier, but this can only happen through the generosity of the community, and organisers report that donations of non-perishable food are currently very low. Just think - if everyone who was able to contribute bought just one extra tin, packet or jar with the weekly shop, the Foodbank stores could be filled to overflowing! One very useful item in particular is tinned fish, such as mackerel, but baked beans, baby food, cereals - in fact anything non-perishable that a family would need - are welcomed. Donations can be dropped off at the Citizens Advice Bureau at 81 Church Street. Please take the time to do this - we never know when we ourselves might need a helping hand!

Sam's month in review This month has seen some fine autumn weather and so it was pleasing to attend the Royal Oak Primary International Food Festival and the Onehunga Primary HIPPY garage sale. The big topic though occupying our community is the continued development of the Onehunga Foreshore Restoration Project. The two current issues revolve around water quality of the Manukau Harbour and the Notice of Appeals to the Environment Court in relation to the decision of the Auckland Council to grant resource consents for re-development works. On the issue of the appeals to the Environment Court, the Appellants are Te Akitai Waiohua iwi and Transpower New Zealand Limited. I aim to meet with iwi leaders to discuss the substance of their appeal which revolves around kaitiakitanga and guardianship over the land. Transpower meanwhile have appealed on the basis of the conditions of consent being inadequate to avoid or mitigate the safety effects resulting from the proximity of recreational activities to the transmission lines and the supporting structures. I have called a meeting with the Minister of Energy and Resources, Hon. Phil Heatley, and officials from Transpower in order to explain the rationale for such an appeal and work collaboratively to focus on possible solutions to allow the project to go ahead without protracted legal wrangling. On the issue of water quality, I have met with both Auckland Council officials and Watercare Services management as well as working collaboratively with local community leaders from
TOES, the Local Board and the Onehunga Business Association. Auckland Council has expressed some unease at water quality in the area especially with the re-development promoting more use of the harbour area for swimming. I have received assurances from Watercare that they are committed to keeping waste water overflow frequency to less than 2 per annum while acknowledging stormwater overflows produce the greater risks to swimmers. As a community we need to hold Watercare accountable for these undertakings and ensure that the beach areas are safe, clean and amenable for use by our community and visitors to the area. In parliament I chaired 2 days of hearings on the Government’s welfare reforms. These reforms take an investment approach by providing important wrap-around services like mentors, parenting programs and budgeting services to assist young people to get into work and off long term welfare dependency. These reforms have strong public support and are expected to be implemented by the end of July. Around town, I opened the 4th Australasian Ponseti Club Foot conference at Auckland Hospital, gave the opening address to international competitors at the 2012 KVB Kunlun Junior and Cadet Open Table Tennis tournament, and officially opened Pacific Media Network’s new Buildings in Manukau. Finally, I represented the Government at the 24th New Zealand Infantry Battalion Association's Beating of the Retreat ceremony at the Auckland War Memorial Cenotaph. It was a special ceremony in remembrance of over 500 men of the Battalion who lost their lives in World War II. Their ultimate sacrifice means we are able to enjoy the freedoms and liberties we enjoy in New Zealand today. In the spirit of remembrance of ANZAC Day: lest we forget. Mangere Bridge comes alive in autumn Green fingers in the family There is no doubt that Your Personal Gardener is a trueblue family business. When the Onehunga Community News turned up for a chat at Jellicoe park we were greeted by mum Sue, and lads Darren and Graham Mahon, all ready to tackle anything from planting a $10,000 ‘wild exotic’ to pruning roses for a garden wedding.
Sunday the 15th of April saw Mangere Bridge village come alive with a well and truly sensational Autumn Festival. Over 4000 people visited to browse colourful stalls, eat French crepes or tuck into hotdogs and popcorn, Coronation Road was festooned with yellow bunting flags and the scene provided a true picture postcard start to autumn for businesses and residents alike.
Of course no festival is complete without music and Roger Skinner and the Motivation kept ample pairs of feet tapping and hands clapping at pavement cafe tables. For the more adventurous in the crowd, local Zumba instructors put on a street-class for all ages. It drew hundreds of smiles from the crowd. In Naomi and Bill Kirk Park, visitors were busy sampling Villa Maria wines with local salmon merchants and award winning Gruff Junction cheeses. There was also a rather curious stall set up by Cornwall Park’s ‘Urban Honey’ team. Bee Keeper DonTaylor decided to bring the honey combs and some of the hives along to educate shoppers on just how the honey tastes straight from the source. “It’s proven to be a huge success today, especially with the kids. We’ve almost sold out of all our stock and its only 12pm” he said with great pleasure. The Mangere Bridge Art Group, local SPCA and many other businesses all added to the vibrant atmosphere. Mangere Bridge Progressive Business Association manager Carol-Anne Armitage was pleased to see the township so lively and aimed to interview 100 visitors by the end of the day to hear their thoughts. For information on other markets and events throughout the year, contact Carol Anne on 636-7491.

While their jobs are many and varied, it has taken seven years to build up to this level. The Mangere Bridge family took an existing small business focusing on purely residential gardening and turned it into a multi-disciplined business that now even includes insurance re-instatement work. From long -term commercial contracts to one-off backyard spruce-ups the Mahon’s point out that each job requires its own approach; there is such a wide range of style options available for gardens these days. “Wild exotics have become very popular in recent years” says Darren. “So when people say this native tropical look is a favourite with them we go through the kind of land they have, plus what else they want to keep in the garden. We have to be practical about what works, including looking at budget. Some people like to maintain a new garden, some don’t. We factor that in and offer our maintenance services if needed.” Sue says that some even like to get out in the garden with them and learn a thing or two. “We like that – we’re there for the client and if we can pass on some valuable knowledge to help them we certainly will.” Graham adds that being clear about the purpose of the job is important too. Locals vent frustration at Watercare
with a hoped for design, procurement and planned construction start date of 2015-2017” says Mr Nama. For regularly updated information visit www.watercare.co.nz
In late April, word had it that Watercare’s mammoth Central Interceptor pipe would feature a 3m high air vent at the bottom of Andes Ave, on Kiwi Esplanade.
World champions
While up to six other Auckland locations along the 13km long Southernbound pipeline will have the same vent pipes, the Mangere Bridge Resident and Ratepayers Association isn’t happy. At an April meeting Watercare’s Major Project Manager Mike Sheffield answered questions about volume, route, treatment systems and costs, put to him by residents including chair Roger Baldwin. A following Herald article quoted Baldwin as saying it was “coming from Western Springs so pump stations en route do not flood out and run down to the Waitemata Harbour, which unfortunately doesn’t do us much good here on the Manukau.” The pipe will actually carry combined waste and stormwater flows from central Auckland to the Mangere plant, and eventually do away with the Hillsborough pumping station. Watercare’s Operations Manager Networks, Anin Nama, told The Onehunga Community News that improvements had to be made to the more frequent spills on the Waitemata to reach agreed targets with Auckland Council. The Central Interceptor will help meet those targets. Collectively there are about 130 combined sewer overflow points in central Auckland. Watercare has proposed a $2.4 spend over the next 10 years to remedy these and related issues, and the interceptor’s $650m purse is understood to be included in that figure. But despite the well intentioned targets there will no doubt be repercussions: Mangere Bridge Town Manager Carol-Anne Armitage feels the vent would adversely affect the 9000 residents in Mangere Bridge, and the same could be said of the construction’s impact on birdlife. She and others don’t want the vent in a residential area. But Watercare’s strategy is already well mapped out. “Consent is intended to be lodged in August 2012, approved in 2013,
As this issue was going to press, we were informed that the team from Onehunga High School had won the 2012 Vex Robotics Competition World Championship in Anaheim, California. Zac Sutcliffe, Mitchell Longair and Matthew Dunbar, accompanied by teacher Doug Bryan, took on 400 teams from 20 countries to win the title. The Robots, designed and built by the pupils, competed in matches where two machines from each team competed to pick up objects around a course and deliver them to their ‘goals.’ The team scoring the most ‘goals’ winning. Congratulations to all involved.

Swimming safer than you'd think If ever supporters of the Onehunga Foreshore restoration felt the project didn’t get enough media attention, they certainly couldn’t argue it hasn't been getting its fair share lately.
In late March, a water quality detail in the project’s consent report touched a chord with communities on the Manukau; canine, avian and human faecal matter and bacteria had been found in the water. Notaries such as MP Peseta Sam LotuLiga, MP Phil Goff, council officers and society chairs deservedly threw up their arms. How could Watercare be treating the Manukau with such apparent disdain? Iwi had already made their point in writing. Ngati Te Ata, Te Akitai and Ngati Tamaoho stressed that: ‘It is totally unacceptable to Iwi that Auckland Council is prepared to spend 28 million dollars to reclaim 6.8ha of the Onehunga foreshore as a ‘legacy and beautification’ project promised to local residents 30 years ago, while the existing Onehunga lagoon and foreshore water quality fails all guideline tests for human health, is polluted with faecal matter and stormwater pollutants”. All of the above begs the question: how does Onehunga’s water compare to that at other beaches? According to Watercare’s Operations Manager Anin Nama, the 14 stormwater overflow outlets and 1 sewage outlet spilling into the Manukau are nothing unusual in terms of any beach. “Every beach has overflow pipes- some with a mixture of storm and sewage overflow points” he said. “Although the commissioner's report stirred up the issue of not swimming near the sewage outlet 24-48 hours after a storm or heavy rain event, this rule applies to every beach in the region. Onehunga upholds one of the best standards. In fact to bring
every beach up to the standard set by council and held by Onehunga, Watercare plans to initially spend $2.4 b in the next 10 years.” The Onehunga foreshore reticulation system spills on average twice per year- modelled on the last 18 years. Other beaches might see 7 spills per year. The Onehunga trunk pipe is fitted with a volume monitoring system but overflows at, for instance, Takapuna beach, are not all fitted with such devices. Hence comparative volume: spill frequency figures cannot be attained, says Mr Nama. The standards they work to can be found on Auckland Council's site in Chapter 12 of the Physical and Social Infrastructure targets: ‘Reduce wet weather overflows to an average of no more than two events per discharge location per annum where the stormwater and wastewater systems are separated by 2040 with priority on bathing beaches and other sensitive receiving environments by 2030.’ So how do the contents of waste and stormwater pipes come to actually overflow in the first place? While the wastewater pipes are intended to hold mainly sewage, stormwater infiltrates these pipes and causes an overflow in three common ways: customers either innocently or purposefully connect storm water to wastewater pipes; their pipes are poorly fitted in the first place; sewage and wastewater in a given area is not yet separated. So is it only the diluted overflow of sewage that contaminates water? Anin stresses it is not. “It’s also the contaminants in stormwaterand these outlets are always overflowing. Water coming off the street, driveways, industrial activity can cause bacteria and indicate contamination such as Council found when testing several spots around the lagoon and foreshore. What is really needed here is a united front with Auckland Council on this subject. The safe swimming ‘Safeswim’ guide on the AC website says all beaches require a 48 hour no swim period after heavy rain. And quite frankly I wouldn’t take my family swimming to any beach within 48 hours of rainfall, regardless of location. “

Remembering a great man Swimmers at the Onehunga War Memorial Pools may notice a new addition to the pools this year: a new clock at the north end of the indoor pool. The clock is in memory of long-time pools manager Jack Mazzoleni who passed away last year.
With partners Hilton Brown and Dennis Kingsman, Jack ran the Onehunga pools for 20 years. A keen water polo player, New Zealand Backstroke Champ and competitor at the Masters Swimming World Cup, Jack swam every day of his life. Friend Paddy O’Driscoll says the pools were Jack’s real home; particularly lane two of the indoor pool where he was a virtual fixture. Even after retiring and suffering with arthritis, Jack would still turn up at the pools and help teach people to swim. He was also famous for starting every work day by going around the whole building and making sure he said “Good Morning” to all the staff. The clock, which was donated by the war memorial pool’s current manager, CLM, was blessed by the Reverend Ann Moody. MP for Maungakiekie, Peseta Sam Lotu-Iiga, read a poem by James K Baxter. Jack’s daughters, Anita and Leanne, also spoke about their father before assisting their mother Jean unveil the clock which bears Jack’s name.

Local history in good hands Historic areas of New Zealand such as Onehunga are appreciated and admired by people who work, live in or visit them.
The old homes and business premises which grace our streets, the churches and parks full of reminders of days long gone all add to our sense of place and our feeling of belonging. To truly understand the world that the people who created these reminders of the past lived in, we need links that we can access to learn of their lives. In Onehunga we are blessed to have people like Audrey Ritchie, who is tireless in her pursuit of information and has spent years learning and improving her methods of collating, presenting and preserving Onehunga’s heritage. Born in 1941 in London, Audrey survived an early brush with history when the rubble from a bomb fell all around the pram in which she was sleeping – leaving her unscathed. In 1960 she arrived in New Zealand with her parents in search of a new life. In what she describes as a twist of fate, she met future husband Wally at a Youth Club dance in Te Awamutu, an event they had both attended reluctantly at the request of friends. Married in 1965, their two children arrived less than 12 months apart and life was busy, tiring and rewarding. After a short stint in South Africa the family moved to Onehunga in 1973, and “never looked back. We
Believe your eyes
like it here, it is home.” As the children became involved in school, Audrey increasingly became involved with the Onehunga Primary School – then still partly housed in the Onehunga Community House. The discovery of old records and photos in storage led to Audrey’s first foray into the preservation and display of history. The Headmaster agreed to Audrey preparing a display to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the school. She contacted local identity Flo Leng who had done a school record up to 1940 and asked if she could take over and continue the work. As word got out about Audrey’s project people started to offer her memorabilia, which eventually took over her garden shed. Finally, when the Community House was partially restored, a museum room was set aside and Audrey had her reward a room of her own to display the treasures she had amassed. The demands of documenting Onehunga’s history never cease though. Audrey has attended various courses to enable her to learn more about cataloguing – a time consuming and meticulous job. Audrey also belongs to the Historical Society, where she is on the committee and is spending a lot of time reorganising their library. A fascination for the lives that people lived, and her desire to ensure that future generations understand what those lives were like, keeps Audrey very busy in her retirement. She is supported in her efforts by Wally, and appreciated by those who share her work. Everyone who loves Onehunga’s history owes a debt of gratitude to her tireless work, and we at the Onehunga Community News salute her.

Inspired by seasons
by Alexandra Ventura, AUT journalism student
Modelling with clay and playing with finger-puppets play a role for children’s grief and loss programme Seasons™, thanks to its new Onehunga coordinator.
Jillian Alexander, who started at Seasons™ alongside former coordinator Claire Seel in March last year, stepped up to fill the role when Claire left in December. Seasons™ helps children who have had a significant loss in their lives, perhaps through a death of a family member or the separation or divorce of their parents. The confidential programme run both in schools, and at St Peter’s Church after school, lets children express their grief. Jillian has a background as a teacher and counsellor and believes this helps her bring another element to the programme. “I’m quite creative; I have a background in listening. It’s important to work closely with our trained volunteer Companions who lead the programmes. The programme progresses through each season of the year, dealing with different aspects of loss and change. Jillian’s contribution this year comes in the form of mascots to represent each season; summer is a teddy bear with a flotation ring – a fun way for the children to relate to each session and see where it’s going. “It gives a cohesive feel to the programme, they can see the link
and the development from week to week,” she says. The programme’s aim – and Jillian’s – is to give children an outlet for their grief so it is resolved at an early age. “It’s diffusing the power Coordinator Jillian Alexander of grief…the children leave with a new freedom. That black cloud is not hanging over them anymore.” Seasons™ is run in communities all around New Zealand, and is overseen by the Anglican Church but Jillian says it is not a religious programme; it’s more a way for the church to give back to the community. Previously manager of the telephone help line Kidsline, Jillian now directs 18 volunteers who work with the children. “I’m passionate about the programme. It’s so effective. We’re the fence at the top of the cliff, instead of the ambulance at the bottom.” The charity survives on grants, fundraising and the support of the community. Grove Hardware donated some trees to be planted in schools where Seasons™ programmes have been run recently, so the children can see them grow. Greetings from the Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board! It has now been 18 months since the formation of the Supercity and your Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board; we are halfway through our first term with next term’s election in October 2013. We have achieved much in this time and it feels like much longer than a year and a half, and yet it seems just like yesterday we were being sworn in at our inaugural meeting on 2 November 2010! Local Board Agreement and Auckland Council’s Long Term (ten-year) Plan We hosted four public sessions on these documents and many of you took the time to give us your thoughts and ideas at these meetings and in formal written and verbal submissions during March and April. We have found these contributions invaluable as they were of very high quality; this strong input by Onehunga’s communities means these documents will reflect what the people of our area want for their neighbourhoods. We will be formally negotiating with, and advocating to, the governing body in mid-May and amended documents based on these discussions will be finalised by the end of June in time for the start of the next financial year on 1 July 2012.
Applications now open for community funding Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board is encouraging community groups and organisations based in the area to submit their applications for the current quarterly round of discretionary community grants funding. This funding aims to assist groups to provide projects, programmes and events that make a positive contribution within our local board area. The board recognises the vital role community groups and organisations play in developing diverse, strong and sustainable communities and encourages efforts that support priorities in its local board plan, including environmental, arts, cultural, community development, recreation and heritage initiatives and supporting young people and Maori. The board has limited funding available and applications for this round close at 4pm on Wednesday, 23 May. Closing dates for the remaining quarterly rounds in 2012 are 15 August and 21 November. Local Board Discretionary Community Grants – reminder One of our legacy funds was for community grants which we topped up to make a total annual pool of $80,000 that we distribute quarterly. Applications to our next round close at 4pm on Wednesday 23 May. Check out the advertisement below for details of these.
Arthur St safety works Partially due to the tragic loss of life last year, but also due to ongoing high speed issues, Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board engaged Auckland Transport to do safety works in Arthur Street and these were concluded recently. Post-implementation monitoring will be carried out to ensure the works deliver what is required here. Next Maungakiekie-Tamaki Local Board meetings in Onehunga are: Tuesday 26 June, 6pm; Tuesday 31 July, 6pm; Tuesday 7 August, 2pm. All of these meetings are at Onehunga Community House, 83 Selwyn Street. Members of the public are welcome to attend any of these meetings and all agendas will be online at www. with Maire and Christine This year has whizzed along so quickly that we were stunned when we realised it’s already time to celebrate all those precious mums out there! So write this down: MOTHERS DAY 13TH MAY!
It’s a special time to honour your mum and all those who have ‘mothered’ you in your life. It is time to recognise the influence of mothers on our society. After all, what would we do without them? In the Northern Hemisphere Mother’s Day coincides with the beginning of Spring, but here in the Southern Hemisphere it is all about keeping warm and cosy, snuggling up with breakfast in bed, and even offering something special and sparkly to make mum’s day. And let’s be honest, after years of school lunches, snotty noses, midnight pickups, driving lessons and countless roast dinners, your mum deserves a bit of pampering! Now is the perfect time to indulge your mother with her favourite thing - JEWELLERY! We have something for every budget and every mum. Chamilia Beads are a lovely way to mark the occasion, and with prices as low as $44.00 for heart or hug beads, she’s sure to melt. Maybe the gift of time is what’s required, and we are worldfamous-in-Onehunga for a massive collection of watches! A favourite of ours is the Astina watch, set with a genuine diamond on the dial for just $99.50. We think mums are worth their weight in gold (just don’t ask them their weight!) and we’d love to help you pick the perfect present for her.
As a thank you to all our loyal ‘Bling’ readers - pop in and tell us you love reading this column and when you buy your Mother’s Day gift from us, we’ll GIVE you a bit of Bling. But only while stocks last.

In good hands Adam Thompson isn’t your average locksmith. In fact to say that he’s experienced in security is an understatement; this British Mangere Bridge resident might enjoy fixing locks for a living now, but he spent 9 years in the UK as a Royal Marine Commando. The job took him to places like Ireland, Afghanistan, Iraq, Kuwait, Lebanon, Yemen and other Middle Eastern countries. Now he lives just ‘across the bridge.’ He decided to train as a locksmith some time after leaving the military; he had already gained civilian based experience in security and surveillance and saw it as a logical progression. He brought all that to New Zealand four years ago because of fond memories of Auckland as a visiting child. Most of his family came back here with him too. He says being a locksmith is the perfect complement to his other job; Onehunga fire-fighter. “Fire fighting is shift based you see. This means I have the time to commit to another small business. I lived in Warkworth before moving to Mangere Bridge and I got the ball rolling up there with Phoenix Lox, but I was pleased to come down here and tackle a
bigger market” says Adam. “It all works really well together.” He can undertake anything from a free security assessment to an emergency lock repair. The Onehunga Community News did wonder if it was fair on the rest of us to publish any more of Mr Thompson’s capabilities, but for the record he’s also a qualified motor mechanic and a commercial ferry driver. At least if you do have any security issues, you’re sure to be in capable hands!
Foreshore 'bulletin' No matter how tightly the Onehunga community had its fingers crossed for the Environment Court’s 15 day consent appeal period to glide by smoothly, it didn’t have any effect; two ‘appellants’ challenged the foreshore consent decision for different reasons.
Transpower made a detailed appeal, including citing the proximity of pylons to the proposed seaside playground, suggesting the design didn’t take the possible safety effects of the same into account. Te Akitai Waiohua iwi have built their appeal around ‘kaitiakitanga’ and guardianship over the land. Forthcoming weeks will see meetings and negotiations between the above parties and local leaders such as Peseta Sam Lotu-Liga and Jim Jackson, in an attempt to resolve issues at the heart of the appeals. What worries those who have worked tirelessly in pushing the foreshore restoration forward is that unlike the stricture of the submission and appeal periods, there is no such timeline for the period of resolution. Visit www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz for regularly updated information.

Answer the two questions bottom right of this page and you will go in the draw to win Dinner for 6 to the value of $500!
A secret no longer It’s always a challenge to marry a refurbished interior to the outer grandeur of a well-loved landmark building but at 2 Onehunga Harbour Road Mark and Stephanie have transformed The Landing in a way that captures the historic essence of the seaside building, and blends it with a modern, earthy minimalism. From the beautifully painted frontage to the stone framed restaurant courtyard at the rear, the investment is set to be a hit. Mark says The Landing is already referred to as one of Onehunga’s best kept secrets. But if the success of the late May launch is anything to go by it won’t be a secret too much longer. That’s fine by him - he’s waited 10 years while he leased the building and another one as owner, to present his dream property to the community. “It’s amazing that people still walk in here- surprised by the venue, the food, and generally everything on offer. They’ll say they have been driving past for years and regret they didn’t know we were right on their doorstep” explains Mark. The refurbishment of the bar has been a project in itself and when complete will warrant its own story. However Mark can promise that the renovated bar will be available on a Saturday night for private hire. An upstairs conference area is available for a variety of functions. No venue fee is charged for large functions and The Landing can cater for up to 80 people. While the building itself has changed, Mark has made sure the most popular meal specials are just the same. He’s retained an all day menu and added a Banquet Menu so 10 people or more can eat for $65 per head. The full menu is available online at www.thelanding.co.nz However for Onehunga Community News readers Mark has offered something extra special. Answer these questions to go in the draw to enjoy dinner for 6 to the value of $500.

Working for positive change People are clearly donating to and buying from the busy Changes Store on the corner of Church Street and Onehunga Mall; the shelves are full and the staff are certainly busy. Manager Elizabeth Bedford (pictured) says it’s also a delightful spot to work and shop in. But not everyone will know the charity they actually support, or that volunteer groups like Tableside Trust are also involved in its development. The opening of the second-hand boutique was enabled by Te Waipuna Puawai (TWP): ‘a thriving community development LAQCs | Rental Properties | Businesses

initiative’ of the Sisters of Mercy New Zealand. This association works to a long held value of ‘being present where the greatest need is.’ They state that around half of their clients are Maori, a third are Pasifika peoples, and the remainder are ‘kiwis’, refugees and new migrants. To this end they have focused the proceeds from Changes to areas such as Glen Innes, Pt England, Panmure and surrounding communities. These clients are part of an adult education programme based in Ellerslie. While TWP has many client groups, much of the revenue from Changes goes to the teenage mums whose lives they aspire to change through support and education. It is in this area that Tableside Trust yet again become involved in hands-on positive change. Onehunga locals will know the Trust as leaders of last year’s RWC community clean-up and other reported projects. “We pick up the girls and their children from their homes and take them to the Ellerslie training facility. Then we take part in the childcare that’s offered to them as part of the TWP scheme” says Trust co-founder Denise Krum. “For this work we can only accept female volunteers.” She also arranges for seconds goods from two major clothing retailers to go through the Changes boutique, as well as arranging food parcels for families, and more. “It all has a very organic quality but these things always come together because of good nature and kindness. “In doing this we always have our eye on the purpose and that is: that no-one should have to think that a troubled life right now is as good as it gets. And that is that no one should have to think that a troubled life right now is as good as it gets. There is always hope and the potential for everyone to progress. This is what I see as at the heart of our work with TWP and Changes.” Both Changes and Tableside Trust are run on a volunteer basis. For more information on either organisation please visit www.twp.org.nz or www.tableside.co.nz, or visit the Changes store.

The power of prevention As nights get colder and the temperature decreases our immune response changes; the whole family is prone to colds and flues. Fortunately there are many herbs that are helpful in strengthening the immune system. One of the most outstanding herbs is Echinacea. Echinacea detoxifies and supports the immune system, in turn stimulating immunity, multiplying, activating and working with your body to stimulate white blood cells. However, this doesn’t happen overnight. It is best you start on Echinacea before you get sick. The Natural Health Company has many different products of this kind to support the whole family. For the little ones we recommend that you start on one of our most popular products for kids - Kiwi Herb Children’s Echinature. In a base of organic apple juice your kids will enjoy the taste and it will ensure they stay well and happy through the colder months. It’s known to be a

The real estate market is really moving in Auckland says Keith Niederer, General Manager, LJ Hooker Group, New Zealand.
2
CONVENIENTLY SITUATED LOCAL OFFICES
He attributes this to the increase in population, the increase in immigration and the demand for good solid properties from people planning to move from various locations around the country for business, schooling and lifestyle opportunities, there have also been an increasing trend in Auckland where families have grown and left the nest giving opportunity to lifestyle options in other NZ cities or provincial towns.

Niederer is busy establishing a support/buddy system that will help agents to achieve a greater work/life balance by not having to work mega hours. Too many people procrastinate says Niederer, they leave their run too late to graduate from the corporate world into an industry where they can work longer. We are assisting people who want to make career life and life transitions by providing a fast track learning facility and a flying start package. Help is at hand says Niederer, who, after 40 years experience in the real estate industry is also helping to mentor Franchise Owners and Agents. Less than 1/3rd of the population is brave enough to accept the challenge and responsibility of helping others to move ahead says Niederer, but there’s room at the top for more successful people who want to enjoy the fruits of hardwork. The nature of real estate has changed says Niederer & before too long, the average kiwi will no longer be able to own their ¼ acre site. Nor will there be the opportunity to live the dream life, to live in City apartments during the week and commute to their country homes or beachhouse at the weekend. His advice to agents and new entrants to the real estate industry, is to encourage their clients to get in now, to buy up large while the economy is recovering, while bank interest rates are low and while you can. No longer are the baby boomers saving up to prop up their children later in life says Niederer. Instead they are encouraging their children to be self sufficient and to enjoy the benefits of making wise and right investments early in their lives.

Mother’s Day fun for kids
Doggie day care
Kids can pop along to the Onehunga Community Centre on Saturday 12th May between 11am and 2pm to ‘Cupcakes & Crafts,’ to create a wonderfully creative special gift for their mum. The Onehunga Business Association and Onehunga Community Centre are joining forces this Mother’s Day to put on this event and enable local children to make their mum feel like a princess on Mother’s Day.
Also keep an eye out for daily free Happy Mother’s Day balloon giveaways in Onehunga Mainstreet and Dress-Smart in the week leading up to Mother’s Day, between 11am-1pm and 3pm-5pm. One lucky Mum will also win a Chamilia bracelet and pendant, courtesy of Onehunga Jewellers!
"We are delighted that Complete Canine Care is about to open a day centre in Onehunga. Rhiannon has been walking our 16 month dynamo Amber and now we know that Amber will be well looked after and enjoy the company of other dogs during the day" says Deborah Chappell and Chris Bell.
Deb says “Rhiannon is just amazing. She is fully professional and dedicated to the dogs in her care. The timing is perfect for us and the location is ideal.” Chris agrees. “We have every confidence in Rhiannon and her company Complete Canine Care and have already booked Amber in to be one of the first dog clients at the new centre when it opens in Patrick Street on 14 May. We know that Amber will be excited too as she loves being with Rhiannon." Rhiannon says that people without dogs used to snigger about doggie day care. However the need for a quality facility for dogs during the day is increasing rapidly with changing demographics. Such centres have been in the USA for about 10 years or more and now NZ is following the same trend. For many individuals and couples who are delaying having their own children; having dogs caters for their nurturing needs. Just as good parents provide early child care for their children, responsible dog owners also want the best for their dogs during the day while they are at work. “Our centre at 4 Patrick St Onehunga is ideally located with easy access to the Southern, South Eastern and South Western motorways and very easy access for those working or living in the Onehunga region,” says Rhiannon. All enquiries can be directed to Rhiannon Taylor 021 113 4695 or see more information on the website www.completecaninecare.co.nz

Orpheus anniversary
Well placed for parents
The 7th of February 2013 will mark the 150th anniversary of the disaster of the Orpheus at the entrance of the Manukau Harbour.
You may have visited The Parenting Place centre in Greenlane for coffee with friends, or to attend a workshop. But did you know we are a lot more than that – we’re a nationwide organisation dedicated to helping families.
With the loss of 189 lives this is still New Zealand’s greatest maritime disaster. This disaster stunned the whole of Auckland, especially the small communities surrounding the harbour. A group of people from these communities have formed a small committee who are looking into suitable commemorations to take place next February. But right now they are looking for descendants of victims, survivors, rescuers or witnesses, with a view to inviting them to any commemoration services that may take place. Contact Bridget Graham on (09) 636-9900 or email B.M.Graham@xtra.co.nz if you are either a descendant or have valuable information to offer.
You can trust St John
Our organisation has certainly changed over the years. We started as Parents Inc., with a dream to inspire and encourage New Zealand families - nearly 20 years later we're reaching thousands of people each year. We passionately believe that family is everything. Whether it be through our Toolbox small group parenting courses, community wide events, events specifically for Maori or Pasifika families, workshops in Auckland, webinars, quarterly Parenting magazine, or through our programmes for young people, we are here for families in New Zealand wherever they are on their parenting journey. The good news is that this help is all available in one place - The Parenting Place. That's what we're called now. Whether you're new to parenting and adjusting to life with a baby in the house or are on the rollercoaster ride that is parenting teenagers, we've got something for you. The Parenting Place is your place. We've updated our website (www.theparentingplace.com) to make it easier for you to find what we have to offer. The first question we are going to ask is, “Where are you on your parenting journey?” Click through to the ages and stages your kids are at - Early Years, Middle Years, or Tweens and Teens - to find advice, events and resources (there’s a section for Marriage and Relationships too).
Only St John medical alarms connect directly to St John and are installed by uniformed St John staff.

New price! Few remaining McElroy apartments from $395,000 Nolene Leech in her new two bedroom retirement apartment at Selwyn Heights Village
Nolene Leech has just recently moved into her new two bedroom apartment at Selwyn Heights Village. Attracted by the great value of her new home (just $460k including oven, dishdrawer, fridge, heat pump, washing machine, dryer and an undercover lock-up garage), Nolene was also impressed by the cafe, spa, wellness centre and entertainment complex all on site. Moving out of her four bedroom home of 37 years was a big step for Nolene, but the rewards far outweigh the upheaval. Nolene’s new life is just about to begin. If you’re ready to upsize your lifestyle, call us on 0800 4 SELWYN (0800 473 5996) for a tour of Selwyn Heights Village, 42 Herd Rd, Hillsborough, or visit www.selwyncare.org.nz for details.

Farewell Leeda by Alexandra Ventura,
AUT journalism student
After 7 years of organising events, ‘Wriggle and Rhyming’ with children and co-ordinating with the community, customer service librarian Leeda Ferdis is moving on – and returning to where she started. Known for her fun interacting with customers at Onehunga Library, Leeda is heading back to Mt Roskill Library where she began her love of customer service and community participation. “It’s the interacting with customers. Every customer has a different query. The joy of answering the questions and knowing they are satisfied," she says. Leeda spent her years at Onehunga Community Library coordinating the community in a variety of events from Diwali to Chinese New Year and countless library readings alongside her role of training, management and mentoring of staff. Leeda says she is excited to start her new role but will miss her team in Onehunga. “The team are excellent and I’m going to miss the story times; the child stuff.” She adds that the Onehunga community has always been great to interact with, particularly the Onehunga Business Association. “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed the community ties; the way I would organise events here and it would filter into the community.” Onehunga Library manager Rachael Town-Treweek says Leeda’s
enthusiasm will be greatly missed. “I always enjoyed watching Leeda get dressed up and doing crazy things to entertain children and adults alike for special events like Chinese New Year and programs like Wriggle and Rhyme. It was great having Leeda here to rely on whenever I was away. She always kept everything running smoothly. We wish her all the best in her new role at Mt Roskill.” Leeda is currently studying part-time and will be the library assistant to the manager, which will be a whole new challenge. “It’s a totally new ball game…I’ll be out of my comfort zone. It’s exciting.” Leeda would like to say thanks to Amanda at Onehunga Business Association, Sheryn and the team at Onehunga Community News, Chinese New Settlers service – Lina Zheng, Shanti Niwae, the team at Onehunga Library for all their cooperation, and to the ladies and gents of the Onehunga Book Group for always attending.

Looking for answers
A bus of politicians is driving by a farm where a man lives alone. The bus driver, caught up in the beautiful scenery, loses control and crashes into the ditch. The man comes out and finding the politicians buries them.
A man went into a bookstore.
The next day, the police are at the farm questioning the man. "So you buried all the politicians?" asked the police officer. "Were they all dead?" To which the man replied, "Some said they weren't, but you know how politicians lie."
Glaciers A lady on her first visit to Yellowstone National Park had a lot of questions for her guide, “Look at all those big rocks. Wherever did they come from?” “The glaciers brought them down,” said the guide. “But where are the glaciers?” “The glaciers,” said the guide in a weary voice, “have gone back for more rocks.”
He asked the storekeeper, “Where can I find a book about how to have a happily married life?' The store keeper answered, “That’s in Fiction, 1st row." The man asked again, “What about books on how a couple should get along?" The answer came, “That’s in Sports, Kung Fu, 2nd row." The man asked, “What about financial management and how to purchase a house?" The storekeeper, “That will be in Sci Fi Fantasy, the 8th row." The man, “What about how to get a raise, how to get a promotion." The storekeeper, "That will be in Non-Fiction, crime studies, last row." The man, “Do you have a book on why a man should be the head of the family?" The storekeeper smiled and said, "Sorry, I don't sell fairytales here."
